RVing as a Travel Nurse

RVing as a Travel Nurse 1

Travel nursing has always appealed to me, but I wasn’t sure it was possible once I was married and had children. I became a progressive care unit (PCU) registered nurse after having kids, and figured the travel nursing ship had sailed, or more appropriately, the RV had driven away. But that changed when I learned about a travel nursing family and began to research how I could make this work.

Finding the Right RV for Our Family

Once we realized we could make this happen, I set out to find a house on wheels that could accommodate myself, my husband, and our two children. Of course, it had to meet certain requirements since it would be our family’s full-time home instead of a weekend camper. We were leaving behind our five-bedroom, three bath home with a pool, to be semi-stationary for 13 weeks at a time, the length of a typical travel nurse contract. We ended up purchasing a fifth wheel with a bunkhouse.

My family and most other travel healthcare workers that travel with their families choose the RV lifestyle for a variety reasons, most of them similar.

  • You can provide consistency for your children which may ease the transition by always having your home with you.
  • You don’t have to pack up your whole household every three months, which is much more work when there is more than just you.
  • Sometimes you can find an RV park that is closer to nature than you would a short term rental or hotel.
  • You get to travel the country in a much different way, sometimes being able to stop in obscure locations you wouldn’t stop otherwise but provide amazing experiences.
  • It’s usually a much easier way to travel with pets.
  • You get to be a part of an amazing RV community that can understand your nomadic lifestyle and make lifelong friends along the way for both you and your children.

Taking Our Family On The Road

Being a travel nurse with a family takes creativity, research, and a whole lot of courage as you begin life on the road. I eventually came across a few families on social media pursuing the same lifestyle. They became my gurus. I reached out over social media to ask more in-depth questions and gained valuable insight. I found my favorite travel nurse agency through one connection. I also found out locations that were great and not so great for a family. I got to ask how it truly affected their families both good and bad.

Your children’s education is important, regardless of what lifestyle you choose. When you decide to bring your kids into a life of travel, you have to think about things like how will your children be schooled? Will you choose an online school format, “unschool”, buy a homeschool curriculum, or piece together your own?

Another thing to consider is your spouse’s or travel partner’s needs. Will they work? If so, how will that impact your daily life? For us, it made more sense for my husband to quit his job and focus on homeschooling our children. However, it wasn’t as easy of a transition as I expected. He worked since he was 14, without a break, and being a perfectionist in his work made him a bit of a workaholic. We struggled with feeling like we were both contributing- he was uncomfortable not contributing to our family’s finances, while I didn’t think I could homeschool our children full-time. It took a few months of adjusting for us to find our groove in this new life, but we eventually did.

Transitioning to a life of travel, especially one that involves downsizing to an RV, impacts other parts of your family’s life. For example, do you, your spouse, or your children have hobbies you want to continue? How will you make time and space for them?

Travel Nursing and RVing

When you decide to marry your travel nursing goals with your dream of RVing, you are now part of two communities; those who travel full-time either employed or not employed, and travel nurses, who do not all live in an RV. When I started researching the lifestyle and how we would transition into it, I found that we didn’t completely fit into any particular category of travelers. I wasn’t a travel nurse who was single and staying in hotels or rentals. We weren’t a family who was choosing to travel full-time in an RV and travel whenever, wherever we wanted. There are a lot of resources for these types of travelers, some of which were helpful, but only some of the information applied to our situation. You, too, may find yourself benefitting from understanding both but will also not feel like you 100% belong to either.

Thankfully, with a little more research we found communities of travel nurses who live in RVs and even some who travel with their families. Tapping into these resources can provide advice or give you support as you navigate this lifestyle.

Finding More RVing Travel Nurses

I have found that social media is the easiest and most reliable place to seek information as a traveler. There is a Facebook group specifically for travel nurse families that is available now but wasn’t when I first started out that is such a helpful resource. I also started an Instagram account and follow #travelnursefamilies so I can continue to find travelers like us to connect with. There is a travel nurse Facebook group for many kinds of different travelers, even one for RV nurses and newbies where there are nurses to support you on your journey. Becoming part of these virtual communities have helped me:

  • Learn about hospitals to which I want to apply
  • Get advice on reliable RV parks near my assignments
  • Learn about desirable (and undesirable) cities to visit
  • Keep in touch with what is going on in the travel nurse community, and the larger RVing community
  • Develop my own community for my family

All of the resources I have mentioned have done so much for our RV travel experience. I have been able to find reviews through Facebook groups on all the hospitals I have applied for. This has kept me taking contracts at all traveler friendly hospitals because there are horror stories of one’s that are not. We also never considered going to New Orleans for a contract due to hearing about all of the crime through the news but I read several times over on social media that nurses loved their contracts there so we took the chance and guess what?! My kids can’t stop talking about how much they love New Orleans. It’s distinct culture and food provided all of us an experience we couldn’t have anywhere else in this country. Connecting with other travel nurse families in any way you can is helpful to find suggestions on places that will provide not only a great work experience for you but also an adventurous time for your family.

Other Aspects of RVing and Travel Nursing to Consider

When considering becoming a travel nurse you have several decisions to make and a lot to contemplate for all involved.

Who is joining you or not joining in your journey? Will you leave your family behind while you try out traveling first? Does your spouse have to stay behind for work? Are you taking your pets and will they be allowed in most RV parks?

How much money do you need to make to cover your expenses? Most travel nurse families choose life in an RV because it’s easier and more consistent. There is the option for an agency to organize living arrangements for your family in the form of an apartment, a hotel room or other rentals. There is also the option to take the housing allowance from the agency and find your own mode of living, which can give you more flexibility if you choose to live in your own RV.

What a lot of travel nurses seem to miss, don’t understand, or get told incorrectly, is that you must duplicate expenses if you would like to receive tax free stipends. This brings us to the finances and how salary works for a travel nurse. You can take your salary either by duplicating living expenses, which then qualify you for a taxed hourly rate plus tax free housing and meals or you take a higher hourly rate that is completely taxed. To duplicate expenses is to maintain a tax home in your home state and to also pay for housing in the location of your job. You should always seek a tax professional for advice on how to maintain both and be in compliance, legally. Your established home state is also where you keep your primary nursing license which is an important step to not forget.

Healthcare Travel Agencies

In travel nursing, there are usually agencies who will find your travel contracts for you. For most travel healthcare workers this seems to be the most challenging, and overwhelming, decision.

  • You can choose to find contracts on your own. This may leave you limited in your facility options. However, there are some facilities that only do their own staffing, so contacting them yourself is your only way to go there.
  • There are possibly hundreds of agencies with their own recruiting teams. Each agency and recruiter has their own benefits. These can heavily affect your decision. Find a recruiter you can trust, and with whom you feel you work well. Think of it as picking your own boss, but they work for you. Personally, I find it best you have at least a couple you are working with to give you more options.

What is Your Why?

Perhaps the biggest thing to consider is why you want to RV as a travel nurse? Is it the travel, seeing the country with your family or alone? Is it the money to help you get out of debt? Or is it something else entirely?

Our desire to travel played a big factor in our decision. We love traveling, and as a result, spent a large amount of our budget on travel, whether it was quick weekend trips a few hours away or sailing through the Caribbean on a cruise. One day, we realized all the trips we had envisioned taking with our kids before they left our home were adding up, but our time with them was dwindling down. RVing felt like a way to better afford the time and expense of family travel now . Though it required us giving up the comforts of a stationary home (like our lovely pool and three bathrooms), our family has been able to see more of the country in the past 11 months than we could have otherwise.

You also need to consult your deciding partner in this matter. Do they have concerns holding them back from pursuing this lifestyle? I would say that I was all aboard the minute I came across this possibility, but my husband had some concerns. He had needed a career change for several years but, you know, something always comes up and he didn’t make a change. I figured I could make enough if we could reduce our expenses and he could homeschool our children on the road, or “roadschool”, but I had to bring the facts to our discussion to prove it. After talking it over extensively, and evaluating our options, we both agreed this would be a worthwhile adventure for our family.

As we’ve seen, the RV lifestyle has both it’s pros and cons as a travel nurse. Each person must decide for themselves what works best for their travel goals, career goals, and comfort. I am completely satisfied that we took the leap and made this our life. I’ve given our whole family experiences that we wouldn’t have had otherwise. Some travel nurses say that you shouldn’t jump into buying an RV until you know you will love travel nursing first, but I haven’t ever really followed any sort of typical standard in most things in my life, so why start now.

RVing as a Travel Nurse 2

Cristina Jackson travels the U.S. in a 41 foot fifth wheel with her husband, Nate, two children, Kaitlyn and Aiden, and their dog, Koda, while having her travel nursing career dictate their travels.   Primarily working as a progressive care unit nurse but constantly expanding skills and units with each contract. She’s been travel nursing and living in an RV nearly a year, originating from their home in Queen Creek, Arizona.   She loves being able to show her children history and locations rather than just read about them. Her family also loves the ability to spend a longer amount of time in each location and get a taste of becoming locals. I love how you worded this entire blog. It’s not “do this” “don’t do that” “pros vs cons”. It’s straight forward and perfect for those considering travel nursing. Thank you.

Thank you so much! There’s definitely not a one size fits all in travel nursing. Everybody’s circumstance is different and what they want in an experience is too.

I am thinking of getting into travel nursing with an RV but I am having trouble finding campgrounds that are open year round, allow longer than 30 day stays, etc. Do you know if any resources available to find this info?

Where are you looking specifically? I know the north can be very difficult to find RV parks in the winter but we tend to chase the sun and never had a problem in the winter in the warmer areas. Sometimes you can let them know your a nurse and they may let you stay longer than their usual open times. As far as long stays we’ve only come across maybe 2 RV parks that haven’t allowed it. I usually first go to travel nurse Facebook groups that are geared towards RV travel and look up other city or hospitals in the search bar and see where other nurses have stayed. Then I use Google and the RV Parky app to find any others.

I’m wanting to rent out a space to park an RV for nurses any ideas ?

where are you located!

I have a beautiful RV parking spot that I would like to offer to travel nurses. Where is the best website to list my rental?

We just listed our space in Mesa, AZ on Airbnb. Might be a good fit. Hip Camp might work for you as well.

Any suggestions on getting RV Camp spots when you only get 2 weeks before a new contract starts? We just got a contract and I’ve called almost every RV park in the 5-10 mile radius and they are all booked up for the summer. Thanks!

What did you end up doing? Any advice? My wife and I are in the same situation.

We have a beautiful piece of property in Colorado that we would love to rent out to traveling nurses. We just don’t know what sites to post to. Suggestions? We have a traveler that randomly found us and we love her!

We also have a space for an RV to host travel nurses. I’m a nurse that’s live and works in Santa Cruz, Ca. Would be fine with 13+ week stays .I’ll follow this thread. Thanks-

Sorry just seeing this post. My suggestion is you can list on airbnb, travel nurse gypsy housing facebook page, hipcamp, and if you see any other travel nurse housing fb pages.

My wife is looking at traveling nursing this August. She is a dialysis nurse. We have a 35 ft 5th wheel and plan on seeing the country. I am going to retire and travel with her. We also have a small dog and bird. We are going to keep our place in Florida. Can you reccomend agiencies and the best way to locate RV parks. Thank you.

Escapees has a park finding tool that you might find helpful!

Travel nursing in an rv: beyond hotels and airbnbs.

Whether you’re considering travel nursing for the first time or are well on your travel nurse journey , two questions to ask are “What are the different travel nurse housing options ?” and “Are my accommodations the best for me and my family?” Here are two travel nurses who decided to take their housing with them wherever they go, and they love living the travel nursing life in an RV.

Taking the leap

After working a contract position as a dialysis nurse for two years, Julie Stoddard decided to take the leap to travel nursing. “Four years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to move around, and travel nursing was the best thing for us,” she says. “I used to work on ships, so I was used to moving around and staying in one place wasn’t sitting well with me.”

Home health nurse Audra Beldon has been a nurse for five years and has chosen to work travel assignments for the past year — and she loves it. Audra and her husband decided the time was right since their kids were grown, and the compensation and benefits were “awesome.”

The advantages of taking your home with you

Julie Stoddard outside her RV

Audra and her husband, Jim, travel to assignments pulling their fifth-wheel trailer . Audra likes that she feels “at home” in her trailer with her husband and her two elderly cats. “We get to bring our cats with us. I get to come home, I can cook dinner. We have all the amenities of a house, so it’s nice.”

Her husband agrees. “I kind of like carrying my stuff with me,” Jim says. “I don’t like going on a plane somewhere for a week without packing two or three bags. I have toys, I have motorcycles. I have to have something to occupy my time here in the trailer, so I brought hobbies. I can’t do that in travel housing.”

Julie also loves that she’s not going into a stranger’s house. Living in their camper, she and her family are more comfortable in their own space. “You don’t have to worry about messing anything up — the kids don’t have to worry about spilling anything, because you’re always home.”

She says another huge benefit is saving money and the ability to be adventurous. “We’re a part of a bunch of online blogs for travel nurses, and a lot of them tout the camper lifestyle and offer great tips and communities,” Julie says.

Getting to assignments

Since Audra is a home health nurse, it requires travel to and from patients’ houses rather than working at the same location for the full assignment. So in addition to the truck they use to haul their trailer, they also bring along their family car.

“The car gets way better gas mileage than the truck,” Jim says. “If you’re in home health you have to drive to the patient’s houses, so we plant our trailer in a certain place thinking that’s where the center of her patients will be.”

Traveling with young children

Audra and Jim Belden and their children

Julie and her husband bring their eight- and seven-year-old children with them on the road . This means educating them is a consideration. In the end, she decided to do what she calls “unschooling.”

“My daughter gave kindergarten a try, but my son actually learned more in preschool.”

For Julie, “unschooling” consisted of learning what the kids are really interested in and using that as their curriculum. Julie is sure to maintain state educational standards, but her kids quickly tested out of their state’s standards for their respective grades.

“We find what their interest is, and we give them material or they go find it and do their own research,” says Julie. “This summer we did a cross-country trip to find historical points for each state we were in, so they learned about each state. When the kids get to do something hands on, they remember it more easily. It’s exciting and more interesting than just reading something they found in a book. Those are the kind of experiences we’re trying to get our kids to have.”

Planning for travel nursing in an RV

Since travel nursing in an RV or camper requires more planning than simply booking housing, Audra and Julie recommend doing your research so you’re not left without the necessities — things you may not think of like a carbon monoxide detector, two-way radio, and even a light-up collar for your pet.

Because their camper heats up pretty quickly when preparing meals, Julie says they cook outside as much as possible. “We also have to go grocery shopping every other day because the camper doesn’t hold much food.”

Audra and Jim recall a slight hiccup they had in the early days of their fifth-wheel living. When they were directed to park their trailer in what they were told was a beautiful spot on the third-tier of a campground, their 20,000-weight load wouldn’t make it up the hill. “It was a harrowing experience getting back down the hill with just my truck brakes,” he says.

“We now choose where to be and when to be there,” Audra says.

Truck and camper

Bringing family closer

When Audra’s husband Jim retired from being a police officer and became a stay-at home dad for their children, life on the road just made sense. She admits their 26-footer isn’t the largest of accommodations, but she says they feel more connected as a family.

Their camper has a queen bunk and a twin bunk with two recliners and a table settee area. “It’s tiny,” she says. “But as long as it’s nice out, we’re spending most of our time outside so you’re not feeling completely cramped. It’s just the seven-day stretch of rain when you start to feel it.”

Taking your housing with you also has other perks. Audra and Jim love anything outdoors, and are able to haul his motorcycle, their paddle board, and mountain bikes to enjoy the time they have together on their travels.

When looking into your next travel nurse assignment, a mobile home-away-from-home just might give you the freedom to choose your adventure and bring more of your creature comforts along for the ride.

Travel Nursing in an RV – Pros and Cons

Travel Nursing in an RV – Pros and Cons

By Mariam Yazdi, RN

My husband and I are both travel nurses and we started our journey in San Francisco. We got a taste for the real estate there when we found a studio apartment in the city for…wait for it…$2,600 a month. Yup, all 400 square feet of it. It was furnished, allowed dogs, and was leased to us for 3 months.

>> Click here to see available high-paying travel nurse opportunities!

After a few weeks into our assignment, we became inspired to buy a Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon, one of those nostalgic buses that look super cute on Instagram (#vanlife.) We bought a big orange one and used it as a means to see the country. We’ve used it to take multi-week road trips, as a temporary apartment when on assignment, and as a daily commuter.

This little van gave us a taste of setting up a portable living situation when going travel nursing and while living in this 60 square foot space was definitely challenging, there are many travel nurses that are doing it right! If you are considering taking your RV, camper, or any other home on wheels to your next travel assignment, add the following pros and cons to your research!

travel nurse rv blog

It’s all about the money, honey.

Cost of renting an apartment can be steeply more expensive especially when renting apartments in highly populated areas. From deposits to pet fees to up-charges for short-term rentals, these costs all add up and don’t “go anywhere” in comparison to spending the same money investing in an RV or RV-like home. If you’re able to get your hands on a deal for a mobile living space - your savings have begun. Oh and that housing stipend? Straight to the bank, baby.

The space is always yours.

No matter what happens, you always have a furnished space that feels like home. You know exactly where everything is. You know the intricacies and the idiosyncrasies of your space. And for all my healthcare germaphobes out there – you at least know that it’s only your cooties you’re dealing with, and not any previous unknowns.

Paws and portable snuggles.

We have always traveled with our two dogs, and from experience, transitions are the hardest on them. The quicker we get into a routine, the better for their digestive systems – and our sanity. When we’ve moved around in our VW van, however, our home stays familiar to them and they go through a more minimal period of acclimation. The tricky part is keeping the space cool, especially during times when we leave for the day or night.

You get to change your mind as easy as one, two, free.

There are a lot more RV parks than you’d think! If you claim your stake somewhere and decide you’re not vibing with it after a few weeks, you have all the freedom to pick up and head out to the next park that has a café and a swimming pool. (Seriously, don’t underestimate RV parks. There are some pretty sweet ones out there.)

Greater connection with the outdoors.

This comes naturally when living in a mobile space. It’s easy to get good sunlight and campsites typically have picnic tables and other outdoor amenities that draw people to enjoy the outer space. In contrast, it’s easy to get cooped up in an apartment, and there are way too many first-floor units out there that don’t get enough sunlight…even in the sunniest of cities.

You don’t get to move into a space that’s unique to that city.

Sometimes, I want to get a feel for the city, which to me means living in a space unique to that area, carving my place in the local community of permanent residents and transients alike. It makes me feel like I am truly “living” in the city, not just passing by.

You carry everything with you, like a turtle and its shell.

There’s something kind of freeing about only packing your clothes, laptop, and yoga mat when you move somewhere for three months. Walking into furnished apartments and setting up life doesn’t take but maybe half a day, and when the assignment is all done, packing up and peacing-out is a breeze. Maybe you even board a plane and hit up your next destination without a second thought.

What’s your bathroom situation?

You could have one of those sweet RVs that have a shower and toilet (and maybe even a tub). Or the camping site may have community showers and bathrooms. But if you’ve parked your VW Westy in the hospital parking lot like we did for a bit, you better get creative about how to stay hygienic and how to manage your waste. We have spent many weeks showering after work in the cath lab employee bathrooms, using a bucket and kitty litter when the going was inevitable, and stocking up on enough scrubs to make it through a couple weeks without needing to visit a laundry mat. Ideal? Not really. Adventurous? Arguable.

Any breakdowns and it’s your issue.

This is true of any renter vs owner situation. If you’re renting and the pipes freeze, your landlord better be high-tailing it over. But if you didn’t take proper precautions of your camper and find out the hard way about cold weather, now you’re shouldering that cost and labor, and it may not be pretty. Not to mention breakdowns that could happen in-transit; if you’re on deadline to make it to your first day, you may find yourself ditching your kombi - with half of your things in it - at a storage facility en route to your next assignment, coming back to save it later (been there, done that).

Storing the thing.

What do you do with this home on wheels when you’re done with it? If you’ve got a place to park it in between assignments, you’re set. But sometimes parents’ homes are already overcrowded with cars and a 5th wheel doesn’t do much to help. Also, if you take an extended break from using it, you must stay mindful of sun-damage, mold, and other unfortunate things that could happen when a space goes unoccupied for long.

The Bottom Line

When you decide to go travel nursing, you must ultimately do what makes you happiest; this will get you through the toughest time of either option - and there will be tough times. Whether it’s fixing the AC on your home at a truck stop in 100-degree weather, or when you’re on your hands and knees scrubbing your apartment floor (after spending all day moving out) in order to avoid the $300 fee your complex will charge you if you’re unit is not “move-in ready.” Make the decision that best speaks to your soul (and your wallet) and those rough times will all be worth it!

Travel Nursing in an RV (A Visual Intro)

travel nurse rv blog

Have you been scrolling through Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest lately? Maybe you’ve been watching TV or talking to your travel nursing friends or maybe you’ve been wondering how to save money, travel more and shower less?

Likely you have noticed the growing trend of tiny living and all the hashtags that come with it and wondered: “Is there a nurse who lives the lifestyle that could tell me all about it in a relatable and down to earth way without trying to sell me something?”

Hi {insert waving hand}, I am living the lifestyle and have no inventory of stickers or t-shirts with my insta handle on them to sell to you.  ‍

Part I - Travel Nursing in an RV

In the first part of this series I am going to share my story of how I found myself living the RV travel nursing lifestyle and hopefully provide some inspiration to those of you who’ve considered pursuing this lifestyle!  ‍

Russ Mortland RN and three kids hiking on dirt trail with trees in the background travel nursing in an RV

In the Summer of 2016, I was up late at night binge watching YouTube videos when I discovered a family of five that was traveling full-time in their Airstream camper. The proverbial lightbulb appeared over my head as I continued the sidebar spiral of “recommended videos” about RV living .

For those of us nurses who have worked night shift , we know that our 2:00AM ideas and dreams don’t seem so great in the light of day. However, this idea turned into an obsession. Later that night, I woke my wife and pitched my idea of living full-time in an RV while working as a travel nurse.  ‍

airstream RV on desertscape with mountains shrouded in clouds in the background travel nursing in an RV

I share all my late-night ideas with her including my desire to buy a tortoise during our sophomore year of nursing school, or the time I wanted to start a line of alpaca knitted boots and for some unexplained reason call them “Yaks.”

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s practically second nature for her to nod and smile as soon as my eyes become saucers and I yammer on like a toddler after cake. She was seven-months pregnant at the time, and we owe so much to those influential hormonal fluctuations that prompted her to say, “YES!” with very little lobbying effort required... or maybe she just wanted to go back to sleep, but either way, it worked! ‍

Making Plans and Getting Started

This obsession would quickly lead my wife and me to decide not to pursue CRNA school and instead dive into a researching frenzy to see if we could make our dream our new reality.

Fast forward a couple months, add one more baby, and you’ll see us draining our life savings, taking out a significant personal loan, and wiring that money to a man in California we’ve never met, who claimed to have an Airstream that we had never seen.  ‍

large truck and airstream rv parking underneath large tree with grassy field in the foreground travel nursing in an RV

Even our precious two-week old baby, Arlowe, knew it was a questionable plan. (She has since recanted.) In a six-month span, we went from house hunting and school planning to Googling stuff like, “Where does the poop go? How do you safely tow a travel trailer? How to make avocado toast? How much does it cost to stay at an RV park? Mobile internet options?,” and “Birkenstocks for the whole family?”

There is an overabundance of RV-lifestyle information on the web, and it can be overwhelming to sort through. The advice I provide is based solely from personal experiences and insights collected over three and half years of traveling full-time in our 240sqft home. Quite unlike the scrub section for men, there are endless options for how to go about this lifestyle.  ‍

russ mortland children eating melon on the steps of their airstream travel nursing in an RV

The decision to become a RV travel nurse is one of the most personally and financially rewarding decisions we have made as a family, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, not even a multi-million dollar boot company called Yaks.

Next time…  ‍ ‍

YouTube inspiration and hormonal impulses aside, there were many practical reasons to dive into travel nursing. Coming soon!

Travel Nursing in an RV: 10 Things You Need to Know!

travel nurse rv blog

Table of Contents

Travel nurses have several options when it comes to living arrangements. One unconventional but increasingly common choice is to take home with you to each new job by investing in a recreational vehicle (RV).  Although this is a great idea, it doesn’t come without complications. People are often hesitant to get into the RV life because they:

  • Are nervous about driving or pulling a vehicle longer than their car;
  • Are scared about driving and/or parking such a large vehicle in reverse;
  • Worry about everything it takes to set up an RV;
  • Fear that they won’t be able to find an RV park close to the hospital.

Read on to discover why some travel nurses choose the RV lifestyle. Then, we will discuss the pros and cons of living in an RV. Finally, we will review 10 things to know about Travel nurse RV living.

RV Living is a Great Choice for Adventurous Nurses

For many, the RV lifestyle evokes a sense of adventure. Can your partner work remotely? Is your partner a healthcare worker, and both of you can find travel assignments together? Do you have a family? RV living can be a grand adventure for everyone in your life. It may be untraditional, but this lifestyle can enrich your life in ways you didn’t know possible.

Travel nurse RV living can be a pathway to more freedom and adventure compared with traditional housing options. For travel nurses that also crave the creature comforts of home, what better option is there than to take home with you wherever you go?

Pros of RV Travel Nursing

For registered nurses who embrace living in an RV, there are several pros.

Home feels like home

Traditional housing options require you to either stay in the hotel room provided or use the housing stipend to find a furnished short-term rental. Those spaces won’t ever feel like “home,” and don’t forget all the packing and unpacking required when moving to a new city!

Bring your family along for the adventure

Living in an RV is a great way to bring family with you, whether the family is a partner , kids, or even furry. This living arrangement offers several options for home-schooling or ‘unschooling’ your kids. Speaking of your furry friends, pets adapt to new locations better because their space remains the same.

Explore the country

Traveling in an RV gives you more freedom as you travel to each new city. Enjoy the sights along the way!

Cons of RV Travel Nursing

RV living isn’t all fun and games. Here are some cons to consider.

Contingency plans

RVs are complicated machines, and things will break. Create a backup for how you would get to your next assignment if your RV breaks down.

Maintenance

Speaking of things breaking down, you will bear the cost of maintenance and repairs. With traditional travel housing options, you call maintenance when something goes wrong. That’s not an option if you own your RV, so make sure you save some of the tax-free stipend to pay for repairs.

Transportation

Once you arrive in your new city, how will you get to and from work? RV parks are typically far from large hospital systems. You’ll need a plan for getting to and from your assignment—a car? Rideshare? Bus stops? These are all things to consider during your research.

On a more personal note, RV living can make it more challenging to get a ‘feel’ for the cities you visit. RV parks tend to be outside the city centers, so your experience will be different. If the thing you love about traveling is being in the major metro areas with amenities and entertainment close by, living in an RV might not be the right choice.

Travel Nurse RV Tips to Consider

Now that we’ve reviewed some of the pros and cons, here are 10 Things you need to know about travel nurse RV living!

Research and Prepare

Go to as many rv shows as you can..

Look at every RV you think you would be even remotely interested in.  After a while, you will get a sense of the space and amenities you want and need in an RV.

RENT AN RV FOR THE WEEKEND AND GO CAMPING.

To truly understand what it is like to live in a 20-foot home, go camping for the weekend or even a full week. Some people can’t handle this!

CONNECT WITH OTHER TRAVEL NURSES

There are several online communities and forums where you can ask anything. Other travel nurses that have embraced the RV lifestyle give excellent advice regarding their favorite cities, campsites, RVs, and more.

Ready to Purchase

Buy a smaller, used rv to start with..

I would look for somewhere close to a 20-foot-long camper. This option will allow you to test-drive the lifestyle without breaking the bank. You will find out what you like and what you don’t like before investing in a new RV.

GET LEVELING BARS AND SWAY CONTROL.

If you buy a travel trailer, ensure you get the leveling bars and sway control. These items increase stability when pulling, especially on the highway.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TOW VEHICLE CAN HANDLE THE WEIGHT OF THE RV.

To be safe, we usually tow at a 75-percent rate. So, if your truck can pull 10,000 pounds, you need a trailer that weighs no more than 7,500 pounds. You also must remember that all your stuff will add to the total weight.

CONSIDER YOUR PERSONAL VEHICLE NEEDS.

If you get a motorhome, you’ll need to research how your everyday car, or ‘toad,’ can be towed. You will find out if you can tow your vehicle with all four wheels down, two wheels down, or if you need to purchase an additional trailer, so all four wheels are off the ground.

Enjoy your new Adventure!

Allow plenty of time to get from one travel assignment to the next..

I drive no more than 65 miles per hour on the freeway. Also, make sure you start looking for a gas station when you have half a tank of gas remaining.

RELAX ABOUT SET-UP AND TAKE-DOWN.

RV people are some of the nicest people on earth! I have never been to a park where someone was unavailable to help.

FIND THE TRAVEL JOB THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU.

Work with a travel agency that has experience working with other travel nurses that have embraced the lifestyle. An experienced travel nurse recruiter will help you find assignments near quality RV campgrounds, so you can focus on your next adventure.

TAKE THE LEAP!

Just like the leap into travel healthcare was scary, taking off in an RV can be scary. You will honestly never know if living in an RV is for you unless you try.
