Is the Alhambra night visit worth it?

alhambra night visit

Is the Alhambra night visit worth it? It’s open both at night and during the day, but when is best to visit the Alhambra? We give you the inside scoop so that you can make up your own mind.

You can visit the Alhambra in Granada in several ways depending in the ticket you decide to purchase. For more information on this, read How to buy tickets to the Alhambra in Granada .

Among the different options there is a ticket called ‘Alhambra Nocturna – Palacios Nazaríes’, which allows visiting the Palacios Nazaríes only at night, and a second ticket called ‘Alhambra Nocturna – Generalife’ to visit the Generalife at night. The entrance to the Palacios Nazaríes does not allow visiting the Generalife, and vice versa.

Is it worth to see the Alhambra at night, and not during the day? In order to answer this question, we decided to make the night visit to the Nazaríes Palaces, the most spectacular part of the complex, having already visited the Alhambra during the day on other occasions.

Table of Contents

How is the Alhambra night visit: the Nasrid Palaces

The Alhambra night visit time begins when it is already completely dark. As it happens during the day, the visit follows a predetermined route, that you must follow. During the night visit, you get to see the Mexuar, the Palacio de Comares and the Palacio de los Leones.

There are two major differences between daytime and nighttime visits:

  • You visit the palaces in a different order compared to the one of  the daytime visit.
  • The night visit includes less palaces and monuments, and does not allow you to visit beautiful Palacio del Partal.

How is the night lighting of the Nasrid Palaces

All the nocturnal illumination inside the Palacios Nazaríes is electric, generally white, without the warmness of the natural light of the sun. There is no attempt to imitate what would have been the illumination of the palaces in the period in which the different sultans of the Nasrid dynasty lived there.

The lighting is uneven. There are areas getting a powerful light bath while contiguous parts remain in the semi-darkness. In general, the lighting project (we cannot quite understand the criteria it follows) privileges the lighting of the upper parts while forgetting the wonderful tiles that are in the lower parts.

A special case is the wonderful Patio de los Leones, which is one of the low points of the night visit. The light chosen to light it supposedly mimics the light of the moon. All the magic that this space has during the day is lost in the night visit. It’s too dark. If you’ve never entered the Patio de los Leones with natural light, you have no idea what you’re missing out on. Any attempt to take a photograph will also be wasted, because of the minimal illumination.

Yes, with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a very high ISO and a very slow shutter speed you can even get some decent photographs. But forget to get anything with your smartphone!

From the palace out, it’s pitch black. You won’t be able to see anything. No gardens, no walls, no other buildings. It’s a real shame.

So… Is the Alhambra night visit worth it?

In our opinion, the night visit to the Palacios Nazaríes is not worth it.

You should only choose this option if you have already visited the Alhambra during the day several times, and you are curious to know what the night visit is like.

Here is why we believe that the Alhambra night visit is not worth it:

  • The night tour does not include a visit to all the areas of the Nasrid Palaces that you can visit during the day.
  • The lighting design is not consistent. Different light sources of uneven power create a sensation of improvisation resulting in unequally lighted spaces. So no effort has been put into creating the warm and magic atmosphere that the place truly deserves. It is hard to believe that a monument as incredible as the Alhambra has not had the privilege of receiving a night-lighting project according to the importance of the complex.
  • The indescribable sensation that you experience when you first enter the Patio de los Leones, the same sensation experienced by the Catholic Kings or the Emperor Carlos V, is lost in the night visit.

Visit the Alhambra during the day and when night comes, have fun in a different way: enjoy Granada tapas bars .

As the seat of the sultanate´s court, perhapas the most remarkable sights of the Alahmbra are the palaces commissioned by the Nasrid sultans. Behind the bare walls, devoid of any decoration, that mark the outside of the compound, we find a series of buildings of subtle architecture and fragile, delicate ornamentation tha produce an intentes aesthetic emotion. These were the residences used by the different Nasrid sultans for themselves and their courts. These palaces are currntly divided into three main areas independent of – yet connected with – each other: Mexuar, Palacio de Comares y Palacio de los Leones.

The night visit to the Nasrid Palaces does not allow access to the Generalife, as there is a specific night visit to discover this illuminated space, carried out at the same time.

During the night visit, visitors are asked not to use camera flashes, as this dazzles other visitors, causing disturbance and preventing the serene perception of the Nasrid Palaces.

Access to the Nasrid Palaces must be at the time indicated on the ticket.

  • curiousgeorge1052 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Nice pass for admission, especially if Nasrid Palace is sold out, includes 9 bus rides This review refers to the Granada Card, which can be purchased online up to three months prior to arrival. You will need to note the specific days when you will be using the card and the specific date and timeslot to enter the Nasrid Palace. Note: There is no tour guide associated with the Granada Card. We used the Granada Card during our trip. It is a good path if you want to take in a number of sights in a relatively short period of time (48 or 72 hours). The pass allows you a timed ticket entry into the Nasrid Palace in Alhambra (also useful if you unable to reserve a timeslot from the Alhambra website). Note: For the Nasrid Palace, the admission policy is very strict. You will book for a specific timeslot, in which you have to enter at that time or 30 within minutes afterward. The Granada Card also allowed us into the Alcazaba, Generalife Gardens. In town, the pass allowed us into the Royal Chapel (resting place of Ferdinand and Isabelle) and Cathedral of Granada. There were some of the monasteries farther away from town, including Sacromonte Abbey (good to see the cave chapels), Monastery of St. Jeronimo (first monastery in Granada after Christian conquest), and Monastery of Cartuja (Baroque style). The pass also allows up to nine bus rides, which was sufficient to get us around to the sights, including the overlook at St. Nicholas (suggest seeing it during sunset). For us, it took us to explore a few more places than originally planned. I’m glad that we took this route because it gave us a much fuller appreciation of the sights and culture of the city. Granada Alhambra Night Guided Tour

Tour the alhambra by night in this magical experience..

Discover this unique monument on a guided night tour that will take you to contemplate the best of Islamic art in a special light.

Whether you go for the first time or because you repeat -like many- your visit to Granada, this guided night tour of the Alhambra is one of the most popular plans in the city. You will tour the complex with an expert guide who will help you discover the special charm of this essential monument.

In small groups of no more than 10 people you will explore the different palaces and rooms of the Alhambra in a two-hour tour under the spectacular moonlight of Granada.

Recommended if ... you do not want to miss the most romantic and original plan possible and contemplate the night illumination of the Alhambra.

How to book a guided tour at night in the Alhambra

Guided tours of the Alhambra are the best way to explore the mythical Nasrid palace city, the last living trace of this dynasty in Spain.

During the tour, you will be accompanied by an expert guide who will tell you all about the history and architecture of this reference point of Hispano-Muslim art in the West, explaining in detail all the sites you see. Thanks to their experience, they know how to turn a cultural visit into something fun and interesting so that making a night visit to the Alhambra is a plan that you definitely have to do during your stay

The price of guided tours of the Alhambra varies depending on the type of tour you book and what the tour includes. In Hellotickets you can book online the night guided tour of the Alhambra . Of course, do it well in advance of your trip because they run out quickly.

How to get tickets to visit the Alhambra by night

There are currently two types of night visits to the Alhambra: the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife Palace and gardens . As with the daytime visits, you will also need to buy a ticket to the Alhambra at night to see these areas of the monument separately.

The price of the night tickets to the Nasrid Palaces (which includes access to the Mexuar, Comares Palace, Palace of the Lions and Corridor - Lindaraja) is 8 euros while the night tickets to visit the Generalife Palace and gardens cost 5 euros.

Anyway, in my opinion, buying the tickets at the ticket office is not the best option. My advice is to buy your Alhambra tickets online and in advance to save yourself from having to queue endlessly at the ticket office. The Alhambra is one of the most visited monuments in Spain even at night!

There are many people who have already seen the monument in the morning and now want to come back to see it at night and live an original and different experience under the stars. If you don't book your tickets to the Alhambra in advance you could run the risk of running out of them since the capacity is limited, and that would be a shame!

Is it worth seeing the Alhambra at night?

Absolutely. If the beauty of the Alhambra is striking in daylight, I must say that at night it looks with a special charm. To contemplate it in the stillness of the night and the moonlight is a magical experience.

Despite the darkness in which the visit takes place, the spaces are well illuminated which allows us to better appreciate certain ornamental elements such as the reliefs of the plasterwork, the chiaroscuro of the architecture or the muqarnas. At night the Alhambra displays its colors and beauty in all its splendor!

In addition, as it takes place during the silence of the night and there are not as many tourists as in the morning, the walk through the Alhambra is quiet and you can enjoy much more of the fusion between the palatine city and the surrounding nature. Contemplating the Alhambra at night while listening to the sound of the water in the background is an intimate and cozy experience .

In any case, I believe that night visits to the Alhambra are complementary to daytime visits and not a substitute for them. That is, they provide a different and unique view of the monument but if it is the first time you go to the Alhambra I recommend a daytime visit because you can tour the entire enclosure and you will have a global vision of the fortress, while in the night visits you are only allowed to see a part : the Nasrid Palaces or the Generalife and its gardens.

In short, I recommend a night visit to the Alhambra if you already know the monumental complex and want to enjoy the views of this beautiful place in an original and surprising way while discovering its legends and its most enigmatic side.

However, if you are one of those travelers who prefer to avoid the morning crowds when visiting the palatine city, I think the night tours of the Alhambra can also be a very interesting option for you. So don't hesitate, you will have a great time!

Book a guided tour to the Alhambra

How much does it cost to visit the Alhambra at night?

The night tours of the Alhambra do not cover the entire monumental complex but only a small part (although very important) where you can only see the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife Palace and the gardens . The price, therefore, is lower than the general daytime ticket which costs 14 euros at the box office.

Thus, the price of night tickets to the Nasrid Palaces (which includes access to the Mexuar, Comares Palace, Palace of the Lions, the Palace of Charles V and Corridor - Lindaraja) is 8 euros while night tickets to visit the Generalife Palace and gardens cost 5 euros .

In the case of a guided tour of the Alhambra, the entrance fee may be a little higher, about 60 euros , but it is well worth it as you will be accompanied by an expert guide who will explain in a pleasant way the history and architecture of this monument, so you will get the most out of the visit. You will not miss any detail!

Book a guided visit to the Alhambra

How long does the guided tour of the Alhambra last?

Unlike the daytime tours that usually last between 3 and 4 hours because they cover the entire complex, night tours of the Alhambra are shorter since they only cover either the Nasrid Palaces or the Generalife Palace and gardens. Normally the guided night tour of the Alhambra lasts about 2 hours .

Can I visit the Alhambra at night with children?

Of course you can. The guided tours of the Alhambra are adapted to families and the guides are very friendly with children.

However, those who know the kids best to know if a tour of this type can please them are their parents. If so, I highly recommend the night tour because not only will they enjoy the beautiful views of the Alhambra but they will learn things in a fun way and hear some very curious legends.

If the children are still small, sometimes parents prefer to visit the monuments at their own pace in case at some point an emergency arises or you have to take a break to eat or play a little. If you think your family will be more comfortable visiting the Alhambra at night on their own, it is best to buy general admission tickets.

What are the opening hours of the Alhambra at night?

To visit the Alhambra at night there are two types of visits, the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife Palace and gardens. Both are done at the same time but separately.

  • Summer night visit (from April 1 to October 14): from 10 PM to 11:30 PM.
  • Night visit in winter schedule (from October 15 to March 31): from 8 PM to 9:30 PM.

What will I see on the night tour of the Alhambra?

Nasrid palaces.

The Nasrid Palaces was the complex where the kings of Granada resided. They are composed of three independent buildings known as the Mexuar (audience area), the Palace of Comares (official house of the king) and the Palace of the Lions (the harem and the abode of the royal family).

During the tour of the Nasrid Palaces you will see such beautiful rooms as the Abencerrajes room (the king's bedroom), the Ambassadors' Hall (the symbolic center of Nasrid power), the Kings' Hall (the sultan's council room), the Myrtles' courtyard (where the embassy receptions were held) or the Lions' courtyard (an allegory of paradise).

These palaces are a sample of the sophistication and good taste of the Nasrid kings, the last rulers of Al-Andalus. During the visit to the Nasrid Palaces I recommend that you pay attention to the wonderful ornamental motifs that decorate them as the impressive muqarnas in arches and domes, glazed tile plinths or spectacular plasterwork.

The Generalife Palace and gardens

The Generalife was the summer villa of the Nasrid kings, where they went when they wanted to relax and escape the formalities of the court.

Located on the Cerro del Sol, it is one of the most beautiful places in the Alhambra and one of the few almunias that have survived from medieval times in all of Al-Andalus.

Strolling through the Generalife, among its gardens and manicured courtyards, is a delight at night. An oasis of tranquility where you can enjoy the fresh air and the soothing sound of the water from the fountains and pools of the palace.

How to buy tickets and visiting the Alhambra

alhambra night tour tickets

1. Advance bookings

One option is to buy your ticket up to three months in advance. We recommend booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Inside the Palace of Charles V

2. Only buy through official channels

There are two ways of buying your ticket in advance. You can buy it from official website or by calling +34 858953616.

Court of the Myrtles during the night tour of La Alhambra de Granada © Pepe Marín. Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife

3. Choose the right type of ticket

The general ticket grants access to all areas open to the public. The gardens ticket, meanwhile, only grants access to the main landscaped areas. There are also two tickets for night-time visits: one for the palaces (available throughout the year) and one for the Generalife Gardens and Palace (available from April to November). The “Alhambra experiences” ticket includes a night-time tour of the Nasrid Palaces, and a daytime tour of the gardens the next day. Both grant free access to the Palace of Charles V and the Alhambra Museum.

4. Note when travelling with children under the age of 12

The tickets for these children are free, but they must be purchased so that they can gain access. In the case of minors from 3 to 11 years old, tickets must be booked at the time of purchase together with the rest of the adult tickets. Tickets for children under 3 years of age do not need to be booked in advance as they are provided at the ticket offices or at the entrances to the monument.

Mirador de Granada

5. Organise your visit around the opening times for the Nasrid Palaces

A visit lasts approximately three hours, although the Nasrid Palaces have set visiting times that are allocated when purchasing the ticket. These cannot be changed. You should therefore plan your visit around these times. We recommend the following two itineraries: Alcazaba – Palaces – Generalife, or alternatively, Generalife – Alcazaba – Palaces. Bear in mind the following distances: it takes 15 minutes from the entrance to the Alhambra to the Generalife, 17 to the Nasrid Palaces, and 20 to the Alcazaba.

6. Think about how to get to the Alhambra

If you’re driving, bear in mind that you need to make your approach from the southern ring-road (Ronda Sur), since private vehicles are not permitted to approach from the city centre. You may find it more convenient to take a taxi or the C3 or C4 local bus (it takes 15 to 20 from Plaza de Isabel La Católica, in Granada) or catch the “Granada City Tour” tourist train. If you decide to walk, it takes about 20 minutes from Paseo de los Tristes or from Plaza del Realejo.

7. Take your digital or printed tickets with you

To access, you must show your physical or digital QR code ticket in addition to presenting your ID document or passport. If you wish, you can take the ticket printed on A4 paper, or with the type of ticket that is provided at the ticket offices and automatic vending machines.

Detail of arches in the Alhambra

8. If you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, you can do so on the day of your visit

While we don’t advise leaving it until the last minute, advance booking is available up to two hours before your visit. You also have the option of buying tickets when you arrive at the monument. There is no guarantee whatsoever that tickets will be available, and tickets bought at the Alhambra will only be valid for that day. Payment is by credit card (from the ticket machines) or by cash (at the ticket desk) only.

9. You can take a virtual tour of the Alhambra while eagerly awaiting the day of your visit

We suggest you do it with this multimedia gallery.
