Explore the Hidden Kingdom of Bhutan
I took this tour in Bhutan and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. The guide was amazing in every way. Their communication was clear and they provided a detailed plan for each day of the tour, which helped us make the most of our time. They were also very flexible and accommodating to my interests, which made the tour feel very personalised. Additionally, the guide was extremely knowledgeable when it came to the history and culture of each location we visited. They provided a lot of insight and context that helped me understand and appreciate the sights we were seeing. The hotels were also of high quality, and provided a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The driver was also excellent and made sure that we arrived safely at each destination. The meals during the tour were well-timed and delicious. We even had the opportunity to try some home-cooked meal experiences, which were awesome. Overall, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in visiting Bhutan. It was an unforgettable experience, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this beautiful country.

Spirit of Bhutan - 8 Days
The Spirit of Bhutan tour exceeded our expectations and the itinerary we did was better than what had been outlined on TourRadar. There were some fantastic walks, and we took the option to go rafting which was a great experience (at additional cost). Our driver Namgay was extremely humble, and was in touch with the local traditions and culture. His smile made every activity a pleasure. The company can tailor make your holiday to suit your interests. We found it delightful that the owner of the company sat down for coffee and wanted to see how we felt about the tour.
Best of Bhutan Tour- 7 Days Majestic Bhutan Tour
Bhutan is a magical country. It is so unique and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My tour guide was amazing and took great care of me. The hotels I stayed in were great and so was all of the food. The Tiger’s Nest is a bucket list place to go.
Glimpse of Bhutan 5 nights 6 days
We did the Glimpse of Bhutan 5 night 6 days trip in Bhutan. Our guide and driver were amazing! They were professional, entertaining and knowledgeable too. We had a short on time for trip therefore we chose to do the 5 night 6 days tour to Bhutan. This trip covered all the main sightseeing place such as Tashichho Dzong, Tiger's Nest Monastry, Dochu-La pass, Punaha Dzong, the palace of Great Happiness and lots of beautiful scenery, which is what drew us to Bhutan initially. The hotels and food on this tour were wonderful too, definitely exceeded my expectations. Our Guide coordinated perfectly and never had one fault due to miscommunication. Thanks Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks for providing us with good guide and driver. Highly recommended, we'll be back for our next trip with Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks
Bhutan In-depth Culture & Nature Tour
We were absolutely delighted to have tour with this company. From the time when we first contacted the company via email, everything was so seamless and professional. Lhendup is a superb guide and photographer. We have some brilliant memories to take home. We were really lucky to have him. He listens to our comments and adjust the itinary accordingly without any additional cost. After finding out when is our wedding anniversary, Lhendup and Perma went to surprise us during dinner. It makes our wedding anniversary very memorable. Both the guide and driver rather work late then rush us. They are also very attentive and have a brilliant sense of humour. There is one day I laughed so much, I have forgotten how cold it was outside. We would highly recommend this tour company and the guide + driver. Thanks for giving us such a memorable trip and we now fully understand why Bhutan is the happiest place on earth!

I've been on 3 OneSeed expeditions and I have loved every one of them. Each trip was well organized and a breeze to plan for (packing lists are provided). They also take into account the trekker's dietary needs ( I had vegetarian food on all 3 trips-- all delicious meals). The guides were amazing too, they were helpful and great company on long days. I would absolutely travel with them again. The trips I've done are: Epic Patagonia, Kilimanjaro Summit and Safari, and Drunk Path in Bhutan.

Best of Bhutan
Tashi & Kiinshu were wonderful to be around. They even laughed at my bad jokes. Tashi was very smart and could answer any question. This tour was the right amount of time for me, but gauge that for your interests. You may want to stay longer in the country. You can always return but for many this may be a once in a life time journey. The country is very safe, clean, and very advanced when compito a place like Kathmandu. The one thing I caution is to bring all the cash you may need to convert. Licky I always bring emergency cash with me. One of my banks didn’t support the local currency. My second card requires the chip be read in the ATM not the strip. The ATMs only read the strip today (Dec 2019). My bank did tell me a shop could manually enter the number for a purchase but I didn’t try only because I was moving on to many more international stops and I didn’t want to carry purchases. I probably could have shipped but didn’t think at the time. That said exchange rates were very good at the bank and there was no fee other then built in exchange rate. Bhutan is beautiful. You’ll have your evenings free. After about 6. All food was wonderful and I had no stomach issues. I prefer spicy and Bhutan is known for spicy but they were making dishes mild for the white lad from Ireland. Their King is doing a great job. The country is moving in the right direction. Go now instead of later incase they open the country to more tourists. Hopefully they don’t because you don’t want these beautiful places to be overrun with tourists. I have a world eSIM in my iPhone. Not supported in Bhutan but you can buy sim at airport on landing. Sit on the left side of plane if you can on the way in to see the Himalayas.

What people love about bhutan tours.
A must-visit! Itinerary was well-planned but flexible to our needs. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and both the guide and driver were very friendly and helpful. The accommodation ranged from good to excellent. Well-accommodated to dietary requirements. Could not recommend more!
Very well run by the local tour company (Gakyil) . My guide and driver were excellent.(Dev and Tashi) Both had really good knowledge. Tashi my guide gave me a great insight into Budhisim. We also had a lot of fun and many laughs. I highly recommend this tour. Bhutan is a real eye opener. There should be more places like this in this world. Glenn Burnside New Zealand

Our Bhutan trip was one of the greatest and most unforgettable experiences of our lives! Go Bhutan Tours is very well organized with professional and friendly staff, communicates effectively, and takes our wishes into account. We experienced and truly felt the magic as well as spiritual vibes in monasteries. We learned about Buddhism and the royal family in Bhutan, and we immersed ourselves in Bhutanese culture through visits to villages, schools, and homestays. We had very interesting and honest discussions with our guide and driver. We thoroughly enjoyed discovering the authenticity of central and eastern Bhutan.

When we first started planning our trip to Bhutan, we were a bit overwhelmed. There were so many tour companies and itineraries to choose from. However, when we discovered Go Bhutan Tours, we felt like we were on the right track. One of the tour operators guided us through our plans with phone calls before our Bhutan trip and provided us with a thorough and clear travel guide, itineraries, as well as easy-to-understand cost breakdowns and comparisons. Once we arrived, our guide took us out to dinner and checked in with us regularly. The driver couldn't have been kinder and more accommodating. We managed to cover everything on our agenda and even more. Thank you so much!

Transportation
Go Bhutan Tours uses local transportation alternatives and conventional modes of transportation whenever possible because they typically have less of an impact on the environment, help small local businesses, and are far more enjoyable. The type of excursion you choose while on a Bhutan tour package will determine how you get there. Minibus: Due to the weather, a lack of paved roads, and limited public transportation choices, traveling around Bhutan can be challenging. So plan on taking a minibus while you're not hiking.
Culture & Custom
Embark on a journey to explore the fascinating culture and customs of Bhutan with "Go Bhutan Tours." Beyond the awe-inspiring Himalayas lies a land where tradition and modernization harmoniously coexist. Bhutan's unique allure has enticed a growing number of travelers since it opened its doors in 1974, welcoming over 200,000 visitors.
The enchantment of Bhutan is evident in its alpine landscapes, mesmerizing Buddhist architecture, and its enigmatic ambiance. It's a place where Gross National Happiness (GNH) takes precedence over GDP, emphasizing the well-being of its people. Bhutan holds the distinction of being the only nation on Earth with a net negative carbon footprint, a testament to its commitment to preserving the environment, influenced by its Buddhist heritage, which makes up nearly 75% of the population.
In Bhutan, the term that resonates most profoundly is "rich." This nation is rich in history, heritage, and customs, offering a wealth of cultural experiences. As Bhutan continues to evolve, there is a delicate balance to be struck between tradition and the rapid advancement of technology, a transition that will be fascinating to witness. Join our Bhutan Tours to delve into the heart of this rich culture and tradition, and explore the customs that make Bhutan truly unique.
Eating & Drinking
The spicy food of Bhutan is renowned for knocking even the most traveler's socks off. If you prefer things spicy, you might just have reached heaven because most of it is garnished with chilies; but, for someone else, it will be pretty warm. Here are some dishes to watch out for a Bhutan vacation:
These cheese sauce-covered, extremely hot chillies are offered. It’s the traditional dish of Bhutan, where ema is the word for "chili" and datshi is the word for "cheese."
Phak sha pa
Red chile, onion, tomato, ginger, and radish slices are used to stew chopped pork.
The Bhutanese consume a lot of wheat, which is often reddish in hue. This is as a result of its cultivation in the rich Paro Valley soil. This one has a nutty taste and is frequently served with chili and mushrooms.
These Tibetan dumplings are typically served as a snack and are filled with meat, cheese, or veggies. Momos should never be refused.
Red Panda beer
The Bumthang Brewery, which is operated by a Swiss citizen who wed a Bhutanese, produces the famous Red Panda Weiss Beer of Bhutan. The sole export brewery in Bhutan is this one. There is a thin white foam on the beer, which has a murky yellow color. Residents and visitors alike adore this excellent beer.
Plan-based options
Vegetarians will have an easy time traveling to Bhutan because the country does not consume a meal of meat. Because cheese is frequently used in meals, vegans may find it more challenging. Make sure to specify that you want your meals cooked without dairy or margarine. Obviously, vacationing with a local makes everything much simpler. With Go Bhutan Tours, you'll get a local guide who can explain meals and suggest healthy plant-based options.
The most stunning moment to go on a Bhutan tour is the spring periods of mid-March to early May, when rhododendrons and other flowers are in blossom and the temperature has started to warm up, which are often cited as the ideal times to travel. Another great period is in the fall, from September through November, when the sky is predicted to be bright and the hills should be visible. It appears that March/April and September/October are the busiest carnival seasons.
A Bhutan trip will satisfy your desire for high caliber handicrafts and vibrant art. Despite Bhutan's lack of a reputation as a premier shopping location, there are many skilled artists producing high-quality goods here. To be assured that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a great idea to verify with your local customs officers. General terms, the laws governing customs are rigorous in the US and Canada.
Hand-Woven Fabric
In Bhutan, artisanal spinning is at its very best. Visit one of the numerous textile shopping options in the towns of Bhutan to select from a wide variety of vibrant rugs, clothes, shawls, and decorations.
Traditional Music
Consider purchasing a CD of singing monks from Bhutan to use as a musical stress relief when you get home and are back in office daily.
Spiritual Souvenirs
For parents and friends, colorful prayer banners, aromatic candles, and rosary beads make thoughtful presents.
Highlight Festivals & Events
Step into the vibrant tapestry of Bhutan's culture with "Go Bhutan Tours" and immerse yourself in the colorful world of Bhutanese festivals and events. Bhutan is not just about its breathtaking landscapes and ancient traditions; it's also a land of joyous celebrations and major events.
Throughout the year, Bhutan hosts a plethora of festivals that offer a glimpse into the heart and soul of this remarkable nation. From the lively Paro Tsechu to the mystical Punakha Drubchen, these festivals are a window into Bhutan's rich religious and cultural heritage. The Tshechus, or religious festivals, are among the major events in Bhutan, and they are celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm.
Let "Go Bhutan Tours" be your gateway to the enchanting world of Bhutan's festivals and events, where the past and present come together in a joyous celebration of culture and heritage.
Health & Safety
Go Bhutan Tours makes each precaution to make sure the Bhutan vacations are safe, enjoyable, and fun for everyone. The company takes the health and safety of its visitors carefully. We advise all passengers to get the most recent information prior to boarding from their local government or regional travel guide agency.

How To Reach Bhutan?
Earlier, it was difficult to reach Bhutan as the frozen paths in the North and dense jungles in the South. After 1960, Bhutan was made well-connected to various countries by different modes of transport like air, train and road. Here is a detailed list of numerous modes of reaching Bhutan from which you can choose according to your budget and time.
The one and only airport to reach Bhutan is located in Paro namely, Paro International Airport. Apart from this, there is a domestic airport situated in the south-central part of Bhutan called Gelephu Airport. The only airline which operates regular flights from selected places of the world to Bhutan is the National Air Carrier of Bhutan. One of the other ways to reach Bhutan is via Bagdodra Airport. This airport receives many flights from major cities of India as it is not far away from the Bhutanese border and takes only a four-hour drive to reach there. While travelling through plane, you can witness the mesmerizing scene of the Paro Valley and high peak mountains.
There are only three main land borders which tourists have to cross to reach Bhutan, that is, Gelephu, Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar.
Gelephu, situated in the south-central part of Bhutan, is around 250 kms away from Thimpu, the capital city. The journey includes passage via the alpine zone and sub-tropical areas of Bhutan which makes the journey more interesting. The passage crosses three districts and takes ten hours to cover the journey.
Located in the south-west side of Bhutan, Phuentsholing is approximately 170 kms away from the Bagdodra Airport in West Bengal (India). It takes half of the time in comparison with the Gelephu journey.
Samdrup Jongkhar is positioned in the south-east part of Bhutan which is 150 kms away from the capital city of Assam, Guwahati. This three-hour route takes travelers through Mongar, Bumthang, Trongsa and many more places.
It is not at all shocking to know that travelers from India and can also opt for bus services from Kolkata. One can get a direct bus from the Esplanade Station in Kolkata to Phuentsholing. The 18-hour journey is usually comfortable as the bus services are provided by the Royal Bhutanese Government. Besides this, Siliguri has regular bus service to Jaigaon which takes less than four hours to reach there.
Paro International Airport is the only airport in this country that to several countries of the world like India, Europe, Nepal, and Thailand. If vacationers want to take a road route to Bhutan, buses ply from Bhutan to Kolkata, Siliguri, and Phuentsholing, and vice versa. To reach Bhutan by car, tourists can drive through three land border crossings located along the southern border, only from India.
Unfortunately, there is no direct train route to Bhutan. As a result, travelers ultimately have to book a cab or bus from the nearby railway stations. Some of the best options in India are Hasimara, New Jalpaiguri Station and New Alipurduar.
Located in West Bengal, Hasimara is only 17 kms away from Phuentsholing. Travelers can catch Indian railways to reach here. Apart from this, New Jalpaiguri Station in Siliguri is one of the most convenient options from where you can hire direct taxis or buses to reach Jaigaon. Whereas, New Alipurduar is 60 kms away from Jaigaon.

We got to explore the Buddha Point, Dzong Museum and Takin Zoo in Thimpu. We tried some of the local cuisines there and the best dishes were Kewa Datshi with rice and Ema Datshi. We also included Paro, another major city in Bhutan, in our itinerary where we went to Drukgyal Dzong. We had saved the best for last - trek to the Tiger’s Nest. Bhutan Trekking Tours – Best Time for Trekking in Bhutan
Most of the Bhutan trekking holidays happen in the spring or autumn because the weather is extremely pleasant during those seasons. It has been observed that the best period for trekking is from late September to mid-November, while the second best time for high-altitude hiking in Bhutan is from late March to mid-May.
Spring Season
The greatest time to go trekking is still in the spring, even though it occasionally rains, especially in May when the temperature is approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Rhododendron woods are in flower during this time, and if you're lucky, your Bhutan trekking tours will be well worth it because you'll get to view the rare blue poppy.
Summer Season
Summer is generally not the ideal season for Bhutan hiking tours but some people still enjoy trekking during this season. Allow yourself to take part in Bhutan trekking trips in the summer, when the days tend to be clear and lush if you want to experience a serene atmosphere. Between July and August, there are typically showers every day; however, the heavier downpours frequently happen at night, so you may still happily enjoy your hikes.
Autumn Season
The best season to go hiking in Bhutan is in the autumn since the weather is quite consistent and the sky is always clear and blue. There aren't many clouds in the sky, therefore at night, you can see the most amazing view of the Himalayan parks decorated with a starry sky. In general, you should have fun hiking in Bhutan at this time.
Winter Season
Even while winter may not be the ideal season for most activities, Bhutan has some excellent hiking paths, like Samtegang Nabji Korphu and Manas Trek. Most paths are under heavy snowfall during that time (late November to early March), and the passes are nearly saturated with snow. On the other hand, low areas have warmer temperatures, which is a little better for hikes. Overall, there is no ideal time to go on a Bhutan trekking tour; therefore, you can go trekking all year round.
Bhutan Trekking Tips – Information and Guide
It's crucial to realize that you'll be trekking with very little oxygen available at this type of altitude since many of the Bhutan trekking paths will take you across high mountain passes and reach heights of more than 5,000 meters. If not treated seriously, altitude sickness poses a very significant risk to one's health and, in rare situations, can even be fatal. Regardless of the route you choose, it's critical to plan and ensure you have all the safety-related trekking gear you'll need. If you are not a resident of Bangladesh, India, or the Maldives, you must obtain a visa as well as a trekking permit from a Bhutanese travel firm that is authorised to operate there. For larger trekking parties, discounts on the daily visa charge are typically available. Although English is the majority language in Bhutan, communication shouldn't be a problem despite Dzongkha being the official language. Since the only places with ATMs are the major towns, you should always bring cash with you since ngultrum is the local currency.
Necessary Trekking Gears
Even though Bhutan's peaceful tours and treks continue to supply trekking necessities like tents and cooking utensils on the trek route, there are still several items that are not available. You must bring all additional necessary trekking equipment because you would never want to get stuck in high altitudes especially due to a lack of trekking gear or necessary items. Additionally, the items on the list below are quite helpful, and the majority of them are required for a lengthy walk.
General trekking items
Some of the most Socks trekking items that are generally required in all types of trekking are, Trekking or running shoes, Camps shoes or Thongs Clothing, Sun hat, Underwear, T-shirts/ blouses, Pants (trekking pants), Waterproof jacket, raincoat or umbrella, Short or skirt (hiking), Jump/ Pile jacket, Down/ Fibre-filled jacket, Rucksack, Sleeping bag, Water bottle, Torch etc
Special Equipment for Bhutan Treks
Mountain trekking boots, Socks, Long underwear, Woolen hat, Gloves, Long gaiter, Insulating pants, Nylon windbreakers, Photography Equipment, Lenses and Camera, Lenses cleaning, Film, Compass, Binoculars, Thermometer, some books to read in spare time, Sunglasses and Sunblock
Will the Bhutan Trekking Trip suit me?
As it has been discussed in length previously Bhutan trekking is all about trekking in difficult terrains which is very much physically demanding and requires a lot of mental and physical strength. Mountains in Bhutan have steep valleys and are in very high altitudes where the climate changes frequently. As far as adapting to these tough situations is concerned, it all depends upon your physical and mental strength as well as fitness. Many elderly people who are physically fit can sail through the trekking journey while some young people give up due to lack of fitness. It is always advised to travel in a group of 8-10 people especially when you are doing a trekking trip so that everybody can motivate everybody else in the team in difficult terrains. Since tour guides mostly accompany groups during their trekking journey, you should not be worried about medical problems as they have emergency medical kits and services available with them 24*7. People with altitude sickness and motion sickness must avoid trekking trips in the mountains as they will be struggling with their health all the time and will not be able to enjoy the trip to its fullest. Apart from some special sicknesses, most people with good mental and physical health can take these trips because Bhutan trekking trips are considered to be one of the best trekking trips in the world and people who can take up, should go and see some of the most beautiful mountains, valleys and breath-taking sceneries of their lives in Bhutan. The gears and necessary equipment mentioned above must be carried throughout the trip so that the whole journey is comfortable and there are no discomforts whatsoever due to health and other emergencies.

The months of October and November are ideal for Bhutan trekking tours, as are the end of March through the middle of May. Bhutan only has a short, 1 1/2 month-long trekking season during the first part of the year.
Due to Bhutan's mountainous terrain in the Himalayas, the treks in Bhutan are characterized by continuous elevation changes, either uphill or downhill. Furthermore, the surroundings undergo constant transformations and maintain lower temperatures.
According to professionals from Bhutan peaceful tours and treks, you must maintain a healthy physical and mental state by engaging in different physical activities. Train yourself to get a good night's sleep, and drink enough water or other liquids to stay hydrated.
Since the terrain is hilly in Bhutan and the weather is constantly changing, you must bring all necessary and emergency items like medicines, sunscreen, trekking boots, warm clothes, flashlight and raincoat in your Bhutan trekking holidays
One of the major reasons why trekking in Bhutan is extremely popular is because it offers you the opportunity to visit remote mountainous regions of the Eastern Himalayas which looks and feel astonishing
Thimphu Tshechu, Paro Tshechu, Jambay Lhakhang Drup Festival, Haa Summer Festival and Punakha Drubchen are the top festivals in Bhutan that travellers going for Bhutan festival tours must not miss.
Tshechu is celebrated on the tenth day of a month of the Lunar Calendar, to honour Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who brought a Tantric form of Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century
When visiting Bhutan, you may always take in a cultural event because there are an astounding amount of festivals held there all year long. However, it is advised to check the most recent Bhutan festival calendar before you travel if you want to attend specific festivals.
Apart from the citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, the rest of the tourists must get a visa to enter Butuan.
It is suggested that you choose a lesser-known festival if you want a more personal experience of the events. Do not broach taboo or some sensitive matters, even though your tour guide will sincerely introduce Bhutan's religion, culture, and other things you might be interested in learning about.

FAQs on Bhutan Tour Packages
Do we need a visa to travel to bhutan, which are the best places to visit in bhutan, what is the best time to visit bhutan, how to reach bhutan.
- By Air: The Paro International Airport is the only airport catering to and fro flights in Bhutan. Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Bodhgaya, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Kathmandu and Dhak are some of the places that have connecting flights to Pato through Druk Airlines.
- By Road: There are buses , taxis that start from Kolkata to the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing. These transportations help in reaching the Bhutan Border. Another way is driving upto the any one of the three borders( Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkha) and taking a permit at the border to enter.
- By Train: There are no direct trains connecting to Bhutan, however you can take a train upto Siliguri, New Alipurduar, Hasimara or New Jalpaiguri (India) and then board a bus or cab to Phuentsholing.

Bhutan Tour Packages FAQ
At least 5 days are necessary if you want to visit all the most popular tourist attractions in Bhutan, such as the Taktsang Monastery (Tiger Nest Monastery), National Museum and Tashichho Dzong. Around 7 days are needed if you want to travel to some remote area, such as the Haa Valley. Around 10 days are needed if you want to trek on the mountains and valleys in Bhutan. Some of our customers even spent 30 days, the longest staying time allowed for tourists, exploring over two thirds of the land of the country.
It is more unlikely to have altitude sickness in Bhutan than most other high-altitude areas. There are two reasons.
First, most tourist attractions in Bhutan are located in the middle area of Bhutan, where the altitude is between 2000 meters and 3000 meters. As you may have known, most people will have altitude sickness only when they are in areas, where the altitude is over 3000 meters.
Second, the percentage of forest cover in Bhutan is over 72.5%. So, the oxygen content in air is higher than most other high-altitude area.
Tipping is recommended but not required . The Bhutan government do not require tourists to tip drivers, tour guides, waiters and other local people who will serve you, because their income is not bad. However, tipping is still recommended, because if you tip them, they will offer even better service, especially for hiking and mountaineering itineraries, you might need porters and cooks, and they need to carry heavy luggage or cooking utensils during the tour.
Some of our customers even tip their tour guides and drivers prior to the start of their tour.
The Electronic visa is the most popular type of visa for tourists who want to travel to Bhutan. You just need to send us the photocopy of your passport (the page with your photo). You can also apply for a Bhutan visa in India or Nepal, where there are Bhutan embassies. Citizens of India, Bangladesh and Maldives can travel to Bhutan without applying for a visa.
Although it is not difficult for tourists to apply for a Bhutan visa, tourists are not allowed to travel to Bhutan on their own. They must book a tour with a licensed local travel agency, so please check out our Bhutan tour packages, it would be a great honor for us to arrange a Bhutan tour for you!
Like China and India, beef, pork, vegetable and rice are the most-eaten food in Bhutan. There almost no polluted crops in Bhutan, because local people almost use no pesticide. Milk or red tea and wine brewed with highland barley, wheat or corn are the major beverage in Bhutan.
Both western and local cuisines are available in Bhutan. Local people like pepper, but they seldom use pepper to cook for tourists. If you also like pepper, please feel free to let your tour guides know. They will ask the restaurants to prepare spicy food for you.
The best way to travel to Bhutan is taking a plane to Paro, where Bhutan's only international airport is located in, from Thailand, India, Nepal, Bangladesh or Singapore. Druk Air, the Royal Bhutan Airlines, is the only carrier for the international flights to Bhutan
The Indian cities, where there are flights to Bhutan, are Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Gaya and Guwahati. Other Cities, where there are flights to Bhutan, are Bangkok (Thailand), Kathmandu (Nepal), Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Changi (Singapore).
Tourists can also travel to Bhutan from India by road, but the condition of the roads is not good, so this way is not recommended.
The best times to travel to Bhutan are March , April , May , June , September and October . Based on the differences of altitudes, Bhutan is divided into north, middle and south parts. The altitude of the north part is over 3000 meters and very cold, while the south part is only around 1500 meters above the sea level and very wet and hot. Fortunately, most tourist attractions are in the middle part, where enjoys mild climate and is suitable for tourism all year round. However, the climate of the 5 months listed above is even more delightful, so tourists will get the best experience if they travel to Bhutan in those 5 months.
Bhutan Tour Packages Reviews
Best luxury tour in Bhutan
Booked the luxury tour to Bhutan through them… Excellent arrangement and perfect with the choice of hotels and sightseeing.. Tony Yin our Agent was very good in understanding the requirements.
A wonderful family trip for us
My parents and I enjoyed it a lot! Kyle is always very responsive to my questions — his recommendations and advice also turned out to be very helpful. Our tourist guide, Rinzin was also great. He is fluent in English and Chinese, so he communicated with my parents very well. The itinerary for each day was clear and well-arranged. Each meal was taken care of with a lot of effort. We tried plenty of healthy organic vegetable products from Bhutan. Besides, we were lucky to have a very experienced driver. I didn't feel dizzy at all, even after the trips across the mountains.
Unforgettable
We chose Asia Odyssey Travel as it was the best offer that we have found in terms of value and what they have offered as a travel experience. We booked a 5 day tour for Bhutan and the experience did not disappoint us in any way. We were taken good care of trough all the stages starting with the booking itself, itinerary, visa and all the details for pick up for airport. We have visited National Memorial Chorten,Takin Sanctuary,Taktshang (Tiger’s nest), Punakha Dzong (just to name the most important ones) and we were impressed by the beauty of the country as well as how friendly our guide was.
This will be an experience that we will not forget!
I strongly recommend it for everyone who is in search of an unique destination.
Hassle free tour
They were very responsive to all my questions even though we are different timezone. They handle all the visa requirements etc and food arrangements and hotels . I did not have to worry about any of those things I just show up and enjoy the tour. Everything was hassle free.
Amazing Bhutan
I was planning a trip of a lifetime to Bhutan when I stumbled upon Asia Odyssey Travel with raving reviews. I immediately sent an inquiry and was promptly answered by Isaac Wei, representative of the agency. I told him that I was planning a 4 day trip to Bhutan. Isaac sent me the itinerary he prepared for our 4 day trip including places to see, hotel information and other details. He is very responsive to all my inquiries and clarifications. I then approved and paid for our tour. They also prepared our visa.
Upon arrival in Bhutan, we were welcomed by our wonderful tour guide, Tashi and Pema. They gave us white scarf to officially welcome us in Bhutan. They immediately started the tour. The hotels provided were decent with friendly staff.
Our tour was well thought out. Everything was explained to us. Tashi was very knowledgeable and very accommodating, The highlight of the trip was the trek to Tiger's Nest. It was surreal, being inside the monastery in Tiger's Nest.
We had the trip of a lifetime! A memory that I will forever cherish.
Please support Asia Odyssey Travel, you will never be disappointed. Make sure you request for Tashi and Pema as your tour guides.
Breathtaking Beauty of Bhutan
At the beginning, I was a bit hesitant to book Bhutan's tour thru an online travel agency. But Asia Odyssey Travel turns out to be the right choice for this trip!
We appreciate Jojo's quick response to our inquiries including tailoring the itineraries to our requests. Our guide, Jigme Yoedzer, and our driver, Phub Gyeltshen, were wonderful and very accommodating in catering to our pace, preferred excursions and likings.
Bhutan is a such beautiful country with strong belief of living in harmony with nature. A true gem in this modern world. We had a great time during our trip and enjoyed the scenery very much.
Kudos to the wonderful team of Asia Odyssey Tour - Jojo, Jigme & Phub!!
Highly recommended!!
Espectacular viaje a Butan!!!!
Asia Odissey service is simple outstanding!!! Everything went as planned, according to schedule, and with little extra amazing surprises on top of what we book that made it even better.
Long story short, our only duty during the trip was to enjoy it, they took care of everything since we start planning our trip.
An experience for the lifetime
Great trip with great guides
To be honest, I was a little reluctant to book with Asia Odyssey Travel as they are not US based and the price was much lower than other tours. But I took a chance and very happy that I did. Asia Odyssey Travel did a great job start to finish. Prior to leaving for our tour, Kyle was in frequent contact with a very quick response time.
And once there, our tour guide (Karma) driver (Yeshi) were fantastic. They tailored our excursions to our liking. Very knowledgeable and finny! They even carried my camera gear to the Tigers nest as it was quite a hike for me being 68 years old. In addition to be in very interesting, they were very fun. Bhutan is a wonderful country and Karma and Yeshi made us feel right at home. They even invited us to one of their local hangouts one evening to play snookers. Highly recommend Asia Odyssey Travel.
Best planning
Great help in planning my trip even though I screwed up and accidentally damaged my passport and needed to get a new one. Had no problems charging dates of my trip and helping with all the little hiccups with the planned. Thanks
Beautiful and majestic
The country scenery, the people, from the tour guide, driver, and hotel service staff were wonderful. We love the experience of having lunch and visiting the home of one of the villagers. The tour guide Sherub really made sure we were comfortable and went with our pace. Thank you for the unforgettable memories.
Asia Odyssey helped me fulfill a dream…
Asia Odyssey helped me fulfill a dream to visit Bhutan -the Kingdom of happiness. And that it was. From the wonderful organisation of Kyle with quick responses - nothing was too difficult to do or organise. And Asia odyssey Travel Company compilation of the trip and logistics was wonderful and pleasant. Visiting the Kingdom of Bhutan was easy visa, easy travel, and happiness plus. Morgan
The best experience I have!
I have booked for a family trip ( my elder mother+ 2 toddlers kids + me and my sister= 5 persons). We came all the way from France to Bangkok to Bhutan.
Our tour person Mr Tony Yin is a professional and efficient person. He makes sure all things go smoothly and he replies my WhatsApp messages each time when necessary.
When arriving at Paro airport (Bhutan), our local tour guide Mr Pema very very very gentle and polite, and he waited us there since 2 hours before our arrival. Our local driver , Mr Karma is a lovely man, strong man and stable, we respect him alot as he knows how to drive on the difficult roads in Bhutan.
The most touching part is Mr Pema and Mr karma accompanied us all the way to the Taktshang monastery (tiger's nest) up to the hill and then down to the base! They carried our kids on them and our things. Bhutan trip is an unforgettable experience, because local people are educated, yet modest, rich in culture and environmentally preserved, compassion, sharing , love and happiness, although they are materially poor conditions ! I would recommend everyone to follow this tour to Bhutan, to give our children a good teaching of authentic way of living.
Memorable trip
One of the best trips I ever had, I give five stars for the professionalism and good itinerary. I had a great informatory trip. The guid was very knowledgeable with all part of and the city. His historic background is rich and coming from the heart. Our driver was very careful and patient with traffic and both were very prompt. One small hiccup in one of the hotels (Which I don’t think they have control off) that they were offering hot water from 6pm-11pm. And 6am -9 am everyday and had no shampoo. Other than that food was ok and service was good. I highly recommend this travel agency, if you go to Bhutan make sure to use them.
Amazing trip to one of the most secluded countries
I was a little bit worried at first because I don't know anyone from Bhutan, and it was hard to find information on the internet. But Asia Odyssey did not disappoint. The consultant (Kyle) is very patient and cater all my requests (including proof of company incorporation).
I was supposedly in the group tour, but since my flight was canceled (by the airlines, not Asia Odyssey's fault) they even changed my tour to private!
Bhutan Holiday
Amazing country organised by Asia Odyssey Travel. A country with a different way of life. Very friendly people and had a great guide (Pema) and driver which made the holiday. I would recommend this country to anyone. Tigers nest was the pinnacle of the holiday.
Great tour company. Excellent service.
My 6 nights tour in Bhutan was perfectly organized. Clear and easy communication before the tour. Our tour guide Dorji and driver Kishore were extremely helpful, courteous, knowledgable, and fun. We had an amazing time seeing the beautiful, green, and peaceful country. We were taken to local places and festivals to communicate with the beautiful people of Bhutan and join their traditional activities. Thank you for these unforgettable moments. I would love to travel with Asia Odyssey Travel again.
Bhutan exceeded all expectations
Bhutan is a beautiful country, my family and I found the tour had great value for money. Everything was included while with world-class service. We had our three children with us, and Asia Odyssey Travel made a large effort to ensure the trip was as enjoyable for them as it was for us. Our guide and driver were awesome, they work hard to make sure all pick-ups, meals, hotels, driving, and sightseeing were comfortable, and they were flexible for any additional requests. Our family had a truly enjoyable 7-day tour in Bhutan. I would really advise anyone to make use of the service of this company.
Unforgettable trip to Bhutan, highly recommended.
We just completed a trip to Paro, Thimpu, and Punakha for our New Year holiday. From the time I got in contact with Kyle of Asia Odyssey Travel for an inquiry to the end of our tour, everything was smooth and efficient. Though it was a little cold in winter, we did enjoy the bright and sunny days, hotels with lower prices, and fewer tourists. Kyle was flexible on itinerary design for our requests. Our guide, Kishore, was knowledgeable about history, religion, culture, flora, and even birds. Our driver, Dago, was skilled, safe, and reliable. Overall, we would not hesitate to recommend Kyle and his team, an excellent company to choose for your trip to Bhutan!
7 Days Magical Western Bhutan Tour
My husband and I booked a 7 days private trip with Asia Odyssey Travel. They proved well worth our trust by realizing our wish list perfectly. We enjoyed beautiful landscapes, valleys, Dzongs, monasteries, cities, and villages. We also attended the annual festivities, the traditional Bhutan dresses were amazing. We tried the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, it was very comfortable. We felt very satisfied with all their arrangements, the hotels couldn't be nicer, the service couldn't be better. Highly recommended.
Amazing experience in real Bhutan
As someone who has traveled the world, I can say without hesitation that this was one of the best tour experiences I've ever had. The hotels are very well located, comfortable, and carefully chosen for their high service standards. Our guide was outstanding and knowledgeable about culture, religion, and history. He was flexible to adjust the itinerary and make sure everything runs smoothly. I cannot recommend this company highly enough! Thank you for showing us a real Bhutan that is beyond my expectations.

best travel agent
The most effective and highly recommended travel and ticketing agent in Bhutan. The owner/CEO is way too generous and humble to explain the details of route repeatedly with no hesitation. The service provided by Mr. PL Sharma is certainly among the best services among many. He personally took out the time apart from his working days to brief us on the route in weekend, so that we do not get messed up while in transit flight. We also had a constant touch with him during our journey and he has been very approachable even virtually with his prompt response. Highly recommended because it is with no doubt that Bhutan Travel Center is the best service provider with such humble founder.

What our travelers had to say.
This November, I spent 4 days exploring Bhutan. In that time I came to realise just how special this unique kingdom is and I hope to convey that realisation in this video. My trip was organised by Raven Tours and Treks. I had my own private guide who was very well informed and had extensive knowledge to answer all my questions – no matter if they were political, religious or even personal. ”

Bhutan Tours & Holidays
Bhutan measures its success by Gross National Happiness and by the end of your Intrepid tour, you’ll have contributed more than your fair share of smiles to the cause.
This tiny Himalayan kingdom does things differently. Having only been open to visitors for 45 years, Bhutan puts its environment, culture and wellbeing ahead of economics. This place absorbs more carbon than it creates and a Bhutan tour is perfect for trekkers, nature-lovers and Buddhist pilgrims. From the jaw-dropping Tiger’s Nest to the prayer halls of Gangte Goemba, you’ll experience moments – and people – that make happiness seem like the norm, not a pursuit.

Culture and customs.
If travellers can tear their eyes away from the backdrop of the mighty Himalaya, they’ll discover a rich, remarkable culture in Bhutan that is quickly modernising yet truly anchored in tradition.
Since opening up to travellers in 1974, Bhutan has seen visitor numbers rise from just a couple of hundred to upwards of 200,000. The appeal is obvious: pristine alpine landscapes, magnificent Buddhist architecture and an air of mystery that pulls travellers in, not to mention the much-discussed Gross National Happiness used to measure national wellbeing, which is prioritised over GDP.
Bhutan is the only country in the world to be carbon negative. Since 2007 the country has been run by a democratic government, with three separate parties having won the three national elections since. Approximately 75 per cent of the population are Buddhist and these religious values are used to guide government policy along with prioritising sustainability and cultural preservation.
In society, the Bhutanese follow ‘driglam namzha’, a traditional etiquette supporting the respect for authority, devotion to family and a dedication to civic duty. The flag, which was adopted in 1965, features the country’s emblem of the Thunder Dragon on a backdrop of golden yellow and orange. The yellow represents the king and his secular power, while the orange represents Buddhism. The dragon holds jewels in each of his claws, representing the wealth of the nation.
And it’s the word ‘wealth’ that perhaps describes Bhutan best. A wealth of tradition, of culture, of history. A wealth of beauty, of happiness, of prosperity. In the future, given the way the country has been progressing, there’ll no doubt be a large amount of wealth brought in by more and more tourists. What will be interesting is how Bhutan manages to balance its age-old traditions with its quickening march towards modernity.
History and government
Early history.
As one of the few countries in the world to have never been conquered or occupied by another, Bhutan has a long history of independent governance. Although its early history is shrouded in mystery, Bhutan is thought to have been inhabited from as early as 2000BC. Tibetan Buddhism was introduced into the region around the 9th century, when many Tibetans fled neighbouring Tibet to seek refuge in Bhutan.
The leadership and governance of Bhutan has always been linked to its religion, and this continues in today’s political, legal and religious leadership of the country. The 16th and 17th centuries saw some conflict with Tibet, although Bhutan was never officially taken over by its neighbour. External threats from the British presented themselves in the 18th and 19th centuries; however, once again Bhutan was never officially controlled or governed by an external power.
Recent history
In the last 40 years, Bhutan has had many ‘firsts’. Bhutan introduced a new monetary system and currency in 1974 and also opened up its borders to welcome foreign tourists in the same year. By 2000, Bhutan had its first television set and internet cafe, and by 2004 Bhutan became the first country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco products. Bhutan’s first constitution was drawn up in 2005, and its first democratic multi-party election was held in 2008, when the constitution was finally ratified. It has held two democratic elections since.
Today, Bhutan’s economy relies mainly on tourism, agriculture and forestry, although ‘Gross National Happiness’ continues to be valued more than economic abundance or growth in domestic product. Bhutan has been held up as an example of what a country can be when it puts culture, the environment and wellbeing ahead of economic development, but there are challenges too: after the new government took control in 2013, the prime minister admitted that the focus on the Gross National Happiness measure sometimes distracted from addressing Bhutan’s problems including unemployment, corruption and poverty.
Eating and drinking
Bhutan is famous for its spicy cuisine that’ll knock the socks off the most hardy traveller. Almost everything is served with chillies, so if you like things spicy, you may just have found heaven – for others it’ll be hotter than hell.
A few dishes to look out for
- Ema datshi These are very hot chillies served in a cheese sauce. This is Bhutan’s national dish, with ema translating as ‘chilli’ and ‘datshi’ as cheese.
- Phak sha pa Sliced pork stewed using red chilli, onion, tomato, ginger and sliced radish.
- Red rice The Bhutanese eat loads of rice and you’ll notice that the rice is usually a reddish colour. This is because it’s grown in the fertile Paro Valley soil. It has a nutty flavour and is typically paired with mushrooms and chilli.
- Momos These Tibetan dumplings are filled with meat, cheese or vegetables and are generally served up as a snack. Never say to no-no to a Momo.
- Red Panda beer The Red Panda Brewery, which is Bhutan’s first, was started by a man named Fritz Maurer who came to Bhutan from Switzerland after answering a newspaper ad for a qualified cheesemaker. Not only does he make Swiss cheese, he also produces this hefeweizen beer.
Plant-based options
Vegetarians will find travelling through Bhutan easy as meat does not play a huge part in the Bhutanese diet. Vegans may have a more difficult time as dishes will often come with cheese. Be sure to ask that your dish is prepared without butter or cheese.
Of course, this is all a lot easier when you’re travelling with a local. If you travel with Intrepid, you’ll have a local leader who can help you decipher menus and recommend good plant-based choices.
Geography and environment
This landlocked kingdom may occupy a small space on the world globe but there’s nothing small about the mountains that lie within. Sharing borders with China and India, Bhutan is known as 'The Switzerland of Asia' for its mountainous topography and similarity to Swiss landscapes.
Bhutan has largely resisted overdevelopment, which has left much of its natural environment intact. As a result of this, Bhutan is one of the most species-rich countries in the world – with hundreds of species of mammals, birds and plants calling the Bhutanese valleys, mountains and meadows home. Endangered red pandas and snow leopards can be found in Bhutan as well as a huge variety of wild flowers and birds.
The country can be divided into three areas. In the south, you’ll find the lowlands fronting the Indian border, which enjoy a subtropical climate. This region sees monsoonal rains from June to mid-October and mild winters through December, January and February.
Travel north and the climate becomes progressively colder as the Himalaya rise. The central belt of the country, in the lower foothills of the Himalaya, features cold, dry winters and warm summers with monsoonal rains on the southern sides, while the valleys experience less rainfall thanks to the mountains’ protection.
In the northern regions, as the Himalaya rise above 2500 metres (8202 feet), the winters are cold and while the summer can be warm, the valleys are generally protected against monsoonal rain. The temperatures turn freezing as you reach the China-Tibet border, with the mountains rising to a high point at Gangkhar Puensum (7570 m/24,480 ft) – the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.
If you’re after top quality handicrafts and colourful art, then Bhutan will delight. While Bhutan isn’t known as a top shopping destination, there are many talented artisans creating good quality souvenirs to buy here.
It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.
- Hand-woven fabric Traditional weaving is at its very best in Bhutan. Choose from colourful rugs, clothing, blankets and accessories when visiting one of the many textile stores and boutiques in Bhutan’s cities.
- Traditional music Why not pick up a CD of Bhutanese harmonies, or chanting monks, as a melodic stress-buster for when you’re back at home and in work mode.
- Spiritual souvenirs Vibrant prayer flags, fragrant incense and prayer beads make meaningful gifts for friends and family back home.
Festival and events
Bhutan's festival calendar is packed with colourful occassions filled with celebrations and dancing.
Paro Spring Festival (Paro Tshechu)
The people of Paro welcome the start of spring with five days of cultural and spiritual celebration. Locals shake off the winter blues by indulging in sword dancing, drumming and feasting. Expect to see stirring rituals, colourful clothing and touching displays of faith if you’re lucky enough to travel during this time.
Thimphu Festival (Thimphu Tschechu)
This three-day festival is meant to be highly auspicious to all who attend. Bhutanese people travel from all over to attend this spiritual celebration that features prayers and rituals to invoke the gods as well as traditional dance, costume and theatre. This highly joyous time gives travellers an important insight into Bhutan’s culture and the chance to mingle with locals.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Bhutan experiences monsoonal weather between June and August and consequently is not a particularly pleasant time to visit the country.
The best times to visit are the shoulder seasons of March to May and September to November, with the later months being particularly pleasant as rainfall is lower and the views tend to be clearer.
December to February sees snowfall in many areas but it can be a beautiful time to visit thanks to the snow covering the mountainous landscape.
Is it safe to visit Bhutan?
Yes, it is safe to visit Bhutan. The crime rate in Bhutan is low although petty crime does happen. Travellers should be alert and keep an eye on their belongings, particularly in crowded or well-touristed areas.
If you are visiting high-altitude areas be sure to discuss altitude sickness with a doctor and plan accordingly. Flooding and landslides occur during the monsoon period (June–September) so follow local advice and check with your tour operator for disruptions.
Do I need a visa to travel to Bhutan?
All nationalities require a visa for Bhutan and, at this stage, travellers can only enter as part of a group visa on a tour. Independent visas are not issued and the cost of the visa is included in your tour. If you are travelling with Intrepid, please provide your booking agent with the following information for us to apply for your group visa:
- a scanned colour copy of the photo page of your passport (consisting of both the flip pages)
- full name as per passport
- date of birth
- nationality
- passport number & date of issue/expiry,
- email address you will access while travelling
- arrival and departure flight details
Due to the controlled nature of travel in Bhutan the group visa can only be submitted once we have the above details from ALL travellers in the group. Failure to advise any of the information as above can slow the visa issuing process and delay the visa for the whole group.
Visas are generally issued within 5 days of departure and as close as 48 hours prior to travel into the country. We will send your group visa to your travelling email address. Please print this visa and carry with you as you will need it at the time of boarding your Bhutan flight.
You must show the copy of your Bhutan group visa at the check-in for your flight to Bhutan and on arrival at immigration in Bhutan where you will have a Bhutan entry stamp placed into your passport.
Is tipping customary in Bhutan?
Tipping isn’t compulsory in Bhutan, but many people who work in tourism are accustomed to receiving tips so it's wise to set aside a small amount to show your appreciation for drivers, cooks and other service workers. Most hotels and restaurants will include a service fee in the final bill.
Your local leader may discuss the idea of running a group tipping kitty on the first day of your trip. In a group tipping kitty, everybody contributes an equal amount at the start of the tour that your leader uses to tip drivers, local guides and hotel staff on your behalf. The leader will keep a running record of all monies spent, which can be checked at any time. Any money remaining at the end of the tour is returned to group members.
This is often the easiest way to avoid the hassle of needing small change and knowing when and what is an appropriate amount to tip. Participation in this kitty is optional, and you are welcome to manage your own tipping separately if you prefer. Please note the tipping kitty excludes tips for your tour leader.
What is the internet access like in Bhutan?
Most tourist hotels will have free wifi, as will many restaurants or cafes in Bhutan’s larger cities. It’s possible to buy a local SIM though internet access will be limited in the remote and mountainous regions.

Please note that coverage will be limited in more remote areas.

What will it cost for a...?
Because of Bhutan’s unique tourism regulations, all meals are included in tour group itineraries. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Bhutan?
Credit cards are accepted are large hotels and the bigger stores but a heavy surcharge often applies. Keep in mind that tours in Bhutan are fully prepaid and include all meals and transport, so your only spending money should be for souvenirs, snacks and drinks. It’s best to bring and use US dollars for large purchases.

What is the weather like in Bhutan?
Bhutan’s weather varies depending on your location and the time of year.
In the capital, Thimphu, the temperature averages from 5°C (41°F) in January to 20°C (68°F) in the summertime. This summer period, from June–August, also sees the monsoonal rains arrive. The nearby city of Paro experiences a similar climate.
The city of Punakha, which is located at 1300 metres (4250 feet), has a warmer climate than Thimphu. The average temperature ranges from 11°C (75°F) in winter to 24°C (75°F) in the summertime. Because of the mountainous terrain, the rains here generally affect the southern side while the valleys experience less intense rainfall.

Is Bhutan safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Bhutan, like most Asian countries, is not particularly appreciative of public displays of affection regardless of sexual orientation.
Homosexuality has been illegal in Bhutan since 2004, but in 2019 a bill was passed to decriminalise what was known as ‘unnatural sex’.
LGBTQIA+ people are generally accepted in Bhutan but work still needs to be done to change social attitudes towards those that identify differently.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
Is Bhutan accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Travelling through Bhutan is difficult for those with physical disabilities. There are only a few hotels that have accessible rooms and bathrooms, and it’s rare that buildings will have been adapted for accessibility issues. That said, all travel through Bhutan must be done through a tour group so if you’re interested in travelling there then Intrepid will do all it can to make that dream a reality
As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What to wear in Bhutan
During winter, if travelling to high altitude areas, you’ll need cold-weather gear, thermals, good waterproof boots and a warm/windproof jacket. If you’re not taking on an alpine trek, however, warm clothes are necessary for the evening but a fleece and windbreaker should suffice during the day.
In the summertime, lightweight clothing is best along with a raincoat, as well as a jumper for the evening. You may add warmer clothes if heading into the higher reaches of the Himalaya, including a beanie, gloves, scarf and down jacket.

The Best Time to Visit Bhutan
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons to visit the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. In spring, the temperatures range between 3°C to 25°C, while in autumn they hover between 10°C to 23°C. Even with the wild variations in temperatures, these two are the best seasons to be in Bhutan, because it doesn’t rain. Bhutan receives most of its rainfall during summer and it snows during winter. The mild weather of the shoulder seasons is perfect and the best time to visit Bhutan for sightseeing and exploring the wild beauty of Bhutan.
Not only can you get your sightseeing done without any interruptions, but you also find all the main tourist attractions open during these two seasons. Some parts of the country may become inaccessible due to heavy rains and snowfall during summer and winter respectively. Summer is still a good time to visit Bhutan if you can brave the rains and settle for a curtailed itinerary. But the subzero winter temperatures and the snow will keep most of the travellers away during the season.
In spring you can join the locals in celebrating the Paro Festival, Gomkora Festival and the Ura Yakchoe. Autumn has a bigger spread of celebrations with festivals such as Thimphu Tshechu, Wangdue Tshechu, Tamzing Phala Choetpa, Jambay Lhakhang Tshechu, Jomolhari Mountain Festival and the Black Necked Crane Festival.
How to Reach Bhutan
You can reach Bhutan by air and road from India. There is no direct rail connectivity. The fastest way to reach Bhutan is by air. Though Bhutan has many domestic airports, Paro International Airport is the sole gateway into Bhutan by air from outside. Druk Air, Bhutan’s national airline, operates regular flights from Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati, Gaya, Delhi and Mumbai. Among these only Kolkata enjoys direct connectivity to Paro. The rest all offer connecting flights. Kolkata also has the most frequent of flights.
A road trip into Bhutan is the most popular way to get into the country. You have a choice of 3 points of entry into Bhutan from India:
- Jaigaon - Phuentsholing Border
- Samdrup Jongkhar
Out of these, The Jaigaon - Phuentsholing border is by far the most popular option. It is the most easily accessible border crossing, and this is also where you get the entry permit quite easily. All Indian citizens travelling to Bhutan must obtain an ‘Entry Permit’ from the Immigration Office of the Royal Government of Bhutan. This entry permit will allow you to explore Paro and Thimphu only. To venture further into the country, you must get a ‘Special Area Permit’ from the Royal Government of Bhutan Immigration Office located in Thimphu.
You can either drive yourself, hire a taxi or hop on to a bus. Private taxis and buses are available from Bagdogra, New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri and Kolkata. At 18 hours, Kolkata to Phuentsholing is the longest bus journey while it takes around 4 hours from Bagdogra and Siliguri.
Where to Go in Bhutan
Bhutan is a deceptively tiny kingdom with a whole lot of places to explore. From monasteries to national parks and museums, here are some of the best places to visit in Bhutan.
Tiger’s Nest Monastery:
This is, without a doubt, the most iconic and the holiest place to visit in Bhutan. It is the sacred monastery of the Guru Rinpoche and is a place of pilgrimage for the locals. Legends say that Guru Rinpoche rode a tiger to this location and spent three months in meditation. Hugging the cliff face above the Paro Valley, it offers a stunning panorama of the surroundings. A standard entry permit allows you access to this beautiful monastery. The cave temple inside the monastery is one of the attractions here, along with the spectacular views.
Punakha Dzong:
The second-largest Dzong (fortress) in Bhutan is home to almost all the national treasure of the country. Built between 1637 and 1638, it is also the second oldest building in Bhutan. It is also the final resting place for the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tetrön Pema Lingpa. The fort itself is a wonder of architecture as it doesn’t use a single nail in its construction. The sacred relics of the Southern Drukpa Lineage and a sizeable collection of intricate paintings are worth your time.
National Museum of Bhutan:
The National Museum of Bhutan is a treasure trove of the country’s rich history. It chronicles more than 1,500 years of Bhutan’s culture in about 3,000 exhibits. From ancient sculptures to modern paintings, it is all there. The natural history section catalogues all the flora, fauna and wildlife of the region. There’s an entire section dedicated to ceremonial masks used in celebrations around Bhutan. A comprehensive photo gallery captures and showcases the cultural timeline. The museum building is also used as a venue for traditional dance ceremonies.
Zuri Dzong:
Dating back to the 12th century, this is one of the oldest standing dzongs of Bhutan. Zuri Dzong is a historically and culturally significant structure as it is believed to have been built at the site of a cave where Lord Buddha is said to have meditated during the 8th century. Secured inside double palisade walls and accessible only by a bridge, the 5-storey-tall structure offers mesmerising panoramas of the Paro Valley. This is one of the best and most popular hiking destinations in the region.
Jigme Dorji National Park:
The Jigme Dorji National Park is a veritable treasure chest of wildlife conservation. It is home to a multitude of rare animal and bird species such as Snow Leopard, Indian Leopard, Serow, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Pika, Marmot, Goral, Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Ravens and Black Musk Deer. With such a variety of wildlife on offer, the National Park is a thriving ecosystem that is a result of aggressive conservation efforts. In addition to the animals, the park also houses 300 medicinal plants species along with around 39 types of butterfly species.
Food in Bhutan
The cuisine of Bhutan has a distinct flavour profile that is dominated by liberal use of spices as well as chillies. Surprisingly, even though there are plenty of meat dishes available, a sizable population is vegetarian. Due to its proximity to India and China, you can easily find both cuisines throughout the country. Here are some local delicacies that you should try on your vacation to Bhutan.
Jaju Soup - A Traditional Soup:
This soup is traditionally made from sun-dried turnip leaves, although they can occasionally be replaced by spinach or other leafy greens for variety. It uses a milk and butter base to create a rich concoction that holds a special place during festivals and special occasions. You might find variations of this throughout Bhutan. Eat this with rice and curry as the locals do. Also, try the heartier version with cheese added to enhance the flavour and the texture.
Red Rice - A Local Staple:
Red rice is a medium-grain variety of rice that finds its way into the daily diet of most of Bhutan. Grown mostly in the Paro region, it is nurtured by the mineral-rich glacier water. It is only partially milled, so it cooks faster and retains more nutrition from the bran. This gluten-free rice has a distinctly nutty and earthy flavour that complements the spicy dishes quite well. You will find the rice as an accompaniment in a variety of Bhutanese dishes such as Ema Dashti and Shamu Dashti.
Jasha Maru - Spicy Chicken Stew:
A complete contrast to the mellow Jaju, Jasha Maru is a lip-burningly spicy local delicacy. The stew is prepared using diced chicken, ginger, garlic, onion, chillies, tomato and coriander leaves. But it is the ginger that gives Jasha Maru its soul. Usually served with generous helpings of chicken broth, the poultry may be replaced by other meats in some other variations of this flavourful dish. You will find this served mostly with red rice, although some places may serve it with buckwheat noodles. Do try it but be prepared for the after-burn.
Zow Shungo - A Quick Meal:
The Zow Shungo is a proud proponent of the Bhutanese philosophy of avoiding needless waste. It is often a mishmash of leftover vegetables that can be tossed together in a jiffy and is served with red rice. Though this is essentially a way to cut down on food wastage, you will find the Zow Shungo served in restaurants around Bhutan. Be sure to try this for its unique taste and texture that will vary from one place to another. By the way, ‘Zow’ means ‘splendid’ in the local language.
Ema Datshi - A Marriage of Cheese and Chillies
Yak cheese and chillies. Ema Datshi is a decadent combination of these two primary ingredients that come together beautifully to form the national dish of Bhutan. Garlic, onions and tomatoes add to the taste and texture of the stew, but the gravy retains the buttery colour of the cheese. Don’t be fooled by its tame appearance though. Ema means chillies in Bhutanese and they make their presence felt with every bite. As usual, you will find this dish served with omnipresent red rice.
Things to Do in Bhutan
While most tourists travelling to Bhutan expect a quiet holiday, Bhutan has so much more to offer than serenity and clean air. You can easily pair your stretches of tranquillity with intermittent bursts of adventure to keep your holiday more interesting. Here are some recommended things to do in Bhutan.
Relax in the Hot Springs at Gasa Tsachu:
Soaking in natural hot springs, especially amidst the cool weather of Bhutan is a pleasure that needs to be experienced to be believed. Gasa Tsachu is in the same district as Jigme National Park. It is a collection of natural hot-water springs that offer a remarkably relaxing experience in open-air communal tanks. This is a truly rewarding experience, especially after an arduous trek across the national park. Take a cue from the locals and dissolve your tiredness in the proper Bhutanese way.
Go River Rafting on Po Chu River:
After a relaxing soak in the hot springs, a river rafting expedition on the River Po Chu seems like an exciting prospect. But far from the usual rapids accompanied by strong currents and loud screams, river rafting in Bhutan is almost a Zen-like experience. You are carried along on gentle currents along the river’s flow flanked by picturesque scenery on both the riverbanks. The 16-km-long route gives you the perfect opportunity to admire the natural beauty of Bhutan from a different perspective.
Trek in the Snow:
With its varied topography, Bhutan is a trekker’s paradise. As you make your way through exquisite natural landscapes, the snow-capped mountains, the lush green valleys and the crystal-clear lakes make a magnificent background for your trek. Some of the treks are physically demanding, but most are easy to conquer with a basic level of fitness. But, regardless of the difficulty level, they will all test your resolve and check your breaking point. So, put your best foot forward and explore the magnificence of the Bhutanese landscape on foot.
Score a Bulls Eye:
Archery is more that Bhutan’s national sport. It is a passion that thrives in every Bhutanese heart. All around the country you will find throngs of men dressed in ghos (traditional robes) shooting at tiny targets sometimes placed as far as 140 metres away. You can test your aim at one of these archery fields that are present in every Bhutanese village. The archery tournaments between villages are colourful spectacles that can get as rowdy as any international sporting events. The singing, heckling and cheering lend a festive air to the intense competitions. The Coronation Archery tournament and the Yangphel tournament are the biggest tournaments of the year.
Dance with the Monks:
The wonderful Bhutanese culture is full of song and dance that celebrate age-old traditions and beliefs. Among these the ‘Tsechu’ reserves a special place among the local populace. Taking place on the 10th day of every Tibetan lunar month, it is the time for dancing, revelry and catching up with friends. But the highlight of the festival is the ‘Cham’ dance performed by monks dressed in intricate costumes and traditional masks. Each of these dances carries a moral message that is conveyed in an entertaining format. The end of the festival is marked by the unfurling of a giant Thangka or Throngdrei. *Disclaimer- The family discount mentioned for this destination is defined basis 2 adults & 1 child combination.

Himalayan Hidden Gem: 10 Things Travelers Should Know Before Visiting Bhutan
W hen travelers think of visiting the Himalayas, trekking Nepal's underrated routes and practicing yoga in northern India may spring to mind. However, there is another small country in the Himalayas that remains a hidden gem. Bhutan is a landlocked country between India and China that is home to high-altitude peaks, fascinating culture, and Buddhist monasteries where monks live their daily lives .
Here are several important things to know about visiting Bhutan before booking a trip to explore this fascinating gem, which is one of the most off-the-beaten-path destinations in the world that still remains a stunning secret spot.
Travelers From Most Countries Require A Visa
Travelers visiting from any country, except for India , will need a visa to enter Bhutan. Passport holders from the Maldives and Bangladesh can get a visa on arrival.
The same option is available to passport holders from Switzerland and Thailand. All other international visitors should apply for their visa online in advance of their arrival date.
The visa fee for Bhutan is around $40USD, and it’s non-refundable.
Joining A Tour Package For Bhutan Is No Longer Mandatory
Prior to 2022, international visitors traveling to Bhutan were legally required to travel as part of an organized tour group to limit where tourists went and meet a minimum daily spend.
The rules on this have since been relaxed , but due to a lack of tourism infrastructure, traveling to Bhutan alone can be challenging. It’s still a good idea to hire a tour guide or join a guided tour to get the most out of the experience.
Bhutan Is Expensive & There's A Mandatory Daily Fee For Tourists
Unlike nearby countries in East Asia and Southeast Asia, Bhutan is not a budget-friendly destination where backpackers can scrape by on ~$50 a day or less.
While the Bhutanese government relaxed the rules regarding booking tour packages in 2022, they introduced a tariff called the sustainable development fee (SDF) that requires visitors to pay $200 per person, per day , to the government on top of the visa.

There Is A Dress Code In Bhutan
Just like many other countries in Asia with shrines or temples, travelers must be mindful of their attire. Ideally, they should wear clothes that are modest and cover enough of their arms and legs, especially when they enter the Dzongs in Bhutan.
Cover shoulders, arms, and knees. Also, don’t wear shorts or skirts. It's disrespectful to the country's culture and people.
A Dzong is a Bhutanese fortress built in the 17th century.
Spring Is The Best Season To Visit Bhutan
The best time of year to visit Bhutan is from March to May. During the spring, travelers can anticipate clear skies, flowers in bloom, and lots of events and festivals to experience.
The fall (October to December) is also a pleasant time to explore Bhutan (the last Shangri-La) , thanks to the crisp air, clear skies, and views of the mountain peaks of Bhutan.
Try to avoid visiting during the summer months when Bhutan experiences monsoon season.
Paro Is Near The Famous Tiger’s Nest
When planning a trip to this country, the famous Tiger’s Nest monastery is likely to be top of the mind for travelers seeking exciting adventures in Bhutan . This iconic site is a must-visit spot on any Bhutan travel itinerary.
To get to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, plan part of the trip to stay in Paro. From Paro, it’s approximately a 20-minute drive north to reach the monastery.
The National Dish Of Bhutan Is Called Ema Datshi
The national dish of Bhutan is called Ema Datshi and is a must-try while visiting. In the Bhutanese language, Ema translates to “chili,” while Datshi translates to “cheese”.
It makes sense then that this is a spicy stew containing both chili peppers and local yak cheese.

Travelers Can Pay With US Dollars
The local currency in Bhutan is called the Bhutanese Ngultrum. However, travelers should note that when visiting the country, it’s also common and acceptable to pay in cash using US Dollars for many goods and services.
Depending on where tourists are coming from, obtaining USD may be easier than getting the local Bhutanese Ngultrum prior to arrival.
There is limited ATM access in Bhutan, particularly in rural areas. Bring cash on arrival and take whatever is necessary out in main towns around the country to avoid being caught without access to cash.
There Is No Hiking In Bhutan Above 6,000 Meters
Since the Himalayan peaks are protected and sacred in Bhutan, the country banned mountaineering under law decades ago. There is absolutely no climbing or trekking to peaks above 6,000 meters (around 19,685 feet).
As such, anybody intending to visit Bhutan's hiking trails and mountains must plan ahead and select routes that they are allowed to explore. Visitors must not trek any routes that are prohibited.

Consider The Potential For Altitude Sickness
Bhutan is a country at a high altitude, thanks to its position in the Himalayan mountain range. Just like when planning trekking routes in nearby Nepal, travelers planning a visit to Bhutan should consider the possibility that they will experience altitude sickness during their stay.
While Paro airport in Bhutan sits at an elevation of just 2,243 meters above sea level, the potential for altitude sickness usually starts at over 2,500 meters above sea level. A visit to the Tiger’s Nest at 2,950 meters above sea level creates this potential. Therefore, travelers should talk to their doctor about best practices for managing altitude sickness before their trip.
