TTR Tour, X-Games, Dew Tour and FIS World Cup results in one World Snowboarding Points List

TTR is making another major step in order to break down barriers in the world of competitive freestyle snowboarding, TTR Pro Snowboarding today announces the launch of the universal World Snowboarding Points Lists.  The new points lists will include available results from all major snowboarding events including the TTR World Snowboard Tour, XGames, Dew Tour and FIS World Cups.  They will provide world ranking lists for male and female halfpipe, slopestyle and big air athletes.

TTR President Reto Lamm: “This is the first ranking list of its kind for freestyle snowboarding and has been introduced by TTR Pro Snowboarding as a next step in advancing the organization of the sport. For the first time in its history, snowboarding now gets a transparent, up-to-date ranking resource. This allows fans, riders, event organizers and media to see who the truly best riders are. This is more proof of TTR´s efforts to provide the best competitive environment for the sport of snowboarding.”

With many separate organizations operating snowboarding events, the TTR has launched the new universal points lists to introduce a complete world ranking resource for riders, events, nations, media and the snowboard industry.  The purpose of the new points lists are to create a definitive world ranking that shows the true leaders in the disciplines of halfpipe, slopestyle and big air.

The World Snowboarding Points Lists have been developed by TTR Pro Snowboarding in collaboration with national snowboarding associations around the world, riders, events and coaches.  The new lists will be available as public domain at www.ttrworldtour.com as of today, February 18, 2012 and will be free for all to reference and use as a tool.  From this point forward, TTR Pro Snowboarding will use the lists for seeding and qualifying riders into TTR events.

The introduction of the World Snowboarding Points Lists is just one piece of a comprehensive strategy that TTR has developed in order to progress the organization of the sport and to further distinguish TTR as the leader in competitive snowboarding.

TTR pro snowboarding publishes world snowboard tour calendar along with new tour structure

ttr world snowboard tour

Based on four event categories, Elite, International, National and Regional, the new tour structure provides more transparency and a clear career path, allowing riders to climb the ranks from Rookie through to Elite level events, under one unified system. The World Snowboard Tour (WST) events on the Elite level form the brand new World Snowboard Tour Pro Series, in which only the best riders from around the world will compete for the Pro Series Champion titles in Slopestyle (m/f) and Halfpipe (m/f). The riders field of Pro Series events will be composed of Qualified Riders, determined by the World Snowboarding Points Lists (WSPL) in the respective discipline, Series Wildcards, determined by a committee selected by the Global Snowboarders Alliance (GSA), and Event Wildcards, allocated by the event organizer on a per event basis. This makes for a more consistent starter field than in the past, allowing more tension and transparency for the Tour´s global audience. With the new Tour structure and the launch of World Snowboard Tour Pro Series, competition snowboarding is another step closer to a rider-friendly and transparent Tour for all participants. Regretfully the organizer of Winter X-Games Aspen has decided to part ways with the World Snowboard Tour this season. Furthermore, Air+Style has not yet confirmed its membership in this year´s Tour. This means that Air+Style in Beijing, China, this weekend December 5th - 6th 2014, will not be part of the World Snowboard Tour and the results will not count for the World Snowboard Tour Pro Series ranking. But the individual results will count for the WSPL World Snowboarding Points List. Should Air+Style come to a positive conclusion, which would very much be welcomed by TTR, the Air & Style Innsbruck and the Air & Style L.A. will be acknowledged as part of the World Snowboard Tour Pro Series. Reto Lamm, President of TTR Pro Snowboarding: “With the new and improved tour concept of the World Snowboard Tour we are pushing further towards a unified environment in competitive snowboarding. Even if we failed in hitting the jackpot, as we did not reach an agreement on commercialization between the top events and IMG, we implemented much of the plan we had presented at the TTR General Assembly in Barcelona. The four levels of events make the tour more transparent and understandable for media, public and riders: The Regional level consists of local events with local impact, National level events will be national event series, national championships and other events in one country, high-profile international events will be found in the International level of the tour, who prepare the riders for the next and final stage. The highest Elite level forms the World Snowboard Tour Pro Series, which combines the best riders in the world as well as the best events worldwide, including significant prize money, TV and global media coverage, coupled with first-rate, progressive venues. The situation for the sport would of course be better, if Air+Style as well as X-Games and Dew Tour decided to join the Tour. This would do the sport, the riders and themselves a great service.”

World Snowboard Tour Pro Series to kick off at Burton European Open presented by MINI in Laax, Switzerland The first official stop of the World Snowboard Tour Pro Series will be one of the highest profile events of the year, the infamous Burton European Open presented by MINI in Laax, Switzerland. From January 29th - February 1st 2015, riders, industry leaders and spectators will gather at the all new Superpipe and an innovative Slopestyle course on Crap Sogn Gion. Immediately following BEO, it’s off to the United States to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association´s Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain, US (February 2nd - 7th 2015), the Slopestyle and Halfpipe event at the esteemed Unbound Park. The final stage of the World Snowboard Tour Pro Series 2014/15 will be held at the Burton US Open presented by MINI in Vail, US from March 2nd - 7th 2015, where this season’s Halfpipe and Slopestyle Pro Series Champions will be crowned.

TTR Pro Snowboarding announces freestyle results database

TTR Pro Snowboarding, the operator of the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour, is pleased to announce the launch of the first-ever competitive freestyle snowboarding results database. Just in time for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, the TTR has launched a website where journalists and other interested parties can research individual rider competition results from the past 12 years.

The first of it’s kind, the TTR Snowboarding Results Database will cover results reaching back to 1998 and extend to the current date of competitive freestyle snowboarding. The database will cover slopestyle, halfpipe, quarterpipe and big air disciplines and will also reach outside of the Swatch TTR World Tour events to include major events such as the XGames, Dew Tour, Vans Cup, USSA and FIS events.

This database has been designed as a reference tool for journalists, media and other interested parties and is free of charge. The purpose for creating this database is to provide a comprehensive reference tool where competition results can be found regardless of what tour or series an individual event may be part of.

Register today on www.snowboardingresults.com to find the first ever result database that does not refer to one sports organisation only.

ABOUT SWATCH TTR: Founded by Terje Haakonsen and industry innovators in 2002, the Swatch Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour is a non-profit, rider-driven organization with the mission “to create the highest quality competitive snowboard environment in the world, using authenticity, accessibility, innovation as guiding principles”. Since its foundation, the Swatch TTR Tour has been developing into the most exposed snowboard tour worldwide featuring global grass root and key independent freestyle snowboarding events over a ten-month period from Southern to Northern Hemisphere locations. Events are rated via a 1-through-6Star system, with points allocated accordingly, a 6Star event holds the highest (1000 points). Any rider participating in these events, from up-and-coming to professional talent, earns ranking points and a position on the Swatch TTR World Ranking List. The top male and female rider based on an average of their best six results of the season (5+1 system) is crowned Swatch TTR World Snowboard Champion. X Games joins TTR World SNB Tour

X Games Aspen and Tignes will be official events on the World Snowboard Tour starting this winter, TTR Pro Snowboarding announced Monday.

It will be a big year for competitive snowboarding. X Games Aspen will join the Arctic Challenge , the Beijing and Innsbruck Air & Style competitions and the Burton U.S. and European Opens as a 6Star event on the 2012-13 tour. X Games Tignes, also a 6Star event, will count toward Tour points for the 2013-14 season.

TTR also will co-sanction the 2012-13 USSA Grand Prix competitions as 5Star events. The Grand Prix has been elevated to FIS World Cup status this year, so those events will count for Olympic qualification points as well as points on the World Snowboard Tour.

"The X Games is one of the most important events to us," 2012 TTR Big Air champion Seppe Smits said. "It's great that it's a part of the World Snowboard Tour now. It's also relieving to know that with the Grand Prix serving as both Tour points and World Cup result, this gives us a little breathing room in an extremely packed season. We all prefer to ride the World Snowboard Tour events and appreciate the efforts of TTR to work on unifying the tour and making it less hard on us to plan."

The original dream of the "Ticket To Ride" tour, back when legendary snowboarder Terje Haakonsen founded it in 2002, was to unite the many independent snowboard events of the time under one tour umbrella, in order to crown one definitive snowboarding champion at the end of a season.

The structure of that tour has gone through a number of changes since then -- women have joined; there's now a one-to-six-star ranking system for events; discipline-specific titles in slopestyle, big air and halfpipe have been added; the TTR name has been dropped in favor of the World Snowboard Tour -- but the catalyst remains the same: to make all these events count for something more than just individual wins.

The Winter X Games have always stood apart from this, as if on an island where no other contest before or after really mattered. By becoming a part of the Tour, the X Games also become part of a larger narrative that, combined with other decades-old, highly prestigious events on the WST, will tell the true story of a competitive season.

“ The X Games is one of the most important events to us. It's great that it's a part of the World Snowboard Tour now. ” --2012 TTR Big Air Champion Seppe Smits

On the TTR side, while other high-level events have straggled in and out of the picture over the years, the Burton U.S. Open has been the only 6Star event to continuously represent the Tour in North America. For this reason, interest in competing in the full circuit on what has largely been seen as a European tour has waxed and waned among North American riders. The addition of X Games Aspen to the WST lineup should increase the Tour's prestige dramatically.

And because riders on the top of the WST rankings will get X Games invites, the incentive to compete in the full tour will be that much higher.

As to why Tignes will count toward 2014's tour instead of 2013's, Tim Reed, senior director of content strategy for ESPN X Games, said: "X Games and TTR worked to include X Games Tignes as part of the 2013 World Snowboard Tour, but unfortunately X Games could not fulfill on all of the necessary event requirements for a final tour stop, so the collective decision was made to have X Games Tignes become the first event on the 2014 calendar. Needless to say, it will be a great way to kick off 2014 tour schedule."

Although it is not likely that the splitting-up of Aspen and Tignes X Games events between WST tour years will continue past this season, there is a benefit to the current division.

Those who have been following the dramatic ups and downs of TTR's attempts to negotiate with the FIS (skiing and snowboarding's official Olympic governing body) over Olympic qualification issues know that stacked competition calendars have been a massive stress for snowboarders hoping to get one of their country's team spots in the Winter Olympics. Riders are often forced to pick between Olympic-sanctioned FIS competitions and TTR events, causing them to miss out on the full TTR program once every four years.

With Tignes counting toward 2014 WST points, "What we're hoping is that, by getting the opportunity to achieve a 6Star result before the Olympics, riders see it as a way to alleviate some pressure," TTR executive board member Maria McNulty said.

The Olympic qualifying period is already under way. It kicked off in New Zealand in August and will continue until January 2014.

Ttr rebranded ‘world snowboard tour’.

ttr world snowboard tour

The TTR World Snowboard Tour, have just announced via their Facebook page that they have officially dropped the ‘TTR’ in their name and rebranded to ‘World Snowboard Tour.’ They’ve also launched a brand spanking new and improved website to go with it.

The original ‘Ticket To Ride’ was established back in 2002 by Terje Haakonsen and a few other notable event organisers and brand reps as a grassroots tour designed to connect the biggest and most prestigious snowboard contests worldwide. The original tour consisted of 9 events across the globe at which the top rider in each was awarded a ‘TTR Medallion’ that also served as a ‘ticket to ride’ at the final event – the Artic Challenge. This format ran for the following two seasons before the current ‘Star-Tier’ system was introduced, with riders competing to build up ranking points across the various snowboard disciplines. With that change in format, the ‘Ticket To Ride’ aspect of the tour became more or less redundant, although the TTR brand name stuck fast.

While it may seem a little strange to those of us that have got so used to the TTR name over the last few years, the new simplified brand does make a lot more sense and ties in nicely with the renaming of the ‘Artic Challenge’ to the ‘ World Snowboarding Championships ‘ that went down earlier this year. We can’t help but wonder whether or not a WST acroynm will catch on though – it doesn’t quite have the same ring as TTR does it?

This rebranding is the next logical step in making the World Snowboard Tour a cohesive organisation for snowboarding and should hopefully reinforce the plight to take competitive snowboarding back from the International Ski Federation (FIS), who have so far shunned all attempts at working together in the run up to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Understandably, this is an issue that Terje Haakonsen and much of the snowboard community feel pretty strongly about . Only time will tell whether we see any improvements or compromise in the future.
