The 28-foot travel trailer features custom furniture based on Pottery Barn designs, as well as canvas storage for flexible stowing, and what has been described as a timeless design aesthetic typical of the Pottery Barn brand. The Globetrotter Travel Trailer

The Globetrotter is another great option for travelers, with an iconic European-inspired interior and American hard shell exterior. While the basic model is about five feet shorter than the Classic, the Globetrotter boasts up to six spacious floor plans, and buyers can choose between two twin beds or one large queen bed in either the front or rear of the trailer. Able to sleep up to six people as opposed to the Classic’s five, sporting stainless steel appliances and a beloved Franke faucet within a modern interior design, the vehicle does have great Wi-Fi capabilities but doesn’t seem to have the smart device capabilities of the Classic. Although it's on the small size, the Caravel has a stainless steel gas stove with cast-iron burners, Baraldi vents, a special edition Black Moen faucet, and a rectangular stainless sink. It has panoramic front and rear windows, electronic air conditioning as opposed to smart device controls, and a spacious rear bath in the 22FB Caravel floor plan that expands into the entirety of the back of the trailer. The Caravel starts at $70,000.

Bambi Travel Trailer side view & interior seating view

The Bambi Travel Trailer

For years, the Airstream Bambi was a simple, single-axle travel trailer. However, Airstream is now launching Bambi as its own family of lightweight, space-maximizing options, with four unique floor plans that span 16 to 22 feet in length, sleep up to four people, and provide the perfect tent-up experience. This model is perfect for one-off adventures and includes features such as stainless steel appliances in the kitchenette, a retractable awning for outdoor shading, and roll-top lockers. The space-saving interior offers plenty of maneuverability in the dinette area and bathroom. There is even an outdoor showering option attached to the Bambi line, so this makes for a great exploration travel trailer, with a relatively low starting price of $56,500.

Basecamp Travel Trailer by riverside

The Basecamp Travel Trailer

Last but certainly not least, the Basecamp Travel Trailer is the smallest and most self-contained of all of Airstream’s travel trailers. Built to go wherever your sense of adventure wants to go, the Basecamp is a small camping trailer that has the comforts to allow you the rest you need in between your activities and journeys into the world. Featuring a bathroom, a lounge area that turns into a sleeping area, and a functioning kitchen, the small trailer holds all the amenities that one needs. With a measurement of 16 or 20 feet in length and able to sleep up to four people, the Basecamp pairs perfectly with midsize SUVs, as its available larger wheels and aggressive departure angle make it perfect for off-roading. It also features an attachable exterior tent, giving you more room overall. This model starts at $43,900.

2023 Airstream Models Explained:

Which airstream model travel trailer is best in 2023.

If there is one thing that Airstream does consistently, its updating their campers in line with evolving customer expectations. In 2023, you can expect plenty of clever and functional improvements on all Airstream travel trailer lineups. Here are the customer-centric upgrades you can expect in the new silver bullets.

Updates Across the Airstream Travel Trailer Lineup for 2023

 • High-Performance Merlin Solar Panels – The 2023 Airstream trailers will include high-performance 100-watt flexible solar arrays. They are aerodynamic, military-grade, work in all light conditions, have higher-UV resistance, and are more powerful than the previous generation. Depending on your trailer’s size, you can expect 2 solar panels (200 watts) or 3 panels (300 watts)
 • Flexible Battery Options – In 2023, customers will have the option to pick the batteries that work best for their adventures once the trailer arrives at the dealership. This flexibility will enable you to have house batteries that match the lifestyle you want to pursue, whether boondocking in the wild or camping in developed RV parks.
 • Redesigned Media Console – To make the most of the available space, the upcoming Airstream won’t have a Blu-Ray/DVD player. Instead, they will have a HDMI port, 110v outlet, and USB ports. These new features give you more flexibility when you want to stream, plug in a gadget, or power up.
 • 12-volt TVs – With the exception of the Classic model, all Airstream trailers will arrive with a more energy-efficient TV that can operate on DC power.

Airstream nest travel trailers.

The Airstream Nest model is the result of Airstream’s 2016 purchase od Nest Caravans in Oregon. The Airstream Nest model has a significantly different look than the classic aluminum shell Airstream models. The Airstream Nest features a molded fiberglass shell.

airstream travel trailer models

The Airstream Nest has a listed length of 16′ 7″ making it slightly longer than the 16-foot Airstream Sport model. The Airstream Nest also has a base weight of 3,400 lbs, making it an attractive lightweight travel trailer.

This Airstream model sleeps 2 people on an almost queen-sized bed and lists for $45,900.

This model has now been discontinued by Airstream

Airstream Basecamp Travel Trailers

airstream travel trailer models

The Airstream Basecamp travel trailer model is another new Airstream model that was first introduced in 2007, but poor sales led Airstream to discontinuing this travel trailer model until 2017 when then second-edition Airstream Basecamp was launched.

The Airstream Basecamp is one of the lightest Airstream travel trailer models, weighing in at 2,585 pounds in its base configurations. That lightweight design makes the Airstream Basecamp light enough where even some cross-over vehicles can tow it safely

Airstream Bambi Travel Trailers

The Bambi has been the nickname for the smaller Airstream models for years, but Airstream has now decided to develop an official Bambi travel trailer line. The Bambi model is another light weight single-axle travel trailer model with floor plans ranging from 16-feet to 22-feet in length.

The 16-foot Airstream Bambi trailer has a trailer weight of just 3000 lbs with propane and batteries, and a gross trailer weight of 3,500 lbs, making it another lightweight Airstream travel trailer under 4,000 pounds.

The 22-foot Airstream Bambi floor plan weighs in a little heavier with a maximum gross trailer weight (GVWR) of 5000 lbs.

Airstream Caravel Travel Trailers

The Airstream Caravel models fills out Airstream’s smaller travel trailer selections. The Caravel model offers four floor plans in lengths from 16 to 22 feet on a single-axle trailer. The Caravel stands as an upgrade from the Bambi models, adding the front aluminum rock guards and a rear polished bumper for added storage.

Airstream also has upgraded the manual hitch jack on the Bambi to a powered hitch jack on the Caravel Airstream models, along with upgraded stability jacks.

The Caravel interior also features upgraded upholstery and improved fixtures such as replacing the plastic toilet in the Bambi models with a porcelain toilet in the Caravel.

Airstream Flying Cloud Travel Trailers

The Airstream Flying Cloud is the first full series Airstream model with trailer lengths ranging from 23 to 30 feet in length. The Airstream Flying Cloud also comes in several sleeping configurations with either two twin beds or a single queen-sized bed.

The Airstream Flying Cloud was my first introduction to Airstream ownership and I’ve been living in my Airstream full-time .

Living full time in an Airstream

Because of the multiple floor plans and sizes, the Airstream Flying Cloud has been one of Airstream’s most popular travel trailer models.

Airstream International Serenity Travel Trailers

The next Airstream model above the Flying Cloud is the Airstream International Serenity. The International Serenity Airstream model is the first of what I would consider the “higher-end” Airstream models (with the Globetrotter and Classic).

The International Serenity model offers 12 different floor plans in trailer lengths from 23 to 30 feet. Seven of the floor plans offer one queen-size bed while the other five floor plans feature two twin beds.

The Airstream International Serenity has an upgraded interior with panoramic windows as well as three different interior decor options.

Airstream Globetrotter Travel Trailers

The Airstream Globetrotter models also offer trailer lengths from 23 to 30 feet, but with just 8 different floor plans (compared to the International Serenity’s 12 floor plans). Like most other Airstream models, the Globetrotter offers either a queen-sized bed or two twin bed sleeping options.

\The Globetrotter also features Corian countertops and four different decor and interior designs include a dark walnut or natural elm cabinetry style.

The top of the line Airstream model continues to be the Airstream Classic. Designed for extended trips or full-time Airstream living, the Airstream Classic comes in only two lengths, as a 30-foot and 33-foot trailer.

The 30-foot Airstream Classic features a top-of-the-line kitchen with Corianders counter tops, Kohler faucet and Baraldi refrigerator and oven.

airstream travel trailer models

The living area of the Airstream Classic models offer six different interior decors ranging from their Comfort White with Earl Grey Ultraleather to a Cognac Maple with Chestnut Ultraleather option.

Airstream continues to build upon an American classic design. The full line of Airstream models offer a configuration to fit almost any Airstream-lover’s life with the options ranging from a small 16-foot Nest and Basecamp to the luxurious 33-foot Airstream Classic.

Ever wonder why are Airstreams so expensive? We break it down and include an inside look at the Airstream production facility in Ohio.

The 8 Best-Selling Airstream Models Available Today!

Airstream Travel Trailer

Airstreams have been popular for the better part of a century now.

Thanks to their stylish exteriors, well-laid-out interiors, and premium features.

If you’re thinking about purchasing an Airstream though, you might be wondering what the best-selling and most popular Airstreams are .

As it’s easy to become overwhelmed with decision overload, as Airstream currently produces nine different travel trailer lineups with many trim levels for each as well as six different touring coaches or Class B RVs .

So to help narrow things down and make it a little less confusing, we did a ton of research to find the most popular and best-selling Airstream models available today .

Most Popular and Best-Selling Airstream Models (Least to Most Expensive)

1. airstream basecamp 16x, quick specs.

 • Price : $52,000
 • Length : 16 Feet 2 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 2,650 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 2
 • Bathroom : 2-Piece Wet Bath

The Airstream Basecamp 16X, which is the upgraded version of the standard Basecamp 16 is not only one of the most popular Airstream models but it’s also one of the cheapest.

As the Basecamp 16X has an average price of $52,000.

And while that might not seem all the affordable, especially when compared to other similar-sized travel trailers from other brands, which often cost half as much.

When you compare the price of the Basecamp 16X and its big brother the Basecamp 20X (#2 on this list), to other Airstreams, the Basecamp lineup is significantly cheaper.

As many Airstream travel trailers cost well over $100,000 and many Airstream touring couches cost well over $200,000.

Airstream Basecamp 16X Floor Plan

Airstream Basecamp 16X Floorplan

Despite the more affordable price of the Airstream Basecamp 16X though, it’s actually one of the most capable travel trailers Airtstream makes.

As the Basecamp 16X offers a complete departure from Airstream’s classic “Silver Bullet” design and was built from the ground up to be the ultimate adventure trailer and off-grid camper.

Offering tons of off-road and off-grid friendly features.

Including such features as a 3-inch lift kit, Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires, a 200W roof-mounted solar package, good size holding tanks, an enclosed aluminum insulated heated underbelly, and 12V tank heaters.

For more information on the Airstream Basecamp 16X, be sure to check out Airstream’s website by clicking here .

2. Airstream Basecamp 20X

 • Price : $61,000
 • Length : 20 Feet 2 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 3,500 Pounds
 • Sleeping Capacity : 4

The Airstream Basecamp 20X, which is the upgraded version of the standard Basecamp 20, is the most popular and best-selling airstream model on the market today , according to Airstream .

And much like its little brother the Basecamp 16X (#1 on this list), it was designed from the ground up to be the ultimate off-grid basecamp for adventurous couples or small families.

Built to explore the most remote locations and terrains, while offering all the creature comforts of home.

Airstream Basecamp 20X Floor Plan

Airstream Basecamp 20X Floorplan

As the Basecamp 20X offers a 3-inch lift kit, Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires, a 300W roof-mounted solar package, flexible storage, considerable holding tanks, and an aluminum enclosed underbelly with 12V tank holders.

It’s not just the rugged off-road and off-grid capability of the Basecamp 20X that makes this camper the most popular airstream model though.

Because as mentioned above the Basecamp 20X also allows you to bring all the creature comforts of home.

Airstream Basecamp 20X Interior

As the Airstream Basecamp 20X offers sleeping space for up to four, a full-featured galley, a roof-mounted air-conditioner, a Truma Combi™ Eco Plus heating system, and a small bathroom.

Speaking of the bathroom though, if there was one drawback to the Basecamp trailers it would have to be their cramped two-piece wet bath.

As the Basecamp 20X as well as its little brother the Basecamp 16X has a bathroom that combines the shower and toilet together into a wet space not much bigger than a closet.

For more information on the Airstream Basecamp 20X, make sure to check out Airstream’s website by clicking here .

3. Airstream Bambi 16RB

 • Price : $63,500
 • Length : 16 Feet 1 Inch
 • Dry Weight : 3,000 Pounds

The Airstream Bambi, which is the smallest version of the “Silver Bullet” is another top-selling model for Airstream, thanks to its compact lightweight design.

As the model is considerably smaller and lighter compared to other Airstream campers, like the Flying Cloud and the Globetrotter.

Making the model super popular with customers that have a more limited tow vehicle, such as an SUV or light-duty truck.

Airstream Bambi 16RB Floor Plan

Airstream Bambi 16RB Floorplan

Originally a nickname for Airstream’s smaller single-axle trailers, the smaller “Bambi” style campers proved to be so popular that Airstream eventually made the Bambi nickname official.

By using the name to denote its smallest Silver Bullet trailers.

Available in four different trim levels and floor plans, one of the most popular trim levels is the Airstream Bambi 16RB.

Which also happens to be the smallest and lightest Bambi.

However, despite its small size, the Bambi 16RB still offers all the same features and amenities that you would expect from an Airstream travel trailer.

Airstream Bambi 16RB Interior

Including the iconic rounded all-aluminum exterior, high-end interior styling, and top-end features throughout.

In addition, despite the smaller size of the Bambi 16RB, the camper still offers sleeping space for up to four, a full-featured galley, a convertible dinette booth, and a small two-piece wet bath.

For more info on the Airstream Bambi 16RB, be sure to check out Airstream’s website by clicking here .

4. Airstream Bambi 22FB

 • Price : $71,000
 • Length : 21 Feet 11 Inches
 • Dry Weight : 3,900 Pounds
 • Bathroom : 3-Piece Dry Bath

Another Bambi favorite among Airstream shoppers is the Airstream Bambi 22FB, which is the largest Bambi you can buy, coming in at 21 feet 11 inches.

Despite being the largest Bambi available though, the Bambi 22FB still stays true to its roots.

As the camper is a single-axle trailer like all Airstream Bambis and keeps the weight reasonably low, with a dry weight of less than 4,000 pounds.

Airstream Bambi 22FB Floor Plan

Airstream Bambi 22FB Floorplan

Thanks to the camper’s larger size though, the Bambi 22FB is able to offer features that its smaller counterparts can’t.

Including such features as a front east-to-west bed, a large u-shaped convertible dinette booth, more interior/exterior storage space, and perhaps most important of all, a full three-piece dry bath.

As the Bambi 22FB is the first trailer on this list to offer a complete bathroom, with a separate shower, toilet, and bathroom vanity.

Which is probably one of the main reasons why the 22FB is the favorite Silver Bullet single-axle floor plan available today , according to Airstream.

For additional info on the Airstream Bambi 22FB, check out Airstream’s website by clicking here .

To see even more information on the entire Airstream Bambi lineup, check out our blog post “ How Much is an Airstream Bambi? Full Cost Breakdown “.

5. Airstream Caravel 22FB

 • Price : $86,000

Like the Bambi from above though, one of the most popular floor plans for the Caravel is the Airstream Caravel 22FB, which also happens to be the largest.

Offering the same layout and amenities as the Bambi 22FB, such as a front east-to-west bed, a large u-shaped convertible dinette booth, a full-featured galley, and a three-piece dry bath.

Giving everyone a fixed and dedicated place to sleep, which is nice.

As it eliminates the need to convert a couch or dinette into a makeshift sleeping space that needs to be converted back and forth every day.

There’s more to this large Airstream trailer than just sheer size and sleeping accommodations that make it great for families though.

As the Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk also offers a large central living room, with tons of seating, a large well-equipped galley, and a spacious corner three-piece dry bath in the rear.

 • Price : $135,000
 • Length : 28 Feet
 • Dry Weight : 6,300 Pounds

According to Airstream, the most popular Silver Bullet floor plan they make is the 27FB , which is probably why pretty much every Airstream lineup offers it.

There’s perhaps no better example of this floor plan though than the Airstream Globetrotter 27FB.

As the Globetrotter 27FB provides one of the best versions of the floor plan by offering modern European styling, high-end fixtures, and appliances, and premium finishes throughout.

Airstream Globetrotter 27FB Floor Plan

Designed for travel and adventure, the Globetrotter can trace its roots back to the 1950s.

When Aistream wanted to capture the spirit of its founder Wally Byam and his friend Cornelius Vanderbilt.

When in 1948 they painted the words “Globe Trotters” onto the side of their Airstreams, before shipping them over the Atlantic to explore and travel through Europe.

Beyond its inspiration though, the Globetrotter 27FB, like all 27FB floor plans, offers a very practical and well-laid-out interior.

Offering a six-person sleeping capacity, lots of storage, either a front queen or twin beds, a split three-piece dry bath, a large well-equipped galley, and a spacious rear living area.

In our Airstream VS Oliver comparison, we are going to take a closer look at what these luxury travel trailer manufacturers have to offer and provide you with the information you need to decide which trailer is better for you.

The main differences between Airstream vs Oliver are:

How many different travel trailer models do Airstream and Oliver brands offer?

The list of features, layouts, and specifications Airstream and Oliver brands offer varies from one model to another. Furthermore, their weight, size, and length also vary, which is the reason why you must make sure that your vehicle has the capacity to tow an Airstream or Oliver travel trailer.

Currently, there are only two Oliver travel trailer models on the market and you can choose between:

 • Legacy Elite
 • Legacy Elite II

airstream travel trailer models

Legacy Elite is the smaller of the two travel trailer models Oliver offers, as it has 3,700 lbs of dry weight, while its outside length is just 18’5’’. This means that you don’t need a car that has a huge towing capacity if you opt for a Legacy Elite model.

In addition, the manufacturer doesn’t offer different floor plan options for their Legacy Elite model, although they can be easily customized by adding different upgrades and add-ons.

Even though Legacy Elite II travel trailers can accommodate just three persons, just like Legacy Elite models, they are more spacious and they offer more standard features. You can choose between standard and twin bed floor plans, while you can also select the flooring, add-ons, or upholstery.

Unlike Oliver, Airstream offers a variety of trailer models that come in different sizes and have different sleep capacities. You can choose from the following Airstream travel trailer models:

 • Flying Cloud
 • International Serenity
 • Globetrotter

airstream travel trailer models

The number of available floor plans depends on the model, although only the Basecamp model is available in just two floor plans. Smaller and lighter models like Bambi or Caravel can be easily towed with an SUV, while the Classic or Globetrotter models that are much heavier require a more powerful engine.

What’s more, most of the Airstream models have been on the market for a long while, as the Caravel model was first released in 1956. The list of appliances an Airstream travel trailer offers or their interior design depend on the model, while the manufacturer also offers the option to customize your trailer.

Oliver trailers have a contemporary look that is somewhat similar to the design of most travel trailers you can find on the market. Airstream models, on the other hand, combine a modern and luxurious interior with a classically designed exterior.

Airstream has more to offer to its customers than Oliver, as you can choose from a larger number of beautifully designed models that have all the features you are going to need while you are on the road.

Comparing Oliver’s and Airstream’s facets

Even though both Oliver and Airstream offer luxury travel trailers, their features are not identical. For instance, the body of an Oliver travel trailer is made out of four-piece molded fiberglass with insulation between shells, while the Airstream trailers are made out of two-piece molded fiberglass.

airstream travel trailer models

Furthermore, both manufacturers equip their trailers with Nev-R-Adjust® brakes that are capable of exceptional braking performances regardless of the weather conditions.

A freshwater tank, heating, and air conditioning systems or retractable awning are just a few among numerous standard features both Oliver and Airstream trailers have, although the exact AC model or the capacity of the water tank may vary from model to model.

Both Oliver and Airstream travel trailers can be connected to a solar panel, but you will have to look for an aftermarket solar panel unless you opt for one of the Airstream’s high-end models. An easy access propane port is also available on Oliver and Airstream trailers in case you don’t want to rely on renewable energy sources.

Oliver travel trailers don’t have the capacity to accommodate more than three sleepers or provide more than six seats. The number of sleeping spaces and seats in Airstream trailers depends on the model and how spacious the trailer is.

The Basecamp model for instance is designed for a maximum of two persons, while the Flying Cloud model that is advertised as a family-friendly model has enough room for eight sleepers. Furthermore, you will have plenty of storage space regardless of which Oliver or Airstream model you choose.

The entertainment systems of both Oliver and Airstream travel trailers is remarkable as it includes LCD TVs, DVD players, and excellent sound systems.

In addition, the travel trailers produced by Oliver and Airstream feature USB and 110 V charging outlets that enable you to use different appliances or recharge a Smartphone.

A brief look at the list of facets Oliver and Airstream travel trailers provide reveals that all of their models are equipped with a set of standard features that are essential for an enjoyable trip.

Even though there is no doubt that Oliver travel trailers have excellent features, similarly priced Airstream’s models provide you with more space and a greater variety of gadgets and appliances.

The price difference between Airstream and Oliver travel trailers

On average, a new travel trailer can cost anywhere between $11.000 and $35.000. Even the least expensive Oliver and Airstream models cost more than an average travel trailer, as the cheapest Airstream Basecamp travel trailer can be purchased for $37,900.

Latest Airstream Prices: For the latest pricing on NEW and USED Airstream inventory, check out RVT.com here .

The prices for Oliver’s Legacy Elite travel trailers start at $48,900, but they can easily balloon over $50,000 if you decide to get some of the available add-ons and upgrades.

The Airstream’s Nest model is a bit cheaper than Legacy Elite as its price starts at $42.900, while the Bambi model can be purchased for $49.600. The $700 price difference will get you an extra bunk, an exterior shower, and additional exterior storage.

The Legacy Elite II models are larger than Legacy Elite models, but they are also more expensive as their prices start at $55,900. However, the Legacy Elite II travel trailers have just 3 sleeps, which makes them a poor choice for large families that often enjoy outdoor activities together.

The price of the Airstream’s Caravel model starts at $61,900 for a 16-feet trailer that offers one sleeping space more than the Legacy Elite II model.

The starting prices of Airstream’s Flying Cloud, International Serenity, and Globetrotter models vary between $77,900 and $95,400, while the Classic model can be purchased for $156,400.

It is worth noting that the cost of Oliver and Airstream travel trailers depends on the floor plan, the number of upgrades and add-ons you choose, or the number of beds a trailer has. You can find some of the best RV financing companies here .

Oliver travel trailers don’t offer much more than the least expensive Airstream travel trailers, which is the reason why getting one of the Airstream’s models is a better investment if you are considering buying a luxury travel trailer.

Examining Oliver’s and Airstream’s Floor Plans

airstream travel trailer models

All Airstream’s travel trailers have four or more floor plans, except the Basecamp model, which enables you to choose the floor plan that best fits your needs. For instance, there are four available floor plans for the Nest model, as you can choose from 16FB, 16FB Premiere, 16U, and 16U Premiere options.

Even though the exterior length of each of these floor plans is identical, there are slight variations, because the 16FB Premiere floor plan doesn’t include a 30 AMP Service Single A/C with Heat Strip or a 3.2 cu. Ft. DC/AC 2-Way Electric Refrigerator like all other floor plans.

Furthermore, the Convertible Lounge and Sleeping Accommodation features are only available within the 16U and 16U Premiere floor plans, while the Turf and Needle Adaptive Foam Mattress is only included in 16FB and 6FB Premiere floor plans. Find out more about the best mattress for your RV .

The Oliver Legacy Elite is available in just one floor plan that includes a 74’’x52’’ bed and a fully equipped bathroom. Although this Oliver’s travel trailer is slightly larger than the Airstream’s Basecamp model it is still a more affordable option that offers almost all the features Oliver Legacy Elite does, at a lower price.

If you are considering an Oliver Legacy Elite II travel trailer, you will be able to choose between Standard and Twin Bed floor plans. The Standard floor plan includes a rear table area for five people that can be converted to a 75’’x79’’ bed.

The Twin Bed floor plan includes two beds, SeeLevel II tank monitoring system MaxxFan Deluxe Remote Control Ventilator system and LED floor light. However, the exterior length of both floor plans is the same, and you won’t gain additional space if you opt for the Twin Bed floor plan.

Airstream gives you more versatility as there are multiple floor plans available for each of their models.

A closer look at the appliances Airstream and Oliver offer

Airstream and Oliver travel trailers can be customized in accordance with your needs as the manufacturers let you choose the awning colors, upholstery, and flooring options.

In addition, each of their travel trailer models comes with a standard set of features that includes kitchen appliances, electronic devices, or a variety of safety features. For instance, all Airstream and Oliver travel trailers have burner cooktops but the number of burners and BTUs vary from model to model.

A microwave, movable tabletops, retractable awning, or LCD TVs are just a few among countless standard features Oliver and Airstream travel trailers offer. In addition, each model has DVD players, sound systems, or satellite TV connections, but WiFi or 4G Cell Phone boosters are not included in the standard packages.

We encourage you to check through the entire list of appliances before you choose an Oliver or Airstream travel trailer and make sure that the model you are interested in comes with all devices you need during a road trip.

The Airstream and Oliver models in the same price range feature a similar set of standard appliances, but travel trailers like Airstream Classic or Airstream Globetrotter are furnished with a broader range of advanced home appliances. You can find our ultimate guide to RV maintenance at this link.

In case you are looking for a luxury travel trailer that is equipped with a variety of appliances, Airstream is a better although more expensive option.

Where You Can Stay In An Airstream RV (And How It All Started)

In 1929, Wally Byam, an advertising executive and keen adventurer, built the first Airstream trailer – a teardrop-shaped canvas and Masonite shelter attached to a Ford Model T chassis. His inspiration was his wife Marion, who was fed up camping in draughty tents. It had sleeping space, an ice chest and a stove.

1929: the first Airstream prototype

A year later, Byam published a DIY guide to building a trailer, which sold like hotcakes. Requests for him to construct RVs came flooding in and he opened a small factory in Culver City, California. The Airstream we know today was born out of this operation in 1931 when there were just 50 trailer manufacturers around. In the following five years, this exploded to 400 businesses building trailers to meet the demand, but when the Great Depression and the Second World War hit, the vast majority closed down. The firm outgrew its Californian headquarters by the 1950s and in 1952 Byam opened a larger factory in Ohio. With sales buoyant throughout the decade, Byam further refined his RV line-up and launched "the world's first self-contained trailer" Airstream International in 1958. As America's most luxurious trailers, Airstreams featured the latest modern conveniences, from air conditioning to refrigerators, but they underwent a major redesign in 1969 to give them the smooth, bullet-like edges we know today. That same year, the company was chosen to design and build a mobile quarantine pod for the returning Apollo 11 astronauts, such was its renown.

The hippie counter-culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s popularized RV-ing and house-trucking, and from this point, Airstream began to attract a younger, cooler clientele who became known for customizing their vehicles. By the late 1980s, the Airstream trailer had become an American icon, making Money magazine's "99 things that, yes, Americans make best" list in 1987.

The 1970s: an established American icon

The hippie counter-culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s popularized RV-ing and house-trucking, and from this point, Airstream began to attract a younger, cooler clientele who became known for customizing their vehicles. By the late 1980s, the Airstream trailer had become an American icon, making Money magazine's "99 things that, yes, Americans make best" list in 1987.

The basic design was tweaked in 1994, adding around 5.5 inches (14cm) and remodeling the interior entirely. The Airstream became bigger, more comfortable and better-performing and today that design has prevailed to inspire their newest models. Now, Airstream produces 13 different models of trailers, RVs and motorhomes, making it a modern travel stalwart.

1994: an adventure stalwart

Airstream's current roster of road tripping vehicles and trailers includes this single-axle travel trailer, named Bambi (the nickname their historic single-axle trailers had been unofficially monikered). It has a small double bed inside plus a convertible diner, a kitchenette and an outdoor shower and it has built-in air conditioning and heating – all within just a 16-foot (5m) aluminum build.

You don't have to invest your savings in an Airstream to experience this kind of nomadic luxury, though. They have become a popular offering from glampsites and accommodation providers all over the world. Autocamp parks in California offer some of the most stylishly decorated vintage Airstreams in the USA, while in Britain, there are plenty of static Airstreams to hire for a weekend away. Here are some of the best Airstreams you can rent.

Airstream Trailer Weight: a Guide with Stats for Each Model

Published on July 28th, 2020 by Levi Henley (Full-Time RVer, Content Manager and Media Specialist for RV LIFE)

People see advertisements with mid-size SUVs connected to 25-foot travel trailers. Yet when they see something like an Airstream Caravel in a similar ad, it’s connected to a full-size SUV. Many wonder how much does a 25-foot airstream trailer weigh and why the difference? We’ll show you the average Airstream trailer weight in a guide with stats with each model.

When you look at how much an Airstream Bambi trailer weighs compared to other brands of similar lengths, you’ll see how different they truly are. The construction materials, building methodologies, and components set Airstream apart from all other manufactures in the RV industry.

This difference is part of the reason why 75% of all Airstreams are still on the road today. If you’re looking to buy one of these iconic RVs, understanding their weight is a great start. You’ll need the right tow vehicle, how much you can load them up, and other important facts to properly care for your travel trailer.

Airstream trailer weight terminology.

Airstream trailer parked under the tree

Airstream uses its own terminology to describe various weight values. We’ll define these terms and show you their universally accepted counterparts.

 • Unit Base Weight (UBW): UBW is the Dry Weight or Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW) of the RV. This is the weight of the coach when it’s completely empty.
 • Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR): The GVWR is a universally accepted term. It is a rating the manufacture publishes telling both official governing bodies and consumers what the maximum amount of weight the RV can hold safely.
 • Net Carrying Capacity (NCC): The NCC is universally known as the Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC). It tells owners how much storage weight the coach can hold.
 • Hitch Weight (HW): Other manufacturers refer to this as Tongue Weight (TW). This is the pressure put on the hitch of the tow vehicle. The best weight is between 10-15% of the RV’s Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). If it’s too light, you’ll have a lot of sway. Heavier percentages overstress the vehicle’s suspension and other towing focused parts.

Understanding Tow Weights of Airstream Trailers

Airstreams have three major size levels. All Airstream models within the levels share commonalities that can confuse the untrained eye. Later, we’ll discuss how each model is different from each other.

Meanwhile, to help you start to understand Airstream travel trailers, we’ll show you the shared factors that each level has to help your prepare for the towing weight of an Airstream trailer.

Small Level

Small airstreame parked near house

There are eight models of Airstream travel trailers. Four of them fall under the small lightest weight Airstream category.

Each one of these models has an average GVWR under 4,700 pounds. They also have lengths ranging from 16 to 22 (21.8) feet.

For those looking to balance pulling power with fuel efficiency, mid-size pickups (also known as a quarter-ton) or full-size SUVs are a great option. Allowing about 1,500 pounds for cargo weight, passenger weight, and driving horsepower, you’ll want a vehicle with a towing capacity with at least 6,200 pounds or more.

Mid-Size Level

The mid-size Airstream models include the Flying Cloud, International, and Globetrotter. All three models measure between 23-30 feet in length and have a GVWR of 7,475 pounds.

The best tow vehicle for a 30-foot Airstream in this level or one of the shorter versions must focus on pulling power. Half-ton trucks are going to be your best option for these travel trailers. If you’re looking for an SUV, the Ford Expedition with the heavy tow package has a capacity of up to 9,300 pounds.

Car manufactures have been doing a lot to make their half-ton pickups more fuel-efficient in recent years. Even with the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB weight behind it, your truck will get more miles per gallon today than previous year models.

Full-Size Classic

The Classic is the only model that fits in the full-size category. The GVWR is 10,000 pounds and it comes in either 30 or 33 feet in length. Towing this legendary icon takes real muscle.

Three-quarter ton trucks like the Ram 3500 have the power and size to pull the Classic comfortably. This class of truck has a towing capacity of up to 15,000 pounds. Fuel efficiency isn’t calculated for these heavy-duty trucks, but best estimates are 10 city and around 14 highway.

Certain half-ton trucks with heavy towing packages are capable of towing the Classic. The Ford F-150’s 3.5L EcoBoost V6 has the option to come with a towing capacity of up to 13,000 pounds from the factory. Talk to your truck dealer for more details.

Average Weight by Airstream Model and Other Features

 • Average Dry Weight: 3,075 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 3,900 pounds
 • Average NCC: 850 pounds
 • Average HW: 473 pounds
 • Floorplans: 4
 • Starting Price: $38,400

The Basecamp series started in 2016 and quickly became Airstream’s top-selling model. It started with the 16-foot model. Recently the 20-foot model came into the world with two multi-functional dinettes that fold down for additional sleeping space for four people.

The new “X” version allows your Basecamp to go off-road. The rear hatch allows you to store long items down the center aisle while you’re traveling.

Airstream does a great job keeping the Basecamp protected with the front corner rockguards. They also place all of hookup connections strategically so your mini Silver Bullet looks sleek and stylish driving down the road.

 • Average Dry Weight: 3,350 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 4,000 pounds
 • Average NCC: 700 pounds
 • Average HW: 375 pounds
 • Starting Price: $42,900

Aluminum and Airstream are like peanut butter and jelly. When you think of this RV manufacturer, everyone’s first thought is of an airplane-quality aluminum shell with rounded edges in a twinkie-shaped design. That’s until the Nest came along.

Airstream wanted to try their hand in the fiberglass realm but had little experience with it. Once they found Robert Johans and his design, Airstream knew they had something special. They bought his design, brought him on board, and finished it with the features and quality you would expect from them.

The Nest has a rear entry door, wet bath, and all of the features you could ask for in a 16-foot trailer. It comes with either a front bed or a front dinette that folds down. Critics generally prefer the memory foam bed over the dinette when it comes to comfort, but having the versatility of a U-shaped dinette is worth buying a simple bed topper.

Another interesting point is its overall weight. The Airstream Nest weight (4,000 pounds)is heavier than the Bambi 16-foot version (3,500), but lighter than the 22-foot version (5,000 pounds). The advantage with the Nest is having the same feature of the 22-foot Bambi in the 16-foot Nest.

 • Average Dry Weight: 3,050 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 4,250 pounds
 • Average NCC: 925 pounds
 • Average HW: 485 pounds
 • Starting Price: $49,900

The name “Bambi” has a diverse history with Airstream. In 1961, the company launched a small single-axle travel trailer named Bambi in response to consumers’ desire for smaller travel trailers. After that model fazed out of production, the name continued as a nickname for any small, single-axle Airstream.

A popular model from 2009-2019 was the Airstream Sport. They brought the Bambi back a few years ago in its 16-foot incarnation. Since the new Bambi and Caravel were so similar to the Sport, in 2019, Airstream decided to stop production of the Sport, and expand the Bambi increasing the line to include lengths up to 22 feet.

The Airstream Bambi comes in a 16 rear bed, 19 rear corner bed, or 20 and 22 front bed configuration. It’s the first model that has the traditional Airstream shape. The bright cabinetry and overall interior make it look spacious. The overall features are more standard-issue than it’s sister coach but meet the high bar of Airstream quality.

 • Average Dry Weight: 3,900 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 4,650 pounds
 • Average HW: 528 pounds
 • Starting Price: $62,200

Airstream founder, Wally Byam, had two recreational loves. RVs and boats. That’s why he named the Caravel after a sailing ship. He wanted his customers to feel like they were experiencing the same features of a yacht. This model has stayed in production since 1956.

When you compare the Caravel to the Bambi, you’ll notice upgraded amenities that tip the weight scale a little bit. The floorplans and lengths are the same. Differences include a panoramic rear window, electric hitch jack, and other components of improved luxury.

Unlike the Bambi, you’ll find side and rear awnings for the windows. The Caravel also has a front corner rock guard and a windshield protection shield to maintain shell integrity. This RV also has a classier interior look with name brand components and other high-end touches.

Flying Cloud

 • Average Dry Weight: 5,639 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 7,400 pounds
 • Average NCC: 1,761 pounds
 • Average HW: 781 pounds
 • Floorplans: 14
 • Starting Price: $78,900

Airstream advertised the Flying Cloud as the RV that “flys behind your car” in the 1950s. Airstream played on their aircraft-quality aluminum shells. Decades later, the Flying Cloud returned for today’s RVers to become the most versatile and family-friendly travel trailer in their lineup.

The Flying Cloud now has 14 different floorplans that come in:

 • Rear queen bed
 • Front queen bed
 • Rear corner queen bed
 • Rear double twins beds
 • Front double twins beds
 • Rear lower full size and upper twin size bunk bed

The sofas and dinettes fold-down/out for additional sleeping space allowing large families to sleep up to eight people. Even though Airstreams don’t have slideouts, these travel trailers make great use of space to give everyone their own personal space.

Some of the unique features include a rear hatch on 25 and 27 front bed floorplan to store long items while you’re traveling. There are plenty of USB charging ports and the latest in entertainment technology to keep everyone happy on rainy days. You’ll have all the storage you need for personal items and food to keep your brood’s bellies full.

International

 • Floorplans: 12
 • Starting Price: $91,900

In 1958, Wally Byam and his team introduced the International as the first self-contained travel trailer that was battery powered. It was one of the first RVs that had the capability to boondock with electricity.

Today’s International is the luxury version of the Flying Cloud. It has the same length options (23-30 feet) but doesn’t have the bunk bed or 30-foot rear bed options. Many of the luxury options you find on the Caravel come on the International.

The forest or seashore inspired natural interior brings the outdoors in. You can enhance your experience by allowing the breeze to flow through the coach through all the windows. As you enjoy your new book, you can let the smells and sounds of nature relax you.

When the temperature isn’t ideal, both the air conditioner and heater give you that perfect temperature. The low profile A/C doesn’t have an interior section that sticks out from the ceiling, so you have the best aesthetic look and still receive efficient performance.

Globetrotter

 • Average Dry Weight: 6,144 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 7,550 pounds
 • Average NCC: 1,407 pounds
 • Average HW: 818 pounds
 • Floorplans: 8
 • Starting Price: $96,400

The Globetrotter is unique in its own right due to its adventurous origins. To further advertise his product, and go on a grand adventure Airstream hit Europe by storm. Wally Byam and his friend Cornelius Vanderbilt took a 22-foot model in the 1950s and set out for a worldwide adventure starting in Europe to show how durable his trailer was.

To memorialize that great trek, today’s Globetrotter comes with European-inspired interiors with lengths between 23-30 feet in length. Floorplans feature front or rear bed features. You can choose between the queen or the double twin beds.

The dark wood walls are offset by the bright cabinetry and flooring. Stainless steel appliances and trim give the coach a finished look of high-class appeal. This land yacht travel trailer look has the sophistication that fits the best French districts or contemporary styling of the best crafted Scandinavian decor.

 • Average Dry Weight: 8,025 pounds
 • Average GVWR: 10,000 pounds
 • Average NCC: 1,976 pounds
 • Average HW: 1,031 pounds
 • Starting Price: $157,400

The Classic is an amalgamation of many of Airstream’s previous models. They took the best ideas, the most iconic look, and rolled it into this 30 to 33-foot travel trailer. You’ll see hints of the Argosy, Safari, and Land Yacht. Today’s Classic gets most of its DNA from the 1980s Excella.

The 30-foot version comes in either a rear queen or double twin. The 33-foot has a front queen or double twin. Despite its size, it only sleeps up to five people. The reason for this is its overall purpose. The Classic is primarily designed for full-timers that want that combination of functionality with iconic style.

It features components like a full dry bathroom that takes up the rear section of the coach. A real desk space for those that work from home. Residential size appliances that allow a couple to live comfortable for weeks without restocking. It now comes with a wifi package and mobile device app to control and stay connected to your coach while you’re away.
