India saw 1.52 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2021: govt data.
The statistics were released at the National Tourism awards ceremony held on World Tourism day on Tuesday. While releasing the report, tourism minister G Kishan Reddy said prime minister Narendra Modi is working as the 'brand ambassador' of Indian tourism and that India plans to position itself as a major tourism destination during its presidency of G20 for 2023.

Secretary Tourism Shri Arvind Singh and other officials of the Ministry, important dignitaries from the States/ UTs, travel industry and media remain present on the occasion.
India is in unlocking phase and domestic tourism has re-started slowly and steadily. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an immense socio-economic impact worldwide and gradual increase in the domestic tourism will help for recovery and growth in many folds of the society. Tourism has the potential to contribute to inclusive growth by creating opportunities for all different groups, ethnicity, religion and across sectors such as agriculture, arts & crafts etc., services to contribute and benefit from economic growth. Celebrated every September 27 around the world, the purpose of World Tourism Day (WTD) is to foster awareness among the international community on the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
During tomorrow's event, NIDHI 2.0 (National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry) and ‘India Tourism Statistics – At a Glance, 2021’ will be launched.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will also be signed between Ministry of Tourism, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI)to actively promote and support ‘sustainability initiatives’ in the tourism sector of each other .

- The pandemic generated a loss of 2.6 billion international arrivals in 2020, 2021 and 2022 combined
- Export revenues from international tourism dropped 62% in 2020 and 59% in 2021, versus 2019 (real terms) and then rebounded in 2022, remaining 34% below pre-pandemic levels.
- The total loss in export revenues from tourism amounts to USD 2.6 trillion for that three-year period.

- 2021 observed growth of 11.05% in domestic tourist visits in India; FTAs dipped by 44.5%: Report
The report titled ‘India Tourism Statistics 2022’ released by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, on World Tourism Day indicates a fall in the number of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in 2021 in comparison to the 2020 figures. However, the report further shows that there has been a continuous increase in domestic tourist visits especially in the past two years.

National Tourism Awards presented after a two-year gap, Vice President Dhankar honours the awardees
The awards ceremony organised on September 27 marked the occasion of World Tourism Day and was followed by multiple launches by the Union Tourism Ministry. India Tourism Statistics 2022 report, new Incredible India global promotional films and “GoBeyond:75 Experiences of North India” e-book, were released by Vice President India, Jagpeep Dhankar, at the occasion.
