Kamloops Winery Tours - A Delicious New Experience

Kamloops winery tours are for those who like wine and enjoy new taste experiences?

Exploring these new wineries is the newest and perhaps fastest growing activity in the Sun Peaks Resort and surrounding Kamloops area - which is great because we both love Sun Peaks and we both love wine!

If beer is more your thing, there are also great craft brewery tours available.

While the southern Okanagan 'Wine Country' wineries have already become world famous for their fantastic wines over the past number of years, the Thompson Shuswap area hasn't been thought of as a wine region.

Until now that is.

Enter several couples and families who both have a passion for excellent wines and who had a vision for developing the wine tourism industry in the Kamloops area, where the climate and soil also produce great conditions for growing certain types of vines.

With both new Kamloops winery tours opening their doors to the wine-loving public in 2013, self-drive and even luxurious escorted wine tours from Sun Peaks are now available seasonally and are an easy and enjoyable trip from Sun Peaks Resort.

There are now four new wineries that make up the Kamloops Wine Trail, with more expected to follow given the early success of these initial wineries:  Privato Vineyard and Winery ,   Harper's Trail Winery and Monte Creek Ranch Winery .  There is also  Sagewood Winery  which is a 4th Kamloops winery but isn't part of the official "Kamloops Wine Trail".

All are uniquely different, but all share the desire for showing locals and visitors from around the world that Kamloops and the Thompson Shuswap area is ready to become an award-winning producer of world-class wines.

We would be happy to put together a custom winery tour package for you, including a stay in our Best Sun Peaks condo in Stone's Throw at Sun Peaks Resort or our larger but equally beautiful Trapper's Landing townhouse , and a fully escorted, luxurious, half or full-day of touring Kamloops and/or Shuswap wineries .

Kamloops Wine Trail – A Weekend Wine Tour

In partnership with Sun Peaks Resort , Tourism Kamloops , and Destination BC , I toured the three wineries that make up the Kamloops Wine Trail:  Privato Vineyard & Winery , Harper’s Trail Winery , and Monte Creek Ranch Winery . I have also included a fourth, Sagewood Winery , to cover all wineries in the city.

Privato Vineyard & Winery

Our first stop was Privato Vineyard & Winery, owned by John and Debbie Woodward, for a wine tasting and tour and a picnic lunch in the beautiful gardens, provided by The Art We Are .

In the winter, drop by and chop down your own Christmas tree at John and Debbie’s other business, Woodward Christmas Tree Farm,  enjoy a wagon ride and bonfire…and of course do a wine tasting!

Harper’s Trail Winery

Our second stop of the day was at the very first winery to open in Kamloops, Harper’s Trail Winery , owned by Ed and Vicki Collett. Set in a beautiful location, bring a picnic lunch, and enjoy wine with your lunch on their large patio area.

Monte Creek Ranch Winery

Driving through Kamloops, you must stop at Monte Creek Ranch Winery for a tour and lunch. It’s just off the highway heading east, about 10 minutes from the city centre.

Maeghan is a great host and her love for the winery and farm-fresh local foods clearly shows. Marc hosted us for the wine tasting in a private room and shared with us the history of Kamloops, the winery, and why each wine is named as it is. I won’t spoil the fun but be prepared to learn more about Billy Miner the train robber.

Paired with the wine tasting, we enjoyed local artisan meat and cheese platter made from an assorted charcuterie, local cheeses, and preserves made in their kitchen. As we walked into the tasting room, guests were being served fresh-made tomato basil soup from the Terrace Restaurant. We followed our noses and Maeghan was gracious and included soup in our pairing. The restaurant is outdoors on the patio, so weather-depending, make sure you stay for a meal and wine overlooking the river.

Sagewood Winery

Though not part of the official Kamloops Wine Tour, I wanted to include Sagewood Winery in my article and highlight all four of our wineries. Founded in 2005, Sagewood offers many varieties of wines to choose from. You can find them at the Farmer’s Markets on Saturdays as well as visit their tasting room on weekends.

There is much more to each winery than I have described in this brief overview. Each winery is unique, offers something different, and have won many awards for their wines—you’ll need to experience each one yourself. Book a wine tour through one of the various companies in Kamloops, or enjoy a self-guided tour at your own pace.

Experience BC's newest wine experience, the Kamloops Wine Trail. Commence your journey taking a ride along the Thompson River on the historic McClure Ferry, a quick trip that offers a unique waterside view of the riverbanks and the local wildlife's natural habitat. Your tour will then take you to three wineries that capture the minerality and crisp acidity that is becoming known to the area. Privato Winery

The inspiration behind the name Privato comes from the Italian word meaning private which aptly describes the winery's idyllic setting. A hidden gem in the heart of BC's exciting Thompson Valley wine region, Privato is a family owned boutique winery dedicated to the production of premium Burgundian styled wines.  In 2019, Woodward Cider Co. opened at Privato Winery.  Cider tastings are available on weekends & holidays only. 

Monte Creek Ranch Winery Forging a new era of exploration for the Thompson Valley, Monte Creek Ranch offers the next frontier in winemaking. Just a 10 minute drive outside Kamloops City limits, Monte Creek Ranch aims to follow in the footsteps of the area's early explorers and uncover what the land can offer. Monte Creek Ranch also has an expansive full-service patio overlooking their vineyards where guests are welcome to choose items from their locally-sourced menu at their own expense.

Harper’s Trail Estate Winery Named for the cattle drive “trail” of pioneer rancher Thaddeus Harper, Harper's Trail Estate Winery is the closest winery to Kamloops. Tucked into the city outskirts on the bank of the South Thompson River, the winery sits among rolling hills of sage and grass and is home to Bighorn sheep. The backdrop of limestone, Hoodoos, and a natural spring reflect the biodiversity of this rare place. Available for tastings in May 2023 only, on weekends.  As the winery is currently for sale, future status is unknow.  Substitutions my be required should they close.

When it comes to grape growing in BC Wine Country, the producers in the Thompson Valley are living on the very edge.

The pioneers who broke ground in the industry in the Okanagan Valley were once considered the crazy ones, but went on to prove the naysayers wrong. And wine enthusiasts are very happy they did. The newest crop of boundary pushers hope to do the same.

So far, they are doing just that. The Thompson Valley may be the most northerly grape growing area within BC, but it enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and often records some of the warmest temperatures in Canada during the growing season.  

Today, there is just over 100 acres planted supplying grapes to a handful of wineries, which makes up less than one per cent of the total vineyard in BC.   Visitors will find most of them around Kamloops, the second-largest metropolitan area in the BC interior. Between winery tours, they can take in the fine dining, nightlife, and shopping.  

Outside the city, the area is an ecological wonder featuring valleys and plateaus formed by volcanic land masses and rivers. Anchored by the Thompson River, a visit to a winery can be effortlessly paired with a fishing trip, a nature walk, golf, skiing or boating expedition.  

Another attraction that’s sure not to escape your notice are the stunning rock formations known as the Hoodoos. The area also offers alpine skiing at a world-class resort known as Sun Peaks.

In the North Thompson you’ll find Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and Wells Gray Provincial Park, which features Helmcken Falls, higher than Niagara and plunging a breathtaking 141 metres down a narrow canyon.
