My friend and I decided to book a last minute Trip to India to do Kanckanzonza goechala trek base Camp in 2019. and turned out to be a great decision because we had an absolutely amazing experience! From the very beginning we had lots of questions about the india trip and itinerary and Subash Tamang the owner was always quick with answers so we felt comfortable with everything.

The team from Ashmita Trek and Tours Company has done a marvellous job to ensure that my safety, logistics and lodging was organised properly during our Trek.

The guides were helpful, friendly and were always on the lookout for my well-being which I deeply appreciate. All in all we had a wonderful time and I could honestly recommend these guys to anyone interested in Sikkim Trek. Only hope I come back in the near future and do another trek!

Srashv, United Kingdom - April 20, 2019

We are a group of friends who had the opportunity of trek to Dzongri - Goechala in Sikkim. Mr. Sangay was our guide. We were given a warm welcome with garlands after our arrival at the airport. We are accommodated at good hotel in Yuskom. Judging the groups capabilities Sange proposed slight changes to the program, which proved to be good in the end. He and his team took good care of us and had a good overview of the well being of each member of our group. The cook of the group made every effort to provide a good variety of food over the days. Sangay was encouraging every member of the group and made sure that all of us stepped on the finish line. He organised a celebration after returning to Goechala. Composed, coupled with knowledge and experience, Mr. Sangay is a good recommendation as a guide.

Enroute you cross Temperate Broad-Leaved Forest, Mixed Coniferous/Sub-Alpine Forest and stand on the verge of land covered only by Alpine Scrub and Grass. Needless to say that this diverse bio reserve falling under the Group 12 Himalayan Moist Temperate Forest is filthy rich by a vast range of flora and fauna. The months of April –May are ripe to visit this sanctuary to see various species of rhododendrons lit brightly all around the corners.

We have split the long and steep climb from Tsokha to Dzongri at Phedang. Staying a night at this forest covered beautiful campsite will definitely help you reach comfortably to Dzongri next day.

Bird species and wildlife on Dzongri trek:

Visiting bird watchers will find this place most appealing considering the fact that this National Park forms part of the Important Bird Area (IBA) network  which contains around 550 species and subspecies of avi-fauna. Some of such species include some flamboyant high altitude pheasants like Tragopan pheasants and Blood pheasants, Tibetan Snow Cock, Tibetan Horned owl, Hill Partridge, Forest Eagle, Falcons, Hawks and even some Lammergeiers. This National Park is also home to a wide range of animals including Red panda, Snow Leopard, Common Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Lesser cats, Mountain fox, Kasturi Mriga/musk Deer, Nayan/ Great Tibetan sheep, Bharal/Blue Sheep, Shapi/Himalayan Tahr/, Barking Deer, Martens and Pikas to name few.

Which season to choose for Dzongri trek?

The first being the Spring during April and May – the blooming season. The later season is combined in Fall and Winter, continued from October to February. This tenure boasts  cloud-free weather and offers spectacular mountain views.

Season: Being in the Eastern Himalayas this area observes longer monsoon. Clouds start to hover from April and prolong till October beginning. There are two distinct seasons when this year trek is particularly beautiful:

1) Spring/Summer (Apr/May) trek during Rhododendron bloom: April and May is spring time,  blooming time. Flowering starts as early as March in the lower elevation, and gradually towards end of spring on higher altitude. Rhododendron and Giant Magnolia are two most famous along with several other wild flower species. Cloudy or misty atmosphere is common during Spring. Though clear mountain views are not uncommon, specially during morning. For bird watching this is certainly a better season to visit.

rhododendron-bloom-on-the-way-to-phedang

2) Fall/Winter (Oct – Jan) treks for clear weather: From October to end of November. In the beginning of October clouds start moving out from this region and weather becomes clearer. November is  particularly known for its crystal clear views of the mountains. From end of November it becomes very pretty cold at Dzongri. Also being  high altitude the chances of snowfall can’t be neglected during late December and January.

Can I attempt Dzongri trek as my first hiking/trekking on the Himalayas?

The itinerary of the trek is planned in such a way that being a beginner you don’t find it too stressful. While ascending to Dzongri, the trek day duration is not more than 4/5 hours covering maximum of 7/8 Km a day or less. However, it is always better if you have prior hiking/trek experience(s) at least in Sahyadris or in Western Ghats or perhaps on any trail This is NOT a Difficult but a Moderate grade trek and we do encourage first timers on this trail. But not to forget that this trail takes you to an altitude of about 14000 ft. To minimise the risk (as that any high altitude Himalayan trekking) you must have the following:

A healthy physical condition [as well as mental; You need to adjust and share on mountains :-)] without any known issues related to heart or lungs. Must be in a fitness training schedule . Your focus should be achieving more cardio vascular output through a regular aerobic training. A minimum of 2 months training is a must that you can walk comfortably on the slope. People will find it easier who are already following a routine. It is it highly advised that you follow a minimum of 6 months routine (weekly 4/5 days of training for an hour or more) if you are not living an active life at present. To know more on how to prepare, click here. Specialised personal gears like waterproof trekking shoes, warm jacket, wind cum waterproof jacket are must. To read on how to choose the right gear click here. And last but not the least, you need reliable and experienced support team who know every corner of the trail. In high altitude an unexpected weather can increase the risk many fold. Trekkers who wish to go independently must have an experienced freelance guide and his team to provide support and guidance that you are safely back to trek base.

Dzongri trek temperatures:

Sikkim Darjeeling and surrounding region is known for its moist weather, almost year around.  At higher altitude  dampness adds on top of the natural cold conditions.

Usually the minimum temperature of a place is attained early in the morning, 3 to 5 am.  During Dzongri trek, there are couple of days (one being at Phedang and the other to Dzongri) when you have to leave camp early in the morning.  In spring expect the minimum temperature to be around 0°C  at Dzongri. In October the temperatures will be similar and temperatures plummet further in late October/November. During peak winter from late December temperature may go down as low as -10°C at Dzongri. Do account strong wind at times which in turn can make you feel colder. This is the wind chill factor and feels like temperature can be as lower than the actual. Temperature inside tent will be around 10°C warmer than that of outside.  During daytime the temperature will be cooler and can vary from 10°C to 25°C depending upon season and altitude.

Access to Dzongri trek base, Yuksom:

You need to reach NJP (by train) or Bagdogra (by flight) around the city Siliguri in West Bengal for your Darjeeling or Sikkim trips. Kolkata is well connected to Siliguri through flights and overnight trains and busses (road from Kolkata to Siliguri is not in good condition and may take 15/16 hours!) .

Do carefully check for the latest arrival timings on Day 1 of the itinerary (latest by 10 am) before you book your train or flight tickets.

We will arrange a pickup and drop from NJP/Siliguri to Yuksom and back. This will be shared by the team members on actual basis and you pay directly to driver/owner on spot. Typically a Tata Sumo/Mahindra Maxx type Jeep charges ₹ 6000 one side which can accommodate 6 to 8 people. Tempo Traveller type vans are not available in this route. This cost is NOT included in the TREK FEE .

For details on how to reach nearest railways station/airport and move to trek base independently/public transportation check the details in GETTING THERE TAB .

Permit requirements to enter Sikkim and treks in Sikkim including Dzongri trek:

Sikkim has some restrictions regarding travelling and special permits are a must to obtain. It is a good space to write the details regarding the different permits and fees required by the administration. Also we hope that this section will help those people who want to reach independently to Sikkim. Indians may skip this section if you don’t have a travel plan specifically in North Sikkim.

(A) For Indian Nationals: Trekking permit is required inside Kanchendzongha National park and the local police verification at Yuksom police outpost. Two recent passport size photos, One personal photo ID card with address proof in it (Aadhar/Driving Licence/Voter ID/Passport) along with photocopies of the same are to be submitted along with a self declaration at Yuksom police outpost. Below is a handy guide for those having plan for additional holidays/destinations in Sikkim. Even Indians need Protected Area Permit (PAP) for visiting North Sikkim or Nathu La. http://www.sikkimtourism.gov.in/Webforms/General/faq.aspx

(B) For Foreign Nationals:

Any foreigner (some relaxation to Nepalese and Bhutanese citizens) will require Inner Line Permit which is recently renamed as Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter the boundary of Sikkim.

http://www.sikkimtourism.gov.in/Webforms/General/Essential%20Information/Entry.aspx

  • Nationals of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Nigeria and China can only apply for ILP/RAP through Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi.
  • Any other foreign national’s with the strength of valid Passport and Indian visa can obtain the ILP (RAP), Free of cost, at the below check points while entering Sikkim.

1) Assistant Director– Tourism Department , Melli, Near Melli Police Check Post, South Sikkim, Mobile No: 9775453611, 03595-248536, PLS NOTE: ILP issuing time is from 8 am to 8 pm everyday (Though we struggled to keep them stay after 6 pm!)- On the way to West Sikkim (Yuksom, Pelling, Hilley, Uttarey etc) 2) Assistant Director, Tourism Department, Sikkim Tourism Office, Rangpo , East Sikkim phone no: 03592-240818 – On the way to Gangtok and East/North Sikkim.

  • If you produce a proper itinerary (additionally if any supporting booking documents) then the authority will usually issue an ILP up to 30 days initially. It can be extended to another 30 days but you to get an extension we need to exit Sikkim and apply again when you re-enter.
  • Travellers who arrive initially in Darjeeling (state of West Bengal) has to get the permit from the above two check posts. There is shorter route from Darjeeling to Jorethang via Jamuney (40 Km, 2 hours maximum)  but foreigner’s are not allowed to enter Sikkim along this road. You have to go via Darjeeling – Jorbanglow – Teesta route.
  • You may obtain an ILP online, but that doesn’t make much sense. This is a document valid only when it is signed physically in any of the above two offices. It takes 10/15 minutes to process the ILP at Melli/Rongpo with the strength of your valid passport and Indian visa.

Foreign national tourists who wish to trek to Dzongri/Dzongri, Singalila/Phoktey Dara (Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary), Round Singalila Dzongri (Uttarey to Dzongri) will require an additional permit called Protected Area Permit (PAP, often referred as Trekking Permit) . This is issued to a minimum group of 2 persons or more from the following office on strength of signed and valid  ILP/RAP. Adventure Cell of Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, Govt. of Sikkim, Gangtok http://www.sikkimtourism.gov.in/Webforms/General/pdf/RAP.pdf

( Note: Green Lake trek in North Sikkim requires Alpine Mountaineering Expedition permit, which in turn needs more approvals, time and high expenses. Total 5 different permits are needed from Sikkim state and Delhi for both Indian and foreign nationals.)

If you (foreign nationals) wish to book Dzongri/Phoktey Dara/Dafeybhir trek or any other with us (HT) in Sikkim then:

  • We will require at least one additional day to process the PAP/Trekking Permit. This can’t be processed in advance and we can only apply once we receive your signed copy of ILP. This means that you can’t start the trek very next day you enter Sikkim. We would recommend a couple of days in advance.
  • Tourist’s who are having plan to visit other places in Sikkim can obtain the ILP as mentioned and send the same to us for processing the Trekking Permit.
  • We charge an additional Rs 3000 as Service Charge per person to process the Trekking Permit and to counter the differential of various permit fees inside Kanchendzongha National park for Non Indian nationals. It is indeed expensive to send someone to Gangtok for processing the Trekking Permit and get it back at the respective trek base like Yuksom, Hilley, Uttarey etc.

In simple words it is not difficult to get the required permits to trek inside Sikkim (apart from Green Lake trek) if you (minimum of a group of 2) have couple of additional days to spend in Sikkim before the trek; There are plenty of these places  🙂

Do carry multiple copies (both hard and soft versions) of your recent passport size photos and photocopies of your documents (Passport/Visa/ILP) to avoid a showstopper on mountains!

The earlier you reach Jorethang the chances are higher to get this service. From Jorethang it is another 3 hours journey to Yuksom. Often It is difficult to reach Yuksom from NJP/Siliguri in one day.

For the treks in Sikkim and Darjeeling , one has to reach the city of Siliguri (considered the corridor to the North-East) in West Bengal.

The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), 5 Km from Siliguri and the airport Bagdogra is 10 Km.

You can fly or by train reach Siliguri from Kolkata ( good for the trekkers coming from South/central or Western India) or Delhi as per your convenience from any part within India.

Direct flights are available from New Delhi and Kolkata. All the flights to Bagdogra reaches late in the morning or early afternoon. It becomes difficult to reach the trek base like Yuksom/Hilley/Uttarey on the same day unless a car is booked (takes around 8 hours to reach). One can stay the night in Siliguri and start the travel to the trek base next morning. It is better to reach Siliguri by flight/train to Kolkata and then take an overnight train to NJP unless you are coming from northern India.

There are other trains also of which some run daily and some on particular days of week.

Avoid booking wait listed (WL) tickets in AC classes (1A/2A/3A) or Chair Car (CC). Book Sleeper class (SL)/Second Sitting class (2S) tickets which have normally more seats/berths and hence much better chance to get confirmed.

It is better to reach to the centre of Siliguri called Siliguri Junction (adjacent to Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus and Sikkim Nationalised Transport/S.N.T Bus terminus). It takes 30 minutes from Bagdogra or 15 minutes from NJP. There are hotels 5 minutes walking from NJP also.

Drive to Yuksom: 160 Km - 8/9 hours

Pickup from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) in the morning and reach the trek base Yuksom (~ 1710 m/5600 ft) which was the first capital of Sikkim. The distance is around 160 Km and may take 8 hour including a lunch break. The road goes via Teesta, Malli, Jorethang and Tashiding.

by-road-yuksom-sikkim

Yuksom is a typical small and laid-back Sikkimese town with one strip of Bazaar area in the centre. The village is spread out on the valley with Kabru peak setting the backdrop. The first king of Sikkim, His Holiness Funchook Namgyal was crowned here by His Holiness Gyalwa Latchen Chembo, the same man who brought Buddhism to Sikkim in 1641. There are quite a few hotels and lodges ranging from premium to budget type. Also there are few restaurants offering veg and non veg food in the Bazaar area. All the major mobile networks wok here and has a small internet cafe. Night stay in tourist lodge.

yuksom-bazaar-goecha-la-trek-start-point

Note: If you plan to reach Bagdogra on Day 1 and hire a reserved vehicle, arrive latest by noon. People willing to reach Yuksom independently must reach NJP latest by 7 am (detail is given above on how to reach Yuksom by public transportation). It is often handy to fly to Kolkata and take the overnight trains to NJP which reach latest by 10 am or you may fly directly to Bagdogra on Day 0. Due to ongoing road construction work between Melli and Jorethang, it takes more than 3 hours to reach Jorethang. Yuksom is another 75 Km on hilly road from here and is another 3 hours. Also you need a break (preferably a lunch break at Jorethang). Yuksom is a small stretch of Bazaar (where the lodges and restaurants are clustered) and sleeps as expected on mountains latest by 9 pm.

Trek from Yuksom to Sachen: 8 Km - 4 hours

We start our 8 days of strenuous but astonishingly beautiful trek from today. To start with an easy day, while spending time and gaining some height on the mountain for Sachen (~ 2200 m/7200 ft). Usually it takes some time in the morning to process the permit at police check post and we start around 9/9:30 am in the morning. By the time you can visit Yuksom Coronation site which is some 5/7 minutes from the bazaar area and has a small monastery adjacent to it.

small-monastery-at-yuksom-coronation-site

Have your breakfast from one of the available restaurants and then we take the left trail from the main road in Bazaar area. After crossing desolated Forest Huts and KNP Check post, locate a sign stating “Satellite phones are not allowed in this route” in the Yuksom Colony area. From here we leave the village and get into the trek trail. After leaving few last houses and a nursery we finally depart from Yuksom. The trail is typically a narrow river valley while the river is running in the gorge. We slowly ascent going through the thick vegetation of sub alpine evergreen forest of Sikkim. It runs through moss-laden forests of Oak, Spruce, Chestnut, Fir, Pines, giant Magnolias and wide variety of orchids. Shades of Green change seasonally.

towards-sachen-goecha-la-trek

Our trail now enters into Kanchendzongha National Park. This Biosphere reserve is a Botanist’s paradise and rich with exotic birds, butterflies and mammals. We have to cross 3 bridges on the river today, referred as 1st, 2nd and 3rd bridge. We continue our gradual ascent to a clearing we reach, which is our campsite of Sachen for the day. There is a Kitchen Hut built by the Forest Department on the left of the trail and the camping ground is above the trail on the right. The site is full of different bird species including Thrushes and Laughing Thrushes. It may take around 4 hours and we cover a distance of 8 Km. Camp for the night.

at-sachen-goecha-la-trek

Trek to Tsokha: 8 Km - 5/6 hours

We start gradually for first half an hour and then descend to the 4th bridge on the river Prek Chu (Chu means River in Nepali), the last of the four but most significant. Prek River coming down from Goecha La/Samity area meets Rathong Chu which is feeding from Rathong glacier someway further down. After crossing the bridge, the trail turns to left and spirals up. This is the first half of climb for today and continuous one with steady height gain.

4th-bridge-on-goecha-la-trek

We climb through the often misty forest and slowly the valley widens up on our left. Slowly climbing for an hour and half we reach at the top of this ridge and suddenly turning to right we see the Forest Bungalow of Bakhim ( ~ 2620 m/8600 ft) at our left and house with a coffee shop on the right. The Bungalow with concrete exterior and wooden interior suffered during the earthquake in 2011 but still serves the night halt for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) students. A cup of tea or coffee looking at the valley down under should not be missed. On a clear day one can see Yuksom and the hill station of Pelling from this viewpoint.

at-bakhim-looking-down-towards-yuksom

After a much needed break we start our second phase of climb for the day after our break. The trail continues to zigzag and the first noticeable Rhododendron trees appear. During spring we can see the red and the white flowers particularly in abundance. There is a short cut on the right of the main trail but it is better to stay on the well defined track. We turn right and reach a clearing in the forest. From here we continue our climb and until we reach our destination Tsokha (~ 2960 m/9700 ft) a table top on top of the hill. The camping ground of Tsokha is on the right of the trail and is a delight. The wooden Trekkers Hut is adjacent to the camping ground and well equipped with rooms and a big dinning hall. We get the first view of the snow capped mountains behind the Trekkers Hut. Magnificent Mount Pandim is standing straight along with Jopunu and Tinchenkhang.

camp-site-at-tsokha-goecha-la-trek

Tsokha used to be a settlement for the Tibetan refugees but recently the people are rehabilitated at Yuksom. There are few private guest houses but one is still operating. Also there is a monastery few turns up on the left of the trail with a shallow pond in front of it. In the afternoon it is worth to visit the monastery and the lone shop which serves tea, coffee and sells woollen clothes, gloves and shawl.

tsokha-monastery-goecha-la-trek

Tsokha has mobile networks working but not a steady one. You may talk with your near and dear ones from here if you are lucky. Total distance we cover is 8 Km and may take up to 5/6 hours. Night stay in tent.

Trek to Phedand: 6 Km - 3/4 hours

If the weather is clear we can see the sunrise on the backdrop of Mt. Pandim, standing from the camping ground. Being on the mountain for 3 days, our body is supposed to get acclimatised by this time. Today we gain significant height while most of the climb is moderately steep. The walk can be divided into 3 parts, climb till Phedang (~ 3680 m/12070 ft), then further ascent to Deorali Top (~ 4100 m/13,450 ft) and finally a gradual descent to our destination for the day Dzongri (~ 3950 m/12,950 ft). We leave Tsokha after crossing the monastery and turn right as the trail to start the steep climb for about half an hour. Then the trail is eases with paved wooden logs as rain turns it pretty muddy by the movements of Yaks and Horses. This trail is surrounded by dense Rhododendrons trees bloomed in different colour ( flowering season is mid April to mid May) and conifers. This is perhaps one of the best jungle trails on the Himalaya and takes away the tiredness of body. Often cloudy, the misty scent of the trail is unforgettable. After climbing another hour we reach to a small clearing where we take a rest and enjoy the silence of the jungle. From this point climbing for little more than an hour we reach the top of this hill, a wide open area of Phedang. There is a Kitchen hut and small sitting arrangement for the tired trekkers. The area remains cloudy mostly after midday and can be damp and cold.

Trek to Dzongri via Deorali Top: 6 Km - 3/4 hours

The trail splits from this place as the straight one goes to Dzongri and the trail on the right leads to Kokchurang. After a much needed replenishment we start for the 2nd half of our climb. The trail climbs steadily again zigzagging while we climb slowly as can can feel the altitude resulting into headache. Here the Rhododendron trees have turned it bushes aligning more horizontally. Climbing for two hours we reach the top of Deorali, a sacred place having a Chorten and prayer flags. There are spectacular views of the Sikkim mountains and its peaks from here. We start descending from this point and after crossing a clearing on a meadow we climb a small hump. From this hump we gently descend and traverse to the meadows of Dzongri. Walking around an hour we reach the Trekkers Hut and the camping side. The wooden hut consists of four rooms, a dinning hall and a separate setup for kitchen. The camping ground is on the left side of the hut along the narrow stream which flows in front of the hut. We camp or stay in the hut. Total distance is 6 Km and may take 3/4 hours. Night stay either in tent.

Exploration day at Dzongri. Climb to Dzongri top and visit Laxmi Pokhri lake

We wake up very early in the morning around 4 am and prepare to go to the top of Dzongri which is the sunrise point and offers majestic views. It is essential to climb to the Dzongri top as the hill straight in front of Dzongri restricts the views of the mountains. A good 45 minutes to an hour climb gaining a height around 200 m/650 ft will take us to Dzongri top. The panorama from Dzongri Top is simply breathtaking during sunrise when peaks are tinted in the softest of hues. It is almost an 150 degree panorama, from right Jopunu, Mt. Pandim to our left the Kabru group of peaks. Straight ahead is Kanchendzongha, the third highest peak in the world standing with massive glory. Local people offer prayers and incense of Cryptomaria Japonica shrubs to the Chorten at the top. After clicking photographs we descend to the base  for the breakfast. In the early afternoon you may walk towards Dzongri La (Dzongri Pass) on the trail to Chowrikhang, HMI (Himalayan Mountaineering Institute) base camp for couple of hours. However a round trip to Dzongri La (Dzongri Pass) will take 6/7 hours and is out of scope. Camp for the night.

Trek back to Tsokha – 12 Km – 5/6 hours

After breakfast we start our days trek and climb to Deorali first and then descent to Phedang. We continue going down till we reach our campsite Tsokha.  It should take around 5/6 hours to complete 12 Km distance.

Trek to Yuksom: 15 Km - 5/6 hours

Today is our last day on trail and we descend via Bakhim and 4th bridge. From here we climb for half an hour and then almost straight to Sachen. Then we continue retracing our path back to the town of Yuksom. It will take around 5/6 hours for a distance of 15 Km. Night stay in tourist lodge.

Drive to NJP/Bagdogga: 160 Km - 8/9 hours

In the morning take the car and drive back to NJP/Bagdogra/Siliguri. The trip ends.

P.S.: Distances and altitudes are approximate and may not be exact.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

We did winter Dzongri trek in Sikkim with Himalaya Trekkers. They arranged everything for us and we were very satisfied. The communication was fast. On the trek we had excellent team – experienced guide Ram from Yuksom and cook Chandra. The food was delicious. Even the trek base – homestay in Yuksom was gorgeous. We did this trek in February, it was challenging, but with the support of Himalaya Trekkers team, we successed .

A Guide to Hiking to Dzongri Peak in Sikkim

Himalayan Adventure of a Lifetime

yuksom to dzongri trek map

The classic trek to Dzongri peak (altitude of 13,123 feet) in West Sikkim, India , passes through magnificent rhododendron forests and culminates with the magnificent views of snow-clad peaks at Dzongri. The thrill of Dzongri, the meeting place of man and mountain gods, is an attention-grabber for sure.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Dzongri is from mid-March through April, and then from September to mid-October, so you avoid snowfall and monsoon rains. However, owing to high altitude, there is a definite possibility of the climate taking unexpected turns during any time of the year.

Getting There

Start your journey from New Delhi . Take the Indian Railways  12424/New Delhi-Dibrugarh Town Rajdhani Express for a 21-hour trip to New Jalpaiguri. From New Jalpaiguri, the best option is to hire a taxi for the six-hour trip to Yuksom, the first capital of Sikkim and base camp for the Dzongri trek.

Trek Arrangements

Yuksom is a small village in Sikkim with a population of about 150, surrounded by mountains. The open roads and views of snow-clad peaks produce an immediate contrast with the otherwise crowded roads of Delhi.

Hotels in Yuksom come cheap. Expect to share a bath. Get outfitted in Yuksom with a guide, cook, and porter and buy the supplies you'll need. The economy of Yuksom is mostly based on tourism, so the necessary logistics for the trek can be arranged locally. Alternatively, numerous travel agents in Gangtok can organize the Dzongri trek in advance.

Everyone must register at the police station at Yuksom with a valid proof of identity. Separate trekking permits are also mandatory for foreigners. The trekking permits are available at tourism offices in Gangtok or Sikkim House in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.

The trek starts from Khangchendzonga National Park in Yuksom. The trek to Dzongri is ideally five days, with one day of acclimatization at Tshoka village. However, it's possible to complete it in four days if you want to skip the acclimatization day.

Here's an overview of what to expect on each of the four trekking days.

Day 1: Yuksom-Saachen-Bakkhim-Tshokha (11 miles) -- The trek to Tshokha passes through dense tropical forests of Khangchendzonga National Park, with magnificent views of mountains peaks and the mystical music of river flowing down in the valley. The first five or six miles of the trek are fairly easy, with picturesque waterfalls, a few hanging bridges, and magnificent red and white rhododendron flowers. The last few miles are particularly strenuous; the trek has a continuous ascent with a gradient of 45 to 60 degrees right up to Tshokha. This segment of the trek takes about eight hours.

Day 2: Tshokha-Phetang-Dzongri (5 miles) -- This part of the trek can be challenging. You might start to experience symptoms of acute mountain sickness because of the altitude. A rest day at Tshokha might help with acclimatization, so consider this before deciding to skip it. The adventure in this segment is compounded by intermittent rains and frequent snowfalls. Although the trail is well-marked with wooden steps, snow can sometimes make it invisible, and you can get caught in a snowstorm on this route.

Day 3: Dzongri-Dzongri Peak-Tshokha -- This is the goal of the trek, and you won't be disappointed if the day is clear. You'll get a spectacular view of the Kangchenjunga mountain range, the highest peak of the Himalayas in India, visible from Dzongri peak.

Day 4: Tshokha-Yuksom -- Follow the same trail back from Tshokha to Yuksom.

  • Money:  Be sure to carry enough cash. Yuksom is a remote area and the ATMs are highly unreliable.
  • Medical care: Acute mountain sickness is the main cause of concern on this trek. It leads to a loss of appetite, headaches and stomach upsets. It's advisable to carry adequate medicines because there are no medical facilities available during the trek. If the problem persists, you should move to a lower altitude. Oral rehydration salts help to avoid cramps that might result from excessive water and mineral loss through sweating.
  • Clothing: The altitude of Dzongri makes it highly susceptible to unpredictable and inclement weather. Take good-quality trekking boots, sleeping bags, raincoat, and heavy woolen clothing.
  • Food: You'll need to bring ample food supplies on the trek. It's advisable to carry carbohydrate-rich foods because the low concentration of oxygen at high altitudes slows down the digestion of fats.
  • Ecological concerns: Polythene bags are banned in Sikkim. Cooperate with the authorities and dispose of all wastes in a proper place.

People suffering from Acute Heart and Lung diseases, Asthma, and High blood pressure are not recommended to take up this trek.

To complete this high-altitude trek regular exercises like running, skipping, aerobics, Zumba, and long-distance uphill trekking (4 to 5 times a week) are highly recommended. One should start making basic physical preparation at least a month before a trek. These exercises help you during the Trek.

The packing of right and comfortable clothing also makes a difference in the completion of Trek, so it is necessary to be disciplined while packing your clothing for the trip. You can contact us for help with clothing choice and packing!

During the Trek, we provide a basic medicine Kit which includes Medicine for High Altitude sickness, Headache, Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Common Cold, etc. All of our medicine is scientific medicine purchased in India, however, we advised you to bring your small medicinal kit for the trip if possible.

1. A common tendency among young blood and beginners is to show enthusiasm by walking fast with excitement. Even the experienced sometimes try to show off by walking fast, this is soon exhausting and not recommended. Walk slow - warm up gradually and continue at a slow comfortable pace before pushing yourself a little more.

2. Develop a personal rhythm. Maintain your steps to synchronized with breathing. This will help minimize getting out of breath.

3. Walking in Himalayan trails with loose soil and rocks is tricky. So, avoid stepping on loose soil and rocks and place the foot flat and firm with a better grip. Always follow the rule ‘heel first’ while walking in the Himalaya trail.

4. Walking in a zigzags manner while ascending on a very steep slope is advisable. While descending walking zigzag is a good technique to avoid excessive pressure on knees and avoid knee pain and blisters.

5. Avoid stepping on loose stones and soil to avoid an accident.

6. Avoid overtaking fellow travelers on a narrow trail. Only Overtake at comfortable wide space if necessary.

7. While ascending and descending a slope or over loose stones, leave sufficient space between the next person so that any stone rolling down does not hit trekkers below.

8. Do not run down a slope. Bend knees a little while descending. Dig heels into soft snow or soft ground.

9. Our Himalayan condition is mostly wet so avoid wet grass, wet roots, and the muddy zone which can be very slippery. Be careful while walking on them.

10. Shortcuts on a foot trail should be avoided.

11. Always put-on warm clothing while taking a rest. This will help avoid getting cold, cough and high-altitude sickness

12. Respect the sentiments and traditions of the local hill people.

13. Always carry enough water in your water bottle as water is essential in avoiding altitude sickness.

14. Wear comfortable and right set of trekking boots, pants and jackets. Avoid wearing new trekking boots directly for the Trek. Get used to it by wearing before the trek. Carry all necessary clothing’s.

 Halts and Rests:

1. While taking a rest, lie against a tree trunk, a big stone, or on flat ground. Place your legs on your bags or any other higher ground. This helps regulate blood circulation.

2. Stop at any comfortable point after the first start to readjust your rucksack, jackets, or to tie a shoelace for better comfort and adjustment.

3. Do not make frequent or prolonged halts. Too many small stops destroy the walking rhythm. Frequent rests are not helpful. You should follow your own rhythmic walking pace and technique to avoid unnecessary tiredness. A stop should be made only at natural stopping points, like on the top of a ridge, or before an ascent, or at a scenic viewpoint.

4. Stop and place yourself on the safer (Mountain) side to give way for the pack animals to pass through. Avoid bags carried by the animals that can push you. Be aware of the yak's horn too.

About Yuksom to Dzongri & Goecha La Trek

To capture the panorama of the Kanchenjunga range from a stone’s throw distance, the Dzongri and Goecha La trek from Yuksom is the perfect pick. The journey allows you to travel across the gorgeous alpine forest that melds with the vast biosphere of Sikkim. All throughout the trail you can get acquainted with varied species of wildflowers and avifauna and animals spread across different altitudes. The trail follows through the vast forest of rhododendrons with downhill and uphill treks through narrow ridges, and rough tracks. The Dzongri and Goecha La trek is no doubt one of the best treks in the Indian Himalayan region, thus mentioned in the diaries of every trekker. The moderate to strenuous trip further fascinates the trekker with several monasteries tucked in the mountains. Steeped in history, these monasteries dilate a diorama of the footsteps of Buddhism in Sikkim and also exhibit the cultural essence of the Lepchas, Bhutias, and Nepalis.

The trek from Yuksom, which is at an elevation of 1,780 meters, follows a gradual climb to Tshoka at 2,743 meters through the dense tropical forest of pine, bamboo, fir, oaks and flowering trees like magnolias and rhododendrons, which is a home to several wildlife and bird species at a different altitude. After that, the trek turns to Dzongri via a steep ascend to the Alp of Padang at 3,650 meters. There is a day of acclimatization at Dzongri, and one can reach Dzongri Top and take in the panoramic view of Kabru at 7,353 meters, Ratong at 6,678 meters, Kanchenjunga at 8,586 meters, Koktang at 6,147 meters, Pandim at 6,691 meters and Narsing at 5,825 meters. Towards the west, the Singalila Ridge, which separates Sikkim from Nepal, can be seen. The trail continues to Goecha La en route to Thangsing at 3,800 meters and lake Samiti that encircles a beautiful alpine meadow. The trek to Goecha La continues with a gentle gradient till you hit the glaciated tracks. The vicinity is further embellished with several small glacial lakes. Now, trek downhill and follow the same route.

The trek to Dzongri – Goecha La requires an Inner Line Permit, an official travel document issued by the Government of India. The best time to go for the trek, which takes approximately 11-12 days, is during the months of March, April, May, June, September, and October. During the winters, the tracks are usually bedded with a thick layer of snow making the journey more difficult.

Best Time to Visit Yuksom to Dzongri & Goecha La Trek

Mid-March to June end & Mid- September to Mid-November

Until early April, the trail beyond the first view point at Goecha La remains under snow. However by June, this part of the trail becomes fully accessible. There is a slightest chance that you might find light snow in the high altitude areas even in September/October.

Summer (May – June) Yuksom Day: 15°C to 25°C Night: 8°C to 15°C

Dzongri Day: 7°C to 15°C Night: 3°C to (-2) °C.

Monsoon (July to Mid-September) Trekkers should avoid going for trekking during the monsoon as the trails get slippery and roads remain blocked due to torrential rains. In the winter season, the trekking is often impossible as it snows heavenly and trails become inaccessible and weather quite foul.

Autumn (Mid September to end October) Yuksom Day: 13°C to 20°C Night: 2°C to 7°C

Dzongri Day: 2°C to 7°C. Night: 3°C to (-4) °C.

Winter (October to April) Don’t go for trekking during the winter season as the trails and even the motorable roads remain blocked due to heavy snowfall. Temperature might be as low as -20°C and mountaineering can turn out to be a very dangerous activity.

Since trekking requires covering large distances, usually by walking up and down hills and mountains, it is necessary that the trekkers should be physically fit. Altitude acclimatization is thoroughly necessary as the air gets lighter and with lower oxygen beyond Dzongri.

HIGHEST ALTITUDE

The biggest reason to do the Goechala trek is the grand views of the big mountains you see. You don’t just see one summit — the Kanchenjunga — but 14 other big summits. That’s a lot for any trek — especially as close to the eyes as on the Goechala trek. It is no wonder that trekkers consider Goechala to be the closest to the big mountain treks of Nepal.

Before we dive into the details about the Goechala trek, here is a little backdrop of why Goechala is well-known among trekkers all over the world:

While the trail to Goechala is old, it wasn’t always so famous. The change that occurred during the Nepalese Civil War lasted from 1996 to 2006.

Disturbances in Nepal during this time shut the country to trekkers. Suddenly trekking to the highest mountains of the world was out of bounds. It was a massive blow to the trekkers, who frantically started looking for alternatives.

At that time, Goechala emerged as the closest solace. The trail promised a brilliant close-up of the third highest mountain in the world and offered breathtaking views of the Singalila range from Dzongri Top.

Sunrise on the Kanchenjunga Range

One of the biggest highlights of the Goechala trek is the sunrise scene on the Kanchenjunga range. Even though trekkers are not allowed to the actual Goecha Pass, the view from ViewPoint 1 and Dzongri is worth an arm and a leg!

Rhododendrons in April and May

The trail to Goechala is blessed with rhododendron forests. And come spring-summer months of April and May, they burst to life with pink and red flowers! It’s an enormously pleasant walk through the wooden-log trails of these jungles!

The Samiti Lake

Samiti Lake is another big attraction on the Goechala trek. The view of the still waters, and the reflection of Mt Pandim in the lake, especially in the early hours, is a visual treat.

Goechala - Complete Trek Information

We have always wanted trekkers to be well-informed before they go on a Himalayan trek . Knowledge is the difference between a safe trek and a dangerous one. It’s also the difference between a wholesome experience and a superficial experience.

Use this section to learn about the Goechala trek. It has in-depth information about each day of the trek, what to expect, and how you need to prepare for it. Many years of expertise have gone into this content. Trekkers find that extremely useful.

What I Like and Don’t Like About the Goechala Trek

What I Like About the Goechala Trek

Sandhya is a founding partner at Indiahikes. Over the past ten years, she has explored and put on the map a few of the greatest Himalayan treks in India, including Kashmir Great Lakes and Kedarkantha. She is a TedX Speaker and has been awarded the "Women of Worth" Award by Outlook Business in 2017. She believes in sustainable living just as she believes in sustainable trekking. Here’s Sandhya talking about one of the well-known treks in our country.

1 . Dense jungle at 12,000 feet

There are very few treks with tree lines at such a high altitude. If you compare it with treks from Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh, the tree line skirts around 10,000 ft. But not on this trek which snakes through the Kanchenjunga National Park. And I found that exceptional. This is also one of the  Best Himalayan treks for Bird Watching .

Especially the thick canopy of Rhododendron trees which flower during the misty spring and are dark and cold during autumn.

2 . Three suspension bridges

You will cross these suspension bridges over three deep gorges – Pha Khola, Tshushay Khola and Mentogang Khola –  through which the Prekchu river flows. I was taken aback by how suddenly the bridges appeared. And the experience of staring into the deep gorge from these suspension bridges is rare.

3 . A monastery at Tshoka

This happens on the second day. Now you are almost at 9,500 ft and there is a monastery here! Can you believe that?

The monastery is not exactly at Tsokha. You will need to take a trail that goes out of the campsite and cross a wooden bridge over a pond. It’s such a peaceful setting. I’ve always seen mountains as a place where you can meditate. And so I was elated to find this monastery plonked into the Goechala trek.

4 . Dramatic changes in scene

The first one is from Tsokha to Dzongri. Initially, the trail meanders through rhododendron and pine trees. But on reaching Phedang, the dense forest cover suddenly gives way to a barren terrain. The change is startling.

Another dramatic change in scenery is from Kokchurang to Thansing. Here the Prekchu river, which you had seen flowing deep in the gorges, suddenly cuts through the jungle. Yes, now you are with the river.

And it lends such a mystical ambience to the setting. The shift in scene, with a wooden bridge going over the river, was surprising.

5 . First sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Dzongri Top

This is the acclimatization day where you stay at Dzongri. Early morning, wake up at 4.30 am and head to Dzongri top at 13,670 ft. It is a steep climb. But worth it.

I still remember the first time I saw the morning rays lighting up Mt. Kanchenjunga. The mountain changes colour as the morning progresses. And you get a panoramic view from the Dzongri top. It was a different feeling altogether. An unforgettable sight that has stayed with me.

6 . Camping at the foot of Mt Pandim

Thansing is the most picturesque campsite on the trek. It is a stark meadow on the riverbed of Prekchu. And it lends itself to a unique experience. At Thansing, I pitched my tent just at the foot of Mt. Pandim, right next to Prekchu. Sitting next to the river, watching Mt Pandim for long moments was a magical experience for me altogether.

7 . A perfect challenge for endurance

I have always leaned towards treks that test my endurance. And Goechala does that beautifully. On this trek, you cover 65.7 km in 10 days. And that too with a considerable ascent. Here, although the trails are well-laid, the altitude gain and long days put your endurance to the test.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

The approach to Viewpoint 1 is one of the longest and hardest of all our treks. Doing the trek requires solid physical preparation. Picture by Nikhil Agarwal

8 . The sunrise on Kanchenjunga from View Point 1

Finally, my favourite memory of the treks begins with waking up at 1 am for ViewPoint 1. Initially, I was grumpy about the unearthly hour start. But once we got to ViewPoint 1, everything changed.

Watching the first rays fall on Kanchenjunga is an ethereal experience. It lights up the world’s third-highest mountain along with others with a magical light. I was spellbound. My eyes welled up with tears, just watching the magnificent sight.

And then, on the way back I saw the beautiful Samiti lake. That lake, with its deep turquoise waters, was the perfect finish to the summit day.

What I Don't Like About the Goechala Trek

1 . The cramped campsite at Sachen

The campsite on Day 1 of the trek, Sachen is a really small flat land in the middle of the forest inside the Khangchendzonga National Park. There is enough space for just 5-6 tents at a time.

This makes it extremely cramped when compared to the campsites on our other Himalayan treks.

While the lush green atmosphere gives you a feeling that you're somewhere inside a thick rainforest, the lack of space can be a bummer at times.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Goechala

  • The Story of Yuksom
  • The Rich Biodiversity
  • A Mythical Landscape

Did You Know about the Chogyal Community of Sikkim?

yuksom to dzongri trek map

Yuksom is known as the meeting place of three monks. A long time ago, three monks travelled down here from Tibet. They crowned the first king of that region and named the community ‘Chogyal’. Since then, all those who were crowned kings belonged to the Chogyal community. In 1642, the first Chogyal king, Phuntsog Namgyal established Yuksom as the first capital of Sikkim. The Chogyal dynasty ruled there for over 300 years.

The Chogyal community, today too, plays an important role in their society. They banned any expedition in the mountains in the region from the Sikkim side. They considered it a dishonour to their Gods. After putting pressure on the government for some time, the central and state government both finally banned climbing from Sikkim in the early 2000s. That's why Kanchenjunga cannot be climbed from Sikkim and has to be climbed from Nepal.

Kanchenjunga, a Treasure Trove

yuksom to dzongri trek map

Kanchenjunga in Nepali translates to ‘five treasures of snow, as it has five peaks in total. Three of them can be seen from India and two from Nepal.

The Goechala trek takes us through the Kanchenjunga National Park. The significance of this is that it is the first and one of the rarest UNESCO World Heritage Sites which is selected under the Mixed Category (Cultural and Environmental Significance). It has high cultural as well as environmental importance.

Some communities here, like the Lepchas, have traditional practices which are still maintained. The indigenous community of the Lepchas have deep knowledge of medicinal plants. They, along with many other local communities, consider mountains to be their gods. These mountains are seen as sacred and are worshipped. Dense vegetation and myriad flora and fauna can be found here. It is also the home of snow leopards.

The Myths of Kanchenjunga

yuksom to dzongri trek map

A myth of this region is that there is supposed to be a valley to paradise somewhere in the lower reaches of Kanchenjunga. Once, a monk in Sikkim took many followers down this valley, and the whole lot of them were never found again.

Another story from local mythology tells us how Kanchenjunga is said to be the home of Yeti. It is a mythical creature that has never been seen. But folklore has identified massive footprints seen in the Himalayas as those of Yeti. This Yeti is said to be found in the lower reaches of the mountain.

There are stories of the war between the Lepcha community and Yetis too. If you catch hold of people from the Lepcha community, don't forget to ask them about this mythical war.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

yuksom to dzongri trek map

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

yuksom to dzongri trek map

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

Yuksom Dzongri Trek

Yuksom Dzongri Trekking

The Yuksom Dzongri Trek is the most popular trek in Sikkim that takes the trail towards the famous Goecha La. Goecha la Trek which is the premier trekking trail in Sikkim takes the trekkers up and closer to bring a spectacular view of the mighty Kanchenjunga amidst a majestic panorama of the other Himalayan giants within the mountain ranges.

An extension of the Dzongri Trek, the Yuksom-Dzongri Trek brings the raw trekking adventure at its best beyond the meadows where the visitors can take the natural realm of the towering peaks. From Yuksom, the trail follows the Rathong Valley to Bakkhim and from here a steep ascent to the village of Tsokha to reach Pedhang through the Tsokha trail. The trekkers then cross the river to reach Thangsing at the height of 3930 m.

The Yuksom Dzongri Trek is one of the more remote and stunning treks in India, taking one through forests of Rhododendron and valleys covered with lichen and moss, offering numerous birding opportunities and encounters with herds of Bharal or Blue mountain sheep and not to mention the stunning vistas of some of the highest mountains in the world.
