telescopic fishing rod travel case

Choosing a travel rod for anglers who like to pack light and carry a fishing rod in their luggage on every where they travel requires a little planning and view of the options and fish you think you might encounter on your travels. We reviewed a wide gamut of rods and came up with a lot of options to consider as well as some great recommendations for which fishing rods we would suggest for a lot of different types of fishing and travel.

Things like size of the rod when disassembled, number of pieces, rod case, roll or bag, type of rod, how you will transport it, whether a telescoping rod makes sense and more need to be considered before choosing the best travel rod for your fishing plans.

Travel rods can come from 2 pieces up to 5 pieces not to mention the telescoping travel rod options out there. You might want to fit the rod in a suitcase, if so more pieces will break down into a smaller foot print. Or you might carry it with you which might give you more options for rods. You might want a hard case to protect the rod if you’re worried about TSA or some other party damaging your rods in transit. Or a rod wrap may suffice if it’s tucked inside of another hard case suitcase.

Know Your Travel Rods

Then there are the types of rod to consider including spinning travel rods, casting travel rods, telescoping travel rods as well as travel fly rods or specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or travel trout or panfish rods. Or any combination of the aforementioned.

If you plan to fish with light lures and light line, then a spinning travel rod might be the best option. If you plan to look for big bluegills or crappies specifically on your travels, then a long telescoping rod might make more sense or a small spinning rod like a trout rod might give you a lot of options for trout and panfish.

If you’re going for larger quarry, you will want a beefier rod that has a reel that can hold heavier line. Usually a baitcasting travel rod makes sense for bass, or big fish like walleye, pike, musky, stripers, etc.

Specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or extra long jigging rods might be just the ticket for probing unknown waters for specific types of fishing like jigging brush for crappie or casting oversized swimbaits for trophy bass and stripers.

Of course if you’re in to fly fishing, then a travel fly rod is hard to beat. There are some super high end and middle of the road options that are great rods that make a 9-foot fly rod fit into an over night travel bag with the travel fly rod option.

CONSIDER TELESCOPING RODS FOR TRAVEL

For some, a telescoping rod is an easy spur of the moment travel rod option to probe some nearby waters to see if they have fish available. I have buddies that keep telescoping rods in their trucks at all times and will break it out on their travels or while taking a lunch or after work on a work trip. It’s a quick and simple option.

Most of time telescoping rods are a bit lower quality. Or at least that was the case back when the only option was a low end push button spin cast combo for small panfish. There are, however, some newer options bringing this back as a real viable option for bass and panfish.

A Travel Combo Might Make More Sense

You can buy travel rods that are a rod and reel combo. This is often the case with telescoping options. But there are some better quality options in the multi-piece travel rods with a decent spinning reel. Most of the time. I want the best rod I can get and a good reel in my bag so I’m not fighting my equipment in the limited amount of time I get to fish on my travels. Especially those spur-of-the-moment unplanned fishing trips while traveling.

But when you get to a location and wished you had a rod and reel, a decent priced telescoping rod/reel combo can get you in the fish on an unexpected hot spot quickly and easily.

You Need a Travel Rod Case, Bag or Roll

Anymore your travel rod is going to come in a hard case, a roll or a bag. Regardless you need to take care to protect the pieces of the rod or the rod while it is compartmentalized so it’s not damaged in your travels.

A hard case might be a cloth case with a hard shell inside of it that zips closed on the end and the multiple pieces slide into little sleeves inside of it. Or it might be a hard outer shell with a soft interior that keeps your guides and blank parts protected. These are nice when you plan to carry your travel rods separate from your luggage. Or keep them in a vehicle on your travels.

A travel rod roll is just a cloth sleeve with individual pockets for each piece of the blank and then you roll it up with flap that closes on one end and tie it off with the attached ties. These can be nice for putting a rod or two into your other travel bags or a small compartment in your vehicle.

A travel bag can be just a cloth bag or a padded foam bag that houses and protects the rod simultaneously. I’m a fan of these as they keep your pieces from falling out as sometimes happens with rolls. And they keep the blank pieces with a bit of added protection. The padded bags are ideal in my opinion.

Best Travel Rod Brands

In the freshwater space, the best travel rod makers are often synonymous with the best rod makers. Makers like Daiwa, Shimano, St. Croix, Megabass, Ark Rods, Fenwick, and others have really solid travel rod options. Others that many don’t know offer travel rods have good options like Favorite, Bass Pro, and BnM Poles.

Here are the travel rod brands we reviewed and liked:

  • Favorite Fishing
  • B’n’M Poles

Having said all that, let’s take a closer look at some of our personal favorites in various travel rod categories.

Best Telescoping Travel Combo

Daiwa travel combo.

We chose the Daiwa Travel Combo as the best combo because it comes with a good reel, telescoping rod that is better than most and it’s own sling carry bag that is big enough to put several travel rods and reels in. This combo compacts down to 26 inches making it a perfect option for any trip whether it be in a car or a plane.

The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch Medium power fast action rod. It’s a solid rod and stayed extended as we fished with it. The reel is a 2-bearing Daiwa Crossfire LT 2500. Even though it’s only 2 bearings, it performed very smoothly and effortlessly with a very smooth drag. It’s a solid spinning combo and it’s offered in EVA or Cork grips.

The combo costs $149 but if you just want a good combo without messing around with pairing rods and reels, this is a quick easy choice.

Best Travel Rod for Bass

Shimano zodias travel rod.

The fact that Shimano took one of their best rod lines and converted it into a high-end bass travel rod got me excited. And when I got the new rod in my hand, I was very impressed. I am a big fan of the original Zodias line and was so excited to see this level of quality in a 5-piece travel rod.

This travel rod condenses down to 19 inches when packed, meaning you can literally take it anywhere. And when full assembled you have a very high quality rod full of all the features of the high end one-piece blanks. The 5-piece construction gives the rod more uniform bend than a 2-piece model would.

It has so much power and a steady consistent load when casting. You will forget it’s a travel rod by your second cast. It’s a high end rod that just happens to be in 5 pieces. It has a CI4+ reel seat for lightweight strength and a full carbon monocoque grip which eliminates the use of EVA giving a light rod more sensitivity.

Hi-Power X construction which makes the blanks outermost layer wrapped with carbon tape form that X appearance on the blank that gives more precise actions to the rods with more strength.

You can really lean into fish with this rod without worry. It’s one of the nicest travel rods we’ve tested.

Runner Up: Daiwa Ardito Travel Rod

This is another high-end rod that has been brought down to a travel rod form factor. This rod comes with a very nice hard case and it breaks down to 30 inches (32 in its case). It features a V-flex ferrule joint system. These ferrules don’t require you to jam the rod pieces all the way together and then struggle to separate them. You simply push them until they snug together and you are all set. You can break down and put the rod together in seconds and be fishing as fast as you can thread your line.

The rod has a high-modulus blank, Fuji Aluminum Oxide guides, unsanded micro-pitch blank, split Eva grip and machined nut hood. It’s a high quality rod that pairs nicely with your favorite bait caster. It comes in 7-foot medium, 7-foot medium heavy and 7-foot, 6-inch medium heavy.

Best All-Around / Saltwater Travel Rod

St. croix avid trek rod.

This is a finely crafted American rod with incredible blanks offering uniform performance, strength and ultra-perceptive sensitivity. The premium cork full grip, and quality blanks featuring St. Croix’s IPC mandrels, SCII high modulus carbon, slim profile ART ferrules, Sea Guide Hero hi-grade guides with zirconia rings and stainless gun smoke frames, sea guide hook keeper, and a 15-year-transferable warranty.

This rod can literally do it all. Going to Louisiana to fish the marshes for bass and redfish, this is your rod. Strong, light, smooth, sensitive and easy to pack. The 3-piece rod is 6-foot, 6-inch MH rod with a lot of power but great castability. This rod is a joy to fish with and you can expect it to last a long time with that kind of warranty.

Best Telescopic Travel Rod

Bass pro aventur1 telescoping rod.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Aventur1 telescoping rod. It features 6 sections but 8 guides for uniform castability and a nice line path while fighting fish. The unique guide system has floating guides as well as guides permanently affixed to the rod sections. So you won’t fight with line on the blank on this travel rod.

The 7-foot medium power rod fished really well and I was pretty taken aback at how nice this rod fished for $59. A rod that will likely always be in my travel plans. With an RT2 graphite blank, Fuji aluminum oxide guides, Fuji reel seat, with EVA split grips and X-Wrap rubber cork butt cap, this is a pretty functional telescoping rod for travel fishing.

Best Big Swimbait Travel Rod

F5 departure travel rods.

The folks at F5 Custom Rods make some of the nicest big swimbait rods available today. These are custom made rods from blanks to handles to accents. They are often very selective in how they build rods and you usually have to get lucky enough to catch a rod on a drop. However, the F5 Departure Travel Rods are often in stock and I picked up a H and XH rod a year or so back.

These are two of my favorite big swimbait rods that I use for crankdowns like the Bull Shad 4×4 and the Toxic Whippersnappers, for glides like the 86 Baits Doomrider, KGB Swimbaits Chad Shad or the Deps Slide Swimmer 250 and of course for my jointed swims like the Bull Shad 8 inch.

The rods are both 3-piece rods and are custom made with a full extra long camo EVA handle. The ones the often sell are split grips. The rod blanks are solid. Even with three pieces I had no issues heaving big baits like the Slide Swimmer which weighs 6 1/2 ounces.

They are going to run you about $289 a piece for these rods. But I am so happy to have them because I can take a pack of my favorite big baits and a very high-end swimbait rod literally everywhere I go to chase trophies all over the country and out of the country for that matter.

Best Travel Rod on a Budget

Favorite fishing army geo rod.

This is an impressive rod not only for the price but for how well this 4-piece rod fishes and fights fish. We caught some really quality bass on this rod this spring and it is a legit fun spinning rod to fish. I love that I threw it in my suitcase, loaded up and went to Arkansas and broke it out and caught a bunch of nice bass that were moving shallow to spawn.

Even my brother-in-law enjoyed fishing with this travel rod. And at $39, it’s a hard rod to pass up. The 4 pieces in their hard travel tube are 26 inches. The pieces are barely 23 inches. The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch medium-heavy spinning rod. I used it to skip Senkos around shallow cover a lot this spring. And it sets a nice hook and has a ton of backbone to land big bass. Our biggest on it was 6 pounds, 4 ounces this spring.

Buy at FavoriteUSA.com

Runner up: Ugly Stik GX2 4-piece Travel Combo

At $44 at Walmart, you can’t go wrong with this nearly indestructible travel rod. The Ugly Stik has been the staple of affordable travel rods. They can take abuse and continue to catch and land fish.

Best Trout Travel Rod

St. croix trout series pack rod  .

For the adventurer who needs a light and packable trout rod to get to remote locations, this is the Cadillac of adventure rods. This rod says trout, but it’s a dynamite bluegill, crappie and even smallmouth rod for remote streams and creeks. It’s a beautifully built rod at only 2.9 ounces and 3 pieces, it compacts down to be no added weight in your backpack.

I paired it with a small 1000 spinning reel and 4-pound line and really enjoyed fishing this rod a lot. It will become one of my staple creek travel rods now. It throws little baits effortlessly and had a nice backbone for such a light rod. A real joy to fish with.

Best Panfish Telescoping Rod

Bnm poles little mighty telescoping rod  .

I have to admit, I’m a little blow away by this rod. I grew up crappie and bluegill fishing with my father in Florida and Arkansas with telescoping fiberglass rods from B’n’M Poles. So I have a lot of nostalgia when it comes to these types of rod. But the new Little Mighty Rod is something special.

While it’s not technically a travel rod, it’s a telescoping rod that reaches out to 20 feet and breaks down to barely 22 inches. It looks like a bright orange track baton but it extends to a masterful reach out and touch a crappie or bluegill telescoping rod quickly.

One word of caution, be sure you extend the rod small sections first. So grab the string tab on the tip and pull it out that way. Don’t slide the sections out by dumping the open end out or you will have issues with sections getting out of order and blocking each other. Same for breaking it down. Big sections first and be sure to leave the string out when you put the cap on.

Other than that, I enjoyed testing this rod a lot. I honestly didn’t think much of it when I got it. But after using it I can think of all sorts of places I want to take and fish with this rod. Once you get the hang of maneuvering 20 feet of rod with a fish on the end it’s a pretty fun stick to fish with.

Other Travel Rod Considerations

Ark rods genesis rods.

This was my original travel rod and I’ve put a lot of miles on it. It’s caught fish in Nebraska, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. This is a two piece travel rod that comes with a nice padded bag.

Read our full Ark Genesis 2-piece travel rod review

The rod joins together nicely and fishes so well. The very narrow blanks are durable and sensitive. I’ve caught fish just about every way you can on these rods. I have the 6-foot, 8-inch MH and the 7-foot, 6-inch MH rods and have flipped, frogged, spinnerbait fished, jigged, cranked, popped a topwater popper and burned a buzz bait with these rods. A great option that gives no sacrifice in performance in a 2-piece travel rod.

SixGill Argos Travel Rods

A very nicely made travel pack rod, the Argos Travel Rod is a 4-piece rod built on a 24T Toray Carbon blank. Comes with a 25 inch travel case. It fishes like your nicest bass rod but you can tuck it under a jacket and take it with you anywhere. The rod loads nicely on the cast and has enough back bone with it’s 7-foot MH frame to fight any size bass you might tangle with. A very nice travel rod option.

Buy from Sixgillfishing.com

Zebco 33 Spincast Telescopic Combo

This is an affordable option at $25 but it’s not made to handle big fish in my opinion. It’s a great rod for catching panfish around a campsite, or of the dock on vacation. But it’s not made for fishing for larger fish. The rod bends easily at the tip under load and the line cuts across the rod to the next guide. So just be cautious with bigger fish on this setup. But for $25, you can catch the heck out of a bunch of panfish with this setup.

Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod

I haven’t had a chance to review the latest offerings from Hardy yet, but one of my all time favorite travel rods is my Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod. It’s a 9-foot, 5-weight rod. It is the perfect pack rod for hiking into remote streams and chasing fish on the fly. This is the Ferrari of travel rods in my opinion. Everything is first class from the aluminum case, styled bag, ferrule covers, and beautiful craftsmanship on the Sintrix 440 blank.

Shimano Convergence Travel Rod

This 7-foot, 4-piece rod is another great do-it all travel rod. It’s a great rod for a lot of different species and lures in that 1/4 ounce to 3/4 ounce size. It breaks down to 25 inches so it will fit in almost all your bags and it comes in a nice hard case with a shoulder strap if you want to carry it on your back while you hike. It’s very well made and fished nicely with a variety of reels.

St. Croix Triumph Travel Rod

This work-horse travel rod serves a ton of different purposes. It’s 6-foot, 6-inch size makes it a great size for tight quarters. I loved fishing some small streams near the house with this rod. A fun little rod for wading creeks or winging around on bigger waters on your travels. It’s small form factor of 24 inches makes it a great pack rod to keep in your vehicle or throw in your bag on long trips. It’s a very nice blank divided into 4 pieces. It’s strong, sensitive and light. A great travel version of their very popular Triumph line.

Telescopic fishing rods ensure that an angler can put a compact package in a suitcase, vehicle or backpack, travel anywhere and be ready to fish at a moment’s notice. Unlike multi-piece travel rods, you can’t lose one section and be completely out of luck, and they won’t spring into a fractured mess while fighting a fish if not properly put together. To some extent, they’ve fallen out of favor in the U.S. domestic market, but there are still some options available that will get the job done. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Best Overall: Daiwa Ninja X
  • Best for Kids: Eagle Claw Spinning Pack-It Rod
  • Best Combo for Kids: Zebco 33 Spincast Telescopic Combo
  • Best Bargain: Sougayilang Combo Spinning Rod and Re el
  • Best Telescopic Baitcasting Rod: KastKing Blackhawk II

How I Chose the Best Telescopic Fishing Rods

I began testing telescopic rods with low expectations, figuring that they were fodder for infomercials and gimmick products at the Dollar Store. At the low end, there are still plenty that will be unusable for experienced and picky anglers. But I was surprised that some manufacturers have found the wherewithal to equip theirs with quality components and one-piece-style actions. Any rod that collapsed at an inopportune time or had too many dead spots was immediately dinged, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that there were some that never failed when assembled properly, and could be implemented into my everyday fishing arsenal.

  • A rod at this level and price should come with a case

Daiwa’s footprint throughout Asia and Europe, where telescopic rods are more popular than they are in the U.S., makes them a serious player in this space, and this rod—also available in other lengths and options—will find a home in serious anglers’ travel bags. It feels remarkably like a one-piece rod, with no dead spots or odd transfer points during the cast, and the sections lock into place firmly, with little chance that the rod will collapse or twist. I used this rod to dropshot and for throwing a Ned Rig, and found it to be fairly sensitive and to enable long casts. It would also excel with light crankbaits, hair jigs, and other finesse lures, although I could also see employing it for light saltwater use. In fact, I found it to be a joy to fish with and quickly forgot that it was telescopic fishing rod until it was time to go home. I did have to add a protective case for travel, since it came with only a flimsy cloth cover and a plastic tip protector.

Best Telescopic Rod for Kids: Eagle Claw Spinning Pack-It Rod

  • 5-foot 6-inches
  • Fiberglass blank
  • EVA Foam Handle
  • Five sections
  • Ultra-durable construction
  • Wire framed ceramic guides won’t be bent or broken by regular use
  • Very affordable
  • Not very sensitive

This is an ideal choice for your scout or camper headed off on their first fishing trip, or on a trip where fishing might serve as an ancillary or incidental activity. The modest length and short EVA grip are built for smaller bodies. The components are super-durable, including the guides and reel seat. It’s not the lightest of the best telescopic fishing rods. It’s also not the most sensitive. And for this bargain of a price, it doesn’t come with a case. More importantly, the return on investment is immense, as it puts your youngster in a position to catch everything from panfish to trout to bass to light saltwater species. It also comes as an affordable combo with a matching spinning reel.

Best for Kids: Zebco 33 Spincast Telescopic Combo

  • 4.1:1 gear ratio spincast reel spooled with 10 pound test line
  • Stainless steel covers and metal gears
  • Extra-durable construction
  • Push-button reel easy to operate
  • 6-foot length unusual in bargain packages, will last through various transitions
  • Not particularly sensitive

There’s nothing easier to operate than a spincasting combo, but most of them are effectively toys. Few are made for the rigors of harsh use or larger species. This combo will help your budding pro start off with smaller panfish and trout, and then carry them all the way up to more serious pursuits. In fact, when they decide it’s time to move on to a baitcaster, they can simply remove this reel and put it on the rod. It’s not super-sensitive, but it’ll do for most applications, and will handle a variety of lures or baits. Zebco has built their name in this sphere, and there’s a reason that just about every long term angler has a Zebco 33 in their history – it’s a gateway to fun.

Best Bargain Telescopic Rod Combo: Sougayilang Combo Spinning Rod and Reel

  • Carbon fiber and fiberglass composite blank
  • SIC ceramic guides
  • Metal and foam split grip handle
  • Comes with a reel, extra spool, braided line and small lure kit
  • Durable case has custom-molded spaces for each component
  • Available in other lengths and powers
  • Overbuilt construction makes the rod heavy

I really didn’t expect much from this rod and reel combo. I figured that the unknown brand and inclusion of numerous components at a low price reeked of disposability. To that end, it wasn’t as sensitive or light as the Daiwa Ninja, but my first impressions were wrong. This is a rod that I wouldn’t hesitate to fish with in the salt or for larger species like catfish and pike, or even bluefish and stripers. I learned that when my Chatterbait was engulfed by a big blue cat. The reel drag worked perfectly. After a time, I subdued the slimy beast without any glitches or problems. The metal handle is heavy, but in situations where that’s a feature rather than a bug, this rod will treat you right.

Best Telescopic Bait Casting Rod: KastKing Blackhawk II

  • Seven different lengths from 6-foot 6-inch to 8-foot
  • Various medium and medium heavy actions, plus a heavy inshore-oriented rod
  • 24-ton Carbon Matrix blank with glass tip section
  • Split grip EVA handle
  • Lightweight thanks to graphite reel seat and EVA handle
  • Durable stainless steel guides
  • Huge array of lengths and actions
  • Would benefit from a quality case

KastKing has made heavy inroads into the fishing market in just a few short years, with a wide arrange of bargain, premium and specialty items, including dedicated bait finesse systems. Their approach to telescopic rods is no less comprehensive, and this set of bargain telescopic rods are much better than their price tag would indicate. In fact, at this level, it makes sense to get several of them, the better to fill out a traveling arsenal. Most telescopic rods tend to be for beginners, or in mid-range actions, but KastKing actually took the needs of traveling anglers into account. If you want an 8-foot heavy-action rod that’s suitable for flipping or saltwater or big pike, they’ve got you covered. But, there are also 7-foot 6-inch fast and moderate fast medium heavies, which means you don’t have to compromise when you’re fishing a worm or a crankbait. I’d feel comfortable going to a distant lake with a small set of these packed in my suitcase, ready for action.

Final Thoughts

Most of us who’ve moved onto specialized fishing and high-end rods turn up our noses at the thought of a telescopic rod or multi-piece rods in general. They’re seen as compromise solutions, good but not ideal, made for last minute insertion into a suitcase. In some cases that’s accurate, but if you look closely there are rods in this category that are better than those low expectations. Some of them even feel like your regular tournament tools. Find a few that you like with the right level of components and keep them handy, even when you don’t expect to be fishing – you’ll be surprised at how often they come into play and produce “bonus fish,” some of which may be true trophies.

7 Best Telescopic Fishing Rod & Reel Combos (2022)

Updated: Jun 30, 2022

best telescopic fishing rod and reel combo

The collapsable fishing rod was invented years ago to solve the problem of traveling with fishing equipment. Before these designs, if you wanted to travel long distances to catch fish, you would need to focus all your attention on protecting your 6-10ft pole.

With the products available on today's market, you can collapse your fishing set up to make it fit easily in a backpack, suitcase, or the trunk of your car. This guide discusses the seven best telescopic fishing rod and reel combos on the market and why some products are more formidable than others.

Comparing Brands & Models

If you take a look online, you'll likely come across dozens of telescopic fishing rods being sold by various companies. This is because the actual design is not difficult to produce, and many foreign compies have developed cheap knock-off items.

We'll be discussing the products from brands that have built trustworthy reputations. The combos on this list will last you many years of use and don't break easily like the other flimsy and poorly-made rods on the market.

This telescopic rod is made from E-glass, making it surprisingly strong and sensitive for the price. Zebco includes a one-year warranty with this model, so you have the option to return this product with no questions asked.

The spinning reel included in this kit has exceptional casting distance and plenty of torque for battling larger fish species.

A spare spool, 110 yards of fishing line, 3 fishing lures, 12 fishing accessories, and a carrying case are included with the purchase.

The rod itself is as durable as it gets, and the reel has buttery smooth reeling. We recommend this setup to anglers that want a single rod to handle everything. From stripers, largemouth bass, catfish, and trout to any saltwater gamefish.

123rf.com (borissos)

Telescopic fishing rods are the ultimate option in portability and versatility when it comes to angling. Although the overall performance of telescopic rods is typically inferior to that of traditional fishing poles, there are some higher quality options on the market worth owning for travel and convenience in a number of different scenarios.

If you enjoy hiking into the wilderness and often come across fishable water – you ought to have a highly packable fishing system on your person for the backcountry. Alternatively, if you’re the kind of avid angler who can’t help but pull over to the side of the road when you see a productive looking stream or pond – you better have a telescopic fishing pole ready to go tucked under the seat!

No doubt one of the coolest and most practical fishing gadgets we can think of, our top list has tracked down the best options worth buying and gifting !

1. Daiwa Ninja X Telescopic Fishing Rods

Daiwa Ninja X Telescopic Fishing Rods

  • Available in a wide array of rod lengths as well as strengths (maximum casting weight)
  • Premium cork handle
  • Aluminum oxide guides
  • Carbon fiber blank with tread-wrapped guides feels more like a standard fishing pole than a telescopic rod
  • Nice quality reel seat will pair nicely with any spinning reel
  • 9, 10, and 12 foot options are suitable for surfcasting applications
  • Fairly expensive option
  • Does not include a reel
  • Collapsed length is fairly long depending on the model you choose

Daiwa’s Ninja X Telescopic Fishing Rods are a top-notch option for anglers seeking a collapsible rod that looks, feels, and performs like a standard one or two-piece spinning rod. Featuring a strong backbone and fast tip action, the Ninja X is built for fishermen who refuse to sacrifice quality for the sake of portability.

Unlike most telescopic options on the market, this rod is available in a wide array of lengths as well as a plethora of maximum casting weights, so you can really narrow down this option to the exact rod specs you’re looking for. There are even a few options over 10 feet long that are capable of casting big, heavy plugs, so this is a great portable go-to for surfcasting applications.

The carbon fiber blanks are equipped with a premium cork handle and Aluminum oxide, tread-wrapped guides, so Daiwa has not cut any corners here. Even the reel seat has been built with a long lifespan and sharp aesthetics in mind.

The one real downfall of the Ninja X is that it does not collapse as compact as some other telescopic options. This is because the first section includes the long cork handle and a fair amount of the rod blank. While it may not break down quite as short as some other choices, the resulting effect of this style of telescoping rod is a far superior action, as well as greater overall integrity. If you can spare an extra couple of inches when storing/traveling with this rod, the decision is a no-brainer in our opinion.

2. Daiwa Legalis Telescopic Allround Fishing Rod

Daiwa Legalis Telescopic Allround Fishing Rod

  • Available in two different lengths (8.86 and 10.82 feet)
  • Saltwater approved option featuring a casting weight of 0.35-1.76 ounce
  • HMC+ carbon fiber blank provides great sensitivity and strength
  • Cork and EVA handle
  • Titanium oxide guides
  • CNC cut aluminum reel seat
  • No reel included
  • Collapsed length is fairly long at 30-33 inches depending on the model

The Daiwa Legalis Telescopic Allround Fishing Rod is a wonderfully versatile, fairly heavy-action rod option that’s suitable for targeting saltwater species, and bigger fish in general.

Able to cast baits up to 1.76 ounces, this rod means business. Available in 8.86 or 10.82 foot lengths, you could even use this powerhouse for surf casting. The downside to this rod’s longer length is that when collapsed, it measures 30 or 33 inches depending on the model – so it’s not as portable as many of the other options on the market.

The HMC+ carbon fiber blank provides both great sensitivity and strength and will feel more like a one or two-piece rod in your hands than most telescopic options. Equiped with a cork and EVA handle, Titanium oxide guides, and a CNC-cut aluminum reel seat, Daiwa has engineered this option for high performance and long lifespan without cutting any corners.

For those seeking a powerful fishing rod capable of tossing heavy baits and pulling on big fish, this is no doubt an option worth checking out!

3. KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rods

kastking telescopic fishing rod

  • Available in 14 lengths and actions including baitcasting options
  • KastKing KastFlex Toray 24-Ton Carbon Matrix blank has impressive angler ratings for sensitivity
  • EVA handle and reinforced reel seat
  • One year warranty
  • Guides are stainless steel and not ceramic coated - be mindful fishing braid with this setup
  • Farily expensive option compared to the competition, but you get what you pay for
  • No included reel or tackle

If you research telescopic fishing poles, you’ll come across a ton of reviews that state something along the lines of “I like this rod, but I still prefer my telescopic KastKing”. The brand is mentioned for its superior feel and longterm durability in a plethora of product reviews for other collapsible rods, so we went ahead and tracked down the Blackhawk II .

This purchase is just for the telescopic pole. There’s no included reel or tackle – similar to the Mako by Hurricane previously listed, this rod is geared towards more serious anglers looking for a quality collapsible setup. There are 14 different available lengths and actions for this model rod, including baitcasting options so you can effectively match whatever style of fishing you have in mind.

A variety of options is a beautiful thing when it comes to telescopic rods, you’re MUCH more likely to be thrilled with your new rod if you can select your desired size, action and rod type.

KastKing’s KastFlex Toray 24-Ton Carbon Matrix blank has impressive angler ratings for sensitivity and also casts quite well. There are lighter weight, more dainty poles available as well as more heavy duty options for casting heavier tackle to bigger fish.

An EVA rod butt and reinforced reel seats add to this rods durability but the rod guides are unfortunately not ceramic. Fishing braided line may damage the guides so be mindful of that. This is the weak point of the Blackhawk II that ought to be considered, otherwise a solid telescopic pole option that claims a whole lot of honorable mention.

4. KastKing Compass Telescopic Fishing Rods and Combos

KastKing Compass Telescopic Fishing Rods and Combos

  • Wide array of rod lengths and actions available with and without reels
  • Sensitive graphite composite blank
  • Stainless steel guide frames with Titanium Oxide ceramic rings are compatible with flouro, mono, and braid
  • Collapses to just 17-inches long
  • Rod includes a hook keeper
  • Quality of the included reel if purchasing a combo is adequate
  • Most purchase options do not include a reel
  • Hook keeper is below, rather than above the reel seat which some anglers find frustrating
  • Rod handle is cheaply built

If you have a specific rod length and action in mind, chances are KastKing has you covered with an option from their wide array of Compass Telescopic Fishing Rods. Available in a vast selection of both spinning and casting rod lengths and actions, you can really narrow down your preferred rod set up with this model!

Built with a sensitive graphite composite blank and stainless steel guide frames with Titanium Oxide ceramic rings, the main components of this rod are well built for performance. The guides are totally compatible with flouro, mono, and braided lines, so you don’t have to be mindful of what you have spooled up.

The rod handle and reel seat are unfortunately built a bit cheap in our opinion, but only in regards to feel and aesthetic – the performance should be just fine. The split rear handle design is intended to help reduce weight even further and enables the rod to be perfectly balanced, but we think they could have executed this a bit better by including an authentic cork handle. It’s a matter of preference really, so maybe this detail is less important to you.

Able to collapse down to just 17 inches, this is furthermore a very nicely packable and portable rod option that can truly come with you anywhere.

We suggest pairing this rod with a higher quality casting or spinning reel of your choosing, but if you decide to spring for one of the Compass combos that include a reel, the hardware is well reviewed for reliable service and performance.

Find more KastKing Compass Telescopic Fishing Rods and Combos information and reviews here.

5. Hurricane Mako Telescopic Fishing Rod

Hurricane telescopic fishing rod

  • More heavy duty than most telescopic rods
  • Great price point without a junky reel
  • 6-Section fiberglass rod blank casts well and has impressive sensitivity
  • Reel seat is simple and effective, a good sign of long term durability
  • Ceramic guides
  • Doesn't collapse as small or as lightweight as a lot of the competition - this is a more heavy duty unit that's closer to a traditional fishing pole
  • No reel included (pro or con when balanced with cost depending on what your needs are)
  • Some might not like the chunky aesthetic

Here’s the no-frills, all business telescopic fishing pole you’re looking for if you already know you don’t want to bother with a junky. limited lifespan included spinning reel.

The Mako Telescopic Rod by Hurricane is a bit more of a heavy-duty option than most of the competition that is better built to handle bigger fish. Its inherent design is also likely to hold up to wear and tear better than most alternatives in the long run.

There are no added extras, no travel case and no unnecessary features with the Mako. This is a quality telescopic fishing rod and nothing else. This is your best option if you’re a more experienced angler who wants to avoid paying for low quality tackle and for a reel that will only last a season.

If you’re new to spin fishing and don’t own much gear, are shopping for a child or simply want an all-in-one setup, then look towards the other options listed here.

I like the Mako because its all-fiberglass construction coupled with ceramic guides. The reel seat is furthermore built with stainless steel hoods and the connections between blanks are engineered to be both simple and robust. Like I said – all business.

This unit is available as either a seven or eight foot option, so it’s not really geared towards smaller freshwater species. This is an awesome largemouth bass, carp or saltwater telescopic pole.

Check out this 5.5 foot telescopic fishing rod from Quantum for another no-frills option that’s lighter weight and more geared towards smaller freshwater species.

6. KINGSWELL Telescopic Fishing Rod and Reel Combos

KINGSWELL Telescopic Fishing Rod and Reel Combo

  • 6 foot 9 inch rod length features a moderate to fast action
  • Compatible with 8-15lb line, making this a great choice for bass, trout, carp, and other medium sized species
  • Features 5 fixed guides and 3 floating guides that effectively reduce line friction while casting
  • Rod blank is built from Japanese 24/30 ultra high density carbon fiber
  • Collapses down to 22 inches
  • Attractive rod blank, wood foregrip, reel seat, and reel
  • Features alignment lines for easy assembly
  • Adequate quality Kingswell S3000 reel features an aluminum body, 5+1 stainless steel ball bearings, and a 5.2:1 gear ratio
  • Reel offers an impressive 15 pounds of drag
  • Carry bag included
  • Only one rod length available
  • Carry case does not leave much room for additional gear

KINGSWELL’s Telescopic Fishing Rod is a well-reviewed option for great feel, aesthetics, and overall performance that you can purchase with or without an included spinning reel.

This is a 6 foot 9 inch rod featuring a moderate to fast action that’s compatible with 8-15lb line, making this a great choice for bass, trout, carp, and other medium-sized species. The rod blank is built from Japanese 24/30 ultra high density carbon fiber, and well rated for both sensitivity and powerful backbone.

The rod blank, wood foregrip, reel seat, and reel are all aesthetically pleasing, and both look and feel more reminiscent of a standard one or two piece fishing pole than a collapsible option. When it comes time to pack it up, the rod breaks down to 22 inches in length.

If you spring for the combo, the Kingswell S3000 reel is impressive for the price point, featuring an aluminum body, 5+1 stainless steel ball bearings, and a 5.2:1 gear ratio. It also sports 15 pounds of drag – far from shabby in our opinion.

With a carry bag included, you can easily and safely transport this rod anywhere you want to fish. All in all, an excellent value set up for anglers chasing medium-sized species

7. Sougayilang Telescopic Fishing Rod/Reel Combos

Sougayilang telescopic fishing rod

  • Several sizes available
  • 1 year warranty
  • Handle is also telescopic for different angling styles
  • Ceramic guides and fiber glass/carbon fiber construction
  • Solid customer service
  • Carry case is not designed to accomodate for much other gear
  • Reel quality is adequate but not impressive
  • Issues with quality control - make sure to inspect your new rod carefully for defects or integrity issues

Here’s a popular telescopic fishing rod option from Sougayilang that will no doubt get the job done. This rod is available in three different lengths; 5.91, 6.89 and 7.87 feet making it a viable option for both fresh and saltwater applications.

You can purchase just the rod and reel, the combo with a carry a case, or the combo with the carry case as well as a small fishing “kit” including some lures, weights, hooks, and braided line.

The rod is built from both high-density carbon fiber as well as fiberglass, so the construction is sound. This setup is also built with ceramic guides indicating good attention to detail and long potential life span. The handle or rod butt is also telescopic and therefore extendable, but be careful not to damage this feature – if you blow out the threads on the handle then you’ll be left with a rod that has a free-floating butt and therefore very low sensitivity.

For how compact this rod breaks down (the shorter length rods are just 16.5 inches), the carry case is not very low profile. It could be designed far less bulky – but the rod itself is quite packable and great for hikes or for on the go storage.

All things considered, the included reel is one of the better options when it comes to telescopic fishing combos, but you’ll still likely want to equip the rod with something of higher quality for optimum performance.

There are some apparent issues with quality control with this product, but that’s fairly standard for plenty of decent telescopic rods – it’s a sensitive design-type that sometimes makes it out of the factory despite issues with integrity. Good news is, there’s a one year warranty on this setup so if you end up with a less than perfect unit you can have it easily replaced.

Nice sensitivity, impressive packed dimensions, a low price tag, and a tough aesthetic; this is a great go-to option from Sougayilang.

Find more Sougayilang Telescopic Fishing Rod/Reel Combos information and reviews here.

8. Sougayilang Telescopic Fishing Rod and Reel Combo

Sougayilang telescopic fishing rod

  • Stainless steel hooded reel seats
  • Extendable rod butt
  • Wide array of rod lengths available
  • Great customer service
  • No carry case included
  • Extendable rod butt although a nice feature has potential to malfunction - go easy on it
  • Reel is adequate, but nothing impressive

Here’s another collapsible unit from Sougayilang that should be on your radar. I personally prefer this combo to the one previously listed because of the seemingly greater integrity of the collapsible rod butt. It’s a more straight forward, less problematic (in theory) version of the same rod.

The overall design, collapsible schematic, and materials used for the rod and guides are all the same as the other Sougayilang rod listed – as is the one year warranty. This rod simply has a slightly different aesthetic and includes stainless steel hooded reel seats for better defense against saltwater corrosion.

This rod is furthermore offered in a wider array of sizing ranging from 5.9 to 10.8 feet in length with corresponding reel sizes in the 2000 to 5000 range. Some of the larger sized rods could be what you’re looking for if you’re in the market for a collapsible fishing rod to target larger saltwater species.

The longest length rod still breaks down to just 20 inches when collapsed – impressive stats for an almost 11-foot fishing rod!

There is no carry case included with this combo, but Sougayilang’s travel cases are not very impressive anyway. If portability is your priority then you’re better off coming up with your own carry system.

The reel is better than the typical standard when it comes to telescopic fishing rod combos, but once again, nothing special. If you want a collapsible fishing setup that is truly badass, purchase a higher quality reel or pull one off of one of your existing setups.

9. YONGZHI Kid’s Telescopic Fishing Rod

yongzhi telescopic fishing rod

  • Great option for the kiddos that's a perfect introduction to fishing
  • Excellent price point
  • Nice array of tackle included for the beginner angler
  • Three different color options available
  • 60 inch (5 feet) length is super compact when collasped at just 14 inches long
  • Included tackle is great for those who are new to angling (especially for the cost) but the quality is not impressive
  • Shorter length of the rod makes this unit suitable for smaller sized fish only (rated up to 11 pounds)
  • Reel quality is poor - consider this unit for the portability of the rod or for an up and coming young angler

Here’s a super budget option that’s great for the kids. Toss this little unit into an up and coming anglers knapsack and they’ll never be without some fishing gear!

The quality of the reel and fishing tackle is on the lower end of the spectrum, but we’ve included this combo here because of the quality and design of the fishing pole as well as the cost.

Don’t get us wrong, this is an awesome little set up by YONGZHI that can be used as-is for the right type of angler or fishing context – it’s just not what you’re looking for if you’re in the market for a higher-end collapsible fishing setup.

Despite this being a fishing combo for kids, the included rod is quite decent. The total length is just five feet and the pole breaks down impressively compact (closed length of 14 inches). The guides are ceramic and the blanks are carbon fiber – YONGZHI hasn’t cut any corners in terms of materials when compared to the competition.

The spinning reel can be easily converted from left to right hand retrieve and is more than adequate to learn how to fish on. It won’t last for long, but certainly long enough to get a youngster hooked on fishing and ready for an upgrade! The same goes for the included tackle, it’s lower quality stuff but will absolutely still catch fish in the right body of water.

All in all, a great value telescopic fishing rod that’s perfect for the kids or as a back-up/emergency setup.

10. PLUSINNO Carbon Fiber Telescopic Fishing Rod Combo

PLUSINNO Telescopic Fishing Rod

  • Included reel/tackle are decent quality
  • Nice schematic to the carry case
  • Aluminum reel seat
  • Rods are a bit longer than most of the competition when broken down (shortest rod is 16 inches)
  • Seems to be poor quality control (fortunately there's a solid 1 year warranty)
  • Issues with the rod blanks turning while in use

This little collapsible fishing setup from PLUSINNO is one of the best options for grab and go portability. I particularly like the way the carry case is designed, it utilizes space well making for an exceptionally portable fishing system.

If you’re looking to own a highly packable telescopic fishing rod and keep it handy with some tackle, this is a great choice.

All four rod sizes in this series may be a bit longer than a lot of the competition, but the effectiveness of the carry case in my opinion, makes up for this. You can always secure the rod to the side of a backpack if you want to be hands-free and leave the carry case behind.

The rod is carbon fiber reinforced with fiberglass composite and the guides are ceramic. The reel seat is also corrosion-resistant aluminum which is a nice touch. It has a soft action and therefore high sensitivity if that’s what you’re into.

The 3000 reel is well reviewed for smooth function and accurate drag adjustments, but it’s a bit large for the smaller sized rods in my opinion. As with all the other rods and combos here, we suggest using your own, trusted spinning reel. That being said, the included reel here is actually a practical back-up reel or perhaps will pair nicely with another rod in your gear locker!

The included tackle here is also of better quality than what you typically see included in these telescopic combo deals. The lures and soft baits, as well as the hooks and weights, appear to be pretty decent. You can never have enough tackle!

All in all, this setup offers a reliable and affordable telescopic fishing rod with a reel, carry case and set of tackle that outperforms the other budget options.

11. OKUMA Voyager Spinning Travel Kit

okuma travel spinning rod

  • Offers impressive sensitivity and feel performing more like a trditional spinning rod
  • Includes a nice quality travel case
  • Tackle box included
  • Cork grips!
  • Not technically a telescopic rod - but still highly portable
  • Reel quality is not impressive
  • Have to keep a close eye on rod connections to ensure they don't come apart

Ok, so this technically is not a telescopic fishing rod, but this setup from Okuma is almost just as portable and offers a far superior action to most collapsible alternatives.

This is a five-piece, six foot long light action travel rod that comes with a decent spinning reel and a handy dandy travel case. If you’re willing to sacrifice just a bit of portability for a travel rod that feels a lot closer to a traditional spinning rod, give this unit a look.

Having a five-piece rather than a telescopic rod creates a highly comparable level of portability, but eliminates the potential issues that come with a collapsible rod. I personally prefer traditional rod connections rather than a rod that might get stuck together due to salt or corrosion. It’s a matter of personal preference.

The travel case measures 17 by 9 by 3 inches, so all things considered, it’s still quite a compact fishing setup. The padded travel case furthermore has a slot for fitting a small tackle box so you can bring along everything you need for a fishing excursion.

One realm where this rod gets BIG points is the fact that it has cork grips! Cork over foam really makes the combo feel like a real fishing pole and not a tacky fishing toy. No serious quarells with foam rod handles (they’re fine and honestly hold up better than cork in the long run), but any serious angler appreciates the feel of cork.

The included reel is sized for targeting species like trout, bass, panfish, and walleye, and is actually fairly well reviewed. This unit should fish nicely for at least a season or two, but like all the other options listed here, consider pairing the telescopic rod with even just a slightly higher quality reel (in the 1000 to 3000 size range) and you’ll be thrilled with the results.

Segments over telescoping blanks? That’s for you to decide, but the Okuma Voyager Travel Kit certainly gets a thumbs up from us!

A Unique Fishing Tool!

A collapsible fishing pole is an excellent tool for all sorts of angling contexts and also a great introduction to fishing for kids and adults – stick to our top list for the best quality and value options on the market!

Keep in mind that most telescopic rod and reel combos are not equipped with high-quality spinning reels that are often quite prone to malfunction/failure. Although the included reels can be adequate for beginners and for casual fishing, this post is more focused on the listed rods rather than reels – plan on utilizing (or purchasing) a nicer quality reel that you’re familiar with if you’re a more serious angler looking for a telescopic setup.

Things To Consider While Selecting A Telescopic Fishing Rod:

-Construction Materials: Be wary of aluminum and corrosive metals implemented anywhere in the rod's construction - especially if you're a saltwater angler. Due to the nature of the telescopic design, it's important that the rod is built to last, otherwise, there are bound to be issues with all the blank connections. Ceramic guides are also highly recommended over cheaper alternatives for better long term durability.

-The Reel: Unless you're shopping for a child or for some really simple, laid-back fishing - use your own spinning reel. The quality of almost every included reel with these telescopic combos is adequate, but by no means impressive. Avoid frustrating malfunctions by using a reel you know and trust.

-The Hardware/Overall Design: Most telescopic rod setups are built more or less the same way, but be wary of extra features or unique reel seats, guides or blanks. In our opinion, simple is better. Fewer frills, less potential for mechanical or cosmetic failure.

Spinning Reels

Selecting the right reel for your telescopic rod shouldn't be very challenging. If you purchase a combo, you may find the reel to be unimpressive in terms of its performance and overall quality. The feel of these rods is typically simple and straightforward, so consider a reel option that's reliable, but not too fancy.

A few solid affordable options we know and trust include:

  • Cadence CS5 Carbon Spinning Reel
  • Penn Battle III
  • Piscifun Flame Spinning Reels

Make sure to check out our list of the best value spinning reels for some great alternatives that will pair perfectly with a new telescopic rod.

17 Best Telescopic Fishing Rods in 2023 – Collapsible Rods

Captain Cody Wabiszewski

Growing up I had two options for easily portable fishing poles. A pocket fisherman or a stick pole. A stick pole is literally a small stick wrapped with a fishing string and a hook tied at the end. I really like fishing but often on vacation bringing my fishing pole was not an option. Especially when flying to the destination.

Some of my best memories are catching fish on a simple stick pole. However, lots of big fish got away because let’s face it a stick pole is terrible fishing gear. The lure can not be cast and there is no drag. Some people use plastic hand reels but having an actual fishing pole is a much better option.

best telescopic fishing rods

Telescopic fishing rods are not typically heavy-duty rods set up to catch huge fish. However, adding a high-end reel to a telescopic fishing rod will enable the pole to catch large hard fighting fish. I have seen people in Florida on vacation that literally saw the base off two-piece fishing poles so they can fit them in there luggage. Other people just bring the reels and get cheap one-time use poles at the destination.

Telescopic fishing poles are great to take hiking and camping to catch bass, crappie, walleye, and trout in lakes and streams. It is also great to take on vacations near the ocean to catch sharks, tarpon, and salmon.

One tip when using a telescopic rod is to expand the pole from the tip. When collapsing the pole twist and pull down each section also starting near the tip.

The best option for traveling with fishing gear is to get telescopic fishing poles. These rods are small enough that they can be kept in your vehicle all the time. Collapsible fishing rods also make great gifts allowing people to get excited about all the fish they are going to catch.

Here Are The Best Telescopic Fishing Rods

1. bass pro shops quick draw telescopic combo.

Bass Pro Shops quick draw telescopic spinning rod and reel combo

Shop Bass Pro Shops

Bass Pro Shops has their own telescopic fishing rod called the Quick Draw. The rod comes in three lengths from 5-foot to 6-feet 6 inches. Each rod length comes with a different size reel. The collapses length of the rod is less than 24 inches. The plastic on the front of the rod is just used to hang the rod when selling them. It comes off and stays off when using the rod and reel. Last time I was at Bass Pro Shops I saw these at it seemed like a good combo for freshwater fishing. The rod will work for saltwater fishing but the reel does not have sealed ball bearings. This means it would not hold up over time in a saltwater fishing environment.

For stream and trout fishing the 5 foot rod spooled up with 4 pound line in a good way to go. For freshwater bass fishing a 6 foot 6-inch rod is what I prefer to use. It casts far and allows for a good hook set. In general you are better off with a one piece or two piece rod. However when traveling and backpacking a telescopic rod is very convenient and allows you to have the gear when you need it. Bass Pro Shops also has the Aventure1 telescopic rod in a spinning model and casting model for a baitcast reel . It comes with just the rod rather than as a combo.

2. Profishiency Telescoping Micro Combo

profishiency telescoping spinning rod and reel combo

The Profishiency micro combo is only 18-inches in length when collapsed. This is a great all around freshwater setup to use when traveling. It comes pre-spooled with 160 yards of 6-pound fishing line. This is thin enough line to catch trout and is thick enough line to catch bass. It is ideal for catching small bass, crappie, perch, and bluegill.

The combo also comes with a small tackle box with pliers, hooks, sinkers, and three lures. Having a pliers and extra lures is important when fishing. When backpacking it is not likely you can bring a full tackle box so this small kit if very handy. The rod is only 5-foot in length so expect a fun light tackle experience.

3. Zebco 33 Telescopic Spincast Combo

zebco 33 with a telescopic fishing rod

Buy from Amazon

Shop Tackle Direct

The Zebco 33 spincast reel is the basic reel that most kids learn how to fish with. To cast all you need to do is push the button and fling the lure. The normal size reel has 10 pound line and the micro reel has 4 pound line. This means the rod does not need to be super beefy. However when fishing in local ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams it is a perfect size. It works well to catch bluegill, sunfish, perch, bass, catfish, and trout. Most of the time a small setup like this will get the job done.

The rod length when extended in either 5-feet or 6-feet. When collapsed the rod length is 19-inches for the 5-foot and 22.5 inches for the 6-foot extended length version. This is perfect for placing in a backpack or keeping in the trunk of a car.  Their is also a triggerspin reel option that is good for kids transitioning from a spincast reel to a spinning reel.

4. Zebco 33 Telescopic spinning Combo

zebco 33 spinning telescopic fishing rod and reel combo

Zebco is known for their spincast reels but also make average quality spinning reels. There are two reel options for this combo. The 6-foot rod comes with a reel spooled with 215 yards of 8 pound monofilament line. The 5 foot rods comes with a smaller reel that holds 200 yards of 4 pound line. For pond and lake fishing the larger reel is better when targeting bass, pickerel, and catfish. When fishing in streams and rivers the four pound line is good for creek chubs, small bass, and trout.

The 6-foot rod collapses to a length of 20 inches for travel. While the ultralight 5-foot rod it collapses to a length of 19-inches. This rod and reel combo is intended for freshwater use. The rod itself will work well in saltwater due to the EVA handle and grips. It would be a good idea to get a different ultralight reel that is saltwater rated when fishing in the ocean.

5. Plusinno Carbon Fiber Telescopic Combo

Plusinno EW300 Retractable rod and reel fishing combo

The rod is available in the following four size configurations: 6 feet, 7 feet, 8 feet, and 9 feet and collapse into sizes between 17 inches and 18 inches. There are two packages you can choose from, one with the rod and reel and one with the rod and reel combo with a carry case and a bunch of extra goodies as well.

The rod is constructed from high-density carbon fiber that allows it to have much better sensitivity than the fiberglass competitors and is extremely lightweight. All the hardware is stainless steel to ensure it is saltwater safe and you get the traditional EVA foam handle.

The reel you get is an average low-cost spinning reel. It is alright for light fishing but if you are going to be going for big saltwater fish swapping out the reel would be a good idea. The rod will only take so much force so having smooth drag will allow for larger fish to be caught.

The Pulsinno retractable rods are certainly a good choice for anglers looking or an basic telescoping fishing rod. They are fun to use, offer lots of versatility in a very small collapsible package, and are offered at a reasonable price.

6. Okuma Spinning Travel Kit

okuma spinning travel kit

The Okuma travel kit comes with a 6-foot 5 piece travel rod. Also included is a size 20 Voyager reel and custom travel case. The rod is light action and has a cork grips and durable ceramic eye inserts. The reel is made by Okuma, has a ball bearing drive system and a one-piece anodized aluminum spool.

This setup is not technically telescopic but does serve the same purpose of being compact and used when traveling. The sensitivity, rod weight, and balance are just like a standard one-piece or two-piece fishing rod. This is a great setup to use for most types of freshwater fish like trout, bass, pickerel , crappie, etc.

7. KastKing Blackhawk II

KastKing Blackhawk II Best Telescopic Fishing Rod

There are two types of rods available, spinning and casting. Casting models are for baitcasting reels that are primarily used for bass fishing. When fishing for bass and freshwater species with a spinning reel the standard spinning type rod is best.

The spinning type model means the poles are for spinning reels. There are freshwater spinning reels and saltwater spinning reels .  These rods are available in 8 different lengths from 6.5-feet to 8-feet and have multiple flexibility levels. For large ocean fish like tarpon , the inshore spinning high power would be a good option.

The Blackhawk II uses a graphite constructed rod with floating line guides and a high-density EVA foam handle. The floating line guides are near the front of the rod to allow extra line support near the tip. Most of the guides are fixed like a normal telescopic fishing rod.

The soloscopic performance technology (SPT) essentially means its a six-piece telescopic rod with similar attributes to a single-piece rod. It has similar line performance, full-length power transition, and extremely high sensitivity levels.

This rod is good for beginners and experienced anglers. With so many rod options available there are great rod types for everything from bass fishing to surf fishing .

In the review below the Blackhawk fishing rod will be discussed. This was for the original Blackhawk spinning fishing pole.

The review showed that this rod works well for surf and shore fishing. Even when using high-end spinning reels the rod was able the handle heavy dray and was stiff enough to cast large weights.  Lighter casting models also work great in freshwater.

Options for this rod include spinning rods and baitcasting rods . The baitcasting rod is awesome for a travel fishing pole for freshwater fishing and you can see a detailed review of the baitcasting rod below. It does not come with a baitcasting reel but you can just use any reel you have on your other baitcasting rods.

8. Daiwa Megaforce Telescopic Fishing Rod

daiwa megaforce telescopic fishing rod

The Daiwa Megaforce comes in lengths of 6.89 feet, 7.86 feet, 8.86 feet, and 11.81 feet. Transport or collapsed length of this rod is 24.8 inches. The rods handle is made of both cork and EVA material. The carbon fiber shell of the rod allows it to be lightweight and balanced when casting. Guides on the rod are made with a durable titanium oxide material.

There rod’s actions are rated based on the casting weight of the lures. Casting weight options include .28-.88 ounce, .70-2.10 ounce, 1.41-3.17 ounce, and 3.52-10.58 ounce. I would look at these as the suggested max lure weights. Obviously, a very stiff rod can cast a 1/16 ounce jig but the flexibility and sensitivity of the rods are just not ideal for this light of a lure.

This is a higher-end telescopic fishing rod that is of higher quality than most on the market. The sensitivity of the lightweight actions matches that of one-piece rods. The heavier actions allow for a durable, stiff and strong rod that can cast heavyweights from the shore. If you are a serious fisherman and plan to use a telescoping rod frequently, this is a great option.

9. Eagle Claw Pack-It Telescopic Fishing Rod

Eagle Claw Pack It Telescopic Spinning Rod

This eagle claw is 5.5 feet in length.  The collapsed length is about 18 inches. This is a classic telescopic fishing pole that has been around for a long time. You can get this pole with a reel included for about $10 more. Small trout size reels go good with this rod.

The good thing about this rod is that it is lightweight and great when backpacking long distances. It is a pole that will work well for catching trout, bass, and panfish.

The rod is constructed from the typical fiberglass materials you’d expect to find on most of these rods and it comes with a decent EVA foam handle. Guides are ceramic and the pole comes with a one-year warranty.

10. Sougayilang Carbon Fiber Telescopic Fishing Rod

sougayilang telescopic fishing rod and reel

The Sougayilang rods come in lengths of 5.9 feet, 6.9 feet, 7.9 feet, 8.9 feet, and 9.8 feet. The collapsed lengths range from 18.5 inches to 27.6 inches. The reel is a YB3000 series that will work well to catch most freshwater fish and saltwater fish up to around 10 pounds. Braided fishing line and some basic tackle is included. The carry case is optional and is a lower cost without it.

The rod is made with high-density carbon fiber and fiberglass. Guide rings are ceramic with the guide inserts being made with aluminum oxide. The base grip of the rod is made with EVA which is found on many saltwater spinning rods. This is a good setup for freshwater or saltwater. The longer poles are especially good for surf fishing.

The video below shows the 9-foot version of this pole being used in a pond.

11. Troutboy Black Warrior

troutboy telescopic fishing pole

Troutboy combo rods come in seven different sizing options which are 5 feet 10 inches, 6 feet 10 inches, 7 feet 10 inches, 8 feet 10 inches, 9 feet 10 inches, and 11 feet 10 inches. All models collapse down to a range between 18.8 inches to 26.3 inches.

They also come with different levels of flex and since they’re all carbon fiber, they have excellent sensitivity. Most of the rods are medium-heavy action. The short rods are great for bass fishing and larger rods are great for casting far out while bank or surf fishing.

These rods can come with or without spinning reels . The telescopic rods without a reel is a really great value for a quality pole. The extra cost for the reel is because the reel is of better quality than most combo reels. Size of the reels range from ZM3000 -ZM-5000 which follows the normal thousand series size convention for spinning reels.

12. Goture Sword

Goture Sword telescopic fishing rod

The telescopic fishing rod offered by Goture has length options for just about every type of fishing. Length options for this rod are 6 feet 10 inches, 7 feet 10 inches, 8 feet 10 inches, 9 feet 10 inches, 10 feet 10 inches, and 11 feet 10 inches.

These rods are constructed from E-glass, fiberglass, and carbon fiber.  E-glass is a type of glass that softens instead of melts and acts similarly to fiberglass. E-glass is used often as a reinforcement fiber in the production of fiberglass. This rod is primarily made of carbon fiber with fiberglass reinforcement for extra strength and durability.

Furthering its durability is triple welded stainless steel line guides with ceramic rings. These are a bit heavier than other ceramic guides but they do seem to be extremely durable and capable of withstanding heavy lines.

With all of the emphasis on extra durability, this rod is a bit heavier than most on this list. However, I would also expect it to be one of the toughest. They also used a bunch of corrosion-resistant hardware such as the aluminum reel seat, making this rod great for beach fishing in the ocean. The handle is made with the standard EVA foam.

13. Leo Sports Telescopic Fishing Kit

Leo Sports telescopic fishing rod and reel combo

There are several length options you can choose from including 5 feet, 6 feet,  7 feet, or 8 feet. These rods collapse down to sizes from 13 inches to 17 inches. The rod is constructed of a mixture between carbon fiber and fiberglass and encompasses an EVA foam handle and porcelain guide rings.

This little kit offered by Leo is for novice anglers and kids. It pretty much has everything you need to get started including the rod, a spinning reel, some lures, 300 feet of line, hooks, and a nice Leo carry bag to stuff it all into. The carry bag is a great way to transport the rod and reel and stay organized with lots of tackle. Getting additional fishing tackle will probably be needed depending on what type of fish is being targeted.

The rod is constructed of a very nice looking high-density carbon fiber and fiberglass mixture. These types of rods are purpose-built to provide a happy medium between durability, flexibility, and sensitivity. Attached to the rod are multi-colored piano porcelain guide rings. This is a nice small combo for catching fish like bass  and crappie .

14. Wakeman Telescopic Spinning Rod Combo

Wakeman Ultra series telescopic spinning rod combo

The Wakeman Ultra series is an excellent 7 feet 2-inch carbon fiber rod and collapses into roughly 18 inches. This package includes the rod, spinning reel, and a carry case with foam cutouts. Constructed of fiberglass with an EVA foam handle and is available in three different color schemes. Color options include metallic, black, and tan.

Also included is a convenient carry case with molded foam packaging. Carry bag dimensions are 19.5 inches x 8.5 inches x 3.0 inches.

The reel that comes with it is a single bearing spinning reel with a 5.2:1 gear ratio. The reel probably will not last for years but this package is nice because it stores easily in the travel back for easy transport. This is a good setup for catching typically freshwater fish like bass, panfish, and perch. This would make a great fishing gift as it works for traveling or local fishing.

15. Wild Water Compact Fly Fishing Rod and Reel

wild water compact fly fishing rod and reel

Telescopic rods do not have a long, light action rod that is sensitive enough to work well when fly fishing. However many fly fishing rods break down into a similar size as a collapsed telescopic rod. This is because it is not uncommon for fly fishermen to travel with their gear. Also, it is common for these fishermen to hike long-distance in search of remote streams full of trout or salmon.

The Wild Rater is a 5/6 weight rod that is 9 feet in length and breaks down into 4 sections that are each 28 inches. The total rod weight is old 4.4 ounces. The rod case is 32 inches in length and has a pouch for the reel.

The diameter of the reel is 85mm. It comes spooled with a backing line and leader which means that it comes ready to fish. Orange 20 pound backing line is placed on the spool first. Then the reel is topped with a yellow floating fly line. Reels can easily be changed from left-handed reeling to right-handed reeling.

A total of 9 files that are size 14 come included in the package.  These files include 3 winged black ant, 3 gold ribbed hare’s ear, and 3 parachute Adams.

A 5/6 flyweight rod is best suited for trout, grayling , panfish, and bass. A flyweight of 6-10 is best for larger fish like salmon and steelhead. When targeting big game fish like tarpon a flyweight of 10-14 is typically used.

16. Short Trolling Rod Two-Piece

Now we are going to talk about a very common problem when it comes to traveling and wanting to do some serious fishing. What if you want to catch really big fish or rent a boat and want to troll. Spinning tackle is just not what you want for either of these situations. The solution is to get short two-piece conventional rods or a telescoping rod case.

Fiblink saltwater small trolling rod two piece

The Fiblink offshore heavy trolling rod is 6 feet in length and breaks into two pieces. Heavy-duty roller guides are at each eye including the tip.

The construction of the rod is with E-glass graphite blanks. Corrosion-resistant machined aluminum is used for the reel seat. Hand and foregrips are made with EVA foam and the butt of the rod gimbals. This rod comes with a 1-year warranty.

Without a truck traveling with one piece rods is very difficult. Yes I have done it but it is less that ideal. In my mind I always want a one piece rod and then fish for months with a two piece rods and do not even realize that they are two piece.

Having a rod that can hold a large conventioal reel is needed when trolling offshore an when targeing big fish. If you want to catch big sharks , goliath grouper, mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo etc you are going to need a conventional rod and reel setup. Even if you are trolling for walleye , striped bass, or salmon you are going to want to be using convention fishing reels and poles. In these cases having a telescoping rod case is the way to go.

Plano Airliner Telescoping Rod Case

plano telescoping rods case

This case is 47 inches in length and can extend to 88 inches in length. The tube diameter is 4.5 inches. It can store around 8 rods that are 7 feet in length.  The number of rods it will hold will obviously vary depending on how much space each rod takes up.

Traveling with conventional rods allow for trolling gear to be brought while traveling to catch fish like mahi-mahi and tuna .

Designed to protect the gear during airline travel the case is made of hard-sided plastic. The case has three tiers so it does not need to be fully extended when holding short fishing rods. A carry hand is incorporated into the case. The case could be easily modified to have a carry strap if that is desired.

Having a case like this is a must when bringing lots of fishing gear on an airplane. This might seem excessive to some people but not a die-hard fisherman. Would I rather stand next to the ocean or would I rather be fishing in the ocean? I would rather be fishing and have adequate gear to catch any fish that comes in the area.

Penn Squall Trolling Reel

penn squall trolling reel

The Penn Squall Lever drag two-speed reel comes in sizes of 16vs, 30vsw, and 50vsw. The drags are 26 pounds, 32 pounds, and 40 pounds respectfully.  This reel is made of graphite which makes it lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

This is one of the best big game reels on the market even when not traveling. I always like having a least one 50 class reel on the boat spooled up to catch whatever big fish might be found. A 30 class reel is suitable to catch almost any fish except large sharks , large tuna, wahoo , marlin, or swordfish.

The two-speed system easily shifts from high to low speed by pressing in the large gold button. It shifts from low two high by twisting to release the button. Most of the time the reel is kept at high speed. I only use low speed when cranking up large bottom fish like halibut .

17. Shakespeare Youth Fishing Kit

shakespeare youth fishing kit

The Mickey pole is 2 feet 6-inches in length.  A push-button reel is used and the handle is made of EVA foam. The rod is specifically designed for small children. This reel has been updated to include an easy to hold round reel handle and thumb button extension for easy casting.

The reel comes spooled with a lightweight monofilament fishing line. The reel can also be spooled with a braided line . Because these poles use a lightweight fishing line around 3 pounds it often gets more bites that poles setup with heavy lines. It is humorous and fun when the Mickey pole catches large fish that are too big for kids to reel in. Although not technically telescopic at 2 feet 6-inches it meets the criteria of a fishing rod that is easy to transport and travel with.

What is a Telescoping Fishing Rod?

In easy terms, a telescoping fishing rod is a fishing rod whose pieces fall down into each other to be stored and carried in an extremely small package. They are comprised of multiple sections that fall into each other, down to either the handle or one section before the handle. When deploying, you simply pull out the rod and it will extend into roughly what’s close to a full standard fishing rod, without the hassle of needing to deconstruct the rod or try and fold it up to put it in your car.

Most telescoping fishing rods are constructed of fiberglass or graphite (carbon) and contain much of the same attributes you’d expect to find in a regular fishing rod such as eyelets, an action trigger, etc. Sometimes you’ll see this in sets that contain a telescoping fishing rod and a reel suitable for the rod, but you’ll also find just the rod itself as well, allowing you to choose basically any reel you want.

Anglers generally use telescopic fishing poles for small freshwater fishing, however, if you buy one of decent quality, you could, in theory, use these for just about anything, even saltwater fishing! Just like normal fishing rods, there are several categories of telescoping fishing rods to choose from for different styles and types of fishing.

Other names for these are folding fishing rods (there is another category of rods called folding rods that actually fold, but some people call what I’m talking about a folding rod too), collapsing or collapsible fishing rods, portable fishing rods, or slidable out fishing rods. These are all generally the same and the market for these tends to use multiple different names.

Since telescoping fishing rods collapse into less than a quarter of their uncollapsed size, they make perfect fishing rods for those of you who are biking, driving ATVs, taking a flight, or backpacking to your fishing destination. They can easily fit in a backpack, large suitcase, and I’ve even seen some people ride a bicycle with them in their pant pockets! Furthermore, if you’re low on space, such as living in a small studio apartment or living out of an RV, telescoping fishing rods will certainly be much easier to store than a standard fishing rod.

Telescopic fishing rods are also popular among surfers and paddle boarders as they allow easy transport out into the depths for some quick fishing.

Telescopic Fishing Rods Versus Traditional Full-Size Fishing Rods

When comparing a telescopic fishing rod to a traditional rod, you’re essentially deciding on tradeoffs between performance and convenience. Telescopic rods can be easily collapsed and taken just about anywhere, with easier storage and more options to carry them. Most telescopic rods can collapse into roughly a 2’ long package which is much easier to transport than a full 8-10’ fishing rod!

Like most things in life, convenience comes at a price. Telescopic rods have several joints where they could incur breakages and failures whereas a full-size rod may not have as many and are typically much stronger. This also means that a telescopic rod doesn’t allow for as much flex and bending as a traditional rod.

Furthermore, traditional rods generally have much better quality and/or larger eyelets and more feature-rich handles. Since the whole idea behind engineering a telescopic rod is to create the smallest form factor possible, there are several tradeoffs, such as smaller and lighter components and the inability to use some materials due to the construction of the rod. Furthermore, the fishing experience to a trained eye may be drastically different.

Comparing a telescopic fishing rod to a traditional fishing rod to most people would likely yield very little difference, but putting them into the hands of a seasoned angler would result in immediate observations in behavior. Probably the most prominent attribute is the action. Due to the multi-piece construction of a telescopic rod, you’ll lose a great amount of sensitivity and some claim this may result in missed sets.

While the durability of the telescopic rod may be lower while extended compared to a full-size fishing rod, when you collapse them, they’re extremely durable! This makes sense, as you’re basically compounding the strength of each section when you push them inside each other. Ever broken a rod while falling down a steep bank? That likely won’t happen with a collapsed rod!

Obviously, the market for telescopic capable fishing rods is much smaller than that of traditional fishing rods. With that said, this means there is a much smaller selection and an ever smaller amount of choices when it comes to high-quality rods. Prices for well built telescopic rods tend to be much higher than that of an equivalent high-quality traditional rod. If you’re buying one just to have one as a novelty, though, you can find some extremely cheap ones just to try out and have around for fun.

Since pretty much anything with moving parts is bound to incur degradation over time, telescopic rods can become damaged in a way that ruins their collapsing ability. If one of the rod sections develops a crease or gets bent, you may not be able to collapse it ever again. To make matters worse, dirt and dust can accumulate in between the sections where it’s hard to see and even harder to clean, making the collapsibility rough and inconsistent.

Lastly, if a piece starts to corrode and rust, that will also lower its ability to collapse properly. You should be cleaning all of your fishing equipment regularly, but telescopic fishing poles may require a bit more attention than your average fishing rod.

Is a Collapsible Fishing Rod Right For You?

Many people straight up ask me whether or not they should buy a telescopic fishing rod and to be frank, I don’t have a “one size fits all” type of answer. There are many factors and attributes you would need to consider and I think whether or not a specific style of fishing rod fits you is really up to you and your personal preference.

At the end of the day, there are tradeoffs as we spoke about in the previous section, however, an experienced angler, even with the lower level of sensitivity should be able to catch roughly the same amount of fish with any rod. Some people argue that the rod itself makes all the difference, and although there is some merit to that, I just don’t think the difference is large enough to tell people telescopic fishing rods are awful.

I think if you’re someone who needs the telescopic portability of a rod you should give it a fair chance. After you get used to one, I think you’ll see the differences in sensitivity are minimal, but still, there are differences. If you have to have the absolute best of everything because being a fishing enthusiast with the best gear is your thing, then you should probably stay away from telescopic fishing rods.

There is always the option of having both. Why not? I have both and have had both for a very long time now. I know people who usually fish 90% of the time with their full size 10’ rod but every now and then they simply don’t feel like jamming that pole into their vehicle and they just quickly grab the telescopic rig instead.

My recommendation here isn’t to live or die by a specific type of fishing rod but rather try and use multiple different setups to find the one that’s right for you. Remember, there are many options among all styles of rods, so don’t make your judgment based on just one rod in that category but rather try and use a wide range of options to make sure you like or dislike that specific style. I’ve gotten to try some really terrible telescoping rods that, if I had only ever tried them, I would hate telescopic rods, but I’ve also been fortunate enough to test run a few that have performed incredibly well.

What to Look For When Shopping For a Telescopic Rod

Just like pretty much everything in life, you get what you pay for, so before setting out specific expectations, you’ll need to figure out a budget. You can get your hands on a telescopic fishing rod for as little as $12 if that’s what you want to do and you can also spend several hundred bucks.

If you’ve got a little money to play with, I’d recommend looking at something in the $50-$80 range. Those usually consist of a level of quality that gives you a good idea if using this type of rod is something you’d be interested in without going overboard and spending a lot on a rod you’re not sure about. On the flip side, yes, you can get a telescoping rod for under twenty bucks, but those are hit or miss and usually give up a lot to be offered at that price range, whether it be in quality, durability, experience, or all three.

You can find telescopic fishing rods primarily in either fiberglass, carbon (graphite), or perhaps a mix of the two. Either one isn’t exactly better, but more so just different and you can usually find each of those at every price range, so it really comes down to personal preference. Cheap aluminum and thin steel rod materials are not worth buying and once they bend, they are damaged forever.

Between carbon and fiberglass models are some distinct differences. Carbon fiber rods are usually lighter and more sensitive due to it’s enhanced ability to flex. This also translates into better vibrations and an overall better user experience when it comes to fishing species such as crappie and bluegill since you’d likely be using soft bait and they hit rather lightly.

As a general rule of thumb, but not always, fiberglass takes the cake when it comes to durability and heavier species. Don’t get me wrong, there are some pretty tough carbon fiber rods on the market that can handle some good fights, but the general consensus is that fiberglass is stronger and better suited for larger fish such as walleye or pike.

Aside from the rod material, you’ll also need to consider components. The rod guides or eyelets need to be up to the task at hand. Rod guides constructed of ceramic are usually the best as they are both lightweight, low-profile, and decently durable. The lighter your rod guides are, the better the sensitivity of the entire setup.

Handles are often chalked up as a personal preference by most people and usually, I agree. So long as the handle isn’t going to get damaged easily by the sun or by being wet, it comes down to what you personally prefer.

For me, I like EVA rod handles because they seem to hold up the best in my experience. Cork falls apart, regular plastic is just cheap, and aluminum gets hot and slippery. If you find the rod you want but it doesn’t have your preferred handle, you can always buy grip tape and/or grip cord and some models allow you to change out the handle.

Since we’re buying a telescopic fishing rod for its convenience and small form factor, it makes sense to go with a cork handle. Cork is generally lighter than EVA and cork also tends to have a lower damping effect, which means increased sensitivity.

Telescopic Fishing Rods Versus Telescopic Fishing Poles

Many people use the term “rod” and pole” interchangeably, and although in a normal conversation this may not matter too much when it comes to buying something to fish with, it matters a lot. This guide is focused on telescopic fishing rods, so I won’t talk about poles too much but I want to make sure you know the difference because if you shop around, you’ll likely see both and sometimes the marketing copy used for them is incorrect, leading you to buy the wrong one.

Since I don’t want to go too deep into this, I’ll give you a very quick rundown of the differences. A fishing rod is constructed out of non-natural materials such as fiberglass, graphite, carbon fiber, etc. A fishing pole is constructed out of something natural, such as bamboo, reed, cane, wood, etc.

Another difference is that a fishing rod has eyelets that run up the length of the rod while a fishing pole usually only has a loop at the top of the pole for the line. There are more differences the deeper you get into this topic, but for the most part, that’s a basic explanation that should help guide you through muddy waters so to speak in commerce.

There are not many options for telescopic fishing poles. Many listings will include “pole” in the description for the people searching that term or the people that don’t know the difference. At the end of the day, stick to searching for telescopic fishing rods, as almost all of these will be constructed from something that poles are not.

I have used telescopic rods since the 1960s and never had one brake. The best ones I have ever had came from Germany such as D.A.M. I only wish Shakespeare would make a telescopic Uglystik. You can’t brake an Ugly Stik.

Shimano eclipse 12 ft telescopic great rod handles snapper, kahawai, and stingrays. Whats your thoughts on this rod?

Hey Captain, You should check out Daiwa’s new telescopic releases. They blow all of these out of the water. The Megaforce is now Daiwa’s entry-level telescopic, followed by the Ninja, the Blazon, and the B.B.B. or the Triple B, which range from $50-300. The Blazon and Triple B are available in most actions/speeds and baitcasting models are available too. I haven’t tried the BBB, but I’ve tried most of the telescopic rods on this list. While the Blackhawk has the floating guides and makes most of the others on this list look like toys. The Daiwa’s take that to the next level. The other Daiwa offerings all have the floating guides, and they have rubber washers, so they don’t wear the tip as much as the Blackhawk.

Comments: This case is great! I've been to El Salto, a couple of times, and after the first trip, my rod worries went away knowing that everything will be fine. I carry 8 rods down but I think one could fit 12 rods, in this case, or more! It is large and roomy. You have to remove the reels then I wrap the rods in pairs making sure the tips of each rods do not extend past the butt end of the other rod, to protect it. After I get the 4 pairs wrapped, I bundle them all together. The first time, I bubble wrapped around the bundle in 3 places, to keep the rods centered inside the case. After that trip, I cut some 4" thick black speaker foam, cut a two inch hole out of the center and a slit to the center, as to open it up and slip it over my bundle of rods. I glued some Velcro to each side of the slit, which may not be needed, but it sure makes my rods very secure, inside of this awesome case. There may be better case out there, not sure, I've been very happy with this case and have no need to look further.

Comments:  I have had one of these rod cases for a couple of years and have never used it. I just got it out again, hoping to use it, and recalled what's wrong with it. It's heavy. It's made of heavy plastic, which could be good, but it is mostly heavy because it is built around the idea of possibly carrying long one piece rods. So, when you just want a case for carrying a couple of two piece rods, you have all the unneeded weight for allowing it to telescope. It is a total of three pieces. The handle is placed so as to have it balance when fully telescoped. When shortened to hold two piece rods, the handle is positioned so the case is annoyingly off balance. Thirdly, it should have a screw off cap. Instead it has a closed end. It requires you to put your rods into the outer case and slide the next two telescopes in on top of them without being able to see what is going on. Terrible design. I'm trying to decide right now whether to throw it into the recycling bin. The only reason I'm on this site right now is I'm trying to find a better case.

Travel fishing rods are made for anglers on the go. Wherever you end up, there are new waters to seek out, so the addition of a dedicated travel fishing rod to the arsenal makes sense for aspiring travel anglers. The problem for many years was the lack of quality rods to meet the carry-on restrictions for fishermen traveling on planes. Multi-piece rods were much less common and inferior to more conventional rods; they were also more likely to break.

Thankfully, advances in technology and design have changed the landscape of angling travel. Rod companies are now able to provide traveling anglers with quality options, and the best travel fishing rods fish like their one-piece counterparts.

How We Picked the Best Travel Fishing Rods

My first travel-to-fish trip happened when I was seven. We ventured north to fish for northern pike and bass in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. Since that first trip, my wanderlust has persisted, spanning three continents, five countries, eleven states, and three Canadian provinces. I’ve carried rods to all of those places via airline, bush plane, panga, train, car, taxi, subway and hiking boots. In between those adventures, I’ve spent a lot of time talking with fishing industry professionals about travel fishing rods and other assorted gear. Cumulatively, this distilled experience proves highly useful in evaluating travel fishing tackle. While writing this review, I considered the following attributes:

  • Fishing Performance—comparative to one-piece rods
  • Packability
  • Materials and Construction

Best Travel Fishing Rods: Reviews & Recommendations

Ugly Stik GX2 Travel Spinning Combo is the best budget and best combo travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): 5 feet (light power), 6 feet and 6 feet 6 inches (Both medium power)
  • Numbers of sections: 5 foot rod is 3 pieces; others are 4 pieces
  • Line Rating: Light: 4-10 pound; Medium: 6-15 pound
  • Strong, durable and sensitive graphite and fiberglass construction
  • More economical than buying individual components
  • Strong and durable Ugly Tuff stainless steel guides
  • Shakespeare four-bearing spinning reel, with double anodized aluminum spool
  • Cloth rod and reel travel bag offers only cosmetic protection; not suitable for checked luggage.

According to Shakespeare lore, the Ugly Stik received its now world-familiar moniker when a product management executive took one look at the first prototype blanks and said they were the ugliest he’d ever seen.

The most updated version is more aesthetically appealing, but it hasn’t lost its rugged durability or the signature clear tip segment. The Ugly Stik Travel Combo comes in three lengths and two power options (light and medium). Each rod is fitted with a solid Shakespeare four-bearing reel with oversized bail wire for added durability. And the entire combo is at a price point that won’t break the bank.

These travel outfits make a solid choice for those trips focused on activities other than angling where you just might be able to fit in a little fishing anyway. They also make excellent entry-level outfits for kids and fishing rods for beginners . From personal experience, I’ll also say that these rods can handle those unexpected trophies that have a knack for biting when you’re just helping the kids catch a few bluegills.

Abu Garcia IKE Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is the best travel fishing rod for bass.

  • Length(s): 7 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: Four pieces—butt section, midsection and two tip sections for increased versatility
  • Tip Sections: medium light—for 1/8 to 5/8 ounce lures and medium for 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures
  • Line Rating: medium light: 6-12 pound; medium: 8-14 pound
  • Two tip sections offers great versatility
  • Fishes like a one-piece rod
  • Excellent sensitivity
  • Doesn’t include a crush-proof case for checked luggage protection

Abu Garcia was smart to partner with Mike “Ike” Iaconelli in designing this rod. Twenty plus years as a bass tournament professional coupled with his additional experience as a city fishing enthusiast provided the ideal experiential foundation for crafting top notch travel fishing rods.

The Ike Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is an exceptional value and an incredibly versatile fishing tool. Quality components are a significant part of the winning formula. The rod blanks are constructed from 36-ton graphite and finished rods have stainless steel guides and a high quality reel seat. The use of a continuous graphite ferrule is key to allowing this rod to fish like a one-piece rod. If all of this isn’t enough, then add in the best feature—the versatility provided with interchangeable tips. This combination allows you to fish an extended range of lures and finesse baits. Anglers looking for a more powerful bass fishing tool should consider checking out the casting rod version .

G. Loomis Escape GLX Series is the best travel fishing rod for saltwater.

  • Length(s): 7 feet in two power options, medium-light and medium
  • Numbers of Sections: three
  • Line Rating: Medium-light: 6-12 pound; Medium: 10-17 pound
  • Multi-taper design offers a superior blend of durability and performance
  • Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides
  • High quality cork grip
  • Light weight
  • Difficult to find stock, at the moment

Very rarely will I say that a rod has the potential to enable a competent angler to catch more fish. The G. Loomis Escape GLX rods are an exception to this rule. Hands down, these are some of the finest fishing rods made today.

G. Loomis has been making fishing rods focused on performance since 1982. I bought my first GLX rod in 1999 and I still fish it today; I think that says a lot about both the quality and durability of the GLX line of rods. Loomis’ rod building expertise has led to superior travel rods that compromise nothing in a multi-piece design. Their proprietary Multi-taper Design process strengthens potential break points while reducing material application elsewhere. The result is strength and sensitivity. The Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides used on these rods are amazingly tough and the cork grip provides a comfortable feel over days, months and years of fishing.

These rods are amazingly lightweight, given their strength, durability and ability to subdue large saltwater fish. This lightness in hand translates to greater comfort over a long day of fishing. The last cast of the day feels as effortless as the first.

GLX Escape travel spinning rods are available in two models. The medium power model is what I consider the ideal saltwater rod, able to handle large inshore species such as permit and bull redfish. In freshwater, this rod will handle most of the salmonid species, bass and pike. The medium-light model is also a phenomenal light saltwater rod, ideal for small bonefish, puppy drum and schoolie stripers. This rod is also a great crossover rod, whether for large trout, shad or smallmouth bass.

KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rod is the best telescopic travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): Casting —7 models from 6 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet; Spinning—7 models from 6 feet, 6 inches to 8 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: All models are telescopic
  • Line Ratings: 6-25 pound, depending on the model
  • Multiple models for diversity and flexibility
  • Quality materials and construction
  • Quick assembly
  • Still not as good as quality multi-piece rods
  • Segments can loosen after significant casting/fishing time

Though I’m not a telescopic rod fan, I see the usefulness of the concept, and the KastKing BlackHawk II is the best telescopic rod I’ve seen. These rods are particularly well suited for anglers who need the added convenience provided by a telescopic rod and aren’t logging serious hours of fishing associated with dedicated travel fishing trips. In other words, they’re ideal for when you’re on vacation and, suddenly, you have an hour or two to go fishing.

KastKing has provided an outstanding array of options, in both casting and spinning rod models. This selection is a great service for potential customers who need to find rods to fit a wide variety of angling scenarios, as well as the inevitable personal preferences.

The BlackHawk II rods are built using KastKing KastFlex 24-Ton Carbon Matrix blanks, with a solid glass tip. Snug-Fit ferrules, stainless steel line guides, graphite reel seats and comfortable EVA handles are used to create a nicely finished rod.

Orvis Clearwater Travel Fly Rod

  • Length:  9 feet
  • Line Weight:  5
  • Action:  Medium-Fast
  • Pieces:  4
  • Warranty:  25-Year
  • A bit heavy

The Orvis Clearwater took home the best value award in our fly rod test last year and was a favorite among our group of editors and testers. For starters, the Clearwater is one of the more affordable fly rods on the market, and it can hold its own with the premium rods that often see a price tag north of a grand. This rod went head-to-head with all of the top-end models, and after a quick blind-casting test, most of our editors put the Clearwater ahead of our favorite high-end rods.

As for performance, the Clearwater throws tight loops and can reach almost as far as any other rod. It’s a bit cumbersome, and you might get tired after a full day on the water. Anglers can pick up a Clearwater rod in sizes ranging from 2-weight to 12-weight. So no matter what fish you enjoy chasing with a fly, there’s a Clearwater rod for you. And since this is a travel fishing rod story, it’s worth mentioning that the Clearwater is a four-piece rod and can be carried on any plane in a rod tube. —Ryan Chelius

Things to Consider Before Buying a Travel Fishing Rod

Travel fishing can be as exotic as a once-in-a-lifetime globetrotting adventure, or as simple as a subway trip to the city pond or lake. In both scenarios, a more compact, travel-friendly fishing outfit will make transit to the destination easier. Before buying a travel fishing rod, consider what species of fish you’re targeting, spatial limitations, mode of transport and the all important time versus money equation.

Target Species

What type or types of fish will you be chasing, and where will you be fishing? An ideal rod for panfish or trout will be outgunned and frustrating to use when targeting big stripers or redfish. Rods and their counterpart reels (meaning the reel you always use with that rod) may be great in freshwater but not up to the abuse they’ll endure in a marine environment. I like versatility in my gear but not to the point of compromising my overall enjoyment. To this end, I think it best to establish realistic expectations and fully understand what my travel rods can and cannot handle.

Spatial Limitations

The first leg of the journey is a commercial airline behemoth with spacious overhead compartments that will easily accommodate your travel rod case. But the final hop comes via a de Havilland Beaver where space is severely limited. Or, perhaps you’re hiking into the backcountry for a multi-day camping and fishing adventure. In each of these scenarios, spatial limitations are different, and in each case it’s important to identify how compact your travel rod (or rods) need to be. This is a question best asked and answered before you depart.

Mode of Transport

In a perfect world, my rods never leave my oversight when I travel to fish. But often that’s just not realistic. So, I opt to plan for the worst and hope for the best. I like when rods come with a crush-proof case. If they don’t, it’s best to invest in a specialized travel rod case that will accommodate the rod or rods you plan to take. When trips require multiple transfers, the added peace of mind alone merits the investment.

If carrying a rod or rods onto an airplane, I find out the airline’s maximum dimensions for carry-on items. If I have any doubt about carry-on options, I make sure the cased rod I’m traveling with will fit in my checked baggage.

Time versus Money

This is an important equation that has additional variability based on a person’s disposable income and priorities. I once commented to a guiding client that I thought everyone should have one area of life where they indulge themselves. His response was, “Why just one?”

Realistically though, most anglers need to evaluate how often, and for how long, they’re likely to use a travel rod, and then factor that into their decision about which rod is best for them. An angler who might, or might not, use the rod once a year on a family vacation will want a different rod from the fisherman or woman who embarks upon one or more dedicated destination fishing trips each year.

Q: Can I carry-on a fishing pole?

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), fishing rods can be carried on, as long as they meet the airline’s criteria for carry-on items. However, it’s best to always work with the specific airline you’ll be traveling with to fine-tune your carry-on planning. If you’re traveling internationally, be sure to also check with air carriers you’ll be flying with in the destination country or countries.  Adhere to their requirements, and your rod should remain in your hands from home to destination and back.

Q: How do you travel with a rod and reel?

I always want to travel with my rods in a hard, crush-proof case and my reels safely stowed in my carry-on fishing bag. Even if my travel rods are compact enough for airline carry-on, I still prefer to carry them in the protective hard case, as plans can sometimes change at the flight check-in. If I have to check the rods, at any point in the journey, I know they’ll be safe. Many people think about the flight process but don’t consider the auto travel on either end of the flight. In my experience, the transition points are when unprotected gear gets broken. Careful packing of your rods and reels extends the safety to these travel transition scenarios. In the “for what it’s worth” column, I’d rather arrive at a fishing destination without my clothes than my rods and reels. But happily this can be avoided by using a change of clothes as padding around your rods in the travel case. This way you arrive with your rods, reels and at least one spare outfit.

Q: Can you carry-on a 4-piece fly rod?

Yes, most conventional 4-piece fly rods will meet airline criteria for carry-on luggage. I’ve traveled with 4-piece, ten foot fly rods to Chile, Mexico, England and remote north western Canada. I’ve never had any difficulty carrying-on my fly rods. That being said, it’s still always best to check with the airline in-question in advance. If you’re working with an experienced fishing travel service, they can also provide their experience traveling to your destination. For additional thoughts on this topic, check out our in-depth breakdown of the best fly rods .

Q: Can I fly with fishing lures?

According to the TSA, fishing lures are defined as “sharp fishing tackle that may be considered dangerous.” They recommend sheathing or otherwise securing hooks; the lures should then be securely wrapped and packed in your checked baggage. Based on this information, any hooks, lures or flies in your carry-on could be confiscated. For anglers, the problem with this approach is the fear of arriving at a remote fishing destination with nothing to fish. To alleviate this concern, I pack a small selection of must-have flies or lures that I put in my carry-on bag—think of it as an emergency kit. I keep the selection small enough that I can accept the loss if it’s ever confiscated. The bulk of my fishing lures are packed safely in my checked bag and include duplicates of the essentials.

Q: What is the difference between a travel rod and a standard rod?

A travel fishing rod can break down into small sections or telescope into one small piece. A normal fishing rod is often one, two, or four pieces. This makes it a bit more difficult to travel with.

Q: Are travel rods worth it?

Having a fishing rod that can break down into small pieces is definitely worth it. You don’t necessarily need a “travel fishing rod,” but rather something that breaks down into three or four pieces so it’s easier to travel with.

Best Traveling Fishing Rods: Final Thoughts

Whether you’re embarking upon a bucket-list adventure fishing trip or hoping to get in a little fishing while traveling with the family, it all depends on your tackle getting to the destination unbroken and functional. That defines why travel rods have become so important for modern anglers, and the importance extends beyond airline travel. Try carrying a one-piece rod on a busy subway and you quickly realize the value of travel rods for close-to-home fishing.

Though many travel rods still fall short of their one-piece counterparts’ performance, advances in technologies and economies of scale have closed this gap. In some cases, the best travel fishing rods are indistinguishable from one or two-piece rods. To decide which travel rod is right for you, evaluate your target species, consider spatial limitations, mode of transportation and time versus money. Then, just add water and enjoy the fishing.
