7-Day South Africa Safari Tours

South Africa is one of Africa’s most popular destinations. The wildlife viewing here is as good as anywhere, but few people come here for a stand-alone safari. The ever-changing landscapes include rugged mountains, fairy-tale forests, endemic fynbos, open savannah, tropical beaches and stark desert. South Africa’s 19 national parks and hundreds of reserves are dotted all around the country, so visits to these wildlife-dense areas are easily incorporated in a general holiday. A South African safari is rarely just that; pick and choose from all that’s on offer in this country of contrasts and you’ll have a holiday of a lifetime.

6 Questions About 7-Day South Africa Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

7 day south african safari

Is one week enough time for a safari in South Africa?

“Variety is key in South Africa and it is easy to spend two or three weeks on holiday in this huge country. One week would be a short holiday in a country with so much to offer, but it would be a great amount of time for a safari alone. A typical tour in South Africa consists of one or more safaris mixed in with other attractions. Most people visit Kruger National Park, a huge ecosystem offering excellent wildlife viewing. In 7 days you can tag on some sightseeing before or after the safari, or you can use the time to explore the less-visited central and northern parts of the park. For a rounded holiday, you can extend your safari to include highlights, such as Cape Town, the scenic Garden Route, the tropical beaches of KwaZulu-Natal and lots more.”

How much will this safari cost?

“South Africa has safari options to suit every budget. As a guideline, you can expect prices for a 7-day budget safari to start at about US$1,100 per person, while mid-range tours start at around US$1,500 per person. Compared to some other safari destinations, South Africa offers great value for money. The good road network and abundance of facilities make self-drive holidays a popular option. While this is mostly alluring to people who like to travel independently, there are great guided tours on offer as well. Shared safaris are usually budget-friendly, especially camping or glamping tours. Private tours offer more flexibility. The overall price of the tours depends hugely on the level of accommodation. Lodges and rest camps in and outside the national parks are often moderately priced, but luxury packages in a much higher price bracket are offered by most private game reserves. South Africa is big, but low-cost domestic flights make travel between cities efficient and cheap. However, high-end fly-in safaris that fly you directly to the reserves’ airstrips are generally more pricey. Always get a few quotations before making a final decision.”

Where should I go on a 7-day tour in South Africa?

“There are many options for a 7-day South Africa tour. Kruger NP is one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations. It’s hard to beat when it comes to seeing a big variety of animals. The same is true of the private reserves bordering Kruger, many of which share the same ecosystem with open fences. While Kruger is highly recommended for self-drive visitors and budget travelers, the private reserves offer a different kind of experience. Here your expert guide will get you close to all of the Big Five in an open-sided safari vehicle. Whereas in Kruger you need to stay on the roads, you’ll go off-road in the reserves, so look forward to some exhilarating close-up encounters here. Other great wildlife areas include KwaZulu-Natal, with a cluster of scenic coastal reserves, and the desert of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park bordering Namibia. The Zululand reserves are renowned for their high densities of rhinos, and Kgalagadi is sufficiently off the beaten track to appeal to even the most adventurous travelers. Cape Town and the beautiful Garden Route are a great choice for a one-week tour too. Although the Cape doesn’t have the same authentic African flavor as other parts of the country, Big Five reserves, such as Shamwari and Kwandwe Game Reserves, offer a great alternative to the better-known Sabi Sands near Kruger. Elephant-lovers should not miss out on Addo Elephant National Park where big herds can be seen at strategically placed waterholes.”

What is the best time of the year for a South Africa trip?

“South Africa can be visited at any time. However, if wildlife viewing is your main interest, the best time of the year for a safari in South Africa is from May to September. This is the South African winter, which corresponds to the Dry season in most of the country (the exception is the Cape Town area, which experiences winter rainfall). As the bush dries out animals gather around remaining water sources, such as rivers and waterholes. At this time, the lush vegetation of the Wet season shrivels away, which makes spotting easier as well. While the South African winter is most productive for seeing lots of wildlife, you have to keep in mind that early mornings and evenings can be very cold in open vehicles. Always bring warm clothes for those game drives. The shoulder month of September is lovely as it is the end of the Dry season, but temperatures start to increase a little. Depending on the balance of your holiday you might prefer the warmer summer months from October to April, when conditions are ideal for spending time on the beach and sightseeing in general.”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“You’ll see plenty of animals on a 7-day safari in South Africa. With a bit of luck, you might even see the Big Five. Your chances are quite good when spending 3 or 4 days in Kruger NP. Even more so in the nearby private reserves where off-road driving makes sightings easier. Elephant, buffalo and giraffe are easily seen. So is lion, but leopard and cheetah sightings are more hit-and-miss. However, leopard is the flagship animal in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, where you might see more than one on a three-hour game drive. Other private reserves, such as Phinda Game Reserve, offer amazing cheetah sightings. You might spot a rhino in Greater Kruger, but the best place to see these endangered heavyweights is in the KwaZulu-Natal reserves and the private reserves of the Eastern Cape. A safari is about a lot more than the Big Five though. You’ll see a great variety of animals, many you might not even known exist. You might see monkeys and baboons, jackals, bat-eared foxes and hyenas, crocodiles and hippos, mongooses and warthogs. You’ll see lots of different antelope species, from the tiny steenbok that freezes when spotted, to the massive but very shy eland. With about 850 birds recorded, South Africa is a fantastic birding destination too.”

Can I extend my trip with a beach holiday?

“There are lots of opportunities to extend your South Africa safari with some time on the beach. South Africa’s 2,850km/1,770mi coastline is as varied as it is long. The calm, warm waters of the Indian Ocean on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal are most suitable for a conventional beach holiday. The Eastern Cape beaches are less developed and offer an off-the-beaten-track alternative. The beautiful southern beaches along the Garden Route are lovely in summer but very cold in winter. Active visitors wanting to explore, walk or cycle as well as relax enjoy this area most. If none of this is tropical enough for you, you can take a short flight to Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar or Mozambique to experience true island bliss.”

7 day safari South Africa

Besides spectacular Big 5 sightings, South Africa is home to a glorious diversity of birdlife and wildlife, including various endangered species such as the African wild dog, cheetah, sable, and roan antelope in iconic destinations including Kruger National Park and Phinda Game Reserve.

Sightings of Africa’s lesser known Little 5, namely the leopard tortoise, rhino beetle, elephant shrew, ant lion, and the red-billed buffalo weaver are also something to look forward to on your 7 day South African safari.

The best 7 day South Africa Tours

Price of a 7 day south africa safari.

South Africa has safari options to suit every budget with prices for a 7 day budget safari to start at about US$1,100 per person, while mid-range tours start at around US$1,500 per person. Compared to some other safari destinations, South Africa offers great value for money.

Safari packages to South Africa span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury. Shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 7 day trip you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but these are considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Safari essentials and information

Is a 7 day safari in south africa sufficient.

7 days is a nice amount of time to see, hear and experience the incredible wildlife and sights of South Africa. The number of days needed to properly do a South Africa safari can range from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

Each day consists of an early morning game drive and a late afternoon game drive, certainly sufficient time to view the big 5 and incredible scenery. On a 7 day trip you can even break up the drive to parks like Kruger with an overnight stay in Phinda Game Reserve or MalaMala Private Game Reserve .

Alternatively you can spend all of your time in the famous Kruger National Park . With full days at the reserve, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore this iconic safari destination including a full-day dusk-to-dawn game drive that will include lunch at one of the picnic spots.

Morning and evening game drives are rewarding as well, but on a full day you can get further into the reserve, away from the more-crowded areas. Overall, 7 days is a good amount of time for a safari in South Africa if it is part of a larger tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal if possible.

Must do on a 7 day South Africa safari

The most popular option for a 7 day South African safari is Kruger National Park. Most visitors fly into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) near Johannesburg and take a connecting flight to Kruger airport.

Kruger NP is a popular self-drive destination. You can also hire a car in Johannesburg and drive to the park. The park has nine entrance gates, the closest of which, Numbi Gate, is 375km/235mi from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport. The drive takes at least four hours.

With nearly 2 million hectares of unrivaled habitats, Kruger offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the very best in Africa. All of the continent’s iconic safari species – elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, zebra and so much more.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is another incredible wildlife destination located in KwaZulu-Natal, the reserve is a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest. Another notable feature is its location, in close proximity to the unspoiled beaches and spectacular coral reefs of the Indian Ocean.

Other animals to be viewed on a South African safari include hyenas, giraffes, hippos, zebras, African wild dogs, crocodiles, wildebeest, kudu, warthogs, springbok and cheetahs.

Visitors on a 7 day South Africa safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 7 day South Africa safari?

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

Amazing experience with a fantastic guide and great safari company. Our experience with Serengeti Adrian tours couldn't have been easier and we felt very lucky to have our guide, Abu. Abu is very knowledgeable, experienced, and an excellent spotter of wildlife. Because of Abu and his spirited drive, we were able to see all of the big 5 and many other wonderful animals. The itinerary itself was packed and gave us an opportunity to enjoy all of the different excursions in Tanzania without having to worry about the logistics. All of the places we stayed at that were selected by Serengeti African tours were wonderful with great staff themselves. In the lead up to the trip, Lucas, Safina were extremely responsive and made sure all the arrangements were correct in planning the right vacation for us.

5 Days Tanzania Budget Safari

A wish that has come true I did the safari with my wife and a couple friends. From the first contact to the end everything was super organized and you felt safe in every situation. Every staff member on this tour was very accommodating and not only took care of everything for us, but also put a smile on our faces. It has always been a dream of mine to get to know the heart of Africa and my dream was fulfilled by our tour guide Aboh. His 10 years of experience was felt in every moment. Chasing the Bug Five, he told us everything about the nature, the animals and the land. We could not have had a better man at our side. In addition, the luxury camp in the Serengeti Park is absolute madness. The quality is outstanding and unforgettable. The private dinner is incredibly romantic. I can only recommend to everyone to do this tour.

5 Days Big Five Tanzania Camping Safari ( Tarangire, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area ) (all accommodation and transport are included)

My wife and I recently spent 9 days in Tanzania. Our trip was organized through African Travels with Spider tours and safaris. We saw so much during our time there. We visited Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Lake Manyara National parks. Our guide was Harlequin during our time and he was fantastic. Great job of positioning for viewing, pointing out birds in additional to the animals, and just being an enjoyable person throughout the trip.

"AMAZING SAFARI" Bon Voyage Safari provided an unforgettable 6-day journey to Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Mt. Longonot. From start to finish, their professionalism and attention to detail were exceptional. The personalized itinerary perfectly catered to my interests, showcasing their expertise and knowledge of the region. The knowledgeable guide made me feel welcome and at ease from the moment I arrived. Their passion for wildlife was evident, and their ability to spot elusive creatures was remarkable. Lake Nakuru's thousands of flamingos and diverse wildlife made every game drive an exhilarating experience. Lake Naivasha's tranquil beauty and boat ride allowed for up-close encounters with hippos and stunning bird species. The landscapes surrounding the lake provided a serene backdrop for relaxation and reflection. The pinnacle of the safari was the awe-inspiring Mt. Longonot. The hike to the summit was challenging but rewarding, with breathtaking panoramic views of the Rift Valley. The guide's support ensured a safe and unforgettable experience for everyone. Bon Voyage Safari delivered a dream-like experience in Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Mt. Longonot. Their dedication, professionalism, and expertise surpassed expectations. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safari for an extraordinary adventure in Kenya's natural wonders. I highly recommend Bon Voyage Safari's.

Kruger Lodge Experience Tour

Kruger Lodge Experience

The entire trip was well organized. All the drivers and guides were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that we did not like was the optional day because we haven't been informed by our lodge about the options and by the time we wanted to book something they told us that all the tours were fully booked, so we basically had a down day. So if you are planning to do this trip I would recommend that you ask about the options for the optional day upon arrival and be sure to make up your mind early enough in order to get your spot. Accomodation was ok with very friendly staff.

Reviews of 7 day Safari Tours

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
The tour was very well organized. Everything worked up quite well and everyone took good care of us. It was a magnificent time in Tanzania's wild nature. Also the tour company took care of all changes online (one day early arrival and extra shira tour booking) in a flexible and timely manner. Our Safari guide and driver Israel did really a great job. He worked hard to find all the animals for us as good as possible. This wasn't an easy job as we were there during rain season. He kept us safe and well informed all the time. We saw many wild animals such as cheetahs, lions, giraffes, buffalos, elephants, hippos, hyenas and of course tons of Gnus, zebras and all kinds of antilopes, monkeys and birds. We could even see some of the big five like the lion from eye to eye, roaming around less than 1m from our vehicle! Of course there's no guaranty of which wild animals you'll see as we're talking about natural parks, but you can rest assured the guides are doing their best to show you what nature is offering during your visit. All the staff in the hotels, parks and people in general were very kind and very welcoming! The food was always good and safe. FYI, the actual safari is 5 days + 2 days arrival and departure. Nevertheless within these 5 days we saw so many places and had a unique nature experience. "Luxury" as mentioned in the title is a bit too much said, especially when it comes to accommodation. On the other hand all the hotel names/ratings and the exact itinerary were mentioned clearly so no surprises. The luxurious part was actually that we were only on our own since it's low season :) Our guide Israel was flexible and fulfilled every possible wish we had. The Maasai village tour in the way to Serengeti costs an extra 50$ which is a fair price but they will also offer you some overpriced hand-made souvenirs to buy. The tour itself was very interesting and nice including a welcome song and dance basically from the whole village :) The Serengeti Safari lounge was quite spacious and had a big balcony to enjoy the endless view of the Serengeti. That was definitely the best accommodation of the trip. We woke up to a great show of a huge group of Gnus and Zebras directly in front of our balcony. The very ones who were singing for us all night :) Last but not least: if you're wondering about the prices even for a day tour, you should know that the park fees including conservation fees are quite high. So you're basically contributing to the well-being of these parks as well as the many wonderful people protecting them.
The tour was exactly what we expected. It was early mornings, lots of time in vehicles searching for animals, and a lot of photography and amazing sights. The campsites were awesome, but make sure you are okay sleeping in tents with 3” foam mattresses (it wasn’t a problem for us, but you need to expect to rough it a bit). The guide, drivers, and cooks were amazing and incredibly helpful and kind.

Botswana Experience
Anja, our agent, was very kind and helpful all the time to organize the perfect trip. She did it quickly and efficiently. The amount of days we spent in every place was perfect to really enjoy the hotels and the different activities they proposed (in general the hotels are very nice but we don’t have the time to really experience the place but here we did). Also the selections of hotels was very very nice. Nice infrastructure, excellent service (very professional) and outstanding places to visit (all the parks were great). We had a wonderful experience with the company in Botswana.

There were issues with your website among other things that had me feeling uncomfortable. Keith has great energy which eased my concerns. I feel the package Keith put together is great and I expect to have a wonderful trip.

Adventures in Nature: Cape Town & Karongwe Game Reserve

7 day south african safari

Itinerary Details

FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: Venture through South Africa as a family to have unforgettable wildlife encounters. This family vacation takes you from Cape Town to Greater Kruger to see South Africa’s famous animals like lions and cheetahs, and incorporates kids programs for stress-free family travel.

Adventures in Nature

This 7-day South African safari takes your family on an unforgettable adventure through the nation, and includes fabulous Cape Town and the exciting Great Kruger National Park.

Arriving in Cape Town, you’ll head to Somerset West and have the option to visit Cheetah Outreach and Eagle Encounters, two significant conservation projects that allow visitors to get up close to cheetahs and birds of prey while supporting their preservation and rehabilitation. Return to Cape Town and explore South Africa’s most beautiful city at your leisure. Consider a ride to the top of Table Mountain for views over the coastline or roam the waterfront, Cape Town’s most popular attraction. History buffs should make time for a tour of Robben Island, the notorious island prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 17 years.

From Cape Town, connect to Greater Kruger National Park, the country’s most popular wildlife area. Staying in a safari lodge, you and your family will head on game drives to see the Big Five and explore the African bush. If you opt for the deluxe package, you’ll even stay at luxurious Sabi Sands Reserve, home to the EleFun Centre, which offers guests aged four to 12 a chance to learn about nature and the park’s animal residents. Regardless of your choice of package, this trip to Kruger will involve wildlife encounters you and your family will never forget.

At the end of your stay, return back home.

7 Day Cape Winelands & Safari

Spend seven days enjoying two of South Africa’s most sought-after areas: the Cape Winelands and a safari in the Kruger Park. This Wineland’s portion of the trip makes use of the quaint village of Franschhoek as a base. From here we explore not just the Winelands but other gems of the Cape including the peninsula and the coastal town of Hermanus.

Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands

The safari aspect makes use of one of the private game lodges within the Kruger Park and will be once in a lifetime experience, where you enjoy open vehicle safaris in a wildlife-rich wilderness area of the Kruger Park.

Itinerary at a Glance Day 1 – Arrive in Cape Town, and transfer to the Cape Winelands. Basse Provence Country House. Day 2 – Tour of the Cape Peninsula. Day 3 - Tour to Hermanus & Hemel en Aarde Wine Region Day 4 – Transfer to Cape Town Airport for your flight to Skukuza. Rhino Post Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park. Day 5 & 6 - On safari at Rhino Post Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park. Day 7 - Transfer back to Skukuza Airport for your flight to Johannesburg Airport for your onward journey.

Day 01 - Arrive Cape Town, Transfer to Cape Winelands

Arriving in Cape Town, you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to the picturesque village of Franschhoek, a one-hour 15-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. Check into your room at the Basse Provence Country House where you will stay for (3) nights on a bed-and-breakfast basis. Included in your stay is a complimentary Wine Tasting at Rickety Bridge Winery.

Basse Provence, Cape Winelands, South Africa

Situated just across the river from the Rickety Bridge Wine Estate, dating back to the late 1700s, the Basse Provence Guest House is a beautifully restored 1850s Cape Dutch Manor house. Beautiful views of vineyards and mountains greet you each day and with just eight rooms the guest house offers true intimacy and personal attention. World-class wine tastings, fine dining and classic Cape Winelands countryside are what you can expect when staying at the Basse Provence Guest House. Franschhoek is now a vibrant little village in the very pretty surroundings of the Cape Winelands. Founded by the French Hugenouts this little place has been very well preserved and offers a good insight into the architecture and history of the Cape, as well as easy access to some of the finest Cape wine estates.

We pass through Hout Bay and stop for a 40-minute boat trip to Duiker Island (optional extra) where you can see thousands of Cape fur seals up close in their natural environment. We drive through the historical naval town of Simon’s Town to Boulders Beach famous for its African penguins.

This includes Africa’s Big 5 as well as scores of other animals including hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs and cheetahs. The Rhino Post Safari Lodge is located in a private concession in the southwest region of this giant game reserve. The camp is small with wooden walkways connecting the rooms and the main area. It overlooks a dry river bed that is home to large green trees and the chance to see passing wildlife is good. South Africa safari: when to go, what you'll see, where to stay

By Jane Broughton

Great Fish River Lodge

South Africa has a well-deserved reputation for its many design-forward, eco-conscious safari lodges offering every conceivable luxury and almost guaranteed game viewing throughout the year. As a safari destination, South Africa is easy to get to and navigate once on the ground, making it an ideal last-minute romantic getaway for couples or a sunny winter safari for families. And while it remains an excellent choice for first-timers wanting to experience a classic, big five safari, this destination is just as popular with seasoned philanthropists taking annual impact trips supporting innovative, privately funded conservation initiatives to regenerate animal habitat, protect biodiversity and save critically endangered species .

couple in 4x4 on safari woman holding camera

The most sought-after lodges and safari camps are in private conservation areas, within private game reserves scattered across the country, or in the Greater Kruger area, which includes the Kruger National Park. Small and often owner-run, these luxury, light-footprint properties are in hand-picked, scenic locations and offer deeply layered, immersive safari experiences on and off the vehicle led by experienced guides and trackers with an intimate knowledge of the ecosystem in which they’re working. Many privately protected areas share unfenced boundaries with neighbouring tracts of protected land so that animals can roam and establish their territory over a larger space in tune with seasonal changes. Along with exclusive, up-close sightings and a limit on the number of vehicles permitted, other private concession perks include the freedom to drive off-road where permitted, take guided walks and night drives , enjoy remote bush dinners and star bed sleep-outs, and get involved with hands-on conservation. Sustainably managed properties that are fully invested in protecting the environment while maximising the positive economic spinoffs of nature-based tourism to local communities should always be a consideration before booking anything.

When to go to South Africa for safari

Most of the go-to game reserves are in the northeast of South Africa and experience summer rain in thunderstorms followed by a dry winter with cool to chilly nights and warm, clear-skied sunny days ( May to October ). Winter is, therefore, the most popular time to go on safari, when the dry conditions lead to concentrations of animals around reliable water sources. This makes game viewing more predictable and animals easier to track and locate due to sparse vegetation and minimal ground cover. The mild, clear days are great for getting off the vehicle to track and explore the bush on foot. Summer rain radically transforms the bush, and everything explodes with life as the days heat up. Dense thickets and trees in leaf reduce visibility and make game viewing more challenging, but the lush, green vegetation attracts summer migrants and becomes a birder’s paradise. Predator activity increases, too, due to the abundance of baby animals at a time when food is plentiful for all. After the rain, the dust settles and light conditions are excellent for photography. Autumn and spring are good for witnessing the antelope rutting season. An early or late summer safari could be South Africa’s best-kept secret, especially with the add-on of a beach holiday outside of Cape Town ’s busiest time (from mid- December to end- January ). Elsewhere, the semi-arid Karoo and Kalahari are dry and clear-skied in winter and have low rainfall averages in summer but get very hot. In general, off-peak travel is underrated, with benefits including better availability, potential stay-longer, pay-less deals, and the possibility of securing a private vehicle.

Where to go in South Africa for safari

The private conservation areas in and around the Greater Kruger area are synonymous with South Africa’s reputation for delivering epic, up-close predator action interpreted by knowledgeable guides. Kruger shares unfenced boundaries with several private reserves, including the Sabi Sand, where iconic, family-owned properties like Mala Mala , Londolozi , and Singita first put the region on the map thanks to reliable big cat sightings, especially leopards. Further private properties within the Timbavati, Thornybush and Klaserie reserves add thousands of hectares to the Greater Kruger, encouraging natural species migration and collectively securing habitat for many rare and endangered animals. In the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park, Pafuri’s immense flood plains and dense forests are renowned for walking safaris. At the same time, Singita’s privately leased Lebombo concession on the park’s Mozambican border provides strategic protection for rhinos. Further afield, large, private malaria-free reserves like Madikwe, close to the Botswana border, Marataba in the Waterberg, Samara in the Great Karoo, Tswalu in the southern Kalahari, and Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape, provide shelter for an astounding diversity of big game and rare and elusive species, boast breathtaking scenery and offer a choice of intimately scaled lodges for immersive, romantic getaways, secluded, off-grid trails camps for adventurers, and fully staffed, exclusive-use bush villas for multigenerational families .

Beyond Tengile River Lodge

The best lodges to book

Tengile river lodge, sabi sand.

This beautifully modern AndBeyond-run lodge in the Sabi Sand has nine energy-efficient, villa-sized suites – 200 square metres in extent – cleverly concealed in a riverine forest on a bend of the Sand River where elephants often come to feed. Hand-painted botanical print fabrics, recycled stone terrazzo floors, and bespoke throws and rugs add character to the smart, modern interiors, everything angled for soaking in the tranquil views. A glass-walled forest-green marble bathroom leads to an outdoor shower on a private, shaded deck and a big  pool . The lodge’s spa and gym also have a lap pool for training swims - necessary, as the food is delicious.

Best for: Nature-loving aesthetes will appreciate the sleek, glamorous style of this lodge, which champions local, eco-friendly design, and having exclusive access to over 10,000 hectares in the quieter south-east of the Sabi Sand reserve.

Cheetah Plains, Sabi Sand

Electric, solar-powered game-drive vehicles offer a zero-emissions ride and properly quiet encounters with wildlife at this 100 per cent off-grid luxury property in the Sabi Sand. In synch with its sustainable approach to game-viewing, Cheetah Plains uses the latest in grey-water recycling. It powers everything from the air-cons to the temperature-controlled wine cellars in its three exclusive-use lodges on renewable solar energy. Named after legendary big cats in the area, the three exclusive-use lodges have four private guest suites - think glass walls gliding away into raw concrete to bring nature closer, even from the bath. Burnished metal, unpolished stone and solid timber interiors are the counterpart to colourful contemporary South African artworks.

Best for: Silent game drives in fast and efficient electric vehicles, charged off renewable energy, designed by Cheetah Plains’ owner, a former rally driver, to be extra-comfortable with luxury SUV suspension, ergonomically shaped padded bucket seats with built-in seat warmers for chilly winter mornings.

Great Fish River Lodge, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

Nine gloriously remote, romantic suites with viewing decks and private pools sit above the Great Fish River, which meanders for 30 kilometres through this rugged, 22,000-hectare, privately owned reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape province, within driving distance of the Garden Route’s long, sandy beaches and indigenous forests. The breeding ground of the blue crane, Kwandwe has just 30 rooms split across two intimate lodges (Great Fish River being one of them), three exclusive-use villas (ideal for family safaris), and an off-grid tented camp. Exclusivity at up-close sightings of the big five, black rhino, cheetah and smaller, but no less significant, vulnerable and endangered species is amplified by the rugged wilderness setting: extensive open plains interrupted by carbon-storing subtropical thicket-clad hills, securing vital habitat for wildlife that last roamed freely here over 120 years ago.

Best for: A big five safari with a luxury of space and privacy for a romantic getaway, after exploring the Garden Route or Cape Town. Malaria free makes it ideal for families and the elderly, too - multiple generations sharing a fully staffed villa with a private vehicle and guide.

Royal Malewane Farmhouse

The Farmstead, at Royal Malewane, Thornybush Private Game Reserve

On expertly guided drives from this sister property to Royal Malewane’s original lodge, sightings include leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and sizeable elephant and buffalo herds. A Master Tracker leads walks. Increased movement of animals has resulted in a richer game-viewing experience in this increasingly popular privately owned reserve - all because fences were dropped on the eastern boundary with the Timbavati in 2017, opening it up to the Greater Kruger area. Liz Biden’s inimitable riotous style doesn’t hold back in this celebratory lodge with three luxury suites plus a separate villa with space for six additional adults. Like Liz’s newest addition to Royal Malewane, Waterside Lodge, this one features fun Ardmore fabrics, animal print and plush velvets in jewel colours and lots of South African art. In summer, deep verandas encourage lazing outdoors on swinging daybeds or one of the loungers submerged in the pool’s shallow end. The local Moletele community own the land here and benefits financially from the lodge’s success.

Best for: House parties, especially if the Biden family’s original bush villa, Africa House, is too big – newly renovated, its six suites share two pools, a spa treatment suite and gym.
