one of the greatest bands this country has had I cant wait for this new cd dvd to come out Iv heard one or two tracks and its amazing

' src=

As I was there I was interested to hear this, to be fair it’s much better than I had feared, my only negative would be that on the day the fine bass playing was inaudible but on the album is in its proper place, perhaps this is an onstage sound issue? To close this is well worth getting and handsomely presented.

' src=

Hello, When will we get a real BLU-RAY? So with the video of this Concert. And not just the soundtrack even if it is, among other things, in DOLBY ATMOS. Few people have this kind of equipment. In addition, the sound recorded on stage and mixed is not the best. I would be ashamed for the studio and the distributor. We want the concert on video on DVD or better on BLU-RAY. That would be a minimum for us. Shame on you for this 2CD + Blu-ray audio choice. We feel like we’ve been robbed. And also our favorite band. Unless it’s a commercial move that the video version comes out a little later. A year or more. So that he makes a little more money. Very cordially Alain A fan of The Who

' src=

Hi Alain, the Wembley concert wasn’t filmed for DVD or Blu-ray. The only filming was for the live back screens at the show.

' src=

I got it thinking the Blu-ray was the video concert of the show with the CDs as the music. I was surprised the Blu-ray was the audio, too. I wish they had the video concert even if it was a different venue!

' src=

As a Life long Who super fan and an oldie – I was there in 1964 at Manor Ball Room Ipswich and again at Wembley in 2019 – Really looking forward to reliving the concert on Blu -Ray – had no Idea -why you would release just an Audio Blu Ray when the CDs were included. I thought I had bought the BluRay video of the Concert. The concert was excellent and the CDs too – but so sad the Blu Ray wasn’t Video.

The Who Release First Handful of 2023 Tour Dates

by Tina Benitez-Eves December 9, 2022, 9:45 am

Following up their The Who Hits Back! Tour of Canada and the U.S. in 2022, The Who has added on a small number of dates in Europe in 2023.

Videos by American Songwriter

Marking the first time the band has played in Europe in seven years, the initial three dates include shows in Spain, France, and Germany and kick off in June. Additional shows, including a full series of shows in the UK, will be added at a later date.

Like their most recent North American dates, The Who will be backed by a full orchestra for their European tour, featuring orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, cellist Audrey Snyder, and violinist Katie Jacoby.

Founding members Roger Daltrey, 78, and Pete Townshend, 77, will be backed by their longtime touring band—guitarist Simon Townshend, bassist Jon Button, keyboardists Loren Gold and Emily Marshall, and drummer Zak Starkey along with backing vocals by Billy Nicholls—and perform music from their nearly 60-year career, with sections devoted to the albums  Tommy  and  Quadrophenia .

“It is wonderful that we can return to Europe after so long away, to play Berlin, Paris, and Barcelona, three of my favorite cities in the world,” said Townshend in a statement. “We look forward to bringing our grand orchestral show which has received such great reviews so far and play some old-fashioned Who-style rock and roll songs from our back catalog as well. We mix it all up in the most amazing evening of music.”

Townshend added, “I have to say that this show is one that I personally enjoy as much as anything I have ever done in the 60 years I’ve been working with Roger.”

Earlier in 2022, Townshend joked that Roger Daltrey “wants to sing until he drops,” and that this isn’t a final Who tour. “No. It’s not a farewell tour,” said Townshend . “Apart from anything else, we still have people who have tickets for the UK 2019 tour [ The Who’s 2020 UK tour that was cancelled in 2021]. We’re very, very keen to do that tour and we’ll be doing that in 2023.”

The tour is the ’60s legends’ first tour for six years and will kick off on July 6 in Hull, after which they will play a mixture of indoor and outdoor shows across the country before signing off in Brighton on July 23. The nine-date run of shows will see the band return to Edinburgh for the first time in over 40 years, while they will also perform in Derby for the first time since 1966.

Sections of the show will be devoted to the group’s classic albums ‘Tommy’ and ‘Quadrophenia’, while they will also be playing songs from their most recent album, 2019’s ‘WHO’, which was their first studio album for 13 years.

UB40 featuring Ali Campbell will be joining them on all shows apart from Edinburgh and London.

The Who

“Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map – Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me,” said singer Roger Daltrey. “This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

Pete Townshend added: “Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.”

The 2023 UK tour will feature THE WHO’s full live band comprised of guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend, keyboardist Loren Gold, second keyboardist Emily Marshall, bassist Jon Button, drummer Zak Starkey and backing vocals by Billy Nicholls, along with orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, lead violinist Katie Jacoby and lead cellist Audrey Snyder.

The Who wound up their Who Hits Back tour of the US in November last year having wowed audiences in over thirty cities, with media and fans agreeing that the band were as good as, if not better than ever and that the orchestral arrangements, most of which were done by the legendary David Campbell, brought a new depth and excitement to Pete Townshend’s music.

Performing with The Who and an orchestra had been a long-held ambition for singer  Roger Daltrey   “Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me. This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

Pete Townshend  “ Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.”

The Who are calling upon fans to add an optional £1 donation onto their ticket price at point of sale in support of Teenage Cancer Trust. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are longstanding supporters and Roger has been the driving force behind Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concerts since they began in 2000. Roger Daltrey, arms wide with a tambourine in each hand, on tour with the Who.

The Who review – rock operas get an orchestral uplift in a show stuffed with classics

Castle Esplanade, Edinburgh Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are as playful as ever in a crowd-pleasing set featuring strings, brass and, in the audience, thousands of air guitars

‘I want what you’re taking,” Pete Townshend quips, pointing to an enthusiastic fan. “Not again,” retorts Roger Daltrey, comedically rolling his eyes. After six decades of bickering, the two original members of the Who still have compelling onstage friction.

In a loosely buttoned white linen shirt, Daltrey paces stage right, twirling his microphone and winking at the crowd. Townshend keeps firmly to his own half. “The Who? More like who’s left,” the guitarist deadpans, before gesturing at a stage packed with strings, brass and two drum kits: “We replaced Keith Moon with 50 people, so you’re getting your money’s worth.”

The Who Hits Back! tour is built to be a crowd-pleaser, combining orchestral performances of the classic rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia with a band-only section of pure hits. A majestic opening overture sweeps the Edinburgh crowd to their feet despite the evening’s heavy rain, but the first songs proper, including Tommy’s concise 1921, feel swamped by their expanded rearrangements. It takes Pinball Wizard to bring the energy back. The string section, with lead violinist Katie Jacoby, sounds victorious against Daltrey’s commanding, brassy voice, and Townshend’s iconic riff feels like a drone ringing through the Castle esplanade.

Spiky and electric … Daltrey (left) and Townshend.

Eminence Front locks into a strong groove, but other classics are set to cruise control: Who Are You is buoyed only by the crowd. By the middle of the show, however, the core band find a fresh edge, and a double-header of You Better You Bet and Substitute is spiky and electric. When the orchestra returns for Quadrophenia, it’s a much better match – instrumental The Rock seethes like a Bond theme.

Baba O’Riley, saved for last, is the musical equivalent of a fireworks display: Jacoby finds fresh heat in the outro’s well-loved solo, brandishing her violin at Townshend and dancing playfully with Daltrey. A delighted crowd air-guitars along with her.

The two Whos stay on stage for a softer finale. Tea & Theatre is a saccharine ballad about the band’s legacy, but it’s genuinely poignant when Daltrey sings Townshend’s lyrics directly to him: “We did it all, didn’t we?”

The Who at Wembley Stadium

About The Who

The Who are one of the top three greatest rock legacies in music history with 9 US & 10 UK top ten albums and 14 UK top ten singles.

They have played over well over 2000 gigs in a career spanning over 50 years including venues such as Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Glastonbury (twice), Hyde Park (four times), The Isle Of Wight (three times), the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, Desert Trip, Shea Stadium, The Superbowl half time show and Live Aid to name but a very few.

Emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n’ roll, their brash style and poignant storytelling garnered them one of music’s most passionate followings, with the legendary foursome blazing a searing new template for rock, punk, and everything after.

Inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has placed 27 top-forty singles in the United States and United Kingdom and earning 17 Top Ten albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971’s pummeling Live At Leeds, 1973’s Quadrophenia and 1978’s Who Are You. The Who debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems “I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” Since then, they have delivered to the world hits such as Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Pinball Wizard,” Who Are You,” and,” You Better You Bet.” 2008, they became the first rock band ever to be awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The Who has performed all over the world including global music events for the Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show in 2010 and closing the Summer Olympics in 2012. The Who continued their charity work by playing a concert in January 2011 to raise money for trials of a new cancer treatment called PDT. In December 2012 they performed at the Hurricane Sandy Benefit in New York.

Alongside his groundbreaking work with the Teenage Cancer Trust in the UK, in November 2012 Daltrey, with Townshend at his side, launched Teen Cancer America, $1 from each ticket sold on the 2019 MOVING ON! Tour, which each night featured a full orchestra, benefited Teen Cancer America ( www.teencanceramerica.org )

With both Roger and Pete delivering their own memoirs (Pete’s Who I Am was released to much acclaim in 2012, and Roger’s autobiography, Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite; My Story, was embraced by critics in 2018) it’s fitting that the two remaining WHO members have shared their incredible legacy in literary fashion, for few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who.

The band released their first new album in thirteen years, the critically acclaimed WHO in 2019 and are currently about to go back on the road in Europe with their THE WHO HITS BACK tour.

Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra season-ending concert celebrates heroes

the who orchestra tour 2023

For Monday's "Heroes" concert, closing the 2023-24 "Sounds of Triumph" season, celebrating human spirit, hope and resiliency, Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra Music Director Adam Flatt programmed two culminating pieces of contrasting scope, "New Morning for the World — Daybreak of Freedom," and an era-defining, world-changing "beast," Beethoven's "Eroica."

The former will feature actor-singer-musician Willie Williams, a Tuscaloosa native, reading texts from speeches by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., with the chamber music edition of Joseph Schwanter's Pulitzer-winning composition, a piece that's been compared to Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" due to its broad and lyrical scoring, matched to spoken words.

More: Free, family- and pet-friendly Live at the Plaza downtown concert series begins in May

When Flatt chose it, TSO Executive Director Natassia Perrinne knew Williams would fit, a colleague she'd known since her years as choir director at Central High School. Patrons might recall Williams from numerous performances on local stages, including a starring turn as Coalhouse Walker in Theatre Tuscaloosa's 2017 production of "Ragtime," a role he reprised in a concert version this January at the Bama Theatre.

"I'm thrilled he's coming back to do this," said Perrine. Williams is teaching music, theater and public speaking at Bishop State Community College in Mobile..

The chamber-style backing somehow " ... takes the soaring words of Dr. King, and makes them perhaps even more powerful," Flatt said, in a pre-concert video.

"I think everybody would agree that we still need MLK's words today, in 2024," Perrine said.

Beethoven's title translates to "heroic," inspired initially by Napoleon Bonaparte.

"Napoleon was a hero of Beethoven's," Perrine said. The composer initially believed the French leader embodied the spirit of revolution, of liberty, equality and freedom. "He quickly redacted that when Napoleon declared himself emperor.

"Then it became more about every human's journey. We all have pits, and falls, and challenges that we need to overcome."

Written at or about the time Beethoven admitted he was falling deaf, the symphony No. 3 has been interpreted as representing the composer's own struggles.

In the pre-concert video, Flatt added "This is of course a marquee work in the history of art. It kind of redefined ... what was possible through music. That music this powerful, ambitious was something that could be done. After two centuries, it remains a very powerful and hugely ambitious symphony," in four movements.

"It should be a very stirring experience."

Tickets for the 7 p.m. Monday concert, $33 to $43 (free for students), can be purchased through www.tsoonline.org , or by calling 205-752-5515.

'Stars Fell on Alabama'

The TSO has announced its 2024-2025 season, "Stars Fell on Alabama," featuring a pair of guest artists, and four soloists from within the orchestra, "a star on every concert," Perrine said.

A few changes: Because guest violinist Adé Williams will perform both an evening concert and an edited version for children, the TSO will offer six subscription performances this season.

Guest vocalist Joan Ellison performs Judy Garland-style vocals, so "Stars Fell on Alabama" will open with a pops concert, the Sept. 16 "Get Happy," named for one of the star's signature songs. That will bring the TSO back to perform in the Bama Theatre for the first time in more than a decade, since the 2013 Judy Collins concert.

Though the TSO has enjoyed the warmth and beauty of First Presbyterian Church for recent fall chamber performances, this season's Nov. 18 "Chamber of Lights" will move into the Moody Concert Hall.

"First Presbyterian is gorgeous; those chamber concerts have been highlights for me," Perrine said, "but we're just shaking some things up, trying some things. Like any experiment, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't."

"Home for the Holidays," Dec. 9, will follow tradition, with the TSO joined for seasonal works by the Alabama Choir School, and Alabama Choral Society.

Ozzy Molina, the TSO's principal clarinet, will be featured in the Feb. 17, 2025 "Dances and Dreams," performing Mozart's "Clarinet Concerto K. 626." That night's repertory will also include Dvorak's "Symphony No. 7," and John Adams' "The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra," from his opera "Nixon in China."

The March 3 evening concert is titled "Picture This," and will include William Grant Still's "From the Black Belt Suite," Mussorgsky and Ravel's "Pictures at an Exhibition," and Bruch's "Violin Concerto No. 1," the latter featuring guest artist Williams.

The season finale, April 21, will be "Hymns for Everyone," after Jessie Montgomery's "A Hymn for Everyone," which will be performed along with Sibelius' "Finlandia," "The Swan of Tuonela," and "Lemminkäinen's Return." TSO pianist Kevin Chance will be featured on the concluding Grieg work, "Piano Concerto in A minor."

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra USA’s 2023/24 season finale performance will feature the Portland Symphonic Choir on June 1 at 7 pm and June 2 at 3 pm at Skyview Concert Hall. VSO’s Music Director and Conductor Maestro Salvador Brotons will lead the orchestra and the Portland Symphonic Choir in Ludwig van Beethoven ’s timeless masterpiece Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 (“Choral”) with soloists Megan Belov (soprano), Grace Skinner (mezzo-soprano), Katherine Goforth (tenor), Anton Belov (baritone) from the Portland Symphonic Choir. Both performances of this concert will also be available as a simultaneous live stream at vancouversymphony.org .

Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 (“Choral”) premiered in 1824 and is the last complete symphony ever written by Beethoven. It is notably the first symphony written by such a distinguished composer to include vocal soloists and a chorus. Despite its innovative elements, the symphony was not an initial success, yet it went on to influence nearly every 19th-century composer after Beethoven and is one of the most popular pieces of symphonic music to this day.
