Across the Alps to the Adriatic Sea – that sounds like hard work! It is not quite as exhausting, if you choose the Alpe Adria cycle route. On the well marked paths the crossing of the Alps is also feasible for pleasure cyclists, because the ascent to the main ridge of the Alps is divided into two daily stages, the last one will be done by using the train. On your journey you will cross the idyllic Salzach valley, Bad Gastein, the impressive high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern, the sunny Drautal and the wildly rugged valley Kanaltal. Cycling on the Via Julia Augusta you pass Palmanova and Aquileia and get to the fishing village of Grado.

Characteristics of the route The tour runs along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. The most challenging section over the Pass Lueg can also be bypassed by train. The tour is suitable for children over 16 years.

Begeben Sie sich auf eine ausgiebige und abwechslungsreiche Entdeckungsreise auf zwei Rädern: Folgen Sie dem Alpe Adria Radweg von den Österreichischen Alpen bis ans Mittelmeer. Sie kommen aufgrund der zahllosen Eindrücke gar nicht mehr aus dem Staunen heraus. Gleich am Beginn des Alpe Adria Radwegs erwartet Sie mit der Mozartstadt Salzburg das erste Highlight. Radeln Sie los und entdecken schroffe Gebirgszüge und weite Täler entlang zahlreicher Flüsse. Jeder Anstrengung folgt sogleich die Belohnung mit atemberaubenden Aussichten und idyllischen Dörfern und Städten, wie Bad Gastein. Entspannen Sie die Beine bei rasanten Abfahrten vorbei an rauschenden Wasserfällen und kristallklaren Seen. Lassen Sie sich anstecken von der österreichischen Gemütlichkeit und der quirligen Geselligkeit der Italiener. Genießen Sie Köstlichkeiten aus der durch unterschiedlichste Einflüsse geprägten Küche. Nun fehlt nur noch eines: Das Meer! Können Sie sich einen besseren Abschluss Ihrer Radreise auf dem Alpe Adria Radweg vorstellen?

1. Tag: Individuelle Anreise nach Salzburg

Planen Sie eine frühzeitige Anreise in die weltberühmte Mozartstadt Salzburg. Zahlreiche geschichtliche und kulturelle Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die Schlösser Mirabell und Hellbrunn sowie die Getreidegasse mit Mozarts Geburtshaus erwarten Sie. Wir empfehlen den Besuch der Festung Hohensalzburg, die hoch über der Stadt thront. Genießen Sie von dort den wundervollen Blick auf die barocke Altstadt.

2. Tag: Salzburg – Golling, ca. 30 km

Auf geht´s Richtung Süden. Schnappen Sie sich gleich nach dem Frühstück Ihr Rad und folgen der Salzach flussaufwärts. Durch schattige Auen rollen Sie gemütlich bis Hallein, wo Sie das älteste Salz-Schaubergwerk der Welt erkunden. Sie wollen lieber in luftige Höhen als in die Tiefen eines Bergwerkes? Dann unternehmen Sie doch von Golling aus noch eine kleine Wanderung zum gleichnamigen Wasserfall – ein Naturschauspiel in beeindruckender Umgebung.

3. Tag: Golling – St. Johann, ca. 35 km

Die moderate Steigung auf den Pass Lueg bringen Sie gleich zu Beginn hinter sich. Dafür werden Sie mit einem herrlichen Ausblick auf das Tennengebirge belohnt. Das Salzachtal wird hier enger und Sie passieren die Salzachklamm. Rechts und links des Weges ragen die über 1000 Meter hohen Felswände in die Höhe. Weiter geht es nach Bischofshofen. Auf der Skisprungschanze findet am Dreikönigstag alljährlich das Abschlussspringen der Vierschanzentournee statt. Wenige Kilometer vom heutigen Übernachtungsort entfernt befindet sich die berühmte Liechtensteinklamm.

4. Tag: St. Johann – Mölltal, ca. 60 km + Bahnfahrt

Heute erwartet Sie der erste knackige Anstieg nach Oberuntersberg durch das wildromantische Gasteiner Tal. Im gemütlichen Kurort Bad Gastein angekommen sind die Höhenmeter in den Beinen fast vergessen, denn es erwartet Sie herzliche Gastfreundschaft und die atemberaubende Natur der Berge. Sie möchten es lieber etwas ruhiger angehen? Dann fahren Sie ab St. Johann bequem mit der Bahn bis nach Bad Hofgastein und sparen sich so einige Anstiege. Egal mit welchem Verkehrsmittel Sie nach Böckstein gelangt sind: Hier steigen Sie um auf den Zug rauschen Sie in nur 10 Minuten durch die Tauernschleuse auf die Südseite des Alpenhauptkammes nach Mallnitz im Mölltal.

5. Tag: Mölltal – Spittal, ca. 30 km

Im Sattel erwartet Sie eine gemütliche Fahrt im Mölltal durch eine beeindruckende Hochgebirgslandschaft. Bald erreichen Sie im Ort Möllbrücke die Drau und damit den sonnigen Süden Österreichs . Gemütlich radeln Sie durch idyllische Dörfer und genießen die atemberaubende Natur. Besichtigen Sie in Spittal an der Drau das Schloss Porcia, welches zu den bedeutendsten Renaissancebauten nördlich der Alpen zählt.

6. Tag: Spittal – Villach, ca. 40 km   

Diese Radetappe beginnen Sie eingerahmt von den imposanten Bergen der Kärntner Alpen. Sie radeln auf einem Deich entlang, mit wunderbarem Panoramablick auf die umliegenden Dörfer. Über Brücken und kleine Stege führt Sie der Alpe-Adria-Radweg nach Villach. Bezaubernde Natur, grasende Kühe und viele einladende Rastplätze machen Ihre Radtour zur reinsten Freude! Man könnte glauben, das Tal mache Ihnen Platz. Kurz vor Villach wird das Tal breiter und die Berge weichen in den Hintergrund. Mit Villach wartet die zweitgrößte Stadt Kärntens auf Sie. Der Dobratsch ist der Hausberg, er wird auch der Berg der Schmetterlinge genannt, da er bis zu 1300 verschiedene Falterarten beherbergt.

7. Tag: Villach – Venzone / Umgebung, ca. 60 – 70 km + Bahnfahrt

Heute lassen Sie Österreich hinter sich und begrüßen Italien. Den ersten Teil, einen anstrengenden Anstieg, überbrücken Sie bequem mit der Bahn. Bevor Sie sich in Tarvis auf Ihr Rad schwingen, bleiben Sie noch ein wenig in diesem traditionellen Städtchen. Unterschiedliche Sprachen, Kulturen und kulinarische Vielfalt der unterschiedlichen Küche treffen hier aufeinander. Gemächlich in die Pedale tretend radeln Sie durch das beschauliche Kanaltal auf dem Alpe Adria Radweg. Das enge Tal beeindruckt durch ein wunderschönes Panorama auf die umliegenden, bewaldeten Berge. 

8. Tag: Venzone – Udine, ca. 55 km

Die heutige Etappe des Alpe Adria Radwegs beginnt an den Ausläufern der Julischen Alpen. Es lohnt sich ein kleiner Abstecher nach Gemona. Das kleine historische Städtchen wurde nach einem Erdbeben liebevoll wieder aufgebaut. Die Säulen des Doms stehen seit dem Beben schief, was die Besichtigung des Wahrzeichens der Stadt jedoch nur interessanter macht. Schwingen Sie sich wieder in den Sattel und staunen über den Ausblick, der sich Ihnen bietet. Sie lassen die rauen Gebirgszüge hinter sich und folgen dem Weg, der nun von Weinreben gesäumt ist.

9. Tag: Udine – Grado, ca. 55 km

Spazieren Sie durch Udine und lassen sich von der Geselligkeit der Bewohner anstecken. Besichtigen Sie die venezianischen Bauwerke und kehren in eine typische Weinstube zur Verkostung der heimischen Rebsorten ein. Beschwingt radeln Sie durch weite Schilflandschaften und entlang kleiner Wasserfälle. Bald weht Ihnen der salzige Duft des Meeres um die Nase, ein Zeichen, dass das Ziel Ihrer Reise auf dem Alpe Adria Radweg nicht mehr fern ist. Das einstige Fischerstädtchen Grado liegt in einer Lagune, umgeben von einer wunderbaren Flora und Fauna.

10. Tag: Individuelle Abreise oder Verlängerung

Nach ereignisreichen Tagen endet Ihre Radreise auf dem Alpe Adria Radweg leider schon. Wenn Sie die Meeresluft noch länger spüren wollen, verlängern wir gerne Ihren Aufenthalt mit einer Zusatznacht.

Tourenbeschreibung.

Mit dem E-Bike über die Alpen wollte der WDR für seine Reisesendung  Wunderschön und wir wurden ausgewählt in der Planung mitzugestal ten, die Organisation vor Ort zu übernehmen und die Crew auf dem Weg  tatkräftig zu unterstützen. So sind wir im Juni 2018 mit Kameramann, Tonmeister, Moderator Marco Schreyl, Regisseurin Caro Wagner und  unserem 3-köpfigen Team aufgebrochen über den Alpe Adria Radweg  mit dem E-Bike die Alpen zu überqueren. Lustig war es, manchmal auch  recht herausfordernd alles unter den Hut zu bringen. Wir möchten allen im WDR-Team einen Dank aussprechen für diese tolle Erfahrung.  Ende Juni organisieren wir eine Sondertour auf den Spuren von WDR  Wunderschön. Mit Ihrer persönlichen Reisebegleitung durch Alps   2   Adria  entdecken Sie die Orte, die im Film besucht wurden.

Charakter der Strecke

Die Strecke verläuft vorwiegend auf gut ausgebauten Radwegen und verkehrsarmen Nebenstraßen. Der anspruchsvolle Abschnitt über den Pass Luegg kann mit dem Zug abgekürzt werden. Die Radreise ist für Kinder ab 16 Jahren geeignet.

Tour information

In a week across the Alps to the Adriatic Sea – that sounds like hard work! It is not quite as exhausting, if you choose the Alpe Adria cycle route. On the well marked paths the crossing of the Alps is also feasible for pleasure cyclists, because the ascent to the main ridge of the Alps is divided into two daily stages, the last one will be done by using the train.

On your journey you will pass the idyllic Salzach valley, Bad Gastein, the impressive high mountain landscape of the Hohe Tauern, the sunny Trautal and the wildly rugged canal valley. Cycling on the Via Julia Augusta you pass Palmanova and Aquileia and get to the fishing village of Grado. The tour runs along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. The section over the Pass Lueg can also be bypassed by train. We suggest you cycle the 8 days variant with an E-bike.

Route highlights

Day 1: salzburg.

Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Salzburg. A bicycle trip could not start more impressively than in Salzburg, the city of Mozart. You are surrounded by so many Baroque monuments in this beautiful old town. Take some delicious Mozartkugeln (typical Austrian confectionary) on your journey to the sea.

Day 2: Salzburg – Bischofshofen/St. Johann

(approx. 60 km)

With a view of the fortress Hohensalzburg you leave the city. In the distance the mountains are already visible. The first section takes you along the Salzach. On the way you will pass the former summer residence of the Salzburger Bishops, Hellbrunn palace. For more than 400 years, the extraordinary water games have been a delight for young and old. On the Tauern cycle path, the journey continues in the direction of Hallein, known for its crooked townhouses and above all for the white gold - salt. Another highlight on the way is the waterfall in Golling.

Day 3: Bischofshofen/St. Johann – Bad Gastein

(approx. 55 km)

The journey continues through the tranquil Gastein valley. Until the 20th century, it was only accessible along mountain paths and narrow roads. Framed by the peaks of the Hohe Tauern, you cycle along the Gasteiner Ache (river). Passing Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein you reach the famous health resort Bad Gastein. The „Montecarlo of the Alps“, as the place is often called, is known for its many splendid hotels from the „Belle Époque“. The main attraction here is the Gastein waterfall, which has been the focal point of many artists and poets

Day 4: Bad Gastein – Villach

(approx. 79 km + train - mostly downhill)

From Bad Gastein you continue to Böckstein and get on the train along the Tauernschleuse (railway line) to Mallnitz; then you cycle along the river Möll through the impressive mountain landscapes. This section of the cycle path is also known as the Glocknerradweg. It goes mostly slightly downhill and leads through the Hohe Tauern National Park. From there the Drau cycle path leads to Spittal, famous for its Renaissance castle of Porcia. The stage ends in the second largest city in Carinthia. Villach is not only famous for its Carnival, but also known for its Villacher Kirchtag (folklore festival). In addition, numerous places of interest await you. If you still have enough time, we recommend you to take a swim in one of the lakes around the city.

Day 5: Villach – Venzone/surroundings

(approx. 85-90 km or approx. 40-60 km + train, ticket not included)

Following the river Gail you leave Villach behind and shortly after you say goodbye to Austria and enter Italy. In the three-nation corner Italy-Austria-Slovenia extends the Kanaltal valley, whose main centre is the town of Tarvisio, on the Italian border. Here Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have been living together for hundreds of years, because all the three big European language families – Teutons, Romans and Slavs – join there. The town of Tarvisio is not only one of the most important mountain resorts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, but it is also famous for its winter offer in this region. Continuing through the valley of Kanaltal you can admire the beauty of the Friuli-Alps-Region with an intact, unspoilt nature and vast, intact forests. If you want, you can take the train (ticket not included) to Tarvisio o Ugovizza and shorten a part of the route.

Day 6: Venzone/surroundings – Udine

The small town of Gemona del Friuli, situated at the southern end of the Kanaltal Valley and at the foothills of the Julian Alps, is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The town is dominated by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which is well worth a visit. The wine prevails on today‘s stage. Hills full of vineyards line your way and invite you to taste some local wine. The town of Udine, characterised by Venetian influences, radiates peace and tranquillity; over a coffee in the „piazza“ or a stroll through the city centre you can admire its impressive buildings of the late Gothic and Renaissance.

Day 7: Udine – Grado

Accompanied by the breeze of the Scirocco you pass through reed landscapes and water canals and arrive to Grado, a historic city of fishers and one of the most popular beach resorts on the Adriatic sea. Along the way the city of Palmanova - UNESCO World Heritage Site- and the extensive excavation areas of the ancient city of Aquileia await your visit.

By car: Salzburg is well connected to international motorways, and this makes the city easy to reach. If you reach the City of Mozart from Austria, take the A1 or A10 Motorway, or drive in from Germany on the A8. By train: by offering numerous domestic as well as international connections, Salzburg Main Station is the most important rail hub in Western Austria. And since it lies right on the border with Germany, the station is administered jointly by Austrian Railways (ÖBB) and the German Rail (DB). Timetables on: www.deutschebahn.de, www.oebb.at, www.trenitalia.com. By plane: Salzburg W. A. Mozart Airport is the second-largest airport in Austria and is served by several different airlines. Furthermore, the major international airports in Vienna and Munich are only about 2 to 3 hours away using public transportation.

Itinerary for Hike the Alpe Adria Trail

Arrival in cividale del friuli.

Your first day is at your leisure, so make your way to Cividale del Friuli and take your time exploring this pretty town in the foothills.

Choose Your Hike to Prepotto

To begin your trip, you have a choice of two paths. You can walk to Castelmonte, a small hamlet with impressive views and a stunning 12th-century sanctuary. Alternatively, you can take a shorter walk by following the Alpe Adria Trail. Both finish in Prepotto where you can indulge in a glass of local wine.

Walk to Slovenia Villages

Today you’ll walk through the vineyards of the Collio as you hike along the border between Italy and Slovenia. Finish your hike on the hill-top village of Smartno which offers beautiful views of the Carnic Alps and across Friuli.

Journey Through the Vineyards

Your hike today will be through the sprawling vineyards that include some of the famous DOC vines. If you stopped for a tasting or two, we wouldn’t blame you! Your destination is Cormons, which is considered the cultural centre of the Collio.

Tonight, enjoy a glass of wine in the town square and explore at your leisure.

Explore the Görzer Collio

The trail today leads you through the hills and vineyards of the Görzer Collio. You’ll hike to Gradisca d’Isonzo, which was a Venitian Fortress and an Austrian prison before it became the interesting town it is today. You can visit the remains of the fortress walls, then visit La Serenissima to find some of the wines made from the vines you saw today!

Hike to Duino

On your hike today you’ll leave behind the lush vineyards and head into the karst landscape. Here you’ll find the scars left from WWI as well as underground waterways and river basins.

When you reach Monfalcone you can purchase a ticket on the public bus if you’d like to shorten your route. Otherwise, continue your walk to Duino and its cliff-top castle.

Walk the Rilke Trail to Trieste

Begin your day on the famous Rilke Trail. You’ll walk along the cliffs and then on to Trieste. Celebrate your successful journey by exploring the beautiful buildings and main square of the capital city of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Your tour officially ends after breakfast. Trieste is a beautiful city with a lot to explore, and you can choose to book additional hotel nights to extend your stay.
