1992 (i believe) Trek 1400

  • Add to quote

I am currently looking at a Trek 1400 for sale on craigslist. From what I can tell the bike looks to be in good shape. 14 speeds, down tube shifters, 105, etc. I believe that the bike is a 1992 model after checking vintage-trek.com. Seller is asking $320. Any problems I should be aware of? Do you think $320 is a fair price or too high for a 20 year old bicycle? Any info/advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I had a 1990 Trek 1200, same frame as the 1400 but with a Cr-Mo fork instead of the aluminum one found in the 1400. If I recall correctly, the 105 group in the1992 model was the one with the light gray finish (mine was the previous dark metal blue version). FYI, I remember I paid $620 for it back in 1990 and the 1400 (the 1990 model) retailed for about $700-750. My team's main sponsor back then was the local Trek distributor so we were ALL on Treks back then and knew the models by heart. But to more directly answer your question...$320?? I think it's high.

Thanks for the input. To add some more info the bike is red with white decals. Also (if im being to forward let me know) is there a specific price range that this particular bike should fall in? If I'm going to try and negotiate I like to go in with all the ammo I can. Thanks.

The white and red combo came in two years, the main difference is the font used in the decals. They became more squarish after 1990. IIRC the 1991 was pearl white with purple decals just like the 2000 frameset. I just looked at a post from 2008 in bikeforums where someone was asking for advice on a used 1400 and back THEN people were saying $300 was too expensive. You be the judge.

Trek's bonded frames from this era didn't have the best bonding technology - the joints wiggle apart too often on these older frames. I'd keep looking, or buy it for less than $200 and hope the low cost offsets any future hassles.

Actually, this was more common on older Specialized Allez Epics and frames from other vendors such as Vitus. Galvanic corrosion anyone? As I mentioned before, my team used to be sponsored by the local Trek distributor (from '88-91)so we were VERY familiar with them. Just to give you an idea, at one point we had about 30 JUNIOR riders on Trek frames(and we beat the crap out of those frames) ranging from the 1000,1200,1400,1500,2000 and 2300, as well as the Cr-Mo 660 (which was SWEET). We only had one aluminum frame that separated at the rear dropout/chainstay junction (it was a 1987 Trek 1500 IIRC). Of the rest, I think a total of 8-9 were returned for warranty replacement and they were all (except the previously mentioned one) due to the shifter bosses separating from the frame, not the tubes at the joints. Initially, Trek just sent us new replacement frames but I remember for the last couple of frames, they were repaired. I also recall that , at the time, Trek had a special program for distributors/dealers where they would allow you to custom paint frames . Our coach was able to get a really nice 660 painted by Trek in custom colors back in 1990. It was a quite bright almost neon yellow frame with electric blue decals. Man , that was one sweet bike. Granted, if you were to get the bike now, I suspect those joints would exhibit some of those failures due to the time that has passed since they were made.

My brother and B-I-L both rode Trek 1200's from that era (1990, and 1994), both with the RX100 (and both 62cm). They were stiffer and lighter than my DiamondBack "Expert" 4130 steel framed bike (58cm, also with RX100). The wheels they came with were not great, though. Both of them broke a lot of spokes on their rear wheel, and B-I-L cracked a rim... I liked their bikes, Both put a ton of miles on them, and never had any frame issues, but I would not pay $320 for both of them these days... Good bike, but over priced... (IMHO)

lots of good info here. thanks for the help

trek 1400 aluminium

I wouldn't pay over $250 for it... and that's in excellent condition. You can probably buy a 1994 model with STI shifters for around $300. I've heard a lot about the bonded aluminum frames not being that great, but I've owned a 1989 and a 1994 model before and they were excellent bikes that I put tons of miles on. That blue on the '89 model was just downright gorgeous IMO, and it had an aluminum fork- not a cromoly one. It was an option from Trek and the fork was brushed aluminum. I've only seen three others like it- meaning most owners probably decided to stay with the cromoly fork.

great valve, very smooth and a great climber. and a good looking bike.

saddle is the worst thing ever. bin it an buy something you can sit on and enjoy your bike.

trek 1400 is a really good bike for the money.iv been raiding it for six months I have put down about 2000 miles with out any problems except for the saddle. a piece of crap.talk about numb nuts,I tried the saddle in every position but nothing worked, so I changed it for a specialized Alias last week seems ok so far no numb nuts. yet.I haven't road for seven years due to young family. I used to ride MBK with colombus tubing and all 105. technology has really moved on. the trek 1400 is a fantasic,an fast bike. very comfortable when you change you saddle. great on hills. over all well worth the money great value an a great bike.

MBK with all 105. dated now but a monster in its day.

strong frame, excellent fit and finish- better than most modern aluminum frames, 105 components- not the best but can't go wrong with proven components, handles very well

was a little stiff on long rides

This bike was actually a 1990 model. It never left me stranded and was always up for the task. The only things that I did to it during my time with my 1400 is upgrade from downtube to STI shifters and switched to 9 speed with Performance Forte Titan wheels (read my comments on those wheels that section) Kudos to Trek for making such a well-made frame. Newer aluminum models may be lighter, but the attention to detail is better on this one. It was one of the best bikes that I've ever owned. Unfortunately it was totalled when my wife drove into our garage with my bike on the roof of my Honda CR-V. There was a crack in the frame that was unrepairable and was not under warranty. Trek went out of their way in trying to rectify this problem buit the bike was too old and it was before the started the lifetime warranty on their bikes. The rep for Trek still went out of his way to help me over a five week span, calling me every other day to update me on the status of my claim. I was so impressed that I bought a 5200 Trek after that. If you find a Trek 1400 or 1500 (Trek still makes the 1500), you won't regret it. I gave it a 4 out of 5 because they don't make the 1400 anymore.

trek 1400 aluminium

Our most advanced aluminum ever

Aluminum frames and components have been commonplace throughout the cycling industry for much of its history, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t extraordinary opportunities for advancement and perfection. With Alpha Aluminum, Trek has applied the most sophisticated concepts of metallurgy and stretched them to the absolute maximum—building frames that are strong, light, and provide a ride quality that rivals that of many of their carbon counterparts.

Series 300 Alpha Aluminum: Aluminum Advanced

A lighter, more compliant ride

Over the years, aluminum frames have earned a reputation as being overly stiff and providing poor ride quality compared to their carbon brethren. The engineers at Trek have made it their mission to challenge this assumption, using methods that allow the material to retain its best characteristics—its lightness and strength—while simultaneously improving ride quality. Many cyclists enjoy the responsiveness that comes with stiffer aluminum frames. Unfortunately, what starts out as a snappy, fun ride can quickly become uncomfortable and fatiguing on long or rough outings, making aluminum a poor choice for endurance and adventure-minded riders. Alpha Aluminum was developed to build more compliant frames that retain the acceleration and affordability that have always made aluminum popular. By taking a comprehensive approach to frame design and construction, Trek is able to fine-tune frames to be stiff where necessary and compliant where possible. The result is a more enjoyable ride that expands the opportunities for you to comfortably enjoy your aluminum frame. With Alpha Aluminum you won’t have to think twice about hitting the gravel or signing up for a multiple-day tour. More than ever, an aluminum bike is the only bike you’ll need for recreation, touring, training, and competition.

From blueprint to reality

Metallic materials can’t be molded like composites. Creating the unique shapes that make for great ride characteristics requires forming, or an actual manipulation of the tube material to take on a desired shape. Holding a sincere belief that materials as difficult to work with as aluminum can in fact be manipulated into something exceptional, Trek has created unique Alpha Aluminum frame designs that are so much more than tubes of aluminum welded together. We go a step further in our willingness to experiment, and the difference is noticeable in performance, comfort, and aesthetics. By stretching aluminum alloy to its absolute capacity, Trek engineers are able to achieve a two-fold benefit: reduced weight and reduced stiffness in key areas that produce a harsh ride quality.

What is hydroforming?

Proven effective in the world of high-end performance automobiles, hydroforming is the process of injecting fluid into a cylindrical frame tube to manipulate it into a more beneficial shape. Hydroforming allows Trek engineers to bring complex aluminum frame designs, especially those with advanced aerodynamic properties, from the drawing board to the production line. Ask any engineer, and they’ll tell you the quintessential engineering shape is a circle. Alloy frame tubes begin as cylinders because this shape allows for an equal load distribution and stiffness that is uniform throughout the tube. Because circular shapes lack in aerodynamic properties, however, Trek employs hydroforming to manipulate the aluminum alloy tubes into performance shapes that retain strength while also adding to the frame’s aerodynamic properties and ride quality.

Seamless transitions

Trek’s advanced Alpha Aluminum frames feature Invisible Weld Technology, a revolutionary welding process that decreases weight and increases structural integrity, while also delivering finely tuned welds that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are strong. Let’s be honest: Looks matter. A premium road bike requires clean, esteemed aesthetics that are not blemished by sloppy, highly visible weld material at every joint. Invisible Weld Technology produces welds that are just that—invisible. By forming pressurized tube shapes that fit together perfectly, Trek’s engineers make it easier not only to weld tubes into frames, but dramatically reduce the amount of weld material required to do so. Less weld material allows for larger continuous surface areas on the frame, which increases strength and durability. Using less weld material also allows production engineers to control every gram of material that goes into the bike, which results in frames that are lighter than many carbon fiber alternatives. Trek’s lightweight, ultra-strong Alpha Aluminum frames with Invisible Weld Technology disrupt the notion that an aluminum bike can’t compete in ride quality or weight with a carbon bike.

A new era for aluminum

The amazing innovations of Alpha Aluminum have produced bikes that stand up against the highest performing road machines made of composite materials. Trek’s engineers have shown this material may never be obsolete, but that a willingness to experiment can lead to amazing results. Feel the difference of our most advanced aluminum ever today.

The second largest aluminum plant in the world

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Business , Economics , Photos

Aluminum appeared in our lives only about century and a half ago, but in that short time it managed to go from being a decorative metal to the material, which allows us to move faster, to live in warmth and comfort, and enjoy all the benefits of modern civilization.

At the moment, the leader of the global aluminum industry is the Russian company RUSAL which accounts for about 12.5% of global production of aluminum that ensures the production facilities to produce 3.9 million tons of aluminum per year. Krasnoyarsk aluminum plant is owned by RUSAL. Photos by dedmaxopka

Krasnoyarsk aluminum plant, RUSAL, Russia photo 1

It is the second largest aluminum producer in the world. Production capacity of the plant is 1 million tons of aluminum per year (about 24% of Russia’s and 2.4% of global production of aluminum).

Krasnoyarsk aluminum plant, RUSAL, Russia photo 2

Aluminum production is extremely energy intensive. Therefore aluminum plants are built mainly in the regions where there is free access to powerful sources of energy.

In our case, this source is Krasnoyarsk hydro power plant (6,000 MW). Krasnoyarsk aluminum plant consumes about 70% of the total volume of electricity produced.

I think Trek started offering the aluminum 1400 around 1989. The older ones will have a six- or seven-speed cog on the back and downtube shifters ...

  4. 1992 (i believe) Trek 1400

I had a 1990 Trek 1200, same frame as the 1400 but with a Cr-Mo fork instead of the aluminum one found in the 1400. If I recall correctly, the 105 group in the1992 model was the one with the light gray finish (mine was the previous dark metal blue version).
