Adam Sandler Would Like You to Manage Your Expectations Before Seeing Italy

This week’s episode of Saturday Night Live was primarily a nostalgia trip fueled by the incongruous sight of Adam Sandler back in Studio 8H. But one sketch would have killed even without being placed in the context of the Adam Sandler Televisual/Cinematic Universe or the even more popular Aging Gen Xers Who Are Looking Mortality in the Eye, Perhaps for the First Time Universe. Meet Joe Romano, a travel agent who is extremely worried you might be expecting more from your trip to Italy than he can deliver:

There’s a bit of a fake-out here: Initially, the premise seems to be something along the lines of Dan Aykroyd’s “ E. Buzz Miller’s Art Classics ,” as Sandler explains his family’s generational commitment to showing the wonders of Italy to “people from all over the world, but mostly Long Island and Jersey.” But the sketch takes an unexpected and delightful turn about a minute in, when Sandler turns toward the camera and begins lecturing the audience about not pinning their hopes for a better life on tourism:

People love us. But every so often a customer leaves a review that they were disappointed or didn’t have as much fun as they thought. So here at Romano Tours, we always remind our customers, “If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there, OK? You understand? That makes sense?”

There’s nothing funnier than a sketch in which a familiar television form is distorted and ruined by one character’s monomaniacal weirdness, but the last great example was Louis C.K.’s “ Sectionals ” ad, a sketch that has since been distorted and ruined, along with the rest of C.K.’s body of work, by one character’s monomaniacal weirdness . So it’s good to see the form is still alive and well. But what’s interesting about this variation is that Joe Romano may be weird, but he is also essentially correct. Where’s the lie here?

A day is a long time to feel happy, for all of it. Most of us get 45 minutes if we’re lucky.

The reason it is incongruous and funny for Sandler to admit this in a travel ad is that denying that basic fact about the human experience is the foundation of modern advertising. By the way, “Romano Tours” is four minutes and 11 seconds long. If you liked it, you’re just 40 minutes and 49 seconds away from one of the happiest days of your entire life.

SNL ’s Brutally Honest Tour Guide Wants to Temper Vacation Expectations for You

Portrait of Devon Ivie

We didn’t think we’d be getting four free minutes of therapy when clicking on this Adam Sandler sketch , but, well, here we are, and we have a lot to think about with our (nonrefundable, ugh ) summer plans. Word to the wise: Are you trying to travel away from your problems? Are you mentally in a place to travel at all? Sandler’s tour guide, pissed at the occasional negative review of his Italian adventures, has some words of wisdom you need to swallow. “If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there,” he explains. “If you were sad where you are, and then you get on a plane to Italy, you in Italy will be the same sad you from before, just in a new place.” He just wants to be very clear what these tours can and can’t do for you, okay? “It cannot fix deeper issues, like how you behave in group settings or your general baseline mood. That’s a job for incremental lifestyle changes sustained over time,” he adds. “This may sound rude, but I’m trying to temper expectations.” All of a sudden, a Paddington 2 rewatch sounds way better than a Venice day trip.

Aside from acting, Sandler's extensive portfolio includes a significant deal with Netflix. His partnership with Netflix began in 2014, with a four-movie deal that has since been renewed for over $250 million. His first original film for Netflix, The Ridiculous 6, became the most viewed movie in Netflix history within 30 days of its release. A producer, Sandler founded his film production company, Happy Madison Productions, in 1999. In 2023, Sandler was awarded the title of the best-paid actor in Hollywood.

A message from Steve Perillo:

If you’re sad where you are and then you get on a plane to Italy, the sad you in Italy will be the same sad you from before, just in a new place. Does that make sense? – Joe Romano

Joe knows what he is talking about. How do I know? Joe is me! Let me explain.

I woke up on Sunday morning to a flurry of texts and voicemails. No, I had no idea that Adam Sandler would be playing me on Saturday Night Live , or actually playing my alter-ego “Joe Romano,” a guy from NJ with a beard whose family has run Italy tours for “two generations” mostly to folks”from Long Island and Jersey.”

Haven’t seen it? Watch the skit

adam sandler travel agency

The whole thing was spooky. It was like Adam Sandler read my mind.

Joe says, “There’s a lot a vacation can do: help you unwind, see some different looking squirrels.” I’m always talking about how Italian squirrels look different – they are more red!

Many thanks to Adam Sandler and Saturday Night Live for the thrill of a lifetime.

You can see the REAL Perillo TV commercial here:

adam sandler travel agency

And my friends, if you can accept the fact that I can’t change the “sad you”, I’d love to invite you on a real PERILLO (not Romano) Tour of Italy .

We take care of everything for you – stay in lovely, centrally located hotels, see the sites with the best tour guides in all the land, eat the food that Italy is known for the world over and experience a particular kind of magic – that hopefully won’t make you sad!

I’ve spent years personally refining them and picking out only the best of the best from the restaurants to the vineyards we visit. If you need help figuring out the best our Italy tours for you, give us a call at 800-431-1515.

How to Have the Adam Sandler Vacation of Your Dreams

A definitive travel guide, culled from a decade’s worth of bad but well-located movies

(Getty Images/Ringer illustration)

It’s a wide world out there. From the 3,500-foot-deep canyons of Waimea, Hawaii, to the fertile plains of South Africa to the bustling borough of Manhattan, New York City, this spinning ball of rock that we call Earth offers an adventure around every corner. The flashing lights of Hollywood, the majestic antiquity of Puerto Rico’s capital city — no matter which direction your heart is being pulled, rest assured film and comedy star Adam Sandler has shot a movie there .

Mr. Sandler is not merely the provider of over 500 million hours of entertainment , according to Netflix’s mysterious viewing algorithms; he is also a modern-day explorer. Often known as the "James Bonds of Comedy," Sandler’s films are globe-trotting affairs that use moviemaking as an excuse to see the world and provide stunning scenery and glimpses at exotic locales. (Not to mention a hearty laugh or two!) Now, you can experience that jet-setting lifestyle. The Adam Sandler Travel Guide puts you in the actor’s iconic, years-old sneakers and XXL basketball shorts, using his exaggeratedly extravagant set locations as a map for adventure. Do you want to take the rom-com that is your life on safari? What about making a return trip to Hawaii , even if everyone in your family still remembers the first one ? The Adam Sandler Travel Guide has trip ideas for everyone. So what’s stopping you? Go forth and live a Sandler life — the adventure starts below.

Los Angeles

(Netflix)

Sandy Wexler , Sandler’s most recent film, takes us back to the L.A. of the 1990s: a time of Tower Records, comedy clubs, and sprawling hillside mansions. It’s Sandler’s first Los Angeles film since 2009’s Funny People .

What to Do: Make like longtime (and sad-sack) talent manager Sandy Wexler and scout for talent at The Comedy Store! Witness the growth of on-the-rise stars like Colin Quinn With a Wig, and Kevin James’s permed and racist ventriloquist. Alternatively, catch a very famous and (for now) terminally ill comedian at the same club .

(Netflix)

Where to Stay: The house where they also shot Billy Madison , we’re pretty sure.

(Netflix)

Know Before Visiting: Definitely visit Disneyland, but do so with the knowledge that Jennifer Hudson is probably not singing in a park theater performance of The Ugly Duckling every 12 minutes. (That feature was exclusive to Mr. Sandler’s film.) Also note that Wexler’s version of the Atkins diet — exclusively meat, eaten sloppily — should not be followed to the letter. It is more difficult than you would think to start your day in Los Angeles with a bodega coffee (there are no bodegas) and a copy of Variety (there are no newsstands), as seen in Sandy Wexler . Try Starbucks and the internet.

Interesting Fact: Wexler’s preferred driving range — Weddington Golf and Tennis, in the charmingly low-key San Fernando Valley — is often overrun by rude teens cutting class.

New York City

(Image Entertainment)

An essential stop on any Sandler swing, New York, N.Y., is home to several classics, like Mr. Deeds , Big Daddy , and, of course, The Cobbler.

What to Do: Visit the borough’s famed Chinatown, but skip the dim sum and the knock-off purse-shopping on Canal Street. Instead, head a few blocks north on Forsyth Street, where you’ll find a quaint shoe repair store that just might sell you a pair of oxfords that’ll allow you to inhabit the body of your dead father, so that your mother might get to dance with "him" one last time.

Where to Stay: The lofts of Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood are wonderfully hip, grandly spacious, and remarkably inexpensive — one needs only to be a tollbooth operator with supplementary income from a civil lawsuit to afford them.

Know Before Visiting: Though McDonald’s once served breakfast until only 10:30 a.m. , that rule no longer exists; McDonald’s breakfast will be available to you all day long.

Interesting Facts: It is illegal to slam on your brakes in the middle of the Queensboro Bridge. There are thousands of food delivery men in the city of New York; only one of them will hang out with you after dropping off your order.

(Columbia Pictures)

In 2011’s Just Go With It, Sandler returned to Hawaii, where he’d also filmed 2004’s 50 First Dates.

What to Do: Relax! You go to Hawaii to hit the reset button and also to pretend that your assistant is your soon-to-be ex-wife on a last-ditch family vacation because you met your current flame under the pretense that you, actually a single man, were in fact mid-divorce.

Where to Stay: Whichever fancy Maui resort you had the most rewards points at.

Know Before Visiting: You’re beautiful just the way you are! Do not get a makeover so that you will be believable as Adam Sandler’s former spouse. This lesson is both reprehensible and extremely unnecessary.

Interesting Fact: Nicole Kidman, Heidi Montag, and Dave Matthews (he of the Band) are in the film Just Go With It .

South African Safari

(Warner Bros. Pictures)

Vacations masquerading as film shoots took a literal turn when Mr. Sandler took a vacation to South Africa to make Blended, a movie that is actually about a vacation, in 2014.

What to Do: Go on safari, of course! Now’s your chance to see giraffes, elephants, and ostriches in their natural habitat. (Something to keep in mind for parents of young children: The lions will eat the baby warthogs.)

Where to Stay: The Palace of the Lost City, a charming, accommodating hotel with an extensive in-house entertainment staff, led by the Old Spice guy . The cultural insensitivity may feel jarring; then again, you did sign up for the Adam Sandler experience.

Know Before Visiting: Do not ride the ostriches. Mr. Sandler rides the ostriches in Blended , but do not do this; the ostriches will eat your face.

Interesting Fact: According to a National Safety Transportation Board report in 2014, 3 million to 5 million people go parasailing every year, but only eight have died doing so since 2009.

The American Southwest

(Netflix)

Sandler’s 2015 movie The Ridiculous 6 took him to the great Southwest — New Mexico, specifically. Let’s call this one an educational vacation.

What to (Not) Do: Ride horses, shoot guns, and drink plenty of whiskey in a way that is deeply offensive (and also not really funny) in 2017. This was a bad look.

Where to Stay: With Rapping Mark Twain.

Know Before Visiting: Good rule of thumb: You should not spend your time in the American Southwest propagating a racist and not-funny image of Native Americans .

Interesting Fact: Baseball was invented in New Mexico in the 1800s.

Puerto Rico

(Netflix)

Perhaps desperate for some "bro time," Mr. Sandler and his longtime pal David Spade decamped to Puerto Rico for the rip-roaring 2016 film The Do-Over.

What to Do: Puerto Rico is the perfect place to get away — from your boring job, your annoying wife, the kids who don’t respect you. What we’re saying is Puerto Rico is an ideal place to relocate to after faking your death. Also, the water sports are amazing.

Where to Stay: Why not stick with the nautical theme and rent a boat (that is hopefully named "Happy Madison")? Just be forewarned that said boat will be rigged to explode as part of the plot to fake your death.

Know Before Visiting: In the 1987 court case Puerto Rico v. Branstad , the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that U.S. extradition laws do extend to territories.

Interesting Fact: The Do-Over is secretly an extremely dark and sad film.

Travels from: available upon request, about adam sandler, adam sandler biography.

Comedian actor writer and producer -- as well as former Saturday Night Live castmember -- Adam Sandler is the man behind a genre of comedy blockbusters such as Billy Madison in 1995 and The Waterboy in 1998. Sandler's character creations are known for being hapless moronic outsiders entangled in absurdly improbable circumstances. But critics be damned the adolescent-skewed offerings proved to be box office gold and Sandler has repeated his success with endless variations on the same formula - including producing similar films starring good friends David Spade and Rob Schneider. First parlaying his vulnerable dimwit persona into romantic comedies like The Wedding Singer in '98 Sandler began to show subtler more human shades in other people's works including Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination and James L. Brooks' Spanglish. With his tried-and-true formula beginning to lose audiences to smarter comedies Sandler teamed with Judd Apatow for You Don't Mess with the Zohan in 2008 and Funny People in 2009 which saw Sandler delving deeper into acting than ever before. The comedian continued his softer direction with Grown Ups a reunion picture with many of his SNL buddies.

Adam Sandler ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch spoofs N.J.’s Perillo Tours. ‘If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there.’

  • Updated: May. 06, 2019, 11:27 a.m. |
  • Published: May. 05, 2019, 2:44 p.m.

  • Amy Kuperinsky | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

Anyone who grew up in northern New Jersey will remember the TV commercials fronted by Mario “Mr. Italy” Perillo from Perillo Tours .

Perillo often wore a cream-colored suit as he stood in front of lush scenes of Italy, enticing viewers to take advantage of one of his package deals — airfare included! — to get away from the drudgery of their daily lives.

Perillo Tours , based in Woodcliff Lake, sent generations of New Jerseyans and New Yorkers off on “timeless, romantic, exhilarating" journeys “from the Alps to Sicily.” (Perillo died in 2003 and his son, Steve Perillo , now presides over the company and the commercials.)

Adam Sandler’s first hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend (yes, first!) brought many winning sketches and songs . One of the bits starring the former “SNL” cast member, who piloted a successful movie career after he was fired from the show in 1995, was a clear sendup of Perillo’s commercials, only with a more realistic bent.

In the sketch, called “Romano Tours,” Sandler, 52, tries to sell his trips to Italy while offering a sobering caveat: “If you’re sad now, you might still feel sad there. OK? Ya understand, that makes sense?"

“For two generations, my family has provided high-quality tours of Italy to people from all over the world, but mostly Long Island and Jersey," says Sandler’s Joe Romano.

But due to some not-so-favorable customer reviews, he cautions customers against expecting too much. For example, Romano Tours can bring them to the Italian Riviera, he says, but cannot make them feel comfortable in a bathing suit.

“Remember, you’re still going to be you on vacation,” Romano says.

“There’s a lot a vacation could do: help you unwind, see some different-looking squirrels," he says. “But it cannot fix deeper issues, like how you behave in group settings or your general baseline mood. That’s a job for incremental lifestyle changes sustained over time.”

Adam Sandler is going back on the road!

The comedian, 57, announced on social media Wednesday that he'll be embarking on a comedy tour in North America from October to December, with 25 dates in total throughout the U.S. and Canada. The run of shows, titled the I Missed You Tour , is set to kick off Oct. 12 in Vancouver.

"Let’s have some fun," Sandler captioned an Instagram trailer, which included clips of him playing the guitar, taking some crowd selfies at a handful of shows and getting plenty of laughs.

The latest run of shows follows the Uncut Gems actor's Adam Sandler LIVE gigs, which concluded in April. The I Missed You Tour — which is produced by Live Nation — features stops in Portland, San Jose, Toronto, Memphis, Salt Lake City, Rochester, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, and beyond — with a final date on Dec. 12 in Denver.

Live Nation ticket presale kicks off at 12 p.m. local time on Thursday, with a Ticketmaster general sale starting at 12 p.m. local time on Friday.

Actor Pauly Shore shared his excitement under Sandler's Instagram post with the comment, "Daaaaa Sand man is back boom boom broozzz."

Sandler's tour announcement arrives shortly after he and his family starred in the Netflix teen film You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah , which followed the crew as they navigated planning the perfect bat mitzvah.

Adam and wife Jackie Sandler's daughters — Sunny , 14, and   Sadie , 17 — play the roles of two teens as the film "chronicles the high comedy and modern teen angst that comes with family, friendship, and first crushes," per a synopsis .

"What’s really funny is right before we started prepping for the film,  Sunny  had her actual bat mitzvah," director Sammi Cohen told PEOPLE in August of the film. "So I went to that service, and we got to do the real-life bat mitzvah and then left to make the movie. It was a really fun life movie moment."

"It was really, really fun. And it was, again, it was just such a perfect moment of life meets movie. It was just magical."

In March, Sandler was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The honor came as   Jennifer Aniston ,  Chris Rock ,  Pete Davidson , and more toasted the Saturday Night Live alum for his decades in show business.

Rob Schneider also shared a few kind words with his friend at the event, while performing a rendition of Sandler's "Grow Old With You" from  The Wedding Singer soundtrack.

"Nobody gave Adam Sandler his success. Adam earned this through his hard work in a really tough business, show business," Schneider said. "People ask me: why does Adam put me in so many movies? And it's because he wants to laugh and share his tremendous success with his friends, plus I will do really humiliating s--- that he won't do."

"Adam is a very generous guy,"  David Spade  also shared. "He has hired his whole family tree to work for him. The call sheet looks like Ancestry.com."

Sandler thanked his friends and family when collecting his award after several hilarious speeches, noting that "everybody was great."

"I feel like everyone who came and spoke up there, I think we all truly love each other," he said. "We have each other's backs for life. People always would ask me those bad reviews you get, how does that make you feel, like s---? It really doesn't. I think the reason I get to say it didn't hurt me is because so many of you guys in this room made me feel great about what we've done together."

Donetsk has a population of around a million people, making it the fifth largest city in the country . Donetsk is the unofficial capital of Donets Basin ( Donbass ) region , the most industrialized part of the country, and as with the surrounding region, it is mostly populated by ethnic Russians, who consistently favour pro-Russian candidates in the elections.

The swift development of Donetsk began in 1869 due to John Hughes, a Welsh businessman, who started to exploit the coal mines on what was then the southern reaches of the Russian Empire, and established the local steel industry , founding "Yuzovka" (Hughes' village) . It was renamed "Stalino" and greatly expanded during the Soviet period.

World War II shook the city hard, leaving it not much more than mounds of rubbles. After the war, the city was extensively rebuilt, losing its original layout and architecture reminiscent of British towns. After Stalin's death, it was as well renamed Donetsk.

Donetsk's Donbass Arena was one of the venues for UEFA Euro 2012 , the only European football championship that took place in Eastern Europe so far, which was jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine.

Climate [ edit ]

Lying on the Eurasian steppe inland from the sea, Donetsk has a typical continental climate : While temperatures lower than -30°C (-25°F) were recorded, a more realistic expectation from winter lows (Oct–May) would be -7°C (19°F). Summers , on the other hand, can go up as much as 38°C (100°F), although expecting around 27°C (81°F) would be more typical.

While spring and summer months (May–Jul) are statistically the wettest, rains are more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. But an average year sees about 492 mm (19.37 inches) of precipition anyway, which is about half of what is typical for oceanic climates common in northwestern Europe .

Get in [ edit ]

Donetsk International airport was destroyed in the war in 2014.

By car [ edit ]

The drive from Kyiv can be 6-8 hours depending on how fast you drive, how many stops you make, etc.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Public transportation [ edit ]

Public transportation is cheap but can be crowded. Be prepared to stand up most of the time, and you may have to make waves when you want to get out. There are four main types: the trolleybus, bus, tram and minibuses ( marshrutki ) . Trams and buses will get you just about anywhere in the city for a fixed price for as long as you want to be on the tram or bus. Tickets are to be bought from the conductor, which is on board of every tram and bus. At the central market there is one of the many depots. These forms of transport stop at every stop on the route.

Semi-public transportation (minibuses) [ edit ]

The minibuses (singular marshrutka , plural marshrutki ) operated by non-municipal companies can be found throughout the city. They are like the buses, but faster, smaller, and they stop on request. If you are on board you must yell to the driver that you want out at the next stop, and if you are waiting for one, you must flag it down. Depending on the driver, these can get very crowded.

Taxi [ edit ]

Most tourists find the taxi to be their best option. Taxi cabs are on every corner and they are relatively cheap.

There are numerous dispatch taxi services. For example, 381-0000 or 0-67. Keep your eyes open for more numbers, usually printed on the side of the cab in large font.

Also, on the first ride in the taxi, ask the driver if he would like to drive you around on a regular basis. Usually, they will be delighted to do so and give you their ID number for dispatch ( pozivnoi ) or their cell phone so you can call him directly. That way, you can have a chauffeur for the time of your stay.
