Allianz Travel Insurance Review: Is it Worth The Cost?

Allianz Travel Insurance is provided by Allianz Global Assistance, an insurer that operates in 35 countries and serves 40 million customers in the U.S. The company offers several types of travel insurance plans depending on your needs.

Travel insurance will help protect you if unexpected events affect your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a comprehensive plan or emergency medical coverage only to supplement the travel insurance you have from your credit cards , Allianz Global Assistance offers plenty of options.

Allianz trip insurance plans fall into two categories: single trip and annual/multi-trip plans. We evaluated several single trip and annual/multi-trip plans to help you figure out which policy makes sense for you.

Depending on what type of coverage you’re looking for, Allianz offers several different travel insurance options. Allianz’s plan choices fall under single trip or annual/multi-trip plans.

Single trip plans are designed for individuals who are leaving their home, visiting another destination (or destinations) and returning home. These travel insurance plans are the most comprehensive and provide benefits like trip cancellation, trip interruption and medical coverage.

Annual/multi-trip plans are designed for those who like to take a lot of little trips throughout the year as well as for business travelers. Because the coverage period is longer, these plans are more expensive.

Some of these plans include medical coverage only while others also provide more comprehensive travel insurance perks. There’s coverage for business equipment as these plans are geared toward work travelers.

Allianz offers five travel insurance plans for single trips, including a plan that's mainly focused on emergency medical coverage.

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan is geared toward domestic travelers who are looking for trip cancellation, interruption and delay coverage but don't need post-departure benefits like emergency medical or baggage loss. This plan is Allianz’s most affordable option.

OneTrip Basic, Prime and Premier are three comprehensive travel insurance plans.

OneTrip Basic is the most economical plan and offers trip cancellation, interruption and delay benefits along with emergency medical and baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime provides all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher limits, a few extra coverage areas and complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier offers the most coverage, doubling almost every post-departure limit of the Prime plan with more covered cancellation reasons.

If you don't need pre-departure trip cancellation and interruption protections or you already have coverage through a premium travel credit card , the standalone OneTrip Emergency Medical plan may be a good choice. The plan mainly provides emergency medical protections along with some baggage loss/delay benefits.

Allianz single-trip plan cost

Here's a look at the cost of an Allianz travel insurance policy for a one-week, $1,500 vacation to Croatia in August 2020 taken by a 30-year-old from Texas.

allianz global assistance travel risk insurance

The OneTrip Premier is the most expensive plan and provides the highest level of protection, especially for emergency medical events.

However, if you’re OK with lower limits on emergency medical, a OneTrip Prime or Basic plan could be a more appropriate choice. These costs represent a range of 3.4%-7.5% of the total cost of the trip, which is in line with typical costs of 4%-8%, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association.

Allianz offers four different annual/multi-trip plans.

AllTrips Basic is suitable for those who would like emergency medical coverage while abroad but don't need trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The AllTrips Prime, Executive and Premier plans provide an entire year of comprehensive travel insurance benefits.

The Executive and Premier plans offer various levels of trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The Executive plan is specifically designed for business travelers since it offers protection for business equipment.

Allianz annual/multi-trip plans cost

Let's look at an example of an annual Allianz travel insurance plan that starts in July 2020 for a 50-year-old from Illinois.

allianz global assistance travel risk insurance

Coverage under these plans is offered for trips up to 45 days in length.

The AllTrips Executive plan costs significantly more than the other plans; this is mainly due to higher trip cancellation coverage, emergency medical and business equipment protections. The Executive coverage amount for trip cancellation can be increased beyond what is quoted here, driving that plan's price up to as much as $785.

If you’re not concerned with pre-trip cancellation benefits and don’t need the increased level of medical coverage, the Basic plan is the most affordable option.

For trips longer than 45 days, the AllTrips Premier plan might be a better choice as it offers coverage for up to 90 days. Using the same search parameters but with 90 days of coverage per trip, the cost of the annual plan is $475.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Choosing the right plan for your trip involves understanding what type of coverage you will want while you’re abroad.

If you have a premium travel card (e.g., the Chase Sapphire Reserve® ): These cards often offer some trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, so you may not need a plan that offers all the same coverage. In this case, getting the OneTrip Medical plan might be enough.

If you’re going on a trip and returning home: OneTrip Prime, Basic or Premier are good options to choose from while offering different levels of coverage.

If you’ll be going on multiple and longer trips: the AllTrips Premier plan might be best as it provides insurance benefits for trips up to 90 days in length. The remaining three annual AllTrips plans cover multiple trips, up to 45 days.

If the coverage provided by your card isn’t adequate, you don’t have credit card coverage or you didn’t pay for your trip with that credit card: In these instances, it's best to choose a comprehensive plan depending on how much coverage you need and for how long. Consider one of the single trip or multi-trip plans.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth it?

Travel insurance plans have a lot of exclusions that you need to pay attention to so you know exactly what type of coverage you’re getting. Here are some general exclusions you can expect:

High-risk activities: Skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other types of high-risk sporting activities that the insurer deems unsafe.

Intentional acts: Losses sustained from intoxication, drug use, self-harm and criminal activity.

Specifically designated events: Epidemics, natural disasters and war are specifically mentioned in the policy as exclusions.

It's important to note that exclusions may vary based on the policy and where you live, so it's always best to review the fine print to ensure you’re clear about what is and isn’t covered.

Allianz has been offering insurance for more than 25 years. The company is well established and offers numerous single and annual travel insurance policies to fit many different needs.

Allianz travel insurance plans offer a wide array of benefits including (but not limited to): coronavirus-related coverage, trip cancellation, interruption, emergency medical coverage and transportation, baggage loss/damage, baggage delay, travel delay, change fee coverage, loyalty program redeposit fees, 24-hour assistance and many more benefits. Each plan is different, so you’ll want to look at the specific plans you’re considering to know exactly which benefits you’ll receive.

No, Allianz doesn't offer the Cancel For Any Reason optional upgrade. Review the policy details of the Allianz plan you’re considering to ensure you’re comfortable with the list of covered reasons. For example, the loss of a job can be considered a covered reason, but wanting to cancel a trip because you’re afraid to travel isn't.

Most often, you will need to file a claim with the insurer after you’ve incurred costs. If the claim is approved, you will receive a reimbursement. In other instances (e.g., covered baggage delay), the insurer will pay you a fixed amount per day and you won’t need to submit receipts.

Allianz Global Assistance offers several good travel insurance plans to choose from. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan for a vacation, a single-trip plan is your best bet.

If you’re a frequent traveler or take lots of business trips, a multi-trip plan could be the way to go. If you have a travel credit card, look at what travel insurance benefits you may already have so you don’t duplicate your coverage .

Allianz Travel Insurance Summary

Allianz opening price point plans offer travelers the most commonly purchased coverage options. Trip cancellation and interruption services are offered even under its OneTrip Cancellation Plus, the company's entry level offering. Trips are insured up to their full purchase price. The company extends protection to children under 17 when accompanied by a paying adult with no additional cost on their OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans.

Allianz offers customers a full refund if coverage is cancelled within fifteen days of purchase.

Allianz’s satisfied customers describe how much they appreciate the company’s help with serious overseas medical situations. Negative comments generally come from people unhappy because the company’s contract didn’t apply to their claims. Those comments reinforce the importance of reading and understanding insurance contracts before purchasing them. This is particularly important in less-regulated insurance markets (such as travel insurance) where there is no “standard” policy.

Allianz Global Assistance launches first-of-its-kind annual travel insurance plan

Allianz Global Assistance flips the script on annual travel protection with its new innovative, flexible and affordable Annual Medical Flex Plan

Cambridge ON, Feb. 20, 2024 – Allianz Global Assistance (Allianz), a leading Canadian travel insurance and assistance provider, recently launched its innovative Annual Medical Flex Plan, the first product of its kind that brings more flexibility, affordability and convenience to Canadian travellers.

The Annual Medical Flex Plan is designed to help insurance and financial advisors convert more of their travelling clients to annual travel insurance policyholders. The plan’s auto-renew option also makes it easy for advisors to sync a client’s Annual Medical Flex Plan with their yearly client check-ins or home and auto insurance renewals, providing 360 degrees of protection while driving compounding annual revenue for their business.

With the Annual Medical Flex Plan, clients only pay for the coverage they need, thanks to a unique, client-centric design that provides coverage for the total number of planned travel days outside of Canada within one year. Unlike traditional annual multi-trip plans, the Annual Medical Flex Plan does not impose a per-trip day limit, which gives travellers more flexibility - and convenience - by reducing the need for additional top-up coverage on individual trips.

“Allianz is thrilled to unveil the Annual Medical Flex Plan, which redefines annual travel protection by giving more flexible, affordable coverage that caters to the dynamic needs of today’s travellers,” said Dan Keon, Allianz’s VP of Marketing & Insights. “Advisors play a central role when clients are making important insurance and financial decisions. This product is currently available exclusively to our valued broker channel, including financial advisors, where clients can work with their trusted advisor to purchase a policy that aligns with their unique travel plans and provides reliable coverage all year long.”

As part of the product’s development, Allianz conducted the ‘U.S. Travel Study’ through Ipsos to better understand Canadians’ current travel habits. The study confirmed that, of those Canadians who typically travel abroad for leisure purposes, 48 per cent are taking two or more trips within a one-year period. This reaffirms the need for accessible coverage that protects travellers across multiple trips. Allianz also engaged behavioural economics experts in the design of the product and sales flow to gain insights into clients’ decision-making process when considering travel insurance.

“Annual travel insurance is the perfect complement to a broker’s home and auto insurance offerings,” notes Keon. “To optimize this opportunity, our AdvisorMax sales flow has been enhanced to help our partners seamlessly quote and offer the Annual Medical Flex Plan in every client interaction. With a client-focused design and simple auto-renewing feature, the Annual Medical Flex Plan is perfectly positioned to not only help advisors offer the right protection to their clients, but to become a major, compounding revenue stream for their business.”

Annual Medical Flex Plan highlights:

  • $10 million emergency medical coverage
  • 24/7 emergency care and assistance
  • Choice of 10 flexible annual travel day options
  • Hassle-free renewals
  • Travel solo or with family
  • Kids travel free with individually rated adults
  • Simple medical screening for those over the age of 65
  • Easy claims filing process

*The U.S. Travel Survey was conducted online by Ipsos in June 2023, among a sample of n = 2,000 Canadian adults. The results are considered accurate to within +/- 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Travel insurance during pregnancy: what you should know

allianz global assistance travel risk insurance

Many parents-to-be, anticipating the sleepless nights, diaper changes and midnight feedings, opt to take a vacation before baby arrives. And, while a babymoon is a wonderful opportunity for parents-to-be to connect, travel during pregnancy requires careful planning and protection to mitigate risks to yourself, your unborn child and your wallet. dummy Buying travel insurance from a reputable insurance company such as Allianz Global Assistance, may help assist you and your family during unforeseen circumstances.

The ability to travel safely while pregnant depends on the type of travel you’re considering. Top of mind for many is flying when pregnant and visiting regions with less advanced medical care. A trek in a remote area known for malaria-carrying mosquitos is obviously not advised. Alternatively, a short flight or train ride to explore a new city where you can walk, rest and eat well could be a delightful and memorable experience for parents-to-be.

You might consider travelling in the second trimester (around 14 weeks to 27 at the most), which usually coincides with that peaceful time after morning sickness and before the significant reality of birth is upon you.

I’m thinking of travelling outside Canada—what do I need to consider?

Before you start booking international travel, it’s important to put a plan in place to maintain your health while you’re out of the country.

Up-to-date vaccines are always a good idea, but are particularly important when you’re expecting. Prolonged sitting can be harmful for pregnant women, so make sure you can stop or walk around regularly to keep your blood flowing. Some physicians may recommend compression stockings for air travel, which increase blood flow, so that is an option to consider.

Remember you may not be able to get your favourite vitamins and snacks outside the country, so be sure to pack a supply with you. In short, you should have a good understanding of your personal health and the parameters of your pregnancy, and a plan in case of challenges. Whatever your plans may be, it’s essential to review them with your primary physician before leaving to ensure you’re safe to travel.

I'm thinking of travelling to another province—what should I know?

While travelling to another province or territory, governmental health insurance coverage for Canadian and permanent residents may not cover all medical costs. This often results in surprisingly high medical bills. The agreement between provinces and territories determines the services and amounts eligible for reimbursement.

Refer to your local official healthcare website to determine what is and isn’t covered outside of your province or territory.

Does travel insurance cover pregnancy-related issues?

Assuming that the mother is a Canadian resident and that there are no pre-existing complications or high-risk pregnancies, plans with medical benefits offered by Allianz Global Assistance may provide coverage related to pregnancy. Coverage may be eligible before the 31-week mark.

Trip cancellation insurance  is also a good idea, as it may offer protection for pregnancy-related changes to your travel plans, such as a diagnosis of gestational diabetes or preeclampsia. These are serious conditions and should be documented by your healthcare team. If you can’t travel due to these complications, assuming they first appeared after you booked travel insurance, your trip will typically be cancelled. Unfortunately, standard morning sickness is not typically a covered reason for a cancellation insurance claim.

Another factor to consider is the policies of various airlines. Many airlines won’t let women fly after 32 weeks so it’s important to read your airline’s passenger policy as well as your travel insurance policy. Some airlines are even more stringent. If you are not allowed to board a flight because you are pregnant, it’s important to know in advance whether this affects your eligibility to claim a refund through travel insurance.

Giving birth prematurely while you’re travelling is also a risk to be aware of. With most Canadian travel insurance policies, including those offered by Allianz Global Assistance, the mother would be covered for medical treatment related to delivery, before the 31-week mark. However, medical expenses for the newborn child would not be, so you’ll need to be aware of that and consider the risks. So for example, with a premature delivery at 27 weeks, the infant would require special care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Under travel insurance policies offered by Allianz Global Assistance, none of the care or transportation costs for the newborn child would be eligible for coverage in this scenario. Instead, the costs of the NICU and associated needs would be the responsibility of the parents.

Does travel insurance cover pregnancy?

Be realistic and know your policy.

Travel insurance doesn’t cover everything, so knowing your policy’s terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions will help you to better understand the included coverage. Every travel insurance policy administered by Allianz Global Assistance comes with a 10-day “free-look” guarantee and valuable 24/7 assistance services from anywhere in the world.

If you are pregnant and in good health, a babymoon in the form of a restful vacation can do wonders. However, if you are experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, travelling far from home may not be a good idea. Instead, try to enjoy local attractions- you will gain a whole new appreciation and perspective next time you are there with a baby!

Rich soja appointed as global head of marine at allianz commercial.

Richard Soja Alllianz

Allianz Commercial appointed Rich Soja as Global Head of Marine. Soja, who has been with the company since 2017, will continue to oversee his Regional North America and Inland Marine responsibilities until a successor is confirmed.

Gordon Browne, Global Head of Specialty at Allianz Commercial, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, “I am absolutely delighted to have Rich joining the leadership team for this key position. With his extensive knowledge of both our business and the Marine sector, he is perfectly placed to build on the excellent foundations that Ulrich Kadow established with the team and lead our Marine business in the future.”

Soja brings over 35 years of experience in Marine insurance to his new role, having held increasingly senior Marine underwriting roles at Chubb, Aspen Insurance, and Tokio Marine prior to joining Allianz. His predecessor, Ulrich Kadow, in 2023 transitioned to a new role within Allianz Commercial as Global Head of Product Management and Underwriting Transformation. &

How a carrier partner can help navigate a challenging management and professional liability market.

allianz global assistance travel risk insurance

Rates in the management & professional liability (M&PL) markets were on the rise from 2020 to early 2023 and are now falling rapidly.

M&PL divisions manage a number of different insurance products including management liability (D&O), professional liability (E&O), employment practices liability (EPL), fiduciary liability policies, cyber, etc. In 2023 and into 2024, a big influence on the marketplace has been the extremely aggressive and softening public company D&O market.

Though these rates have been softening for management liability, that may change over the next few years as companies continue to adjust their business models motivated by economic uncertainty. Layoffs were up nearly 200% last year , Forbes reported, even as other recession indicators, like the inflation rate , improved. A recession could lead to an increased claim activity and force carriers to raise rates.

“Whenever there is a meaningful downturn in the economy, we tend to see claim frequency pop up,” said George Schalick, Jr., senior vice president of the Management and Professional Liability Division at Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY).

With continued fiscal uncertainty, businesses potentially already burdened with pandemic-related claims should seek a carrier with a long history in M&PL products. They will provide much-needed risk management guidance and be better positioned to support their insureds during market fluctuations.

Why Insureds Might See an Uptick in M&PL Claims

allianz global assistance travel risk insurance

George Schalick, Jr., Senior Vice President of the Management and Professional Liability Division, Philadelphia Insurance Companies

The current soft market might come as a bit of a surprise as it does not track with previous underwriting cycles and economic conditions. Afterall, many privately held and non-profit organizations struggled during the early days of the pandemic with shutdowns and rapidly declining revenues.  But the Government assistance programs, like the Paycheck Protection Program loans , helped keep many afloat during the tough times.

“During COVID many organizations stopped doing business until they were able to sort out all of the health and safety challenges,” Schalick said. “They were forced to lock down, but then all the government assistance programs allowed them to keep people employed. The increased volume of claims we anticipated we would see coming from the lockdowns and restrictions that were imposed upon businesses in the U.S. didn’t manifest at first.”

“Just because there wasn’t an onslaught of reported claims at the beginning of the pandemic, doesn’t mean the circumstances that would give rise to a claim being reported didn’t occur. Courts and the judicial system were closed or slowed and now that they are back open, we’re starting to see the circumstances that occurred during the COVID lockdowns becoming claims today,” Schalick said. “Litigation is progressing.”

Added to the delayed pandemic litigation is a concern over newer claims that might be filed as the country inches toward an economic downturn. Though a recession was avoided in 2023, experts think a soft dip could occur in 2024, with 76% of economists saying there’s a 50% or less chance of an economic downturn this year — that almost always results in more management liability claims.

“During the Great Recession in 2008, we saw an almost immediate spike in claims because of the economic conditions and the pressure it placed on organizations. They were making personnel changes with significant belt tightening almost immediately.” Schalick said.

What’s in Store for M&PL Policy Rates in 2024?

Despite an uptick in claims and increased economic uncertainty, management liability rates haven’t increased, resulting in market-wide pricing levels that may not meet the increased pressure of rising settlements and jury verdicts.

“Rates are going the other direction and settlement values are not falling,” Schalick said.

The mismatch between rates, claim frequency and severity is, in part, because carriers experiencing the dramatic soft market in the public D&O market are seeking premium gain in the private and non-profit market.

“In the public company market, the rates have been decreasing significantly. The rates were increasing in the private, not-for-profit market, and rightfully so, but there’s a desire to supplement overall mid-size D&O for carriers who also write private not-for-profit, and they see that as an opportunity to aggregate premium,” Schalick said. “So the always competitive landscape in the private, not-for-profit market has dramatically increased in the last 18 to 24 months.”

Still, companies of all sizes and types should be concerned about management liability rates in the future. Legal system abuse is resulting in increases in both the amount of litigation and the size of verdicts plaintiffs are receiving.

Certain areas of the country are particularly vulnerable to this type of legal system abuse. As a result, insureds in these localities are likely to be vulnerable to rate increases.

“The environment is so positive for the plaintiff that forces premium increases so carriers are able to stay in that market long term,” Schalick said.

Why a Tenured Carrier Partner Can Help Insureds Navigate An Uncertain Market

It’s clear that insureds are facing an uncertain M&PL market over the next few years. Fortunately, carriers with a long history in the M&PL space will be there to offer stability.

Philadelphia Insurance Companies has been supporting this market for 35 years. PHLY is committed to offering long-term rate stability, even as economic and claims trends start to push premiums upwards. They have an appetite for all sorts of companies, large and small, for-profit and nonprofit alike.

“We’ve been at this game for a long time and are one of the most tenured underwriters in this space,” Schalick said. “We like to stay very consistent.”

PHLY has worked with both for-profit and non-profit on management liability policies. With dedicated M&PL teams throughout the company’s 13 regions, PHLY provides the support agents and brokers are looking for on behalf of their clients. The teams know their regions well and can respond to local trends. They’re also dedicated to making the renewal process as easy as possible for their partners and policyholders.

“We have real confidence in our results, so we focus a lot on making the renewal experience as painless as possible for all agents and insureds,” Schalick said.

The company is also investing in tools to help insureds avoid losses. Earlier this year, they launched a new online risk management platform, PHLYGateway, which offers resources for insureds on how to create an employee handbook and trainings on issues such as recognizing workplace sexual harassment and discrimination.

If insureds have questions, they can consult a Best Practices Help Line, provided via the platform. That way, they can get on the spot risk management guidance to help them prevent claims.
