Introducing a Fully Functional Star Trek Tricorder

Beaming in the Wand Company's latest Trek replica.

Designed to work just like the fantasy version imagineered in the 1960s, with more than a little help from some 21st century technology, a full-colour LCD displays information stored in the Tricorder along with dynamic data gathered by its sensors and audio recording function.

With a target retail price of $250 USD, Star Trek fans can now look forward to measuring the environment, scanning radio frequencies, recording audio, impressing their friends, and enjoying the fact that they’ll own perhaps the most sophisticated prop replica ever designed and manufactured. The Tricorder will be available in summer 2021 directly from The Wand Company Shop, the official Star Trek Shop, and other selected terrestrial retailers. If fans want to be the first to hear about product updates and pre-order availability, they should register their interest The Wand Company's online store .

A Star Trek: Voyager Fan Built a Replica Tricorder That's Better Than Any Prop Hollywood Has Ever Made

The original folding phone brought to life through some impressive engineering and design..

Despite the show’s finale airing almost 20 years ag, o the technology in Star Trek: Voyager (and even TNG ) still looks convincingly futuristic, and we’d happily trade our folding smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Surface Duo 2 for this incredible recreation of one of Voyager’s tricorders.

Producing a sci-fi TV series based on one of the most beloved franchises of all time isn’t cheap. You not only have to build standing sets recreating the interior of a giant starship, there’s also alien worlds to construct, loads of special effects, and mountains of futuristic props for the cast to interact with. According to Hackaday , For Star Trek: Voyager , the second follow-up to the wildly successful Star Trek: The Next Generation, there were plans to introduce an updated design for the ubiquitous tricorder—a futuristic PDA that can do almost anything a script requires of it—but concept sketches were replaced with hand-me-down props from TNG to keep costs down.

At least one Star Trek: Voyager fan felt that was a great injustice, but instead of voicing their concerns during a Q&A session at a Star Trek convention, they set out to build the Voyager Tricorder, as they call it, in real life. The first version that YouTuber Mangy_Dog (a UI designer who’s also skilled at electronics) took over a year to build was impressively capable and looked straight out of the 24th century. But when a friend commissioned a replica of the tricorder for themselves, Mangy_Dog took the opportunity to thoroughly update the prop inside and out, and while it took several years to complete, the results look even better than anything Hollywood has ever delivered.

Mangy_Dog has delved into the design and engineering process behind the Voyager Tricord V2 build in three videos. The first video goes into some of the challenges of the hardware itself, including custom PCBs and problems with sourcing high-quality displays, while the second video delves into the custom user interface and animations created for the prop, which are all generated and rendered on the fly, instead of just being pre-rendered videos played back on queue. The third video goes much deeper into the internal hardware including the custom PCB created for the project and the extensive code that powers it.

In addition to LCD displays displaying what appear to be Starfleet standard user interfaces, the Voyager Tricorder V2 includes countless touch-sensitive buttons used to switch modes or activate secret features after a long press. There’s also blinking, flashing, and pulsing LEDs all over the device, making it look like the tricorder is actually scanning and interacting with its environment, when in reality the only thing this replica tricorder can actually do is make other Star Trek fans incredibly envious.

CBS Announces Functional Tricorder Replica For 2021

star trek tricorder replica

It’s taken 54 years, but soon, you’ll finally be able to buy a fully-functional version of the tricorder from Star Trek . Announced on the official website for the legendary sci-fi franchise , the replica will be built by The Wand Company, who’ve previously produced a number of high-quality official Star Trek props as well as replicas for Doctor Who and the Fallout game series.

Admittedly, we’re not sure what a “fully-functional tricorder” actually is, mainly because the various on-screen functions of the device were largely driven by whatever bind Kirk and Spock managed to find themselves in that week. But the announcement mentions the ability to scan radio frequencies, pull in dynamic data from environmental sensors, and record audio. The teaser video after the break doesn’t give us any more concrete information than the announcement, but it does seem to confirm that we’ll be viewing said data on the device’s iconic flip-up display.

Now as the regular Hackaday reader knows, fans have been building extremely impressive “functional” tricorders for some time now . Unlike the sleek 24th century versions seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation , the original tricorder prop was rather clunky and offers plenty of internal volume for modern goodies. Cramming a Raspberry Pi, LCD, and a bunch of sensors into an inert replica is a relatively approachable project. So it will be interesting to see how the official version stacks up to what’s already been done by intrepid hackers and makers.

The official tricorder won’t be available until summer of 2021, but you can sign up to be notified when it’s your turn to beam one up . While the $250 USD sticker price might keep the more casual Trekkers at bay, it’s actually a bit cheaper than we would have assumed given the amount of time and money we’ve seen fans put into their own builds.

[Thanks to NeoTechni for the tip.]

Hmmm, I mean, couldn’t the tricorder also pull in medical data, or was that just the medical variant? I don’t think we’ve quite reached the 24th century in terms of being able to wave a wand at someone and get all their medical details.

http://blog.readydock.net/bid/393258/5-medical-tablets-for-your-healthcare-clinic

“The tablet allows doctors to access patient information from anywhere, making it easier to discuss with patients their health status.”

“The tablet allows doctors to access patient information from anywhere, making it easier to discuss with patients their health status.”

“The tablet allows doctors to access the phone book from anywhere, making it easier to discuss with patients their health status.”

Sirriusly Dude? The tablet doesn’t get data from the patient in real time, it grabs it from a database. Ed Asner is not impressed.

Yes, technically that would be considered a medical tricorder which had additional hardware and wand in the bottom “expansion bay” for scanning humans. This is presumably meant to be a geological tricorder, which was used by the away team for scanning the environment when they beamed down.

“which was used by the away team”

Nope. The folks who used the type of tricorder shown in the pictures would have used the term “landing party.”

And probably would have unofficially called themselves “Alien Monster of the Week Bait,” except for main characters.

Duude … sorry to see that red shirt on you.

There was a distinct difference as mentinoed by the EMH in Voyager’s opening season when activated and asking for a tricorder, being handed one and thusly admonishing the ensign because it wasn’t a medical tricorder.

“Thusly” is not a word, dude. It’s like saying “slowlyly”, What the heck is wrong with people?

“The Oxford English Dictionary records thusly as a colloquial form of thus, with an earliest citation of 1865. ”

citation given…

Slowlyly describes not an object’s speed but it’s rate of acceleration. It is accelerating slowly.

Similarly slowlylyly describes an object whose rate of acceleration is slowly accelerating.

I hope that now you can figure out what slowlylylyly means.

Didn’t you ever take Calculus?

not to jerk you around to much, but what a janky comment.

” But the announcement mentions the ability to scan radio frequencies, pull in dynamic data from environmental sensors, and record audio.”

So… less than the cell phone already in my pocket. The future is now and it far exceeds the imagination of yesteryear.

Can you please provide the details on the DNA scanning mechanism in your telephone and tell us how it exceeds the capabilities of the Star Trek tricorder which can detect pathogens in a patient’s blood? Maybe you can tell us where you bought your DNA scanning phone?

I suspect a misunderstanding. I was comparing the announced replica’s functionality to my cell phone – not the on-screen device that had capabilities that varied with plot.

Yes. Before you can have a “real” tricorder, you have to define it. I can’t say I got much detail from the show, it always seemed vaguely, except when needed for a plot point. I have no idea what three things it records, or whefe the name came c om.

Maybe the Star Trek technical manual.has details, but it came after the series, and given that the schematic in there for the communicator is for a cheap 27MHz walkie talkie, you can’t rely on it for details.

Who knows if “Tricorder” even means anything, maybe it was a brand name a hundred years ago for some earlier version that really did have only three sensors.

I think a GCMS, ultra high sensitivity magnetometer, thermal camera, and Raman spectrometer, plus an audio and RF spectrum analyzer and a Walabot style through the walls radar could do a good portion of the stuff the onscreen one does, if you could somehow fit it all in a handheld.

I would also like to see the molecular scanner in your phone, the one in the Star Trek tricorder can determine percentage mineral content in ore samples without any physical contact.

I saw an episode of Time Team where a dude had a widget a bit like that, determined metal content of a lump of slag by holding it to it. Forgotten what method it used though, maybe X-ray backscattering, unsure. I think it was the episode where they were doing industrial archaeology of a buried valley in Wales.

X Ray fluorescent analyzer I think

Quite likely it was what’s known as an “XRF Gun”, where the XRF stands for “x-ray fluorescence”. It uses an x-ray emitter to get the atoms in a sample riled up until they kick out x-rays of their own, then looks at the properties of the re-emitted (fluorescent) x-rays to figure out what sort of atoms they were.

I think backscatter refers specifically to reflected x-rays, so XRF is not backscatter, but it’s similar in the sense that the relevant x-rays are coming back at you.

Disappointingly, XRF guns usually look a lot more like handheld barcode scanners (like the ones used by store cashiers) than tricorders.

Tried dotting around through that episode a bit, I’m not seeing it on the preview thumbnails, wondering if it was the copper refinery episode.

In the “Edith Keeler” episode, Spock attaches a television to his tricorder but your phone is lacking any HDMI or even NTSC video output.

Not true, your phone almost certainly has an HDMI output, you just need the right cable to access it.

not if its from Samsung. at least none of the pre-USBc ones (I think) supported MHL https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-Definition_Link

ooops, mixed up MHL and MyDP *doh*

Yes, you need an adapter from MHL to HDMI. Unfortunately the adapter from the Galaxy S2 did not work for the Galaxy S5.

Spock did NOT attach a TV to his tricorder in “City on the Edge of Forever.”

The tricorder has a display, and he used it.

Spock built an external memory system so that he could slow down playback of the very quickly moving scenes recorded as Mccoy jumped through the “Guardian of Forever” gate. Spock needed to find the exact moment into which Mccoy jumped.

That would have been great to see him build a televisor and connect it to that. The giant spinning wheel would have really added something to the “out of placeness” of their tabletop workshop while still being believably constructed from period available parts. They would have just had to write into the script that the original display did not survive the trip or something. Maybe it was cracked when they stepped into the street not understanding to watch for cars.

Actually getting enough resolution that way to be useful though would be pure sci-fi.

In the “Trouble with Tribbles” episode, McCoy points a tricorder at a tribble and can see that it is pregnant and that it is malnourished, again please provide the details of the sensors in your phone that provide this functionality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVV5eV76SDM

You provide the (pregnant) Tribble, they’ll provide the sensors?

there’s a tricorder and a medical one dipshit, the medical one has the wand, does your phone have a biological scanning wand? case closed drop it already

LOL, is that language fit for star fleet?

Surely long before there was a tricorder, there was a bicorder and a monocorder. Maybe CBS should start selling monocorders.

But I’ve already got a quadcorder, it measures capacitance, inductance, resistance annnnd transistance.

Yes, but the first one was the clavicorder :-P

Ok X, you’ve proved yourself to be an ardent “Trek” fan. But, you’re wrong about how Spock used his tricorder in “The City On The Edge Of Forever”. He didn’t “attach a television to his tricorder”. He used the circuitry he built to enable viewing The Guardian’s data on the tricorder’s built-in screen. Now, let it go.

I hope the people who sell this replica provide some advice on the proper way to hold the thing.

… and how to deal with obnoxious Star Trek fans (dismissing/dissing the device). ;-)

There was the Moonblink Tricorder app for Android, using an LCARS style interface. It could display data from whatever sensors were in the phone. Upon finding out about it CBS decided to be stupid and told the guy who was working on it to stop, when they should’ve offered to hire him to continue development of it as “The Official Star Trek Tricorder App”. Last version was 5.12 Hit the download link here. It’ll say it’s 404 but you’ll still get the APK file https://web.archive.org/web/20121121054305/http://www.freeware4android.net/motorola-defy-device-1660/gps-tag/tricorder-get-11974.html

Since then there are medical apps that can use a phone’s camera and flash LED to measure pulse and blood oxygen levels, same principle as any optical pulse oximeter. Somehow they can also measure blood pressure in a fingertip using the LED and camera and do it quite accurately. I’ve compared to a conventional sphygmomanometer and the phone app results are usually quite close.

Non-contact methods of pulse oximetry and blood pressure reading are in development https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4574660/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31946011/

So a device an EMT can just point at a person and get readings good enough to tell if the person has something non-obviously critical going on is going to be coming along pretty soon.

> Somehow they can also measure blood pressure in a fingertip using the LED and camera and do it quite accurately.

One of those claims is true.

>I’ve compared to a conventional sphygmomanometer and the phone app results are usually quite close.

The optical system measures the volume change of the veins by measuring the light reflectance. The volume change is proportional to the difference between diastolic and systolic pressure, but the sensor has no way of knowing the absolute pressure because the DC offset of the signal varies. By making some educated guesses, like guessing that your diastolic pressure is somewhere between 60 – 90 mmhg, it usually gets it somewhere close.

My cheap smartwatch for example gives a higher reading when my hand is pointing up than down, because the blood drains away from the veins by gravity and that increases the signal amplitude. It’s still guessing that the diastolic pressure is in the normal range, so it starts to claim that I have high systolic pressure. When I hang my arm low, the veins fill up with blood and the difference in volume gets less, so the watch reports normal blood pressure. It’s been calibrated that way.

I just took some measurements as described. Hand up 149/79. Hand down 121/74. Hand horizontal and watch face level jumps between 120/74 and 141/84

That’s because the watch is trying to compensate using its accelerometer to switch between different calibrations. When my hand is on the table, a slight tilt of the wrist makes the watch think I’m holding my hand up or down, therefore whether I have normal blood pressure or whether I should see a doctor. This is why it says on the box “Not medical grade.”

The better systems use additional data, like a chest strap, to measure the difference in time it takes for the pulse to reach your wrist. This gives an overall resistance to flow, which can help fix the relative change in volume to an absolute blood pressure.

Invalid. If you want to have a pretense of being scientific about it, you have to get someone else to hold your arm up. Tensed muscles raise your blood pressure.

The red shirt stood for Volunteer right?

Like what Target employees wear?

Like what Canadian Target employees wore.

I wonder what it would take to implement the tricorder function that indicated “2 large life forms at 100 meters are heading this way Captain.”

Is it thermal? Is it Van Ecking their neural functions? Are they upwind and it’s an exhaled CO2 detector? Is it the bedbug on a microphone the US was reported to use in Vietnam?

Well there’s the biological version… https://gizmodo.com/the-forgotten-era-why-bed-bugs-were-tested-for-combat-1699513754 and the technological version… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_sniffer

And a by the way, I’m tossing around ideas, ways to approach, promising avenues for implementation of ; ultrasonic critter detectors from ultrasonic noise emitted when stepping on grass, sand, moving through brush etc.. (Windy days probably blind you though) In theory, sensitive detectors, stereo separation, triangulation, done, but a whole lot of banging your head against sensitivity vs noise, signal processing and signal recognition in the middle.

Spectral slope of critters is likely to differ from wind noise. Detection might also be amenable to wavelet transform methods.

I love Star Trek, but it does irritate that their “life signs” only ever seems to mean animals. Sometimes it only means intelligent animals. As though they’re detecting “THINK-RAYS” or something.

Human brains have higher neurological activity than chimp brains, so yeah, think ray intensity is plausible method of telling how potentially smart something is. Any electrical activity is sending out tiny pulses of RF, so just because we haven’t made high enough definition sensor arrays to sort them out yet, doesn’t mean they’re not there.

Maybe due to convergence of biomimetics, metamaterials, nanotech, and gene splicing, we’ll grow a sharks head on a stick and wave it over patients like a techno-shaman … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampullae_of_Lorenzini

Backscatter of WiFi signals? Think I saw that on HAD over a yet ago.

I could probably spend all day thinking of different kinds of sensors that one could throw into a box with a RasPi and call it a tricorder. It would make a great project that would be appreciated by the average HaD reader. I can’t imagine what this could possibly be though.

So, it scans RF? Is it a general purpose SDR in a box marketed by a mainstream television broadcaster? Maybe in an alternate reality that is much geekier than this one.

I imagine running to the door to snatch it from the delivery person, racing to the bathroom to get a moment of privacy, Ignoring the desperate please of a family member who needs to pee. Turning the shiny new machine on and being greeted with nothing but the display blinking B̶e̶ ̶s̶u̶r̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶d̶r̶i̶n̶k̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶O̶v̶a̶l̶t̶i̶n̶e̶ Be sure to subscribe to CBS.

Thank you Jean Shepherd!

Heh, okay Ralphie… I did read the linked site and for 3/4 of the way through I thought “functional” really meant it was just going to have the same random flashy lights, but since they mentioned sensors etc, it does look like it might do a bit more than that.

I’m confused, this is a top of the line replica, REPLICA of the Star Trek tri-Corder, why are you all comparing it to a real medical device, it’s just a toy, with that off my chest, I’m so excited to order one , I have the phaser and communicator (which is B.A. ) and I can’t wait for this to be available, a big thank you to the techs at the wand co. For the amazing props they produce.

Anybody notice that the Wand Company Tricorder is still not released, almost three years after the initial announcement? This product may never see the light of day.

They’re probably having problems putting the design into a product.

On its official site, The Wand Company also offered up an early set of answers to expected fan questions about this new product, which is targeted for a $250 USD price point when it goes on sale later this year.

When will the Tricorder be available? The Tricorder Replica is currently in the final stages of development. Later in the year we will announce when the Tricorder will be available for pre-order. The Tricorder will be shipping to customers in Summer 2021. Pre-orders will open as a priority for fans who register their interest first.
Why are you announcing the Tricorder now if it is not shipping until next year? Since our Bluetooth® Communicator replica was announced in 2015, we have received an enormous number of messages from fans around the world asking us to complete the Landing Party set by making a Tricorder. We know Summer 2021 seems like a long time to wait, but we wanted Star Trek fans to be able to share in our excitement as soon as we were far enough along in our product development to give us the confidence that we would be able to recreate this iconic prop with the level of sophistication it demands.
How much will it cost? We’re aiming for a recommended retail price of $250 USD / £250 GBP. We appreciate this is expensive, and much more expensive than our Star Trek Bluetooth® Communicator and Phaser, but the Tricorder is the most complex product we’ve ever developed and, with its electronics, sensors and authentic materials, it’s a much more expensive product to make.
Is it an accurate replica? Yes. The Tricorder Replica has been developed after years of extensive research, and meticulously designed using 3D scans of the last-remaining screen-used hero prop. Carefully chosen materials and manufacturing processes, accurately matching the prop and its original design intent, ensure that it will be the perfect companion to our highly accurate Star Trek Phaser and Bluetooth® Communicator prop replicas, at last completing the Landing Party set.
How does it work? Our Tricorder is designed to work just like the fantasy version imagineered by The Original Series script writers in the 1960s, with more than a little help from some 21st century technology. A full-colour LCD displays information stored in the Tricorder along with dynamic data gathered by its sensors and audio recording function. More details of the functionality will be revealed later this year – register your interest on the form above to be kept updated.
What can I do with it? Measure the environment, scan radio frequencies, record audio, impress all your friends, enjoy seeing your dearest Star Trek wish come true and love the fact that you own perhaps the most sophisticated prop replica ever designed and manufactured.

So, collectors: do you plan to add The Wand Company’s newest Original Series replica to your collection? Sound off in the comments below!

‘Star Trek’ Fan Leaves Behind a Collection Like No One Has Done Before

When Troy Nelson died, his shelves were filled to the rafters with memorabilia from the popular franchise. Soon, the massive collection will be boldly going, going, gone.

Troy Nelson and his younger brother Andrew were almost inseparable.

The two youngest of six, they were born two years apart. They lived together in their childhood home in Bremerton, Wash., for more than half a century. Near their home, there is a park bench on which they carved their initials as young boys.

The Nelson brothers never married or had children. They worked together at the same senior home. They even once, as teenagers, dated the same girl at the same time while working different shifts at the same pizza shop. This lasted a week until they realized it.

“Two parts of one body,” Evan Browne, their older sister, said of their relationship in an interview.

On Feb. 28, Andrew Nelson, who had been treated for cancer for years, went to feed the chickens and ducks that were gifts from Ms. Browne to her brothers. He had a heart attack and died. He was 55. Just hours later, Troy Nelson, who was stricken with grief, took his own life. He was 57.

“He had talked about it before,” Browne, 66, said, tearfully. “He said, ‘Hey, if Andrew goes, I’m out of here. I’m checking out.’ Andrew would say the same thing, and then it really happened .”

Figurines of various characters in the Star Trek series stand on shelves. A statuette of Captain Kirk is among those on the top shelf.

What Troy Nelson left behind has become a sensation. After his death, family members posted pictures on social media of his massive — and, really, the keyword is massive — collection of “Star Trek” memorabilia, which have now been shared thousands of times.

The items took up two living rooms and a bedroom, all lined with bookshelves, according to Elena Hamel, one of the brothers’ nieces. The centers of the rooms were lined with additional bookshelves — all packed to the brim — to create aisles. There were jewelry cabinets serving as display cases.

The shelves contained action figures. Dolls. Models of ships. Posters. Ornaments. Lunchboxes. Legos. Several toy phasers and tricorders. (For non-Trek fans, the phaser is a weapon, and a tricorder is, essentially, a fancy smartphone.) Multiple “Star Trek” lamps. (Yes, there are “Star Trek” lamps.) Trading cards. Comic books. Trek-themed Geeki Tikis (stylized tiki mugs). Life-size cutouts of famous characters. A life-size captain’s chair.

While it’s impossible to account for every private collector in the world, Troy Nelson’s collection is almost assuredly among the largest — if not the largest.

The last additions to the collection came in the final weeks of his life: Stuffed rabbits in “Star Trek” uniforms. “I’ve never seen a collection that size,” said Russ Haslage, the president of the International Federation of Trekkers , a “Star Trek”-themed nonprofit that Haslage founded with Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the franchise.

Haslage’s organization opened in 2020 a “Star Trek” museum in Sandusky, Ohio, that has received donations of memorabilia from estates. Those collections “pale in comparison” to Mr. Nelson’s, he said. (Haslage has reached out to the family to ask about donations from the collection.)

The older brother’s love of “Star Trek” began with the original series, which he’d watch with his siblings.

“It was our dinner meal,” Ms. Browne said. “When we had dinner, we were sitting in front of ‘Star Trek.’”

Troy Nelson began collecting in the late-1970s. His first acquisition was a model version of the Starship Enterprise. Then came Star Trek conventions. Why the franchise was such a draw to him remains a mystery to his family.

“I really can’t say. I mean, other than the fact that he was brainwashed with it at dinner time,” Browne said, laughing. “That sounds ridiculous. When we grew up, it’s like, ‘Dinner is at this time. And if you don’t get here at this time, you don’t get dinner.’ So it might’ve been a comfort for him .”

Troy Nelson would often monitor sites like eBay for items he didn’t have. On several occasions, he would express frustration on losing out on an item before being able to bid on it. Until he found out the reason.

“Andrew already got it for him,” Ms. Browne recalled.

Obsessive “Star Trek” fandom has long become an indelible part of pop culture, especially as the franchise — which has spawned several television series, movies, novels and comics — has been a long-running institution. There have been documentaries that have studied the subject, such as “Trekkies” in 1997. It’s been lampooned on “The Simpsons,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Family Guy,” and become a story line in an episode of “The West Wing,” among many others. For dedicated fans, accruing collectibles isn’t uncommon.

“When you collect these things, you’re closer to that genre that you enjoy so much,” Haslage said. “When I first started in 1979, I was grabbing everything I could get my hands on because it was cool, and it was a piece of the whole ‘Star Trek’ mythos. If you have these pieces, you’re a part of that universe in some way.”

It turns out that collecting is a pursuit that runs in the family.

Andrew Nelson collected mall swords, Ryobi-branded tools and statues of warrior women, like Xena, the warrior princess .

Browne’s house has a wall with thousands of smashed pennies and her living room windows are full of glass sugar and creamer bowls.

Browne’s father, Bud Peers, collected salt and pepper shakers, guns and knives. Troy and Andrew’s father, Norman Nelson, collected scrap metal and wood.

Hamel has 17 Christmas trees, all fully decorated with separate themes.

Browne’s son, Michael, who is 36, collects anything and everything related to black bears.

“ When you have a large collection like that and it’s displayed like that,” Hamel said, “and it’s something that is important to you, it’s often really calming to be in a space like that. It’s just all the things that you love. It’s soothing.”

As far as Browne knew, Troy had no history of mental illness or any previous suicide attempts. After Andrew died, she received a distraught and frantic call from Troy with the news. She told him that she was on her way.

Ms. Browne said she called him when she got to the Tacoma Bridge. No answer. And then again, at the Manette Bridge. No answer. When she reached their home, the back door was open. And then she found him. The phone call was the last time they spoke.

Troy Nelson did not leave a note, but did leave some things meticulously arranged by his computer, including a key to the house, burial plans for the two brothers, and bills.

“ I don’t know really what I thought,” Ms. Browne said. “All I could do was just scream.”

The Nelson family is boxing up Andrew’s “Star Trek” collection to prepare it for auction. His ashes will be placed in an urn carved in the likeness of the supermodel Bettie Page . (He was a fan). Troy’s ashes will be placed in a “Star Trek” lunchbox.
