On the road in the americas since 2006,  two travel journalists and a truck traveling full time in the americas to uncover fresh information about where to go, what to eat, where to sleep, and what to do in north, central, and south america so you can travel better., who we are & what we’re doing.

We are writer Karen Catchpole and photographer Eric Mohl and we believe travel journalists should travel. In 2006 we left our jobs and apartment in New York City and embarked on our Trans-Americas Journey working road trip through the Americas. We’ve been on the road through North, Central and South America full time ever since. We freelance from the road and we produce the Trans-Americas Journey travel blog .

What We're Doing

In 2006 we got in a truck and started exploring our own vast backyard—the Americas. We wanted to better understand how we fit in with our continental neighbors, all of whom are also American by the way (which explains the “s” after America in our name). Our goal is to make the Trans-Americas Journey the ultimate independent road trip through the Americas and to inspire you to travel in North, Central, and South America too.

An Introduction

Welcome to Eric's Trains! My name is Eric Siegel and this is my 3-Rail O-Gauge/O-Scale train website. My train adventure started around 1990, when I was about 14 years old and inherited my father's old postwar Lionel set. The set had been in storage for many years in a dark and damp basement, so much of it was is pretty bad shape. However, with a little work, I was able to get the majority of the set back into operating condition. Additionally, I was able to add a large amount of new equipment to the set, resulting in decently sized 16'x8' layout.

By the late 80's and early 90's, Lionel had been reduced to making stuff that really wasn't all that great and the selection of highly detailed scale trains was fairly limited. Although several innovations had been made during Lionel's MPC years, quality and detail was still a little lacking, as was selection. All the new pieces that I bought during this time were a bit flimsy and the plastic pieces broke very easily in the event of a train wreck or even under normal wear and tear. The low level of craftsmanship in the new trains was something of a disappointment, but what could I do? The internet as we know it today was not around yet, so finding Postwar trains was both time consuming and expensive. I was forced to make do with what was readily available. This low point for Lionel was truly a time when a father could say to his son, "They don't make 'em like they used to". But that would soon change.

In 1994 I went off to college. My mother sold her house and I had to put the train back into storage in my father's basement. I took a great deal of care in packing it away, as I knew I would one day take it out again. Jump ahead to 2005. I graduated from UGA in 2000 and was living in a big loft apartment in downtown Atlanta and the arrival of my son prompted me to pull the set out and start the adventure all over again! I've since discovered that the new century has ushered in a new "golden age" for O-Gauge trains. In the early `90's, Lionel once again started to make quality products again. Additionally, serious competition entered the O-Gauge train scene and Lionel began to lose it's near monopoly of the O-Gauge train market as manufacturers like Atlas , MTH , Weaver and others brought a level of quality and realism to O-Gauge never seen before. Competition between the train makers has led to great leaps in technology and realism. Hooray for capitalism! Some of the new Lionel die-cast cars that I've recently acquired are even more beautiful than the original postwar versions! MTH and Atlas are making incredible trains and accessories that give Lionel a serious run for their money and even surpass Lionel in many areas. In addition to the return to quality construction, modern technology has taken over and completely revolutionized model railroading. Computerized train systems, such as MTH's DCS system or Lionel's Legacy system, allow train enthusiasts to control the ENTIRE train set via a single hand-held remote control! With multiple companies now making high quality O-Gauge trains again and technology taking model railroading to new heights, it's a great time to get back into the hobby! Things have certainly changed from when I was a kid and with my son now getting into the hobby for himself I can say to him, "Son, they sure don't make 'em like they used to, and thank heavens for that!"

The first new layout that I created in our old loft apartment was a modest 12x8 size. Soon after I started building the layout I decided to abandon the postwar style of train layout and go for a highly detailed scale layout. This meant shelving most of my smaller O-27 trains and purchasing new 1:48 scale pieces. I never completely finished the 12X8 layout because in late 2006 we bought our first house. Our house has a basement that's around 900 square feet (roughly 25x36) and it's 100% for the trains! You can keep up with the latest layout progress by following Eric's Triains on Facebook . My expected completion time for the new layout is now sometime in 2020, though that may change. Layouts are never really done, are they?

My current layout, which I've named The Appalachian & Western Railroad , is an O-Scale layout which uses MTH' s Digital Command System (DCS) as well Lionel's Legacy command sytem. The trains all run on Atlas O 3-rail track and I use a combination of Atlas and Ross switches. The layout is, and will continue to be, a modern themed scale pike. I did not grow up in the steam era, nor did I grow up in the streamlined diesel era. I grew up in the 80's and 90's when it was all modern diesel power. Just like anyone who grew up with steam or early diesels, I too have fond memories of the trains of my era. I can remember sitting in my parents' car at a crossing and watching with fascination as those big ugly diesels thundered by with a long stretch of battered and weathered freight cars. While I have a few diesels here and there that are from the 50's and 60's, the majority are 70's and later model diesels and rolling stock. Occasionally I will also run some older steam power and rolling stock just for fun, but the layout itself is modern themed. The roads that I try to concentrate on are the ones that are still around today and that I see around where I live: Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern and BNSF. I'm also getting into some of the older roads that have been merged into the previously mentioned roads, like Southern Pacific, Conrail, Santa Fe and the like, since it's still possible to see engines and rolling stock with the livery of those older roads on the rails today. Basically, anything that might be seen on the rails today is fair game. For more information on the current layout, check out this page .

In addition to my large O-Scale layout, I also dabble in a couple other types of trains. I have a growing collection of O-Gauge and Standard Gauge tinplate trains like those made by Lionel, Ives and American Flyer in the early 20th century. I also have a small amount of On30(narrow gauge O-Scale) equipment and there is a small narrow gauge line in the mountains of the Colorado Room on my layout.

If you'd like to keep up with my model railroading adventures, check out my YouTube Channel , Facebook Page , or follow me on Twitter .

Enjoy, Eric Siegel

The summer heat is still blistering, but it’s time for some big holiday news. Trans-Siberian Orchestra has confirmed dates for their annual Christmas tour, with this year’s performances dubbed, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve – the Best of TSO & More. With two separate touring lineups, the 62-date tour will see TSO perform 104 shows in total, beginning on November 15 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The trek runs through Christmas, wrapping up just before the New Year on December 30.

Check out the full tour itinerary, plus a special preview video, below now.

Additionally, on November 8, the band is launching its SiriusXM festive channel, Trans-Siberian Orchestra Radio, as well as a digital release of  The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve – The Complete Narrated Version on November 10.

This year’s TSO tour promises a new and larger presentation of the beloved holiday tradition, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” which has captured the hearts of multiple generations. A product of the imagination of TSO’s late founder Paul O’Neill, and based on TSO’s multi-platinum CD and TV special, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve” follows the journey of a runaway who breaks into an abandoned vaudeville theater on December 24. After the performance of the rock opera, 2023’s tour also boasts a rocking, blazing, and laser-lit second set containing more of TSO’s greatest hits, fan-favorites, and surprises. For more details on tour dates and ticket sales, visit  www.trans-siberian.com .

SiriusXM’s highly anticipated holiday music lineup featuring 26 festive channels has been announced today, including Trans-Siberian Orchestra Radio. Available on the SiriusXM app November 8 through December 26, Trans-Siberian Orchestra Radio takes listeners to the realm where rock music pushes classical’s boundaries, where holiday classics fuse with powerful electric guitars, and where a diverse lineup of vocalists come together to create storytelling like no other. The channel features the band’s iconic Christmas discography, exclusive concert recordings, original shows hosted by band members, and much more. Eligible customers can get their first three months of SiriusXM streaming for free. Click  here  to sign up.

On November 10, TSO, which has sold more than 12 million albums and DVDs, will digitally release of  The Ghosts of Christmas Eve  in Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio and hi-fidelity stereo mixes, including both the songs and narration, titled  The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve – The Complete Narrated Version  (click  HERE ). A select group, drawn from the  TSO fan club , will be the first to previous the album at special listening sessions in Los Angeles and London, England. The group previously released music in several formats this fall, including a 25th anniversary edition of  The Christmas Attic  as a deluxe pop-up galaxy blue vinyl 2-LP edition (buy  HERE ) and a standard black vinyl 2-LP edition (buy  HERE ); plus, a clear vinyl pressing of  Christmas Eve and Other Stories  on November 3 (buy  HERE ).

Since its touring debut, TSO has played more than 2,000 Winter Tour shows to more than 18 million fans. In just the past 10 years (encompassing nine tours), TSO has performed for more than 8 million fans. Keeping with O’Neill’s vision, TSO remains one of rock’s most charitable bands. Once again, TSO will give at least $1 from every ticket sold to charity. To date, more than $18 million has been donated by the group.

Eric Cole partners up with his caddie's father and retired PGA Tour player Russell Cochran for 2024 Zurich Classic

E ric Cole is in Avondale, Louisiana, to participate in the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. This will be Cole's second experience at TPC Louisiana and he will have a very unique teammate.

Eric Cole's teammate will be former PGA Tour player Russell Cochran, now 65 years old. Cochran has previous experience at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, having played the event in 2009 when it was still played in an individual format. Cochran missed the cut on that occasion.

Russell Cochran is also the father of Eric Cole 's caddie, Reed Cochran. So this is the fourth team whose members are somehow related beyond being colleagues. Cole and Cochran join the three brother pairs present, Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard, and Pierceson and Parker Coody.

Both Russell Cochran and Eric Cole told the PGA Tour Champions news service how this unique team came together.

Here's how Cochran told it:

"It's kind of funny. Eric [Cole] and I are good friends, obviously. Probably said no to him 30 times, you know, didn't feel right coming and playing. Had my buddy Mark Calcavecchia, he told me I'd be crazy not to play, and then, half the membership of the club we're at said 'Look, you got the nicest guy in the world, go play with him."
"So, they talked me into it and here I am. And just looking forward forward for a good week and having a lot of fun."

Eric Cole, for his part, said the following:

Russ [Russell Cochran] and I play a lot of golf togetherdown in south Florida, and his son Reed caddies for me, and we just kind of bounced the idea around a little bit. I think it took a little bit of a push for me to get Russ to play, but, he's played 599 events on Tour, so, this will be his 600th. So, kind of a cool week for us.

Who is Eric Cole's teammate, Russell Cochran

Russell Cochran has had a long career in professional golf, beginning in 1979 and extending to the present day. Cochran played on the now-called Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Canada, but most of his career was on the PGA Tour .

At the highest level, he has played 599 tournaments, with a victory in the 1991 Western Open as his best result. He finished second eight times and reached the top 10 on 50 other occasions.

He made 357 cuts. Cochran began playing on the PGA Tour Champions in 2009 and last played on the PGA Tour in 2013. He has been playing on the Senior circuit until the current season (2024) with five victories as the best results, including a major (The Senior Open Championship 2011).

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour. Just ask  this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .

The 27-year-old won the 2024 RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Monday after play was suspended for two-and-a-half hours on Sunday due to inclement weather and then later for darkness. The win is the world No. 1’s fourth in his last five starts and 10th of his PGA Tour career.

Last week Scheffler won $3.6 million at the Masters and he earned another $3.6 million for his win this week in the PGA Tour’s latest big-money signature event. Sahith Theegala, who finished three shots back in second, banked a hefty $2.18 million for his runner-up showing. Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark, who finished T-3 at 15 under, each banked $1.18 million.

Eric Cole makes first career ace at Zurich Classic

Change Text Size

It was already a feel-good week for the team of Eric Cole and Russ Cochran. It got even better on Thursday afternoon.

Cole made an ace on the 207-yard par-3 14th during the first round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. It’s Cole’s first career ace on the PGA TOUR. Cole’s approach landed just short of the green before popping up, slowly meandering to the front-left hole location and falling into the cup. The hole-in-one moved team Cole/Cochran to 3-under through five holes.

The 35-year-old Cole hoped to spend the week celebrating 65-year-old Cochran, whom Cole invited to play so Cochran could hit his 600th career start. Cochran had been stuck on 599 career PGA TOUR starts for over a decade. His last PGA TOUR event was the 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii (T41).

Cole’s caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son, and Cole plays with both father and son back in Tequesta, Florida, a suburb of Jupiter. Cole floated the idea to Russ, who was apprehensive at first. Eventually, Cole wore him down.

“I thought it would be pretty cool to get him his 600th,” said Cole. “Russ was kinda shaky about it, and then I stayed on him pretty hard and he eventually he came around. He’s been getting ready for it.”

Reed stayed on Cole’s bag while Russ’s other son, Ryan, is caddying for his dad.

“It’s a cool family week, and in New Orleans it will be a cool celebration of Russ,” Cole said.

Now, it’s a celebration of them both, with a special memory to share.

“Honoring Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player of all time”: The Experience Hendrix Tour is returning for the first time in 5 years, with a mega lineup including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Samantha Fish and Zakk Wylde

The all-star lineup will tour the US later this year, marking the 20th anniversary of the multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s trailblazing guitar-playing

Experience Hendrix Tour 2024

The Experience Hendrix Tour will return for 24 US dates this fall, celebrating Jimi Hendrix’s fretboard-burning work with a huge ensemble of all-star electric guitar stars.

The tour marks the 20th anniversary of what its curators are calling a “multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s musical genius”, and comes five years after its last tour.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, and Christone 'Kingfish' Ingram will head up a “powerhouse three-hour concert experience”, which also helps shine a light on up-and-coming blues rock talent.

“I’m excited to rejoin the Experience Hendrix tour this year,” says Shepherd. “It’s always been a great tour with exceptional artists honoring Jimi Hendrix, the greatest guitar player of all time, and his amazing and expansive catalog of songs.

“Being able to do a tour with friends always makes for a great time and this show is not to be missed.”

Other notable artists tapped for the multi-generational line-up include Taj Mahal, Samantha Fish, and Dweezil Zappa, as well as Indigenous guitarist, Mato Nanji.

Flag bearers for a new generation of blues players include Ally Venable – who headlined the 60-date European Blues Caravan tour at just 20 years old – and Blues Foundation’s 2023 International Blues Challenge winner, Mathias Lattin.

There’s even room for two-hand tapping jazz virtuoso Stanley Jordan, who is sure to offer a fresh take on some of Hendrix’s cuts.

Experience Hendrix Tour 2024

The full list of artists confirmed reads: Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Kingfish, Eric Johnson, Zakk Wylde, Samantha Fish, Dweezil Zappa, Taj Mahal, Noah Hunt, Chuck Campbell and Calvin Cooke (The Slide Brothers), Stanley Jordan, Ally Venable, Mato Nanji (Indigenous), Dylan Triplett, Ayron Jones, Artur Menezes, Mathias Lattin and Hendri Brown.

Some dates will also feature additional special guests, including legendary Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, with more set to be announced in the future.

The tour’s concept dates back to 2001, when a single concert was held in San Diego. The show was repeated a year later, before hitting the road as a fully fledged tour in 2004.

The 2024 edition stops in the Pacific Northwest, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, before travelling through Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. Aptly, the showcase kicks off in Hendrix’s hometown, at Seattle’s Paramount Theater.

The tour works with a rotating line-up, meaning the guitarists performing each night will vary. For detailed information, head to the Experience Hendrix Tour website .

Disgruntled ex-athletic director used AI to generate fake racist rant in principal's voice: police

WLS logo

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Maryland -- Baltimore County police said a disgruntled ex-athletics director used AI to frame his high school's principal by generating a fake recording of racist rant in his voice.

Police Chief Robert McCullough said his department worked with the FBI and forensic experts from the University of California at Berkeley to investigate the recording that was originally circulated on social media in January 2024.

The audio recording purported to capture Pikesville High School principal Eric Eiswert "spewing racial and antisemitic insults about staff and students," WMAR-TV reported .

McCullough announced Thursday that their investigation found that "Dazhon Darien, the school's athletic director, produced the recording to retaliate against Principal Eiswert, who had initiated a probe into the mishandling of school funds."

Darien was arrested at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport Thursday morning, McCullough said, on an outstanding warrant. He now faces charges that include stalking, disruption of school operations and retaliation against a witness. He is currently in custody and being held on $5,000 bond.

WMAL reported that Eiswert and Darien started having problems after Darien became athletics director in July 2023 and terminated a long-standing coach without Eiswert's approval. WMAL reported Darien was also the subject of a potential threat investigation initiated by Eiswert after he authorized a $1,916 payment to his roommate and Pikesville High School junior varsity basketball coach while claiming that she was acting as an assistant soccer coach for the girls soccer team even though that coach had never assisted during the soccer season. In court documents, it's alleged he submitted the payment by bypassing proper procedures.

Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024

Nearly a quarter-century on from the original Transatlantic Sessions TV series, the live version is securely ensconced as an annual highlight not only of each year’s Celtic Connections , but - thanks to its now-annual post-festival tour - of many fans’ musical calendar throughout the UK. As No Depression put it in their 2018 review (citing co-musical director Aly Bain ), “the ‘special relationship’ across the Pond has come under scrutiny recently, but in the context of this music it remains as strong as ever.”

Gretchen Peters

The incomparable Transatlantic ‘house band’, led by Shetland fiddle maestro  Aly Bain  and dobro virtuoso  Jerry Douglas , featuring  Russ Barenberg ,  Phil Cunningham ,  John Doyle  ,  Michael McGoldrick ,  John McCusker ,  Donald Shaw ,  Danny Thompson  and  James Mackintosh  will be joined by a generation-spanning array of guests for 2019. Among them, Nashville-based New Yorker  Gretchen Peters  recently followed up her double AMA Award-winning Blackbirds with more rave reviews for Dancing With the Beast, whose characteristically vivid, eloquent story-songs address post-Trump and #MeToo themes. It’s always a treat to welcome back the great  Tim O’Brien , whose own new release, Where the River Meets the Road, covers songwriters from his native West Virginia including Doc Williams, Larry Groce, Bill Withers and the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers.

Molly Tuttle

Aged just 25, and already crowned in 2017 as the first-ever female IBMA Awards Guitar Player of the Year, Californian wunderkind Molly Tuttle picked up 2018’s AMA Instrumentalist of the Year, plus Song of the Year at the International Folk Music Awards – all before releasing her debut album.

Celtic voices among the line-up include the incomparable Cara Dillon , whose transcendent interpretation of traditional exile and emigration songs, on her latest album Wanderer, were summed up by the Observer as “gorgeous homesick blues”. Scotland’s own Paul McKenna has long been ranked among our finest younger singers and songwriters, whose voice and passionate conviction are often likened to Dick Gaughan.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
