Sonic showers have been in use aboard Federation starships at least as early as the 2250s , and were described as relaxing. ( SNW : " Under the Cloak of War ") High-pitched sonic showers serve a similar effect as to what a "cold shower" serves. ( DS9 : " If Wishes Were Horses "; VOY : " Juggernaut ")

Quark once claimed that one thing that would make a Human " as nasty and violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon " would be if they did not have access to sonic showers. ( DS9 : " The Siege of AR-558 ")

The technology was a means to eliminate the need for water used in bathing. However, various Starfleet vessels are still equipped with conventional water dispensing hygiene applications such as a shower or a bath tub . ( SNW : " Under the Cloak of War "; ( TNG : " Genesis "; Star Trek: Insurrection ; VOY : " Caretaker ", " Q2 ") In 2375 , the visiting Kadi monk Tomin could not use the sonic showers aboard the USS Voyager as they only washed with purified water, necessitating the installation of an ablutionary fountain in his quarters. Although the technology was generally considered very effective, it did have limits on certain applications. In 2380 , Commander T'Ana , a Caitian , noted that it was very difficult for sonic showers to remove cheese from fur . ( LD : " Terminal Provocations ")

Components and malfunctions [ ]

One of the components of a sonic shower was an acoustic inverter . When an acoustic inverter broke, the sound created by the sonic shower has been described as being able to "make your hair stand on end". Another separate sonic shower malfunction aboard the USS Voyager was enough to shatter a nearby mirror. ( VOY : " Live Fast and Prosper ") When repairs were needed, a decoupler was the standard device used for checking sonic shower relays. ( DS9 : " Nor the Battle to the Strong "; VOY : " Day of Honor ")

Separately, sonic showers can be reprogrammed for more nefarious purposes, as was the case during Wesley Crusher 's first week at Starfleet Academy , where Adam Martoni reprogrammed Crusher's sonic shower to cover him with mud . ( TNG : " The Game ")

One of the ways in which Benjamin Sisko occupied himself when the USS Defiant was on its way to Ajilon Prime in 2373 was to check the sonic shower relays. ( DS9 : " Nor the Battle to the Strong ")

During the Occupation of Bajor , Bajoran comfort women were told to use Terok Nor 's sonic showers for the Cardassians , who value cleanliness. ( DS9 : " Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night ")

In 2364 , a woman was found frozen to death by Geordi La Forge in the sonic shower aboard the SS Tsiolkovsky with all her clothes on. ( TNG : " The Naked Now ")

The sonic showers on Deep Space 9 sometimes malfunctioned. Rom and Leeta 's broke down in early 2374 and Ezri Dax 's needed to be repaired in late 2375 . ( DS9 : " Favor the Bold ", " Extreme Measures ") Miles O'Brien was going to fix the latter until he became embroiled in an elaborate search – which he and Julian Bashir carried out – for a cure for a morphogenic virus . ( DS9 : " Extreme Measures ")

In 2376 , Seven of Nine canceled a singing lesson with Neelix because she felt that his vocal cords were incapable of producing basic diatonic tones and he had other rhythmic shortcomings. Neelix complained that he sounded good in the sonic shower, and Seven suggested he confine his efforts to that location. ( VOY : " Pathfinder ")

Captain Archer's NX-01 Enterprise had regular showers that used water, but when did starships start using sonic showers in Star Trek?

• Star Trek: Enterprise season 1, episode 5 features Captain Archer taking a regular shower, revealing that sonic showers weren't invented yet.
• Sonic showers were eventually introduced in later Star Trek series, including Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds.
• Some Star Trek ships, like the USS Enterprise-E, have both water and sonic showers available, but sonic showers have their drawbacks such as not being able to remove cheese from fur.

Star Trek: Enterprise season 1, episode 5 opens with an unusual sight: Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) taking a regular shower, meaning sonic showers weren't equipped on the 22nd century NX-01 Enterprise. As a prequel to the rest of Star Trek, one of Enterprise' s mission statements was to be more low-tech and analog than the later Star Trek series as well as show how some famous technology originated.

On Enterprise , for example, Starfleet Officers were armed with phase pistols, not phasers, and the NX-01 Enterprise used grapplers because it lacked a tractor-beam. However, bathrooms and toilets were never seen on Star Trek: The Original Series or Star Trek: The Next Generation , although they did exist on the Starship Enterprise. Starfleet Officers did regularly discuss bathing in the various Star Trek series, and they often spoke of sonic showers, technology that used pulse vibrations instead of water for bathing. Sonic showers were finally seen in Star Trek: Lower Decks , where the USS Cerritos' junior officers use communal sonic showers, and on the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2.

Enterprise’s Water Showers Vs. Star Trek’s Sonic Showers

In Star Trek: Enterprise season 1, episode 5, "Unexpected," Captain Archer is taking a regular shower when the NX-01 Enterprise's gravity goes awry. Archer ends up floating along with the water he's surrounded by until the gravity is restored, and the Captain is unceremoniously dumped back into his shower soaking wet. Intended comedy aside, this was a novel moment of Star Trek actually depicting a character bathing, and using water in the shower, no less. This established that sonic showers weren't invented yet in the 22nd century and the NX-01 Enterprise, lacking replicator technology, carried a supply of water aboard for drinking and hygienic use.

At some point between the 22nd and 23rd centuries, sonic showers were invented and installed on the USS Enterprise. In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 8 , "Under the Cloak of War," Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) enters his sonic shower and sets the vibrations to level 4. The Enterprise of the mid-23rd century has clearly switched to pulse vibration technology. In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) from an alternate timeline remarked how much he enjoyed taking a shower with water when he and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) stayed in a 21st century Toronto hotel, indicating that bathing with water was a new experience for Kirk.

Some Star Trek Ships Use Both Water & Sonic Showers

However, Star Trek: Insurrection established that the USS Enterprise-E also came with ways to bathe with water along with sonic shower technology. When their romance was sparked by the rejuvenating energies of the Briar Patch, Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) took a bubble bath together. This means one of their quarters came equipped with a bathtub that used regular water for bathing. Of course, it's also possible the tub and the water were replicated, or that Riker and Troi were getting amorous on the holodeck.

Sonic showers may allow starships to conserve water but they have their drawbacks. On Star Trek: Lower Decks , Dr. T'Ana (Gillian Vigman), a cat-like Caitian, complained that sonic showers couldn't remove cheese from her fur. On Star Trek: Voyager, the acoustic inverter of Captain Kathryn Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) sonic shower once malfunctioned and caused her glass mirror to shatter. Malfunctioning sonic showers also occasionally plagued the eponymous space station of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In the later Star Trek generations, sonic showers are simply de rigueur just as bathing with water is on Star Trek: Enterprise , but people seem to enjoy using regular showers whenever they get the chance.

In Star Trek, we saw both water showers, as well as sonic showers. Sonic showers were used from TNG onward, if I am correct, but at the same time I must think, did any ships have water showers equipped? Think about it. In Voyager, Neelix took a water bath. This would suggest that a water shower might be available to those who want it. Anybody agree, or have any information?

Starfleet showers have three settings: sonic, water and chocolate.

I don't know why they even bothered with sonic showers, since it would obviously be easy to replicate water.  

Maybe because it is quicker to get in and out. No need to dry and what not.

In Trek TOS, we never saw anybody take a bath or a shower. Or use a toilet. Except for the dead guy on planet Psi 2000 who was taking a shower fully clothed.

It's probably easier to put the sonic generator unit into an enclosed space like crew quarters. I don't think replicating water would be an option, because it would probably use more energy than a sonic. Plus the water would still have to come from somewhere - replication doesn't create things out of nothing. Although regarding sonic showers, I still keep wondering how they would actually work. I can see how high frequency waves would physically get the dirt off you, but do they actually get you CLEAN? Do they take care of the sweat and the stink? I just don't see how they could do that. I'm sure it actually feels much better to take a water shower than a sonic one.

It seems to be a somewhat limited commodity, several water basins, but very few "copious" applications. Seemed that rank had it's privileges as well.

The sonic shower is "futuristic". That's why it's there, which is fine with me. I also think a small amount of water would probably be necessary after whatever it shakes off of you falls to the bottom. Running water of some kind is a necessity in the quarters, beyond what you get when you order a beverage out of the replicator. I also think a sonic toilet would be even more implausible than a shower. Maybe a sonic bidet. Doesn't sound appealing. And how exactly is laundry processed?

I do think the analogy the producers might have had in mind would be something like wet shave vs. electric shave. Did they think back in the 1960's or 1970's that by the year 2000 most men would be using electric shavers exclusively? In this case and knowing what we do know today sonic showers might just be an option (one that Deltans possibly prefer ). For TOS the problem is rather this: The Season One crew quarter studio set had a side door possibly leading to another adjacent room (i.e. WC and shower, except for the cut scene from "The Corbomite Maneuver" where this door was part of Kirk's closet). By Season Two they often had a corridor at this location, except for "Elaan of Troyius" (and "Mirror, Mirror"). So unless you want to see the captain take a shower with his crewmen, the turntable cubicle in the quarters would not only hold the mirror shelf and the drawers but possibly a WC and some kind of shower (darn, whatever happened to McCoy's "rank hath its privileges"... ) Bob

We really have no idea what sonic shower is or how it works. For all we know, showers in the future have the option of adding sonication, just like showers today have the option of adding hot water; few people would choose to ignore the hot water setting now that it has become available, and virtually nobody would choose to disconnect his shower from the hot water system even if preferring cold showers. But even a sonic shower would be a water-based device fundamentally. Or some other suitable solvent, at any rate. The one "unrealistic" aspect here would be people calling their showers "sonic showers" when nobody in his right mind would call his shower "hot water shower" let alone "tapwater shower" today. The extra word is unnecessary and uncommon usage. But who does call the device "sonic shower"? It's a DS9/VOY thing exclusively. Perhaps Terok Nor did not have a sonication option installed originally, so showers with this otherwise commonplace feature retrofitted by Starfleet are specifically savored. Ditto for the shot-to-hell Voyager which might have suffered loss of sonication systems, forcing most people to subsist on old-fashioned water-only showers, and Torres (the only one to use the term, really) would be rubbing it in that being a skilled engineer carries fringe benefits. The one TNG exception is "The Game", where Starfleet Academy at Earth is credited with sonic showers - and they can be programmed to spew mud! Also, we know from "Body and Soul" that sonic showers come in hot and cold varieties. Timo Saloniemi

I don´t think a sonic shower is realistic at all. The sound pressure needed to remove anything that sticks to your skin would be pretty great and if not unhealthy then at least unpleasant.
