13 Experiences Every Traveler Should Have in England

travel and leisure england

Shop Portobello Road

London’s cultural sights tend to go heavy on the grandeur—royal this, crown jewels that—but a stroll down its most famous outdoor market promises a relaxing, if treasure-filled afternoon. Portobello Road Market , a half-mile stretch in London’s Notting Hill district, bustles with covered stalls selling vintage clothing, jewelry, fresh produce, flowers, and literally thousands of antiques. It’s possibly the only attraction in the city that’s worth putting up with all the tourists who come—plus, with its concentration of pubs, quirky shops, and rich Victorian history (goods have been bought and sold in this very spot since the 1850s), there’s more to do here than just shop.

Take a Bath in Bath

UNESCO World Heritage Site Bath, famous for its Roman roots and 17th-century abbey (where England’s first king was crowned) has been on folks’ radars lately, thanks to newly opened The Gainsborough —the only UK hotel directly fed by thermal spring water. Inside the hotel’s spa, you’ll find a traditional Roman bath circuit, with thermal pools of varying temperatures, saunas, and an ice alcove. Be sure to venture out, though: the town blossoms during Fashion Week (April 18-24), with special exhibits at the Fashion Museum , plus runway shows and other parties. A must, too, are scenic walks along Pultney Bridge, shopping Milsom Street, and hot buns at Sally Lunns .

Celebrate Solstice at Stonehenge

Don’t limit yourself to just the visitor’s center at England’s famous Neolithic stone circle—experience Stonehenge the way it was meant to be experienced, around a campfire, in a vibrant, dance-filled celebration on the longest day of the year. Sunrise starts at 4:50 a.m. on June 21, and that’s when the core festivities kick off, part of a four-day festival that draws thousands to one of the world’s top wonders. Stonehenge Campsite sits closest to the actual stones, offering 4 acres for tent pitching, plus live music, a bathroom block, and some food vendors (there’s even Wifi)—what better place to celebrate a holiday as old as, if not older than Stonehenge itself?

Meander Through the Cotswolds

Driving through the Cotswolds, a 90-mile rural strip smack in the center of England, is like entering J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth—there are pale rolling hills, dense little villages with limestone cottages, a few castles, and more lush countryside than you’ll know what to do with. Try walking the full length of the Cotswold Way National Trail , or take it in bite-size pieces, with the help of WalkingEnglishman ’s mini guides (and remember: it’s not a proper English country walk without a few pub stops!). For an extra splurge, book a night at Ellenborough Park (from £152), an elegantly restored 16th-century manor house with a spa and a formal restaurant serving Sudeley Castle partridge and braised pork cheek pie.

Sleep in a Yurt in Cornwall

The rugged coastline of North Devon and Cornwall, where waterfalls cascade straight from the cliff tops into the open sea, is undeniably one of England’s most impressive landscapes. For a truly unique experience, book a weekend at Koa Tree Camp , which sits on a 30-acre farm with sheep, pigs, and a pair of goats named Pete and Archie. At night, you’ll sleep in a traditional Mongolian yurt (from £330 for a three-night stay; Norwegian-style log cabins and three bell tents are also available) with a wood-burning stove. Co-founder Andy Thorne runs the surf program (one-on-one, or group lessons are available) at nearby Sandymouth beach , framed by rock pools, billowing grasslands, and million-year-old cliffs.

Stimulate Your Mind in Oxford

Oxford University is made up of 38 different colleges, each with its own history, campus, and visiting hours. Which makes trying to see all of them rather difficult. Instead, pick a few of the best, like the absurdly beautiful New College (founded in 1379, it may be the university’s most photogenic) or the regal Exeter College , where J.R.R. Tolkien conceived his fantasy masterpieces. Then, take a guided tour through one of Europe’s oldest libraries , followed by pie in the city’s covered market , and then a quick trip north to lavish Blenheim Palace , where Winston Churchill was born.

Cheer on Manchester United

Former players like George Best, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham all helped rocket Manchester United to legendary status. And for sports fans, nothing beats seeing the team play live, right on their home turf. Old Trafford, affectionately dubbed the “theatre of dreams,” is the largest club stadium in England, not to mention one of its best-kept. Sign up for an 80-minute stadium tour , or plan well ahead and nab tickets for the upcoming 2016/17 season (cheap seats can be had for as little as £28 ).

Climb 199 Steps to Whitby Abbey

Just over an hour north of York (a worthwhile city, too, if you have the time), the ruins of a 13th-century Benedictine abbey sit dramatically on a bluff overlooking the North Sea. Though it lacks a roof, and much of the interior has eroded over the years, the structure is visually striking in its skeletal shape. Just ask Bram Stoker, who based part of his famous novel, Dracula , on the site after visiting in 1890. Tourists today can climb the 199 scenic steps up from the seaside town of Whitby below, and set up a picnic on the cliff.

Feel the Supernatural Pull of Dartmoor

Mystical Dartmoor, in England’s southwest tip, has inspired extravagant folklore involving ghosts, devils, holy wells, and pixies—but to experience its magic, all you have to do is get lost in nature. Specifically, Lydford Gorge , an ancient, mist-shrouded woodland covered with slippery moss and lichen, where a 98-foot waterfall comes crashing down over the elm and chestnut trees. In the midst of such tranquility, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Take Tea at The Bridge

For England’s most unique afternoon tea, head to Bradford On Avon. The Bridge , which has won awards of excellence from the UK Tea Guild, occupies a blacksmith’s cottage, taking you right back to 16th-century England: creaking wooden staircase, bulging ceiling beams, white tablecloths, and antique porcelain figures lining the shelves. Waitresses in bonnets and Victorian-style ruffled aprons dart between the tables. But even if the history doesn’t do it for you—it’s hard to go wrong with delicious home-made cakes, sandwiches, and scones, all served on traditional cake stands, with Somerset strawberry jam and organic clotted cream made from Jersey cows.

Marvel at Sissinghurst Castle Garden

The 460-acre estate dates back to the Middle Ages—both King Edward I and Queen Elizabeth I stayed here—and was used as a prison tower for French sailors in the 1700s. But the real draw are its gardens, which opened to the public in the 1930s, under the ownership of poet Vita Sackville-West, a contemporary of Virginia Woolf. Often cited as England’s most prized garden estate (BBC4 even aired an eight-part docu-series about it in 2009), now is the perfect time to start planning a spring visit, when its rich flower beds, colorful hedges, and majestic courtyards burst to life with Dahlias, crocuses, and narcissi. Planning an overnighter? The adjacent Sissinghurst Castle Farmhouse (from £285) offers luxe Victorian-style rooms, with views of the estate, as well as farm-to-table breakfasts.

Durham Cathedral

A perfect relic from medieval England, this staggering, richly designed cathedral was built during the time of William the Conquerer, in the 11th century AD, and houses the body of Saint Cuthbert as well as three copies of the Magna Carta. Though most modern-day travelers recognize it from the Harry Potter movies (it played Hogwarts), its riverside setting, its 217-foot tall tower (which can be climbed), and its daily choir services make it a must-see stop.

Visit Peter Rabbit in the Lake District

Cornwall has its cliffs, and the Cotswolds their Hobbit charm, but nothing really touches the majesty and deep, unspoiled beauty of the Lake District . Officially England’s largest national park, covering 885 square miles, it sits just shy of the Scottish border, with 19 lakes as well as England’s highest peak (the vast Scafell Pike , where you can see England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and the Isle of Man from one spot). Scores of travel guides have been written about the region’s epic mountain passes and pristine woodlands—suffice to say, outdoors-y types won’t be disappointed here. The Lake District has cultural appeal, too: it’s home to Peter Rabbit , a progressive theatre company , a sculpture forest , and two Michelin-starred restaurants, L’Enclume (prized for their 18-course tasting menu, £130) and The Samling .

12 Beautiful English Countryside Getaways to Enjoy in 2024

Sometime’s I become so preoccupied with exploring the world that I forget about all the beautiful English Countryside getaway locations right on my doorstep.

The English countryside is often, sadly, overlooked. Visitors from abroad flock to London , stay a few days before moving onto the rest of Europe. But they are missing the best bit!

Whilst England is famed for its pretty countryside with rolling hills, forests and rivers, the charming villages themselves are well worth a visit. There is so much history in England and old buildings, castles and churches galore to reflect this.

The English are notoriously a friendly bunch with a cracking dry sense of humour (if a little eccentric at times…)

Ok, full disclosure; I am English though living in Wales so I may be a tad biased when I tell you the English are the most friendly people worldwide. I’m sure there are some facts out there somewhere to back me up..?!

My favourite thing about an English countryside getaway is the multitude of cafes for afternoon tea, the beautiful walks and spending evenings in a cosy old pub, warming myself by a roaring fire and tucking into some hearty pub food.

So if I’ve convinced you to explore beyond London next time, here are 12 beautiful English Countryside getaways suggested by travel bloggers to inspire your trip to rural England!

But first one of my own favourite places…

English Countryside Getaway to Monmouth

Well, you could argue that this is a Welsh countryside getaway as in truth, Monmouth borders both England and Wales. It’s the town where I grew up and recently I heard it was Britains happiest town according to Capitol radio!

It’s no wonder why really. Monmouth is one of those places where community spirit is really strong. There’s always so much going on whether that be a free music festival or a country fair. The pubs are always bustling and lively and there are plenty of cafes for a cream tea or two.

Monmouth is also home to the only remaining fortified medieval bridge in the UK making it a popular place for history buffs to visit. Read more about Monmouth in my  Monmouth Visitors Guide .

English Countryside Getaway to The Lake District

By Kathi Kamleitner

English Countryside Getaway to Exmoor

By Suzanne Easton

Exmoor is located on the border of Somerset and Devon and is one of the smaller National Parks in England.

It is a beautiful area to explore with deep wooded valleys, streams and high moorland.  It was used as the inspiration for the Lorna Doone book by RD Blackmoore and still has a romantic wilderness feel.

Exmoor reaches the coast with the seaside town of Minehead being on the boundary of the national park, perfect for a beach walk or supplies before heading away from the town.

One of our favourite places is Tarr Steps.  An ancient clapper bridge with beautiful walks and wild swimming in the river during the summer months.  Nearby is Liscombe Farm with gorgeous dairy ice cream from the cows that you see grazing near the river.

Exmoor is also known for its deer rut.  High on the moorland in the autumn months, the stags collect their hinds and congregate showing great displays of their strength, fighting other stags and generally being aggressive and loud.

Staying on Exmoor is really special as it has Dark Skies status and the stars really do shine on the moors at night.  We love the Dunkery Beacon Hotel , indulgence but worth every penny.

English Countryside Getaways in The New Forest

English countryside getaway to hambledon in hampshire.

By Kelly Mongan

With its stunning vineyard and charming village pub, there’s no better place for a weekend away than Hambledon.

Located in Hampshire, this town is often referred to as “the cradle of cricket”, since it is where the modern cricket rules were first played (head to the Bat & Ball pub if you’re a cricket fan!).

Hambledon is located in South Downs National Park and therefore offers stunning countryside walks, through the vineyard and cabbage fields, or even up Butser Hill.

It’s also a Dark Sky zone, meaning you’ll be treated to the most wonderful view of the stars at night.

If you want to truly experience the English countryside, there is no better place to stay than Wriggly Tin Shepherds Huts . Wriggly Tin offers glamping in its finest form and is just a ten-minute walk from Hambledon Vineyard.

At the vineyard, it’s possible to do a tour and taste their award-winning sparkling wine.

If you’re looking to explore more of the area, Winchester is an easy day trip, as is Arundel Castle. Or, for walking/cycling trips, you have the whole of South Downs National Park at your disposal!

English Countryside Getaway to Wensleydale in The Yorkshire Dales

By Sarah Poitras

This summer, we spent four days in the Yorkshire Dales for our first English countryside getaway. We based ourselves in Wensleydale for our Yorkshire Dales holiday .

If you like walking, Wensleydale is a great place to visit in the English countryside. You’ll be treated to rolling green hills, picturesque stone fences, and of course tons of sheep. And it’s a great place for people of all abilities as there are many different walks of varying difficulty levels.

There are also castles! We particularly enjoyed our visit to Bolton Castle, which is quite well preserved and has beautiful grounds to explore. It would also make for a good family outing (we saw a lot of kids enjoying themselves).

We based ourselves in two towns, Hawes and Masham, for their locations and for their local culinary delights. Hawes is home to Wensleydale Creamery which makes truly delicious cheese. And Masham has not one but two local breweries: Theakston Brewery and Black Sheep Brewery.

In Hawes, we stayed at Spring Bank House , a traditional B&B, and in Masham, we stayed at The Bay Horse , a traditional pub. Both served tasty and hearty breakfasts and had friendly and helpful owners. We would highly recommend both if you’re looking for places to stay in Wensleydale.

English Countryside Getaway to Lacock, Wiltshire

By Chandrima Chakraborty

If you’re looking for some beautiful English countryside getaways, the village of Lacock definitely needs to be on your list.

Located in the English county of Wiltshire (around 30 minutes from the city of Bath by car), this little village will transport you back in time, to almost 200 years ago. It’s maintained entirely by the National Trust. And mind you, it’s not a museum. It’s very much a functioning village.

Take a stroll down its many alleys and admire the cute traditional cottages in the village. There’s also an old tithe barn, church, and workhouse.

Here you can see the honour system still in use. Residents lay out their homemade jams, marmalades, buns, and scones outside their homes – unguarded and unsupervised. You’re expected to take what you want and leave the payment right there.

If you feel hungry, stop for a bite at one of its cute little bakeries or cafes. Also, don’t forget to check out the Fox Talbot Museum and the Lacock Abbey (especially if you’re a Harry Potter fan).

The village has also been a filming location for many popular movies and TV shows including Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, and BBC’s Pride and Prejudice.

Lacock can easily be covered on a day trip from London . You might even want to combine it with a visit to Bath and Stonehenge like we did.

English Countryside Getaways in Northumberland, North England

English countryside getaways to the south downs.

Picture proper English countryside and there’s a good chance you think of bright yellow flowering fields, rolling green hills and winding tracks. That’s the South Downs.

This enormous Sussex and Hampshire national park is a prime picnicking spot, with great cycling and walking – and all just 20 minutes from the bustle of Brighton and Hove.

Come for the next eclipse or to stargaze (it’s a Dark Sky Park) or pop over on a sunny day to soak up the country air and get away from it all. Spotting wildlife will have you keen to stay and there’s a cracking pub, The Devils Dyke, where you can refuel with good food and drink.

For day trips, you shouldn’t miss exploring colourful spots on the South Coast like Brighton , Eastbourne and Worthing, which will also offer great hotels. The Courtlands Hotel in Hove is a great option for those looking to splash out, while The Brighton Breeze Hotel is somewhere budget that I have stayed and can recommend.

English Countryside Getaways to Teesdale, The North Pennines

By Sarah Carter

Getaway to the little known Teesdale – part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The River Tees flows down through the dale, providing stunning waterfalls at Cauldron Snout, High Force and Low Force, with spectacular and easy walks along her banks.

The gateway to this glorious dale is the market town of Barnard Castle, named after the castle of the same name which was built in the 12 th century. Famous visitors to the town have included author Charles Dickens and landscape painter JMW Turner.

Here you’ll find great places to stay, including the friendly and welcoming 17 th century Old Well Inn , which backs onto the castle walls.

There are other fabulous cosy pubs and the magnificent Bowes Museum which boasts links to the Queen Mother. Explore the famous Butter Market or Market Cross, now serving as a beleaguered traffic island, but which was once the town jail!

There are great walks – a short 6km round trip takes you between the two main waterfalls further up the dale from Low Force to High Force and back. This is a stunning area of England in which to take a break, no matter what the time of year!

English Countryside Getaways to The Cotswolds

By Emily Cole

The Cotswolds is full of fantastic countryside; think thatched, honey coloured cottages nestling in the hollows of gently rolling hills, perfect for country walks.

There’s something for everyone in the Cotswolds. The most famous villages are Castle Combe, Bibury and Bourton on the Water, which are usually voted among the prettiest villages in the UK.

The Cotswold Way runs for 100 miles along the top of the hills linking Chipping Campden in the north of the region to Bath in the south.  Any section of this walk gives fantastic views and access to quaint towns.  Broadway Tower is a highlight along the route.

You can also discover a wealth of history in the region.  Sudeley Castle is a former royal palace and lies half in ruins, half still lived-in stately home.  Blenheim Palace is on the edge of the Cotswolds and is one of the most fantastic buildings in the UK. Cogges Manor Farm is a historic farm which was used in the filming of Downton Abbey.

There are numerous places to stay in the Cotswolds, although choosing a central location such as Barnsley House near Cirencester will allow you to get to both the north and south of the Cotswolds in less than an hour.

The Cotswolds are only a couple of hours away from London, making the region a perfect weekend getaway.

English Countryside Getaways to The Peak District

Just about an hour outside of Manchester lies the Peak District, a landscape like no other in Britain.

You will find rolling hills, moorland plateaus, and steep-sided deep dales. When you pair the amazing landscape with quaint villages housing amazing places to eat and drink, market towns, and historic houses, you are bound to have a vacation like no other.

Many people visiting the Peak District enjoy going out for a day hike that ends with a proper meal and ale at one of the many historic pubs you will find along the way.

Besides just hiking, you can go spelunking in a cavern, cycle the windy roads or even take a cable car up the famous Heights of Abraham.

If you don’t quite fancy the outdoor activities, there are plenty of villages to stop over and shop till you drop.

There are also plenty of charming bed and breakfasts to choose from if you would like to stay the night. While we were visiting we found a quaint little Airbnb to stay at where we were able to cook a full English fry up in the morning!

With everything the Peak District has to offer, it is definitely a must for anyone looking to visit a charming English countryside!

Timeshare resales in England

Buying Timeshare in England

A country that most people will have strong feelings about for one reason or another, England is very unique in its combination of vast and varied history, growing multicultural influence, luscious agricultural countryside and of course the Royal Family. Historic ruins, Cathedrals and entire cities dating back to centuries can be through throughout England where attractions like Stonehenge, Avebury, the Tower of London and the Royal Palace continue to amaze.

One of the reasons for Buying Timeshare in England is the archetypal “English” countryside which harks back to the romantic notions of literary past, of cottages, cream teas and the public house or “pub”. For the most dramatic scenery England has to offer, the national parks of the Lake District, Exmoor, Dartmoor and North York Moors are some of the best places to visit for the spectacular sights.

Buying timeshare in England can be considered an investment in your time on holiday or abroad. Whether you are looking to buy timeshare in England for use as a holiday home or while on business trips you will find a wide range of luxury hotels and resorts to choose from such as:-

The UK tourism market has undergone significant changes in the post-pandemic era. Now lockdown restrictions seem a distant memory, people have eagerly embraced leisure activities and sought ways to reconnect with their favourite pastimes. But now consumers once again have unrestricted access to overseas travel, what’s stuck and what’s returned to normal?

Here’s 5 trends we’ve spotted in 2023, and how to capitalise on them.

1. Train travel: As many people continue to work more regularly from home, rail has seen a huge shift towards leisure travel. Q1 2023, LNER reported passenger journeys at 111% versus 1999 and their research has found 65 per cent of people planning to take a leisure trip within the UK in the next 12 months.

The shift is so great that the rail industry is trialling carrying out essential engineering works during the week to keep customers moving at the weekend. Have you considered using your proximity to rail connections in your messaging?

2. Sustainability: There’s a growing focus on sustainability and eco-friendly practices within the leisure sector, with 69% of travellers reported to be actively seeking sustainable travel options. World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Research shows that this is particularly prevenient in the luxury sector, with around three quarters of high-end travellers considering paying extra to make their travels more sustainable.

Sustainability covers a wide range of issues, from the carbon required to get there, to protecting local communities and the environment. If your business is helping the local community, are you communicating this enough to your potential customers?

3. Outdoor activities: The pandemic gave us a greater appreciation for open spaces and fresh air. Outdoor activities have become increasingly popular with parks, gardens, and countryside areas witnessing a surge in visitors. If you’ve an outdoor element to your business, is it something you could emphasise further in your marketing?

4. VFM: As inflation bites , consumers are having to cope with rising living costs, stagnant discretionary incomes, and general uncertainty. On one hand, there is a strong desire to engage in fun experiences and activities, on the other hand, budgetary constraints lead consumers to adopt a more subdued approach to spending.

Understanding how to communicate the value of your product and addressing consumer motivations will be crucial for businesses operating in the leisure sector this year.

5. Digital Transformation: The leisure and hospitality industry witnessed a digital transformation during the pandemic. Businesses that barely had a website adapted to online booking, restaurants that once only took cash let you order and pay on your phone. Online platforms and apps have become essential tools for booking activities, classes, and events – consumers now expect a seamless digital booking experience. Prioritise what can you do to reduce steps in the customer journey and reduce friction when it comes to taking bookings.

Going on a holiday needn’t be a fraught experience …

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday

Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community

A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.

1. Book like an agent

“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.

2. Be an early bird

“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”

3. If you do book late, be flexible

Be open-minded …

Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.

4. Avoid peak season

The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”

5. Midweek can be more affordable

“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”

6. Take out travel insurance when you book

A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.

7. On solo trips, consider a group tour

‘Some companies offer specialist female-only tours.’

If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”

8. Have a daily budget

“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”

9. Consider all-inclusive options

“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”

10. Work your way around the world

“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”

11. Travel as sustainably as possible

‘By travelling sustainably, you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you.’

“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”

12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company

When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.

13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’

When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.

14. Embrace the great outdoors

‘The carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays.’

If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”

15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp

“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”

16. If the weather is terrible …

… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”

17. For best value destinations, try …

Belgrade has an underground culture scene similar to Berlin 20 years ago.

“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.

18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …

“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”

19. If in doubt, follow local people

“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”

20. And remember: you get what you pay for

“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.

See the First Bank Notes Featuring King Charles

The currency will go into circulation beginning in June.

preview for The Life of King Charles III

This morning, the Bank of England presented King Charles with the first bank notes featuring his image.

britain royals currency

Per Buckingham Palace, this is the first time The Bank of England has changed the image of the monarch on a banknote, as Queen Elizabeth was the first monarch to appear on a Bank of England note back in 1960. King Charles shared that he thought the design was "very elegant."

"I am very proud that the Bank is releasing the design of our new banknotes which will carry a portrait of King Charles III," Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement . "This is a significant moment, as The King is only the second monarch to feature on our banknotes."

You can see a close up of the £5 and £10 notes here:

king charles iii is presented with first bank notes featuring his portrait

The portrait of Charles on the new currency is based on a picture taken in 2013. Unlike in the image of Queen Elizabeth that was on UK bank notes, Charles does not wear a crown. The notes will enter circulation on June 5, 2024, but per the BBC , " there will be a gradual introduction for the King Charles banknotes, with the current Queen Elizabeth notes remaining in use until they become worn or damaged."

According the Bank of England , "Our approach is in line with guidance from the Royal Household , to minimise the environmental and financial impact of this change. This means the public will begin to see the new King Charles III notes very gradually." In December 2022, new fifty pence coins with Charles's image entered circulation, and in March 2023, the first King Charles stamps were issued.
