Hiking Tours in the British Isles

Explore the stunning British Isles on foot and uncover history, culture, and stunning views on these guided hiking tours.

Lying just off the western coast of Europe are the British Isles– Great Britain, Ireland, and a few other small islands– that hold a wealth of fascinating history, tons of breathtaking views, and plenty of options for hiking trails to explore. While the cities of London, Edinburgh, Dublin, and many others are some of the main attractions, the British Isles also boast a large array of natural wonders to explore from the soaring mountains of the Scottish highlands to the fells rising between the lakes in Lake District National Park. Exploring this area on foot is the best way to get a true sense of this diverse landscape that retains remnants of civilization from the Roman era, the Middle Ages, and up until the present day.

More About Hiking the British Isles

While not typically thought of as a hiking destination, the British Isles should not be missed whether you’re looking for a long distance hiking trip or an inn based tour with stunning scenery in between cozy stays.

There are many options for guided hiking tours to the British Isles to maximize your time enjoying the area and minimize the time you spend figuring out pesky logistics. Intrepid offers a number of tours through Wildland Trekking to this part of the world that encompass a wide range of styles and difficulties. You can walk the Wicklow Way in the Irish countryside that leads you over high moorland and densely forested heaths. This trail travels over the Wicklow Mountains through many quaint villages and offers opportunities to trek up soaring mountains for majestic views. Or you could stroll along the remains of Hadrian’s Wall in present-day England for a chance to discover the history of this land before the British Empire was established. Built by the forces of Roman Emperor Hadrian in 122AD, this wall is nearly 2000 years old and still has many sections that are intact. Explore the northern English countryside on this trip and also get to see the famous Robin Hood tree at Sycamore Gap.

Elsewhere in the British Isles, the  Scottish highlands and the mighty Ben Nevis, the highest peak in all the British Isles, waits for you to come and conquer their imposing heights, while the serene lakes and quiet fells of the Lake District are a welcoming sight to any hiker. With so many options to chose from, consider each hiking adventure before deciding which one to join as you come to explore the lesser known areas of the British Isles.

Meet the locals along the way

You can’t set off on our walking tours in Great Britain without meeting a few of the friendly locals. Discover Britain’s cities up close

Our guided walking tours in the UK aren’t just about stunning natural landscapes... We’ll also show you the best of Britain’s cities on foot. All you need to know about British Walking Tours

What are walking tours.

A walking tour takes you around a city, park, historical site, or any attraction, on foot. Whether you stroll down cobblestone streets, wander ancient ruins or hike through a forest, you’ll get an intimate look at the local landscapes and culture on a walking tour. Even better, you’ll get some exercise in the fresh air while appreciating the close-up details that are often missed when you whizz by in a car.

Is Windsor Castle worth visiting?

As the world’s largest and oldest occupied castle, Windsor Castle is definitely worth visiting. With almost 1,000 years of history starting with William the Conqueror, the castle is now one of the Queen’s grand homes. We’ll take you to see the castle’s elegant State Apartments with intricate ceilings, artworks and Queen Mary’s Doll House, and St. George’s Chapel where Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle.

What palaces can you visit in London?

While Buckingham Palace is the most iconic palace in London, there are a few more that are well worth a trip. Be sure to check out the famous Kensington Palace, the Kew Palace and stunning Kew Gardens, the regal Hampton Court Palace, and the historic Palace of Westminster. And don’t forget the Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London.

When should I go to Ireland and Scotland?

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the United Kingdom, you can’t miss the highlights of Northern Ireland and Scotland. See the iconic cities like Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh, then discover the spectacular landscapes. Marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, cross to the Isle of Skye, and explore the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Had a wonderful time. Weather was spectacular. Accommodations varied from good to great. Missed the mark on the special food needs for a person in our group but all was worked out. Would suggest taking 1-2 rest days to break the walk up.

R. Pain California

Trip was well organised and everything that was planned for working perfectly. This allowed us to go out and enjoy the countryside without any worries.

This classic Coast to Coast walking route across England was originated and described by Alfred Wainwright, author of a well-known series of mountain-walking guidebooks on the Lake District. The walk starts on the Irish Sea coast of Cumbria near the huge red sandstone cliffs of St. Bees Head. You cross three National Parks before reaching the North Sea at the pretty fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay on the rocky coastline of the North York Moors. - Find comprehensive self-guided and guided walking tours with Walkers' Britain: https://www.walkersbritain.co.uk/united-kingdom/coast-to-coast-walk Tradition has it that you dip your boots in the Irish Sea and take a pebble to deposit in the North Sea at the end of your Coast to Coast walk. That should confuse geologists a few thousand years hence. The first few days take you over some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain of the Lake District by way of the idyllic lakeland valleys of Borrowdale, Grasmere (Wordsworth lived here) and Patterdale, close to Ullswater Lake. You pass Helvellyn, England’s most popular mountain, and the mountain oddly named High Street, along which the Roman Legions marched on their way to Hadrian’s Wall. After leaving the Lake District you cross a gentler landscape round Shap and Orton. Beyond the quaint market town of Kirkby Stephen you enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Two days are then spent walking through the long valley of Swaledale, with its dry stone walls and unspoilt villages. You reach the historic town of Richmond with cobbled streets, sloping market square and famous castle perched above the River Swale. Beyond the arable farmland of the Vale of York, you ascend onto the heather moorlands of the North York Moors, a region of long vistas and easy walking. After crossing the wooded valley of Eskdale you reach the dramatic cliffs of the North Sea Coast. The last few miles of the Coast to Coast walk follow the scenic clifftop path to the red-roofed village of Robin Hood’s Bay. With an extra night here, you can relax on the beach or visit nearby Whitby with its ruined abbey (associated with the Dracula legend) and its Captain Cook Museum. - Find comprehensive self-guided and guided walking tours with Walkers' Britain: https://www.walkersbritain.co.uk/united-kingdom/coast-to-coast-walk #coasttocoast #wainwrightsway #england

British Isles ~ England & Scotland

Cotswolds, lake district, scottish highlands, hebrides islands, edinburgh.

August 6 – 16, 2023 • 11 Days • $6250

Come walk with us over stone bridges and past thatch-roofed cottages in the Cotswolds; through the green, rolling hills and stone-fenced pastures of Beatrix Potter’s beloved Lake District; over heather-clad hills and across Scottish seas to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona; and along the streets of charming Edinburgh, one of our favorite walking cities on the planet!

England and Scotland have long been favorite destinations with Americans. Over the years, no other WAI Adventure has enticed more travelers abroad than our trips to what Shakespeare referred to as “this scepter’d isle” (Richard II). Something about the bucolic panoramas, historic sites, traditional way of life, and familiar names seems to strike a nerve in the heart of the American traveler.  So much of who we are as a nation is tied to Great Britain—we share a similar system of law and government, a common language (sort of), parallel cultures; in short, an inextricably linked heritage.

We invite you to join us in the summer of 2023 as we explore the countries that gave us Shakespeare and Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry VIII and Robert the Bruce, Peter Rabbit and Alice in Wonderland! Come walk with us over stone bridges and past thatch-roofed houses in the Cotswolds; through the green, rolling hills and stone-fenced pastures of Beatrix Potter’s beloved Lake District; over heather-clad hills and across Scottish seas to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona; and along the streets of charming Edinburgh.

Dates for this British Isles walking adventure in England & Scotland are linked to the incomparable Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The oddly named Tattoo is an extravaganza of the performing arts, initially only drum, bugle, and bagpipes, hence the “military” label. Now it’s been expanded to include a dizzying array of performances from all points of the compass, and takes place each August as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.

A significant bonus on this carefully orchestrated itinerary is zero 1-night stays. We stay in each hotel at least 2 nights!

  • All land travel as outlined
  • Superior tourist-class or better hotel accommodations
  • Ferry roundtrip from Oban to Isle of Mull
  • Ferry roundtrip from Isle of Mull to Isle of Iona

We rendezvous in merry ole England today at a hotel in the heart of Shakespeare’s home town – Stratford-Upon-Avon! Birmingham is the closest airport – about a 30-minute taxi ride away.

Early arrivals can find a host of activities to enjoy in town, including a club-hosted walk connecting many of Stratford-Upon-Avon’s points of interest.

Be sure to return in time for this evening’s Welcome Orientation at 6 pm, followed by dinner.

Badby English Countryside Walk – 5 km, rated 2B

A few miles east of Stratford-Upon-Avon is the small, rural community of Badby. A lovely trail here through woods, over stiles, through kissing gates, and across meadows takes us to a charming country chapel with connections to the George Washington family.

A no-host picnic lunch is followed by a rest stop at Fawsley Manor, venerable home of nobility in centuries past.

At walk’s end, we return to our home in Stratford-Upon-Avon for the second night of a three-night stay.

The late afternoon and evening are free to explore, or consider the club walk in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Opportunities to attend a play in one of the Shakespearean theaters will be announced as schedules become available.

Cotswolds Hill & Dale Walk – 7 km, rated 2B

We spend today in the Cotswolds, an area renowned for its honey-colored limestone buildings, thatch-roofed homes, and graceful stone bridges arching across lazy, wandering streams. Trekking trails abound, and we are pleased to present a delightful route through the Cotswold countryside led by local walking friends.

Following our Cotswolds walk, we dilly dally in a couple of cute-as-a-button towns with the uniquely British names of Bourton-on-the-Water and Chipping Campden.

The afternoon highlight is a proper cream tea in Chipping Campden, a delicious southern English novelty not available as we move north.

Windermere Lakeside Stroll – 8 km, rated 1B

We leave Stratford today and continue our Adventure in the beautiful Lake Country of northern England.

The quaint village of Grasmere was home to poet laureate William Wordsworth. It sits on the shore of Lake Grasmere and is our base to explore the Lake District.

Just a few miles south, Lake Windermere is England’s largest lake, and a pleasant walk along its idyllic shores, punctuated by three short lake cruises, provides this afternoon’s introduction to the Lake Country.

Bowness & Beatrix Lake Country Walk – 10 km, rated 3B

A brief morning ferry ride takes us back across Lake Windermere to start today’s hike. Our route climbs along country lanes and through tiny communities to the village of Hill Top, home of beloved children’s author Beatrix Potter.

From Hill Top, we return to Lake Windermere through more pastoral panoramas, winding past stone fences and among groups of complacently grazing sheep.

We cross the lake again reluctantly, leaving with the sense that we’ve discovered a place where time stands still.

Optional Beatrix Potter’s Home & Garden Visit : A short self-guided tour (well-informed docents are on hand) through the home and garden of celebrated children’s author Beatrix Potter’s will be available mid-walk. After the visit, travelers will finish the walk or are welcome to ride the easy-to-use public transport system to return to Bowness-On-Windermere. Estimated price: $25

Lake Grasmere Walk – 6 km, rated 1B

This morning’s walk circles Lake Grasmere, and offers the trademark serenity that has long drawn writers and poets like Wordsworth. Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate during the later years of his life, but earlier earned a reputation as one of the “Lake Poets” while living with his sister Dorothy in Dove Cottage, which we pass during the walk.

Leaving the Lake District, we head north for Scotland and a two-night stay in Oban, the “Gateway to the Isles”, situated directly on the Firth of Lorn.

An excursion to the Hebrides Island of Mull forms the centerpiece of today’s activities.

After a ferry crossing, we motor through remote terrain in the shadow of the volcanic peak, Ben More.

From the tiny hamlet of Fionnphort, a pedestrian ferry takes us to the historic, windswept Isle of Iona —6th century birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. Often attacked by marauding Vikings attracted by the riches of the abbey, the isle offers present-day explorers the singular sensation of wandering this beautiful, isolated corner of the Hebrides, pondering life on the edge of Scotland 1500 years ago.

Glencoe Highlands Walk – 5 km, rated 2B

Glencoe is a famous valley and village connected with one of the most infamous acts of treachery in the long history of conflict between the British crown and Gaelic residents of the British Isles. It also happens to offer some of the most stunning highland panoramas in Scotland. During our walk through the breathtaking vistas of the glen, our guide shares the tragic story of the massacre perpetrated here in 1692.

From Glencoe, we continue east to Stirling Castle to retrace the drama of the centuries-long struggle between the Scots and the English. The castle played a key role both in the story of Scottish monarchy and during the Wars of Independence, when heroics by William Wallace (Braveheart), Robert the Bruce, and many others became forever immortalized.

We continue this evening to Edinburgh for the first night of a three-night stay.

Historic Edinburgh Trail – 10 km, rated 2A

Positioned on a strategic rock, Edinburgh Castle has been used as a fortress since the 7th century, bearing the brunt of this city’s turbulent history.

Our all-day walk in fascinating Edinburgh features the Castle; the Palace of Holyroodhouse; and the Royal Mile, including the John Knox House, Deacon Brodie’s Tavern, Greyfriars Bobby, and a host of other only-in-Edinburgh attractions (admissions not included)!

After dinner on your own this evening, we rendezvous to attend the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo, an unforgettable, outdoor cornucopia of performing arts presented on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.

Arthur’s Seat Walk – 6 km, rated 3C

Enjoy this “bonus day” to explore Edinburgh using the 48-hour hop-on-hop-off bus pass that you received at the beginning of yesterday’s activities. This is a fun and efficient way to get around Edinburgh – returning to highlights you didn’t have time to visit during the walk and exploring new corners of the fascinating city.

We are here during the renowned Edinburgh Art Festival, and there is always an abundance of attractions available simply by strolling the Royal Mile. A bonus hike to Arthur’s Seat is also available today.

Later this evening, we compare notes, swap stories, and reminisce about this English and Scottish Adventure at our Farewell Dinner.

Our travels together in Great Britain end this morning. We return home with new walking friends, fond memories of our adventures, and a greater appreciation of the history, culture, and scenery of the British Isles!

To register, a non-refundable $300 deposit is required to hold your spot. A final payment is due 90 days before departure and is non-refundable after the due date. You will receive a prompt email from us 2 to 3 weeks in advance.

Soon after registration, an “Adventure Advice” email will be sent with critical information on flight arrangements as well as important steps to take in the months before your trip. Please do not buy your airline tickets until you review this Adventure Advice email.

Please follow this link to read our full General Tour Conditions .

With help from local experts and walking guides, these itineraries are hand-crafted with extensive on-site planning by WAI tour planners.

When planning Classic Curated Tours, our objective is to capture the essence of a destination–the history, culture, and natural wonders unique to that part of the world. We then build activities and walks that take us inside these characteristics.

Yes, these tours are educational, but they are also interactive and immersive; walking gets us off the bus and penetrates local cultures to not only see but touch, smell, and feel these special spaces.

Along the way, local walking guides amplify the experience by sharing insights into the magic of that particular location.

We generally walk at a pace of 2 to 3 miles per hour. Several walks on this trip are oriented more towards education, and therefore take longer due to stops for guide commentary. Nature walks, on the other hand, generally continue at a steadier pace because we’re stopping less to talk.

In most cases, we are not “strolling.” We are walking at a relaxed but steady pace. Your experience will be significantly affected by your level of physical fitness. If not walking regularly at home, we strongly recommend that you make a priority of “training” beforehand to both enjoy the trip and avoid medical issues due to overexertion. If you have questions about your ability to participate, please contact our office at [email protected] .

We have adopted a walk difficulty rating system which contains a numeric indicator for trail incline and an alpha indicator for trail terrain. The explanation for this system is presented on the table below:

1. Minimal hills or stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: <200 feet. 2. Some moderate hills and stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: 200-1000 feet. 3. Some significant hill or stair climbing. Cumulative elevation gain: 1000-2000 feet.

A. Almost entirely on pavement. B. A significant part of the route is on well-groomed trails with very few obstacles. C. A significant part of the route is on somewhat difficult terrain (rocky / rooted paths or soft sand).

This Adventure officially starts in Stratford-upon-Avon, England (closest airport is Birmingham Airport; airport code BHX) and finishes in Edinburgh, Scotland (closest airport is Edinburgh Airport; airport code EDI).

Transfers from the airport to our hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon and from our final hotel in Edinburgh to the Edinburgh Airport are not included in the tour price.

We recommend that you contact Laura Pfahler, the travel agent we work with, to help book your flight arrangements.

Details about flight arrangements and recommended travel agent contact information will be provided by email after you register for the Adventure. Please do not book your airfare prior to receiving these flight details from us !

WAI believes strongly in the importance of travel insurance for financial and medical protection from any number of unforeseen circumstances that can arise before departure or during your Adventure. Many travel insurance providers are available for you to consider. Laura Pfahler and Sharon Mitchell of World Travel Inc. are travel agents who provides air travel and insurance services to many WAI travelers.

Check out  Insurance Tips  from World Travel for a short introduction to travel insurance. (NOTE: WAI receives no commission or financial remuneration from World Travel Inc.).

As always, do some shopping to ensure you are getting the best value. Using the  SquareMouth.com  website can be a good way to compare pricing.

Other options include:

Allianz Betins Travel Guard Travel Insured International

NOTE: We suggest purchasing from a reputable, well-established insurance company (avoid buying insurance from an unknown company found only online). Travelers interested in purchasing “cancel for any reason” insurance coverage should be careful to check pricing and terms BEFORE they register for a tour. Recent changes in the international travel landscape has caused changes in the policies of some insurance companies, and made the purchase of this particular type of policy even more time-sensitive.

Walking Adventures International reserves the right to cancel this tour departure with fewer than 12 participants, in which case registered participants will receive a 100% refund of payments received.

This refund policy contains one exclusion. Many suppliers require non-refundable deposits as a condition of booking services. Though it is rare, unforeseen circumstances can force us to cancel a tour. In cases where supplier’s non-refundable policies are imposed, WAI attempts to retrieve as much of these deposits as possible but cannot guarantee a 100% refund. In cases where full refunds cannot be obtained for a cancelled tour, we will do our best to transfer unrefunded money as traveler credits to be applied to a future tour to that destination.

WAI has relaxed our policies and currently require no mitigation procedures (current WAI Wellness on Tour Policy ). However, Walking Adventures International policy includes endeavoring to comply with any COVID-19 policies in place in the destinations through which we travel.

The governments of England and Scotland have now dropped all COVID-19-related restrictions. As of the date of this writing (August 27, 2022) any remaining domestic restrictions have been removed.

We are not currently aware of any COVID-19 policies or restrictions that will impact this tour in England and Scotland.

WAI will update travelers upon learning of any changes.

Travelers participating in the England & Scotland tour must agree to abide by policies in place at the time of travel.

A final payment is due 90 days before departure (May 8, 2023) and is non-refundable after the due date. You will receive a prompt email from us a week or two in advance. Please see our General Tour Conditions for the full terms and conditions for participation in this Adventure.

Around 2-3 weeks before departure, you will receive a final email packet with details of the program, including hotel names and contact information, a list of fellow travelers, and a more detailed daily schedule.

Take a few minutes to peruse the enclosed itinerary.  The majestic landscapes of Great Britain are something to behold.  And walking is the special ingredient for connecting with this land’s natural beauty, intriguing history, and diverse culture!  Enjoy a flight of imagination to Great Britain and consider joining us for this unforgettable Walking Adventure next summer as we explore the British Isles together!

Q. When is the best time of year to walk in the Channel Islands?

A. Being closer to France than they are to England, the Channel Islands experience more hours of sunshine than any other part of the UK and they tend to have warm summers and mild winters. Having said that, they are islands, so of course can be susceptible to changeable weather at times. From April through to October you can usually rely on mostly sunny days. July and August can be busy with other holiday-makers meaning the main towns will be much busier so if you do wish to travel at that time of year, we recommend getting booked up early!

Q. Are they part of the UK?

A. The islands are actually self-governed British Crown dependencies, grouped into the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey. This means they have their own local laws, customs and forms of administration.

Q. Which language is spoken?

A. In Jersey, there are two official languages -  English and French. Around 94% of the population speak English but you will see road signs in French. A third language,  Jerriais, also exists which is an old Norman language and was used during the Occupation. It is thought that around 15% of the Jersey population have some understanding of Jerriais. In Guernsey, English is the official language and the one used most often, but French is used for administration (and was the official language until 1948). Guernésiais is another variety of Norman and often used during the war again. Today unfortunately it is dying out and only about 2% of the population speak it.

Q. How long does it take to get there?

A. Despite their "exotic-ness", the Channel Islands are actually very easy to get to. There is an airport on each island and it is also well-connected by ferry services. It takes between 45 minutes to 1h 30 to fly from the UK to Jersey or Guernsey with airlines such as Loganair, BlueIslands, Easyjet and Aurigny. By sea, you can catch ferries from Poole or Portsmouth in the UK to Jersey which take between 4 to 10 hours, or also from St Malo in France which is just 1.5 hours. To get to Guernsey, there is a ferry from Poole which takes around 3 hours.

Channel Island FAQs

From freshly caught seafood to an abundance of local produce, the Channel Islands have plenty to offer on the gastronomic front! With a number of michelin-starred restaurants in Jersey and several small artisan restaurants and cafes in Guernsey and neighbouring Sark, it offers lots of opportunities to any foody! Here are some of the tasty treats on offer around the islands;

Ormer Casserole -  a tasty casserole dish made with ormers (a type of shellfish), pork belly, carrots, shallots and plenty of that famous Guernsey butter!

Guernsey Gâche -  a sweet fruit loaf made with lashings of butter (can you see the theme?), raisins, sultanas and cherries. You will find this served in most cafes around the island of Guernsey.

Jersey Wonders -  a sweet snack similar to a doughnut but without a filling, traditionally made by Jersey housewives as the tide went out.

Jersey Royal Potatoes -  due to Jersey's favourable climate and rich soils, potatoes like this cannot be grown anywhere else. They are sweet and slightly nutty in taste.

Guernsey Ice Cream -  the cattle in Guernsey produce some of the finest and tasty milk and this of course produces the most wonderful ice cream! Beware though, the milk is high in fat so whilst it may taste extremely good after a day's walking, it may do some damage to your waistline!

Freshly caught Lobster -  La Sablonnerie Hotel  is a delightful little French-style restaurant on the island of Sark where you can eat the most delicious lobster in their rose-filled garden. An experience definitely worth pencilling in some time for in your day!

Eat your way around the Channel Islands!

The Isle of Wight is unique; more than 50% of the island is protected as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ( AONB ). This means that the landscape is of scientific and ecological importance, including its iconic cliffs, the long, secluded beaches, the quiet woodlands, and the rich flora in the grasslands.

As if that was not impressive enough, the United Nations declared the island and the waters around it as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2019. This means that the Isle of Wight can demonstrate that there is a balanced relationship between people and nature. This is quite special as it is only the 6th region in the United Kingdom to be given this award , making it a remarkable place to visit.

DAY 1 - Overnight flight to Great Britain.

The Trip Documents will provide guidance for airport check-in and for arrival in the British Isles. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

DAY 2 - ENGLAND . . Arrival at London Airport - Oxford - Warwickshire.

Upon arrival, clear passport control and collect your luggage. Refer to the "Arrival Instructions" in the Trip Documents for directions on where and when to meet your tour manager. During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167. Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the "Welcome Dinner." (Dinner)

DAY 3 - ENGLAND . . Stow-on-the-Wold - Stratford-Upon-Avon - Warwickshire.

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England. Gentle hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region. The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village's authentic stocks. Then it's on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting. The introductory tour includes a picture stop in front of Anne Hathaway's Cottage and entrance to the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Enjoy some free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history. Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4 - ENGLAND . . York - County Durham.

Drive north via the Nottingham area. Around lunch time, arrive in the historic city of York and spend the afternoon exploring the sights that interest you. "The Shambles" is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants. York also boasts the most complete example of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views. Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5 - ENGLAND . . Hadrian's Wall & SCOTLAND . . Jedburgh - Edinburgh.

A morning drive takes you to Hadrian's Wall, a fascinating Roman monument nearly 2,000 years old. Stop at Chester’s Roman Fort to study a section of the 70-plus mile structure at a closer range. Shortly after crossing the border into Scotland, reach Jedburgh where you will be treated to an English Tea with cakes and finger sandwiches. Following tea, use your free time in Jedburgh to tour the Mary Queen of Scots House, see Jedburgh Abbey, or do some shopping at the Woollen Mill. A late afternoon arrival at your Edinburgh hotel provides time to freshen up and relax. Dinner is independent, or join the optional Scottish Dinner excursion (see Optional Excursions). (Breakfast, English Tea)

DAY 6 - SCOTLAND . . Edinburgh.

Start the day with a guided tour of Edinburgh. Afterward, a good place to spend your free time is along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town. As you walk past the classic old houses, you may wish to visit one of the unique attractions such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Castle, Writer's Museum, Gladstone's Land (the oldest standing house in Edinburgh), Museum of Childhood, or the high-tech Our Dynamic Earth Museum. Edinburgh offers a variety of options for tonight's independent dinner. [ During the first two weeks of August, Image Tours includes attendance to the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular show by military bands, performed outside the castle ]. (Breakfast)

DAY 7 - SCOTLAND . . Gretna Green & ENGLAND . . Liverpool.

The morning stop will be at the Old Blacksmith’s Shop in the border town of Gretna Green, which became well known for “run-away weddings” officiated by the blacksmith. Starting in 1754, English couples would cross the border to be married under the liberal terms of the Scottish laws. Continuing south from Gretna Green, travel back into England and on to Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles. A 4:00 p.m. arrival at your Liverpool hotel provides time to explore and shop. Your tour manager will offer an optional Magical Mystery Tour excursion (see Optional Excursions) highlighting landmarks made famous by the Beatles. Dinner is independent tonight so that you may choose to dine at the hotel or at one of the pubs, restaurants or live music venues along Mathew Street. Here you will find the replicated Cavern Club, where the Beatles regularly played during their early years. (Breakfast)

DAY 8 - WALES . . Snowdonia - Caernarfon - Ferry from Holyhead & IRELAND . . Dublin.

This day is devoted to the sweeping landscape of Northern Wales. After a morning stop in Betws-y-Coed, continue through the thick pine forest into Snowdonia National Park, a mountainous region with rough but beautiful terrain. At Caernarfon, admire one of the castles built by King Edward I. A quick independent lunch will allow time to climb the castle's tower (approximately £11 admission fee). After the motor coach crosses the Menai Bridge onto the Isle of Anglesey, pause to take a picture of the town with the longest name, which we abbreviate here as Llanfair P.G. For your independent dinner, you have the choice of dining while you ferry from Wales to the Republic of Ireland or at a pub upon arrival in Dublin. (Breakfast)

DAY 9 - IRELAND . . Dublin.

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland offers much to keep you busy and entertained. Today begins your British Isles adventure. The Image Tours “Departure Instructions” will provide guidance for airport check-in. Relax on your transatlantic flight with the assurance that Image Tours has taken care of all the details.

Refer to the “Arrival instructions” for directions on where and when to meet your Tour Manager. During the motor coach transfer to your hotel in Warwickshire, make a brief stop in Oxford where Henry II established the first university of Britain in 1167. Tonight, at your hotel, get acquainted with your fellow travelers during the “Welcome Dinner.” (Dinner)

Views of the unspoiled countryside known as the Cotswolds clearly confirm you have arrived in England.  Gentle  hillsides, peaceful meadows, and charming villages with old stone buildings characterize this region.  The first destination today is Stow-on-the-Wold, offering antique shops and an opportunity to take a souvenir photo with your hands in the village’s authentic stocks.  Then it’s on to Stratford-Upon-Avon, where half-timbered houses with thatched roofs create a truly English setting.  Orientation includes a visit to the birthplace of William Shakespeare.  Following your visit, enjoy free time in Stratford-Upon-Avon or join the optional Warwick Castle excursion (see Optional Excursions) showcasing 1,000 years of history.  Return to your Warwickshire hotel for dinner.  (Breakfast, Dinner)

Drive north through the Nottingham area to the historic city of York. Arriving around lunch time, spend the afternoon exploring the popular sights. “The Shambles” is one of the most picturesque streets in Britain with unique shops, cafés and restaurants.  York also boasts the most complete set of medieval city walls still standing in England today. Walk along them for exceptional views.  Be sure to take a look inside York Minster Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in England. In the late afternoon, travel through North Yorkshire to County Durham for hotel check-in and dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

A morning drive takes you to Hadrian’s Wall, a fascinating Roman monument nearly 2,000 years old.  Stop at Chester’s Roman Fort to study a section of the 70-plus mile structure up close. Shortly after crossing the border into Scotland, arrive in Jedburgh where you will be treated to Afternoon Tea with cakes and finger sandwiches.  Following tea, use your free time in Jedburgh to tour the Mary, Queen of Scots House, see Jedburgh Abbey, or do some shopping at the Woollen Mill.  A late afternoon arrival at your Edinburgh hotel provides time to freshen up and relax before stepping out for an independent dinner.  (Breakfast, Afternoon Tea)

Start the day with a guided tour of Edinburgh. The Royal Mile, Edinburgh’s Old Town, is a wonderful place to spend your afternoon free time.  As you walk past the classic old houses, you may wish to visit one of the unique attractions such as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh Castle, Writer’s Museum, Gladstone’s Land (the oldest standing house in Edinburgh), Museum of Childhood, or the high-tech Our Dynamic Earth Museum.  Edinburgh offers a variety of options for tonight’s independent dinner.  [During the first two weeks of August, Image Tours includes attendance to the world famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular show by military bands, performed outside the castle] .  (Breakfast)

The morning stop will be at the Old Blacksmith’s Shop in the border town of Gretna Green, which became well known for “run-away weddings” officiated by the blacksmith (known as the anvil priest).  Starting in 1754, English couples would cross the border to be married under the liberal terms of the Scottish laws.  Continuing south, travel back into England  and on to Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles.  A 4:00 p.m. arrival at your Liverpool hotel provides time to explore and shop. Here you will find the replicated Cavern Club, where the Beatles were discovered.  (Breakfast)

British Isles Walking & Cycling Holidays

Spring on the Guernsey coastline | John Millen

Destination

Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search.

Great Britain, that large island in the North Sea, is surrounded by plenty of smaller isles and islets, all which offer unique opportunities to go for a splendid walking or cycling holiday in the United Kingdom. There are four main islands that form the British Isles: the Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey.

Just the fact that you are on an island gives an instant holiday feeling. On top of that, there is the special journey to reach the island; which often includes a short ferry or boat ride to increase the sensation even more. Island life is usually slow-paced and local people seem more relaxed, hospitable and are often in for a chat. Add to that a constant sea breeze, fresh seafood and stunning ocean vistas and you’ve got yourself the perfect active holiday on the British Isles.

Jersey is the biggest island of the Bailiwicks of Guernsey & Jersey, who have a separate economic and political life from Great Britain. The island has an ancient history: it was until several thousand years ago attached to mainland France with many Palaeolithic dolmans or burials from that period. It was known about in Roman times and later came under the control of the duke of Brittany during the Viking invasions. All in all, lots of historical and natural interest for the walker or cyclist.

Known for scenic cliffs and beaches, small towns oozing old world charm, and coastal defences dating from the Palaeolithic period through to the Second World War, Guernsey has been a favourite holiday destination for active travellers. After a long and turbulent history, Guernsey, similarly to Jersey and other islands, is now a British crown dependency, albeit not part of the UK or of the European Union.

According to legend, the Isle of Man was once ruled by Manannán, who would draw his misty cloak around the island to protect it from invaders. One of the principal folk theories about the origin of the name Mann is that it is named after Manannán. The ancient Romans knew of the island and called it Insula Manavi, it is uncertain though whether they conquered the island or not. However, the Manx Gaelic for the island is Ellan Vannin, which just means island of Man.

The Isle of Wight island is easily reached from London on a 2-hour train ride plus a ferry or hovercraft trip. Queen Victoria, despite ruling a quarter of the Earth and being Empress of India, elected to spend her holidays on the Isle of Wight. Here she had a little holiday cottage build called Osborne House - her little pied-à-terre. She painted and sketched the island’s nature, rode horses and went for long walks and swimming. It’s worthwhile exploring for the history and seaside scenery.

Outstanding figures of Russian culture lived and worked here. For example, young Lev Tolstoy rented an apartment in the merchant’s house in 1854-1855 in Pjatnitskaya Street. Fyodor Dostoevsky often visited his aunt in a house on Bolshaya Ordynka (known as Kumaninskoe farmstead). This area is closely associated with the names of Anna Akhmatova, the famous Russian publisher and educator Ivan Sytina. The Soviet era did not cause serious damage to Zamoskvorechye and despite modern development, here preserved historical architecture.
