My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends a Safaricom sim card for traveling in Kenya. It is slightly more expensive than the other mobile internet operators, but it has by far the best 4G/5G network coverage in Kenya. You can get 15 GB data for around $18 USD.

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Kenya in 2024 is an e-sim card. Arrange everything online in just a couple clicks and e-sim plans for Kenya already start from $9 USD.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Kenya via SimOptions , Nomad or Airalo .

Local prepaid sim cards for Kenya are cheaper than global travel sim cards. I wrote an article with a  comparison of the best international sim cards in 2024  to show the difference.

However, an international sim card comes in handy when traveling often and crossing borders a lot. It also gives you the convenience of arriving prepared and being online when the plane lands.

Very important when buying a prepaid sim card in Kenya, getting an e-sim or an international sim card for Kenya is that you have to make sure your phone is unlocked. All these ways of staying connected only work if you have an unlocked phone. If you are not sure about this then ask your mobile internet provider in your home country before traveling to Kenya.

An old school way of stay connected is a  portable WiFi device , read my honest review in the link. Personally I am not a fan but for those that have locked phones it could be handy.

Best e-sim cards for Kenya

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Kenya in 2024 is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an e-sim card for Kenya on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Kenya e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Kenya it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Kenya.

Why buying a sim card for Kenya

Most hotels, restaurants, bars and lodges offer free WiFi so why buying a sim card for your trip to Kenya. Well it is very simple, you can’t rely on the WiFi, it is often not working or way too slow. Uploading a video to your Instagram story could take ages.

Buying a local sim card makes traveling so much easier, but also safer. Having an internet connection at hand give you the opportunity to order an Uber, get direction from Google Maps when you get lost, solve language problems by translation apps, book a last minute hotel, find a good restaurant nearby, etc.

Many reasons why I advice travelers to get a local sim card on arrival or order an e-sim card for Kenya on the internet.

Where to buy a sim card for Kenya

Nairobi international airport.

Buying a local prepaid sim card in Kenya on arrival at the airport is the most convenient place to buy a sim card. Luckily this is pretty well arranged in Kenya and at both international airports, Nairobi and Mombasa, there are sim card shops that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

When flying to Nairobi check out my guide for buying a sim card at Nairobi Airport .

Official retail store mobile internet providers

If for some reason you couldn’t buy a sim card at the airport or may be you arrived in Kenya overland just like Traveltomtom once did, you will find out that there are uncountable places where you can buy local prepaid sim cards in Kenya.

In the bigger cities there are kiosks around town and little pop up stores, but I recommend you to go to an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. Simply locate the nearest one around you by using Google Maps. At an official retail store you get the best service and advice and most important is that everything is done by the book and they make sure that when you walk out of the store everything is set up and working.

Interested to see what it is like buying a local prepaid sim card in Kenya then have a look at my complete vlog on my YouTube Channel.

As mentioned already there are also several ways to buy a sim card for Kenya on the internet. The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Kenya is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online within just a couple minutes.

But if your phone is not e-sim compatible then you want to look into buying a prepaid international sim card for Kenya .

Mobile internet operators in Kenya

There are 4 main mobile internet providers in Kenya:

All of the above mobile internet providers operate on their own mobile network, some have better network coverage than the others. Faiba is a fairly new mobile internet operator on the Kenya telecom market and Telkom is also a much smaller operator compared to Airtel and Safaricom.

When you travel to Kenya you will see the green color of Safaricom everywhere! They are the biggest mobile internet operator, Airtel and Telkom stores can be found pretty easy as well, but a Faiba store is definitely harder to find.

Prepaid sim card registration in Kenya

Every prepaid sim card needs to be registered on your name and passport number, so bring your passport when buying a prepaid sim card in Kenya. The process is easy and fast and shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.

In most other Eastern Africa countries buying a local sim card is a pain as they need your fingerprint, a passport photo and so on. Check out my Uganda sim card guide for example, the process is hilarious. Luckily not in Kenya.

When you buy a prepaid sim card in Kenya you will get a physical prepaid sim card with a phone number that starts with: +254. As per February 2024 it is still very difficult to get an e-sim card when buying a sim card in Kenya. Most phone stores still only offer physical prepaid sim cards only.

Best 4G/5G network in Kenya in 2024

It is fair to say that the 4G network of Telkom and Faiba are way too small and not recommended for tourists. Especially if you are on the road exploring Kenya. If you travel off the beaten path the Telkom and Faiba networks are simply too weak.

Is there 5G in Kenya?

Yes, there is 5G in Kenya. Only recently Safaricom launched their 5G network  in the cities of Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii and Kakamega and they expect to expand that to over 150 cities across Kenya in the next 12 months. Find here more info about the Safaricom 5G network service .

All other mobile internet providers in Kenya are trying to keep up with Safaricom, but you will see from the below comparison of the  Kenya network coverage maps  that Safaricom stands out when it comes to the best network coverage in Kenya.

Telkom 4G network coverage map

telkom 4g 5g network coverage map kenya 2024

On the Telkom website they are talking about which towns are covered by a Telkom 4G network. All major towns are listed, but they only list 32 towns and cities. Any clue how big Kenya is? What does that mean if you go even a little off the beaten path? Therefore a Telkom prepaid sim card is not recommended for tourists.

Faiba 4G network coverage map

faiba 4g 5g network coverage map kenya 2024

They claim to have the fastest mobile data internet, but ONLY in major cities in Kenya. It is therefore NOT recommend to buy a Faiba sim card if you are traveling to Kenya.

Airtel 4G network coverage map

airtel 4g 5g network coverage map kenya 2024

Although Airtel is the second best when it comes to 4G network in Kenya, it does not even come close to the 4G network of Safaricom. They are investing heavily to update the Airtel 4G network , check the latest details in the link.

Safaricom 4G/5G network coverage map

safaricom 4g 5g network coverage map kenya 2024

There is no doubt that Safaricom has by far the best mobile network in Kenya in 2024. Period.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Kenya in 2024.

After comparing the network coverage maps of all the Kenya mobile internet providers we can already conclude that based on the 4G/5G network in Kenya alone Traveltomtom recommends a Safaricom sim card for traveling to Kenya.

Prices Kenya prepaid sim cards

All the info below is updated with the latest info and prices as per February 2024. Prices are in Kenyan Shilling: $1 USD = 162 KES and 1,000 KES = $6.15 USD.

travel sim kenya

Let’s start with the smallest operator. A Faiba sim card is free and can be registered in one of their shops and they actually have amazing data packages. Here are some of the Faiba prepaid data plans:

  • 8 GB data for 1 week = 300 KES ($1.9 USD)
  • 15 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
  • 25 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)

When it comes to the best data package deals in Kenya, Faiba is by far the best! Faiba already offers an e-sim for Kenya. For more info check the Faiba website .

Calling credit can be added separately, the rate is 2 KES/min.

Topping up a Faiba sim card can easily be done online through their app, however you need to register an Mpesa account, etc. Not preferably for tourists. Topping up with other providers can be done literally everywhere on the side of the road at one of the million kiosks. I am NOT exaggerating! LOL

After I showed you the weak network, this is another reason why I would NOT recommend tourists to buy a Faiba sim card in Kenya.

travel sim kenya

A Telkom sim card costs 50 KES, but comes with 50 KES credit, you will then need to buy a data package for internet. Here are some of their best data plans:

  • 2.5 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
  • 5 GB data for 1 month = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
  • 12 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)

As you can see prices for data bundles in Kenya are cheap for Western tourists. For more info check the  Telkom Kenya website .

Airtel Kenya

An Airtel sim card cost 100 KES and comes with 50 KES airtime. This airtime can be used as credit to put towards any data bundles. Here are some of their most common bundles:

  • 3 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
  • 6.5 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
  • 5 GB data for 1 month = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
  • 12 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)
  • 20 GB data for 1 month = 1,500 KES ($9.3 USD)

Airtel is offering Free WhatsApp with its data bundles, but that is a joke. Because the ‘free WhatsApp’ is capped at 50 MB. That is sending 5 photos and a video! LOL

Airtel and Telkom prices are more or like the same. Check the  Airtel website  for more info.

A Safaricom prepaid sim card costs 50 KES, but also comes with 50 KES airtime to use for voice or data. They offer daily, weekly and monthly data bundles:

  • 1 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
  • 3 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
  • 5 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)
  • 15 GB data for 1 month = 2,000 KES ($12.4 USD)

As you can see Safaricom is significantly more expensive compared to Telekom, Faiba and Airtel. However their 4G/5G network is also much better. For more info check the  Safaricom website .

As of February 2024 Safaricom offers e-sim cards for tourists. When buying a Safaricom prepaid sim card in an official Safaricom store in you can opt for an e-sim card for 250 KES extra. Great! But still, not every Safaricom store offers e-sim cards.

For example at Nairobi International Airport they had no e-sim cards available in February 2024. It is a bit a hit or miss.

To request you remaining balance with Safaricom you can dial: *144# and to activate voice and data bundles dial: *544#.

Best sim card for Kenya in 2024

After Traveltomtom's comparison of the prepaid sim card plans and prices of all the mobile internet operators in Kenya it is easy to conclude that Safaricom is relatively more expensive than other mobile internet providers. However, prices for Kenya tourist sim cards with data are cheap compared to most Western countries and therefore it is not the price that is the most important when choosing the best prepaid sim card for Kenya.

The most important when choosing a sim card for Kenya is the 4G/5G network coverage. Especially if you are traveling in Kenya and staying in some off the beaten path lodges in National Parks. Traveltomtom comes to the easy conclusion that  Safaricom is the best sim card for Kenya in 2024.

Traveltomtom is an advocate for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. They are very convenient and simple to use. However, fact is that e-sim cards for Kenya are more expensive than local prepaid sim cards.

The best value e-sim card for Kenya is offered by Nomad and it gives you 10 GB data for $37 USD.

That said, e-sim cards are so easy to get that I often happily pay the higher price. Plus you are online as soon as the plane touches the ground and you don't need to buy a sim card on arrival in Kenya.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Kenya online

Arrive prepared in Kenya with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Kenya, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

  • 10 GB data for 14 days = $49.90 USD

Also a last reminder that if your phone is e-sim compatible you can order a Kenya e-sim card and arrange everything online within just a couple minutes. No more visiting a sim card shop, just a couple clicks and you are done.

My experiences buying a sim card in Kenya

The first time I visited Kenya was on my big overland trip in Africa and crossed the land border from Uganda. Right at the border there were no sim card shops and I could not find a place to buy a sim card for Kenya. Just 1 minute down the road there were plenty of phone shops, but since I was traveling in a bus I couldn't get off. I had to wait until I got to Kisumu to buy my sim card for Kenya.

Once in Kisumu I went straight to an official Safaricom retail store and got myself a Kenya prepaid sim card. It was done in less than 5 minutes. All I needed to do is give my passport and look into the camera for a photo.

I got connected to Safaricom and wanted to buy the 500 KES data bundle with 3 GB for 1 week. But when I dialled *544# it straight away gave me a promotion offer: 250 KES for 5 GB for 1 week! Damn Safaricom you just made another prepaid costumer very happy.

During my trip to Kenya I used more than 20 GB data and every time I could use the 5 GB top up option for 250 KES. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice for buying a Safaricom prepaid sim card in Kenya.

When traveling to Kenya again at the end 2023 I found out that Safaricom offers e-sim cards for tourists in their official retail store. At first I tried at Nairobi International Airport, but with no success. So the next day I went to a Safaricom store in central Nairobi and I bought an e-sim card. As I stayed for more than 2 weeks I needed a couple top ups. I found amazing Safaricom prepaid data plans for 2,000 KES ($12.3 USD) that gave me 30 GB data.

I hope all the tips and tricks for buying a Kenya sim card were helpful. If you have any additional questions or info please leave me a comment below.

Kenya SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 23, 2024 | Africa , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Kenya soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Kenya SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Kenya in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Kenya. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Swahili – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Kenya.

Kenyan safari, Africa

Best SIM Cards In Kenya

If you’re traveling in Kenya, we recommend using a SIM card from Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Africa , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other African countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Kenya

You can either buy a Kenya prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an African prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom.

Nairobi skyline, Kenya

Safaricom SIM Cards

Safaricom offers several different types of data-focused plans:

  • 1 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 250 ($2.04)
  • 2.5 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
  • 7 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 1000 ($8.18)
  • 20 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 2000 ($16.35)
  • 40 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 3000 ($24.53)

Airtel SIM Cards

Airtel has three different prepaid plans available:

  • 2 GB, valid for 1 day for KES 99 ($0.81)
  • 6.5 GB, valid for 7 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
  • 50 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 3000 ($24.53)

Telkom SIM Cards

Telkom offers several SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 2 GB, valid for 1 day for KES 100 ($0.82)
  • 2.5 GB, valid for 7 days for KES 250 ($2.04)
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
  • 12 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 1000 ($8.18)
  • 30 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 2000 ($16.35)

Overall, we think Safaricom is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Kenya Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Nepal is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid African SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer one different package that covers Kenya:

  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Kenya or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Africa.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Kenya

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Kenya.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs for travelers on eSIM Roamers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs for Kenya.

Airalo Kenya

If you want to buy an eSIM for Kenya, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Africa and Kenya. I’ve been using Airalo for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $16.50
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $23.50
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $36.50

  • 1 GB, valid for 30 days for $27
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $59

The options mentioned above are part of The Hello Africa package and offer coverage in 27 countries, including Kenya.

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Kenya

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Kenya or even an eSIM for your travels in Kenya is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Africa without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an African plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Kenya if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Kenya in 2024

travel sim kenya

If you’re planning a trip to Kenya, having a sim card is essential for staying connected during your visit. Whether it’s finding your way around unfamiliar cities or keeping in touch with loved ones, having internet access on the go can make your travel experience much more convenient.

While roaming is an option, the costs can quickly add up, especially when traveling internationally. Therefore, we highly recommend either getting an eSim or a local sim card to take advantage of local phone rates.

Thankfully, obtaining either option in Kenya is hassle-free. To help you make the best choice, this guide provides all the information you need to know about purchasing a sim card in Kenya, featuring updated pricing and the ultimate sim card option for your needs.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in kenya for tourists.

The best sim card in Kenya is the Safaricom prepaid data bundle plan. For 1,000 KES (around $7 USD) you will get a hefty 7GB data which is valid for 30 days. This should be plenty of data for most visitors, but if it’s not enough for you it is still cheap enough to buy 20GB for 2,000 KES (around $14 USD).

Safaricom, besides having a fun name, offers the best and most extensive 4G and 5G mobile networks in Kenya. This just means that with them you will have the best chance of connecting to the internet as well as the fastest download speeds, which is why they are easily my number one recommendation in Kenya.

If you value convenience then you should also check out the Airalo Kenya eSim . eSims are always better than physical sim cards, however, I can’t recommend an eSim in Kenya if you’re looking for the best value. They are not at all competitively priced so you will be paying more for less data.

Kenya Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Kenya costs 1,000 KES in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Kenya will cost between $9 USD and $36.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Kenya which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $23.50 USD.

Kenya Sim Card Providers

In Kenya, Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom are the main sim card providers, offering a wide range of services to meet the communication needs of the population.

Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator, is well-known for its extensive coverage and reliable services. Their products include voice calls, SMS, data plans, and mobile money services through M-Pesa, which has revolutionized the financial landscape in Kenya.

Airtel, another major player in the market, competes with Safaricom by offering affordable voice and data plans. They have expanded their coverage and provide excellent network speed and quality service.

Telkom, on the other hand, focuses on delivering affordable and accessible internet connectivity solutions. They offer a variety of data bundles and packages that cater to both individual and business customers.

Overall, these three providers provide competitive services and continuously innovate to stay ahead in the Kenyan market.

Safaricom Tourist Sim

Safaricom is a leading telecommunications company in Kenya, providing a range of services to locals and tourists alike. How to Get a Sim Card in Kenya

Identify mobile providers: Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom are your best options in Kenya.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Kenya

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Kenya at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Kenya then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Kenya have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Kenya are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Kenya with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Kenya. The Airalo Kenya eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $23.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Kenya without having to venture outside.

Airalo Kenya

Our preferred eSim provider in Kenya is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Kenya and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Kenya eSim uses the Airtel network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Airtel networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Kenya.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Kenya eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $9 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $16.50 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $23.50 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $36.50 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 3GB data plan for $23.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Kenya

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Kenya eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Kenya eSim uses the Airtelnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Kenya

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Kenya eSim:

6GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $44 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, refers to a digital SIM card that is already built into devices like smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there is no need to physically insert or remove an eSIM.

Instead, the eSIM is integrated directly into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This enables users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of physically swapping SIM cards.

The advent of eSIM technology offers users convenience, flexibility, and simplicity, particularly for individuals who frequently switch between mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, making it more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections using a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually input the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the selected mobile network, providing access to voice, data, and messaging services just like a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several advantages of using an eSIM:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans, which is especially helpful for frequent travelers.

– Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on one device, separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

– Space-saving: Embedded eSIMs eliminate the need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space in the device for other components.

– Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, without a physical SIM card or store visit.

– Future-proofing: As eSIM technology gains traction, more networks and providers offer support, ensuring access to new services and offerings.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Kenya SIM Cards: 5 Reasons You Need to Buy One in 2023

Wondering if you need a kenyan sim card.

The answer is YES! – especially for solo travelers in Kenya, you really do need a Kenya Sim Card.

Kenya is a wonderful country, but its technology infrastructure isn’t as sophisticated as some countries, so a SIM card with data is the only way to ensure you’re connected at all times.

In this article, you’re going to discover the best Kenya SIM cards, where you can get yours online, and the Top 5 reasons why buying a Kenya SIM Card is a smart, safe idea.

While in some countries, you can get away with jumping on free public WiFi throughout the town, Kenya simples isn’t fully there yet. Some of the major restaurants do have WiFi, but it’s only accessible from within their premises.

Because of this, you’ll need a Kenya SIM card with enough data to cover your whole trip.

Ready to discover all your options for buying a Kenya SIM Card? Let’s dive in, starting with some SIM card FAQs and the best Kenya SIM card company to use.

Following that, you’ll learn how to change your SIM card, and five reasons to get a SIM Card for Kenya.

Table of Contents

What is a sim card.

Kenya SIM Card

Before we continue, let’s take one second to clear up what this SIM card thing actually is!

SIM stands for  Subscriber Identity Module . A SIM is basically a tiny chip on a plastic card that goes into your phone, and essentially “connects” your phone to your phone number.

Safaricom 4G SIM card

Safaricom: Best SIM Card for Kenya

The Kenya SIM card you’ll want to buy is from  Safaricom . This is Kenya’s largest cell phone service provider, so a Safaricom SIM Card in Kenya will give you the most coverage throughout the country.

🤔 WHAT OTHER KENYA SIM CARD COMPANIES ARE THERE?

You can also get an Airtel Kenya SIM card or use Telcom or Faiba.

These are liked by customers as they are the least expensive, and also known to have the most dropped calls and weakest signal — so you do get what you pay for.

📲 SIM CARD SIZES

Depending on your cell phone, you’ll need one of these three sizes: Chip, Microchip, or Nanochip.

Luckily, the all providers featured in this article work for all sizes.

Word of warning: If you’re buying a Faiba SIM card, you’ll want to google your phone’s specs to find out if it’s compatible with your device or directly contact their customer service .

How Much Does a SIM Card Cost in Kenya?

SIM cards in Kenya vary in price, but shouldn’t be more than $2 USD.

With this empty card, you will have to then fill it with data or airtime so that the card has use — as without, the card has no function.

How much data you want to buy, and how much each Kenya phone company charges — will all vary.

As a general ballpark figure, since I only recommend using Safaricom, you can expect to pay about $7 USD for 8gb of data, 400 minutes of talk time, 1000 SMS and WhatsApp Free for a whole month. This $7, plus the $1-2 cost of the card itself, means it will cost you only about $10 to get your SIM card.

How to Set Up a SIM Card in Kenya

With all featured SIM cards, there’s no set up required. Simply turn off your phone, swap out your current SIM card for the new one, turn your phone back on, and you’re good to go.

But before this, there is a mandatory SIM Card registration required to be done by all providers. For your SIM card to be registered in Kenya, you will need to visit an authorised agent or go directly to the provider’s offices physically.

Once you swap SIMs, you’ll have a Kenya number that starts with +254, as the SIM is basically what connects the phone to the phone number.

Remember to let friends and family know about your temporary +254 Kenya number, which will be located on the SIM card packaging.

After your trip, when you return your original United States SIM card, your phone will automatically revert back to your U.S. number.

How to Change a SIM Card

Never changed a SIM Card before? No worries; it’s super easy.

Each SIM card provider allows customers to change or replace their SIM cards incase they have misplaced them. To complete the replacement procedure, you’ll need to purchase a new replacement card and visit any authorised agent with your national id or passport and you will done in minutes.

Another method is by calling the provider’s customer service number and ask for the replacement to be done from the comfort of your home. Take note, you’ll be required to provide your identification details as well as recent activities performed on your lost SIM card .i.e: frequently contacted numbers, recent mobile money transactions or your wallet balance.

One thing to keep in mind is that SIM cards are tiny. Whatever you do —  Do not lose your U.S. SIM card  — so make sure to store it somewhere very secure.

4 Reasons to Buy a Kenya SIM Card For Your Trip

It’s safer to have one.

The reality for most people is that their cell phone is almost a physical extension of themselves.

We’re so used to having it that we forget that it can actually be a lifesaving tool, and that it’s the thing we’d reach for in an emergency. Is travel really the time to  not  have phone access?

Your Loved Ones Will Thank You

The people back home will not only want to see your photos and videos, but they’ll also want to know you’re safe and enjoying yourself.

Access to Travel Apps You Need For Kenya

While traveling, you need more access to apps than in daily life.

In Kenya, you’ll likely need Google Translate to communicate. Being in a new city means constant use of a Maps app so you don’t get lost.

You’ll also likely be using Uber a lot more, not to mention your Airbnb app, banking app, TripAdvisor, etc.

They Aren’t Very Expensive

If you’re only visiting Kenya for a few days, a monthly subscription on Safaricom network will give you 8gb of data, 400 minutes of talk time, 1000 SMS and WhatsApp Free for less than $8 USD.

For all the convenience you get from having data and Kenya cell service, and how much stress this will alleviate from the whole travel process — it’s a relatively small price to pay.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Kenya

You can absolutely wait to buy a SIM card in Kenya when you arrive at the airport, or when you leave the airport at any of the providers’ authorised agents.

If you’re going to wait to get one until you leave the airport, have plans for how you’ll get to your accommodation.

Will My Phone Work in Kenya?

In order for a SIM card swap to work, your phone must be unlocked.

Nowadays, most phones come unlocked, but this isn’t always the case. To see if yours is, call your cell company and ask. If it’s not, they can unlock it for you for free in just seconds.

Note:  When calling, let your company know you need the phone unlocked for travel, and that you’ll be using an international SIM card once it’s unlocked.

🤔 IS THERE 5G KENYAN PHONE SERVICE?

Yes; at least, but only in select areas and location. Use this link to check the coverage in your area. In fact, the cell service Kenya has is actually 4G and 3G.

Final Thoughts: How to Buy a Kenya SIM Card

There are several ways to buy a Kenya SIM card.  For convenience, you’ll want to get one immediately you get into the country.

I would recommend you get a Safaricom SIM card. As Kenya’s largest cell service provider, you’ll get the best reception in the places — even if you’re venturing off the beaten path in Kenya.

Best eSIM for Kenya (Stay Connected While You Travel)

If you are looking for an eSIM to stay connected while you travel around Kenya, then you have come to the right place.

I have spent a lot of time in Kenya, and believe me when I say you are in for a trip of a lifetime, so let’s find the best eSIM option.

At A Glance: Best eSim for Kenya

  • Best Kenya eSIM Airalo
  • Affordable Kenya eSIM AloSIM

You can buy a physical SIM card when you land at the airport, but it is a bit of a hassle and a Kenya eSIM is the way to go in my eyes. Below, I have reviewed the top eSIM Kenya plans of the leading global providers so that you can find the best eSIM for Kenya for your upcoming trip.

ESIM Product Comparison

travel sim kenya

Airalo is one of, and perhaps the best global eSIM network provider at the moment. They have been in the game for a while and their customer support, prices, coverage, plans, and connection speeds are all excellent.

Here are their Kenya eSIM plans provided through Nakuru Mobile:

  • 1GB/7-days for $9
  • 2GB/15-days for $16.50
  • 3GB/30-days for $23.50
  • 5GB/30-days for $36.50

The range of plans should cover both your data needs and trip length while in Kenya, plus the prices are pretty affordable per GB.

Plus, they make use of Airtel, the second-best provider in Kenya.

  • A range of plans to choose from
  • Affordable per GB
  • Reliable coverage
  • Good connection speeds
  • No unlimited data plans

travel sim kenya

AloSIM are a newer eSIM company that also offer some great options for Kenya. Their prices are very competitive with Airalo , so you can compare them directly to see which is cheaper.

Their Kenya eSIM prepaid data packages are:

  • 1 GB – $9.50
  • 2 GB – $16.50
  • 3 GB – $23.50
  • 5 GB – $36.50

So, their prices per GB are very reasonable for a country like Kenya. And just like Airalo, they are also using one of Kenya’s top mobile carriers – Airtel. So coverage should be decent.

  • Great prices per GB
  • Top connection speeds
  • Competes with Airalo
  • No unlimited data

travel sim kenya

Holalfy is another great eSim provider and is probably Airalo’s number-one competitor. You can buy every type of eSim from Holafly, from an international eSim, regional, and country-specific eSim.

The Holafly eSim for Kenya only offers one data plan which is a tad restricting but it will cover most trips to Kenya as it does last 15 days. Here it is:

  • 6GB/15-days/$44

This is a good price per GB and you will have enough data for a 2-week trip around Kenya.

  • Good coverage
  • Affordable pricing
  • Reliable connection speeds
  • Good customer service
  • Just one plan to choose from

travel sim kenya

SimCorner is an eSim provider from Australia and they offer excellent coverage, good connection speeds, and good value across all their eSims which cover most of the world.

SimCorner only had one eSim data plan for Kenya and here it is:

  • 6GB/15-days/$54 AUD – $35.92 USD

This is very similar to Holafly’s Kenya eSim but is way more affordable per GB.

  • Very affordable per GB
  • Works for short trips
  • Simple setup
  • Reliable coverage and connection speeds
  • Helpful customer support

travel sim kenya

Yesim is a reliable eSim provider offering solid coverage, speeds, and a range of plans for most countries. Here are their eSim data plans for Kenya:

  • 500MB/7-days/€9 – $9.84
  • 1GB/5-days/€27 – $14.22
  • 3GB/7-days/€45 – $36.10
  • 5GB/10-days/€70 – $56.88

Sadly, their prices per GB are way too expensive compared to the other providers we have looked at and the length of their eSims is very limiting.

  • A few plans to choose from
  • Solid coverage and data speeds
  • Easy to set up
  • Very expensive per GB
  • Short plans only

travel sim kenya

MobiMatter is not an eSim provider, it is more of an eSim reseller/comparison website which means you get a lot of choices and can find some great deals.

The Kenya eSims range from 1GB/7-days/$7.99 all the way to 20GB/30-days/$91.99 with 16 other data plans to choose from too. All the plans also cover multiple countries in Africa and the rest of the world.

If you are looking for the best eSim for Africa , MobiMatter is not a bad place to look. Their Kenya eSim plans are also affordable per GB and competitive.

  • Tons of eSims to choose from
  • Cover over 100+ countries
  • Great coverage
  • Reliable service
  • Unlimited data is not an option

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Kenya

The benefits of getting an eSim for Kenya for your mobile phone in Kenya are huge and it’s definitely the way to go in my eyes.

My favorite thing about eSims is how convenient they are! No more tedious trips to the store or waiting in long lines – you can easily purchase and activate your eSim online from the comfort of your own home.

Topping up your eSim is a breeze too – just hop online and you can do it in no time. Whereas you would have to go and buy a scratch card to top-up in Kenya.

One of the coolest things about eSims is that you’ll be connected right away as soon as you land in Kenya.

All you need to do is activate your eSim before your flight, and you’ll be good to go once you arrive. No more waiting around to find a local sim card or struggling to connect to airport wifi.

Using an eSim also means you can keep your home phone number active during your travels. This is great for staying connected with friends, and family, and keeping up with important alerts from your bank for money transfers and such.

And, in case you lose your phone or it gets stolen, there’s no need to worry about your eSim. Transferring it to a new device is easy as pie.

Say goodbye to the hassle of worrying about physical sim cards. With eSims, you won’t need to swap them out, so you can keep it safe and sound in your phone. No more frantic searches for a lost card!

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Kenya

The local mobile operators that offer eSims in Kenya include:

  • Airtel Kenya
  • Telkom Kenya

You can buy an eSim from one of these local mobile operators by going to their websites and purchasing the plan that suits you best.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Kenya

Not every mobile device comes equipped with an eSim card as it is rather new tech. An eSim, short for “embedded sim card,” and it is a sim card built right into a smartphone/tablet/watch – it’s not a virtual sim.

But don’t worry, most new smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches now come with eSim capabilities. Here are just a few examples of devices that offer this feature:

  • iPhone XS, 12, 11, SE (2nd generation), and newer models
  • Samsung Galaxy S21, S20, Note 20, and newer models
  • Google Pixel 5, 4, 3a, and newer models
  • iPad Pro, iPad Air (3rd generation), and newer models
  • Apple Watch Series 6, SE, and newer models
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, Watch Active 2, and newer models
  • Huawei Watch 3 and newer models

If you’re unsure whether your device supports eSims, there’s an easy way to find out. Just dial *#06# and hit the call button. If an eSim identification number (EID) appears on your screen, then your device is compatible with eSims – it’s that simple!

So, if you’re in the market for an eSim, be sure to check if your device supports it. And if it doesn’t, you might consider upgrading to a newer model that does.

Data Needed When Traveling to Kenya

Knowing how much data you will need for your upcoming trip to Kenya is key to buying the right eSim plan.

The key to figuring out how much data you’ll need is to consider your usual daily usage. For most people, around 5 GB of data per week is enough to stay connected and share some cool pics and videos on social media of your safari or Kenya’s white sand beaches.

However, if you’re a fan of streaming Netflix, you might need closer to 15 GB per week to binge-watch your favorite shows.

Running out of data while you’re out exploring can really put a damper on your trip. So, it’s a good idea to check your device’s data usage report to get a better idea of your typical usage and how much you’ll need for your travels.

Luckily, there are many eSim data plans available in Kenya to match your needs. So, you can enjoy your trip without worrying about unexpectedly running out of data.

Just choose the plan that fits your usage and budget, activate it online, and you’re all set to stay connected while exploring Kenya.

Airalo eSIM FAQ

Kenya eSIM Airalo

The Best Kenya eSIMs

Stay connected while you travel with these  Kenya eSIM plans  from Airalo:

  • 1GB for 7 days
  • 2GB for 15 days
  • 3GB for 30 days
  • 5GB for 30 days

Additional information:

  • Top-up available
  • Validity begins when connected to any supported network
  • No eKYC check required

How to Choose a Kenya eSIM

Here are a few considerations to help you select a Kenya eSIM:

  • Where are you traveling? A Kenya eSIM will keep you connected within the country. If your trip includes other countries and regions, consider a  regional  or  global eSIM  instead.
  • How long will you be away? Each Airalo eSIM plan has a validity period that tells you how long you can use it (e.g., 7 days, 15 days, 30 days). If you extend your trip, you can top up or purchase another eSIM to stay connected.
  • How much data do you need? Airalo eSIMs also come with a set amount of data (e.g., 1GB, 3GB, 5GB). The amount you need will depend on how you use your smartphone when you travel. 1GB is generally enough for you to check emails, scroll social media, and browse the internet for 20-30 minutes a day over a month.

Is Your Device eSIM-Compatible?

Before you purchase a Kenya   eSIM, you'll want to  ensure your phone supports eSIM technology . To use an eSIM, your phone must be:

  • Carrier-unlocked. Your device can't be tied to a contract with a mobile carrier. If you purchased your phone outright, it's likely unlocked. If you aren't sure, we recommend contacting your carrier to double-check.
  • eSIM-compatible. Most smartphones manufactured since 2018 are eSIM-compatible, but this can vary depending on your location and provider. You can review our list of  eSIM-compatible devices  to see if your phone has eSIM capability.

How to Buy and Install a Kenya eSIM

If your device is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible, you're all set to buy and install a Kenya   eSIM! Follow these steps to set up your eSIM.

Step 1: Buy an eSIM

Visit the  Airalo website  or download the Airalo app (available on  iOS  and  Android ) and pick a  Kenya eSIM  for your trip. As a refresher, here are a few things to consider:

  • Data:  The amount of data that comes with the eSIM (e.g., 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, etc.).
  • Validity Period: How long you can use the eSIM (e.g., 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc.).
  • Price: The value of the eSIM package (e.g., $5, $10, $15, etc.).
  • Location: Where you can use the eSIM (e.g., a single country, a region, or globally).

Step 2: Install Your eSIM

There are three ways to install an Airalo eSIM — directly, manually, and with a QR code. Before installing your eSIM, make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection (we don't want you getting stuck mid-installation!).

Here's how to start the eSIM installation using each method:

  • Direct : Follow the prompts to install the eSIM right from the Airalo app.
  • QR Code : Scan a QR code to start the installation process.
  • Manual : Enter the eSIM information manually in your device settings.

And, here's how to install an eSIM based on your phone type:

  • iOS/iPhone eSIM guide
  • Android eSIM guide
  • Samsung Galaxy S20/S21 eSIM guide
  • Google Pixel eSIM guide
  • Huawei eSIM guide

During the installation, you'll get a prompt to label your eSIM line. We recommend choosing a label that will make it easy to identify the eSIM when you travel (e.g., Kenya eSIM).

Step 3: Activate Your eSIM

When your eSIM activates will depend on its activation policy (you can find this in your eSIM's "Additional Information" section). The activation policy tells you when your eSIM's validity period begins. Some will activate immediately upon installation, while others will activate when you connect to a supported network at your destination.

If your Kenya eSIM activates immediately, it's best to wait until right before you travel to install it. If it activates when you connect to a mobile network in Kenya, you can install it right away.

Step 4: Connect to a Local Network

When you arrive in Kenya, you can turn on your eSIM line to connect to a network and get online.

Here's how to turn on your eSIM on iOS:

  • Go to  Settings .
  • Tap  Cellular  or  Mobile .
  • Tap your eSIM line.
  • Toggle on  Turn On This Line .
  • Toggle on  Data Roaming .
  • Tap Network Selection and select a supported network (you can find a list of networks in the eSIM's Additional Information section).

And on Android:

  • Tap  Network & Internet .
  • Tap  Mobile Network .
  • Turn on your eSIM.
  • Turn on  Mobile Data .
  • Turn on  Data Roaming .
  • Select a supported network (you can find a list of networks in the eSIM's Additional Information section).

Benefits of Using an Airalo eSIM

Some of the benefits of using an Airalo eSIM include the following:

  • There are no roaming fees.  Airalo eSIM plans are prepaid. You'll only pay for the data you purchase upfront or top-up along the way.
  • You aren't tied to a specific carrier.  You can choose the eSIM data plan that best suits your needs and easily switch plans as you travel.
  • You can connect like a local.  We work with local providers to ensure you get the best prices and service during your trip.
  • Contact us 24/7.  Our support team is available 24/7, so you can get the assistance you need no matter what time zone you're in.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is an embedded SIM card. Unlike a physical SIM, it's built into your device and works 100% digitally. Rather than purchase a physical SIM card, you can download an eSIM and instantly connect to a local network.

What does an Airalo eSIM package include?

Your Airalo package includes preloaded data (e.g., 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, etc.) valid for a specific time period (e.g., seven days, 14 days, 30 days, etc.). If your data runs out or your validity period expires, you can top up your eSIM or download another package right from the Airalo app.

What can I do with my Airalo eSIM?

You can do the same things with an Airalo eSIM as you would a traditional SIM:

  • Connect to a mobile network.
  • Browse the internet.
  • Use your favorite apps.
  • Call and text (if included in your eSIM plan).
  • Use internet-based call and messaging apps (like Whatsapp).

Can I use my SIM card at the same time?

You sure can! Most devices will allow you to use multiple SIMs and/or eSIMs simultaneously. You can use your home network SIM for talk and text, and your eSIM for data.

Why is an eSIM plan better than roaming?

An Airalo eSIM gives you the best local rates to connect to a mobile network. That means you can use data like a local rather than pay high roaming fees from your home provider.

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the Holafly eSIM.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at [email protected] or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.

What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Kenya?

You can choose 5 days unlimited data, 7 days unlimited data, 10 days unlimited data, 15 days unlimited data, 20 days unlimited data and 30 days unlimited data. You can contact us at any time if you’re not sure which plan is best for you.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

No, the Kenya eSIM does not allow you to share data or use a hotspot with other devices.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. Once the refund is approved, you will receive the money on to the same account with which you made the payment. This process can take between 5 to 10 business days. For more details, terms and conditions, we invite you to read our Refund Policy .

To which mobile network will I connect at my destination?

Your eSIM will connect to all the local phone networks that Holafly partners up with. You can review them in the Technical Specs tab.

Comparison of eSIMs for a trip to Kenya

When making a comparison between different eSIM brands , we need to consider all the features that will help us determine if the card fits our travel needs. We present this summary table with all the essential information about Holafly, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Simoptions and Nomad to help you choose. We’ll go into more detail on each eSIM brand below so you won’t miss any of the information.

1. Holafly, eSIM for Kenya with unlimited data and customer support in English

Holafly  is the leading eSIM card company, offering unlimited data plans . In addition, the brand offers a 24-hour customer support service in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese that responds in less than a minute via chat or WhatsApp, and is currently the best rated company on Trustpilot with a score of 4.7.

On the website of   Holafly  you can find 6 data unlimited data plans for Kenya with the price starting at 27€.

There are two options for installing the Holafly eSIM. The first is scanning the QR code that you will receive by email once you have completed the purchase. And the other is the manual installation that you can do without a computer; you only have to type a code in the settings of your mobile . This code will be sent to your email and you can also consult it in the Holafly App, which is very convenient for controlling the duration of the data plan.

eSIM Kenya

After testing Holafly’s eSIM cards we can say that they are one of the most expensive options on the market, but in the end they are cost-effective as all their plans have unlimited data and you won’t need to top up at any time during your trip. Here we leave you with this ranking where we evaluate from 1 to 5 all the features of the Holafly eSIM cards for Kenya based on our experience.

In this post you can read about our experience with Holafly eSIM cards and some user reviews: Our thoughts on Holafly eSIM .

2. SimOptions, an eSIM marketplace

SimOptions is an eSIM card company that compares different data plans offered by different local mobile phone companies. The brand, with offices in Paris, Thailand and Kenya, offers data plans for eSIM cards in more than 160 countries and they also have regional and global plans.

For Kenya you’ll find 2 data plans of 14 and 15 days with data limits of 6GB or 10GB with the price of $ 39,9 .

The main drawback of SimOptions is that it offers a website is a bit chaotic and the data plans, being from different brands , propose features that vary a lot; not only the price, speed or duration, but also the technical support, the possibility to recharge or share data. This will make you have to pay a lot of attention to look at each brand and will make it harder for you to make a decision.

Our personal experience is that with SimOptions cards you can waste a lot of time comparing options. In addition, the price is high, you can only pay in dollars and they don’t give you the guarantee of good technical support. Here we leave you this ranking where we rate SimOptions eSIM cards from 1 to 5 and in this post you can read about our opinion and that of other customers about the brand: Our opinion about SimOptions: is it worth it?

3. Airalo, the cheapest eSIM brand for travel to Kenya

Airalo is along with Holafly one of the world’s best-known brands for buying an international travel eSIM. This company was founded in Singapore in 2019 by Turkish entrepreneurs Abraham Burak and Ahmet Bahadir Özdemir. It was also one of the first to offer such services, and has a wide coverage of countries where they offer eSIM cards.

Airalo’s eSIM card data plans for Kenya have a duration of 7, 15 and 30 days, with prices ranging from $9 to $36,5. Airalo is considered one of the cheapest brands on the market , however, its technical service leaves much to be desired and takes a long time to respond. Their data plans have very limited gigabytes and you are likely to run out of data in the middle of your journey and have to top up , which means that in the end the costs will increase and the cheap will be expensive.

Although Airalo is cheap and offers a wide range of eSIM cards, its technical service leaves a lot to be desired. On Trustpilot you can see user reviews and ratings. Airalo has one of the lowest ratings with 2.6 . Here you have the ranking of each aspect of Airalo and in this post you can also read about our opinion of the brand: Our opinion of Airalo: is it worth it?

4. Maya Mobile, data packages for up to one month

For Kenya, Maya Mobile offers four eSIM offers for 5, 10, 15 and 30 days in Kenya . The price of the data packages varies according to the gigabytes. You can choose between 4 packages of 1GB, 3GB, 5GB and 10GB, with prices ranging from 39€ to 331€.

Just like Holafly, Maya Mobile is characterised by the speed and simplicity of the sign-up process and installation. It will also be done through a QR code that arrives in the mail. In addition, they have a 100% refund policy of the purchase in the event that the data does not work, which is not usually the case as they have at least two data providers in each country where they offer their services.

As you can see, the price is quite high compared to the other maras. On Trustpilot you can see that the brand has an average score of 4.7 , but there are hardly any reviews. Here we leave you this table with the score for each of the features of their eSIM cards.

Conclusion on which is the best eSIM for Kenya

When planning a trip to Kenya, it is important to know what type of eSIM and data plan you will need for the amount of days and usage you will need. Below you can find a detailed comparison of our experience and which eSIM card is best for a trip to Kenya .

When we travel we don’t want to run out of data in the middle of our holiday, so eSIM cards with unlimited data are the best option . In this case, the only brand that offers unlimited eSIM data is Holafly .

Buy internet for your trip to Kenya from anywhere in the world

To get a better idea of how much each application consumes and to be able to make a more realistic estimate of how much internet you will need, below is a table with the consumption of each application.

The installation process for eSIM cards is always simple and quick , although it is true that some companies make it easier than others. The first thing you will have to do is check if your mobile is compatible with the brand’s eSIM . Generally, this information can be checked on each provider’s website.

You can also install the eSIM by scanning a QR code that you will receive by email as soon as you have completed the purchase with Holafly o Maya Mobile.

ESIM card installation process for Kenya

On the other hand, it is very important to take into account the technical service , which will help you in the installation process and solve any doubt or problem. Most brands such as Maya Mobile or Airalo have a chat bot that takes a long time to respond and only does so in English. In the case of SimOptions, technical support will depend on the brand of eSIM card you have chosen. In this regard Holafly’s technical support is the best as they respond in less than 1 minute in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese via web chat or WhatsApp, where a conversation is automatically opened after purchase.

One of the most important aspects is price. The cheapest brands are Sim Options and Airalo ; however, their data plans are very limited and you’re likely to run out and have to pay for the top-up again . That is why it is sometimes advisable to pay a little more and get an eSIM card with unlimited data like Holafly’s for peace of mind and no need to worry about running out of data.

All in all, Holafly eSIM cards are the best option for traveling to Kenya because of their affordable plan and multilingual technical support that responds in less than a minute. Their plans are also really flexible and suit all types of travel. With Holafly you’ll never run out of data on your trip.

Other options for internet in Kenya

Besides eSIM cards, which tend to be the best option for internet in Kenya , there are other options for enjoying the internet in your destination country. For the time being, here is a table of all the reasons why we prefer to use eSIM cards when travelling rather than other options.

1. SIM cards

SIM cards are one of the most widespread options today, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best option, as shown below they have a number of drawbacks.

In Kenya there are many brands offering SIM cards, such as ThingsMobile Or Kes .

SIM cards can be purchased online before you start your trip, at the airport or in official shops in the shopping areas of your destination country.

The advantage of SIM cards is that they also include calls and SMS, but as you may know, the installation process requires removing your regular SIM, so you may risk losing it. Also, SIM cards have limited data, and can run out before their time is up.

2. Rent a Pocket WiFi

Another alternative for connecting to the internet in Kenya is to rent a Pocket WiFi, i.e. a portable router with which you can access the internet wherever you go.

Some brands that rent these routers in Kenya are AirTel Kenya or Juamia Kenya , although the prices they offer are quite high.

This option is interesting when we only need internet in a very specific space, for long periods of time or when we are travelling with more people, as everyone can benefit from the connection and share the costs.

3. Search for free WiFi networks in Kenya

As you can imagine, this is the cheapest option. However, as you may already know, it is also the most frustrating option in most cases. Slow connection, time limit or endless forms that promise WIFI after giving all your details.

This is an option that should be used with caution for security reasons. Public WiFi hotspots are very vulnerable to hacking or cyber-attacks, so your private data could be affected. See recommends that you spend as little time as possible connected, use it for one-off consultations and do not expose personal data.

Here are some places where you can find WiFi on your trip in Kenya if you need it: airports, museums, the metro, parks, cafes, restaurants and hotels. There are also APPs that tell you where to find WiFi hotspots, as well as Facebook, which also offers this service.

4. Activate roaming for Kenya

One of the options that is increasingly losing popularity due to its high costs is roaming, also known as data roaming. It is the simplest option as you can receive calls and connect to the internet without having to install anything or change your phone number. However, it is not the most widely used option because of the high bills. A gigabyte can cost up to 25€ .

Before embarking on a trip, it is advisable to ask your carrier about the cost of roaming so that you can compare with other services such as eSIM cards. In Spain some of the companies that offer roaming in Kenya are Orange, Yoigo, Jazztel, Movistar or Vodafone.

If you decide to use another option, remember to turn off data roaming on your mobile phones or change the main line if you use an eSIM.

Internet in Kenya

Frequently asked questions about having internet in Kenya

Most models of common brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei or Google are compatible as long as they are recent models. Several iPads are also compatible. However, it is best to consult the website of each provider, where they will tell you which models are compatible.

eSIM cards allow you to have internet on your mobile phone when you travel abroad without having to remove your usual SIM card, as is the case with SIM cards. This is possible thanks to a chip that is built into the latest generation of mobile phones. The purchase of the eSIM data plan can be done through the website or the App of some brands. Choose your destination, the duration and the gigabytes of the data plan and pay securely.

Once you have verified that your mobile phone is compatible with the product and chosen the data plan that best suits your needs, go to the mobile data settings on your smartphone and select “add data plan”. The camera will then open, so you can scan the QR code that you will have received in the mail after the purchase. The installation and activation of your card will then begin. This process must be carried out with an internet connection, which is why it is recommended that you do it before setting off on your trip or as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

SIM cards can be purchased in physical shops or online, with delivery times ranging from 48 to 72 hours. There are also companies that offer same-day express delivery.

Most carriers offer packages with data caps. Holafly , unlike the others, offers a wide variety of unlimited data packages.

Data cards are activated as soon as they are installed in the country of origin, i.e. when the SIM card is inserted or the QR code is scanned.

Data packages usually last for weeks or months, however, there are providers such as Holafly that offer more flexible packages between 5 days and 3 months.

Unlimited data plans do not normally allow data sharing, but plans with a specific number of GBs included do.

The data on unlimited plans is really unlimited. Please note, however, that local mobile operators may temporarily reduce the speed if you use applications such as Netflix or YouTube very intensively. These limits are more intended to avoid network saturation by a few users.

Holafly is a Spanish company launched in 2018 that you can trust, it has been tested by more than 400,000 customers, travel blogs and Youtubers. Holafly has been marketing eSIMs since 2019.

Holafly has over 10,000 positive experiences posted on Trustpilot, with an “Excellent” rating and 4.7 average score.

SIM Options has both positive and negative reviews, and a lower average Trustpilot rating than Holafly at 4.4. SIM Options is a Hong Kong based company.

Maya is owned by a US company, Maya Virtual Inc. Reviews of Maya on Truspilot are good, with an average rating of 4.7.

Airalo reviews on Truspilot are good, with an average score of 2.6.

How to Get a Safaricom eSIM in Kenya

Airtel eSim Card

The recently launched iPhone 14 series of devices won’t support the physical SIM card that’s been part of the mobile industry since the beginning. This change affects the US for now but like we saw with the headphone jack, it is only a matter of time before the SIM Card is antiquated.

So how will the iPhone 14 users in the US connect their flashy new devices to the mobile networks? Simple, by using eSIMs. It looks like the era of the eSIM is upon us and for those of us outside the US, it is time to start looking at how these will be acquired in our specific markets.

  • How to Get an eSIM From MTN Nigeria
  • What is eSIM (Embedded SIM) and why it replaces the physical SIM Card?
  • SIM card formats: Mini-SIM vs Micro-SIM vs Nano-SIM vs Embedded-SIM/eSIM

In Kenya, eSIMs are still relatively new and only a few carriers do support this next-generation subscriber identification method and in this post, we talk you through how to get one on Safaricom. The other carrier that supports eSIM in Kenya is Faiba but these guys have bigger issues like service reliability and coverage, let alone eSIM adoption.

What do You Need?

Like the purchase of any SIM Card in Kenya, you will need to present yourself to the Safaricom Shop or to an accredited Safaricom Sales agent in person.

You will need to bring with you your national identification card, or a valid Passport to facilitate in proper identification.

This applies to both new subscribers looking to purchase an eSIM from Safaricom, or existing customers looking to swap their physical SIM Cards for these virtual embedded SIMs.

An eSIM from Safaricom will cost you KES 150 . This is if you’re looking to do a SIM Swap from your physical SIM Card to eSIM. For an eSIM with a new phone number, you will need to pay KES 250 .

Safaricom is a trailblazer in the telecom space, not just in Kenya but in the region as well. They’re the first to offer this service and while we understand that legislation has made the acquisition of SIM Cards pretty tedious, there should and needs to be a way to apply for and get a Safaricom eSIM online.

FAQ about eSIM in Kenya

If you have any questions about the new eSIMs for your trip to Kenya, don’t worry because we will answer the most frequently asked questions that travelers usually have regarding their eSIM in Kenya.

It’s not necessary to present a passport to get this product. But some providers do require your address to give you the eSIM. Therefore, to buy this product, you can show that you have a temporary residence address in Kenya, such as a previously booked hotel.

This will depend on the features of the eSIM that you bought from your provider. You can do that with certain providers only. In the case of eSIM Kenya from Holafly, you can share data from your cell phone.

The activation process will depend on the operating system of your smartphone. You must scan the QR code sent to your email after buying the eSIM and once you do this, you must choose it as the default means of cellular data, activate data, and roaming and your virtual SIM should now work.

There are two aspects that you must consider. The first is the amount of data you use frequently. The second is the days you will stay in Kenya. Based on this information, you will be able to choose the best SIM card for your trip. This way you won’t run out of data, and your data won’t lose validity during your trip to Kenya.

During your trip to Kenya, you will have different options to connect to the internet. However, most of these alternatives are expensive and very inconvenient. Among these alternatives, you find the roaming service and Pocket WiFi.
