Big Australia Bucket List

Absolutely EVERYTHING to see, do and experience in Australia

25 BEST Australia Travel Apps (RoadTrips, Camping, Drinks etc!)

All hail the interweb! Although there certainly are good points and bad points when it comes to an unlimited flow of information, it’s safe to say that in the travel space, travel planning has never been easier. And when it comes to Australia, with its size and wealth of things to see, do and experience in every corner, downloading a set of helpful travel apps is an absolute must.

But in a jam-packed mobile app store and multiple apps seemingly doing the same thing, it can be tough to know where to start and what you really need. And that’s where we come in. We’ve collected our favourite Australian travel apps that we recommend any visitor to Australia (and even Aussies themselves!) download that help make travel planning in Oz a breeze.

Whether you are road tripping, camping, or flying, there are apps to help you find the best deals, routes and fares. While in a destination there are apps for finding your nearest happy hour for discount food and drink, find your zen on the nation’s beaches or stargaze with an astronomy app (and actually know what you are looking at!). And when it comes to managing your money on your travels, we’ve got you covered with budgeting, spending trackers, and receipt logging apps.

The possibilities are endless so to help you narrow down exactly what you need, we’ve grouped them into sections such as must-have Australian Apps, the best apps for an Australian road trip, helpful travel apps for managing your money and, finally, generally the best travel apps that can be used and utilized in any country. And best of all – most of these are also the best free travel apps on the market. So scroll down and start downloading!

Must-Have Australia Travel Apps (Camping, Happy Hour, Flights etc)

The happiest hour.

App Interface of The Happiest Hour App

The app also helps users track down happy hour-related food deals, from pizza and pasta to dumplings and almost everything in between. Obviously, the bigger (and busier) the Australian city, the more options the app will display.

Available on both Google Play for Android devices and the App Store for iPhones .

Wikicamps Australia

App interface of Wikicamps showing maps and features

Kept up to date by users as they travel, it is an ever-growing resource packed with invaluable information – making it one of the Top Travel Apps in Australia. And with the offline map function, it’s the perfect app for finding all things camping (and road trip) related. Easily one of the most useful travel apps in Australia. Download it now (on Android or iPhone ) and start planning your next Aussie adventure.

Screenshot of Beachsafe Desktop Website

What you may not realise is that not Australian beaches are suitable for swimming and that’s where Beachsafe comes in. Brought to you by the Australian Surf Life Saving Association, you can search every beach for weather, hazards and water. Although they won’t always have information on dangerous rips, and so we recommend you swim at patrolled beaches between the distinctive red and yellow flags at all times.

Available in the Play Store & App Store – it is a must-have app for travelling in Australia.

The Outbound Collective

The Outbound Collective App header image

It’s the perfect inspirational app for exploring nature near to you when you’re not sure what you want to do or have landed in a new destination and are feeling a little uninspired. It’s one of the best free travel apps for exploring Australia and is available on iPhone and Android . (There’s also a tours and lodging tab – but we recommend sticking with just the local adventures. There are better apps for hotels & tours!)

Dawn Patrol

Dawn Patrol App Interface

While the Dawn Patrol app (linked to your Apple Watch) is really not necessary when you’re trying to catch your first wave, for those who are at home on a board, it can be a great way to track each session in the water and records details about the break, how many waves you catch, how far you travel etc.

Man holding a phone with the Netflix logo on the screen in front of a green wall

Although it’s not free, for a small monthly subscription you can have a range of TV and movies at your fingertips. Download a selection of movies and TV before you head off on your next adventure (using your home internet, rather than data!) – and stay entertained even when the Wifi is weak. (Available on both iPhone & Android)

AllTrails App Artwork

AllTrails have over 200,000 curated trail maps around the world – with over 7000 of them available for Australia.

Get inspired by local walking and biking trails and nature opportunities near you, and read user reviews and tips to find out what to know before you set off. The maps can be downloaded and used to track your adventures in real-time (if you don’t mind paying the annual fee), or can be used for free via mobile data while you’re out and about. You can even use the GPS on your phone to track your trails – which may help you retrace your steps if you get lost!

Free Wifi Finder

Free Wifi sign on a window

You can also use the tracking functions to monitor proposed routes and the app will send you a notification when it’s the perfect time to grab a bargain.

StarTracker

Australian camping in a forest under a starry sky

If you’re heading out into the country, the outback or just one of our incredible national parks, the StarTracker app is great fun for exploring the stars at night. Simply open the app, point your phone’s camera to the sky, and the app will tell you what you are looking at. Stars, planets, or constellations – it’s hours of fun.

(You can also point the phone at the ground and see what stars are on the other side of the world!) Get the App in the Playstore or AppStore .

Top Travel Apps for an Australian Road Trip

Roadtrippers.

Roadtrippers App

Plan your route, find attractions along the way, estimate driving times – RoadTrippers is a favourite road trip travel app has been the go-to app across the globe for putting together itineraries for years. Is invaluable when it comes to navigating the outback on our Aussie roads. Download the app here .

Woman holding a phone with the Spotify App open and headphone dangling on the table below

The real-time reporting of traffic accidents or simply, more traffic than normal, means the app gives you the quickest route, even after you have selected your destination. And if you have a trip scheduled for the next day, the app will alert you if there has been an unusual incident on your route and if you need to leave earlier.

The app also has a rideshare/carpool function, so even if you are not driving yourself, you can use the app to find others heading your way and share the fuel costs; or offer up a spare seat if you have one. You can download the app on iOS and Android here .

Maps.me app on a phone

Pus, one of my favourite features – lots of viewpoints and points of interest built into the app that you can preview to decide if you want to stop along your way.

It’s one of the best free travel apps on the list. Download it on Google Play or the App Store .

Free Travel Apps for Managing Your Money On the Road

Trail wallet (ios) or travel spend (ios/android).

Trail Wallet App image

For those wanting something just for receipts, we recommend Smart Receipts. This is particularly good for grouping expenses into lists that work for you (destination, category etc)

TravelSpend app interface

Travel Spend is similar to Trail Wallet in terms of spending tracking, adding expenses on the go and keeping track of your budget – and is the best alternative for those who are Android devotees.

XE Currency Converter

XE App interface

The exchange rates are live where you are connected to the internet – and where you are not, it uses the rate saved from the last time you opened the app. (Our top tip if you are relying on hotel wifi – open the app just before you leave your hotel for the day so your app exchange rates are never more than a few hours old.)

The XE Currency App also offers international money transfers, however for the best rates we recommend using Wise – whom you can also get a travel credit card for which lets you hold multiple currencies. This allows you to spend in whichever currency you like, and convert cash at the best rate at any given time.

The Best Travel Apps for Australia (and beyond!)

TripIt: Travel Planner

The app will group together and organise activities and tickets that fall within the date ranges of any return flights, and will track your travels as time passes. The app can also pull tickets out and log them automatically from your email when you link it to the app, and you can manually add them if it misses any.

For busy travel periods, this app is invaluable and as all your trips are stored in the app, can help you keep track of all your past adventures too.

Hand holding a mobile phone with the Uber loading screen visible

Wherever you are in Australia, it is of vital importance that everyone has the opportunity to get home safely, and rideshare apps such as Uber and Ola offer the ability for guests to track their drivers, their route and even share their current location with others.

We recommend having both downloaded and checking your fare on each before making a booking. Depending on surge charging at any given time, one app may be significantly cheaper than the other. (I also love that your Ola account earns you Velocity frequent flyer points, but I’m just a big points geek! )

The Best Apps for an Australian Road Trip

Travel Apps. Which ones are good and useful for you and your travel adventures? There are loads on the market these days but how do you know which ones are most practical and useful for you. We share with you our selection of best travel apps that we love and use on our Road Trip’s in Australia.

Wikicamps is one of the best campsite apps to have for Aussie Road Trips. This app is recommended by many caravanners/campers and backpackers and we know why because it’s the ultimate Australian road trip planning app.

It’s filled with information on Campgrounds, Caravan Parks, Backpacker Hostels, Day Use Areas (Toilets/ Dump Points) and Points of Interest.

The  Wikicamps  app gives you details on specific places, so if its a caravan park you’re looking for, it will have a contact number, web address, photos, and user reviews.

There are a couple of negatives with the app, it does cost money to download it’s now $7.99, I think we originally purchased the app when it was $6 so the price is going up. The other negative is you need to download all the content on your phone or iPad if you know you will be in an area that has no phone signal or Wi-Fi connection. Preparation is the key!

Australian Road Trip

This app is created by the folks at WikiCamps. The   Fuel Map Australia  app is free to download. And is a wicked road trip planner app for Aussie roads!

With the app, you can search for fuel stations nearby to your current location or zoom in to a location you’re are heading to and see if fuel/diesel/gas is available and the price.

Emergency Australia

To stay up to date with official warnings, incidents and emergencies download the  Emergency App . This is free to download and works Australia wide. It delivers warnings and incident information that is issued by Official Agencies across Australia. No matter the warning, Bushfire, Flood, Cyclone, Severe Weather Events, Storms the app has it all. You can set up watch areas around your location so you know that you and your family are safe.

Please note, this App is now retired, however if it’s available to download, we still recommend it as it refers you to the individual state emergency apps that are recommended to have on your phone.

Australian Road Trip

Toilet Finder

This is a new app for us, but it’s a bloody genius idea! For the ladies, there is nothing worse than having to pee behind a bush in the middle of now where. With the  Toilet Finder  app, this helps you locate the nearest toilet to your location. The app is free to download too!

We loved  Hema Maps  whilst we’re on our Kimberley Trip in 2017, we downloaded offline Maps and we found this easier to use than the WikiCamps Offline Maps. It was great to gauge a true indication of how far you were away from Towns/Cities, certain key attractions and rest stops. HemaMaps does cost and we paid around $50 for it but it was well worth it.

Facebook & Instagram

Our favourite social sharing apps. Facebook has succeeded as it does a great job of connecting people worldwide and enabling them to share their lives and things they discover.

Both Wayne and I have our Facebook accounts as well as our travel & business page Love Your Travels . This is a great way for us to share our adventures with our family, friends and in many of the various camping, caravan and travel blogging groups. Follow Love Your Travels on Facebook.

Instagram is an online platform to capture and share the world’s moments. We find Instagram is a better way to connect with fellow travelers through commenting on photos and taking short 15 second videos of where we are. Follow Love Your Travels on Instagram.

Both apps are free to download if you don’t have either we suggest you do!

Australian Road Trip

YouTube is the best way to pass time by watching the millions of videos on YouTube, or even get creative and get yourself out there!

We started our YouTube Channel Love Your Travels, so we can capture a wider audience and show who we are and where we travel to. YouTube is free to download.

Being from Victoria, our state has recycling but there is no cashback recycling scheme. Many states around Australia offer Cash Back when you take your recycling to allocated depots.

Travelling through NSW we discovered the cashback scheme at depots across the state. Recycle Cans and Bottles and get cashback! We were able to have it linked directly to our PayPal account so we were able to recycle at locations and get cashback into our account in a short time. There may be other apps for each state, this is what we found directly in New South Wales.

Gas Finder (Refills & Swaps)

Gas Finder (Refills & Swaps) App

The Gas Finder app (created by WikiCamps) is another one of our best apps for travelling Australia. You can use it to find the nearest locations for gas bottle refills and swaps, plus check out the latest prices.

Remember, as with any crowd-sourced app, the information provided is based on what other users input. So, the last pricing recorded may not be the most current, but is often a good guide.

If you do a lot of off-grid camping or cooking with gas, then you’ll want to be able to source out gas bottle refills on the go. We generally went through a 9kg gas bottle per fortnight while free camping in the caravan (using it for cooking and hot water).

12 thoughts on “📲 27 BEST Travel Apps Australia (Camps, Maps, Safety…)”

Wikicamps has stopped working as it used to, it appears to have had an update and now it is extremely out of date and won’t sinc between my computer and tablet even though they are signed in on the same account. Is anyone else having these issues. I am thinking of downloading a different planner= maybe Campermate, any feedback would be appreciated. Regards Dennis

Hi Dennis, I was also having trouble with the new WikiCamps update. It wouldn’t load past 16%, which I know others were struggling with as well. I uninstalled the app on my phone and reinstalled it. Thankfully that solved the issue. I’m thinking after so many people having problems with the latest update that WikiCamps must be aware of the bugs and will hopefully get them sorted quickly.

These are amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing, they will be super helpful when we do our road trip through Australia. The public bathroom finder will be crucial with Logan’s tiny bladder lol and the WikiCamps is my fav! That makes it so easy to find campgrounds and pick the one that is right for us.

For sure! The bathroom finder seems to be a popular one and WikiCamps is by far one of the most used apps for travelling Australia.

The number of apps just for camping and road trips was interesting to see. The National Toilet Map would be one for someone like me with a baby bladder. The safety apps are a great idea. Having more than one map app saved us on our last road trip.

There are definitely many useful road tripping apps around these days. Thank goodness for modern technology.

There has been a paradigm shift in the way we all travel, thanks to Apps that help out in diverse areas. This is a really comprehensive list of Apps that will be useful when travelling in Australia. We too rely heavily on apps, that include Google Maps, and even an app that helps us find vegetarian restaurants in whichever country we are in.

Couldn’t agree more. A specific eatery/ restaurant app for worldwide travels is a great idea – it never ceases to amaze me, the things that people come up with.

Wow, so many camper related apps- who knew! I can see why when travelling with an RV you’d have to have some like the ones listed – Air Camp, Gas Finder, Public Toilets, Weather Zone and Post. It makes me curious to know what ones we have available in Canada.

They definitely make life easy in this modern age. I’m sure Canada would have some useful ones too – maybe even WikiCamps.

Love all the practical advice in this post! I think my favorite is the way to get mail. We’re constantly receiving packages/post for our business so Australia Post would be so important! Also think the public toilets is pretty awesome and I wish the US had something like that! If you’re hiking or camping there is no great way to find one!!

Yes the Australia Post App is amazing when you’re on the road. It really streamlines post and parcels. I’m surprised the US doesn’t have a similar toilet app – maybe a good inventive idea!

10 of the Best Apps for A Road Trip

australian road trip planner app

Written By Bastian Graf

Australia is such a vast land with so much to see and do in every direction or road you should take. There is no better way to explore the changing landscapes and notable landmarks around the country than with a road trip! Road trips allow you to make several stops to check out the best of the area, and since we live in the age of technology, planning and exploring is easier than ever! So, before you jump in the car, check out these road trip apps to help you make the best of your journey.

If your road trip consists of camping along the way, then WikiCamps road trip app is a must. This app will provide up-to-date information on a whole range of camping options. It will show you live information on information points, campgrounds, hostels, caravan parks, day use areas and general points on interest. If you’re on a budget, this road trip planner app will also help you find free and low-cost campgrounds to stay. It also works offline, so there is no worrying about using data or finding Wi-Fi.

Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app which will help you get from A to B in the quickest and most effective way at that time. It has the advantage over traditional map apps as other drivers in your area share real-time traffic and road information, such as incidents and traffic jams in areas you should avoid. This route planner app is perfect for saving time and fuel on your road trip. It is a great app for when travelling anywhere, but especially in heavier traffic areas such as cities.

Roadtrippers

As the name suggests, Roadtrippers is the perfect app for you, the road tripper! This road trip app is perfect for planning your journey, finding amazing places, and fascinating detours. It helps you to map out your journey and see what others did along the way, with plenty of user-generated content supplied from other like-minded road trippers! You can browse millions of places along your route and see free travel guides and itineraries. This is the perfect app for anyone who’s curious and looking for a little more inspiration for their journey.

Emergency AUS

Unfortunately, Mother Nature sometimes gets in the way of our plans. In certain locations and times of year, Australia has extreme weather conditions which can hinder your trip without proper planning and awareness. We may not always be aware of what is happening nearby when we are on the road, so the Emergency AUS app is perfect. It alerts users to any official warnings and incidents of bushfires, floods, storms and other severe weather events, so you know to avoid those areas and stay safe. It’s a great road trip planner app too as the GPS location features will alert you when you may be coming close to some unideal weather conditions.

There is nothing worse than being incredibly desperate for a toilet whilst on a road trip. Luckily, there are many public toilets in Australia which are free to use. Now you can find where these toilet facilities are located thanks to the Toilet Map app funded by the Australian government. It will give details on the 18,000 public toilets, including accessibility details. You won’t be left wondering when you will next find a toilet with this road trip app.

Never be left with the stress of finding a petrol station when you’re nearing empty with the Fuel Map app. While the app will show you the closest petrol stations, users contribute to the information, including the last known fuel prices. You can opt to find the cheapest fuel stations around and also update the prices yourself for other users. Fuel Map also has a fuel log where you can input when you’ve filled up and determine your vehicle’s fuel economy.

Pit Stop Planner

The Australian Government recommends that you take a pit stop every two hours of driving to give yourself at least 15 minutes of rest. Instead of just pulling over or driving until you find something suitable (which may take longer than expected) then consider the Pit Stop Planner app by Budget Direct. Pit Stop Planner is incredibly simple to use. You can get an idea ahead of time of what your journey will look like by going to their website and putting in the start and end of your journey. The next page will show your route, but if it isn’t quite right, you can move the markers on the map. It will show you your trip length in km, estimated trip time, and how many pit stops are recommended.

Of course, no road trip would be complete without the perfect playlist! Whether you prefer busting out to the hottest tunes of the month or Vanessa Carlton’s ‘A Thousand Miles’, Spotify is a must-have when it comes to enjoying the perfect road trip in today’s era. You can create your own perfect playlist or discover new awesome recommendations, or if you prefer, Spotify also has lots of great podcasts to tune into for those long drives.

Off Exploring

On a road trip, there is usually so much to see and do, so why not document your trip easily using the Off Exploring app? Off Exploring sets you up with a free travel blog where you can upload as many snippets of your journey as you’d like, including photos, and geotag the locations. This creates a record of your trip that you can share with friends and family.

Table of Contents

18 Best Australia Travel Apps!

Transport and taxi apps in australia.

It’s also worth having the Didi app for your time in Australia – which serves as a direct alternative to Uber. Didi is a taxi booking service, and generally fares are cheaper than Uber.

The advantage of having the Didi app alongside the Placie app is that Didi normally their own discount codes for signing up, as well as regularly emailing discount offers. Therefore by having Didi you can get more money off your rides, meaning you can spend less on taxis during your time in Australia!

Accommodation and Hotel Apps

Booking.com.

The Booking.com app is an essential app for traveling Australia, allowing you to book hostels, hotels, and apartments around the country! With well over 10,000 accommodation options across Australia, there is something for every budget – from budget hostel dorms to luxury hotels and apartments!

Booking.com’s Genius loyalty program helps you save even more money, and you are rewarded with better discounts the more regularly you book through the platform. On top of that, in some instances you can save even more money by booking through the app as there are special app only prices for some properties!

Download the app now via the iOS app store or the Google Play store.

If you’ve found this article (or other articles on the site) helpful, then please use our affiliate link below as we make a small commission on each booking you make – at no extra cost to you. Once you’ve downloaded the app, simply click the link below and it should take you back to the app to book your accommodation!

Trusted Housesitters

Trusted Housesitters is one of the best Australia travel apps, giving you the chance to save thousands of dollars on accommodation. Hosts offer free accommodation in their home in exchange for looking after their pets whilst they are away.

Not only do you save on accommodation, but you normally end up staying in a nicer place. On top of that, you get to hang out with people’s pets – which is great if you’re animal lovers like us!

Of course there are responsibilities that come with housesitting, such as walking the dog or cleaning up litter trays – so you will need to be able to commit to caring for the pets properly during your stay. It’s common to see housesits listed all around Australia, ranging from weekend stays to longer stays of a month or more!

If you do want to housesit through the platform then there is an annual fee, but you will easily make the money back through what you save on paying for accommodation! There are various tiers of membership, but the cheapest option is just $129USD/£99 GBP for a year!

One thing to be aware of is that from a visa standpoint, housesitting is considered as work as you are looking after someone’s pet and receiving ‘payment’ in the form of a free stay. Of course this isn’t an issue if you’re visiting Australia on a working holiday visa – and is a great way to stay in some amazing homes and connect with like-minded people too!

The Trusted Housesitters app is free and you can browse listings with a free account before deciding if you want to pay for a membership. If you sign up via the link below you will receive 25% off your first year of membership, in addition to all the money you will save on accommodation too!

Shopping Apps

Flybuys .

Sign up to the Flybuys app to make every dollar count on your Australian travels. Flybuys is the rewards program for Coles – one of the two main supermarket chains in Australia.

Collect points when you spend on your purchases from groceries to petrol, and then use the points to get money off future shops. Flybuys members also get exclusive discounts and offers, from occasional free items to triple points boosts to fuel discounts.

During our stay one of the best offers we got was $50 off if we spent $50 in four consecutive weeks – which we needed to spend anyway to buy groceries! If you’re planning to shop in supermarkets during your stay, make sure to sign up for Flybuys as your points can quickly add up to save you money!

Everyday Rewards

Everyday Rewards is essentially the same as Flybuys, except that its the rewards program for Woolworths – the other main supermarket chain in Australia.

Sign up to Everyday Rewards to collect points as you spend, earn fuel discounts, and get access to exclusive offers. Even though we shopped at Woolworths less during our stay, we found that we still managed to earn $30 in vouchers just through occasional spends – so it’s worth signing up to save some money!

Using the best travel apps in Australia gets you to places like this - a waterfall near in Cairns

Dan Murphy’s

Dan Murphy’s is an Australian liquor store with over 250 stores across the country. If you plan to buy alcohol during your stay in Australia, then it’s definitely worth downloading the Dan Murphy’s app and signing up for a free membership.

Members get access to exclusive discounts, which can help you save quite a lot of money! With their lowest liquor price guarantee, they are normally the cheapest store to buy alcohol at – and the discounts mean you save even more!

As well as giving you access to membership discounts, the app also can be used to arrange orders for collection or delivery.

Maps and Location Apps

What3words is a brilliant app for identifying exact locations, which can be extremely useful if you happen to break down on a road trip. The app divides the world into grids of 3 metres by 3 metres and then assigns a unique three word address to each section.

This can be useful in a variety of ways, particularly if you break down in a remote part of Australia. Sharing this three word phrase for your location will help recovery services pinpoint your exact location, which means you can get help quicker!

Google Maps

This one is pretty self explanatory, but Google Maps is a pretty useful tool anywhere in the world. Whether you’re walking around Sydney or driving along the Great Ocean Road , Google Maps can help you find your way.

It’s a good idea to download offline maps if you’re going on a trip, as that way you can still find your way even if you don’t have signal. To get offline maps simply click on your profile picture at the top right of the app, and then head to the offline maps section and select the area you want to download.

The 12 Apostles you can find places like this by some travel apps we recommend to use in Australia

Road Trip Travel Apps in Australia

Wikicamps australia.

Wikicamps is an essential app for any Australian road trip, listing campsites, caravan parks, facilities, and points of interest around the country! The app shows all of these locations and more on a map, so you can plan the best campsites to stop off at on your route.

One of the most useful things about the app is the user reviews, which can be very helpful when picking where to stay. These reviews give up to date pricing information, as well as general information about each campsite along with an overall rating – so you can avoid poor quality campsites!

Of course signal can be unreliable in remote parts of Australia, but fortunately you can download sections of the map to be accessible offline – so you can always access the information you need!

There is a one-off cost of $7.99 AUD to download the Wikicamps Australia app, but if you’re planning a road trip then it’s undoubtedly worth the cost. It’s the only app on this list that you need to pay for, but will make your life a lot easier on the road!

If you’re thinking of planning a road trip but haven’t sorted a campervan or motorhome yet, we recommend using the Motorhome Republic website to find the best deals. They compare prices between a variety of operators to help you find the best deal!

Click here to find the best campervan rental deals on the Motorhome Republic website!

A great travel app to use in Australia is Wikicamps where you can find where to park your caravan in spots like this

Campermate Australia & NZ

Campermate is another great app for road trips around Australia. It’s similar to Wikicamps in many ways, with the app listing various campsites, points of interest, and facilities around Australia.

One of the main differences is that Campermate is a free app, but this does mean that there are adverts in the app itself. It’s still a useful tool either alongside Wikicamps or in place of it, and you can also download offline maps so you can access the app even when you have no signal!

Like with Wikicamps, the user comments within the app are useful for getting an insight into a campsite before you stay.

Spotify/Apple Music/Youtube Music

If you’re planning to do a road trip in Australia then you will want to have a good music streaming app. Road tripping in Australia involves some very long distance driving, and so having a good playlist is a great way to make it more interesting!

With a premium subscription to one of these apps you can download playlists for offline use, so even if you lose signal you can keep listening! On our trip from Melbourne to Perth we lost signal for over a day whilst driving across the Nullabor – and if we hadn’t downloaded our playlists we would have had no music for this entire time!

Some of the travel apps listed are only available if you have your location set as Australia in the iOS app store or Google Play store. In some instances you may need to create a new account in order to be able to download the apps as they are restricted to the Australian store.

Cluttered maps can be confusing.

Higher battery usage than Google Maps.

Waze  is a community-driven travel app that shows you the shortest possible route to your destination. Like Google Maps, Waze makes real-time adjustments for traffic jams and other obstacles—but Waze is often more accurate since it caters specifically to drivers.

The app syncs with your Google Calendar and can tell you when you should leave for appointments based on traffic. There's also a cool option to record your own voice and use it for directions .

Know Exactly When and Where to Make a Pit Stop: iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Access to detailed summaries of what's at the next exit (including gas prices at nearby gas stations).

Search for the next 100 exits from your location.

The app can only be used on major U.S. exit-based highways.

No offline access, so you'll use your data plan while you're on the road.

Making a pit stop for food, gas, or a bathroom break is easy when you have the iExit app. Using your device's GPS, the app offers helpful suggestions for when and where to stop based on your location along the highway.

Whether you're looking for well-known franchises like Starbucks and Walmart to convenient amenities like free Wi-Fi and truck or trailer parking, this app has you covered.

Find the Cheapest Fuel Nearby: GasBuddy

An in-app gas payment feature.

Opportunity to save 10 cents per gallon on your first fill-up and five cents per gallon on every fill-up after.

The app can take up a lot of data and battery life as it runs in the background.

GasBuddy is an app specifically designed to find nearby gas stations and save money on gas. Use it to find the cheapest gas in your area and filter gas stations by amenities like car washes, restaurants, and bathrooms.

It's the app you want to have if you're serious about finding the cheapest gas around. Information comes from users like you, so you have the most up-to-date prices.

Never Forget an Item: PackPoint Premium Packing List

Access to a built-in library of items to pack with the ability to add or remove items as needed.

An elegant, intuitive app interface.

Can't input multiple destinations for a single trip.

Not a free app.

PackPoint helps you make sure you have everything you need based on where you're going and what you're doing. In addition, the app takes into consideration the length of your trip and the expected weather conditions. Perhaps best of all, this app turns a mundane chore into something that's actually quite fun.

ParkMe is the only app that also includes street parking and parking meter rates where available, in addition to parking lots.

Real-time updates on available parking spots.

Rates and hours may be inaccurate in some areas.

ParkMe claims to be the world's largest and most accurate parking database. It allows you to purchase your parking spot through the app and compare prices across parking providers to help you save more money.

If you're road tripping around major cities in the U.S., Canada, or Europe, this app can be a huge help. You can even compare parking options and prices so that you always get the best deal.

Automate Your Itinerary: TripIt

Automatically creates itineraries from your inbox.

Widget displays trip details on your home screen.

Annoying amount of alerts by default.

If you're planning a trip, you'll likely have a lot of confirmation emails for hotels, appointments, restaurants, and attractions. TripIt syncs with your inbox and uses that information to compile an itinerary so that you don't have to scramble for it.

The free version is fine for road trips, but if you ever fly, the premium version gives you the option to upgrade seats and track reward miles.

In addition to your phone, laptop, and tablet, other travel tech essentials include chargers, headphones, travel adapters, cameras, luggage trackers, and off-grid communications

Yes. You can use Google Maps as a trip planner through the “Places” and “My Maps” features. Both the Google Maps website and app let you save locations to lists and get directions.

Travel Apps Australia for a Road Trip

Last updated on 9 December, 2022

Smartphones and tablets have become the must have for touring Australia, so much so that these days you’d be hard pressed to find any caravanner or camper without one. It is hardly surprising when travel apps, Australia specific, all on one convenient device can serve so many functions for your road trip.

The must have apps for travelling Australia are those that help you to plan, track and record your travels. Apps can also help you to navigate, communicate, save money, find the best caravan parks or free camping and much more. There seems to be multiple apsp for everything these days and because of this it can be confusing and overwhelming trying to decide which are the best and the ones you will actually use. After more than 2 years living on the road full-time we can take the guess-work out of deciding the best apps for a road trip.

What are the best apps for a road trip around Australia? Keep reading further for our comprehensive list.

Camping apps.

download

WikiCamps Australia is the best app for camping in Australia and for this reason is the only paid app on our list priced at $8 for a lifetime time subscription. There are many features to this camping app with it most often being used to find suitable campgrounds or camp sites. The app is simple to use to find campgrounds, caravan parks and hostels that suit your specific needs by using the app’s many filters. For us, when looking for campgrounds we use the filters to find low-cost and free camping in Australia that are also dog friendly campgrounds.

The WikiCamp app also has a trip planner. We use the trip planner to keep track of where we have been more than we do for future planning but this more to do our travel plans change so often!

When it comes to using this camping app it can take a few attempts at using it to get the most out of it. Our advice is use the filters and work out which ones are best for your situation. The rest of the features of the app may or may not be useful to you, play around with it to discover what works for you.

Aircamp is a free camping Australia app. We think this is the other of the best camping apps available. We like it because it is easy to use, it has very similar filters to WikiCamps so you can easily find free camps and caravan parks that suit your needs.

The Aircamp app more pleasing visually and is easier to navigate however it doesn’t yet have the same amount of information and reviews so can feel a little lacking at times. That said, Aircamp has been more useful during Covid-19 travel restrictions due to a new filter for campgrounds open to essential travellers. This has been invaluable to full-time travellers who needed to find campgrounds and caravan parks during travel restrictions.

Must Have Travel Apps Australia

australian road trip planner app

Planning a road trip around Australia? Polarsteps is a roadtrippers app for planning, tracking and sharing your travels. Features of the Polarsteps app is that it has an itinerary planner, the travel tracker automatically tracks your travels for you, you have control over your privacy settings meaning you can either keep your travel information to yourself, share with family and friends or share with everyone. This travel app also allows you to upload and share photos and travel stories. It is one of the best travel journals you can use on your trip.

The Gas Finder app is a free app available to download when you pay for the WikiCamps app subscription. This gas app gives information about where gas refills and gas bottle swaps are available as well as the prices (although the information on price isn’t always available).

Gas bottle refills and swaps prices vary greatly, as much as $5 – $15 in the same town so using Gas Finder can save you some money.

This is the second and last app available for download with a WikiCamps subscription. We regularly use this fuel app or fuel prices app to find where fuel is available and to compare petrol prices. This petrol app relies on users keeping prices up to date so isn’t always 100% correct but for the most part it is reliable.

The other feature we like and use is the log book. Each time you buy fuel enter the details into the app including the cost, litres and odometer and Fuel Map Australia will keep a track of your fuel expenses and usage.

When you’re out and about and need to use a toilet this toilet finder app is what you need. It’s very easy to use and there is a navigate feature which gives direction to the toilet of your choice.

542f035f34f47bf2de3e6cfac7dc722d

Offline Maps is the road trip app Australia you don’t use or think about until you need it. This is the app you can use when your phone navigator will not work because there is no internet available. We highly recommend having this app.

images 5

This is a basic app with only one purpose – to help you contact emergency services easily and quickly. The main benefit this app has for travellers over calling emergency services directly is that the app provides emergency services with accurate information on your location. I don’t know about you but most of the time when we are travelling if an emergency was to suddenly happen I would not know exactly where I was. This is the Emergency+ app you never want to use but could be very glad you have if there is an emergency.

Photography Apps

images

Drones are becoming increasingly popular and why not when the photos and video footage they can take are like nothing you can get with any other type of camera. Drones are fantastic but with them comes rules and regulations on when and where you can fly them. Open Sky is the app that provides this information; it will tell you where air space is restricted either permanently or temporarily such as during a bush fire or air search.

download

Pixlr is my choice and favourite app for easy photo editing. I have tried a few over the years and this is by far the best photo editor I have found; packed with features that are easy to navigate and use. Mostly I use it to crop, fix and resize photos to share on our blog and social media. Usually it takes just a few seconds to do each photo. It is also possible to create collages, add picture frames and more. Most features are free with this app with just some additional photo frames and stickers requiring payment. The other thing I really like about this add is there are very few ads.

Apps for Travel Entertainment

A podcast is an audio series that you can download and listen to on a device such as your smart phone. You can find podcast series covering just about every subject and topic you can think of. I find podcasts are a great way to pass time while on long drives between destinations, to learn about new things and just for something fun.

I use Podcast Player to for my podcasts. I like it because I can subscribe to and download podcast episodes without having to log in to an account. There are many other podcast apps to choice from, Spotify is one a lot of people already use for listening to music.

What is Geocaching? Geocaching is a treasure hunt and geocaches are containers hidden with a log book and sometimes objects or ‘treasures’ inside. Geocaches vary from micro to large and the treasures they contain also vary greatly from buttons to toys, stickers to rocks, foreign money to bottle tops. Some geocaches ask you to leave all the items, others encourage you take an item or to do a swap.

Geocaching

It is the hunt that makes geocaching fun and interesting. We also like that they are usually hidden by locals at places of interest in their community that are often not on the tourist trail. When you find a geocache can you use the app to record your finds.

SkyView Lite is a free stargazing app. Find stars, planets, constellations and more in the night sky anywhere in the world. This is a fun app and interesting to use when you’re camping under those amazing night skies seen away from cities and major towns.

Apps for Day to Day Travel Life

WattsApp is a great app for messaging, calling and sharing photos privately with family and friends. It is necessary to register using your regular mobile number to use this app.

While you are out on the road having the app on your phone for your bank will make it more convenient for you to do your banking than logging into your bank’s website. I know we use of our banking app at least a few times a week.

20200626 223715 0000

Our phone provider is Telstra so it is the Telstra app that we used. Your phone provider app should give you information about your account easily – bill amounts, internet usage, offers, payments and more.

20200626 224002 0000

Again, having your email service app on your phone is about easy access and keeping life simple. I don’t know about for others but we have as much correspondence as we can sent by email and not traditional post so having access to our email is necessary.

Wherever your travels around Australia takes you and for however long we wish you safe travels. Remember devices and travel apps Australia aid us but nothing beats getting out on the road, seeing new places, meeting new people and having great adventures. Go, make memories and live a good life.

There are some great tips here. It’s so important to be prepared and I didn’t even know you could get apps to find fuel and toilets (what a great idea)!

I didn’t know either until we hit the road then it was necessary to know!

I did not know about the toilet app either until day one or two travelling. Now i use it regularly!

Brilliant list! It’s great that apps make travelling so much easier these days. I love the idea of the Sky View Lite app, as I’ve never been able to work out the constellations.

Some constellations require a lot of imagination and the app helps definitely 🙂

Information packed post here! Tons of great advice for anyone planning an Australian trip.

Great list! I didn’t know there were apps for practical road trip needs like gas and toilet breaks, will be looking into this as its a great idea! Thank you

This is all so useful! I didn’t realise there were so many helpful apps available. I would LOVE to travel, Australia is somewhere that I have always wanted to see.

Thank you for all the useful apps, it will make the life so much easier when traveling around

Wow so many useful apps and so many for things I wouldn’t have even thought of! Great list!

Thanks. It wasn’t until we were on the road that we learnt which apps would be most useful.

What a brilliant list of apps to help you out and make your travelling easier. Something for everything isn’t there!

There sure is! There are endless numbers of apps available.

This is a great resource for a great road trip. I have to say I think our most used app would be the toilet finder. With 4 kids and 2 potty training (and me having a weak bladder due to those 4 kids) it’s a must! We also love geocaching. It’s such a great way to see places that you may not even think about.

Yes I can understand why the toilet finder app would be your most used lol.

Australia road trip planner: plan a perfect aussie road trip.

australian road trip planner app

Australia is one of the most beautiful continents on this planet. With an abundance of staggering places and versatility in wildlife, a tourist has all the opportunities to explore until they have their breath.

If you’re thinking about going on an adventure through the marvellous Aussie landscapes, seashores, and mountains, you need to be fully prepared and equipped for the challenge. We’re sharing six essential steps or pieces of advice on how to get ready for such an event. Follow up for an Australia road trip planner made from our experience.

1. Carefully choose where you’re headed

Australia has many opportunities for travellers and tourists. Whether it is one of the big cities, like Sydney, Melbourne, or the others, or some of the parts where wildlife dominates, like Tasmania, Kangaroo Island, the Great Barrier Reef, or the others, you can be sure that you’ll have a wonderful time.

Before going anywhere, though, you need to scrutinize the area and know what you can expect. Also, you need to know where you’re headed. If you don’t like diving and water, the Great Barrier Reef will surely not be for you. If you don’t like crowded cities, you might want to avoid them – pick the suitable adventure for you.

2. Mind the season and think if this is the best time for it

Once you decide where you want to go and what you want to see, you should check if it is the right time to do it. Some seasons are not the best to go to some places. It may be too hot or too cold in some areas.

Sydney has a perfect spot and can be visited throughout the year, but Melburn is best in summer and the hotter months. If you’re a non-Aussie reader, mind the difference between the northern and southern hemisphere seasons.

Tasmania is located in the deep south of the continent, and winters can be cold. Summer is the best season for going there. On the other hand, Queensland and the northern territories are very hot in the summer, and it is best to visit them during winter.

3. Plan every day and make sure you have the time for your plans

Perfect road trip planning means thinking about every day of it. You’ll want to make a schedule and plan every hour of the day. This is the only way to be sure that you’ll visit and enjoy everything on your list.

Australia is a vast continent and just travelling from one location to another takes a lot of time. If you want to explore everything and thoroughly visit all venues, you’ll probably need a couple of months. This is why it’s essential to give it more thoughts and make thorough plans.

4. Pick your transportation device

Going by plane and then taking a guide to get you through the most valuable places to see is one way to get around quickly, but it lacks comfort and enjoyment. Most people within Australia will choose their own vehicle. The best type is a UTE because you can store more items inside.

The UTE can go through all types of terrain and withhold any conditions. This is why it is considered the best option and most people are using it for their travels. If you see this as the best solution, store everything you want inside and enjoy the vacation.

5. Get the essential items for your plans

Before taking off, you need to be sure that you’re prepared for the occasion. If you’re going to Tasmania, where wildlife is outstanding, you need to take sprays against mosquitoes, sunscreen if it is too hot, and anti-venom solutions for any case.

If you’re going on a trip in the desert, you’ll want a knife, enough water, fire matches, and anti-venom from scorpions and snakes. Injuries do not happen often, but you need to be prepared and never risk anything.

6. Make sure you have cash

Always carry cash with you. You can’t be sure which parts accept cash, and you may find yourself in a situation where you need something urgently. Without cash, you may be left on the curb.

If you don’t like carrying a pile of dollar bills, you can plan stops in major cities and find ATMs where money will be accessible. Carefully plan how much you will spend and ensure you have enough for the entire trip. Always leave about 20% for emergencies because you never know what may happen on the road.

australian road trip planner app

These few points are enough for you to make a thorough plan and see some of the most beautiful parts of Australia. Before going anywhere, it’s crucial to make a thorough plan and be prepared. Surprises are great, but the best adventures happen when you have everything sorted out previously.

Great app with room for improvement

I love going on holidays and have been using this trip to plan them since 2013. It’d be great if the App could be updated with a landscape view and the ability to split screen on iPad. It would also be good if I could plot a flight/ferry between destinations so the distance isn’t added to the total.

Not helpful

This is the first App I have regretted purchasing. This App is not user friendly for multiple day trips.... you should be able to analyse segments of a complex road trip. Also I am using this from Australia and the conte t is very poor. No reviews of restaurants, hotels, etc. you are better off with Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Also, when I purchased the app it appeared that the only option was a 1 year subscription, but when managing my subscriptions in iTunes there is a monthly option. So I am out $50 when I could have tested it for a month at something like $10. Not happy.

Not bad but could be better

It’s cool to be able to map a trip. But is seems a needless duplication to date and also to manually sort entries. Entries should can be sorted by date and time. Trips are made up of geocoded entires linked to addresses as well as non geocoded notes and place holders and reminders. This stuff is easy to incorporate and important. Overall a good app but some low hanging fruit is still on the tree.
