Travel-Friendly Electric Shavers (Our 6 Top Picks)

If you need an electric shaver that’s compact enough to bring on your travels, this article is for you!

Table of Contents

Best Travel Friendly Electric Shavers

You’ve got a trip coming up, and you need an easy and convenient way to tame your stubble. What do you reach for?

If you shave with a safety razor , you could toss your shaving kit into your luggage. But that can take up a lot of space — and shaving with a safety razor isn’t always convenient — so unless you’re going away for at least a couple of weeks, you might want to consider another option.

That’s where electric travel shavers can come in handy. These devices are often maligned, but they serve the ultra-practical purpose of providing a simple and fast way to shave while on the go.

The only caveat is that most of these shavers can’t handle longer facial hair.

Since travel razors are built for quick trims, they’re best for guys who stay clean-shaven and only need to trim their stubble every day. But if you fall into that category, then it’s probably worth it to pick up a travel-friendly razor.

However, not all travel shavers are equal. That’s why I’ve picked out the 6 best electric travel shavers on the market.

Don’t have time to read the full article? Here are our top picks for the best travel-friendly electric shavers you can buy right now:

Philips - Norelco PQ208/40 Travel Electric Razor

Experience the ultimate in shaving precision with this rotary-type shaver, boasting independently floating heads and self-sharpening blades. This shaver is a reliable companion for your travel adventures, providing performance that surpasses the ordinary.

Panasonic - ES3831K Electric Razor for Men

Don't let its modest design and affordable price fool you—the Panasonic ES3831K delivers a shaving experience that rivals even the most high-end options on the market.

Wahl - Lifeproof Lithium Ion Foil Shaver

Designed to withstand the test of time, this remarkable razor is both waterproof and shockproof, ensuring durability that exceeds expectations.

The 6 Best Travel-Friendly Electric Shavers

These small but mighty razors offer a surprising degree of performance, and they’re easy to toss in your carry-on.

Philips Norelco PQ208/40

While its name doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, the Philips Norelco PQ208/40 is a great electric travel shaver.

Philips Norelco PQ208 40

This rotary-type shaver features independently floating heads with self-sharpening blades for a close shave. Two AA batteries provide up to an hour of shaving time.

It’s a mere 3.5 inches long, and while its shape is a little awkward, it’s still small enough to easily stuff into your luggage .

All around, it’s a utilitarian shaver that offers better-than-average performance for travel situations. It’s also respectably priced, selling for around $45.

Wahl Lifeproof Lithium Ion Foil Shaver

You might have heard of Wahl before — the company makes some of the most popular hair clippers used by barbers around the world.

Wahl Lifeproof Lithium Ion Foil Shaver

While it might not beat a barbershop experience, the Wahl Lifeproof Lithium Ion Foil Shaver means business. Both waterproof and shockproof, this razor is built to last.

It’s rechargeable with a 90-minute runtime, though it also has a quick charge option that provides five minutes of runtime with one minute of charging.

You can shave wet or dry with it, and the no-slip grip makes it easy to hold and maneuver.

It also has a pop-up precision trimmer that’s full-sized, which is an uncommon but welcome feature for a travel shaver.

At $70, the Lifeproof is a step up from the budget options on this list, but it’s worth considering if you’re after a travel shaver that can take a beating.

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

Braun helped to pioneer the development of the electric shaver in the 20th century, so it’s no surprise that the company makes some of the best shavers available today.

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

The M90 Mobile Shaver is Braun’s take on a travel-friendly razor. It’s extremely compact at around five inches long, so you can easily stuff it wherever you need to, and it’s almost perfectly palm-sized (assuming you have average hands).

The twist cap pulls double duty, serving as a handle extension when the razor is activated and protecting the foil when it’s not in use.

The M90 runs on two AA batteries that provide about an hour of shaving time, and it’s fully washable, so you can simply clean it under running water.

As a nice bonus, there’s an extendable hair trimmer for precision shaving.

For about $25, the M90 offers a solid way to stay clean-shaven while out and about.

The shave quality is decent, so while you won’t want to trim a full beard with this, it’s effective at erasing five o’clock shadow on a daily basis.

Panasonic ES3831K

The Panasonic ES3831K is a rather unassuming electric shaver, but it provides a level of functionality that belies both its form and its price point.

Panasonic ES3831K

The ES3831K uses a single-blade system that promises a closer shave, and it’s indeed quite good for a travel shaver.

The entire device is definitely travel-friendly at just 4.5 inches long, and the curved ergonomic design fits nicely in the hand.

It uses two AA batteries, supports wet and dry shaving, and can be rinsed under water (with optional help from the included cleaning brush).

You can pick one up for a little over $20, which is a very agreeable price for what you get.

Yoose Mini Rotary Shaver

It’s hard to say for certain, but the Yoose Mini Rotary Shaver might be the most compact electric travel shaver out there, measuring just 2.5 inches long.

Yoose Mini Rotary Shaver

It’s also surprisingly feature-packed considering its diminutive size. The dual floating blades can be used to shave wet or dry, and a single button controls the power and a travel lock mode.

The rechargeable USB-C battery has a 60-minute runtime, and the fast charging option gives you a full shave with a three-minute charge.

It’s 100% waterproof with a rating of IPX7, so you can safely shave in the shower to save even more time.

Last but not least, the Yoose also comes with a travel case for easy storage (but you can just as easily tuck it away in a bag).

It might seem a bit pricey at $90, but if you want to save every possible square inch of packing space and want a shaver that performs well, the Yoose is worth serious consideration.

BaBylissPRO SILVERFX FX01 Single Foil Shaver

Like Wahl, BaBylissPRO makes professional-caliber tools used by barbers and stylists.

BaBylissPRO SILVERFX FX01 Single Foil Shaver

The FX01 Single Foil Shaver is one of the company’s most affordable shavers, and it packs quite a punch. It features a hypoallergenic gold foil, an auto-shutoff cover, and a powerful rotary motor.

Most impressively, it boasts a runtime of up to 5 hours on two AA batteries. That’s a lot of shaves — you can pop fresh batteries in and forget about it for months.

The extended runtime and compact size make the FX01 a great choice for a travel-friendly shaver. You can find one for about $55 on Amazon.

Travel-Friendly Shaver FAQs

Wondering about the nitty gritty of traveling with a razor? Here are a few common questions answered:

Does the TSA allow electric razors in carry-on?

As per the TSA website , you are allowed to bring electric razors in both your checked and carry-on bags .

What is the best portable electric razor?

Like everything else, there’s no one best option. That said, if you’re going for pure portability, the Yoose Mini is your best bet.

How do I protect my razor when traveling?

For best results, pack your razor either in its own travel case or a dedicated compartment in your luggage away from any heavy or hard objects. When the razor is off, make sure its guard or cap is on.

Unless you want to carry an entire shaving kit in your bags, you’re probably best off investing in one of these travel-friendly electric shavers.

As a plus, these shavers also make good backup razors for when you’re running extra late (or feeling extra tired) and just want to get a fast shave done without thinking.

Just make sure you’re stocked up on a couple of essential shaving products , and you’ll be good to go.

The Best Electric Razor

The four best electric razors shown side by side.

By Ben Popken and Dan Koeppel

For an ultra-efficient, nick-free shave, an electric razor is a worthy tool for your dopp kit . But only a truly great electric shaver guarantees results as close to a manual shave as you can get without breaking the bank, loading you down with unnecessary features, or creating an annoying experience.

To greet the day with a fresh face, we recommend the Braun Series 8 foil electric shaver. It shaves closely, has a long-lasting battery, offers an ergonomic design, works wet or dry, and comes with a built-in trimmer that’s actually functional. It’s also packaged with the accessories that we think most people appreciate, all for a reasonable price.

Everything we recommend

tesco travel razor

Braun Series 8 8577cc

The best electric razor for most faces.

This solid, pivot-head foil electric razor consistently provides a close, clean, and comfortable shave. It’s fast and easy to use and maintain, and it comes with all the accessories you might want.

Remington F5-5800

Good performance for the price.

This model gives a close-enough facial shave that’s superior to the results from other budget foil shavers. But it underperforms on the neck, and the build and grip are not as sophisticated as on our other picks.

The closest rotary shave.

The best rotary shaver we tested, this model provides a close and smooth cut and comes with a variety of useful accessories.

How we picked

We ranked models according to shave closeness and the number of passes required to achieve our ideal shave.

We gave extra points for wet/dry use, longer battery life, and a functional built-in trimmer.

Cleaning tools and a travel kit are nice but not strictly necessary.

We prioritized electric razors with widely available replacement foils and other parts.

We love the reliable and efficient shave of the Braun Series 8 electric razor, which can work wet or dry. The 8577cc version delivers an especially close electric shave in comparison with much of the competition. It has a 60-minute battery, features an ergonomic grip and a built-in trimmer, and comes with all the key accessories, including a travel case that also charges the razor, a cleaning center, and a cleaning brush. Although no electric razor can cut as close or come in as compact and quiet a package as a manual razor , the Series 8 performed the best relative to similarly priced electric razors we tested. Braun says that this model is designed to last up to seven years.

The wet/dry Braun Series 9 Pro boasts what the company says is beard-sensing technology that increases the shaver’s power when it detects thicker hair and eases off when it runs over everyday stubble. It has four shaving elements, two of which are foils and two of which are trimmers. One of the trimmers directs and cuts hairs growing in different directions, while the other lifts and cuts flat-lying hairs and is coated in gold-colored titanium nitride for durability and anti-corrosiveness. We found the Series 9 Pro’s shave to be very close and gentle, and in our testing it matched its claim of being effective at mowing through a seven-day beard. Like the 8577cc, the 9477cc version in this series comes with a charging travel case.

For around a fifth of the price of our top pick, the Remington F5-5800 offers a solid foil-based shave. It isn’t pretty or sleek, but it gets the job done, delivering a shave in our tests that was the closest among the $60-or-less options we tried. The shaving mechanism grabs the skin more roughly in comparison with higher-end models, leaving you with extra irritation and redness. In addition, the build isn’t as sophisticated as that of other shavers—one of our testers said he felt like it might “fly apart any minute.” But if you’re on a budget, and an electric razor that produces decent results is what you need, this is a good one to grab.

Traditionally, rotary shavers haven’t cut as close as foil models. But this stalk-like, grippable rotary shaver beat several foil shavers with its “lift and cut” system. The wet/dry Philips Norelco Shaver 9500 is an upgrade over our previous rotary pick, the discontinued Shaver 9300, and includes a built-in trimmer and a cleaning station. It also has some “advanced” electronic features designed to train you to improve your shaving technique; you can either take heed of them or ignore them.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: braun series 8, upgrade pick: braun series 9 pro, budget pick: remington f5-5800, also great: philips norelco shaver 9500, other good electric razors, the competition.

Ben Popken is the former editor of The Consumerist, a consumer-empowerment website and platform started at Gawker and acquired by Consumer Reports. He was a business reporter at NBC News national, online and on-air, for 10 years and has reported on nearly everything on the shelf and off the charts when it comes to consumer, business, and economic news. His award-winning investigation into EpiPen price spikes led to the drugmaker Mylan’s congressional hearings, fines, and price drops.

Dan Koeppel is a razor enthusiast and loves playing with both manual and electric razors. In the time he has been writing about razors for Wirecutter—since 2015—he has personally tested more than 30 models, including the full lines from Braun, Panasonic, and Philips Norelco, as well as one-off brands and used shavers (don’t do it!) that he found in the deepest, darkest corners of eBay.

Let’s just get this out of the way: It’s physically impossible for an electric razor to shave as close as a manual razor . A blade that moves on or near the skin is simply closer than a whirring motor located behind a serrated gate. So if absolute closeness is your highest priority, you’re better off with a manual razor.

But there are a couple of situations in which you might opt for an electric razor. If you’re susceptible to nicks and cuts or want to avoid them entirely, an electric razor can give you a clean, safe shave. This factor can make electric razors a better choice over a manual model for people with certain disabilities or injuries.

If you don't have easy access to water, shaving cream, or electricity, such as when you’re traveling or going through a power outage, a battery-powered electric razor can also be preferable.

If you want to trim facial hair (not remove it), see Wirecutter’s review of beard trimmers . For trimming body hair, we recommend a model that’s better for grooming below the neck.

Three foil shavers and one rotary, shown side by side.

The main job of a razor is to give you a close, comfortable, long-lasting shave. Closeness of the shave was therefore our most important metric: Could you feel or see the stubble after the shave?

Wirecutter has reviewed electric razors since 2015, and in that time our writers have tested more than 20 different models, including some specialty models that co-author Dan Koeppel ordered on eBay or handled in one of the last remaining brick-and-mortar stores dedicated to powered shaving tools . In 2023 and 2024, we tested 10 razors, comparing our existing picks with newer models.

Then we subjected the razors to months of use and testing by three people with different facial-hair textures—including an associate professor of dermatology—to winnow the contenders down to a handful of select choices. Chiefly we looked for a close shave; we were able to toss out many razors right away due to an insufficiently close shave. Sometimes testers shaved one side of their face with one razor and the other side with another to compare closeness and comfort. (We did not test these devices on body or head hair.)

From there our panel of testers reviewed the semifinalists as part of their daily routine and rated them according to closeness of shave, irritation, ergonomics, maneuverability, and ease of cleaning. We also considered price and battery life as we made our final picks.

Our pick for best electric razor, the Braun Series 8.

The Braun Series 8 electric razor offers a cleaner, closer, more comfortable shave than similar shavers in its price range, and it’s nearly as good as many razors that cost much more. It has a built-in trimmer and comes with a travel case, a cleaning station, and a cleaning brush. It performs well wet or dry, isn’t overly loud, and offers good ergonomics and grip. It’s a great razor.

It cuts hair cleanly and closely. Our testers said they found this razor “easily the best” they tested. It had “no shaving irritation” and delivered “a nice, smooth shave.” You can quickly move the shaver over your face and get close results, without needing to do several passes. Testers found that the Series 8 also did well at cleaning up the flat-lying hairs on their necks, often a trouble spot for electric shavers. Another upgrade that the Series 8 features over Braun’s lower-series models is the addition of four thin metal rods at the corners of the trimmers that help stretch and smooth the skin prior to the razor cutting the hairs.

The Braun Series 7, 8 and 9 all share a similar body chassis and cutting block. And in our tests, all the Braun models stood above the pack in closeness and comfort.

View of the foil shaver head of the Braun Series 8 electric razor.

Its head can stay fixed at an angle for shaving certain parts of the face. In the Series 8 and above, Braun has introduced a head-locking feature that fixes the head angle in one of five positions. This is intended “to shave hard-to-reach areas (e.g. under the nose),” according to the manual. We found that locking the head delivered a closer shave under the chin and on the neck, a key area where many electric shavers especially fall short in comparison with a manual razor. The lock makes it easier to maintain constant and full contact between the foils and your skin when you’re navigating these angled terrains—more contact, more cutting, closer shave. Simply push up on the large oval button above the power button to go between ratcheting lock mode and “freestyle.”

The included cleaning station is effective, if somewhat wasteful. All of the high-end Braun shavers are available with a SmartCare Center cleaning station. The station is pretty neat: You insert the razor, and it cleans, lubricates, dries, and recharges. It does so with an alcohol-based solution that comes in a replaceable cartridge that slots in the bottom. These cartridges sell for about $6 each and can last up to a couple of months. Their cost can add up, but you have a few ways to extend their life or reduce their cost, such as removing the cartridge after use for third-party or DIY (rather than manufacturer-recommended) solution refills.

A Braun Series 8 electric razor in its cleaning station, next to a refill cartridge, a cleaning brush, and the travel case.

The cleaning station is a bit bulky overall and can take up a lot of counter space, especially in small or shared bathrooms. It also makes a lot of noise and goes on for a while. If you typically get up before a partner or housemate and always try to keep the noise down in the morning, this cleaning station may not be the way to go if you’re in the habit of cleaning your razor right after you shave. (You could instead just set the razor to clean itself at night when you brush your teeth.)

It’s the best value in a beloved shaver lineup. We compared the Series 7 and 8 in our most recent round of testing. The two were very similar, but overall our testers said that the Series 8 ranked far ahead in closeness. And the “ride” of the pivoting head over our testers’ faces was one of the smoothest among all the razors we tried. Our first sensation on using it was that it was like shaving with a stick of butter mounted on a flashlight! (This after favoring a manual razor for pretty much our entire adult lives.)

You should replace the foils on this model every 18 months. A new replacement head runs about $60.

Braun’s models sport grippy rubber on the back that helps you get a firm grasp on the razor. It tends to pick up a bit of facial-hair dust, but you can easily rinse it.

Braun backs all of its shavers with a two-year warranty covering everything except the foil and cutting block.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The built-in trimmer doesn’t get as close in comparison with a standalone trimmer. And it’s definitely no match for a blade-based razor in that regard. If you have a difficult beard line to maintain, this device may not be sufficient as your all-in-one.

The Series 8 is 0.7 ounce heavier than the Series 7 and has a wider body. Some testers were more sensitive to a shaver’s grip feel and heft. Whether heavier or lighter is better comes down to personal preference.

The Series 8 uses a head that pivots vertically, versus the side-to-side flexibility of the Series 7. However, the blades themselves have lateral movement. People with more contoured faces or those who often have to go back over spots may find this design to be a drawback.

You may not want the cleaning station. Part of the premium aspect of some electric-razor packages is their inclusion of cleaning stations and travel cases. But some of our testers found that the cleaning stations took up too much bathroom counter space—in a shared, single-sink bathroom, forget it. For the environmentally conscious, all the extra plastic and material can be a turnoff, too. You can simply opt to get a version of the razor without the cleaning contraption and charging case (such as the Braun Series 8 8417s ), saving about $100.

The Series 8’s battery life on a full charge is around 60 minutes. All of the Braun models have some kind of “sleep mode” where if you haven’t used yours for a while it will register as out of battery when you grab it—but once you plug it into a charger for a few seconds, it’s suddenly powered up.

A Braun Series 9 Pro electric razor, our upgrade pick for best electric razor.

The Braun Series 9 Pro takes the Series 8 and adds a two-part titanium-coated trimmer. One, Braun says, is a lift-and-cut trimmer that can cut flat-lying hair; the second is a direct-and-cut trimmer that can cut hair growing in different directions. This model also upgrades our top pick’s skin-protecting metal rod to a full bar across the entire cassette head that helps smooth and stretch the skin before facial hairs enter the shaver’s cutting elements.

The Series 9 Pro is designed to be able to handle a seven-day beard with ease, and in our testing it lived up to the claim. It smoothly plowed through a full-growth, weeklong beard without uncomfortable snags, pulls, or catches.

If you are a daily shaver and keep yourself fairly baby-faced, the marginal benefit of the Series 9 Pro isn’t quite worth the cost increase. Still, in our experience, the Series 9 Pro’s shave definitely felt closer and more comfortable than what we got from the Series 8 or Series 7, and its results were more velvety and smooth than those of all the other razors we tested.

View of the foil shaver head of a Braun Series 9 Pro electric razor.

Braun’s addition of the titanium blades on this razor parallels the approach of the Panasonic ARC6 , without going quite so overboard. (That model starts to feel like an electric version of an iconic Onion op-ed .)

Versions of the Series 9 Pro also come packaged with a hard-shell traveling case that recharges your razor. The fully loaded version, with the PowerCase and a cleaning station, typically goes for around $380. But you can also get it with a standard travel case and the cleaning station for about $80 less.

Replacement heads for the Series 9 shavers are more expensive than our pick’s, generally running about $50 to $70 depending on whether it’s for the Series 9 or the Series 9 Pro, versus the usual $60 for a Series 8 head. Typically, any replacement head within a given Braun shaver series will fit most shavers in that lineup, but iterative product differences within the lines can throw this off. Your best option is to confirm your product-type number on Braun’s service website to make sure that you buy the right head.

Like our top pick, and all Braun shavers, the Series 9 Pro is warrantied for two years .

The Remington F5-5800, our budget pick electric razor.

The Remington 5F-5800 uses a head design similar to that of the Braun razors, with two cutting foils bisected by a lift-and-cut trimming bar. In our tests, the performance was perfectly adequate relative to the price—and it’s better than what we’ve gotten from all the other options under $100 we’ve tried.

The shave was fairly close and even. However, the 5F-5800 felt more aggressive on the face, a bit like it was nibbling into the skin, and it generated more redness than other shavers.

View of the foil shaver head of a Remington 5F-5800 electric razor.

The head is on a vertical pivot, and each of the three cutting implements can independently flex on the horizontal axis.

Remington bills the shaver as being for dry use only, but it is actually waterproof. This makes cleaning easier: You can simply remove the head by grasping the two black, ridged areas and pull upward to expose the cutting blades, and then run it under water.

One nice feature that is a bit rare is that this shaver can work both cordless and plugged in. This flexibility can come in handy if you’ve forgotten to recharge the shaver and need to clean up at the last minute. When it’s uncorded, the battery life is a solid 60 minutes.

This shaver feels a bit wide, and except for some slight divots for the thumb and index finger, it doesn’t offer much to get a grip on. Despite feeling “heavy duty,” according to one tester, it’s “too bulky for a comfortable grip,” according to another.

The 5F-5800 sports a touch-up trimming bar on the back. Like all built-in trimmers on electric razors, it’s fine for catching stray hairs and cleaning up sideburns. But if you want to maintain a sharp beard line, you should get a specialized device.

This model was also by far the loudest of all the razors we tested, which, in light of the bargain price, is a flaw but not a dealbreaker.

The 5F-5800 comes with a two-year warranty (PDF) .

The also great Philips Norelco Shaver 9500 electric razor.

The Philips Norelco Shaver 9500 is the best rotary shaver we’ve tested. The shave is close, smooth, and comfortable. It can work wet or dry.

The general consensus, and our conclusion from testing, is that rotary shavers, in general, don’t cut as close as foil shavers. But some people prefer one over the other, and if one kind causes trouble, you can give the other kind a shot.

The Shaver 9500’s shaving head consists of a triad of rotary cutters, each of which has two rows of concentric circular “lift and cut” blades. It lagged slightly in getting the lying flat hairs at the base of the neck, but it snagged them after a few additional passes.

The cutters can hinge from left to right and also sit on a flexible platform, which may assist the shaver in conforming to the angles of your face. The design has an overall larger surface area in comparison with a foil cutter, and people with thick, coarse, or unruly facial hair may find that they prefer a rotary model. But there is to some degree the sensation of shaving yourself with the business end of one of Doctor Octopus’s prehensile metal arms .

View of the rotary shaver head of the Philips Norelco Shaver 9500 electric razor.

In comparison with other shavers, the body is more narrow and stalk-like. The grip is good, thanks to a rubber casing with a few ridges toward the top.

This shaver is capable of wet or dry shaves and can work in the shower. It has a 60-minute running time on a full charge.

The Shaver 9500 sports a few upgrades in comparison with our previous rotary pick, the Philips Norelco Shaver 9300, which has been discontinued. The trimmer is now on the back rather than being a separate attachment. The shaver also comes with an updated cleaning station.

In addition, it has a few bells and whistles that, if frivolous, at least don’t interfere with performance. For one thing, it boasts a light-up pressure sensor. Pressing too hard on an electric razor can lead to skin irritation, while moving along too lightly means you don’t get much of a shave. So the Shaver 9500 lights up green under the head if you’re pressing just the right amount, blue if your pressure is too light, and orange if you’re pressing too hard.

The indicator screen is an OLED display and shows smooth animations to indicate battery life and travel lock, among other things. These are nice but not strictly necessary features.

You can also pair the razor to an iPhone or Android phone to track your shaves and get real-time feedback on your shaving technique in terms of pressure, motion, and length of shave. People who are relatively new to shaving and those who like to track everything digitally may enjoy these features, but we found the color-coded pressure-indicator light on the shaver itself to be sufficient. Having a connected device also brings up inevitable privacy considerations: Note that the app requires registration and an email address, and the privacy policy says that Philips may share your data with third parties.

The Shaver 9500 comes with a two-year warranty .

If you want a lighter-weight electric razor and are okay with more of a learning curve: Consider the Andis ProFoil 17150 Lithium Titanium Foil Shaver . This close-cutting, dual titanium, rectangular foil shaver, geared for the barber and stylist market, is competitive with the beloved Wahl 5-Star Shaver/Shaper . The wider holes on the thin foil feed in even more hair, closer to the blade, to achieve an especially close shave. The degree of closeness and this model’s ability to tackle the neck makes it in many ways a superior choice in comparison with our picks. However, unlike our picks it is not waterproof, and it is warrantied for only one year, whereas all of our picks are covered for two.

This is not a comprehensive list of all the shavers we’ve considered. It includes only models we’ve tested that are still available.

The Braun Series 7 was our previous pick and remains an excellent razor that provides a close, smooth shave. Our testers praised its “slender profile” and good grip feel. However, compared with the results from our top pick, the Series 8 , the shave was noticeably less close and smooth. The Series 7 also has a narrower trimming bar than the Series 8, a flexible head rather than a fixed pivot, and no pop-up trimmer. Overall our testers found that the Series 8 shavers performed a touch better and were, therefore, well worth the additional investment.

The series at the lower end of Braun’s foil shaving line—the Series 5 and Series 6 —each performed fine in our testing, and with a bit more work and time they eventually gave the same shave as the Series 8. But neither outperformed our budget pick, the Remington F5-5800 .

The Bevel Electric Shaver is geared toward people with short, wiry facial hair and prone to razor bumps. As this irritation arises from hairs cut short curving back into the skin, the Bevel’s blades are set farther back (0.3 mm) than is typical. But our testers found that it didn’t cut close enough to be effective.

The Panasonic ARC6 has four foils and two titanium-coated long-and-tricky-hair-capturing trimmers and beard-sensing technology. It didn’t cut closer than any of the Braun models, and its chunky, square head and elevated price were a turnoff.

We tried Philips Norelco’s lower-end rotary models but determined that the company’s 9000 series performed better and was so closely priced that it was a better buy for most people. In our experience, the 4000-series razor we tried didn’t shave closely enough to be worth the bargain price. However, one member of our test panel has been using a 4000-series model for years, and they still love it, even after trying much more expensive models.

The Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face is a razor-blade-handled device that claims to “trim, edge, and shave any length of hair effortlessly.” But the shave wasn’t very close in our experience—our testers still had pronounced stubble after using it. The First Shave version of this device is a fine choice for novices still getting the hang of bringing whirring blades to their faces. And our beard trimmer testers have found that the Face + Body version is excellent for fine detail work.

The SweetLF SWS7105 is a lightweight rotary razor that piqued our curiosity because it was a top-ranked best seller on Amazon at the time of our research. If you love that style of shave and are happy to save $20 in exchange for a cheaper build, give this model a look. Our testers found it to be the “quietest,” but its grip felt “cheap and slippery.”

The Wahl 5-Star Shaver/Shaper is a professional-grade razor marketed primarily toward barbers for “bump free shaving.” It gets very close and is comparable to the Andis ProFoil 17150 ; both have two sets of gold-colored foils and are lightweight and rectangular. The Wahl razor fell short in dealing with a few flat-lying hairs on the neck, and we found it nearly impossible to remove them even with repeated passes and skin stretching.

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver

  • Battery Operated
  • 5.2” x 3.1” x 1.5”

This mobile shaving machine packs in a fantastic combination of features we’ve come to expect from the best travel razors on the market. It’s an incredibly lightweight and compact option, and you can wash the entire razor underwater.

Two AA batteries last for nearly two hours, ensuring you have plenty of time to go over everything twice. If you’re concerned about every inch of space in your luggage, this mobile shaver has maximized every inch of the device to provide an excellent shave without being overweight.

Braun capped things off with a protective cap and travel lock to ensure everything stays together while in transit. All these features are highlighted by the relatively low price point on this offering, making the M90 an excellent companion on any trip.

Remington TF70CDN Travel Shaver

  • 2.4” x 3.2” x 4.3”

Slim enough to fit into your pocket and packed with enough technology to make any shave easier, this budget battery-operated shaver provides a plethora of high-quality features you wouldn’t expect at this affordable price.

The foil shaver has two separate blades for more skin contact, and high-quality steel will get the job done right the first time. Inside the sleek four inch packaging, you’ll have everything you need for 40 minutes of quality shaving, including a cleaning brush, travel lock, and head cap.

The blade doesn’t have any features that seek to redefine the industry. Instead, Remington has provided everything you need out of a travel razor, and kept costs down to a staggering level that qualifies this razor for a spot on our list of the best travel razors.

Panasonic Mens Shaver For Travel

  • 3.9” x 2.7” x 1.1”

Panasonic has crafted a unique men’s travel razor with this tiny box of shaving power. The device packs easily, barely larger than a cigarette box. Once you take the lid off, this powerful tool uses a single foil blade for quick shaves on the go.

This shaver was initially designed for use in Japan before Amazon opened up opportunities worldwide, and the design embodies the space-saving technology Japan has excelled at developing.

The razor is known to be slightly unwieldy and loud when in operation, as Panasonic put all the emphasis of this product on lightweight performance. If you’re looking for the smallest possible razor that can get the job done, this shaver will fit into the luggage of any size.

Phisco Electric USB Shaver

  • 14.4 Ounces
  • 6.1” x 2.3” x 2.5”

Phisco’s offering takes its place as one of the best razors for traveling, thanks to the focus the shaver puts on the details. The razor ships with a protective case and cleaning brush. You’ll have everything you need to take this option with you on day one.

The shaver wields four directional heads for a 3D rotary shave, which provides a pretty luxurious shave for a travel razor. The extra oomph brought on by the blades adds on a splash of weight, but if you’re more concerned with your shave than the size of your razor, this shaver is about as fancy as you can get on the road.

An LED screen lets you constantly keep tabs on the battery level and quickly initiate a travel lock to prevent the shaver from turning on in transit. Our favorite USB chargeable razor is a high-class portable shaver option at an affordable price.

MANSCAPED Electric Shaver

  • 10” x 6” x 5”

A multifunctional option built to shave the whole body, MANSCAPED’s electric razer provides everything you need to stay groomed while on the road. If you’re looking to trim areas beyond your face, this electric shaver has body-friendly design features that provide a smooth shave everywhere.

Its rapid charging dock will provide a full charge in under an hour, and that charge will last for an hour and a half of shaving time. The thin razor weighs a bit more than other options on this list, but it’s still lightweight, and the extra ounces allow the user to feel more control while trimming.

The shaver is waterproof down to the rustproof blades, and each razor has been tested to function in various conditions. The most expensive razor on our list has a high-quality build and testing process combined with the ability to shave more to justify the higher price point.

The most expensive Electric Shaver on our list has a lot to prove to justify the price, but Panasonic has gone the extra mile in implementing a high-quality design to a portable razor in this product. The electric razor is not much bigger than a typical disposable razor, but is packed full of technology to provide the closest shave possible on the road.

An LED screen keeps you updated on the blade’s conditions, and the cordless charge lasts for two hours of shaving. Two different motors vibrate the edges up and down practically simultaneously.

A fully-pivoting head and angled blade allow you to reach anywhere with ease in a fluid motion. Four different stainless steel blades work together to provide a closer shave and reduce overall shaving time. If you’re expecting to shave daily on the road or travel often, the features built into this machine will save you time and money in the long run.

Philips Norelco PQ208 40 Electric Travel Razor

  • 3.5” x 2” x 1.0”

This slim razor can fit inside your shirt pocket if you’re looking to travel extra light. Two AA batteries will provide an hour of shave time, and two self-sharpening blades are always ready for a close shave.

The rotary blades provide an easy shave on the go, gentle enough to use without prepping your face for a blade if you need a quick cut. Philips Norelco ensured the two blades work independently of each other, which will let the blade work better with the unique contours of your face.

Everything you need to clean and store the product comes with your razor, and the included cleaning brush is built to work with this specific head to make cleaning and shaving easy, no matter where you are.

Panasonic Es3832K Electric Travel Razor

  • 2.2” x 4.3” x 6.6”

If you’re looking for a simplistic razor that travels without extra considerations, this affordable travel razor fits into any luggage and promises a great shave. Hypoallergenic blades are great for sensitive skin, and a unique blade casing adjusts to your face as you go along. The 8,500 RPM motor allows the blades to pull well above their weight.

This blade can be used in the shower or dry and comes with a foil hair trap that will make cleaning up after your shave a bit easier. Two AA batteries will last for your entire trip, and the razor built for travel ships with a cap and pouch to keep everything tidy until it’s time to trim.

An affordable, convenient option, the blades on this machine are permanent installations that the user can’t replace. If you need a quick solution to travel shaving woes, the small size and powerful blades will keep your face clean on your next business trip.

MAX T 3D Rotary Shaver

  • 6” x 2.4” x 2.4”

Max made sure to pack everything they could into this 6-inch rotary razor capable of wet and dry shaves. The razor holds a charge for months, allowing you to potentially leave the charger at home for shorter trips.

You can sort through different trimming options without changing out the blades, and a pop-up trimer allows you to precisely cut hard-to-reach areas. The razors’ tech features let it travel safely, and the durable build materials ensure it will get to your final destination in one piece.

A high-speed motor powers three quiet blades to provide a shaving experience similar to what you’d be used to at home, no matter where you are. This razor was built for comfort, but the slim size and long battery life of the rotary blades have allowed it to work well for travelers.

All Purpose Gillette Styler

  • 1.2” x 4.13” x 7.8”

We round out our list of travel shaver options with an old-school style razor from Gillette that provides opportunities. The style works on one AA battery for months, and the package ships with a trimmer and edger tool to allow this small-sized blade to do more.

Just a small size step up from a conventional disposable razor, the styler’s unique usage of clipper guards allows more versatility out of your shaver. It also easily fits into Gillette’s refill razors, so you won’t have to buy a whole new system when the blade gets dull.

Keeping groomed wherever the journey takes you doesn’t have to be complicated. The 3-in-1 system gives you the options you need, and the slim design adds on nothing more.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

As you can see, every one of the travel shavers on our list specializes in a particular aspect of the experience. 21st-century shavers have a wealth of options in their hands. Travel shavers come in various shapes and sizes. Here are some factors to consider when deciding which razor is best for your next trip.

 Foil or Rotary?

The two main travel razor blade types compete for consumer’s attention by focusing on different applications.

Foil shavers get closer to your skin, and the right foil blade is easy to shave in straight lines. If you’ve mapped out your facial hair and need to make precise movements to keep everything together, a multiple-blade foil shaver will deliver.

Rotary blades are the easier-to-use option. The circular blades better meld with the shape of your face, ensuring a more leisurely experience on your skin. They sacrifice detail to bring a quicker, everyday shave that reduces thick beards to stubble.

If you want the most detailed shave possible, stick to a foil blade. If you wish to get the job done without discomfort, a Rotary shaver will make it quick and easy.

 Rechargeable vs. Battery Powered

To choose between rechargeable and battery-powered razor choices, look towards the destinations in which you’ll be taking your shaver.

A rechargeable razor eliminates the need to search for batteries in the odd corners of the earth, but it doesn’t make the process pain-free. You’ll have to check various factors, including socket size and voltage type, to be sure you can charge your razor, and the cords can take up valuable luggage space.

Battery Powered Razors are perfect for quicker trips, as you won’t even have to worry about bringing along extra batteries. The motors on these razors can’t provide the maximum thrust as a charged razor, and they are also known to break down easier as time goes on.  Note that lithium batteries are also BAD for the environment.

Other Considerations

The Broke Backpackers favorite razors go above and beyond the call of duty. There are plenty of travel shavers on the market that provide a great shave. Some models have incorporated these extra features to stand out in the crowd.

Every detail matters when you’re traveling. There’s no way to guarantee things won’t get a bit wet once you reach your final destination. When you finally arrive, you may want to hop straight into the shower and have a shave.

Some travel razors with high IP ratings can be submerged underwater for minutes at a time, while others can’t even get wet.

Travel lock

This simple feature protects your razorblade from accidentally turning on during transit. A travel lock ensures that the blade won’t turn on if something presses into the power button.

There’s nothing worse than getting to your final destination and realizing your fully-charged shaver died after running all day.

If you’re out of control over how your luggage is handled or are known to be a bit clumsy when it comes to bag transportation, engage your travel lock to keep your razor off.

Can you take a shaver as a carry-on?

Note that carry on standards do vary . However the fine folks at the TSA have allowed most types of travel razors in your checked bag or your carry-on. Loose safety or straight razors are the only razors not allowed to board the plane with you. You can still bring the casing, but the razorblade will have to stay in your checked bags.

All other varieties of shavers, including the travel blades on this list, are fit to fly alongside you.

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What is the best battery operated shaver?

Our overall favorite battery shaver is the Braun M90 Mobile Shaver . This mobile shaving machine packs in a fantastic combination of features we’ve come to expect from the best travel razors on the market. It’s an incredibly lightweight and compact option.

Can I take travel shavers on an airplane?

Yes you can, as long as the blades aren’t too long. A rotary shaver won’t cause any troubles. But it’s best to double-check with your airline beforehand.

What’s the best whole body travel shaver?

If you’re looking for a full-body shaver, the MANSCAPED Electric Shaver should be your go-to. It’s insanely easy to handle, chargable and super light. This electric shaver has body-friendly design features that provide a smooth shave everywhere.

What’s the best rotary shaver?

The MAX-T 3D Rotary Shaver might be a bit more expensive, but it’s absolutely worth your money. It’s chargable and one full charge can last up to a month.

Braun M90 Review: A Solid Travel Shaver

Photo of author

Review Summary

Pros: AA battery powered, solid build quality, clever design features, travel lock, waterproof, inexpensive, integrated popup trimmer, versatile and lightweight, decent performance on short hairs

Cons: shaving takes a long time, works best for shaving short stubble, not recommended for heavy beards or long hairs, not as compact as other travel shavers, no travel case, not the most comfortable shaving experience, limited use of the popup trimmer

Our Rating:

[4 out of 5 stars]

Buy the Braun M90

The M90 is probably the most popular model from Braun’s line of mobile shavers.

The portability, clever design features, and affordable price make it a very compelling option for shaving on the go.

Let’s see how it performs in the real world in our Braun M90 review.

Table of Contents

Features overview

Build quality and ergonomics, battery life, cleaning and maintenance, shaving performance, included accessories, replacement parts availability, wrapup — who should buy the braun m90, alternative shavers.

The Braun M90 is a single-foil electric shaver powered by two AA batteries.

This is a common approach for a mobile shaver as there’s no need to carry a charging cord and AA batteries are cheap and readily available.

In my opinion, a USB port would be ideal, but we’re yet to see them on mainstream electric shavers.

The razor is waterproof for easy cleaning under running water and you can also use it in the shower with shaving cream/gel.

The M90 also features a cleverly integrated protective cap, a pop-up trimmer and a cleaning brush. We’ll talk more about each of them in the next section.

The Braun M90 mobile shaver is entirely made of plastic, with no rubberized surfaces.

The matte finish does provide a decent amount of grip though.

The color scheme features a dark blue for the body of the razor and light grey for the protective cap and the plastic frame of the foil.

Braun M90 held in hand

The build quality is very good for a razor in this price range and it’s probably my favorite part about the M90.

It feels rock-solid, the plastic doesn’t flex or make any cracking noises even when serious pressure is applied and everything looks and feels of high quality.

Braun M90 in hand.

The M90 exhibits some of the traits that made Braun’s industrial design from the Dieter Rams era world famous. It uses simple solutions that work brilliantly.

First, there’s the integrated rotating protective cap that also doubles as a travel lock.

M90 travel lock.

When it covers the foil, the ON/OFF switch is physically locked and can’t be operated.

Turning the cap 180 degrees unlocks the switch while also extending the total length of the shaver, making it more comfortable to hold and operate.

braun-m90

See the price on Amazon

Braun practically fixed 3 problems (travel lock, protective cap, ergonomics) with only one clever feature, the rotating cap. This is what good design is all about.

Another brilliant solution is the included cleaning brush that slides into the back of the shaver and is securely held in place.

Braun M90 cleaning brush.

This apparently minor detail just makes things much easier for the user. The cleaning brush is a small item that’s easy to misplace or you simply forget to bring it along.

Again, props to Braun for thinking about the small details.

To access the battery compartment, you must turn the bottom cover 90 degrees counter-clockwise and pull.

Braun M90 battery cover.

When opened, this hatch remains attached to the body of the shaver, so you can’t lose it and also has a rubber gasket around it to keep water from getting in.

Braun M90 battery hatch.

These are small details that ultimately make a big difference. The battery cover locks securely and everything lines up perfectly.

Overall, I was very impressed with the build quality and the ergonomics of the Braun M90.

The M90 is powered by two regular AA batteries and they can be easily replaced with new ones.

Depending on how you use the razor, a couple of quality alkaline AA batteries should provide one hour of shaving time. And that’s actually quite good.

You can also use rechargeable batteries (with a separate, standalone charger) to reduce your running costs to a minimum.

As I said at the beginning of this review, I find the solution of regular, replaceable AA batteries to be a decent one for a travel shaver.

Since you don’t have to carry around a charging cord or wait quite a lot for a full charge, the Braun M90 is a versatile and practical travel razor.

Being a basic and simple electric shaver, the M90 is extremely easy to clean.

Moreover, the foil and cutter can be separated, unlike the ones on other Braun shavers that use cassettes. This makes the cleaning process extremely straightforward and easy.

Removing the foil is done by gripping the frame from the sides and pulling it gently forward.

The foil should come off very easily and expose the cutter.

You can tap the foil frame on the countertop to remove the hairs and use the included brush to clean the cutter. Do not use the brush on the foil as it can be easily damaged.

Being waterproof, the Braun M90 mobile shaver can also be rinsed with water.

Cleaning the M90 with water is very easy

You can put a few drops of liquid soap on the foil for a more thorough cleaning and let it run for a few seconds.

Rinse off all the soap from the foil and cutter with warm tap water, then pat dry with a cloth. Leave the foil unattached until everything is completely dry.

Cleaning with water and soap removes pretty much all lubrication from the blades, so it’s highly recommended to use a couple of drops of clipper oil on the cutter and foil at least once a week.

This will minimize the friction between the blades and the foil, reducing the heat and minimizing the wear.

The shaving experience with the Braun M90 was a bit of a mixed bag. However, I will say right off the bat that for its intended purpose, it worked quite decently.

When used for everyday shaving, the razor performed well.

The closeness was adequate and dealing with short hairs wasn’t a problem.

However, being a basic razor, with just a single foil and a not-so-powerful motor, completing a shave was more time-consuming than usual.

Shaving every two days or more with the M90 unfortunately showed its limitations.

Longer hairs were constantly being left behind, especially on my neck where they tend to lie flat against the skin.

Trying to go over them with more passes only resulted in discomfort and I ultimately had to use the popup trimmer to cut the stray hairs.

Speaking of which, this is pretty much the only use for it. Its positioning, small size, and curved edge make it very difficult to use. But at least it’s there.

Braun M90 trimmer.

Another gripe I have with the Braun M90 has to do with comfort.

More precisely, the post-shave comfort.

While during the actual shave everything seemed just fine, right after completing a shave I always experienced some noticeable stinging and redness on my neck.

This sensation faded pretty quickly once I applied an after-shave balm.

Using a pre-shave did improve comfort, but it was still not a smooth experience. If you have sensitive skin (like I do), definitely keep this in mind.

Overall, using the M90 for shaving a one day beard shouldn’t be a problem for most men.

However, using it for longer, thicker hair will most likely result in an unpleasant shaving experience.

Being a mobile shaver, the Braun M90 is intended to be used sparingly as a backup/complementary shaver.

There’s not much to say about this as the retail package only includes the shaver and two AA batteries.

To be fair though, the protective cap and the cleaning brush are basically part of the shaver and there’s also no need for a charging cord. The scarcity of the package is somewhat justified.

Being a mobile shaver, I would have liked to find a travel case as well, but unfortunately there isn’t one.

This is another area where things go a bit sour with the M90. There are two main problems with the replacement parts: durability and cost.

The blades tend to go dull pretty quickly, especially if you have medium to thick facial hair.

The foil doesn’t hold up much better either and there are multiple stories of users who have experienced this.

Precisely, the foil can break after one year or even after a few months of use. Mine seems to be just fine, but others apparently weren’t as lucky.

And then there’s the price issue.

In the past, the foil and cutter would cost as much as a brand new M90 shaver, and in that case you were better off buying the whole shaver instead.

Luckily, the price has dropped since and it’s now somewhat reasonable.

  • Foil and frame

The M90 is not a full-fledged electric razor intended to be used as an everyday shaver.

There are people who have successfully managed to use it as one, but I don’t see it happening for most men. I personally couldn’t use the M90 for anything more than a quick shave after one day of growth.

If you have a very light beard and don’t suffer from sensitive skin, you could get away with using it as your main shaver.

But in other situations, I just don’t see it happening because of the average performance and the sheer time it takes to complete a shave.

The M90 was intended to be a complimentary razor and to be used on the go. And for that alone, it does the job fine.

You can keep it in a drawer at your office, in your gym bag or in the glove box of your car and it can be very convenient for cleaning up a five o’clock shadow.

I wouldn’t consider it a viable option for traveling if I was away for more than a couple of days. If that’s the case then I highly recommend sacrificing a bit more luggage space and bringing along a proper shaver.

Being inexpensive and very well built, the M90 is a great shaver to have as a backup solution. Just toss it in your bag and you’re all set.

I was never fond of travel shavers as I’ve always preferred the performance and comfort of a more advanced, full-fledged razor .

While not as compact, it always seemed like a good compromise to me.

A good alternative to the M90 would be the Panasonic ES3831K. There are a few reasons for this.

Panasonic ES3831K

The Panasonic is also a wet & dry shaver. Being able to use it with shaving cream is a big plus for me as I always get better results when wet shaving with Panasonic razors.

With Braun, the improvements of a wet shave aren’t that significant.

Secondly, the Panasonic is slightly more compact. While the M90 is not by any means a large shaver, the ES3831K is smaller.

tesco travel razor

Another bonus point for the Panasonic is the price. The shaver itself is usually cheaper, even though the gap is now a lot smaller than in the past (as the M90 used to be more expensive).

Also, the replacement foil and blade for the Panasonic are cheaper than the ones for the M90.

Lastly, the Panasonic seems to be more frugal with the power consumption, being able to go for months with 2 AA batteries.

13 thoughts on “Braun M90 Review: A Solid Travel Shaver”

I do not have heavy beard growth and find the shave very comfortable by using a light pass over all areas of the beard. It is effective and does a good job and is pleasant to use. I find that I am using it more than my mains electreic Braun

Thank you for the comment, Gordon. Sounds like you’ve found the right shaver. If you have a light beard the M90 could very well be used as an everyday shaver.

Sincerely, Ovidiu

Very difficult to get spare foil – over a month quoted as all seem to come from China. It will break after a few months so forced to throw away the shaver and get another which I hate in view of the plastic involved – envronmentally unsustainble. (Like my other pet hate, computer printers where the ink cost more than printer!)

That is true and unfortunately it’s the same situation with other travel shavers as well.

bought the panasonic over the braun and had to return it the pain on my neck was too severe it felt like somebody slit my throat! i have a panasonic 4 blade shaver and theres no problem with redness or sensetivity

It is a lot less forgiving than an Arc 4, especially on the neck. I also have to be really careful using it in order to avoid discomfort and razor burn.

really good design

I had the M60, and it was just good enough to avoid the bin. Compared with the older e-razor, it was huge, the battery compartment was hard to open and it didn’t last long. I ended up with an iShaver which was vastly better as a travel shaver in every respect, but is sadly no longer available.

Thank you for your comment, Tim. I never got the chance to try it unfortunately, so can’t really compare it to the M60/M90 from personal experience.

I bought the M-90 in Feb 2022, and the user guide specifically says you can use it wet:

“This appliance is suitable for use in a bath or shower. When using it in a shower, we recommend that you apply shaving foam or gel.”

Many thanks for the heads up — that seems to be the case now. My unit is a very old one and it was explicitly marketed as a dry only shaver.

The m90 is prone to razor burn on the neck area if you do not use it as a wet shaver. It seems shaving cream prevents this and also keeps the shaver cleaner. The shaver reminds me of the Braun 123, I had way back as teenager in 1988. None of the current Braun models other than the M-Series are similar to that time. The reality is that this shaver is better than a lot of electric shavers costing three times as much, and it is important to remember no electric shaver can shave as a close as a blade. I use it mainly on days when I am very busy and using it before passing over my face with a standard razor saves time. It is a wet and dry shaver and it costs less than blade refills. I bought my first one at Frankfort Airport when I forgot to pack my razor. I went into a shop at the airport and salesperson sold me an M90 for about 25 Euros. I had for a long time not used an electric shaver, and I was surprised it allowed me to presentable when I arrived at my destination. Since then I keep one around. It is a good product.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. That is true, it’s a bit too aggressive when used dry and shaving cream can make it more manageable. If you need a similar shaver (even smaller in size), but significantly gentler during a dry shave, there’s XIAOMI MIJIA Braun Electric Shaver that was recently released. A bit pricier than the M90, but a lot more comfortable and quite a bit better with longer hairs. I will be reviewing it as well.

The 10 Very Best Electric Razors

“using electric razors can be so much better for the skin.”.

Portrait of Rachael Griffiths

In this article

  • Best rotary electric razor
  • Best barbershop-style foil
  • Best single-foil
  • Best for longer facial hair
  • Best for traveling

After three years of grooming reporting, I know that an electric razor can give a close, comfortable shave, with minimal razor burn or rash. “Using electric razors can be so much better for the skin.” Chad Beightol, founder of grooming boutique Consigliere, agrees: “There was a time when electric razors would burn the skin and not get a very close shave, but that time has long passed.” But depending on how much hair you have (and how sensitive your skin is), certain electric razors will be more suited to your needs than others. Foil razors work best with stubble, for example, where longer hair demands a shaver with a rotary head.

To find the best electric razors — both foil and rotary — I spoke to 16 grooming experts about their favorites. I also got my hands on their picks to test their quality and battery life, and recruited the help of guys I know who shave regularly to test them for me. If you know the type of shaver you’re after, you can use our handy menu to jump straight to that category. Otherwise, read on for our pick of the 10 very best.

What we’re looking for

Rotary vs foil.

A foil razor will provide a slightly closer shave than a rotary-style razor. But foil razors really only work well on short facial hair. Beightol explains that a foil razor is most effective if used every day or at least every three days while rotary shavers can get a very close shave on up to ten days of growth. Another benefit of rotary-style electric razors is that they have a larger “surface area,” so it takes less time to pass over your face for a full shave. Still, my experts agree that because rotary and foil electric razors each work better for different lengths and types of facial hair, having one of each in your arsenal is a good idea if you’re looking for a professional-quality electric shave at home. “Use a rotary for cutting down short enough, then a foil to get super close,” explains Vince Garcia , co-founder of L.A. barbershop Grey Matter, who told us he likes to use both on his clients — including some of the NBA’s biggest names . For this reason, I decided to structure this list slightly differently than usual — designating separate “best overall” rotary and foil electric razors.

Pivoting head(s)

The more a razor follows the contours of your face, the more efficient it will be — catching every hair on the first pass. Many electric razors achieve this with flexible pivoting heads that move in response to the curves and angles of cheeks, chin, jawline, and neck. This helps protect you from cutting yourself while shaving.

Wet and dry functionality

“When your hair is wet, it softens, which allows the blade to move much better — preventing any irritation,” says barber Craig Whitely , explaining why lots of people prefer shaving in the shower or with shaving cream or gel for lubrication. But shaving dry is also handy when you don’t have time for a full wet routine. Ideally, you’d have one tool that can give you a great shave — wet or dry.

Battery life

An electric razor that you don’t have to charge very often is extremely convenient, especially if you travel a lot or work as a professional barber. And if you shave every day, you don’t want to find yourself running out of battery life as you’re rushing to get ready for work. All of the electric razors on this list will hold a charge for at least 45 minutes. Some will even let you quickly charge them for five minutes — giving you enough power for one shave in case you find yourself in a pinch.

Although the essential criteria above are what’s most important, sometimes it’s the extra bells and whistles that make using an electric razor more enjoyable and convenient. Things like pop-up trimmers, cleaning brushes, self-cleaning pods, a USB charger, a bold and easy-to-read digital display, pressure sensors, or companion apps can improve your experience and how you look after you shave.

Best rotary electric razor overall

Philips Norelco Shaver 7700

Rotary | Pivoting heads: Three 360-degree pivoting heads | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 60-minutes + five-minute quick charge | Extras: Cleaning pod, pop-up trimmer, digital display, pressure sensor, app-enabled

I’m a big fan of the Philips’s Norelco range — it’s reliable and not too expensive. Barbers agree — two experts I chatted with recommended its 7700 shaver. It’s a rotary-style razor and a solid all-rounder.

Steve Waldman , artistic and technical director at Hair Cuttery Family of Brands, appreciates how the razor contours to the face’s bone structure — providing a really close shave, even along trickier parts to reach along the jaw and neck. My tester, Andre Gill, also found this. He usually shaves with clippers, but he told me that when he tried the 7700 wet, it was one of the closest shaves he’d ever achieved at home. Gill was particularly pleased as he sometimes finds little spots of irritation along his neck after shaving, but didn’t have that problem with the Norelco. “It means I can use it a few times per week and stay as clean-shaven on my neck as I like to,” he says. Gill also liked that the razor’s charger, which he says only has to be used once a fortnight (or after around ten shaves), doubles as a handy stand for the device.

Best (less expensive) rotary electric razor

Philips Norelco Shaver 3800 With Pop-up Trimmer, Charging Stand, and Storage Pouch

Rotary | Pivoting heads: Three | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 60-minutes + five-minute quick charge | Extras: Pop-up trimmer

This 3800 shaver is from the same brand, and while it is a simpler model, it still has a lot of the same functionality. At nearly $100 less than the Philips Norelco razor featured above, it has the same battery life and can be used both wet and dry. According to Beightol, the heads still pivot, just not as dynamically as those of the 7700, and it features a pop-up trimmer for touching up mustaches, sideburns, and edges. Beightol, who has been using rotary electric razors for over a decade, says that he has always stuck with a relatively simple model like this one. A lot of grooming comes down to personal preference, but if budget is your main concern, I’m confident in pointing you toward the 3800.

Best rotary electric shaver for bald heads

Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold PRO Head and Face Shaver

Rotary | Pivoting heads: Four | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 90-minutes | Extras: USB charger

Those with bald heads should look for an electric razor that can be easily maneuvered across the curve of the skull and doesn’t miss hairs. Waldman adds that the key is to find one with pivoting and adjustable blades that can “navigate the head’s uneven landscape.” Two experts I chatted with say this Skull Shaver electric razor fits the bill — with its ergonomic design and rotary blades. The blades cut close but skip over any of the scalp’s irregularities and won’t irritate the skin, according to Raposo. Waldman recommends going in with gentle pressure and maintaining even contact for the best shave.

Best overall foil electric razor

Braun Series 9 Electric Wet/Dry Electric Razor With Charge/Clean Stand

Foil | Pivoting heads: One with five shaving elements | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 60-minutes | Extras: Pop-up trimmer, cleaning brush, self-cleaning pod

When it comes to foil electric razors, the Braun Series 9 takes the top spot. It’s powerful, precise, and shaves “almost as close as a straight razor” says master barber Angelo Ruscetta of American Haircuts in Kennesaw, Georgia. Like the Phillips 7700, it was designed to work on wet hair — meaning that even though you’re cutting as close as possible to the face, your skin shouldn’t feel any irritation afterward. Garcia uses this electric razor in his shop, but says it’s just as suitable to use at home for nonprofessionals. In addition to this razor getting nice and close, he says that “the higher quality of Braun blades makes them less prone to irritating sensitive skin, because they’re able to achieve as much power with thinner metal on the foil; the thicker the foil, the harder it is for the blade to cut hair and the more it pulls.” Garcia adds that he has had to replace the blades on cheaper foil razors, because they’ve dulled down over time, but he has never had to do that with his Braun. Whitely, another fan, praises Braun’s technology — explaining that the brand has “perfected the balance between a strong motor and a gentle shave.”

It is, of course, quite pricey, but it’s worth noting that this is Braun’s top-of-the-line model — made in Germany and packed with features like an automatic self-cleaning base. The ability to disinfect between uses, which helps prevent shaving-induced breakouts, is especially important to people who shave their heads, adds Ruscetta, so this would be a great choice for anyone looking for a razor that can shave their face and give them that cue-ball look.

Best (less expensive) foil electric razor

Panasonic Arc5 Wet/Dry Electric Razor

Foil | Pivoting heads: One with five shaving elements | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 45-minutes | Extras: Pop-up trimmer, pressure sensor, digital battery-life display

I thought I’d also throw in a more budget-friendly option. When I asked my experts for some pointers, Kim told me he found this Panasonic foil electric razor to be “comparable in terms of quality but for around $100 less.” He says he uses it every day, it provides a “very smooth cut that’s never harsh on the skin,” and the razor’s flexible head “moves really well — so that you can get to every area of your face without having to angle your arm.” He prefers to shave while his hair is dry, but Kim adds that the razor is true to its wet/dry name: “You can use this on wet hair and run it under water without any problems.”

Best barbershop-style foil electric razor

Wahl Professional 5-Star Series Shaver Shaper

Foil | Head: Non-pivoting | Dry functionality | Battery life: 90-minute battery life | Extras: Charging station

Barbershop-style foil electric razors are slightly wider and thicker — and lack the user-friendly ergonomic handles of the suggestions above. But Miguez prefers that, and shaves with the Wahl’s foil electric razor (and not the very popular Andis below), because the thick, wide model feels nicer in the hand.” (I should note that Wahl also makes barber-favorite beard trimmers and hair clippers .) Miguez says he uses it for full shaves and beard-neatening on clients and no one has complained of irritation — a telling sign he always looks for. While he prefers the razor in black (“an aesthetic thing”), you can get the same model a little cheaper in a reddish-purple color. Multiple experts assured us that there’s no reason for professional foil shavers like this one to only be used by barbers, but you might need to be more aware of technique than you would be otherwise (since it doesn’t have a pivoting head), and, as with any electric razor, it’s important to swap in new blades as recommended by the manufacturer.

Best (less expensive) barbershop-style foil electric razor

Andis 17150 Pro Foil Lithium Titanium Foil Shaver

Foil | Head: Non-pivoting | Dry functionality | Battery life: 80-minute battery life | Extras: Can be used corded or cordless

Almost every single barber I spoke with mentioned this razor: It’s simple, effective, and inexpensive. However, it’s not exactly designed for consumers — note the clunky box shape and less appealing gray plastic — but it’s the model most of them trust to deliver professional-grade results and handle a high volume of use. They rely on it for everything from a face shave to skin fades for haircuts to cleaning up their clients’ necks. Master barber Karac Ruleau told me it’s what he uses “at the shop and at home. It gives you a super-close shave without any razor burn. It’s light, durable, inexpensive, and doesn’t require a frequent charge.” He tells us that he often spots contestants using it on RuPaul’s Drag Race — which I take as a strong endorsement.

Best single-foil electric razor

BaBylissPRO FX01 Single Foil Shaver

Foil | Head: Non-pivoting | Dry functionality | Battery life: Takes AA batteries | Extras: Auto cover shutoff

Conventional foil electric razors, like those I’ve mentioned thus far, are designed with multiple foils so that they can more efficiently cover a wider surface area. But according to Tuft barber Alejandro “AJ” Albano , who has been cutting hair for more than two decades, some folks find those multiple foils a bit unwieldy, which is why he prefers this streamline razor with only one foil. “I prefer having one straight bar, because it’s more conducive to having control when you’re shaping up,” he says. Albano adds that the FX01 is “compact and lightweight but still feels more solid than the plastic ones” from brands like Andis and Wahl. And this one has a sleeker body compared to those other barbershop models, which he thinks look “a little dated.” Lesley Bryant, owner of the Lady Clipper Barbershop in Washington, D.C., has similar praise for this razor, adding that it really “traps every hair.”

Best electric razor for longer facial hair

Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face + Body

Dual-side cartridge-style blade | Head: Pivoting | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 45-minutes | Extras: Three guard attachments for trimming

This Philips model (another Norelco) acts like an electric version of the classic cartridge razor (think Gillette). “It’s really an all-in-one product,” she says, noting that it comes with useful “trimming attachments” and the razor itself “gives a smooth finish.” It’s a trimmer-style razor, so it’s not going to be as close of a shave as a foil or rotary, but it should be just right if you’re going for a five-o’clock-shadow look or want to trim down longer beard hair. The fact that this one’s designed more like a cartridge razor makes it a bit easier to maneuver, which means creating neat lines around the ears and jawline will be even easier. In addition to being a great tool for styling facial hair (long or short), it’s designed to be used on the body, and Strategist contributor Kurt Soller notes that it’s great for traveling: “The small size, decent battery life, and punchy color make it just right for my Dopp kit .” Samuel Hickey, head barber at Murdock , is also a fan of the long battery life, which is “ideal if you’ve got a lot of hair to work on.” The razor’s a great option for anyone who “wants to maintain a bit of stubble but worries about using a conventionally bigger set of clippers.”

Best electric razor for traveling

Wahl All In One

Foil shaver head and rotary ear and nose head | Head: Non-pivoting head | Wet and dry functionality | Battery life: 80 minutes | Extras: Stubble guides and carry case

Another trimmer that’s great for grooming on the go comes from Wahl. Celebrity hairstylist Charley McEwan appreciates the fact that it comes in a set with tweezers and nail clippers for some added convenience when living out of a suitcase. “It only has one setting, so it’s more for maintaining shape rather than replacing a larger trimmer. But you can do your ears with it too — not enough guys pay attention to the very fine hairs on their ears,” says McEwan. He’s also a fan of the below-$20 price tag.

"In general, they are easier to operate than a manual razor , safer by claiming to reduce nicks and cuts , and don’t require special grooming items (such as shaving cream and aftershave)," adds Sabina Wizemann , another senior chemist at the GH Beauty Lab. "They are more suitable for on-the go grooming, as they save on time needed to lubricate and prep facial hair for a manual shave and while they are much more expensive than cartridge razors, they can be a good investment over the long term."

In addition to (sometimes big) differences in price, electric razors contain different features, accessories and satisfy different needs depending on your hair type, texture and shaving routine. The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab put them to the test by evaluating seven shavers with both consumer and Lab tests. A total of 35 men tested the razors and completed a questionnaire rating ease of use, performance and overall satisfaction, while experts measured various features in the Lab (weight, cord length, charge time and more). Additionally, Quiet Mark , a third-party testing certifier, evaluated the noise levels of these devices.

Here, we've compiled the top-tested Lab picks, as well as highly-rated and vetted products from our go-to online shopping sources, for the best and smoothest shave. Plus, the 411 on how to use electric razors, how to choose and how to clean them.

The top tested pick in our roundup, this shaver from Panasonic stood out for having the highest consumer score (100%) for gliding over skin easily, providing a close shave, working quickly, the beard trimmer being easy to use and overall satisfaction . It also has the shortest charging time and is one of the quietest models, according to the QuietMark testing, especially when in shaving mode as compared to the beard trimming mode. It does have a bulky cleaning station so a decent amount of counter space is required.

"In terms of closeness and ease of use, it's definitely the best all around electric shaver I've used," shares one tester. "The self-cleaning and battery life are also really attractive features."

A wallet-friendly option for this category, Conair's multi-tasking tool is easy to use and has the longest period of use from a quick five minute charge, according to Lab testing . It was one of the quietest razors according to QuietMark testing, with a similar noise level for both shaving and trimming modes. Consumers also like that it works well on heavy beards and mustaches and that it doesn't snag. While it holds a quick charge well, it took the longest charge time for a full charge (over three hours), so keep that in mind when it's running low for your next use.

"It has a strong motor and cuts my beard easily," says one tester. "The trimmer and the shaver are both sharp, precise and comfortable to use and the attachments for ear and nose grooming are a plus."

Boasting the highest consumer scores for being easy to maneuver during use, easy to store and not causing irritation , this luxury shaver seems worth the splurge. Testers appreciated the lack of ingrown hairs after use and that the razor holds a charge for a decent amount of time. Two things they didn't love: the beard trimmer and cleaning system, both of which were rated as not so easy to use. This razor received an average score in QuietMark noise testing, with the beard trimmer setting coming in significantly louder than other settings.

"It does a fantastic job and I get as close of a shave as I did with a manual razor, probably a little better even, and there's no irritation," shares one tester. Another "appreciates the switch that allows the shaver head to either remain stationary or more dynamic for a closer shave" and loves the storage case as "it allowed me to transport the shaver easily during my weekend trips."

If you need a razor that really lasts, this one from Yaman may be for you. According to our Lab tests, it has the longest battery life (up to 4 hours 37 minutes) and the longest cord length (78 inches) of the devices that were tested . Plus, it contains six international adaptors and is dual voltage, making it a good choice for travel . In terms of noise, this was one of the quieter models in our QuietMark testing. It is also the only shaver in the roundup that has a heated setting, which reviewers loved.

"When used with shaving cream, the RF warming option has a comfortable feel," shares one tester who was impressed with the razor overall. "The razor glides smoothly over the skin and provides a close shave without requiring a great deal of pressure on the skin." Another notes that "it is easy to use and figure out, even without reading instructions.

Philips Norelco S9000 Prestige Rechargeable Wet & Dry Shaver

When shaving your face , some razors have a hard time getting into smaller areas and crevices. This one from Philips had the highest consumer score for effectively removing unwanted hair around upper lip and mouth area, two spots that can give razors trouble to get smooth . Testers also like the weight (sturdy but not heavy), the amount of charge it holds and the easy controls. It isn't the quietest though — it received an average score in QuietMark testing — and has a bulky cleaning center.

"The handle fit easily into my hand," shares one tester, while another notes that it "gives good feedback on whether enough pressure and movement is being used for an effective shave."

Unlike many of the other razors shown, this one from Olov is not designed for the contours of men's faces; it is specifically for the body , pubic area and back, with a nose hair trimmer included as well. While we haven't tested it in the Lab, we love that it comes with two adjustable trimming guards for different hair lengths and has soft ceramic blades to prevent pulling or cutting skin . Most users raved about its performance, although a few felt it was weaker than expected and needed to go over certain areas multiple times.

"It worked well, never really pulled hair," says one Amazon reviewer, while another loves that it "offers a versatile solution for men's grooming needs, addressing sensitive areas with ease."

Maintaining a shaved head is no easy feat. Skull Shaver's razor with a four head blade smoothly shaves large areas with an ergonomic handle, making it quick and comfortable , important factors for those who do it often. This one was not tested in the Lab, but we love that it's worldwide voltage compatible, making it great to use at home or when traveling . Just be cautious when using as one reviewer noted the nicks on his neck after shaving.

"Love that it can be used wet or dry," says one Walmart reviewer. "Overall, my head is as smooth as it's ever been going to a barber."

How we test the best electric razors for men

line break

As mentioned above, The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab evaluated seven shavers with both consumer and Lab tests. A total of 35 men (five men per product) were instructed to use the product following the manufacturer’s directions at least two times before completing a questionnaire rating the ease of use, performance and overall satisfaction.

In the Lab, experts measured the weight, cord length, charge time, discharge time without load and a five-minute quick charge/discharge time for each product. A drop test simulating a drop from a bathroom counter was also conducted to test the durability of these shavers and Quiet Mark, a third party testing certifier, evaluated the noise levels of these device on a three point scale.

What to look for when shopping for the best electric razor for men

line break

Wnek suggests keeping the following criteria in mind and choosing a shaver based on your preferences for each factor:

✔️ Type of electric razor : Rotary or foil — keep reading for the main differences between the two.

✔️ Electrical needs: Are you traveling ? Do you need a dual voltage product? If so, double-check the packaging information.

✔️ Size: Many of these products come with accessories that are bulky, like the cleaning and recharge stations. If you don't have a lot of counter space, factor that into your choice.

Are rotary or foil shavers better?

One isn't better per se, but they do have points of difference. Rotary razors typically have multiple circular blades that rotate and pivot independently. "They are usually easier to maneuver around the contours of your face and are thought to be better for coarser hair types compared to foil razors," Wnek says. Foil razors, the more common of the two, typically have one or more linear blades and "tend to be easier to clean."

How do I use an electric razor?

line break

There are a lot of rules to follow when it comes to using an electric razor. "As every shaver is different, we recommend reading the instruction manual of your individual product thoroughly for proper use," says Wnek. She shares some general guidelines for safe and effective use:

  • Don't charge the razor close to the sink or tub.
  • Only use the razor wet (if it has that capability) when it has been charged and unplugged from the source.
  • For hygienic reasons, do not share shavers with friends or family.
  • Save your receipt. Lab tests found that attachments can pop off if dropped from counter level. The attachments on most shavers can be easily reattached but in our Lab testing, there were a few that couldn't. If your attachment is unable to be reattached and work normally, reach out to your manufacturer for further assistance. The receipt is your proof of purchase, and it can help streamline your conversation with technical support.
  • If you can't reach a tight area like the upper lip (some electric shavers are too bulky for this spot), use a traditional razor for a clean shave.

What’s the best way to clean an electric razor?

Every shaver is built a little differently and has its own unique cleaning requirements. Some of the shavers even come with a cleaning station. Wnek always recommends referencing the manufacturer instructions for the best ways to clean an electric shaver and maintain its optimal performance.

In general, Wnek recommends cleaning the appliance after each use. This can include brushing any trimming with the included brush, rinsing under running water and drying thoroughly before storage or use. "It is key to remove the supply cord from the outlet before cleaning the product," she says. Some also require oiling for optimal cutting performance so you should check your product’s instruction manual to see if that is the case.

Best Razor for Sensitive Skin

And there are the debates: some say more blades mean better shave; others say more blades lead to more irritation and ingrown hairs. Some say innovative electric shavers are the way to go, while others swear by the old-school techniques of safety razors or even straight razors .

Where you fall on the debate is a personal decision—"the thing about shaving is everybody's skin is different. What works for others, may not work for you," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Azadeh Shirazi , MD, FAAD. The razor you choose thus comes down to your needs. To help you find the right one, we've spoken to grooming experts from barbers to dermatologists, as well as done testing on men's razors ourselves to curate the 15 best razors for men below.

What To Consider

Blade count.

"It is important to consider how many blades as multi-blade razors can offer a close shave, but also risk additional irritation," says Dr. Marisa Garshick. While many might go for a five-blade design since it'll shave faster and closer than a three-blade or one-blade (because fewer strokes are needed), some dermatologists argue that a five-blade might be overkill—more blades can lead to more friction and thus irritation, says Dr. Azadeh Shirazi. "It’s best to use as few blades to get the results you want to reduce your risk of irritation and razor bumps."

A single-blade design can also provide a close shave if you know the right technique. Which is why if you're prone to razor bumps or ingrown hair, Dr. Brendan Camp recommends razors with a single or double blade. However, for men with coarser, thicker hair, Dr. Lauren Penzi recommends multi-blade razors since they often provide a closer, easier cut that'll involve fewer strokes and therefore less friction and irritation.

Design Features

Every razor has its own qualities and characteristics. Getting a clean shave is half the battle. Before making a purchase, be sure to look out for specs that make your shaving experience more easier comfortable (i.e. handle design, waterproof capability, cleaning docks, built-in trimmer).

Blade Refills Included

After awhile, blades become dull from active use. That said, when you're buying reusable razors, you should opt for one that has refills to achieve a smooth and close shave every time.

How We Selected

We consulted with Men's Health 's Grooming editors and writers on the best-performing razors for men. Experts, including our Grooming Editor Garrett Munce and Deputy Commerce Editor Christian Gollayan, tried a number of men's razors to the test and evaluate their effectiveness, comfort for different skin types, closeness of shave, and ease of use. We also spoke with grooming experts such as professional barbers and dermatologists to curate the best razors for men.

MOST COMFORTABLE RAZOR

Gillette heated razor.

Pamper yourself with a nice hot towel shave weekly, courtesy of Gillette's heated razor . It turns warm barbershop shave into an at-home hot-towel shave—with every stroke—endeavor using chargeable, heatable cartridges that soften the hair while it shaves. Specifically, its stainless steel warming bar coupled with a flex five-blade design allows for a more comfortable, closer shave. The waterproof razor comes with an adjustable heat feature to provide you with the perfect temperature, plus you get a nifty rechargeable stand.

Testing Notes: We test all these newfangled gadgets like this with a healthy dose of skepticism and frankly, not all of them live up to what they promise. This heated razor, however, is one of the rare cases that it does—and actually exceeds them. The stainless steel bar built in to the head of the razor actually does heat up with various heat settings depending on your comfort level (don’t worry, even the highest setting doesn’t burn your skin) and the experience of shaving with the combination of heat and five blades really does deliver a closer, more comfortable shave. The overall experience is pleasant and we noticed less irritation and razor burn afterward than we would typically see with a non-heated razor.

BEST MANUAL RAZOR

Gillette fusion5.

Traditional razors can't get better than Gillette's Fusion5 which packs feat after feat. According to celebrity hairstylist and master barber Cody Renegar , it's got blades that are flexible enough to maintain contact with your skin at all times, and a conditioning pad that helps the blades glide over the skin without lifting or creating cuts. In addition, the five-blade plus stretchy microfins design ensures a close and smooth shave, while the precision trimmer brings about a cleanly sculpted shave.

You can also use the extra single blade on the top edge to create a sharp sideburn without digging the blade into your skin, Renegar says. "What's also great is that they're pretty affordable, you can find them everywhere, and you can find replacement blades at any drugstore," he adds.

Testing Notes: When it comes to shaving, more blades aren’t always better, but in the case of this razor, five is the lucky number. These cartridges pack in the shaving power with five blades and a larger lubrication strip the combo of which delivers a smoother, closer shave without as much irritation. We found that these blades last about five shaves (one for each blade), which is also a pretty good track record when compared with other, lower quality blades that get dull faster. The handle itself is lightweight and easy to hold with a rubberized feel that is easy to use in the shower if you’re that kind of shaver.

BEST ELECTRIC RAZOR

An electric razor that doesn’t pull or irritate your skin, even during the adjustment period? Yes, please. You're looking at our hands-down favorite razor right now: the 100% waterproof Braun Series 9 Pro. Celebrity barber Ray Santos whose clientele includes NBA players recommends it for achieving a bearded look, as well as bringing it with you whenever you're traveling. "It's perfect for guys on the go thanks to the world’s first portable PowerCase," Santos says. The built-in AutoSense technology also provides a customized shave for all users, and the 10-direction flex head makes sure to get every single spot with titanium-coated blades. Really, this is the Ferrari of razors right here—hence the price tag.

Testing Notes: We stand beside our review that the Braun Series 9 Pro electric razor is the best on the market. In our extensive testing of electric razors, this one stood out heads above the rest due to its tech-packed design that actually does deliver a more efficient shave, even if you have days worth of stubble. It effectively cut our shave time nearly in half and you’re able to use it both wet and dry, with or without products depending on your preference. However you choose to use it, if you’re thinking of making the switch to an electric shave, this is the best possible option.

Read More: The Braun Series 9 Pro Review

Our editors absolutely love this razor. It shaves smoothly, cleanly, and efficiently without nicking or cutting—you can easily rub it back and forth on the skin—with long-lasting replaceable blades. We love it most for its ability to maintain a low stubble that makes us look rugged yet refined. In fact, board certified dermatologist Lauren Penzi , MD, FAAD says that it's "a great, reliable electric shaver option for men who are prone to ingrowns and don't mind a little stubble." Moreover, the real beauty of this electric razor-trimmer hybrid is that you can use it for literally any look on anywhere you want to shave. It gives a close, clean shave on both your face and body, but also comes with length guards if you want to keep some length.

Testing Notes: The OneBlade will always be a winner because it’s just so darn easy to use. Built like a classic razor, but with the power of an electric shave, the best thing about this device is the innovative blade, which delivers a close, fast shave with very little risk of nicking or cutting. The multiple “stubble” guards allow you to customize the length of your shave if you’re the type of guy who likes perma-stubble and it really shines when you use it dry (though it can also be used in the shower). It’s also just as effective on your body as on your face, making it an indispensable tool for all your shaving needs. Just be sure to switch the blade when using it on your body to cut down on the risk of cross contamination of bacteria.

BEST DISPOSABLE RAZOR

It’s hard to beat the price of this simple yet effective razor—and it actually works too. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick , MD, FAAD likes it because it's a travel-friendly razor that "uses a soothing lubricated strip containing aloe vera to calm the skin," while giving you a close, smooth anywhere you use it, which also makes it ideal for legs. Best of all is the fact you get a total of eight cartridges in this pack. "It is also an affordable option as it contains 7 refills, which should be used once the blade becomes dull," adds Dr. Garshick.

Testing Notes: Disposable razors are great for certain scenarios like travel or shaving certain parts of your body, but they can also be pretty wasteful and, worse, not very effective. What we found we liked most about this razor in our testing process is that the 5 blade cartridges are just as effective as a reusable razor with a similar design, so you’re not compromising on efficacy when choosing a disposable razor.

Also, the included cartridges snap on to the base of the razor when you need a new one instead of throwing out the whole thing, which we’d like to think helps cut down on plastic waste. We did find that the blades get dull fairly quickly (after a few uses) but that’s pretty standard for a disposable.

BEST FOR INGROWN HAIRS

Bevel safety razor kit.

Safety razors are known for having a single blade, which is great for anyone dealing with ingrown hair and razor bumps. According to Dr. Azadeh Shirazi , this is the perfect safety razor: it is weighted for better control, comes with a single blade to counter ingrown hairs and irritation, and has high-quality blades for a smooth shave with each stroke.

Dr. Marisa Garshick also approves of Bevel's single, double-edged blade which "helps to achieve a close shave without needing to apply a lot of pressure." Since it takes a village to help limit the chances of ingrown hair, we recommend the entire Bevel kit as opposed to just the razor.

Testing Notes: There is a learning curve when switching from a cartridge razor to a safety razor, so we found that the first few times using this razor, our shave took what felt like a really long time. But once you get the hang of it, including the all-important 30 degree angle, it does go faster—though you don’t want to go too fast as it’s easy to nick or cut yourself with this sharp, single blade.

We did find that it still delivers a close shave but actually does cut down on the amount of ingrown hairs and post-shave irritation we experienced after shaving, which is why many people switch to a safety razor to begin with. The handle is perfectly weighted to feel hefty in your hand but still glide smoothly across your skin making the actual act of shaving a pleasure.

BEST RAZOR FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Gillette skinguard.

If you have sensitive skin or are prone to irritation, shaving can become a special kind of hell. Gillette, however, has a solution. According to Dr. Azadeh Shirazi , its SkinGuard razor comes with a special guard on the blade that prevents it from shaving too close but doesn’t sacrifice efficacy. "It’s durable with a SkinGuard technology positioned between the blades to help protect the skin with each stroke. It minimizes tugging and pulling and therefore reduces the risk of irritation, so great for sensitive skin types."

While the 2-blade design won't provide a baby-smooth shave, you can still get a pretty close shave without the rash. Besides the ease of use, Dr. Marisa Garshick also highlights the comfort of its added lubrication for an easy glide, as well as its precision trimmer for hard-to-reach areas.

Testing Notes: When you have sensitive skin, too many blades can leave your face feeling trashed. We found that this razor, with just two blades plus a Skinguard feature that helps minimize how much the razor is actually dragging over your skin, does give a pretty close shave, though not as close as versions with more blades. It’s kind of a compromise—you won’t get quite as close of a shave, but it really does help protect sensitive skin from post-shave irritation. The blades are spaces out to help prevent nicks and tugs as well, a design feature we found to be very effective (we experienced no nicks at all, even the first time using it).

Razors We Also Tested

Harry's the Truman Razor : Harry’s has quietly taken over the world with its well-priced, easy-to-get razors that really work. Its classic multi-blade cartridges work exceptionally for all kinds of skin types. In particular, the Truman razor has "an ergonomic, weighted, no-slip handle for precision and comfort," according to Dr. Lauren Penzi who also praises its "German-engineered steel blades with lubricating trip allows for the ultimate close, smooth cut." In addition, Dr. Marisa Garshick likes it for its weighted core and textured rubber grip that's easy to hold. All in all, this $15 Truman Set will give you the best overall value, as you also get a bottle of shaving cream, three-blade cartridges, and a protective travel cover.

Merkur Double Edge Razor : Making the switch to a safety razor means fewer ingrown hairs and post-shave irritation—but it does take some practice, according to board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp , MD, FAAD. And this safety razor has a quality that justifies its price point. "It uses stainless steel double-edge razor blades that are very sharp with a thick weighted handle. This minimizes irritation while giving you a close shave even with coarse dense hair," says Dr. Azadeh Shirazi. "This is a wonderful option for someone prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps." Plus, its blades can easily snap on and are adjustable in length.

Gillette GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar Razor : For anyone hankering for a totally clean-shaven look, celebrity barber Ray Santos' top choice is the GilletteLabs with Exfoliating Bar—a winner of our 2022 MH Grooming Awards nonetheless. "It is an easy way to level up your grooming game because it combines two skincare steps—shaving and exfoliation—into one efficient stroke,” says Santos. “The built-in exfoliating bar removes dirt and oil from the skin prior to blades passing, leaving your skin feeling fresh and smooth." Plus, it has five blades and a bi-flex disc design, which will give you an accurate and close shave.

Another benefit of this razor, according to Santos, is its FlexDisc technology that contours to the face to ensure the blades make direct and comfortable contact with every stroke. "That’s a must-have for me when selecting a razor," he says.

Blade 2-Blade Disposable Razors : These razors make a case for the beauty of drugstore classics. It's entirely possible your father—or your old high school self—had disposable razors like these lying around when you were growing up. "While disposable razors are not as environmentally friendly as other razors, this 2-blade product is gentle on the skin to prevent nicks and bleeding," says Dr. Brendan Camp. No bells and whistles whatsoever, they still get the job done even on sensitive skin. Pop a few in your Dopp kit for when you want a close shave at the gym or on the road.

Schick Hydro 5 Sense Hydrate Razor : All the water and shaving products used can do a number to make your skin feel parched. Schick's hydrating razor targets this hiccup by infusing coconut oil into its gel to moisturize your face while you shave. "Containing 5 ultra-glide blades and 7 hydrating gel strips, this razor helps to achieve a comfortable shave while still nourishing the skin," says Dr. Marisa Garshick. That means no irritation or dryness after the shave. Plus, the razor comes with Shock Absorb tech that'll auto-adjust to your pressure for a safer, more comfortable shave. "It also has a flexible head that makes it good for use in hard-to-reach areas," adds Dr. Garshick.

Leaf Shave the Leaf Razor : The Leaf Razor isn't eco-friendly because of the materials it uses, but rather because of the materials it does not use: plastics. Yes, the Leaf is plastic-free, entirely recyclable, and refillable, so all you have to do is load in the blades (no cartridges needed) to use the triple-blade pivoting head. While its cost is on the higher end, celebrity stylist Pilar Scratch says the price is totally worth it. "It leaves your skin feeling smooth, even for sensitive skin. If you want a face razor just purchase their single-blade option," she says. And, oh, did we also mention how dang good they look from a design standpoint?

Gillette ProGlide : For just $20, you'll get Gillette's sharpest blades that are also anti-friction, smoother lubrastrip, precision trimmer, and—most importantly—the FlexBall tech at the handle that responds to contours even over the trickiest places. No wonder TV and media personality Antoine Von Boozier co-signs it. "Not only do these razors deliver an exceptional level of smoothness and closeness to the shave, but they also incorporate advanced technology and multiple blades to minimize the risk of irritation," says Boozier.

Parker SR1 Stainless Steel Straight Edge : Straight razors are probably the toughest type of razor to master—they're also very old school and are a Hollywood favorite. but if you want to achieve the absolute closest shave possible, then you could consider a straight razor. This classic design from Parker is made with fine stainless steel and has a nice weight and feel in hand. Not only is it easy to wield, but its rounded exposure can also help prevent cuts. While each purchase only offers five blades, the fact it's only $20 makes up for that.

What Type of Razors Gives the Closest Shave?

As established above, razors with more blades pave way for a closer shave, but not without drawbacks. However, if you're concerned with the type of razors—electric, cartridge, safety, and straight, it all comes down to your personal needs and skin type.

  • Straight razors give the closest shave possible because of a sharper blade that directly touches and cuts closer to the skin.
  • Safety razors also give a closer shave than most razors—despite having only one blade!—because of how sharp the blade is (and so long you know the right technique).
  • For cartridge razors, it mostly depends on the blade design—more blades or fewer blades. But compared to safety razors, they aren't always better.
  • Electric shavers , especially those with heads, definitely won't give you a closer shave than blades simply because of the lack of contact between the heads and the skin. They do, however, shave close enough to maintain a low stubble that looks nice and even unnoticeable. Dr. Penzi also recommends electric razors for those with ingrowns since they cut the hair above the skin surface.

Tips for Using Razors for Men

Avoid dull blades: no matter what razor you use, always make sure it’s sharp (switch it after a few uses) since a dull razor will wreak havoc on your face. "The most important is making sure the blade isn’t dull as that can increase the potential for ingrowns and irritation," says Dr. Marisa Garshick.

Wet your face first: "It’s important to start out by wetting your face with warm water to soften your facial hair,” says celebrity barber Ray Santos. “When I have time, I like to apply a hot towel directly to my skin for a few minutes before the shave to really prep my face."

Consider shaving gel: Lathering up your face with cooling shaving gel can help protect the skin from irritation. "Apply it all over the area that will be shaved. This helps the blades glide seamlessly over the skin," Santos emphasizes.

Shave with the grain: "Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation, says. "Note that hair grows in different directions in different locations on the face. For example, hair growth may be different on the cheeks than it is on the neck," he adds.

Use the right technique: this includes not shaving too fast or pulling your skin taut while shaving which will tighten the skin and give you a closer shave. But Dr. Camp warns of the latter technique's risk of razor bump. And always shave after a shower, when facial hair is at its softest and easiest to cut.

Shaving with confidence

Shaving with confidence with a really awesome close shave from a quality razor and blades

Excellent shave!

I'm always a fan of Gillette products and really like this razor, gives a really good smooth shave. Will buy the foam too to compliment it.One downer, the magnetic stand doesn't work and it annoyingly keeps falling out of the bathroom cabinet. :-)

Excellent close shav...

Excellent close shave as with all Gillette products.

Feels good to hold doesn't pull odd hair even after not shaving for a couple of days it also gives me a real close shaveand then it looks great on the side in the stand.

Gillette Labs Razor Bundle

I ordered this Gillette razor bundle  for my boyfriend.  He is delighted with this shaver. A good shaving and gently.  The skin is smooth and without baking feelings.  He is very happy and it is definitely his favorite shaver.

Smooooootthhhh!!

Easy ordering process, good selection of products, good deals, kept updated the whole time, arrived extremely quickly, absolutely fantastic razor, smoothest shave ever!!

This razor is the best razor ever most closest shave ever and only one or 2 strokes

I received this prod...

I received this product as a product test from Supersavvyme and am so happy I was picked. As a woman who did stop all hair removal due to either being cut to shreds from razors and painful rashes or a painful rash due to waxing, I thought I'd try shaving again but with mens razors, this ladies will rock your world. I will never go back to anything else again. The razor is so nice to hold, no Nick's or cuts and thanks to the matching shaving foam and after shave moisturiser, theres nothing to worry about again. A close and smooth shave with no cuts and no rashes.

Super Smooth

Best shave I have had by far. I use this razor for my head and beard. Will highly recommend and well worth it.

best shave ever

i could not believe Gillette could have make shaving even better but this new design delivers a new experience, with the softest skin i have ever had

Recycled Ocean Plastic (POPi) Shave 5 Razor System

Best for the Ocean

Preserve recycled ocean plastic (popi) shave 5 razor system.

The top earth-friendly razors come in several forms, but among the most sustainable types are safety razors. These tools use durable and reusable metal handles with recyclable removable blades, which cements them as zero-waste options. As safety razors are significantly sharper than regular old razors, experts advise treading carefully and preparing for a bit of a shaving learning curve ahead of making the switch. But once you get the hang of using these tools, we're betting you'll be amazed at how close of a shave they provide—meaning less irritation and unsightly razor bumps (win-win).

To help guide your search, we've narrowed down nine of the best eco-friendly razors ahead from Oui to the People , Schick , and more worth adding to your regular rotation.

Not only is this one of the prettiest razors we’ve ever seen, but it’s also optimized for the most sensitive skin. Even better, it's designed with 100 percent recyclable stainless steel blades (plus 10 replacement ones) that are completely nickel-free and designed to minimize irritation.

What’s included: 10 blades

Customer review: “Total upgrade! It’s easy to use and does as well as any plastic razor I’ve ever used. Absolutely beautiful as well!” —Julie

Available in eight colors, this hefty metal razor has a pivoting head with three precision blades for the closest shave possible. Customers say it's the only razor you’ll ever need, and nicely both the razor itself and its accompanying blades happen to be recyclable. Leaf is also a carbon-neutral company and even provides details on how to recycle your blades to help the environment further.

What’s included: Leaf stand, 50 single-edge blades, recycling tin

Customer review: “I’ve been using the Leaf razor for a number of years. Love it! It’s going to last forever and gives a great shave!” —Steph

Sure this millennial pink razor is aesthetically pleasing, but the details are what really set it apart. Consider its extra-long handle that makes targeting hard-to-reach areas a breeze, and its protective silicone cap that makes it perfect for travel. And did we mention both the product and packaging are recyclable and compostable?

What’s included: Five blades, silicone razor cap

Customer review: “I was a bit skeptical that I wouldn’t like this razor and would cut myself. The first time I got a small knick on my knee but it’s been smooth sailing since then. I get such a close and smooth shave. Worth the investment and learning curve.” —Amanda

If you really can't quit your Schick Intuition razor, you'll be happy to know the brand has a more eco-friendly alternative. The more sustainable version has handle that's made from biodegradable bamboo, with blades crafted from 75 percent recycled steel. Plus, its packaging totally plastic-free.

What’s included: Three blades

Customer review: “I’m so happy with these razors and the handle. Really lightweight and a super close shave. The razors also stay sharp longer than most. 10/10!” —M123

Though this single-blade safety razor may be a bit of an investment, it's a long-term one—especially since the tool's replacement blades cost less than $1 each. Another sustainable perk? Well Kept aims to plant one tree for every razor purchased.

What’s included: Razor only

Customer review: “This Well Kept safety razor was my first experience with a single-blade, reusable razor after tons of frustration with disposable razors that didn't give me a good shave and were hard to use. After one shave with Well Kept, I knew I was never going back! The nice weight and the blade angle means I get an easy, perfect shave on the first try.” —Susanna

Specifically designed to shave the face but also suitable for the legs, Bevel's weighted razor is designed to seamlessly glide over your body in a way that others just can’t. And like many eco-friendly razors, this one is also made without plastic, making it easy to safely recycle.

Customer review: “I’ve been using a straight razor for years and I’m delighted to say that this is a great improvement over what I’ve used in the past. As the title of the review says, this shave gets close to the skin and leaves your skin feeling smooth.” —Christian

One of the more affordable safety razors available, EcoRoots' razor design is easy to use, made from recyclable materials, and comes in two color options. Plus, the brand is also a member of 1% for the Planet , which means they annually donate a percentage of their sales to eco-friendly initiatives.

What’s included: Five blades

Customer review: “After doing a lot of research, this razor came highly rated. I love it! OMG I got the smoothest shave of my life with zero razor burn (which is something I get horribly no matter what I try or so I thought). I would 1000 percent recommend this razor to everyone looking into safety razors and for anyone like me who suffers from horrible razor burn.” —Alicia

This stainless steel razor is not only top-rated but also reasonably priced, making it that much more popular among beauty lovers. Its weighted handle ensures a safe shave and includes both short and long options depending on your preference. And to make your purchase even more sustainable, customers can choose to ship their tools using offsets that make their orders carbon neutral.

Customer review: “I've never enjoyed a razor more. I'm trying to be more mindful of what I buy and how it impacts the planet, and I think I made the right choice shopping here! No plastic!! I love that. And the razor has been a blessing. I normally knock myself or get ingrown hairs and I haven't experienced any of that with this product. I'm obsessed.” —Kaley

While this razor is technically made of plastic, it's actually composed of recovered, ocean-bound plastic waste which makes it earth-friendly. It's also designed with ceramic-coated blades and a cocoa butter- and aloe-infused strip for a skin-nourishing shaving experience.

Customer review: “So these razors have a solid construction, the entire family enjoys using them, and the blades are sharp without leaving burn or stubble. The fact these are made from recycled materials is exceptionally nice, as we all are aware enough is being done to the planet.” —Heather

best electric razors for women in 2023

Safety razors include a sharp blade (or blades) attached to a reusable handle. Because they can offer such a close shave, you should proceed with caution. To help prevent nicks and cuts, follow the below steps:

  • Prior to shaving, apply a thin layer of oil or shaving cream to your skin. This will ensure that your skin stays smooth and irritation-free.
  • Don’t apply pressure. The head of these safety razors are weighted, so you don’t need to press into your skin while shaving. Many manufacturers also recommend holding the safety razor at a 30-degree angle.
  • Use shorter strokes. Take your time, especially at the beginning, and avoid dragging the blade too much. In between strokes, rinse your razor blade to get the best shave possible.

The Braun M90 is a single-foil electric shaver powered by two AA batteries.
