First Look: 2018 Trek Session

All new carbon framesets for both 27.5 and 29 inch wheels for Trek's downhill race bike

Headshot of matt phillips

Trek has formally unveiled the details of their latest production downhill bike, the Session. Publicly tested by Trek’s professional race team for months, the new bike is a refinement of an already-successful race platform, and adds a 29er option alongside the new 27.5”-wheeled Session models.

The 210mm-rear-travel Session with 27.5-inch wheels receives a host of refinements. One of the most visible changes is the elimination of Trek’s Full Floater design–in which both upper and lower shock-attachment points moved to a more traditional design with fixed lower mount.

Trek Session 27.5 shock mounting

Now, however, Trek’s documents state that shock technology has improved enough that Full Floater’s additional tuning control isn’t required to achieve the desired suspension characteristics. According to the Session’s launch materials, removing Full Floater allowed Trek’s engineers to build a stronger, lighter, and stiffer frame. Trek’s testing shows the new Session is 19 percent stiffer at the bottom bracket, 10 percent stiffer at the head tube, and full frame stiffness jumps 11 percent.

Trek Session ABP

The other major suspension change was forgoing a coil-spring shock and adopting FOX’s Float X2 air shock as the Session’s stock shock (the Session remains coil-shock friendly, however). The Session’s press materials state that Trek’s suspension team worked with FOX to redesign the X2’s internals. Among the updates are “progressive instead of digressive valves and enhanced spring characteristics.” Claimed benefits are “a livelier ride with more control and more support,” and “suspension is also more responsive at the beginning of the stroke, allowing the bike to respond to smaller bumps, so it tracks the ground better and improves grip.”

Acting on the request of its professional racers—primarily Dan, Gee, and Rachel Atherton—Trek’s product development team stretched each frame size’s reach about 20mm. Bottom bracket drop was increased 10mm as well.

Trek Session Top Tube

Chainstay length was not changed—it’s still 445mm—which, combined with the longer front center and slacker head angle, results in a longer wheelbase for every size (a medium Session 27.5 has a 1,236mm wheelbase).

However, the new Session has the same head tube length on every size (115mm), and short seat tubes (425mm on the small, up to 456mm on the extra large), so riders can select a size based on their preferred reach/wheelbase and bike feel: shorter for more maneuverable, longer for more stable.

RELATED: First Look: 2017 Trek Remedy and Fuel EX

The 27.5” Session’s head angle sits at 63 degrees (0.6 degrees slacker than the outgoing Session), but Trek includes offset headset cups that allow the head angle to be increased or decreased by an additional degree. While adjustable-angle headset cups appear to be a simpler solution, in an email to Bicycling , Travis Ott, Trek’s mountain bike brand manager, said that “Adjustable headset cups were tried on the Session, but the rigors of the sport were too much for them so we’ve gone to a fixed angle headset cup now that’s a more robust solution.”

Trek Session Mino Link

Futher geometry tuning is provided by Trek’s MinoLink, which is also found on the company’s Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash. Flipping a chip in the Session’s upper stays alters the head tube angle by plus or minus half a degree, and changes bottom bracket height plus or minus eight millimeters.

The new 27.5” wheeled Session will be offered as a carbon frameset ($4,000, available in August), and as a complete bike with team build ($8,000, available in September). Parts highlights on the Session 9.9 27.5 RSL include a FOX Factory 40 fork with air-spring; DT-Swiss FR1950 wheels, Bontrager G4 tires; Shimano Saint brakes, crank, shifter and rear derailleur with Ultegra 11-25 10-speed cassette; and Bontrager post, saddle, direct-mount stem, grips, and carbon handlebar.

The updates described above do not apply to the aluminum Session frame and complete bike, which carry forward largely unchanged.

While the new 27.5” Session is noteworthy, it’s the new Session 29 frameset that is sure to get the most tongues wagging.

Trek Session 29

For many good reasons, downhill race bikes have stuck with smaller wheels. Chief among those reasons: smaller wheels are stronger and stiffer. Smaller wheels are also lighter—contrary to popular belief, bike weight matters in downhill racing, too—and smaller-wheeled bikes usually feel more flickable, maneuverable, and like to accelerate faster. Plus it’s easier to build a stronger, lighter, and stiffer frame around a smaller-diameter wheelset.

If those very real reasons can be addressed and mitigated, then it’s game on for 29-inch wheels in DH. Because it doesn’t matter if the wheels are 27.5”, 29”, or 53.2”: downhill racing is racing, and the only thing that matters is the stopwatch. If the Session with 29” wheels carries riders to the finish line faster, that’s it: it’s faster and big wheels win.

Trek Session 29 angle

The 190mm-rear travel Session 29 will only be offered as a carbon frameset, and sells for $5,000: a price that includes a 203mm-travel FOX Factory 40 air sprung fork for 29” wheels. It will be available in October.

RELATED:  First Look: Trek Slash 29

Though there are obviously some dimensional differences between the Session for 27.5 and the Session for 29" wheels, the geometry is closer than you might guess. The 29” frame’s wheelbase and reach are about 10 millimeters longer, and the 29er’s head angles are about a degree slacker, but stack and standover numbers are almost identical. Both are offered in small, medium, large, and extra large frame sizes.

Trek Session 29 and 27.5

While DH racing is sexy, it’s a small niche. A tiny number of DH bikes are sold compared to the numbers of cross country, trail, and enduro bikes sold. So why should the average trail rider care about Trek’s new Session DH bikes? Because downhill racing and bikes are often used to test and develop new geometry and suspension ideas. Ideas that make their way into more mainstream bikes.

“We often test out new ideas and technologies on these bikes with our most demanding athletes, then these ideas eventually make their way to Fuel EX and Remedy riders,” said Ott. “A good example of this trickle down development involves … our 29-inch DH proto from 2009. That bike was invaluable to us as a learning tool. It helped us explore the challenges of DH 29ers at the time, but also a stated goal of that proto project was to take lessons learned and apply them to long travel 29ers. Ya know, the bikes like the Slash that are all the rage right now.”

Trek Session 29 2009 prototype

So what might trickle down from the new Session DH to a future Fuel EX, Remedy, or Slash? Ott offered one hint: “The new Session comes stock with a FOX X2 air shock, which is notable. We worked directly with FOX during development of their shock and our bike and the result is a pretty remarkable air shock that will inform long travel trail bikes in the future.”

A review worth reading if you are considering a 29er DH bike. The Trek Session 9.9 downhill bike has a couple interesting quirks but is without a doubt one of the best DH bikes we've ridden in. If you're a racer looking for pick up speed and drop seconds, check this bike out!

Trek Session 9.9 29

Words by Drew Rohde | Action Photos by Trevor Lyden

You’d never guess it by looking at the Trek Session 29’s meticulously clean lines or attention to detail, but Trek created this bike knowing full well that sales numbers would pale in comparison. Downhill bikes cater to an increasingly small percentage of riders, and 29-inch wheeled DH bikes are going to segment that group into an even smaller section. If you compare Session sales to Fuel, Remedy and Slash models, the world-renowned Session looks more like an experiment in marketing than good business. Despite the unlikely return on R&D, design time and production mold dollars, Trek forged ahead creating one of the most beautiful, downhill bikes I’ve ever seen. After ogling over a pre-production Session 9.9 29 at Crankworx Whistler, I was anxious to get a long-term tester to see if the love affair would last once things got down and dirty.

In an effort to remain open minded, I try to not study the numbers on our test bikes before I write reviews. I’ll be totally honest, I either didn’t know or totally forgot that the Session 9.9 29er had 190mm of travel. Regardless of my newfound knowledge, the bike handled everything I threw at it thanks to the Fox Factory Fit 40 RC2 fork and Fox Factory Float X2 shock. Oh yeah, and the 29” wheels.

Trek equips the Session 29 with all of their standard features you’ve come to know over the years. The Session 9.9 is their top of the line model, and the frame is built using Trek’s OCLV (Optimum Compaction Low Void) carbon process that has been evolving since 1991. A magnesium Evo Link houses the adjustable Mino Link chip – an easily adjustable piece of hardware that changes the head tube angle and BB height.

Frame features also include an integrated frame protector, Control Freak cable routing, Carbon Armor, ABP (Active Braking Pivot) 4-link suspension design and adjustable fixed-angle headset cups.

The Session 9.9 29er is race-ready and boasts a 7-speed Shimano Saint drivetrain and Shimano Saint brakes. A particular highlight I enjoy is the very sexy MRP G4 carbon chainguide. Rolling stock on the Trek Session 9.9 29 comes in the form of Bontrager Line DH 30 wheels, with Boost 110×20/157x12mm spacing. Bontrager G5 Team Issue 2.5” tires offer excellent grip, however I did flat the rear tube twice. I haven’t flatted a DH bike in years so I’m not sure if the tubes are especially thin or if it’s the tire. Either way, I went tubeless and haven’t had any issues since.

More Bontrager goodies fill the cockpit: Line Pro 820mm bars, a Line Pro Direct Mount 50mm stem and XR Trail Elite grips, which we removed pretty quickly. After a near death experience clipping a tree just before a drop, I cut down the bars to about 777mm, and while they have a strange look and feel at first, they weren’t something I focused on once I started riding.

I was both surprised and reaffirmed when I learned the Session 9.9 29er has 190mm of travel. As mentioned above, I don’t look at the details of a bike before riding it. Clearly I can’t be totally unaware of what some bikes offer, but I try to avoid the spec sheet until after my testing, or sometimes mid-test if something doesn’t feel right. I want to be open minded and let the bike speak to me during the test period without my brain telling me what I should be feeling based on a chart.

The shortened travel wasn’t something I completely noticed during my test rides, but in hindsight it made sense. What I mean by that is, the bike rode differently than the 27.5 and 26-inch Sessions when it came to landing drops or larger jumps. It did not feel harsh by any means, it just had a firmer feel that I attributed to more progression in the tune. I reached full travel every run during my testing, but never felt harsh hits or that I was out of travel. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like more though. If possible, I’d love to see this bike with 195mm or even 200mm of travel.

So how does it ride with those big wheels and shorter travel? Like a daggum rocket ship! I rode a demo bike briefly in Whistler Bike Park. It was slack, low and certainly better than some of the other bikes I rode that week, but I wanted more. It was a well-worn demo bike and I knew the understeer and suspension issues I experienced were tunable. Before hopping on the chairlift for my first ride, I got sacrilegious. I put the Mino Link in the High mode! Since I wasn’t dropping into Val Di Sole, I figured I had the ability to navigate the terrain I was about to ride with a head angle more nimble than 62.1 degrees.

What I felt on that first ride was pure magic. I had no understeer, the bike stood up a bit taller, was a little bit shorter and put me right where I wanted to be – in a position to command the bike. That first ride was the beginning of what I hope is a long relationship (Wink wink, Trek can I keep it?) I only spent about two runs tweaking suspensin and quickly settled in on my tune. As my speed increased with familiarization to the bike, I added about five more PSI and 2-3 clicks of compression depending on the track.

I’m not always a fan of the Fox 40, as it can ride a bit stiff and beat up my hands, but this fork feels buttery smooth and the rear shock is the same. I actually found that running a little bit more sag was preferred for my riding style and terrain. I don’t live for the jump lines, instead preferring the natural steeps and chunky stuff with natural gaps. The softer spring rate kept me on the ground when I wanted, but added compression prevented me from blowing through travel when I didn’t. I’m sure this softer set up is also why I was reaching bottom out on all my race-paced test runs, but this isn’t a bad thing according to some schools of thought. The trade off for regularly using all the travel is insane traction and confidence, well above what many other bikes have offered me.

While the suspension performance is a highlight of the Session 9.9 29, the thing that blew me away is the out and out speed of the bike. Specifically, how fast it gets up to speed. I took two practice runs down a newer trail at Mt. Bachelor that is a steep fall line and navigates everything from lava rock to flat, loose turns, massive ruts and very aggressive roots. During my sighting laps I’d inspect lines, erosion changes, etc. Every time I hopped back on the Session 29 and let off the brakes I was instantly back up to speed, like I’d never stopped. No pedal strokes needed, the bike just picked up steam and charged down the trail like I was trying to scare myself!

The larger wheels are definitely noticeable and something I was very aware of every time I got on the bike. This is both good and not so good. The bike feels a bit larger and gives me a feeling of being right in the middle of two massive steamrollers. Benefits of the big wheels are plentiful, as the bike is beyond stable and allows for errors in line selection or lazy riding while still maintaining top speed because the added roll-over ability offers a larger margin of error. However, if you screw up the entry to a tight turn like a switchback, the length and big wheels will not treat you well. Swinging wide is the way to go, but if you live to jackknife corners like you’re always being filmed for an Instagram edit, you’ll have your work cut out for you.

Another noteworthy point is the seat height. I’m not quite six foot and rode a size large and had to cut quite a bit off the seat post. If you think of DH bike seat post heights by comparing a World Cup racer to a FEST Series rider, you’ll know that there is a big difference in riding style. This bike is most definitely a racer as the larger wheels don’t allow for a totally slammed post, and this may be an issue for riders with short legs, especially if you’re a big jumper. Which is another place that the Session 9.9 29er didn’t completely blow me away.

Downhill bikes are very purpose specific tools, and this is very clearly a race rig, so I didn’t expect it to be a whip machine. I’m not Brendan Fairclough or some amazing rider, but the added rotational mass was definitely noted when I wanted to make quick changes in the air. Still, the 34.91-pound weight and poppy suspension feel kept me more than happy when I was playing around on the jumpy stuff.

The Wolf’s Last Word

Alright, so let’s pretend we’ve all got A.D.D and you just asked me if you should buy this bike because you don’t have time to read. If I had to reply in one word I’d say, “Hellyes!” BUT, I’m also very chatty when it comes to bikes so instead I’d like to ask what your budget is, what type of riding you prefer most and what you want out of your DH bike.

If you’ve got the budget, are looking for a flat out race machine to make you as competitive as possible, love plowing over shit as fast as you can, or want something to give you that extra little edge when it comes to racing the clock, then I think the Session 9.9 29er is probably one of my top recommendations. If you think spending over eight grand on a bicycle is ridiculous, love to jump, whip and slash, then I’d suggest looking at other options, perhaps a Session 8 27.5 ($4,279).

Ultimately, the Session 9.9 29 has become one of my favorite DH bikes in recent memory. Then again I’m the type of guy who goes to Whistler Bike Park and proudly skips A-Line in favor of the least popular woodsy DH tracks I can find. For me, the trade off in playfulness on the jump lines is well worth the added speed, traction and comfort on proper downhill trails. Just make sure you keep the spokes real tight, or else they’ll be making some weird noises!

Getting to grips with 2018 Trek mountain bikes

If you pop over to Trek’s website and click on ‘mountain bikes’ more than 120 bikes appear in front of you. It’s rather daunting. Choice is good but can be bewildering. So we’ve boiled Trek’s MTB range down to the basics to get you started.

>>> Trek road bikes: which model is right for you?

trek mountain bikes

What type of bike do you want?

We think it’s best to split the whole range into three categories and then go from there: hardtail , full suspension and electric .

What type of riding will you be doing?

Once you’ve chosen one of the three categories you can refine it to the type of riding you want to do: cross-country, trail or downhill.

With those two category types chosen you’ll be left with a much smaller pool of Trek models to consider.

We’re going to assume that you already know the type of mountain bike you want. We’re not going to go into any debates or theorising (hardtail vs full suspension, 27.5 vs 29 , Plus vs Fat etc etc).

trek mountain bikes

Trek hardtails

There are five hardtail models in Trek’s range: Marlin, X-Caliber, Roscoe, Procaliber and Stache.

Trek use their own proprietary frame materials. Their aluminium stuff is called Alpha. Their carbon stuff is called OCLV.

Some of their high end hardtails have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ configuration where the seat tube is designed to flex for compliance.

The Trek Marlin is an entry level cross-country focussed hardtail ranging from £370 up to £550. Thee are four models in total (the Marlin 4, 5, 6 and 7). The frame is Trek’s ‘Silver Alpha’ aluminium.

The Trek X-Caliber cross-country range starts from £650 and tops out at £1,150. The frame is Trek’s ‘Gold Alpha’ aluminium. The frames have internal routing for stealth dropper seatposts. The components are of a higher quality than the Marlins.

The Trek Roscoe range of Plus-tyred trail hardtails running from £800 to £ 1,250. The frame has internal routing for dropper posts and is made from Trek’s ‘Alpha Gold’ aluminium.

The £1,300 to £6,500(!) Trek Procaliber cross-country race bike range can look a a bit confusing; there are aluminium Procalibers, OCLV carbon Procalibers and Super Light OCLV Procalibers. Although the frame material varies the intent of Procalibers is the same: xc racing. The geometry remains the same. All Procalibers have the ‘IsoSpeed Decoupler’ feature of deliberate flex.

The Trek Stache bikes are rather unique in that they are 29er Plus bikes. They roll on some seriously large rubber! Monster trucking hardtails. Price: £1,300 to £3,500.

Trek full suspension bikes

There are five Trek full susser types: Fuel EX, Remedy, Top Fuel, Slash and Session.

All Trek full sus bikes use a version of the ‘ABP’ suspension design. ABP stands for Active Braking Pivot. The rear wheel axle is also the rear pivot. The idea is to prevent the suspension from locking up during rear braking.

Fuel EX, Remedy and Top Fuel bikes also have RE:aktiv rear shock damping. This damping design claims to ‘know’ which forces are coming from the pedals/rider and which forces are coming from the trail, and it reacts accordingly.

The Trek Fuel EX 130mm travel, full sus, all-rounder, trail bikes come as either 29er or as 27.5 Plus. They can be run with either wheel size but are initially purchased with one or the other. Starting from £1,800 for aluminium versions they top out at £6,500 for the top end carbon version.

>>> Trek Fuel EX Plus 9.8 27.5 (2017) review

The Trek Remedy is the 150mm travel trail-cum-enduro bike. Prices range from £2,300 to £6,000. There are aluminium Remedy models and carbon fibre Remedy models. For 2018 they are all 27.5in wheel.

The Trek Top Fuel bikes are full suspension XC race machines. 100mm of travel at either end. Begins with the aluminium Top Fuel 8 for £2,400 and goes up to the £7,800 carbon Top Fuel 9.9 RSL.

>>> Trek Top Fuel 9 (2017) review

trek mountain bikes

2018 Trek Slash

The 160mm travel enduro racing Trek Slash range is all 29in wheels and carbon only for 2018. It’s a bold move by Trek but one that makes the Slash arguably the most defined model in their range.

>>> Trek Slash 9.9 29 RSL (2017) review

The Trek Session is the downhill bike. Aluminium or carbon. And now available as a frameset as a 29er with 190mm of travel. Complete build Sessions are all 27.5in wheel and deliver 210mm of rear travel.

trek mountain bikes

Trek electric mountain bikes

There are three electric mountain bike types: Powerfly, Powerfly FS and Powerfly LT Plus.

The Trek Powerfly hardtails start at £2,300 and go up to £3,300. Aluminium frames with 100mm travel forks up front. The motors come from Bosch. There is also a £4,200 Powerfly Plus with 2.8in tyres.

On the Trek Powerfly FS bikes the ‘FS’ stands for Full Suspension, 130mm of suspension to be precise. The Powerfly FS bikes are aimed at cross-country riding with a bit of rougher stuff every now and then. All but the entry level £3,500 Powerfly 5 FS come with Plus tyres.

trek mountain bikes

Trek Powerfly Launch in Verbier, Switzerland

The Trek Powerfly LT Plus models have more travel (150mm) and fatter tyres (2.8in Plus tyres). These e-bikes are up for a bit more aggro riding and technical trails. Prices: £4,200 to £5,250.

Trek Women’s mountain bikes

Even as stalwarts of the whole Women’s Specific Design thang, Trek (along with most other bike brands) are now seemingly moving away from design theories that assume that women’s body proportions are different to men’s.

Bikes fit humans, not genders. Rider height is the only thing you should really be factoring in when choosing a bike. It really is only saddles that need to be a bit different to men’s.

It’s fine to opt for a supposedly ‘men’s’ Trek model if it fits your height. Get the saddle swapped out for a ladies saddle at time of purchase. Sorted.

Having said that, if you want a Women’s bike because you prefer the different colourway and decals, fair enough.

  • Trek Skye – entry level cross-country hardtails
  • Trek X-Caliber Women’s –  lighter and fancier cross-country hardtails
  • Trek Roscoe Women’s – Plus tyred trail hardtail
  • Trek Procaliber Women’s – XC racing hardtail
  • Trek Fuel EX Women’s – 130mm travel full suspension all-rounder
  • Trek Remedy Women’s – 150mm trail/enduro full susser
  • Trek Powerfly Women’s – entry level e-bike hardtail
  • Top Fuel Women’s – XC racing 100mm travel full suspension

Race Shop Limited models

You may spot some Trek mountain bikes with ‘Race Shop Limited’ (or ‘RSL’) in their model name. These are essentially super high spec models. Often limited edition. And sometimes with slightly tweaked designs (a bit more travel, slacker geometry etc etc).

Mark Webber’s Top Fuel Project One

Trek’s Project One

This is Trek’s custom paint and decals option. Yep, if you have the funds and are prepared to wait a bit for your bike, then you can get a Trek in pretty much any colour scheme you want.

Be warned: you can waste hours (days!) tinklering away with the online Project One dream bike builder.

It’s only available on a few mountain bike models: Top Fuel, Fuel EX and Procaliber.

Looks like a Session… or does it? The benchmark of downhill mountain bikes is back with a whole new look – and a whole lot of new speed to go with it. Park runs or World Cup circuit, Session finds the fast on the rowdiest trails with a new high-pivot frame design, 200 mm of travel and the world’s best suspension tech.

  • See the bikes

trek session rsl

The winningest downhill bike Raking in thirteen World Cup DH gold medals, the Session takes the cake as the winningest race bike of 2021. With plenty of gold medals under its belt, it’s no surprise that the Session earned the title as the fastest downhill ride of the year from both the Pinkbike and Global Mountain Bike Networks.

All speed, no hang-ups Session’s high-pivot suspension design The Session features a high-pivot suspension design that results in a rearward axle path, allowing the back wheel to move with the rearward force produced by bumps rather than against it. On the trail, this translates to smoother suspension that doesn’t get hung up on obstacles and instead maintains more forward momentum and provides better grip.

trek session rsl

Less kickback. More performance. Session’s idler pulley Pedal-kickback is that feeling you get when your crank rotates backward as your suspension compresses. It’s the result of tension caused by chain growth – when the rearward axle path increases the distance between your cogs and front chainring. To keep you rolling smoothly on even the rowdiest lines, the new Session is equipped with an idler pulley that routes the top section of the chain closer to the high pivot and virtually eliminates chain growth and all of its negative effects.

Tune for your trail

Session now features a Mino Link suspension adjustment so you can tune your ride for your kind of session. Choose a firmer 25% progression for race day or the plusher 20% progression for park days.

New reach-based sizing

The new Session has a sizing strategy based on reach rather than seat tube length, which lets you choose the size that best fits your riding style. Size up for more stability at speed, size down for more manoeuvrability.

Size-specific chainstays

Ride balanced, whatever your frame size. Session’s chainstays grow to match the frame’s size, ensuring you get the right weight distribution for control on your biggest lines.

Run it mullet!

Every Session comes stocked for speed with 29er wheels, but the frame accommodates 27.5˝ wheels and party-in-the-back riders can run 29er up-front only.

Hitch without worry

Full-coverage armour helps prevent down tube damage from trail debris and makes for worry-free shuttling on tailgates and chair lifts.

Route it your way

Run your cables in whatever custom variation you prefer: externally for easy replacement or internally to prevent snags and hang-ups.

Additional trail bike options

Slash is a long-travel trail bike that looks like a monster truck and rides like a magic carpet. It’s built for big all-mountain terrain, racing the clock on rugged enduro lines and having a rip-roaring good time in the rough.

Remedy is a hard-charging trail bike with 27.5˝ wheels, a 160 mm fork and 150 mm of rear travel and all the stoke-worthy features that make it perfect for hitting jumps, roosting corners and throwing down on the trail.
