After the dissolution of the alternative country band Uncle Tupelo the remaining members of the band, Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt, went on to form the beloved alternative rock band Wilco, which they based out of Chicago, Illinois, US.

Wilco has been influenced by a wide variety of musical styles including folk, rock, country, punk and experimental music and each album they make seems to reflect its unique influences. The band formed in 1994 and released their debut album “A.M.” just a year after their formation. “A.M” is the band’s most alternative country sounding album to date and songs like “Passenger Side” clearly convey the band’s influence of power pop bands like Big Star as well as country rock musicians like Neil Young and Gram Parsons.

The band’s second album “Being There” showed Wilco incorporating more experimental sounds into their music, which would continue throughout their career and would play a huge impact on their most critically acclaimed album “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”.

Not only was “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” a landmark album for Wilco that launched the band into the mainstream, but it was a landmark album for music history. Rolling Stone has labeled the album the third best album of the 2000’s and has included it on the list of top 500 albums of all time. Other publications have also highly praised the album such as Pitchfork who called it the fourth best album of the 2000’s. The album contains many of Wilco’s best songs to date including “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, “War on War”, and “Jesus, Etc.” “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” is also relevant for being the last album that guitarist Jay Bennett would perform on and the first album that would include the drummer Glenn Kotche.

After the release of Wilco’s Grammy award wining album, “A Ghost Is Born”, they would stabilize their lineup with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and avant-garde jazz guitarist Nels Cline. Although one might expect Wilco’s sound to become even more experimental with the addition of an avant-garde guitarist, in fact their next album “Sky Blue Sky” showed Wilco moving further away from experimentation and following a style that was deeply rooted in the folk and Americana genres, which conveyed inspiration from artists like The Byrds and Bob Dylan. The Grammy nominated album showed that Wilco could perfect the sound of ‘70s soft rock and broadened the diversity of Wilco’s audience.

Wilco continues to release high quality albums and have appeared on many notable television shows such as Late Show with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. In their free time the band also enjoys working on their side projects. Jeff Tweedy has been involved with the band Loose Fur, which features Jim O’Rourke and Glenn Kotche, and is also involved in the band Tweedy with his son. Pat Sansone and John Stirratt have released several albums under their soft-rock band The Autumn Defense and Nels Cline is involved with his solo material.

Wilco has become one of America’s best regarded indie rock bands and their influence can be seen all over modern music from bands such as The National. They are also well regarded for their Solid Sound Festival, which they curate and headline. Wilco has already established themselves as legends and their music continues to keep critics and fans in complete awe.

The alternative rock band Wilco is still going strong. They're not glitzy or glamorous, but they're great musicians who put on an amazing live show.

A lot of acts that sound fabulous on their CDs are disappointments live, and some even lip-synch to recorded tracks, but these guys are the real deal musically. On top of that, they keep their ticket prices low, but play for at least two hours, so you get your money's worth and then some.

Jeff Tweedy and Nels Cline get the lion's share of the attention, but every member of the band is a standout. To hear them, you'd never believe they've been playing some of these songs since the nineties. Not only does each number sound fresh and absolutely contemporary, but the band puts as much energy into each performance as if it were their first time on stage. Indeed, they seem to be enjoying the show as much as any audience member. They know their stagecraft, too, keeping the audience's attention with a light show, and witty patter from Tweedy.

Expect Wilco to roll out a fair number of their classics plus a few covers for good measure. Highlights of the evening included "Dawned On Me," "Jesus, Etc.," and "California Stars."

The critically acclaimed American alt-rockers Wilco have a huge demand to be seen live in the UK as they have amassed a cult-like following for their unique brand of soulful indie/folk rock.

The Grammy award winners have been consistently released solid material since their debut album 'A.M' in 1995. Despite having not achieved great commerciality in the UK (their highest chart position to date remains #30) the crowd compensate this with enthusiasm. From the singalong to opening track 'Less Than You Think' you would imagine it was a #1 smash hit. This level of interaction continues for 'Art of Almost' thanks to the rapport that Wilco quickly builds with the crowd.

The band conducts themselves with a mannerism that sits well with the British audience. There is no showmanship or brash audacity likened to some otherAmerican rockers, Wilco instead prefer to stand centre stage and allow their music to tell the stories. Stopping only briefly to thank the crowd, they run through an extensive set that draws from all varieties of their albums and leaves the crowd contented and impressed by this humble, sincere rock outfit.

These guys are an astonishing act to see live. Consummate professionals with excellent songs, incredible musicianship and a wonderful rapport with their audience, Wilco have zero rock and roll pretension and all of the "big show" quality you expect from a legend. Best of all they always have new stuff to mix in with their extensive back catalogue. Few artists can boast such a deep base of good songs to pull from. Wilco plays a great show, up there with the best I've seen. Bruce Springsteen and George Clinton are the only artists that give this same value.

The shows were great.Each night they changed the set list up a little with 5 to 8 different songs that they only played once,the rest of the sets were basically the same.Each night started with the same song off there latest LP,Normal American Kids.The venue is incredible,The Theater At The Ace Hotel in downtown L.A.Theater district.You can't go wrong seeing any act in these renovated old vaudeville theaters.If your a Wilco fan you'll really enjoy the show or rather shows

The band never fails to disappoint. About 2.5 hours of delicious Wilco, but this time the band is a bit nostalgic and cracks out some of the oldies like from Mermaid Avenue. Jeff says he's trying something new, introducing the songs and he doesn't like it! They play 2 encores for this first night of the 2015 tour and do a little acoustic living room jam of Misunderstood. WOW! See you next time boys.

Let's just drop any pretense or superlative filled narrative and cut right to the bottom line: Wilco is the world's greatest rock band. Period. Sampling from their entire back catalog and the current Ode to Joy they mesmerized the Heinz Hall audience for over 2 hours. And it was indeed a joy to be sitting in the Orchestra Pit right in front of the amazing Nels Cline!

Seen them three times now as of yesterday, and get blown away every time. I don't think there will ever be a time that I won't go watch them.

Jeff tweedy is usually good for some great banter, but this time their set was so dense that, according to the man himself "we don't have time to talk because we are trying to stuff so much music into your ears.

Strong showing from these hometown heroes - set list covered a wonderful stretch of albums, focused on more recent efforts and a teaser for Wilco Schmilco during the main set, then a lot of classics from their 90s and early 00s efforts during the two encores. All in a beautiful venue with an adoring crowd.

Amazing show, as usual. As Tweedy admitted, possibly the best London gig they ever had. This time around, audience was somehow awake and actually took part into the show.

Glenn was amazing and Pat Sansone could actually play floss if he was asked to. Can't wait for next gig!

Great show and the impromptu acoustic set encore was amazing. The venue has great sound and Wilco puts on an amazing show. My only critique is for the opener Kurt Vile or maybe their sound because they didn't sound as good as Wilco. That said I enjoyed this show very much.

Wilco Announces Fall 2023 U.S. Tour

Wilco has announced a fall 2023 U.S. tour. The newly announced crop of dates, set to follow the Chicago indie heroes’ lengthy European outing, will keep frontman Jeff Tweedy and company on the road in the States from the end of September through the end of October.

The Wilco 2023 fall tour is due to feature a three-night stint at The Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles (10/4, 10/5, 10/6) and two nights at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre (10/17, 10/18) as well as dates in Texas, Missouri, Colorado, and more. The upcoming tour follows the release of Wilco’s most recent album, 2022’s Cruel Country . Earlier this year, Wilco appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers to perform the Cruel Country track “ Tired of Taking It Out On You “.

Shortly after Wilco’s fall tour, frontman Jeff Tweedy will release his third book, World Within A Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music . Out November 7th via Dutton ,  World Within A Song is built around the 50-plus songs that changed Tweedy’s life. ​​Additionally, Tweedy will embark on a run of solo dates in June and July, including a four-night stand in Brooklyn.

Wilco, Sleater-Kinney Announce Co-Headlining Tour

Wilco and Sleater-Kinney will be co-headlining a tour this summer.

Following Wilco’s North American and European spring tour dates in support of  Ode to Joy , the two bands will link up for a tour of outdoor amphitheaters and venues across the U.S.

The It’s Time Summer 2020 co-headlining tour will kick off Thursday, August 6th at the First Interstate Center for the Arts in Spokane, Washington. The run includes a show at Colorado’s legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, as well as a final show in Wilco’s hometown of Chicago.

Additionally, Jeff Tweedy has announced two solo shows at Chicago’s Vic Theatre on Friday, May 15th and Saturday, May 16th. Tickets for all newly announced shows will be on sale this Friday, March 13th at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Wilco released their latest album  Ode to Joy in October, marking their first full-length album since 2016’s  Schmilco . The band’s label, dBpm Records, recently unveiled a Daniel Johnston vinyl-only live album titled  Chicago 2017 , featuring recordings from the cult artist’s final tour.

Sleater-Kinney released  The Center Won’t Hold  last August. Shortly before the album’s release, long-time drummer Janet Weiss announced her departure from the band.

Wilco Announce 2024 Spring and Summer Tour Dates

Including dates in Chicago, New York City, and Toronto

Wilco have mapped out a quick run of spring and summer dates for 2024, titled “Tour to Infinity.”

The band will first spend a month in Australia, hitting Canberra, Queensland, Melbourne, and Sydney throughout March. Then, North American dates begin in June, kicking off in Chicago before the band hits Raleigh, New York, and more. Leah Senior, Cut Worms, and Katie Cruel will be rotating in support. Wilco will also host their annual Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA at the end of June.

Wilco Announce 2022 North American Tour, Share Video for New Song: Watch

Wilco have shared another new song from their forthcoming album Cruel Country , a track titled “Tired of Taking It Out on You.” The band has also announced a string of summer and fall tour dates in North America. Check out “Tired of Taking It Out On You” and the full tour itinerary below.

Wilco announced Cruel Country at the end of April, sharing “Falling Apart (Right Now)” with the news. In a press release, bandleader Jeff Tweedy shared a statement about “Tired of Taking It Out on You”:

I’ve realized over the years that a lot of the songs I’ve written have worked as reminders to myself to pay attention to various things. Sometimes I think I’ve figured out how the world works in some small way, and I worry I’ll forget it if I don’t sing it back to myself occasionally. This song, I believe, is going to come in handy for just that purpose. I’m a person who needs to stay alert to how I’m treating others when I’m not feeling my best. And now that I mention it, when I look around, it seems like a lot of us have been taking things out on each other when we would be better served striving for understanding and empathy. I’m just trying to be honest with myself, and I guess I’m hoping if this song can help me focus on that, maybe someone else could find it useful in the same way.

Before heading across the Atlantic for a European tour, Wilco will headline their annual Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts, which will also be livestreamed for the first time. We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Wilco review – venerated band remain startlingly brilliant alt-rock greats

02 Kentish Town Forum, London Jeff Tweedy is initially a little distant with his devoted audience, but the chemistry between the group soon ignites

W ilco, after 29 years, hold a special place in the hearts of the people for whom it’s all about the music, man. The air of veneration in a packed Forum is palpable, even if leader Jeff Tweedy seems not to welcome it. After one fan shouts out his appreciation, Tweedy murmurs into the mic, not aggressively, but not without a degree of sarcasm: “This is the part of the show I enjoy, where I get to speak to each of you individually.”

For the first half of this two-hour gig, it’s a little like watching an expensively assembled football team roll over some lesser opposition: everything is plainly brilliant, everyone knows exactly what they are doing, every element is in its place, but it also feels a little inevitable, and because of that just a little uninvolving. It’s not boring – these are fantastic songs, played fantastically well – more that this is what Wilco do. The band just play; Tweedy makes no effort to communicate.

But then, at the midpoint, something changes, with Bird Without a Tail/Base of My Skull, from last year’s Cruel Country album. What starts as folk rock gradually evolves, and the communication between the sextet starts to spark and burn. The interaction between the three guitarists – Tweedy, the excellent Nels Cline, and Patrick Sansone – dazzles, and the song soars. It’s entrancing – dramatic without being aggressive.

From then on, it’s like watching Brazil in 1970: blimey, this lot are startlingly brilliant. Tweedy relaxes, and the band intensify. When they play Misunderstood, from their breakthrough second album Being There, the crowd take over from Tweedy to roar back the line: “You still love rock’n’roll.” Evicted, from the forthcoming album Cousin, gets a cheer of recognition.

Support act Courtney Marie Andrews comes on for the encores, but she leaves before the dazzling finale of Spiders (Kidsmoke), its motorik pulse a foundation for screes of noise from Cline and Tweedy that resolve into a crushing riff. Towards the end the band go silent, and Tweedy directs the crowd to keep time by clapping, then to sing that riff. They do so, in unison, before the band come crashing back in to claim their rightful plaudits.

If there was ever a festival made for James Taylor & His All-Star Band at this juncture of his 50-year career, it’s Day on the Green . The singer will perform at wineries in Queensland (Sirromet Wines in Mount Cotton), and New South Wales (Bimbadgen in the Hunter Valley, and Centennial Vineyards in Bowral) across April 2024. Taylor will be accompanied by Aussie pair Josh Pyke and Ella Hooper .

Taylor is also playing his own headline shows. After selling out dates in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, new shows have been added in those cities. A Live Nation pre-sale begins February 9 while general on-sale starts February 12.

After a new mixtape, charting singles and landmark Boiler Room set, drum’n’bass lifers Chase & Status celebrated a huge 2023. This year, the British duo will bring the party to Australia and New Zealand on a sold-out co-headlining tour with Australia’s very own Luude. They’re notably playing RAC Arena in Perth, on top of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Initially slated to appear in Australia in November 2023, Beth Orton  rescheduled her Australian tour to April 2024 and added an extra show in Tasmania. The folk musician will now embark on a four-date run with performances in Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane from April 24 to April 30, with tickets for the original cities still valid for the rescheduled dates. Elephant Gym isn’t the result of a random band name generator; “elephant” refers to the Taiwanese math rock band’s bass-led grooves, while “Gym” denotes the “agility” of their rhythm. The trio will perform their technical and idiosyncratic instrumentals at three shows on the Australian east coast for the first time this April, supporting sleepmakeswaves.

Sadly, Groovin The Moo is no longer going ahead this year – but many of the artists who would have played the touring festival will still be forging ahead with their own Australian headline shows. Singer-songwriter Claire Rosinkranz, Wu-Tang Clan legend GZA (performing a set dubbed ‘Liquid Swords Live’) and Stephen Sanchez will all perform headline shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.

Cult-favourite mathcore/hardcore/metal band Botch from Tacoma, Washington reunited last year more than two decades after their split – and now they’re embarking on their first-ever Aussie tour. The jaunt will include two dates in Melbourne and Sydney apiece as well as shows in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

Guitarist David Knudson has promised Botch will go all out: “We don’t want to half-ass it…we want to be fucking tight as we ever were, if not tighter. We don’t want to disappoint a fan that’s never seen us live. So you know, it’s all in or nothing.”

K-pop girl group aespa will bring all the dra-ma-ma-ma down under for two stops of their SYNK: Parallel Line tour. The four-piece of Karina , Giselle , Winter and NingNing will perform at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on August 31 and head to Melbourne for the Rod Laver Arena two days later. In what will be their first trip Down Under since 2017, Iron Maiden are poised to bring The Future Past tour to stadiums in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne next September.

To announce Thirty Seconds To Mars ’ Seasons World Tour, Jared Leto pulled a massive stunt: scaling the Empire State Building . US-based homegrown rap phenom The Kid LAROI ‘s return to Australia was supposed to take place in February, but it was postponed in December , with the Gamilaroi star calling February “logistically impossible”. Instead, he’ll fill stadiums around the country in October with tracks from his freshly released debut album ‘The First Time’. Passenger’s first Australian tour in six years also serves as a celebration of his 2012 album ‘All The Little Lights’, which received an anniversary edition last year. This jaunt will feature Josh Pyke as supporting act and, notably, two shows at the Sydney Opera House (one of which is already sold out).

If you look at the pop charts for any given week in the 1980s, chances are Kim Wilde was on it. The ‘Kids in America’ singer is still performing, on a break from her new life as a gardener, and will play a whirlwind Australian tour this October. Wilde will begin in Brisbane on October 17, before heading through Tweed Heads, Sydney, Wollongong, Perth, Adelaide and finishing in Melbourne October 26.

The Buzzcocks , progenitors of “love punk” and pop punk before it even existed, are still going strong almost 50 years after their formation. With Steve Diggle on vocals, replacing the late Pete Shelley, the band will return to Australia for seven shows in late October to early November. The Buzzcocks will begin on the Gold Coast on October 24, before travelling through Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle, Newcastle, Sydney and finishing in Melbourne on November 2.

PinkPantheress was once an anonymous beatmaker going viral on TikTok – she’s anything but anonymous now, as she comes to Australia for the first time promoting her debut album ‘Heaven’. Between opening for Coldplay , the 22-year-old Brit will headline shows at Melbourne’s Festival Hall (October 29) and Horden Pavilion in Sydney on November 5.

Coldplay will bring their ‘Music of the Spheres’ tour to Australia’s east coast at the end of a more than two-year stretch. The pop juggernauts have already sold 9 million tickets – the most for any tour in history – and are set to play eight stadium shows in Melbourne and Sydney after playing in Perth in 2023.

Irish singer-songwriter Hozier will tour Down Under for the first time since 2019 this November, supporting his 2023 album ‘Unreal Unearth’ with a nation-wide arena sojourn. Hozier will kick off in Perth on November 6, before heading through Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. He will also play regional areas Torquay and the Hunter Valley as part of Summersalt festival.

Self-deprecating superstar James Blunt is returning to Australian stages for the first time in over six years in November 2024. The ‘You’re Beautiful’ singer will begin a five-date arena tour at Brisbane’s Riverstage on November 21, before heading through Sydney’s ICC Super Theatre (November 23), Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena (November 24), Adelaide’s Entertainment Centre Theatre (November 25) and Perth’s Red Hill Auditorium (November 28).

Aussie Depeche Mode fans are an incredibly patient bunch. The last time the British synth-pop titans toured the country was in 1994, meaning nearly three decades have passed since they last paid us a visit. But good things come to those who wait, and it seems there is a glimmer of hope for those hoping to catch the band Down Under.

In March 2023, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan told an Italian blog that the band were eyeing “as-yet-unannounced dates in Asia and Australia” as part of a touring run that would lead into 2024. The band have toured the world in support of their latest album, ‘Memento Mori’ , and a trip to Australia to cap off the jaunt seems more likely than ever.
