Introducing a Fully Functional Star Trek Tricorder

Beaming in the Wand Company's latest Trek replica.

Designed to work just like the fantasy version imagineered in the 1960s, with more than a little help from some 21st century technology, a full-colour LCD displays information stored in the Tricorder along with dynamic data gathered by its sensors and audio recording function.

With a target retail price of $250 USD, Star Trek fans can now look forward to measuring the environment, scanning radio frequencies, recording audio, impressing their friends, and enjoying the fact that they’ll own perhaps the most sophisticated prop replica ever designed and manufactured. The Tricorder will be available in summer 2021 directly from The Wand Company Shop, the official Star Trek Shop, and other selected terrestrial retailers. If fans want to be the first to hear about product updates and pre-order availability, they should register their interest The Wand Company's online store .

First discussed in their April updates , The Wand Company is taking inspiration from Chang’s design, focusing on the central row of silver-colored components — extrapolating their intended function as removable ‘data discs,’ as one appears to be “inserted” into a slot next to the display screen in the above drawing.

The collection of circular discs, which were not specifically used on-screen in the television series, will use color-based identification functionality to trigger different features of The Wand Company’s tricorder replica — everything from activating the built-in, real-world sensors TWC’s tricorder will have in its housing to  Enterprise starship status updates, and more.

Here’s TWC’s commentary on this ‘data disc’ concept:

Our first task was to design an ejector mechanism that would work smoothly and reliably, and fit in the limited space the prop has to offer in this area. The eight-disc array is fairly tightly boxed in between the hood, the lower compartment cavity wall and the back of the tricorder. Disc insertion and ejection is further complicated by the fact that the disc diameter is larger than the apparent opening the discs must pass through to be taken in and out of their dock. An array of spring-loaded latching switches attached to thin, crescent-shaped, bendy ‘catcher’s mitts’, which flex to hold and eject the discs, coupled with an upper “glamour bar” that rotates out of the way when a disc is ejected, provided the aesthetic functionality we were after. With all the discs inserted, and while being displayed in a cabinet, the glamour bar springs into position over the top of the array and the tricorder looks perfectly like a pristine version of the first season hero. But for those that want to boldly go beyond display and into the realm of realistic function, pressing any one of the discs ejects it with a satisfyingly premium click. The latching switch at the back of each disc slot tells the tricorder’s software which of the slots have discs in them.

star trek prodigy tricorder

With the ejector’s mechanical design well on the way to completion, we went to work on making the discs a plausibly functional part of the tricorder’s operation. Initially, we considered ways of ‘writing’ even just small amounts of data wirelessly to the discs (using an RFID chip embedded in the disc), but technical issues caused by the proximity of discs to each other, and the metal outer ring, closed down that idea. Given the capability of the tricorder’s internal electronics, and the onboard memory’s ability to cope with the functions we had planned for it, our thinking moved away from the complexity of adding hardware to each disc. To make the discs integral to the tricorder’s operation, for example, using them to activate the tricorder’s various functions, the tricorder has to be able to identify each disc.

star trek prodigy tricorder

To simplify the identification process and add another level to the interaction required by the user to operate the tricorder, we chose to only monitor the disc slot furthest to the right. Using this as the activation position ties nicely in with the possibility that, in the hero prop’s original incarnation, this particular disc was the removable one. The right-most slot also allows us to hide the disc identification sensor behind the moiré panel. To identify the discs, we chose colour sensing: it is human-readable, robust and reliable, and yet being non-obvious to the untrained user, appears suitably sci-fi. To add the necessary colour to the otherwise metal discs, in the absence of any hard evidence, once again Wah Chang’s sketch points the way. In it, what looks like a disc can be seen protruding from a socket next to the display. Although this particular feature never made it into the final design, the image shows what looks like a disc with a rim wrapped around a contrasting material. For the actual colours, The Original Series has a large and vibrant colour palette and there are plenty of richly coloured memory blocks and console switches which, between them, offer more than enough colours to provide an in-universe range of coloured disc inserts that an optical sensor can reliably differentiate between.

star trek prodigy tricorder

In use, inserting any of the discs into the right-most slot enables the user to access that particular disc’s set of related functions, information or files, and calls up any previously recorded data for those sensor functions. By using them in this way to control the tricorder, the discs become a properly engaging and integral part of the user interface, each one effectively acting as a specific data access key. The sensors, such as humidity, temperature and pressure, are interrelated so instead of assigning the function of a single sensor to each disc (and then leaving the other exciting tricorder functions buried in somewhere else in the user interface), we grouped the tricorder’s mix of dynamic and static information, capabilities and functions together more intuitively by usage.

star trek prodigy tricorder

While the specifics of each of the eight discs’ data contents and “in-use” functionality have not yet been fully defined beyond the above chart, it’s clear that TWC’s plans for this replica device are certainly high-level in concept.

The company is also taking significant advantage of fan feedback as they share updates with the public; the original color selection for these discs were much more “rainbow bright” versions of each color, until an Original Series fan suggested that TWC take direction from the classic  Trek sets’ more muted color palette.

star trek prodigy tricorder

You can read much more about this new ‘data disc’ concept at TWC’s Tricorder Blog entry on the topic, as well as another post from this month about how the company has worked to recreate the moire pattern seen on the classic Tricorder design, and implemented motorized action behind that part of the product’s build.

Originally planned for a summer 2021 launch, The Wand Company’s classic  Star Trek tricorder replica is now expected closer to 2022, or into next year entirely; with these kind of ongoing progress reports, though, we’re certain it’ll be worth the wait.

Bill Maher Applauds William Shatner For Controversial 'Star Trek' Interracial Kiss

Patrick stewart was asked to wear a wig at his 'star trek' audition — a wig that flew by itself from heathrow to lax, tom hardy "never said 'good morning'" or "good night" while filming 'star trek: nemesis,' says patrick stewart, stream it or skip it: ‘star trek: lower decks’ season 4 on paramount+, featuring the continuing (mis)adventures of starfleet’s proudest platoon members.

What’s the first thing you would do if you were handed a phaser? Probably start pew-pewing and blasting your friends, right? And that’s exactly what happens in Decider’s exclusive look at this week’s new episode of  Star Trek: Prodigy , titled “Dreamcatcher”.

In the new half hour, which starts streaming Thursday, November 11 on Paramount+, the crew of the  USS Protostar is being outfitted with your regular assortment of Starfleet toys before their first away mission. That includes a tricorder, a phaser, and a cool new vehicle; all of which are completely alien to the, uh, aliens of the crew.

Thankfully, they have Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) there to help coach them through the tricorder, which is used for “data analyzing and sensing,” the phaser (which is helpfully set to stun), and the new vehicle, which we’ll get to in a second.

But first, since these bunch of goofballs don’t know the first thing about Starfleet, Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas) has a little fun at everyone else’s expense, triggering a “gas sample” detection on the tricorder and then accidentally stunning himself with the phaser.

After that, though, it’s off to the hanger where Janeway reveals the piece de resistance: “The Runaway,” a vehicle with accelerated ion propulsion, tritanium chassis, holo-steering, and “hold onto your butts grab-handles.” And while the rest of the crew are headed off to explore a new planet, Janeway will hang back on the ship with alien weirdo creature Murf (Dee Bradley Baker).

Written by Lisa Schultz Boyd and Directed by Steve Ahn, Sung Shin, in the episode “the crew has their first away mission on an undiscovered planet that manifests their deepest desires, only to realize the planet has desires of its own.”

You can watch the rest of the clip above, and check out the full episode tomorrow on Paramount+.

Starfleet tricorder, 2233

Starfleet tricorder, 2233

In service aboard the early 2230s ship the USS Kelvin , the tricorder was a large flat device resembling a briefcase, complete with a handle for carrying the device. In the alternate reality , one was used to monitor the heavily pregnant Winona Kirk 's health during the Narada ' s attack. ( Star Trek )

Starfleet tricorder, 2256

Starfleet tricorder, 2256

The Type A tricorders were models older than the TS-120 Series (this included the model 120 and the 122). However, due to their sturdiness and dependability, many were in stock on the Enterprise, and were frequently used even when newer models were available.

"They never improved the design. Sure, they were made smaller, and more powerful, and less likely to explode." - Brad Boimler, Stardate 2291.6

Starfleet tricorder (2259)

Starfleet tricorder, 2259

By 2259 , Starfleet introduced a new variant of the tricorder. Lieutenants Spock and La'an Noonien-Singh carried one during the USS Enterprise 's mission to Kiley 279 . A similar model (the TS-120) was used during their mission to Krulmuth-B, to examine the Krulmuth-B portal (The favorite portal of Ensign Boimler, USS Cerritos, circa 2370.) ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ")

Starfleet tricorder, 2260s

Starfleet tricorder, 2268

In service during the mid- 2260s , the standard Starfleet tricorder incorporated a segmented design. This tricorder, a generally square-shaped device, utilized three sections: a pivoting upper portion containing the display readout and controls; a compartmented mid-section containing data chips ; and an adaptable lower portion, sometimes containing a hand-held sensor as with the medical tricorder . The tricorder of the 2260s was mostly black with silver trim and featured a leather-like strap, allowing one to sling the tricorder over the shoulder when not in use. ( TOS : " The Naked Time ")

Yeomen serving aboard Starfleet starships (such as Janice Rand aboard the USS Enterprise ) often carried tricorders in order to record and retrieve information for the starship captain . More often however, the tricorder was standard equipment included on away missions . ( TOS : " The Man Trap ", " Charlie X ")

These devices could also be set to transmit an automatic distress call . ( TOS : " That Which Survives ")

One of the Dax hosts owned this version of the tricorder, remembered fondly by Jadzia Dax . ( DS9 : " Trials and Tribble-ations ")

Forward view

A heavier version of the tricorder was also used by landing parties and aboard ship. This configuration sported a pistol-grip and its controls were located on the top of the unit. It was used primarily to detect contamination caused by ores and gases , as well as to register radiation and atmospheric pressure. ( TOS : " The Naked Time ", " The Enemy Within ", " The Doomsday Machine ", " Obsession ")

Tricorder, 2270s

A tricorder in use aboard the refit Enterprise in the 2270s

With the widespread redesign of many facets of Starfleet and Federation technology in the early 2270s , so too did the tricorder advance toward a new design.

Smaller than that of the 2260s, the new hand-held Starfleet tricorder was blue-gray in color and featured two grips on either side of the body. Controls and readout displays were located beneath a lid at the top of the device. ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture )

This type of tricorder was still in use in the 2280s . ( Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home )

As early as 2285 , Starfleet personnel like those serving aboard the refit starship Enterprise had at their disposal at least two distinct versions of the Starfleet tricorder.

Starfleet heavy tricorder, 2285

Heavy-duty tricorder

Among the options was a heavy-duty tricorder, often used during landing parties . Bulkier than previous designs, this tricorder featured a handle and a large head featuring a line of blinking indicator lights. ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

Starfleet tricorder, 2285

One tricorder option during the 2280s

Harking back to the designs of the 2260s, a second tricorder option in use during the mid- 2280s featured a familiar square, black and silver design.

Much smaller than the heavy-duty version, this model featured a slide-up top studded with controls and indicator lights. Also incorporating a strap, the tricorder could be slung over the shoulder when not in use. Unlike its predecessors, this tricorder possessed control surfaces over much of the body of the instrument. ( Star Trek III: The Search for Spock )

24th century [ ]

By the early 2360s , the Starfleet tricorder had taken on a more streamlined appearance, distinguished by a flip-open design maximizing both portability and interface surface availability.

Incorporating several sensor clusters, these tricorders featured multi-channel communications assemblies, and multiple databank modules. Encompassing visual displays and graphic touch pad interfaces, the tricorder of the 2360s provided easy means for on the spot archive retrieval, the recording of away mission events, and constant scientific measurements including biological, geographical or meteorological.

TR-560 Tricorder VI [ ]

Standard tricorder [ ].

Tricorder VI TR-560

The TR-560 in 2365

In service as early as 2361 , the TR-560 Tricorder VI model sensing device was available to officers serving aboard such vessels as the USS Victory and the USS Enterprise -D . ( TNG : " Identity Crisis ", " Encounter at Farpoint ") With an array of sensors on the front of the device, this tricorder design flipped open to reveal a large number of control surfaces and a square display screen, roughly the same size as those utilized as early as the 2260s.

This version of the tricorder was equipped with a small hand sensor, stowed below the sensors, similar to that of the medical tricorder. ( TNG : " Angel One ")

The TR-560 tricorder was capable of communicating with non-Starfleet computer systems and contained a built-in universal translator . Data used one of these tricorders to access and replay the logs of the captain of a Promellian battle cruiser discovered by the Enterprise in 2366 . ( TNG : " Booby Trap ")

The tricorder was vulnerable to some computer viruses, even capable of transmitting them to other systems. A tricorder used by Data while investigating the Iconian homeworld fell victim to one of their viruses. In order to prevent propagation of the virus, Captain Jean-Luc Picard ordered the tricorder destroyed by Worf , who did so using a phaser . ( TNG : " Contagion ")

This version of the tricorder was not normally set up to detect neutrinos , nor was it typically designed to interface with a VISOR . Nevertheless, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge was able to jury rig a tricorder to communicate with his VISOR and provide a bearing on a neutrino source when he was stranded on Galorndon Core in 2366 . ( TNG : " The Enemy ")

Medical tricorder [ ]

See medical tricorder .

TR-580 Tricorder VII [ ]

Starfleet TR-580 tricorder

The TR-580 in 2370

In service between 2366 and 2372 , the Starfleet TR-580 Tricorder VII succeeded the TR-560 Tricorder VI. Retaining the same basic shape as the previous design, the TR-580s also incorporated hand sensors, but this feature was eventually phased out by 2370 . ( TNG : " The Vengeance Factor "; DS9 : " The Way of the Warrior ")

TR-580s could be used for a variety of tasks, including recording time trials. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I ") This tricorder was also configured to perform proximity checks every two minutes ( DS9 : " Move Along Home ") and was able to emit a photoplasmic trail to help locate lost crewmembers. ( VOY : " Twisted ")

One version of the TR-580 used by Jadzia Dax in 2370 featured a larger screen on the upper section. ( DS9 : " Blood Oath ")

Mister Tricorder

Data with a TR-580 he nicknamed "Mr. Tricorder."

TR-580s were capable of detecting dampening fields and if doors were magnetically sealed. ( TNG : " Chain Of Command, Part I "; Star Trek Generations ; VOY : " Phage ")

To prevent interference with objects, the TR-580 could be set to perform a passive scan. The model could also be locked into a continuous scan, thereby recording data, even when stowed. ( TNG : " Schisms ") Capable of communicating with non-Starfleet computer systems, the tricorder could be linked to other units, acting as a small computer network, easily relaying information to other locations. ( TNG : " Brothers "; VOY : " Emanations ", " Heroes and Demons ")

Sensor emissions from TR-580s could cause unpredictable changes in certain temporal distortions , and sometimes included polaric fields , allowing a user to scan for subspace fractures caused by polaric detonation. ( TNG : " Timescape "; VOY : " Time and Again ")

TR-580s were stored in most equipment lockers aboard Federation starships though it was common for personnel to keep them in their quarters . ( TNG : " Disaster ", " The Game ", " A Matter Of Time ")

Starfleet sometimes distributed TR-580 model tricorders to Federation allied worlds, including Bajoran personnel on space station Deep Space 9 . They could also be used by civilians, and were shipped en masse to areas in need, such as disaster sites. ( TNG : " True Q "; DS9 : " Babel ", " Tears of the Prophets ")

The standard TR-580 could function as a makeshift medical tricorder if necessary, although not all medical personnel were happy to do this. ( TNG : " Time's Arrow, Part II "; DS9 : " Emissary "; VOY : " Caretaker ")

Individuals were instructed in the use of the TR-580 by reading the tricorder operations manual . ( VOY : " Phage ")

Red tricorder [ ]

Red tricorder, Projections

A red tricorder in 2371

A variety of the standard tricorder appeared in USS Voyager 's sickbay in the year 2371 . Five tricorders of this type were included in little alcoves behind the three biobeds and to the left and right of the main entry to sickbay. ( VOY : " Eye of the Needle ") In 2372 , these tricorders were replaced by PADDs . Similar tricorders were included in the same locations in sickbay aboard the USS Enterprise -E in 2373 .

The medical version of the TR-580 tricorder was able to project holographic information and recordings, including those based on programs composed of algorithmic data collected from varying DNA strands crafted by a highly advanced civilisation . One such use case was on Vilmor II in 2369, where a scan of lichen growing in an ancient seabed resulted in the completion of a previously-stored partial DNA-based program, and its holographic playback from the tricorder. Holographic projection was used rarely, due possibly to substantial battery drainage. ( TNG : " The Chase ")

TR-590 Tricorder X [ ]

Mark X tricorder

The TR-590 Tricorder X

Succeeding the TR-580 Tricorder VII, the TR-590 Mark X tricorder was introduced sometime during 2371 ( VOY : " Relativity ", " Fury ", " Shattered ") and was used alongside the previous version until 2372 . ( VOY Season 1 ) It featured nearly identical control interfaces. The entire unit, however, was streamlined and made much smaller, featuring a more angular design. ( DS9 : " The Way of the Warrior "; VOY : " Initiations ") These tricorders were stored in most equipment lockers on board the USS Voyager . ( VOY : " Relativity ")

The Mark X tricorder could still function after being underwater. ( DS9 : " Rocks and Shoals "; Star Trek: Insurrection ) It could also function in hostile environments such as temperatures of 500 Kelvin , ( VOY : " Demon ") the upper atmosphere of a planet, ( VOY : " Rise ") and planets suffering nuclear winter . ( VOY : " Friendship One ")

The upper component of the TR-590 was capable of interfacing with a Starfleet desktop monitor and projecting a recorded image from the tricorder onto the screen. ( VOY : " Timeless ") The Mark X tricorder could also upload data it acquired remotely to a Federation starship. ( VOY : " Initiations ", " Future's End ", " Year of Hell ", " Equinox ", " Good Shepherd ")

The Mark X tricorder could be prevented from attaining credible readings when subjected to concentrated thoron particles , a trick devised by the Maquis . ( VOY : " Basics, Part II ")

Borg neural processor

A Borg neural processor attached to a tricorder

While the USS Enterprise was in the year 2063 , Captain Picard linked a Borg neural processor directly to a tricorder to learn of the Borg's plans to transform the deflector dish of the Enterprise into an interplexing beacon . ( Star Trek: First Contact )

After an incident with the timeship Aeon threw Voyager back to 20th century Earth , Captain Kathryn Janeway used a tricorder of this type to to access secured files on a computer at Chronowerx Industries . ( VOY : " Future's End ")

The subspace waveguide in a tricorder of this model could be easily configured to generate a dispersion signal, preventing transporter lock. While under the influence of errant subroutines , The Doctor used a tricorder to prevent Voyager from locating him after he abducted Kes . ( VOY : " Darkling ")

Scans from this tricorder created an electrostatic cascade when interacting with charged methogenic particles . This would cause the particles to ignite. This occurred when a Voyager away team boarded a damaged Malon export vessel flooded with methogenic particles, preventing use of tricorders during the mission. ( VOY : " Juggernaut ")

Starfleet Tricorder 2379

The Starfleet tricorder in 2379 .

Introduced as late as 2379 , yet another iteration of Starfleet tricorder departed from the distinct, flip-open style preceding it.

Distinguished by a slim, PADD-like appearance, the tricorder in use aboard such Starfleet vessels as the Enterprise -E in the late 2370s featured a large touchscreen interface. Silver in color, it was trimmed with black pads at the bottom and sides, with several buttons at the top. These buttons could be covered by a small hinged door, lined with indicator lights.

Among common data-gathering tasks, this version tricorder could be used to interface with starship systems including force field control.

In the alternate reality , the tricorder of the 2250s resembled its prime reality counterpart but was a smaller handheld device. Spock used the tricorder to activate a cold fusion device in the heart of a volcano on Nibiru in 2259 . ( Star Trek Into Darkness )

Starfleet tricorder (2404)

A Starfleet tricorder in 2404

In a timeline erased due to the actions of Admiral Kathryn Janeway , a new version of the tricorder was in use by the year 2404 .

An extension of the Mark X model, this tricorder featured the familiar hinged cover design, but contained more touch control surfaces in place of toggle switches. The casing was black or dark-gray. ( VOY : " Endgame ")

TR-890 Tricorder XV

The TR-890 Tricorder XV

During a possible version of the 29th century , the crew of the USS Relativity used a slim and sleek version of the tricorder, labeled a TR-890 Tricorder XV. Seven of Nine was given a TR-890 as she hunted for a temporal disruptor hidden on Voyager by Captain Braxton . ( VOY : " Relativity ")

In addition to the TR-890, a smaller, palm-sized device was in use during this period. Henry Starling found one aboard the Aeon and carried it with him at all times. He used it in an attempt to escape Voyager 's transporter when the ship tried to retrieve the Aeon in 1996 . ( VOY : " Future's End, Part II ")

32nd century [ ]

Tricom badge [ ].

By the 32nd century , the tricorder had become holographic. The technology for the tricorder had been miniaturized to the point where it could be included with other functions in the tricom badge . Activation and deactivation of the tricorder was triggered by hand gestures . ( DIS : " Scavengers ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

In 2012, Scanadu announced the SCOUT, which has been described as the real-life tricorder. The US$150 device can show one's temperature, respiratory rate, electrocardiography, blood pressure (systolic, diastolic), stress and oximetry levels by scanning a person's left temple. [4]

Mike Lazaridis , inventor of the BlackBerry , has set up a fund to make the tricorder a reality using quantum technology. [5]

Apocrypha [ ]

In the future 2400 's timeline of Star Trek Online , tricorders are shown to have a more hinged design reminiscent of the Mark VI through X designs, including removable scanners. To perform various tasks, Starfleet , Klingon Defense Force and Romulan personnel all use tricorders in conjunction with other equipment (both worn and carried) capable of projecting "floating" holographic interfaces.

Raspberry Pi Tricorder: The Next Generation

Scotty would be proud of this level of engineering

A prototype build of the Tricorder project lays on a desk

What is it about Raspberry Pi and homebrew electronics projects that seems to attract the Star Trek fans? We couldn’t possibly say, but this awesome tricorder project from Chris "directive0" Barrett is the second we’ve seen this week, so there could be a whole universe of them out there.

Barrett’s design is actually the second one he’s produced, and he’s been working on it since January 2018. It blends a custom mainboard PCB, complete with Starfleet delta, with a Raspberry Pi Zero W and top mounted sensor board with LEDs set to mimic the onscreen prop. The tricorder's sensors are able to sense temperature, humidity, air pressure and VOC gas sensing unit for passive environmental readings, plus a non-contact thermometer and a small IR thermal camera for measuring temperature at range. Barrett hopes to add another gas-detecting sensor too, this time for picking up traces of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia, methane, propane, and iso-butane in the atmosphere.

The shell is 3D printed, and modelled on the flip-open TR-590 Mark VI Tricorder seen in Star Trek the Next Generation that looks a bit like a Game Boy Advance SP on growth hormones (though it looks more like the TR-580 Tricorder VII in service between 2366 and 2372 to us). Custom-printed stickers supply the necessary Star Trek aesthetic.

The newest design of the mainboard includes capacitive touchscreen compatibility, and a shift register to drive the LED lighting, plus a single transistor audio amplifier. A simple LCD display provides visual output. The custom PCB requires further revisions, so the Tricorder isn’t fully functional yet. PicorderOS, a Python library, runs the show, unifying the different modules under a custom user interface. You can read about the whole ingenious project on Barrett’s wiki .

These ER Docs Invented a Real Star Trek Tricorder

Brothers George, Basil and Gus Harris examine prop tricorders from the Star Trek series.

The original 1960s Star Trek series took place in a universe of the future with personal communicators, holograms, and the technology to send humans beyond our solar system. In many ways that future is here. We have smartphones, virtual reality, space travel — and now the tricorder.

In the show, the tricorder was a handheld medical device that could scan a patient, read his or her vital signs, and diagnose problems in minutes. A working prototype invented by a Philadelphia-based emergency room physician Basil Harris may not look like the ones used by Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Commander Beverly Crusher throughout the sci-fi series, but it’s advanced enough to offer a medical diagnosis in minutes and anyone can use it.

Related: This Revolutionary Gene-Editing Tool Could Change the World

The device — which won top honors during the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition — still needs to undergo more testing and receive regulatory approval before it’s available to consumers. But Harris said that may happen in just a few years and he’s aiming to keep the price around $200.

“It’s doing exactly what I do in the ER,” Harris explains. It starts by continuously monitoring a patient's vital signs and then asks questions through its smartphone or tablet app to better understand the symptoms. “It uses all of that objective information together in the way your doctor would to come up with a diagnosis.”

Out of the box, DxtER looks like a medical kit with an orb-shaped digital stethoscope, an EKG sensor that sticks to your chest, a spirometer to measure lung function, and a finger probe that non-invasively measures glucose, white blood cell count, and other blood tests.

DxtER is the real-life version of the Star Trek Tricorder

The device's app explains how to use each of the sensors and once attached those sensors send the patient's vital signs to the app for diagnosis. And similar to the tricorder in the shows, the device can diagnose a variety of problems including pneumonia, sleep apnea, diabetes, a UTI, and 30 other conditions.

“It’s really like a complete office visit in a 5-pound box,” Harris says.

He and a team of doctors and engineers have been working on DxtER since 2012. As part of winning April's XPRIZE competition, the team received a $2.6 million to help get the needed regulatory approvals and take the next steps to produce and market the device.

Related: Algorithms Learn From Us, and We Can Be Better Teachers

The capabilities of these devices could dramatically change everyday life for a lot of people, says Grant Campany, project lead for the Tricorder XPRIZE competition.

"[For individuals with chronic dieseases] who have a hard time even getting into the hospital, being able to manage their care from their home is a profound improvement,” Campany says. “Anything we can do to keep people healthy and not at the hospital translates into economic benefit, too.”

In rural areas where communities don’t have access to healthcare facilities, devices like these could have a big impact on the quality of care available, Campany adds. “The opportunity is just completely transformational.”

Harris predicts people will soon use personal medical tricorder devices at home — and that tricorders will play a big role in the future of healthcare.

Star Trek

Making Healthcare Smarter

DxtER is able to analyze and record symptoms as soon as patients first start having them, Harris explains, which means faster and better care.

“Acute ailments could be diagnosed and managed from home — or with improved, focused access in medical facilities," he says. "Many chronic conditions could be better managed, keeping people healthy and out of hospitals."

“It’s really like a complete office visit in a 5-pound box."

Imagine you have a 3-year-old daughter who wakes up Saturday morning with a phlegmy cough and slight fever. You suspect it’s more than a cold, but your pediatrician’s office is closed until Monday. DxtER could quickly tell you whether she has pneumonia and needs to be taken to a 24-hour clinic — or whether she just needs rest, Harris explains.

Or if your aging father who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) one day seems to be more worn out than usual, DxtER could record his vital signs and help decide whether he should go to the emergency room. And if you go to the ER, data from the tricorder will help the doctor better understand the symptoms to decide what care your father needs.

“Five years from now when someone comes into my ER with their tricorder device — whether it’s ours or another one — I want to be able to believe that data and take the next step,” Harris says. The goal is for DxtER to make it easier to deliver higher quality care to more people more efficiently.

The artificial intelligence algorithms DxtER uses to diagnose conditions were based on Harris’ 12 years of clinical experience as an ER doctor. His team also ran several chart review studies during which they compared DxtER’s evaluation of real patient data with the diagnoses those patients received. That data allowed the team to refine the algorithms for DxtER’s AI.

The complete DxtER prototype was tested by XPRIZE for the competition (along with other entries) in a lab at the University of California San Diego.

“I think we’re going to see a lot of evolution and transformation over the next three to five years,” Campany says. The ways we collect health data have transformed over the last decade, making a real tricorder possible, reliable, and affordable, he adds.

Related: The Quest to Create Artificial Blood May Soon Be Over

Another team in the competition, Dynamical Biomarkers Group out of China, plans to market their tricorder device for use in its country's rural villages to facilitate better care where it isn’t available.

The next step for Harris’ team is getting FDA approval for each component of DxtER and then approval of the complete device. They are in the process of launching a trial to validate the safety and effectiveness of DxtER’s finger probe as a non-invasive glucose sensor, hemoglobin sensor, and white blood cell count sensor.

That component alone could dramatically change how people with diabetes manage their condition, Harris says, “saving them from the hassle and pain of multiple finger sticks a day.”

The Power Relies on the Data

Others share Harris’ and Campany’s optimism for tricorder technology, but say the changes won't happen overnight.

“This technology could potentially gain more power when we are able to collect huge amounts of data,” says Dr. Gene Fridman, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who was not involved in developing DxtER or in the XPRIZE competition (but has invented the “ MouthLab ” device, which uses AI to test a person’s vital signs via a small mouthpiece and thumb sensor).

Tricorders won't replace doctors, Friedman says. But the more data they gather and the better the AI is able to predict and diagnose ailments, the more these devices will help individuals at home make smarter decisions about when to get care, which ultimately leads to more efficient and less expensive care overall.

By Friedman's estimates, “in the next 10 to 20 years it’s going to be a big revolution in personal healthcare."

The Star Trek Tricorder Becomes Real

Jack Trestrail

Medical emergency in Star Trek ? Quick Doctor, grab the Tricorder. We’ve all seen the medical episodes of Star Trek . It usually involves the doctor using his or her devices to diagnose how the captain is almost killed off this week. Thanks to IdentifySensors Biologics , the Star Trek Tricorder Becomes Real . Trek is well known for inspiring real-world technology, and it appears to have done it again.

Last year, we caught up with the team at Identify Sensors to check out their new tech. They had developed Check4™ -an affordable handheld device for molecular disease diagnostics, including COVID-19 (and other pathogens). Upon further inspection, it did appear like a modern-day Star Trek Tricorder. We’ve also recently caught up with Dr Gregory Hummer, the Founder & CEO of IdentifySensors. Catch our interview and discussion with him over the next few weeks.

star trek prodigy tricorder

Technology Advancements

However, advancements have been made since we last caught up with the team. IdentifySensors Biologics has partnered with  Jabil Inc.  The global manufacturing solutions company will develop processes for the Check4 device. The partnership means that IdentifySensors are one step closer to the Star Trek Tricorder Becoming Real. The small portable devices, branded Check4 ® , consist of two main parts. A multiple-use electronic reader about the size of a cell phone. And single-use test cartridges that detect as many as four separate infections simultaneously.

Speaking about the new partnership, CEO Dr Gregory Hummer had this to say.

“We are very pleased to work with Jabil,” said Gregory Hummer, M.D., CEO and cofounder of IdentifySensors. “Jabil has the experience and bandwidth to ensure this testing platform is manufactured efficiently and effectively with the highest quality controls in the industry. They will be a great partner for us.” Gregory Hummer M.D, CEO – IdentifySensors Biologics

IdentifySensors Biologics developed the technology in partnership with Purdue University, which helped commercialize the process. The technology and applications are secured through multiple patents. However, Can the dream of a Star Trek Medical Tricorder be brought to life? While we’ve had plenty of replicas over time, IdentifySensors seems to be making something close to the real deal. With our turbulent world, I can easily see the Check4 device becoming widely used.

star trek prodigy tricorder

Why Is This Technology Significant?

You might be asking yourself, why is this news? Well, as we know from Star Trek , medical breakthroughs can change the course of human history. Therefore, it’s only a matter of time before we, as humans, do something similar. This is what IdentifySensors are doing. As they say, the COVID pandemic exposed how current pathogen detection methods can be slow and inefficient.

By moving the testing from a chemical-reaction model to a digital readout, IdentifySensors is projected to significantly disrupt the $50 billion diagnostics industry that will make most existing tests obsolete. Therefore, we’re watching as the Star Trek Tricorder Becomes Real. A big factor is the lower cost for individuals and healthcare providers. During my conversation with Doctor Hummer, we discussed how important this is.

About IdentifySensors Biologics

IdentifySensors Biologics is a Cleveland-based pathogen-detection platform technology company focused on developing real-time pathogen detection capabilities. Additionally, the company’s technology has expanded into multiple industries and applications, such as diagnostics, food safety & sustainability, environmental monitoring and national security.

The company is currently seeking investment to make the device become a reality. Interested readers can head to the website to check out the investment overview .

Personally, I’ll never forget that moment in Star Trek: Voyager where Ensign Harry Kim hands The Doctor (Robert Picardo) the wrong Tricorder. The Doctor scolds the young Ensign by saying, “Medical Tricorder”. Instantly I was curious about what this device could do. However, looking at the Check4 device, it’s fantastic—offering us a new way to self-diagnose ourselves effectively. I’m excited for Trek Central to be working with IdentifySensors. Additionally, showing more of the device to Star Trek fans in 2023.

Star Trek’s tricorder inspires new medical technology!

star trek prodigy tricorder

An extraordinary panel was held this afternoon at the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego.

The Science and Science Fiction of Star Trek’s Tricorder brought together four panelists who are helping to lead our way into the future. It will be a future of almost unlimited possibility, replete with groundbreaking technologies what were barely imagined when the original television series was created.

Dr. Erik Viirre, who acted as moderator, is Professor of Neurosciences at UC San Diego; Dr. Paul E. Jacobs is Chairman and CEO of XCOM Labs, and former executive chairman of Qualcomm; Dr. Yvonne Cagle is a physician, professor, retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, and former NASA astronaut; Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, the CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment and head of the Roddenberry Foundation , is the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett. He is also an executive producer on Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The first thing the audience learned is that all four panelists are fans of Star Trek! (Did you know that the former head of Qualcomm, many moons ago, was founding member of Star Fleet Club La Jolla?)

The next thing we learned was that Star Trek has inspired generations of scientists, engineers, inventors and visionaries. Many technological advances we know today were first conceived by Gene Roddenberry and the experts he turned to for advice when writing the show. He wanted Star Trek to be believable and largely based on science.

We were reminded how Star Trek’s communicator became the actual flip phone, and how today’s smartphones have essentially become Star Trek’s tricorder. Think about it!

The various multi-function tricorders carried by Spock, McCoy, and other Star Trek characters could provide a user with all sorts of useful information. A tricorder could be used to ascertain location and weather, or analyze the physical environment or obtain cultural information. A tricorder could be used as a universal translator. It could even be used to assess one’s medical condition.

In many ways, your smartphone does all of those things today!

We then learned our own future contains even greater possibilities.

The panelists explained how a smartphone, or handheld mobile device, used by an ordinary person, could become a practical health tool. For example, such a medical “tricorder” could analyze the sound of irregular breathing or a cough and determine a likely medical condition or disease. And such a device, by detecting signals or other data from the user’s body, could provide a warning that a stroke or heart attack is imminent.

Projects like that are underway today!

Five years ago, The Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE was a $10 million global competition to incentivize the development of innovative technologies capable of accurately diagnosing a set of 13 medical conditions independent of a healthcare professional or facility, ability to continuously measure 5 vital signs, and have a positive consumer experience. Read more about it here .

The co-winning Canadian team, CloudDX, propelled by their Tricorder XPRIZE participation, has gone on to commercialize remote, connected patient monitoring hardware and software that anyone can easily use at home!

And that’s just the beginning.

On the International Space Station today, 250 miles above Earth, astronauts wear a Smart Shirt that senses body temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen, EKG, and even the activity of heart valves!

Can you imagine a virtual reality doctor’s visit in your future? (Oh, wait. Star Trek envisioned this already. USS Voyager’s Emergency Medical Holographic Doctor.) Advances in artificial intelligence and tele-medicine have just barely begun.

(And yes, virtual reality was envisioned many decades ago. It was the basis for many tangled plots on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The holodeck!)

Those who sat listening to this extraordinary Comic-Con Museum panel learned all of this, and more. We saw that, in the hands of thoughtful people who desire positive, healthy outcomes, our technological future can be very bright, indeed.

‘Star Trek’ Fan Leaves Behind a Collection Like No One Has Done Before

When Troy Nelson died, his shelves were filled to the rafters with memorabilia from the popular franchise. Soon, the massive collection will be boldly going, going, gone.

Editors’ Note, April 2, 2024: After publication, The Times learned that Troy and Andrew Nelson were named in a civil lawsuit filed in Pierce County Superior Court in 1998, in which they were accused of molesting three disabled adults in a state-licensed facility that they operated. After a six-week jury trial, Washington State was ordered to pay $17.8 million to the plaintiffs. The state said it intended to appeal but missed the deadline and paid the victims. The Nelson brothers denied the allegations and were never criminally charged.

Troy Nelson and his younger brother Andrew were almost inseparable.

The two youngest of six, they were born two years apart. They lived together in their childhood home in Bremerton, Wash., for more than half a century. Near their home, there is a park bench on which they carved their initials as young boys.

The Nelson brothers never married or had children. They worked together at the same senior home. They even once, as teenagers, dated the same girl at the same time while working different shifts at the same pizza shop. This lasted a week until they realized it.

“Two parts of one body,” Evan Browne, their older sister, said of their relationship in an interview.

On Feb. 28, Andrew Nelson, who had been treated for cancer for years, went to feed the chickens and ducks that were gifts from Ms. Browne to her brothers. He had a heart attack and died. He was 55. Just hours later, Troy Nelson, who was stricken with grief, took his own life. He was 57.

“He had talked about it before,” Browne, 66, said, tearfully. “He said, ‘Hey, if Andrew goes, I’m out of here. I’m checking out.’ Andrew would say the same thing, and then it really happened .”

Figurines of various characters in the Star Trek series stand on shelves. A statuette of Captain Kirk is among those on the top shelf.

What Troy Nelson left behind has become a sensation. After his death, family members posted pictures on social media of his massive — and, really, the keyword is massive — collection of “Star Trek” memorabilia, which have now been shared thousands of times.

The items took up two living rooms and a bedroom, all lined with bookshelves, according to Elena Hamel, one of the brothers’ nieces. The centers of the rooms were lined with additional bookshelves — all packed to the brim — to create aisles. There were jewelry cabinets serving as display cases.

The shelves contained action figures. Dolls. Models of ships. Posters. Ornaments. Lunchboxes. Legos. Several toy phasers and tricorders. (For non-Trek fans, the phaser is a weapon, and a tricorder is, essentially, a fancy smartphone.) Multiple “Star Trek” lamps. (Yes, there are “Star Trek” lamps.) Trading cards. Comic books. Trek-themed Geeki Tikis (stylized tiki mugs). Life-size cutouts of famous characters. A life-size captain’s chair.

While it’s impossible to account for every private collector in the world, Troy Nelson’s collection is almost assuredly among the largest — if not the largest.

The last additions to the collection came in the final weeks of his life: Stuffed rabbits in “Star Trek” uniforms. “I’ve never seen a collection that size,” said Russ Haslage, the president of the International Federation of Trekkers , a “Star Trek”-themed nonprofit that Haslage founded with Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the franchise.

Haslage’s organization opened in 2020 a “Star Trek” museum in Sandusky, Ohio, that has received donations of memorabilia from estates. Those collections “pale in comparison” to Mr. Nelson’s, he said. (Haslage has reached out to the family to ask about donations from the collection.)

The older brother’s love of “Star Trek” began with the original series, which he’d watch with his siblings.

“It was our dinner meal,” Ms. Browne said. “When we had dinner, we were sitting in front of ‘Star Trek.’”

Troy Nelson began collecting in the late-1970s. His first acquisition was a model version of the Starship Enterprise. Then came Star Trek conventions. Why the franchise was such a draw to him remains a mystery to his family.

“I really can’t say. I mean, other than the fact that he was brainwashed with it at dinner time,” Browne said, laughing. “That sounds ridiculous. When we grew up, it’s like, ‘Dinner is at this time. And if you don’t get here at this time, you don’t get dinner.’ So it might’ve been a comfort for him .”

Troy Nelson would often monitor sites like eBay for items he didn’t have. On several occasions, he would express frustration on losing out on an item before being able to bid on it. Until he found out the reason.

“Andrew already got it for him,” Ms. Browne recalled.

Obsessive “Star Trek” fandom has long become an indelible part of pop culture, especially as the franchise — which has spawned several television series, movies, novels and comics — has been a long-running institution. There have been documentaries that have studied the subject, such as “Trekkies” in 1997. It’s been lampooned on “The Simpsons,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Family Guy,” and become a story line in an episode of “The West Wing,” among many others. For dedicated fans, accruing collectibles isn’t uncommon.

“When you collect these things, you’re closer to that genre that you enjoy so much,” Haslage said. “When I first started in 1979, I was grabbing everything I could get my hands on because it was cool, and it was a piece of the whole ‘Star Trek’ mythos. If you have these pieces, you’re a part of that universe in some way.”

It turns out that collecting is a pursuit that runs in the family.

Andrew Nelson collected mall swords, Ryobi-branded tools and statues of warrior women, like Xena, the warrior princess .

Browne’s house has a wall with thousands of smashed pennies and her living room windows are full of glass sugar and creamer bowls.

Browne’s father, Bud Peers, collected salt and pepper shakers, guns and knives. Troy and Andrew’s father, Norman Nelson, collected scrap metal and wood.

Hamel has 17 Christmas trees, all fully decorated with separate themes.

Browne’s son, Michael, who is 36, collects anything and everything related to black bears.

“ When you have a large collection like that and it’s displayed like that,” Hamel said, “and it’s something that is important to you, it’s often really calming to be in a space like that. It’s just all the things that you love. It’s soothing.”

As far as Browne knew, Troy had no history of mental illness or any previous suicide attempts. After Andrew died, she received a distraught and frantic call from Troy with the news. She told him that she was on her way.

Ms. Browne said she called him when she got to the Tacoma Bridge. No answer. And then again, at the Manette Bridge. No answer. When she reached their home, the back door was open. And then she found him. The phone call was the last time they spoke.

Troy Nelson did not leave a note, but did leave some things meticulously arranged by his computer, including a key to the house, burial plans for the two brothers, and bills.

“ I don’t know really what I thought,” Ms. Browne said. “All I could do was just scream.”

The Nelson family is boxing up Troy’s “Star Trek” collection to prepare it for auction. Andrew’s ashes will be placed in an urn carved in the likeness of the supermodel Bettie Page . (He was a fan.) Troy’s ashes will be placed in a “Star Trek” lunchbox.

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources.

Review: The EXO-6 ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’ 1:6 Odo Figure Is The Shape of Things To Come

Constable Odo 1/6 Scale Action Figure

Manufacturer: EXO-6 Price: $215 Grade: A+

Way back in the no-man’s land between the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan , when it briefly looked like there might be no more Star Trek movies and there hadn’t been a new Star Trek TV show since the 1973 animated series, I had a weird dream one night that there was a new Star Trek series on the air and one of the actors in it was René Auberjonois. At the time I knew Auberjonois from his performances in the 1976 King Kong remake and The Eyes of Laura Mars (where he did an uncanny impression of Lloyd Bridges using only his face).

What I didn’t imagine was that Auberjonois would indeed appear in a new Star Trek show a decade or so later—but his face would be covered by a thick layer of latex makeup and he would be playing an alien shapeshifter named Odo. Like Spock, Data, and later characters like Seven of Nine and Saru, Odo was part of the Star Trek formula that dictated an alien “other” character was always needed to provide an outsider perspective on humanity. A holdover from the Cardassian’s shepherding of their space station Terok Nor, Odo retained his job as a security officer to become Deep Space Nine’s “constable”—a sheriff who keeps a close eye on the denizens that live on and visit DS9, particularly his arch nemesis, the Ferengi Quark. Odo can use his shapeshifting abilities to impersonate other beings or even disguise himself as inanimate objects—all a boon to his work maintaining law and order on the station.

Odo’s origins were initially mysterious, even to himself (in one first season episode after chasing what he’d thought to be a clue to his background, a lonely Odo gazes out into space from a runabout and ponders, “Home…where is it?”). Eventually, he discovers that he’s part of the race of the Founders, dangerous “changelings” and founders of the Dominion, a warlike confederation of races that threatens the Federation. Odo consequently finds himself torn between loyalty to his friends on DS9 and the race that gave birth to him. Auberjonois, a reliable and effective character actor, gave Odo a gruff, no-nonsense personality that set him off from DS9’s mix of hotheads, pious clerics, and very human Starfleet officers. He figured in some tremendous storylines, although I wish the show hadn’t gone in the direction of putting him and Major Kira—two of the strongest characters in the series—in a standard romance that ultimately weakened both of them.

EXO-6 Odo Figure

EXO-6’s Deep Space Nine line of 12” action figures has been absolutely stellar in its quality, and Odo might just be the best release yet. One might think that capturing Odo’s deliberately featureless prosthetic makeup would be a breeze, but it actually seems more like a trap as the proportions of the character’s face come off as deliberately vague and confusing due to the makeup. Sculptor Dean Tolliver pulls off the assignment flawlessly, from Odo’s prim, downturned mouth to his piercing, deep-set eyes.

One big challenge to these characters is hair—it has to be molded into the one-piece head sculpt which often gives the entire character a plastic, doll-like sheen. Odo’s hair even in the series has an uncanny, sleek appearance that lends itself well to this kind of reproduction—there’s a very fine seam bisecting the head, something you can catch with careful examination on this and some other EXO figures, but it mostly disappears within the hair sculpture, and that’s really the only minor flaw (if you can call it that) in the figure.

star trek prodigy tricorder

Odo’s clothes are of drab and utilitarian Bajoran make, almost allowing him to disappear among the brown and bronze arches of the space station’s promenade, and the figure captures the cut of the uniform, its Bajoran insignia, belt and boots perfectly.

If you watch the series, you know that Odo doesn’t roll with standard Starfleet weaponry—he’s his own weapon, with the ability to turn his arms into whiplike tendrils or any other shape that might come in handy to subdue a scofflaw. Odo comes with the standard Starfleet PADD and a tricorder, but this figure boasts two more-character-based accessories that really set this release off and required a larger-than-normal collectors box. One accessory is Odo’s “bucket”—a metallic container that the shapeless being relaxes inside in liquid form after a hard day’s crime-fighting. EXO also includes a spectacular clear vinyl sculpture of Odo in mid-transformation, congealing upwards from a puddle on the floor, his arms folded and his distinctive features starting to take shape.

Bucket and shape-shifting accessories for EXO-6 DS9 Odo figure

These accessories make Odo’s display footprint about twice the size of a normal EXO-6 figure, but it’s worth it, especially since at $215 he’s in line with most of the other DS9 figure price points.

Odo was released today and is available now at EX0-6.com .  This is another spectacular figure release from EXO-6 and since they tend to sell out quickly, you’d be well advised to order ASAP.

The Odo figure is part of EXO-6’s Star Trek: Deep Space Nine collection. Quark and Sisko have already sold out. The Kira figure [ see TrekMovie’s review ] is still available. Dr. Julian Bashir is next in line , but the pre-order period has already sold out.

Incredible detail, the greatest representation….

Finally, an EXO sculpt that actually looks like the character.

Kind of funny that it’s the one with a deliberately featureless messed up face.

Wow. I sold my TMP Kirk and Spock due to the poor likenesses.

But this actually looks really good. Maybe….

Gotta admit, this IS a good one! 🫤 If only I had the bars of latinum… 😒💸

This looks absolutely fabulous!! 😍

Well done. These are so well done. Not surprised they keep selling out.

I sure hope Hiya Toys can give us a diverse range of Star Trek figures drawing from the entire legacy of Star Trek like Exo-6 is doing here. Playmates has certainly dropped the ball but I still have faith that a good quality line could be a success. I hope unlike Playmates, Hiya will take fan’s comments and input into consideration like Exo-6 is also doing. We fans like feeling like we have some say in the thought process of creating a line and being appreciated by the teams responsible for developing products like this and Playmates just took all our patronage for granted.

Screen Rant

Voyager is why star trek is replacing discovery’s spore drive.

Starfleet is abandoning the spore drive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, having found a better form of warp travel thanks to the USS Voyager.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 bids farewell to the spore drive, as USS Voyager's pathway drive takes over in the 32nd century.
  • Commander Stamets reveals Starfleet's decision to halt spore drive development, making Discovery unique in the Star Trek franchise.
  • The USS Voyager-J's pathway drive paves the way for safer and sustainable warp travel in Star Trek's future.

The 32nd century's version of the USS Voyager is the reason that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is abandoning Starfleet's revolutionary spore drive technology. Since they arrived in the 32nd century in season 3, the USS Discovery crew's one-of-a-kind spore drive has represented a potential replacement for dilithium-reliant warp travel in Star Trek 's future . However, various obstacles, most notably rogue Risan scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and his theft of the only working prototype have prevented the spore drive from being rolled out.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) reveals that Starfleet has shuttered further development on the spore drive . Starfleet's decision means that the USS Discovery will remain one-of-a-kind, making season 5 the last outing for Starfleet's spore drive. Instead of taking Discovery's spore drive further, Starfleet are instead forging ahead with the new pathway drive, first trialed by the USS Voyager-J in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek Is Ditching Discovery's Spore Drive - And That's Good!

Uss voyager is why star trek is quitting discovery’s spore drive, voyager has a history of scientific advancement in starfleet..

In Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 premiere, "Kobayashi Maru", it was revealed that the USS Voyager-J had been newly fitted with a protoype pathway drive . Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) was looking for the right captain to command the ship and test out this new technology. Now, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive" reveals that those tests were successful, leading to the pathway drive being the new standard for future Starfleet ships. The rollout is still in the early stages, however, as Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) states that his ship, the USS Antares, doesn't have a pathway drive fitted.

Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) was under consideration to command the USS Voyager-J, but President Rillak didn't believe that she was ready.

It feels appropriate that the USS Voyager is responsible for replacing Star Trek: Discovery 's spore drive, given its namesake's impact on warp travel centuries earlier . Star Trek: Prodigy revealed that, after returning to the Alpha Quadrant, much of the technology the USS Voyager encountered in the Delta Quadrant was adapted by Starfleet. For example, the USS Dauntless, commanded by Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) had a quantum slipstream drive fitted, first encountered in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 finale, "Hope and Fear".

10 Ways USS Voyager Changed In Star Trek’s Delta Quadrant

When will we see star trek: discovery's pathway drive in action.

As the USS Discovery is in the middle of a vitally important mission to find the Progenitors' technology to create life, it doesn't seem like there will be much time for a refit. Therefore, it's unlikely that Discovery will be using the pathway drive at any point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It's certainly possible that Captain Burnham could receive assistance from a starship like the USS Voyager-J at some later point in Discovery season 5, but it's also possible that the pathway drive was just a tease of things to come in the now- canceled Star Trek: Discovery season 6 .

As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will pick up the baton in the 32nd century, however, making it the most likely candidate for a pathway drive demonstration . As it will focus on a batch of new recruits, the Starfleet Academy show feels like an ideal way to reveal more about the pathway drive. As the cadets learn how a pathway drive works, and how it differs from a more traditional warp drive, so too will Star Trek fans who tune into the YA-oriented show. Starfleet Academy leading the way with a new warp drive replacement would be a fitting way to continue the legacy of Star Trek: Discovery and its spore drive.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is looking to begin production in late summer 2024.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

After being closed for over a hundred years, Starfleet Academy is reopening its doors to those who wish to pursue a career as Starfleet Officers. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will follow a new group of cadets as they come of age, and build friendships, rivalries, and romantic relationships while being threatened by a new adversary that could destroy the Academy and the Federation itself.

Why Star Trek Keeping Standard Warp Travel Is Best

The specifics of how the pathway drive works are still a mystery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but it's presumably rooted in traditional warp travel. The spore drive was an incredibly complicated method of travel that required specific calculations and a willing host to navigate the mycelial network . In "Red Directive", Stamets states that, with more time, he could have worked out the issues with navigation, but never got the chance. The grisly fate of the USS Glenn in Discovery season 1 revealed that the slightest miscalculation in spore drive navigation could have devastating consequences for the crew.

Presumably, the pathway drive is a means to achieve warp travel while using less dilithium, to reduce the Federation's reliance on it following the scarcity caused by the Burn. This is therefore a less risky proposition, which will be why Starfleet are now rolling it out following the USS Voyager-J's successful trial. While it may be disappointing for Stamets in Star Trek: Discovery , the pathway drive's potential to make warp travel safer and more sustainable should be something to celebrate.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 is streaming on Netflix.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek Voyager

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

The Star Trek Origins Movie Is Officially Moving Forward, But I Have Two Serious Concerns About It

Am I the only one wondering about these things?

Zachary Quinto's Spock and Chris Pine's Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness

If you have a Paramount+ subscription , you know full well how the Star Trek franchise has been thriving on TV again for many years now. Streaming has allowed the shows like Discovery , Picard , Strange New Worlds , Prodigy (which is now housed at Netflix) and Lower Decks to be made, and there are more upcoming Star Trek TV shows on the way, as well as the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 movie . However, not the franchise’s theatrical film side of things, we haven’t seen anything since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , but apparently that’s about to change. Paramount Pictures is officially moving forward with that Star Trek origins movie that was reported about earlier this year , though after hearing this news, I can’t help but have two serious concerns about it.

During the Paramount presentation at CinemaCon today that CinemaBlend attended, it was mentioned that this Star Trek movie, which will be directed by Andor ’s Toby Haynes and written by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ’s Seth Grahame-Smith, is set to begin production later this year and is expected to be released sometime in 2025. Beyond that, no other details were revealed, so the only other thing we know about this project is that it’s set decades before the events of 2009’s Star Trek , i.e. the movie that kicked off the alternate timeline which follows Chris Pine’s James Kirk, Zachary Quito’s Spock and more.

Therein lies my first concern with this origins movie: exactly how is this going to function as a prequel? Not to get too nerdy, but the point of divergence between the Kelvin timeline and the main Star Trek timeline occurs when Nero’s ship’s came back in time to the former reality, which also happened to be the same day James Kirk was born. Everything before that day happened the same way in both timelines, including the events of the TV show Star Trek: Enterprise . So because that series chronicled Starfleet’s first deep-space exploration and ended with the formation of the United Federation of Planets, what origin is there to tell?

The main thing I can think of at the moment is we’d learn how Starfleet and the United Federation became the powerhouse forces they are by the time the 2009 Star Trek movie begins. But even setting aside the fact that this doesn’t need to be classified as a Kelvin timeline exclusive-story since again, such events would have happened the same way in both realities, would this make for a compelling enough cinematic event? With talent like Haynes and Grahame-Smith behind it, I hope so.

My second concern with this Star Trek origins movie is what this means for Star Trek 4 , i.e. the Star Trek Beyond follow-up. We’re coming up on 10 years of this project trying to get off the ground, with various behind-the-scenes creative talent boarding and exiting it, including director Matt Shakman, who left to helm The Fantastic Four . It seems like Star Trek 4 can’t catch a break, and I’m worried that this origins movie will result in it being shelved for good.

Now to be fair, when this origin story’s existence was revealed, it was mentioned that Star Trek 4 was still in “active development’ and is intended to be “the final chapter of the series.” So on face value, Paramount reportedly intends to give this version of the USS Enterprise crew a proper farewell, but given how many attempts to move Star Trek 4 forward have failed, will prioritizing the Star Trek origins movie will once again result in the other movie falling by the wayside? At this point, if Star Trek 4 does get made, it’s not coming out until well over a decade after Beyond . Is it even worth being remotely optimistic about its chances anymore?

As a longtime Star Trek fan, I’ll end up seeing this origins movie regardless, but these concerns will keep weighing on my mind until more information comes to light. Naturally we’ll pass along any major updates that come in, but for now, you can look through our 2024 movies schedule to stay on top of the cinematic entertaining coming out later this year.
