Fish Hunt Combo

For years guests have encouraged us to prepare a combination Fishing and Hunting trip, combining the Alaskan Fishing and Alaskan Hunting worlds. We have remained hesitant as the two optimal time periods for each, Summer being best for fishing, and Fall being best for Hunting, barely overlap.

After a lot of research (which was a lot of fun) we’ve decided to offer the last two weeks of September as a Fish Hunt Combo package. During this time we will offer fully guided fishing for Halibut, Rockfish, Cod, and Tanner (Snow) Crab in the salt, Silver Salmon and Steelhead in fresh water, and unguided hunting for Sitka Black Tailed Deer in the mountains.

As specialized weeks focusing on this exact timeframe overlap, we will fix the arrival and departure of each week ahead of schedule; with less flexibility than we do throughout the rest of our seasons. Please check with us if you’re interested in the trip and to find out when the two weeks will start!

Standard in each package:

  • Round trip transportation by boat or a local sea plane charter to Kodiak Raspberry Island Remote Lodge from the Kodiak City Airport.
  • A beautiful location in the remote wilderness surrounded by ocean and 2,000 foot mountains with amazing views of the surrounding flora and fauna, where bear, deer, elk and ducks have all been spotted from within the lodge.
  • All lodging in heated, private guest cabins with beautiful views, complete bathroom, comfortable mattresses, fresh flannel sheets, and down comforters.
  • Comfortable main lodge, boasting the surrounding views, a large lounge with wood stove, rustic furniture and local art, spacious dining room with hand built tables, and a large open kitchen to watch our chef at work and enjoy hors d’oeuvres.
  • Hot tub, hot showers, and hot banya (sauna), including fresh, clean towels, soap and shampoo.
  • Laundry facility for guests’ use.
  • Twenty-four hour hydroelectric generated electricity, backed up by a quiet diesel generator, only if needed.
  • Wireless internet.
  • Plentiful, hot, home cooked meals focusing on what your body needs to do the work you’ll be doing. Meals typically feature pastas, steaks, fresh salads, home made breads, and daily made desserts.
  • Daily prepared field lunches, including snacks.
  • Complimentary beer on tap brewed in Kodiak by the Kodiak Island Brewing Company and wines paired to the evening meal .
  • No Smoking Property, including on our fishing boats, effective spring of 2018. Smokers are welcome to smoke on one of our beaches in front of the property.
  • Fully guided and outfitted fishing.
  • Fully guided daily drop off and pick up hunting with a registered big game guide.
  • Complete fish processing, vacuum sealing, and freezing.
  • Daily drop off and pick up from a heated, comfortable boat operated by a Coast Guard Licensed Captain and Transporter.
  • Meat storage in our large meat house safe from bears.
  • Trophy preparation for your taxidermist by your registered big game guide and basic meat preparation and boxing for transport to your butcher.
  • Gift store at the lodge to browse through at guests’ leisure.
  • Any necessary land use permits to hunt and fish on private property.

Our price does not include:

  • Hunting and fishing licenses and deer tags available at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game
  • Butchering of your deer meat. You can have it butchered in Kodiak or Anchorage and shipped home, or transfer it to us if you don’t want the meat.
  • Transport of your fish/game back to home from Kodiak City.

Typical Length of Stay

Due to the nature of the wide spectrum of hunts that Kodiak Wilderness Adventures provides, we do not have a single “typical ” length of stay during the hunting seasons, however here are a few of the hunt durations that we provide:

  • Kodiak Brown Bear, 10 days/15 days
  • Sitka Blacktail Deer, 5 days/6 nights (from lodge)
  • Sea Duck & combination Sea Duck & Sitka Blacktail Deer, 5 days/6 nights

Arrival & Departure Details

Dates are built around the weekly calendar and we have tailored our fishing trip schedule to coincide with a weekend arrival and departure. Guests arrive on Sunday and typically depart on the following Saturday. Our Brown Bear hunts are scheduled to coincide with the season opening in the fall (October 25th) and the season closing date in the Spring (May 15th.) The arrival and departure dates on the Brown Bear hunts are somewhat flexible! We prefer to have the shorter hunts begin on a Sunday for the convenience of a weekend arrival, however for the conveyance of travel on the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry vessels, The M/V Tustemena & M/V Kennicot we will work our schedule to meet yours.

Departures are a very busy time around the lodge as we prepare our guests for their journey back to their homes or on to the next stop in their adventure in the Northland. We encourage our guests to book their flights from Kodiak to Anchorage no earlier than mid-morning (10:30 am).

Learn more about arranging travel to Kodiak Wilderness Adventures Lodge on our Getting to Kodiak page.

Accommodations & Lodging

While on a hunt that is run from our lodge here in port Lions, hunting guests are accommodated in our Coho-Nook Inn . This 4,500 square foot facility has four guest rooms on the first floor. Each room has its own private bathroom. This facility offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and the waters of Settlers Cove are just a short stroll from our front door. The spacious and comfortable accommodations are very home-like, with our guests’ needs first and foremost in mind.

Food & Beverage

While at the lodge, meals are prepared with the attention to detail that one can expect at a gourmet restaurant and served family style in our large 1,000 square foot 2nd story living / dining area. Under the direction of Katy ( owner and self taught chef in her own rite), the kitchen staff utilizes the freshest of ingredients from the sea and the garden to prepare meals that are as memorable as the final stalk of a giant Brown Bear.

Kodiak Combos

Kodiak Combos is based in Old Harbor, Kodiak, and offers guided saltwater fishing, transporter services for big game, and guided sea-duck hunts. We can also put you onto coho salmon in the nearby rivers when the fish have come inland. Captain Jeff Peterson’s family has lived in Old Harbor for generations and that gives us intimate local knowledge. We fish year-round and hunt avidly throughout the year, so we have our finger on the pulse of the fish and game in the area at all times.

Old Harbor is known for producing big king salmon, and that’s part of our usual program. We troll for kings all-year-long, and can also help you catch halibut, lingcod, rockfish and Pacific cod. In the rivers, the prime objective is to catch coho salmon. As a transporter, Kodiak Combos can take hunters into the field to pursue Sitka blacktail deer and mountain goats. We also offer transporter services for resident brown-bear hunters. Additionally, fully-guided sea-duck hunts are a specialty of ours at Kodiak Combos. We use two saltwater boats to both fish and transport. Lodging and meals are included in your stay, and we aim to make you comfortable and keep you well-fed when you stay at the Old Harbor Lodge. Head out to the village to experience part of the true Alaska with Kodiak Combos.

We have added a new captain to operate one of our boats out of Kodiak city and are now catching, processing, and freezing Pacific cod onboard the Fishy Fishy for resale as fresh flash frozen at sea.

Alaska Cast-and-Blast

Four flyways outfitters - cold bay.

The Cast-and-Blast is the first three weeks of September. Cold Bay is roughly 630 miles southwest of Anchorage. The Alaska Peninsula is bordered by the Bering Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Four Flyways are full-time guides for waterfowl hunting trips. Groups are limited to eight hunters per week.

Four Flyways Outfitters

Alaska salmon fishing

They fish two small rivers and a couple of creeks. Silver salmon fishing can be exceptional during the first three weeks of September. Dolly Varden are abundant and are a lot of fun on light tackle. Chum and pink salmon are also present. On the pier, some saltwater fishing is available for cod, flounder, halibut, and more. They use Achilles inflatable boats to access prime hunting locations on Izembek Lagoon and surrounding areas. They occasionally hunt the Cold Bay side of the Peninsula and nearby upland areas. They use a large spread of custom-painted Brant decoys, Canada goose decoys, and duck decoys to lure all these species within close range. They use the best gear possible to make your hunt more successful and enjoyable. They have a wide variety of hunting and fishing available and will cater the hunting and fishing to each group’s goals. Black brant are the most abundant species of waterfowl in the Cold Bay area. Izembek Lagoon offers the best black Brant hunting anywhere. Taverner cackling geese are also very abundant.  Pintails are by far the most abundant puddle duck species in the area. They also have a good number of mallards, wigeon, and green-winged teal. Ptarmigan are plentiful on the tundra in the Cold Bay uplands.

Cold Bay Seasons:

Three-Banded Birds in Flight

Season:  September 1 - December 15 • The first three weeks of September are best for the Cast & Blast. • September 25 - October is great hunting, with some steelhead, a few silvers, and dollies. • November and December is time for trophy Brant, sea ducks, ptarmigan, plus other ducks. Fishing Equipment:  Guests are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear. They can also use the Lodge's fly, bait cast, spinning, and related tackle.

A Typical Day: Each trip is tailored to the group’s interests. 7:00 a.m., you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast. Snacks are packed to-go to eat in the field. Midday:  Lunch plans will vary based on the time of year and the activities. Guides will either pack food for when the weather and tides allow you to stay out hunting and fishing all day, or you will return to the Lodge in between activities for a warm, filling lunch. Dark:  On most days, you'll hunt until dark, although most of the hunting is more influenced by the tides than the time of day. If you’ve lost days due to bad weather, you may be able to fit in a half-day of hunting or fishing on the day of your departure, depending on your departure time.

Guy Schoenborn's 2014 Recap

Alaska Cast-and-Blast

I hosted a group of hunter/anglers at Four Flyways Outfitters in Cold Bay, Alaska, September 7-13, 2014. For our stay, we had a real mixed bag. The first evening we went out for brant on Izembek Lagoon. We split into two groups to keep the birds moving and set out a few brant decoys. We ended up with near limits on the brant and a couple of Canada geese. Most of the group fished for silvers in a couple of the local streams the next morning. We caught some nice fish up to 13 lbs on flies and lures. The flies outperformed the lures most of the trip. We took the salmon down to the pier to fillet them and brought some outfits to fish for cod from the pier. The cod fishing was amazing, using pieces of salmon belly or chunks of cod on a jig-hook or circle hook rig. Some of the guys caught at least 20 in a couple of hours. We shot a few ptarmigans while driving from one location to another in the Izembek Lagoon Refuge. The ptarmigan were brown on top and were starting to turn white on the underside. We did a couple of brant shoots from a layout boat with decoys near the boat. What an effective method of hunting these open-water birds. They would come right into the decoys and not even pay attention to the gunner in the layout boat until it was too late. We had a couple of days where the wind was blowing too hard to take the boat, and we hiked a couple of miles or more into some ponds or along the lagoon for ducks, geese, and brant. One of those days, six of us shot 56 mallards, teal, pintails, brant, and Canada’s. The staff barbecued some of the brant and teal, and we had cod, fish, and chips. The brant were amazing. They are the best-eating waterfowl I have ever had. For those of you who would like a mixed bag Cast-and-Blast type trip, you can’t beat the options at Four Way Outfitters. - Guy Schoenborn

Combo Fishing Trips

Combo fishing trips are the most popular fishing trips we offer and it’s what we specialize in. These adventures are a fantastic way to experience several different fishing methods and techniques, for a variety of different fish, all in a single day of fishing. Needless to say, it’s also the fastest way to put a lot of meat on the deck, and for you to take home.

Join us as we use stiff gear and bottom weights to target barn-door halibut. Then, change locations, swap out for lighter gear, and jig lures for yelloweye, tiger, and many other species of rockfish. Then, change locations and gear again as we setup downriggers and bait and troll for salmon.

A Note About Lingcod On Our Combo Fishing Trips

Lingcod are voracious predators, feeding on nearly anything they can fit in their mouths, including invertebrates and many species of fish, such as herring and salmon. One of their favorite foods is smaller octopuses, and they also readily devour large rockfish. For this reason, lingcod are found in the same general areas that we target rockfish. However, specifically targeting these potential monsters is inconsistent and therefore we treat lingcod as an “extra” fish on our trips. Any of our rockfish trips have a very good chance of catching a lingcod since all these fish are found in the same area. Lingcod can only be retained after July 1st and must be minimum of 35″ in overall length.

Regarding our long-range combo fishing trips. Long range fishing excursions usually means going out into more open waters. Nothing is more important than your comfort and safety. However, sometimes the weather prohibits having a comfortable and safe day of fishing on those long range trips. When weather prohibits us from making the long range trip we will convert that trip to a downgraded excursion before canceling the trip altogether.

Our Fishing Grounds

Not surprisingly, knowing where to fish is where it all begins. We are so fortunate to have such a massive and fertile fishing area at nearly 4,500 square miles. The fishing grounds begin almost as soon as we leave the Homer harbor extending as far north as Ninilchik and as far south as the Barren Islands.

These waters are home to millions of halibut, rockfish, lingcod, shark, Octopus, Skates, and more.

Where we fish depends on the type of combo fishing trip we’re taking that day, previous days fishing quality, and of course, we always keep a mindful eye on the weather. But, the entirety of the area in red are areas we might fish on your trip.

Homer Halibut & Salmon Combo Fishing Trips

Our combo fishing trips for halibut and salmon offer tremendous value as we fish for both halibut and salmon on the same full-day fishing excursion.

Halibut and king salmon (chinook) combo is available from the beginning of May through September. These fish will weigh anywhere from 25 lbs to 70 lbs or more. The best times for combo king salmon and halibut are from May 15 to August 15th.

Starting in mid-July silver salmon (coho) start to arrive in Kachemak Bay. Fishing peaks for these acrobatic fighters between July 15 and September 15th.

To optimize our fishing, we will troll for salmon during the peak current periods and anchor during the slack periods to target halibut on the bottom.

Homer Halibut & Rockfish Combo Fishing Trips

Rockfish are such a fun fish to catch and when combined with halibut makes for a perfect compliment for these combo fishing trips. They are found in plentiful numbers, make for fantastic table fare (who doesn’t want rockfish tacos?), aggressive strikers, and there are more than 30 different species found in Alaska. So you never actually know what species you might reel up.

The most common is the pelagic (fish that move up and down the water column, form schools, and potentially move around the ocean) such as black, dark, and dusky rockfish. The limit on pelagic rockfish is 5 per person per day. Since these fish form schools, once we get into them, it’s not uncommon for every angler on the boat to have one on at the same time! Since we do this on very light tackle you’ll be amazed watching the rod bend over.

We also catch non-pelagic (totally bottom dwelling) such as yelloweye, tiger, china, quillback, and copper rockfish. Non-pelagic fish can live to be between 15 and 75 years and reach up to 25 lbs in weight. The limit on pelagic fish is 1 per person.

During periods of high current we will target rockfish while drifting and using jigs. When the current slows, we’ll change location and gear while we anchor and chum for halibut.

Homer Salmon & Rockfish Combo Fishing Trips

(wednesdays only).

Halibut fishing is not allowed on Wednesdays by NOAA regulation. So, on Wednesdays we offer our salmon and rockfish combo trips.

Our Homer salmon & rockfish combo trips have a 6:30 AM meetup time with a 7:00 AM departure. These are full days with around 1.5 to 2 hours travel time to the fishing grounds where we can target beautiful rockfish and salmon. We usually begin the day targeting rockfish and later switch gear and locations to troll for salmon.

Triple Threat: Halibut, Rockfish & Salmon

If you’ve come looking for the ultimate Homer halibut fishing adventure this is it! This is a long range trip targeting trophy halibut, beautiful rockfish, and chrome bright salmon. Bordering on the gulf of Alaska these trips are nothing short of spectacular.

These trips meet at 6:30 AM with a 7:00 AM departure. You can plan on at least 2 hour travel time, and 3 hours is not out of the question, to get to our trophy fishing grounds. We spend the day jigging for rockfish over pinnacles and underwater habitat structures simply teeming with rockfish.

For salmon we will rig the boat and gear up for downriggers and trolling action. When we switch to halibut we can be fishing in depths ranging from 50 feet to 300′. You wanted to catch a trophy right?

If weather prohibits this trip it will be downgraded to a full-day Halibut/Salmon or Halibut/Rockfish excursion unless weather forces an altogether trip cancellation.

Alaska Caribou Hunts

Professionally guided fly-in caribou hunts in alaska’s arctic, caribou hunts.

Every year, we start our fall hunting season in August providing guided Caribou hunts. Our Caribou camps are located on high alpine lakes that are well used travel corridors. Typically we will take 2 guests per camp and plan for 8 days of hunting. Hunting is done within walking distance of our centrally located camp. The nearby tundra ridges make for great vantage points allowing us to spot migrating Caribou in all directions. Because they are such fast travelers and seldom linger in one spot for long, we focus our efforts in well known pinch points along the Caribou migration routes. Due to the unpredictable nature of Caribou migrations we have seen a wide range in the number animals per day. On several occasions, we have gone days without seeing a bull, to only then have literally over a thousand animals migrate through the valley in a single day!

Thanks to the healthy population and phenomenal camp locations we have nearly a 100% success rate on our guided caribou hunts.

Near camp, berry patches are a great place to find an arctic grizzly. Both bear and wolves can be harvested during our guided caribou hunts. Both predator species are found in higher numbers around the migrating Caribou, often following the herd. Fall bears are especially active as they fatten up for the coming winter. Bumper berry patches are generally good spots to find a bear along with any Caribou kill sites. A typical mature boar in the area will squire 7’ while some go over 8’. Although usually paler than their southern cousins they come in a wide range of coloration from reddish brown to the stereotypical “Toklat grizzly”.

Arctic Caribou Hunting

Accommodations

Although there are many factors outside of our control during an Alaskan hunt, there are measures we take to insure a comfortable stay no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at us. Camps are strategically placed to insure solid hunting locations within a close walking distance. As most of our falls hunting camps are accessed via float plane, we are typically set up on or near a lake shore. Guests are housed in canvas Sibly tents, heated with a wood stove and furnished with cots. A cook/mess tent is also set up to allow comfortable dining during adverse weather conditions. We take great efforts to prepare home cooked breakfasts and dinners that will satisfy any hungry hunter. While out hunting, lighter pack lunches are packed. All camps are supplied with at least one satellite communication device and appropriate survival gear.

Travel and Logistics

All of our guided trips originate in Fairbanks Alaska. We suggest booking a flight with an arrival date at least one day before the start date of your trip. There are several options of hotels near the airport that provide shuttle services. On day one of your trip we will pick you up at your hotel. If you have not already purchased your hunting license and tags, we will stop by Fish and Game before leaving town. From Fairbanks, we drive four hours north to Circle City. In this small rural community, your pilot will meet you with the float plane on the Yukon River. Most of our camps are accessed via float equipped Cessna 180. As we have to follow the strict laws of gravity, we ask that you keep your gear under 60lbs. Most flights to camp are an hour to an hour and a half. Due to the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather it is best to leave some flexibility in your travel plans. At times, delays of several days may occur due to severe weather keeping our airplanes grounded.

alaska hunting fishing combo trips

All of our guides are highly experienced and professional. Owner, Charlie Jagow, was raised hunting and trapping in the region, this experience has given him, not only knowledge of the area, but also a personal connection to the refuge and its wild places. Many of our hunting guides also live in the bush and have a life time’s experience worth of hunting in the Arctic. Hunting is a way of life for us. There are no schools or college courses available to train a guide; instead, this highly skilled profession is only learned from hands-on experience and apprenticeship. All of our guides have dedicated themselves to perfecting these skills. Guiding is not a job for us, it’s a passion. We love assisting our guest in the pursuit of a life time!

There are opportunities to fish in most of our hunting camps. Some of the smaller rivers provide some of the best grayling fishing the state has to offer. Many of our lake camps are inhabited by both pike and graying. Light tackle, spinners and spoons are our choice for catching both species.
