Our adventure begins with a departure from Tucson, crossing into Mexico at Nogales. After a brief stop in Santa Ana for a local lunch, we journey to Hermosillo to admire the Cathedral and the Government Palace’s historic murals. The day ends with an arrival at San Carlos Bay, where we’ll check into the Marinaterra Resort. A “Welcome to Mexico” reception and dinner hosted by your Tour Director will round off the evening, setting the tone for the exciting journey ahead.

Day 3 – San Carlos

After a relaxed breakfast, we then set sail on a private boat for a scenic cruise along the breathtaking Sea of Cortez . Keep your cameras ready and eyes peeled for playful dolphins, graceful seals, and, if we’re lucky, majestic whales. The sea also plays host to exotic birds like the blue-footed booby and the great blue heron, offering a perfect opportunity for birdwatchers.

After our sea voyage, we’ll head to a renowned scenic lookout, acclaimed by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10, offering panoramic views that promise to be a highlight of your trip. We return to the hotel for a poolside lunch, allowing some time to unwind, soak up the sun, or explore the Marina shops at your leisure.

The day culminates with a departure for a special seaside sunset dinner, where you’ll dine with the backdrop of the setting sun painting the sky, rounding off a day filled with natural wonders and relaxation.

Day 4 – Alamos

We depart San Carlos after breakfast. Our first stop will be at the Guaymas Pearl farm , the first cultured pearl farm in the Americas, here you will learn about the pearl oyster farming, pearl grading and quality selection. Next, we travel south through the rich grain farm lands and to the foothills of the Sierra Madre arriving at the quaint city of Alamos. A living museum, the city cobblestones streets are lined with beautiful Spanish Colonial Mansions. This evening immerse yourself in the local culture at dinner with a colorful spectacle of music and folk dancing by performers in traditional customs.

Day 5 – El Fuerte

After breakfast, immerse yourself in the rich history of Alamos with a guided walking tour. Wander through quaint cobblestone streets and marvel at the grandeur of fabled mansions, meticulously restored to their original splendor. Alamos, a city honored as a national historic landmark, offers a glimpse into Mexico’s illustrious past and architectural beauty.

Lunch will be served at the hotel. In the early afternoon, we’ll depart for El Fuerte. Upon arrival, check into the Hotel Torres del Fuerte, a charming retreat known for its warmth and hospitality. The evening promises a delightful dinner accompanied by great entertainment at the hotel, ensuring a memorable end to a day filled with exploration and cultural enrichment.

Day 6 – Posada Barrancas

The day starts early as we transfer to the train station, boarding the train at 8:00 a.m. for what is heralded as North America’s most spectacular train ride. Prepare to be mesmerized by breathtaking landscapes and engineering marvels as the train winds through majestic mountains and deep canyons.

Enjoy lunch onboard as you take in the panoramic views. By mid-afternoon, we’ll arrive at Posada Barrancas, where the awe-inspiring vistas continue to unfold. You’ll be staying at the Hotel Mirador, renowned for its stunning views that capture the essence of the surrounding beauty.

The evening brings a cultural immersion with a Tarahumara Indians culture presentation. Learn about the rich traditions, customs, and way of life of the Tarahumara people, adding a profound layer of understanding to your travel experience.

Day 7 – Posada Barrancas

Today is dedicated to exploring the cultural and natural wonders of Copper Canyon . Begin the day by diving into the world of Tarahumara Indian arts and crafts, gaining insight into their skilled craftsmanship and vibrant cultural expressions, supplemental to what you learned the evening before.

A visit to the canyon’s rim awaits, offering breathtaking views and a moment to connect with the natural majesty of the area. The highlight of the day is the opportunity to board the Copper Canyon aerial tramway. This remarkable journey allows you to descend into the canyon, providing unparalleled views and a unique perspective of this geological marvel.

The day also offers flexibility for optional activities tailored to your interests. Embark on a hiking adventure to explore the rugged terrain, opt for a horseback ride to see the landscape from a different vantage point, or simply relax and soak in the serene beauty of your surroundings.

Day 8 – Posada Barrancas to Chihuahua

After enjoying breakfast, we board our motorcoach for a scenic transfer to Creel, taking in the stunning vistas of Oteros Canyon along the way. The journey continues with a stop in Cuauhtemoc for lunch.

As we descend from the mountains, the landscape transforms before our eyes into the vast expanse of the Chihuahuan Desert, leading us to the city of Chihuahua , the state’s capital. Here, we embark on a tour of one of Mexico’s most historic city centers, where the echoes of a rich patriotic legacy resonate through the streets.

Our exploration includes visits to the Government Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral, each site a testament to Chihuahua’s significant role in Mexico’s history and culture. The day concludes with a dinner at a local restaurant, offering a chance to savor regional dishes.

Day 9 – Chihuahua to Casas Grande

We’ll start with breakfast before heading to Nuevo Casas Grandes to visit the ancient site of Paquimé , showcasing the Grand Chichimeca civilization’s architectural marvels. The evening features a Mata Ortiz pottery demonstration, highlighting local craftsmanship. Our journey culminates with a farewell dinner, celebrating the experiences and connections forged throughout our adventure.

Day 10 – Travel Home

Breakfast at the hotel and departure via motorcoach back to Albuquerque. We enjoy our last Mexican lunch before our official border crossing.

Meals included: (B, L)

Itinerary subject to change. **Passport Required!**

Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is home to over 900 varieties of fish and more than 2,000 species of marine invertebrates, making it one of the most diverse seas on the planet.

Tamahumara Indians

The Tarahumara are famous for their long-distance running ability, often covering distances of over 100 miles (160 kilometers) in their traditional foot races and hunting practices. They run in simple sandals known as "huaraches" made from recycled tires and leather.

Copper Canyon

Despite its name, Copper Canyon does not have significant deposits of copper. The name comes from the copper-green hue of the canyon walls, especially when seen in the light of the sunrise or sunset.

One of the highlights for visitors is the Copper Canyon Aerial Tramway (Teleférico Barrancas del Cobre), which offers one of the most dramatic views of the canyon. It's one of the longest and highest cable cars in the world, providing a unique perspective of the canyon's depth and grandeur.

Temperature: Daytime temperatures usually range from the mid-70s to high 80s Fahrenheit. Nights can be cooler, especially in elevated regions.

Rainfall: Although November marks the end of the rainy season, occasional showers and even some heavier rain events can still occur. However, the frequency of rain typically decreases as the month progresses.

Humidity: Humidity levels can still be relatively high in November, but it often feels less oppressive than during the peak rainy months.

Variability: As with any region, microclimates can mean that specific locations might experience different weather patterns. For instance, mountainous areas might be cooler and can have different rainfall patterns than coastal areas.

Clothing: It is always best to dress in layers for your comfort. Please wear shoes that are appropriate for walking on various terrains.

Always check a reliable weather forecast specific to the exact location you plan to visit in Southern Mexico to prepare appropriately.

Here Are The Best Times And Places To View Arizona’s Fall Foliage In 2024

Who's ready for fall and fall colors? Our friends at Smoky Mountains is going to help answer when do leaves change color in Arizona 2024.

If you live in Arizona and are over the summer heat like I am, fall is the most wonderful season of all! In fact, it's the most wonderful time of the year. As the intense heat dissipates, we can spend as much time outdoors as we want and, best of all, the leaves begin to change from their bright green to hues of crimson, orange, and gold. Each year, our friends at Smoky Mountains create a super helpful predictive map of when the leaves are likely to change color in your part of the state.

So, when do leaves change color in Arizona? Take a look at the following Arizona fall foliage map 2024 and you'll see!

Our first glimpses of fall will occur in some of the higher elevation areas like Yavapai and Pima Counties around mid-September and will hit their peak roughly a month later.

alt

Pictured here are Aspens in Prescott at the start of fall.

Imagine viewing fall foliage against the red rocks of Sedona (Yavapai County). Well, you can if you time your visit just right. Make sure you're here sometime around mid-to-late October.

alt

Also during mid-to-late October, you should plan on hiking the Aspen Trail Loop in Flagstaff. With the Aspens all in their golden glow, it will be like walking into a dream.

alt

By this time, Mohave and Coconino counties will start to see the leaves change. This will just be the beginning, so don't expect a full palette of fall colors in these areas quite yet.

alt

As time marches on, the fall colors spread. By early October, both Apache and Navajo counties will begin to see the leaves change. Peak fall foliage will occur by Halloween.

alt

Be sure to plan lots of fun during this time - by November, the rest of the state should reach peak fall foliage while the counties that started the season weeks earlier will be past their peak... then we can start getting excited about the upcoming holiday season!

alt

So, we hope this helps answer when do leaves change in Arizona. Make sure to visit the Smoky Mountains website for more.

What are your plans this fall in Arizona? How about a road trip around the state? Before you hit the open road to go leaf peeping this season, be sure to check out our road trip essentials packing list .

A Bit Of An Unexpected Natural Wonder, Few People Know There Are Wetlands Hiding In Arizona

Tres Rios Wetlands in Phoenix, Arizona, is a 700-acre restoration project that offers a lush habitat for diverse wildlife and plants, contrasting the typical desert landscape.

Wetlands in Arizona ? They do exist, and one of the most incredible among them is hiding in the Phoenix area. The Tres Rios Wetlands is a 700-acre restoration project that is making the Salt River wild again. You definitely won't feel like you're in Arizona anymore when you visit this amazing place.

While not entirely natural - the project is a restoration effort by the City of Phoenix and other local authorities - the 700-acre Tres Rios Wetlands aim to return the Salt River to the condition it was in during the 1800s, before Phoenix became a major urban area.

alt

The project creates a symbiotic relationship between the wetlands and the nearby wastewater treatment facility. Reclaimed water from the plant is pumped into the wetlands, and the plants and animals have their fill before the remainder is emptied into the river.

alt

Visitation to Tres Rios is by permit only. You can request a permit on the City of Phoenix website, and they are valid for six months and allow unlimited visits between sunrise and sunset daily.

alt

You won't believe your eyes when you see the types of vegetation that thrive here. From reeds to lily pads to tall grasses, it looks nothing like the desert landscape we're used to.

alt

Equally as incredible are all of the animals that call this lush destination home. You'll see more than 150 different species of birds, including the majestic bald eagle...

alt

...and the adorable barn owl. Other creatures that reside in the Tres Rios Wetlands include muskrats, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, bobcats, and beavers.

alt

This pristine natural habitat is the perfect place to go for a peaceful stroll or bike ride - and if you're an avid birder, don't leave those binoculars at home!

alt

For more information about the Tres Rios Wetlands , visit the City of Phoenix online.

Have you ever visited these incredible wetlands in Arizona? If so, we'd love to hear all about your experience in the comments! Don't forget to check out our previous article for a delicious ice cream shop where you can satisfy your sweet tooth after exploring the wetlands.

The Best Places to watch Sunrise and Sunset

The most beautiful sunsets occur in the Magic Valley, and nothing is more magical than seeing the sky light up in vibrant color. Mesmerizing moments occur when the sun sets over the Snake River Canyon, or when the hazy sky lights up red at the City of Rocks – time stops. We’ve listed these locations for you to create your own experiences with loved ones!  Check out our list of the best places to watch sunrise and sunset in Southern Idaho.

Shoshone Falls

sunset copper canyon island tour

This waterfall is located on the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls and is gorgeous for sunrise. The sun is behind the waterfall, and truly can be remarkable! Sunset is also pretty here because the sun aligns with the canyon and causes the entire waterfall to glow.

Perrine Bridge

sunset copper canyon island tour

There are two walking paths along the Perrine Bridge, so be on the east side when it’s sunrise, and west when it is sunset. Each morning as the sun rises the sun flares through the canyon walls. The water is still and usually a purply blue color. For sunset, the water glosses over, kayakers make their way back to docks, and BASE jumpers soar to the ground below. It is a gorgeous location to view either time of day.

Hansen Bridge

sunset copper canyon island tour

The Hansen bridge is 11 miles east of the Perrine Bridge and offers somewhat similar views into the Snake River Canyon. There are two pull-offs on either side of the bridge. They are easiest to access to the west, so we recommend sunset gazing here! The north west pull off is a local favorite. You can walk to a look out that looks right into the canyon, with a beautiful boulder area in view on the water. There is also a waterfall that lights up the side of the canyon.

Hagerman Valley

sunset copper canyon island tour

The perfect place to watch the sunset is from the top of Box Canyon. During the early summer the sun sets directly down the canyon, creating a gorgeous shine over the vibrant blue water.

Hagerman Fossil Beds

sunset copper canyon island tour

Giant wind turbines spread across gorgeous rolling hills. Below here sits the Hagerman Fossil Beds. All around is beautiful views for a perfect sunrise or sunset to light up the sky.  The Fossil Beds are spread out all along the Snake River near Hagerman so there are plenty of awesome places to catch sunset, including down by the water or up along the wind turbines!

Malad Gorge

sunset copper canyon island tour

Half way between Boise and Twin Falls is a giant canyon that cuts under the interstate. This is Malad Gorge! The State Park cost $5 to get in but walking all along the canyon will give you gorgeous views of the sun going down. Just a short walk away is another incredible canyon filled with blue water that also makes for a great sunset location. Camping is available here and there are public restrooms.

Mini Cassia

Mt harrison.

sunset copper canyon island tour

South of Burley lies mountains so beautiful the sky does a show for them almost every night. One of these mountain tops is Mount Harrison! The paved road leads all the way to its lookout making it extremely accessible for anyone. You can walk all around the area to see 360 views of Southern Idaho and Utah.

Lake Cleveland

sunset copper canyon island tour

Lake Cleveland is just below Mount Harrison and is a wonderful camping spot for locals and visitors. Kayak across the glassy water at dusk or cast some lines to fish. The water will reflect the gorgeous sky and honestly, you can’t get a better sunset location than on an alpine lake!

Under Chandelier of the Tent Roof Intercession Chapel

Under Chandelier of the Tent Roof Intercession Chapel

View from under the church chandelier on the ceiling interior of the main chapel of St. Basil's Cathedral , the Chapel of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, with a tent roof structure. This Chapel was one of the earliest architectural experiments that placed two octagons sharing a ribbed roof on top of a square. This started a whole new trend in architecture. However, a tall structure like this with a small base plate is very difficult to heat, and cannot be used by many people praying at the same time, which is one of the reasons why very few churches like this were ever built. Tented roofs are thought to have originated in the Russian North, as they prevented snow from piling up on wooden buildings during long winters. This roof style was widely used in 16th- and 17th-century Russian architecture for churches, although there are examples of this style also in other parts of Europe.

Photo #359 taken on July 16, 2016, during a tour of St. Basil's Cathedral with my dear clients from the USA, Andrew and Karen Green.
