Consensus sessions: The Surrey good bucket list

The consensus sessions have two main aims. Firstly, to reflect on and bring together the diverse but often fragmented strands of discussion across the conference. Secondly, to try and build a consensus around a future vision of the sector, and the means to achieve ‘back for good’.

Consensus does not necessarily mean agreeing on a single narrative but is more likely to involve identifying broad overall aims and a number of means of achieving these. These may be complementary but it is also important to recognize when they are in conflict. Each consensus panel will mainly focus on a specific theme but the panelists and all participants are also encouraged to make links between the three main conference topics, as well as to other issues beyond these. We can expect that recognition and understanding of these links will build cumulatively across the three days.

The panelists will both reflect and lead our thinking about consensus. They will give a collective voice to what has been argued and contested, whether in presentations, the abstracts or discussions in and around the meeting. They will also provide leadership not only in teasing out shared goals and visions but also in identifying key absences or the significant gaps which have not been addressed. The building of bridges between tourism, hospitality, events and other subject areas will be important in this, as will the bridging of academia and policy/practice.

If you have an agenda item to add to the list prior to the conference, you may start contributing to the discussion on our Padlet below.

WTM London 2023 Conference Programme Announced

World Travel Market London 2023 , the world’s most influential travel & tourism event, has announced details of its conference programme, with high-profile speakers and seminars.

More than 60 conference sessions are lined up, empowering the global travel community, and reminding them they have the Power to Change travel.

The conference programme will include eight new tracks across three stages over three days, taking place at ExCeL London, from 6-8 November 2023. In a move away from previous years, the 2023 conference stages will be named Discover, Elevate and Innovate – a reflection of their goal.

Furthermore, in response to the demand in 2022 – which saw 9,102 visitors attend the WTM London Conference sessions – stage sizes have been increased, and rather than one main stage, WTM will host three equally important stages across the event.

The eight conference tracks will be titled Sustainability, Technology, Geo-Economics, Emerging Markets, Consumer Trends, Marketing, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and Experience and aim to help the global travel community succeed and thrive, by informing, entertaining, and influencing their business decisions.

In another first, the Discover Stage will feature a new layout designed to support networking. Table-based seating, rather than traditional conference-style chairs, will promote networking between sessions, which will also include icebreakers, storytellers, and socialising during breaks.

Some of the key sessions taking place, listed by day, are:

Monday 6 th November

The Ministers’ Summit at World Travel Market in association with UNWTO and WTTC In its 17 th year, this important event in the WTM London calendar brings together the largest gathering of dignitaries from around the world to discuss and ratify key tourism agreements. The Summit will take place on Day One of WTM London 2023. This a change from previous years, when it has taken place on Day Two and signifies the increasing importance of the Summit to the worldwide travel and tourism industry.

Also on Monday 6 th November, attendees can look forward to the release of WTM’s new research WTM Presents…A Global Travel Outlook . Delegates will gain valuable insights into the trends shaping the future of travel with a presentation of the new WTM Global Travel Report , supported by renowned researchers Oxford Economics.

This session will give a voice to the changing needs of travellers, emerging and growing destinations, and uncover behaviours and trends for 2024 and beyond.

Our thanks to Highland Council for sponsoring the 2023 event.

Importance of networking

Last year you told us that networking in-person with businesses across the Highlands is beneficial to encourage collaboration and grow your network. We’ve included plenty of opportunities for networking this year.

This includes an extended time of pre-conference networking (with refreshments, fresh coffee and pastries), interactive breakout sessions and more.

We'll again have an exhibitors space at our conference this year. This provides a great opportunity to connect with organisations who can provide your business with valuable support, information and advice.

Visitbritain upgrades 2023 inbound tourism forecast on back of stronger recovery, driven by usa.

VisitBritain/Adam Jason

Young woman standing on terrace in front of castle

We’ve upgraded our 2023 inbound tourism forecast. Visits overall to the UK this year are now forecast to be 37.5 million, 92% of 2019 levels and inbound visitor spending £30.9 billion, up 9%. See the statement from our CEO Patricia Yates below and the  full revised forecast here .

VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates said:

“Our upgraded  forecast  is on the back of the stronger recovery we’re seeing, led by the USA with spending by American visitors up 42% to a record £6 billion last year alone. Spending by visitors from our major European markets including France and Spain is also coming back strongly, while East Asia including China, our second most valuable inbound market in 2019 worth £1.7 billion, is still well below pre-COVID levels.

“Our priority has been to rebuild visitor value and we’ve been competing hard in markets showing strong recovery with our multi-million pound GREAT Britain marketing campaigns and working with trade so British destinations are sold internationally. We’ve also been investing in separate campaigns in the USA with British Airways and a pilot cooperative marketing programme with industry, converting the interest to visit into bookings now, boosting spend across Britain.”

We were delighted to host our first conferences in four years, which was a chance for us all to celebrate our tourism community after a number of difficult years.  We had our conference in Daliburgh, South Uist on 1 November 2023 and in Stornoway the following week on the 9 November 2023. You can view the speaker presentations here:   Uist&Barra  and  Lewis&Harris .

We explored the latest trends and innovations in the tourism industry and discover new strategies to attract visitors, enhance customer experiences, to boost business and we had an opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and gain valuable insights from successful industry experts and business owners.

This year businesses had the chance to nominate themselves for the inaugural Our Tourism Community Awards . Award nominations have now closed and award winners will be announced at the conferences in November.  Check out  the award winners here .

6 Travel Conferences You Must Attend in 2023 – 2024

6 Travel Conferences You Must Attend in 2023 – 2024

After two years of darkened hotel ballrooms and piles of chairs locked up in conference room corners, the lights are finally switching on. The cobwebs have been swept away, experts contacted, and now the digital ads are in full swing. Travel trade shows are back and with them, enormous opportunity.

Travel agent events like conferences connect travel professionals from around the world to share knowledge, meet vendors and create new partnerships. And let’s be honest, it’s about time we abandon our desks and computer screens and see the world.

That said, below are 6 travel agents trade shows and conferences coming up in 2023-2024 to inspire you with exciting new ideas and help you expand your business vision.

1. Adventure Travel World Summit; Hokkaido, Japan

Do you sell adventure? Or are you looking to pivot into that niche?

The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) sponsors a summit every year for tour operators, travel writers, industry partners and tourism boards who are involved in the adventure travel industry. But it’s much more than a conference. Summit participants join offsite trips in addition to hearing from keynote speakers, maximizing endless networking opportunities, sharing industry information and pitching new story ideas during Media Connect sessions.

The ATTA has already reserved Hokkaido, Japan for September 2023. The event will include adventures into the surrounding wilderness, business meetings and networking opportunities, and time for travel leaders to connect.

2. FITUR 2024; Madrid, Spain

FITUR is an International Tourism Trade Fair organized by IFEMA MADRID. In January 2022, Fitur hosted 600 exhibitors from 107 countries and welcomed over 100,000 visitors. Fitur serves as a meeting place for tourism professionals from around the world. It’s also the leading trade fair for inbound and outbound markets in Latin America.

Fitur targets both mass tourism and niche markets, showcasing new sectors each year as the tourism industry becomes more diverse. It also presents cutting edge technology including artificial intelligence, smart tourist destinations and big data.

Fitur will hold its 44th tourism trade show from January 24th – 28th, 2024. Targeting hotel chains, agencies, tour operators, technological companies, suppliers, transportation and institutions from around the world, Fitur 2024 will focus on how to strengthen post pandemic tourism and how to generate new business opportunities.

3. ITB 2024; Berlin, Germany

ITB takes place at the Berlin ExpoCenter City exhibition center. With more than 10,000 exhibitors, ITB is the largest convention in the travel industry. The convention presents informational stands on countries, destinations, hotels and tourism associations as well as on specialist suppliers, booking systems and transport operators. ITB is a platform for B2B travel industry leaders to meet and network.

ITB’s event will take place in Berlin from March 5th – 7th, 2024. The guest country of ITB 2023 will be Georgia.

4. IPW; San Antonio, Texas

How about a trip to the USA?

US travel exhibitors convene once a year in San Antonio, Texas for the U.S. Travel Association’s IPW international inbound travel trade show. At IPW, US travel exhibitors connect with travel buyers and media from more than 70 countries to share their products and build new business relationships. IPW showcases the American travel industry to its international visitors to promote and increase tourism in the USA.

The U.S. Travel Association’s IPW is the leading international inbound travel trade show. The next convention will take place from May 20th-24th, 2023.

5. ETOA’s Global European Marketplace (GEM); London, UK

For ETOA members only, GEM is ETOA’s annual travel trade event. Not just another tour operators’ event, here tourism suppliers meet new leads and reconnect with existing business contacts. With preset appointments based on business profile and goals, buyers and suppliers meet one-on-one throughout the event.

Participants also attend educational and networking sessions. Close to 400 global and intra-European buyers are invited to GEM’s upcoming event, which will take place from November 2nd – 3rd, 2023 in London, UK.

6. Travel Expo-Travel and Adventure Show

Looking for an excuse to visit a metropolitan center in the USA?

The Travel and Adventure Show is a traveling expo, which will meet in 9 different cities across the USA in 2023 including Chicago, Boston, NY, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Denver, San Francisco, Atlanta and Dallas.

For tour operators, travel agents and tourists alike, the Travel and Adventure Show gives travel companies the opportunity to maximize their marketing and sales by presenting to prescreened audiences. Buyers can obtain the most up-to-date travel and itinerary options, safety protocols directly from the source.

In addition, visitors can attend one or more of the dozens of educational and informational travel workshops that take place throughout the day.

Travel trade shows: are they worth attending?

The last two years wreaked havoc on the travel industry. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), global tourism experienced its worst year on record in 2020. Destinations worldwide suffered a decrease by one billion in international arrivals as compared to the previous year due to the massive drop in demand and the serious travel restrictions.

But with travel restrictions lifting, the travel industry is returning in full force. According to a recent Pulse survey , 73% of business travelers agree that a general increase in business travel is extremely likely and 62% anticipate an increase in their own business travel compared to 2021.

With demand on the rise, it behooves any travel professional to continue networking, building strategic relationships and marketing their products in person at travel trade shows. If the expense was worth it to you in the past, then now, in the current travel industry, the ROI should prove to be even greater.

I was delighted to attend the GSTC conference in #Seville, Spain. The Conference was well-organized in all aspects, from the conducted panel discussions and workshops to the last day of the city tour, which I immensely enjoyed. Over four days, I enjoyed attending sessions, meetings, and workshops by experts, researchers, academics, trainers, consultants, and entrepreneurs in the tourism industry and their experiences in sustainability, and their efforts to apply the principle of sustainability in their work, as well as the tourist destinations in which they work. Such international conferences are an added value to meeting wonderful people (more than 350 participants from 61 countries). First major wildfire of 2024 raging near popular tourist destination

- A forest fire that started in abnormally hot temperatures has burned through through more than 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of land in eastern Spain and forced 180 people to flee their homes, officials said Monday.

The first major wildfire of the season is already burning in Spain following unseasonably hot weather, forcing 180 people to flee their homes.

Firefighters are still tackling the blaze, which began on Sunday near Tarbena, around 20 miles from the coastal resort of Benidorm in Valencia , according to Ary News.

Temperatures hit 30C on the day, almost 10C above the average high for April.

Media reports suggest it may have been started by an agricultural fire, with heat, wind and low humidity helping it to spread.

The region’s emergency services said the fire was still active on Monday after a ‘complicated’ night for firefighters, according to Ary News, adding the blaze had destroyed more than 500 hectares of land.

Pilar Bernabe, the central government representative in Valencia told local TV that around 180 people had been evacuated.

Troops from the UME military emergency unit joined firefighters on the ground, while eight air units assisted from above.

The AEMET national weather service reported temperatures of 30C across the country, including as far north as the Pyrenees.

The first major blaze of 2024 follows an intense year for forest fires in 2023, with an area twice the size of Luxembourg burnt across the EU.

In July, thousands of tourists were forced to flee Rhodes as flames tore across the island , while Turkey, Italy, Cyprus, Algeria and Tunisia were among the other Mediterranean countries left devastated by wildfires throughout the summer .

The UK was not exempt, suffering numerous wildfires across the country including what was believed to be the ‘biggest ever’ blaze after a fire in the hills above Loch Ness was visible from space .
