Forming in 1968 and originating in Oakland, California, USA, Tower of Power are a rhythm and blues band best known for their brass section, who have become some of the most successful and most prolific collaborators in R& B history.

Tower of Power might be responsible for some of the most fantastic sounds in soul, R&B and rock music, while never quite getting the recognition they deserve for that. They were formed out of a chance meeting between Emilio Castillo and Stephen “Doc” Kupka, the future tenor and baritone saxophonists of the band, respectively.

The band were originally put together under the name The Motowns. However, after Castillo realized he would never get his band headlining San Francisco’s iconic Fillmore Auditorium with that name, they soon switched it to Tower Of Power. A name literally picked from a list of weird band names because he thought it described them the best.

With the new name in place and a solid line up found, the band were finally on their way. They signed to Billy Graham’s San Francisco Records in 1970 and released their debut record “East Bay Grease” soon afterwards. However it wasn’t until 1972 and a new lead vocalist in the form of Rick Stevens, that the band started getting honest to goodness hits in the form of “So Very Hard To Go” and “What Is Hip?”.

However, what made Tower of Power stand out was their horn section, and they went on to work with the likes of Aerosmith, Heart, Grateful Dead and John Lee Hooker in their own right while the band were still at the top of their game. The band still tour to this day and have still got it in spades. They’re an indispensable part of music’s history, and every true music fan would do well to see them as soon as possible.

Live reviews

Tower of Power is arguably one of the biggest names in soul, funk and R&B. They have one of the most defining horn sections; four to the floor drum beats and syncopated bass lines. Definitely pioneers of a very memorable sound. This audience cannot wait for what they perform tonight, myself included. I cannot wait to have a boogie with my notepad and pencil. The singles that they have produced are second to none with such a fantastic vibe accompanying them; every song fills a dance floor.

The disco troupe open with “So Very Hard to Go” which reached number 17 in 1973. This of course is no surprise with the huge audience reaction, which they receive throughout the whole set. Lenny Williams is such a good front man, keeping everyone happy throughout, making sure everyone is on their feet, singing along throughout the set. I have to quickly just give a mention to their horn section, which to hear live is quite simply a force to be reckoned with. They have featured on so many pop records working with artists such as The Monkees, Grateful Dead, Huey Lewis and the News, Toto and Aerosmith. To be in the presence of them is just incredible.

Band is Fantastic! Venue sound SUX! After 47 years, Tower of Power still brings the funk and the energy to every performance. Not a weak moment in the show, and even with an encore, they left us wanting more. If you want to go to a concert where you get to stand and dance in the aisles, Tower of Power should be at the top of your list! But don't waste your money going to the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Its an acoustic cesspool, where the sound is worse as you get closer the stage! I moved to several open seats to try to find a place where I could hear all the players in the band, and not surprisingly, the only halfway decent sound was right next to the Sound Mixer booth in the back of the theatre, duh! In my seats on the first row, all you could hear was the painfully loud thud of the bass drum and the back-wash of muddy echo coming from the back wall of the theatre. Even after complaining to the Sound Man, their only solution was to turn volume up louder. This theatre sound SUX!

Sorry guys in the band not the same original group was at Pomona Fair plex last night the music was to loud with to much brass and sounded and was a long time for the loud ness to stop how about some love or mellow music all the brass , drums all instruments making noise could hardly wait FOR IT TO BE OVER WITH all noise just to much , was hoping for more of the old music that made the group famous this other noise is to much and no sense like you were playing to fill time and not what the audience wanted old tunes , disappointed wont attend another War or tower of Power again, this noise went on and on what happen ????

Tower of Power the group was fantastic. I was however, very disappointed in the sound mix.

TOP is a 5 hour piece group and a lot of their songs feature the horns. Well the mix was horrible. I could barely hear the horns.

As I got closer to the stage, I could hear the stage mix and that sounded good but the main mix was poor

I also couldn't help but think while watching the lead singer that I was watching Kevin Hart. He was ok but fair when it comes to the TOP long list of lead vocalists

Band is still "on it" and relevant. New frontman (Marcus Scott) ensures the stage energy, though Emilio's energy and dancing on stage are truly insuring. This band is NOT "going through the motions". They love playing and bringing joy to the appreciative audience. Was great to hear they have another CD queued for end-of-the-year release, as their current release can be argued as their best every compilation (my opion) ... Stay healthy T.O.P. & com back more often !!!!

Finally! I grew up in San Francisco during the 60's-70's. Lived in the Noe Valley, and Mission District. Enjoyed free concerts outside of Mission High School, because the majority of the musicians we all came from the neighbor and culture.

Throughout the years; while stationed..if driving less than 200 miles and couple of us would drive to attend.

While there have been new members...the ntet and memories are the same>

Mesmerising! Legendary horn section that gave you goose pimples, August rhythm section & unsung bassist & an amazing new singer (girls- easy on the eye!) that changes TOP's sound slight making it more contemporary. I'm tending to lean towards the older singers

There are a well oiled machine & I jumped at the chance as they have never been to Melbourne. What a blast!!!

The East Bay Boys played s new line up of old Funk and Soul and the the roof off the house. Marcus Scott is coming in to his own and the Horn section was as awesome as ever. Jerry Cortez had s few solo rigs and torn down the house, it was awesome.

Great venue, small and comfortable, great acoustics. Tower of Power was live and in living color.

Their concert was swinging as last time in the Melkweg. Always having fun and entertaining the audience. And their new singer, Ray Greene, is wonderful. Had a great time and did not notice that when they first left the stage for an encore they had been playing for two hours already! See you next time you are around, Emilio and friends!

Have seen TOP 4 times in the past 3 years. Always amazing. They're better than they've ever been. Marcus Scott on vocals is one of their top 1 or 2 singers ever, and they've had a bunch of great ones. Go see them! A treasure of SOUL music. And the best horn section of all time.

Tower of Power Celebrates 55 Years with 2023 Tour

Kevin Johnson

Oakland’s finest soul band, Tower of Power, has announced a winter tour for 2023 to celebrate the band’s 55th anniversary. The band is still led by Emilio Castillo, who founded the group in 1968 with his brother Jack Castillo, Stephen “Doc” Kupka, and bassist Francis “Rocco” Prestia.

“WOW, 55 years!! Tower of Power is heading coast to coast in 2023 to celebrate 55 years of being a band,” bandleader Emilio Castillo exclaimed. “I can remember back in the day dreaming about getting all the way to Sacramento [from Oakland]. To say the least, we’ve far exceeded our wildest dreams. An eternal thank you to our fans for keeping the spirit of Tower of Power alive for all these years. Looking forward to seeing you in 2023 for a proper SOUL VACCINATION!”

Marc Van Wageningen has been ToP’s bassist for the past few years, even before Prestia’s passing in 2020 . He’ll be tearing up songs like “What Is Hip” and “You’re Still A Young Man” as the tour heads from California all the way to New Hampshire and points in between. They’ll even have a short residency at the Blue Note in Honolulu, Hawaii in May.

FINAL CURTAIN CALL This show is no longer running.

Regrettably, we can now confirm that the previously postponed  Tower of Power  (Wednesday 16 November 2022) show at  The London Palladium has been cancelled.

The band says, “Despite their best efforts, our live team has been unable to find a new date for us to play in London and so regrettably our postponed show at The London Palladium now has to be cancelled outright. We are very grateful for the many years of support from our fans and we will be back as soon as we can to make it up to you. Everyone will be refunded from their point of purchase.”

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Best wishes, LW Theatres

For over 50 years, Tower of Power have been creating their own kind of soul and funk music. Since 1968, Tower of Power has delivered their unique brand of music to their fans, appearing before sold out crowds as they tour the world each year. Tower’s sound can be hard to categorize, but the band’s leader and founding member, Emilio Castillo , has labeled their sound as “Urban Soul Music.”

Tower’s rhythm section lays down a groove like no other band. The band’s horn driven sound is unique, and the way they approach everything, from writing and arranging to mixing and performing, is totally their own. Combine all of that with an outstanding lead vocalist and you have one of the most dynamic groups of musicians to ever hit the stage.

Tower of Power to Celebrate 55 Years with Forthcoming Christmas EP and New Early 2024 Tour Dates

Tower of Power, the ensemble known for their iconic horn-led funk and soul lean, has announced their new holiday EP, It’s Christmas , a collection of traditional songs associated with the annual winter celebration. In addition to impending music, the band also shared a series of select tour dates slated for 2024. News from Tower of Power arrives on the heels of their 55 anniversary.

It’s Christmas was produced by Joe Vannelli and bandleader Emilio Castillo at Blue Moon Studios in Agoura Hills, Calif., just outside Los Angeles. The seven-track collection presents the group’s take on Christmas classics from “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” to “Silver Bells” and “O Holy Night.” In addition, the EP boasts an original, “It’s Christmas (A Long Way from Home),” written by Emilio, Doc Kupka, and Joe Vannelli.

Paired with the news of forthcoming music, Tower of Power also shared a series of tour dates. The first patch of dates picks up this month and flows into December when the band marks the season with a series of holiday and hits gigs. Then, at the end of January, they’ll start another round of tour dates extending into February and March.

“55 years have flashed before us in the blink of an eye, and this year has been extraordinary,” shared Castillo. “2023 has been a monumental year for Tower of Power – from a sold-out European tour to performances with world-renowned symphonies and shows that have attracted fans from every era of Tower of Power’s history. And we’re glad to be celebrating the holiday season with the release of our new EP. We can’t wait to get back out in 2024 to keep the spirit of funk and soul alive!”

Celebrating 55 years , Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. “We were a Soul band called The Motowns.” recalls Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was in there, and my brother was the drummer. I met “Doc” Kupka back in 1968, and gave him an audition. He came in the band, and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.” The reason for the band name change was that they had a specific goal in mind.

“We wanted to get into the Fillmore Auditorium and with a name like the Motowns, dressed in suits with razor cuts, we knew we’d never get in there. We grew our hair long, and started to be hippies, and changed our name. Doc then suggested that we start writing our own songs.”

The Fillmore was a major goal, which came along at the right time. “We had been playing nightclubs, and we had gotten busted for being underage. One night, the ABC came in, and caught the trumpet player drinking, and the next thing we knew, a notice was out across the Bay Area that if they hired us again, clubs would lose their liquor license. Then, my parents moved to Detroit, and I was on my own, broke and hungry, and all I did was rehearse. We wrote the songs for East Bay Grease , and by November, we were at the end of our rope. I told the guys that I was leaving for the holidays, and if nothing happened with this audition, I wasn’t coming back.”

Fortunately, he did, and the rest as they say, is history.
