Jimmy Eat World in Bend, OR on Amplified Echoes Tour

Concert Review: Jimmy Eat World Lacks Clarity in Bend on Amplified Echoes Tour

Possibly, one of the greatest overlooked bands, ever. Forgotten? Something at least.

It seems as though Jimmy Eat World belongs in the higher echelon of rock bands and most certainly among those that emerged in the alternative 90s era. However, the Mesa, AZ quartet of singer and guitarist Jim Adkins, drummer Zach Lind, Tom Linton on rhythm guitar and bassist Rick Burch quietly continue their foray into catchy hooks and timeless melodies as their biggest hit now more than 20 years old feels like yesterday.

Songs ranging from up-tempo rockers to pensive, sometimes dreamy melodies that might (or might not) contribute to heartache and lost loves, Jimmy Eat World celebrates their 30 th anniversary this year by headlining the Amplified Echoes Tour with Manchester Orchestra. OK, they “co-headline” but Jimmy closes the show with a song or two longer setlist.

A scorcher of a day enveloped Bend in central Oregon but temps cooled off by the time Jimmy Eat World took the stage Sunday at Hayden Homes Amphitheater in front of 3,000-plus, firing off a slick moving 16 song set lasting no more than 70 minutes with hits, deep album cuts and new releases that should all qualify as singles. And plenty more exist in their catalog begging for a bigger and longer show.

Yes, all songs played, that good. Some perhaps probably overlooked. An outstanding setlist only befuddled by some sound issues that started with the proggy “Congratulations,” the final song off 2019’s Surviving , the band’s “latest.” What band starts a show with the final song off their newest album? Place your bets on not many. Not sure what they have in store for their futures , but Jimmy Eat World released “Something Loud” a song about finding yourself in rock and roll and “Place Your Debts” last year, two outstanding new songs and both got the live treatment on this night.

Also, “Dizzy” off 2007’s Chasing This Light and “For Me This Is Heaven” from their 1999 album Clarity. Indeed, two of their biggest contributions to the charts in Bleed American and Futures enjoyed adding the most to the setlist with four off Bleed and five off Futures including the harmoniously soft “Kill” and “23” and the rockers “Bleed American” and “A Praise Chorus.” Fan and radio favorite “The Middle” closed without so much as an encore.

With this card, a potentially celebrated evening of live music, unfortunately…

Less a rock show and more an overpriced concert in the park, Jimmy Eat World played well but the venue , at least for those in the “outfield,” this place an amphitheater does not make. Literally an amenity-less park by day when not rocking under the stars at night along with the general admission seating, i.e. every concert goer for themselves, doesn’t work all that well. Clearly, the venue cleans up with the rental chair fees, if you choose and nope you can’t bring in your own and yes you need them. Halfway through the set I wondered where everyone went as chairs sat empty all-around. Oh, they crowded the “infield” choosing to stand closer to the stage. Maybe they heard something I didn’t. Better sound.

It wasn’t terrible by any stretch, but the open-air venue seems to disperse the sound waves resulting in a lack of total volume, not the decibel type. Muddy vocals at times with melodies not entirely sure and certain but overall a breadth of tone and audio strength evaporated in the night sky. Perhaps an extra few sets of speakers, directed to those not up front might help, but a true amphitheater manages to harness or at least channel the sound and this Frisbee throwing park setting fails to accommodate.

16 songs 70 minutes thats a fast moving set. Too bad the place itself isn’t organized better. They are probably working on a tight budget!

at least better or more sound equipment.

That’s too bad the venue quality didn’t measure up. That had to have been quite frustrating.

yes. hopefully they come back around again at a different place. they are quite good.

Review: jimmy eat world and manchester orchestra leave the armory speechless.

Everywhere emo music has been, Jimmy Eat World's been, too.

In the '90s, the Arizona-born band released split singles with post-hardcore acts like Christie Front Dive and Sense Field. In the '00s, they co-headlined with Warped Tour staples like Taking Back Sunday and Paramore. And in the '10s, they invited leaders of the emo revival like The Hotelier and Microwave as openers.

So it's fitting that now, 30 years into their life span, they finally share the stage with Manchester Orchestra , a veteran Atlanta-born act constantly blurring the lines between alt-rock, punk and pure cinema. On the co-headlining Amplified Echoes Tour stop at the Armory on Sunday night, Jimmy and Manchester Orchestra gave alt-rock fans everything they could possibly ask for.

In all-black attire, Jimmy Eat World arrived on stage like they arrived on rock radio in the early aughts — at a full sprint. On set list openers "Pain" and "Just Tonight..." Jim Adkins was frenetic, nonchalantly shaking his short bangs. By the time the band got to "Sweetness," beads of sweat cascaded down his cheek. Still, the band played on, impressing with a fan-friendly set list of familiar favorites.

In 2019, Adkins told Billboard that his early songwriting was "100 percent" unconscious, and as the band moved gracefully between 20-plus-year-old rockers like "Kill" and "Lucky Denver Mint," it seemed he could now play the classics from a coma if he wanted to.

From time to time, guitarist Tom Linton zoned out into the crowd, smiling contently as his hands fluttered from fret to fret as if they were completely autonomous. For Jimmy Eat World, it's all muscle memory at this point, but that didn't make the show any less fun.

While "Bleed American" and "Blister" are certified emo classics, rock ballads like "Hear You Me" are what set Jimmy apart from many of their peers. Pensive, tasteful and still remarkably catchy, the song was a nice way for fans to catch their breath after breakneck guitar hits like "A Praise Chorus" and "Big Casino."

On "23," electric guitar chords warped and bended to essentially lend their own vocals. When the song ended, the final seismic bass line reverberated through the chest cavity of everyone in the room.

Jimmy closed with the ubiquitous and hopeful hit "The Middle," and when the song ended, Adkins was exhausted. He turned his back to the crowd and wiped the sweat from his face with both hands. He took a victory lap on stage, and earned it, too. His band did enough to hold up their end of the co-headlining bargain, so when Manchester Orchestra sauntered on stage at 9:40 p.m., they were playing with house money.

They left many fans speechless anyways, which is a familiar theme for the Georgia band. Lyrically, frontman Andy Hull is perennially contemplating his speaking ability. "I can't speak, whatever I can speak" he sang on set list opener "Pride."

"You don't believe I can speak well at all," he says on "The Maze," an austere and stripped earworm the band performed later in the evening.

For what it's worth, Hull can do a lot more than speak well — he can sing with the best of them, too. Already a gifted lyricist, Hull also has one of contemporary rock's most powerful voices, and at the Armory, he proved it. Every major lyric Hull belted in downtown Minneapolis echoed and reverberated all the way to Northfield and back.

He delivered the chorus on "Dinosaur" in both a feathery falsetto and a snarling yelp. Hull gave the hook of the band's biggest hit, "The Gold," to the crowd, but one song later he returned to screaming on "Shake It Out." He also announced that the band was shooting a new music video during the song.

During venue-shakers like "Pale Black Eye" and "Cope," Hull writhed and wrestled at center stage, seemingly possessed by his own music. So did bassist Andy Prince, who fully lost it at the end of "I Can Barely Breathe," dipping his cherry red instrument to the floor and thrashing his body with it.

Adkins and Hull are both excitable frontmen, but while the former performed with a complacent confidence, Hull performed with obsessive fervor.

As Hull sang the final visceral lyrics of "The Silence," the show's closer, his voice warmly reverberated through the speakers like a conversation in a quiet room. After finishing, he leaned back and let the mic stand crash to the floor, exhaling a sign of relief and revealing what he and Adkins have in common most: both singers left the Armory stage breathless on Sunday.

The Amplified Echoes Tour Review

Written by alina velasquez on august 18, 2023.

On Monday, August 7th, Jimmy Eat World and Manchester Orchestra brought the the Amplified Echoes Tour to Houston’s 713 Music Hall with special guest, Middle Kids , bringing the audience back to the early 2000s era of alternative pop-punk.

Middle Kids

Australian Trio, Middle Kids , opened the night with a more relaxed and intimate set consisting of eight songs from their self-titled EP as well as their latest album release Today We’re the Greatest . Fairly new to the music scene, Middle kids consists of Hannah Joy (lead vocalist), Tim Fitz (guitarist), and Harry Day (percussionist). Joy expressed her gratitude on behalf of the band for the opportunity to tour with two of their favorite childhood bands.

We are super grateful to be here. We’ve been longtime fans of both bands and are so lucky to be on this tour. Hannah Joy

Manchester Orchestra

Manchester Orchestra gives off that nostalgic sound when all the cool, older folks out would blast from their CD players in their cars on their way to school every morning. Its one of those rare bands that actually gets better with age. Co-headliner Manchester Orchestra, an American indie-rock band from Atlanta, came out strong with some of their newer songs such as “ Keel Timing ” and “ Bed Head ” leading into their more well-known music from hit albums A Black Mile to the Surface and I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child .

This four-member band, Andy Hull (lead vocalist/songwriter/guitarist), Andy Prince (bassist), Robert McDowell (lead guitarist), and Tim Very (percussionist), had the crowd on their feet the whole time screaming and singing along. During one of their songs, the band even stopped playing, encouraging the audience to sing solo, before jumping back into the song without missing a beat. The crowd loved every moment and was left wanting more while the crew got ready to bring out the next alternative rock legend, Jimmy Eat World.

Jimmy Eat World

The nostalgic feeling you would get when your older sibling would blast “The Middle” from their room while you listen next door, desperately hoping they would let you in, is the entire vibe of this band. Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, Arizona pop-punk legends, Jimmy Eat World , put on a killer, nostalgia-filled show. The set spanned the band’s entire discography, bringing back so many memories for 90’s pop-punk music lovers everywhere. The band opened the set with hits from their most successful album, Bleed American (released back in 2001), all the way to their latest album Surviving: Phoenix Sessions (released in 2021).

Band members Jim Adkins (lead vocalist/lead guitarist), Tom Linton (guitarist/vocalist), Rick Burch (bassist) Zach Lind (percussionist), have been making music since the late 90s and the audience had been through it all with band. The audience sang along to every word and danced to every song, making the band even more excited to be performing again.

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much. This is the best monday night crowd we’ve ever had. In rock and roll there’s no mondays. They’re all rock and roll nights.” Jim Adkins

Leaving the best for last, the audience roared to their feet when the band finally played the song everyone was waiting for “The Middle” and the night came to end. All in all, the night was definitely one to remember. Check out more tour dates here !
