How to Get to Uyo Uyo Ruins: The Many Routes
The route to Uyo Uyo ruins can be tailored depending on your fitness level, how long you have been at altitude, and your interests. We recommend including any of the following routes either on foot or on horseback as a part of a larger, tailormade trip to Peru with Aracari.
Route #1: Yanque – Sifon Bridge – Uyo Uyo – Colca Lodge
This classic route takes about 2 hours including stops for pictures and time to explore the ruins. Starting in the small village of Yanque (3,417m or 11,211ft), your vehicle will drop you and you will walk through the town and over a small ridge to reach Sifon Bridge. Here you can observe the ancient food storage units built in rock, or Colca’s, that give the region its name . After crossing the bridge, proceed on through farms and terraced land before reaching an uphill climb of around 15 minutes. It is steep, but there are plenty of benches along the way to rest and enjoy the views. Upon arrival at Uyo Uyo ruins you can explore the ancient village, taking note of the Inca influenced architecture. Then you will gradually descend to the ending point at Colca Lodge where you can walk to your room or your vehicle can pick you up to take you to your hotel . This can also be done in reverse.
Route #2: Colca Lodge – Uyo Uyo – Colca Lodge
Guests staying at Colca Lodge can reach the ruins without a vehicle, gradually ascending about 30 minutes to Uyo Uyo ruins, exploring the site, then descending the same route back to the lodge. For travelers who choose this route, we still recommend being accompanied by a guide on the 1+ hour excursion, for better understanding of the ruins and to avoid getting lost.
Route #3: Short Walk to Uyo Uyo
For travelers who want to shorten the walk, your vehicle can drop you just 600m from the ruins . From this point, you will make a steep 15 minute ascent, with plenty of places to stop and catch your breath along the way, to the ruins. You can explore the ancient site and then take the same path 600m to your vehicle. In total this option will take about 45 minutes depending on fitness level and including the time at the ruins.
Route #4: Yanque – Sifon Bridge – Uyo Uyo – Cervantes Bridge
Similar to route #1, you can opt to extend your walk past Colca Lodge to the historic Cervantes Bridge. This adds about 20 minutes making the walk about 2hrs 20mins total, and is a nice choice for guests at Belmond Las Casitas who need to cross the river to get to their hotel. After crossing the river via Cervantes Bridge, your vehicle will be waiting to take you to your hotel or next destination. This can also be done in reverse.
Interested in Hiking?
The Colca Canyon and Valley offer a range of stunning hikes for all fitness levels and all types of trekkers. From the gentle acclimatization walk to Uyo Uyo Ruins described above, to a gorgeous moderate hike through the Canocota Canyon , to a steep trek to Madrigal Chimpa Fortress and lookout point, no matter where your feet take you in the region you won’t be disappointed.

Uyo Uyo, ruins of the ancient village of Collagua tribe
Whether on horseback or foot, Uyo Uyo village is one of the top and easily accessible places to visit while in Yanque.
Whenever anyone asked me about it, I pointed to the other side of the Colca Canyon: âYou see, it’s right there!â So close to almost reach but getting there requires some walking down and then up again. Of course I was the lucky one to go there always on horseback, in 3 of 4 cases it was white mare called Nieve who was a great ride, if only I let her go fast enough, in all other cases she could get quite moody. đ
Crossing the Sifon bridge
The trail starts through the village, passing by the main square of Yanque and descending towards the Sifon bridge . Crossing it is an experience of itself, especially when the wind blows through the narrow valley and you see that deep drop with roaring river below. Even the horses tend to be hesitating to step on it and the first time I took tourists there (and didn’t know my horses well), I made sure to take apples with me to reward each of the horses once they beat their fear. It worked! đ
From the bridge or from the other side of the valley we could admire the âcolcasâ – mud and stone caves that served for storing crops or seeds.
And then the climb starts but the horses, especially Nieve push hard to get up the main road very fast. A little gallop brings us to the side of the hill and on its plateau spreads the Uyo Uyo village. The last climb is to be done of feet â a little exercise after all â while the horses take rest, having a selection of mountain plants, growing in this area.
The history of the village goes back into the past, 500 years ago . That’s when the tribes of Collaguas and Cabanas settled here and established their headquarters at this village. Visiting the ruins of the villages is like a journey into those times, seeing those stone houses where people lived, the main square where they gathered, the old but still fully functional water channels and the cascade fields below, so perfectly thought-through that the water from the hills gets distributed into all its parts.
The village of Uyo Uyo as seen today was also influenced by the Inca culture , we can notice the typical stonework on these houses. In the 16th century the Spanish conquistadors arrived and created towns throughout the valley, such as Yanque. Ever since, the Uyo Uyo together with other similar villages became abandoned. However, many locals still speak Quechua , the language of Cabanas.
The way back, passing the thermals
Back on the horses, we have a fun ride ahead. The road is wide ,after all it serves as a back road to Chivay and one has to watch out for cars, but when its empty we can let the horses run and they sure enjoy as much as us. Except for Caramelo perhaps, he doesn’t like to spend too much of his energy. đ
Just above the thermal spas, we look for a tiny path to descent towards an old stone bridge across the Colca river one more time.
Thermal baths
There are three thermal baths in Yanque. First one, located right next to the two bridges, is more like a swimming pool with warm water. Many families with children come here and at times, this gives me headache and claustrophobia. đ The other two, proper hot pools a little bit down, right by the Colca river. The water is warm enough to relax your tired muscles but if it gets too hot, one can always cool down in the nearby river. All three thermal baths charge 15 soles for tourists and 5 for Peruvian and locals (like us). đ
One more gallop up the road that leads back to Yanque village and then zig-zaging through the tiny streets all the way back to the stables of Tradicion Colca . That’s all, I hope you enjoyed the ride. đ

Americans who have traveled internationally stand out in their views and knowledge of foreign affairs
Do people who travel think differently about the world? A new Pew Research Center survey suggests they do.
Americans who have traveled internationally are more interested in and knowledgeable about foreign affairs, feel closer to others around the world, and favor a more active foreign policy, according to the survey of 3,576 U.S. adults conducted in spring 2023. We also surveyed people in 23 other countries about their international travel habits.
This analysis examines international travel with a focus on Americansâ travel, including which Americans travel abroad and how their interest in the world and views of international affairs differ from others.
For this analysis, we surveyed 3,576 U.S. adults from March 20 to March 26, 2023; 3,581 U.S. adults from March 21 to March 27, 2022; and 10,606 U.S. adults from June 14 to June 27, 2021. Everyone who took part in these surveys is a member of the Centerâs American Trends Panel (ATP), an online survey panel that is recruited through national, random sampling of residential addresses. This way nearly all U.S. adults have a chance of selection. The survey is weighted to be representative of the U.S. adult population by gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education and other categories. Read more about the ATPâs methodology .
For non-U.S. data, this report draws on nationally representative surveys of 27,285 adults conducted from Feb. 20 to May 22, 2023. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Hungary, Poland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode probability-based online panel.
Here are the June 2021 survey questions and responses used in this analysis. Those for the March 2022 survey may be found here , as well as those for the March 2023 survey .
How many Americans have traveled internationally?
Roughly three-quarters of Americans (76%) have visited at least one other country, including 26% who have been to five or more. About a quarter (23%) have not traveled internationally, though most in this group say they would if they had the opportunity.
Related:Â How experience with international travel varies across 24 countries
To analyze how Americansâ travel experiences relate to their attitudes on other questions, we placed people into three categories:
- Globe-trotters have traveled to at least five other countries. About a quarter of the U.S. public (26%) falls into this category.
- Casual travelers have traveled to between one and four other countries. Half of Americans fall into this category.
- Nontravelers have never left the United States. This category includes 23% of Americans.
Compared with Americans, people in many European nations are more likely to have traveled to five or more other countries. For instance, 88% of Swedes have done so.
However, international travel is much less common in many middle-income nations. It is strongly correlated with a nationâs gross domestic product per capita. (For more on international travel and views about global engagement, read âAttitudes on an Interconnected World.â )
Who travels internationally?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, older people are more likely than younger people to have traveled internationally. Americans ages 65 and older are more than twice as likely as adults under 30 to fall into our globe-trotter category (37% vs. 17%).
Income is even more strongly related to travel than age. Two-thirds of upper-income Americans have traveled to at least five countries, compared with 9% of Americans with lower incomes.
Similarly, Americans with a postgraduate degree are far more likely to be globe-trotters than those with a high school education or less (59% vs. 10%).
Residents of suburban and urban areas generally have more international travel experience than people who live in rural areas.
There are no significant partisan differences when it comes to international travel: 26% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents qualify as globe-trotters, as do 28% of Republicans and GOP leaners.
Do travelers know more about the world?
Globe-trotters are especially likely to say they are interested in foreign affairs and follow international news. Casual travelers, in turn, are more likely than nontravelers to do so.
Globe-trotters are also the most knowledgeable about international affairs. In 2022, we conducted an international affairs quiz , asking Americans 12 questions related to international news. On average, globe-trotters got 8.2 of the 12 questions correct, compared with 6.4 for casual travelers and 4.2 for nontravelers.
Is international travel related to views of global engagement?
International travel experience is also linked to Americansâ views about international affairs and their feelings of connection to other people around the world.
When asked which comes closest to their view, 57% of globe-trotters say the U.S. should be active in world affairs, while 43% say the U.S. should pay less attention to problems in other countries and concentrate on problems at home. In contrast, most casual travelers and nontravelers say the U.S. should focus on problems at home.
In all three groups, at least half of respondents say that when the U.S. is making foreign policy, it should take other countriesâ interests into account â even if that means making compromises. But globe-trotters are especially likely to hold that view.
Globe-trotters are also particularly likely to say they feel close to people around the world, with 42% saying so. By comparison, 34% of casual travelers and 30% of nontravelers say this.

The Dept. Of Transportation Lays Out Exactly When an Airline Owes You a Refund
The rule comes amid the DOT's continued effort to advocate for passengers.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) issued new rules Wednesday requiring airlines to disclose all fees upfront as well as âpromptlyâ provide refunds when they are owed. Under the new rule, travelers are entitled to a refund if an airline cancels or significantly changes their flight, like changing the departure or arrival time by more than 3 hours for domestic flights and 6 hours for international flights, the DOT shared with Travel + Leisure . Travelers can also demand a refund if an airline significantly delays their checked bags (more than 12 hours for domestic flights and 15 to 30 hours for international flights), or if the airline doesnât provide the ancillary services a passenger purchased like Wi-Fi, seat selection, and in-flight entertainment. Airlines will now be required to issue a refund automatically without a passenger having to request one. The refund must be in the form of cash or the original form of payment, and airlines cannot substitute travel vouchers or other forms of compensation unless the passenger willingly accepts it.
The new rules are part of the DOTâs ongoing effort to expand airline passenger rights and address so-called âjunk fees.â They also spell out when travelers are owed a refund, taking it out of the airlinesâ hands and making the policy the same for every carrier,
âPassengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them - without headaches or haggling,â Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement shared with T+L. âOur new rule sets a new standard to require airlines to promptly provide cash refunds to their passengers.â
When it comes to surprise fees, the DOT will require airlines to tell travelers up front what they charge for a first or second checked bag , a carry-on bag, or for canceling or changing a reservation . The fees cannot be displayed through a hyperlink.
Buttigieg said the new rule âwill save passengers over half a billion dollars a year in unnecessary or unexpected fees by holding airlines accountable for being transparent with their customers.â
The new rule does not address family seating fees, but the DOT said it plans to propose a separate rule tackling that. Last year, the DOT launched an online family seating dashboard laying out the policies of 10 major U.S. airlines.
