AJ Odudu and Rosie Jones hiking up Cairn Gorm mountain in Trip Hazard.

Rosie Jones’ Trip Hazard: rainy, grey – and perfect British holiday TV

The comedian and her guests take messy, chaotic and silly journeys into the slight rubbishness of UK holidays. It’s exactly the fun-packed approach you need for this kind of travel show

I t is a tough time for the TV travel show. It feels like a relic of a distant age, like Babycham or job security. For starters, the role of the travelogue has changed. In the evolving cultural climate, we have started to accept that simply pointing and staring at other countries and their inhabitants is no longer good enough. Throughout the era of cheap flights, when it was possible to nab a £20 seat on a plane to Pisa for the weekend to see the leaning tower, there was less call for an unqualified famous person to appear on our screens and explain why it was wonky. And let’s not even get started on the climate and the environmental impact of long-distance travel. You can see why it might be getting harder for the travelogue to thrive.

There are plenty of series trying to find a workaround, from many different angles. There’s the grand, trad adventurer, crossing continents on foot while properly engaging with geopolitical issues. There’s the ultra-local, slowburn BBC Four-type of series, in which a presenter goes for a lovely stroll, or a swim, or sails a barge, and chats to the camera about their lovely thoughts and lovely feelings. And then there’s the comedian-led approach, which mostly treats the holiday as a washing line on which to peg its sun-warmed jokes. The destination is fine, a source of passing interest, but it will never really be the star.

Rosie Jones’ Trip Hazard (23 August, 10pm, Channel 4) is in that last camp, though very much without the sun. The comedian and “national liability” visits various British destinations within a reasonable budget and tears around the place generally causing chaos.

Rosie Jones and Joe Wilkinson in Whitby.

Having done the Lake District, Whitby, Norwich and Anglesey, Jones begins this second run in Moray, Scotland. There are more episodes than series one, and each is longer, plus it has added Joanna Lumley as narrator, which is a nice touch – as if one travel presenter is waving to another.

Jones’s companion is presenter and Strictly almost-finalist AJ Odudu, and the pair have big “hen do for an outdoorsy bride” energy. It looks like a lot of fun, though perhaps less so for the guides showing them how to do things. They try clay pigeon shooting – there are plenty of gags about a woman with cerebral palsy being handed a shotgun – and whisky tasting, and they row across a loch, or part of it, and visit an eco-village where they make clay pots, or at least try to, and then they climb a mountain. It has the feel of a very British holiday, in that it’s often pouring it down and nobody really wants to be there, but everyone is going to make the bloody best of it, OK, because the queue to go through security at the airport now extends into the long-stay car park and the Airbnb was non-refundable and it was either this or glamping at the pig farm down the road, so shut up and eat your packed lunch in the car.

It’s messy and chaotic and silly, and it certainly doesn’t skimp on fun. They get the giggles over whisky (“sausage roll” is not, it turns out, a tasting note), and lose the plot over the pottery wheel, when every sentence uttered by their poor potter is caressed into a euphemism. I will never be able to watch the Great British Pottery Throwdown without thinking of their faces at the suggestion that they “stabilise the rim”. Though the general idea is that they will take on challenges, the biggest challenge of the whole episode turns out to be when the owner of the eco-village tries to get them to be silent in the “quiet garden”, where residents usually go to meditate.

The danger of taking this tone – naughty kids at the back of the class – is that it might seem sneery, but this pulls off a tricky double-hander. It is frank about the slightly grey rubbishness of certain UK holidays and the things we do to make them entertaining, while also celebrating these traditions and activities with unfettered, slightly unhinged glee, from the good parts to the bad. It feels like a very honest postcard from a sensible summer break. At the end, Odudu and Jones do eventually climb their mountain (“I thought it would be more of a big hill”) and reach the summit, only for the weather to turn so spectacularly that they barely have a view of their own hands, let alone any picture-perfect scenery. It is a highly relatable ending.

Episode menu

Series 2, episode 2 - blackpool, further details.

Rosie takes Man Like Mobeen star Guz Khan to Blackpool, where she's booked the UK's highest skydive: a ridiculous 15,000-foot drop.

Before they take on this challenge of a lifetime, they psych themselves up with classic Blackpool mainstays - a palm reader whose family have been telling fortunes there for a century, and the tallest roller coaster in the country.

There's a trip to an indoor skydiving centre to get used to feeling the Gs, and Rosie takes their minds off their impending doom with an iconic Blackpool activity: dancing. Not just a hip-hop dance lesson, but also a traditional waltz competition at the legendary Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

At the end of the trip, will they go through with the terrifying skydive?

'Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure' on C4 — start date, guests, destinations and everything you need to know

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure sees comedian Rosie Jones exploring the best British minibreaks.

Scarlett Moffatt and Rosie Jones pose atop a hill in the Lake District

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure on C4 is comedian Rosie Jones's guide to the best getaways in the UK — and with the country gradually opening up again after lockdown, it couldn't have come along at a better time.

In each episode, Rosie will be visiting a fantastic UK destination to explore some of the things visitors can do there in a short break — and she's bringing a famous friend along each time to keep her company.

"I've been wanting my own travel show for so long," says Rosie. "Basically, I'm good friends with Romesh [Ranganathan], and I just think, 'why does he get them all? Give some to me!'"

In her quest to become "a disabled, northern Joanna Lumley", Rosie will be trying out local activities, sampling regional delicacies, and getting to know the people who make each area great. Here's everything you need to know about her new series...

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure start date

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure begins on Friday April 9 at 8.30pm on C4. The full series will also be available as a box set on All4 from Friday April 9.

Scarlett Moffatt and Rosie Jones all dressed up for a Viking battle re-enactment in the Lake District

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure locations

Each of the four episodes sees Rosie heading to a different part of the UK. She starts out in the Lake District in episode one, where she takes part in a Viking re-enactment and spends the night with a stallion, while episode two sees her visiting Whitby to hunt for fossils and sample some world-beating fish and chips.

Episode three is in Norwich, where Rosie gets a closer look at the city's famed cathedral and explores the popular local wrestling scene, and the series ends in Anglesey, where she has a go at herding sheep and rides the world's fastest zipwire.

"We came up with the idea during the first lockdown," says Rosie. "I spent it with my mum and dad in Yorkshire, and I'd forgotten how beautiful the scenery is there, so I rang up my friends at [production company] Studio 71 and was like, 'right, we can't do a travel show roaming around Bolivia, but what if we take advantage of what we have on our doorstep?'"

"I loved the Lake District, that was just beautiful," Rosie continues. "The highlight of that was making sausages, until I broke the sausage-making machine and I was mortified . Whitby has a special place in my heart because I'm from Bridlington, which is just down the road. My highlight there was dressing up as a goth — goths are just the nicest people in the world!"

"We went to a vineyard in Norwich — I didn't know they made wine there!" adds Rosie. "I got a little bit drunk. And the weather in Anglesey was beautiful — the highlight there was the fastest zipline in the world, the views were incredible."

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure guests — who's joining Rosie on her travels?

Scarlett Moffatt joins Rosie in episode one in the Lake District, while Joe Wilkinson is her companion in Whitby in episode two. Jamali Maddix accompanies Rosie to Norwich for the third episode, and the series concludes in Anglesey with Jenny Eclair.

"We really wanted to get a wealth of different guests," says Rosie. "All four of them I knew and had met before, so that was a big plus. They needed to be good, friendly people who would also be a little reluctant, like: 'why? Why have you brought me to Whitby?' I love watching all four episodes as a whole because they all bring something different: Scarlett meets me on my level of enthusiasm and we become a tag-team pair, and then me and Jenny have more of a mother-daughter relationship. Who did I bully more, Joe or Jamali? I bullied them both, but I was probably meaner to Joe..."

Trip Hazard: My Great British Adventure voiceover: who's that doing the narration?

No, your ears are not deceiving you, that is indeed the one and only Olivia Colman narrating Rosie's travels. How did that come about?

"I still can't believe it!" says Rosie. "The producer said to me, 'right, no one's off the table — who do you want to do your voiceover?' and I said, 'Oscar-winner Olivia Colman'. The producer was like, 'okay, we're not going to get her...', and I said, 'just ask her, because even if she says no, we will have had communication', like, I will frame that 'no' email, I will be so happy. About a week later, the producer said, 'she said yes!', and nobody could believe it. I screamed for about 48 hours! I'm not saying anything that people don't know about her, but she's lovely, caring and giving. I just feel that her narration elevates the whole show. I love hearing her judging, sarcastic voice in every scene!"

The hour-long film, which is called Am I a R*tard?, sees the 33-year-old comedian explore how prevalent disability trolling is in the UK, and why it's often left unchecked.

Rosie sets herself the challenge of confronting a troll directly, and explores the role that social media plays in the rise of this abuse. She wants everyone in the UK to be made aware of ableism and to stand up to it when they see it and for everyone to play their part in ending the suffering of people who are abused simply because of their disability.

The new documentary airs on Thursday, July 20. But who exactly is Rosie Jones and what is her disability? Here's everything you need to know. For more showbiz and television stories, get our newsletter here .

Who is Rosie Jones?

Rosie, who is originally from east Yorkshire, began performing stand-up at Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 where she gained recognition for her edgy style.

Since then, she has appeared on a number of panel shows including Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, QI, Would I Lie To You?, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and The Big Fat Quiz of Everything. Rosie has also appeared in the likes of dramas Silent Witness, Doctors, and Casualty.

A writer as well as a performer, Rosie worked on Netflix's Sex Education and also as a researcher on Would I Lie To You? and Cats Does Countdown. Her standup sets, meanwhile, often focus on her identity as a gay disabled woman from the north of England, and she has previously said that she can get away with jokes that an able-bodied person could not.

What is Rosie Jones' disability?

Rosie has ataxic cerebral palsy - a brain condition which affects the cerebellum, and is present in 5% to 10% of cerebral palsy cases.

The cerebellum is responsible for bodily coordination, and therefore those living with the condition have difficulty coordinating their arms, legs, and torso. It also causes tremors in the body which get more pronounced as movement increases and can cause speech impediments.

“As you tell by my voice, I’m Northern,” is just one of the many jokes that Rosie makes, as her speech is slower compared to most.

Rosie Jones: Am I a R*tard? airs on Channel 4 at 10pm on Thursday, July 20
