Are you wondering where to travel with a baby?

Our youngest daughter, Avalee, was just 2.5 months old when we embarked on our very first trip with her. Our first trip with her took us to Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands.

After Indonesia, we ventured further afield to Australia and explored Perth and Sydney.

We then set off to Asia visiting Japan and Europe for a big extended road trip that included France, Switzerland, and Italy – all before Avalee had reached her first birthday! As seasoned family travelers (we have 3 children) we’ve learned a lot about what works best when traveling with babies in tow.

With input from other parents who have traveled with their babies too, we’ve compiled a list of the best places to travel with a baby along with practical tips based on our experiences on how to choose the perfect baby-friendly holiday destinations.

Just because you have a new baby doesn’t mean you have to be stuck at home. Now is a great time to make memories with your little one and travel the world!

It might not always be easy to travel with a baby, but in my opinion, it is always worth any challenges.

Here is a list of the best baby-friendly countries to visit to ensure your trip will run as smoothly as possible.

1. Tuscany, Italy

best cities in Europe Florence with Kids

For one of the best holiday destinations with a baby or even older kids, head to beautiful Italy!

Children are adored in this country, and you will find that Italians will often go out of their way to help parents. And expect them, to come to say hello to your little ones too.

Italy is one of the best places to go on holiday with a baby. It is easy to find some beautiful family-friendly accommodation options.

We chose Tuscany for our list because it has plenty of stroller-friendly destinations.

I recommend you choose either Florence or Lucca for a home base. Both cities are great for strollers, although we recommend a stroller with large cushioned wheels to handle bumpy or cobble-stone roads.

best places to visit in tuscany - Florence with kids

Florence has plenty of playgrounds for older babies and toddlers, and the restaurants typically can prepare a small plate for younger kids or a simple pasta dish (when Avie was a toddler, she often had simple pasta and butter).

If you decide on Florence, be sure to have a look at the best neighborhood to stay in Florence .

You can also find many beautiful small towns scattered through Tuscany that will allow you to explore this region of Italy without the masses of tourists.

Recommended attractions in Tuscany that you should see with your baby include the Leaning Tower of Pisa and The Boboli Gardens.

If time permits, you should also visit Capo Sant’Andrea on Elba Island (make sure to take baby beach shoes if you are planning to spend some time on the beach).

Personally speaking, Italy is arguably the best place to travel with baby options for us so far, as well as one of the best baby-friendly travel destinations and baby-friendly countries.

  • Bring your baby carrier along, as you will often find stairs at the main attractions in Italy.
  • Always have a baby change mat on hand, as change tables in public restrooms are rare.
  • You can rent a stroller in Italy, and check out sites such as TravelBaby. It and BabyGuest.com.
  • Pre-book your taxi online , that way, you can request a baby car seat for the transfer as well.

Where to Stay in Tuscany with a Baby:

We recommend basing yourselves in either Florence or Lucca (cheaper) and then planning your day trips from there.

Best Place to Stay in Florence with a Baby:

  • Best Hotel: For a fantastic stay I would choose  MyFlorenceHoliday Gold Bridge . Their family room includes a cot and high chair and has a kitchen area where you can prepare bottles etc. The hotel is located 100 meters from Ponte Vecchio.
  • Best VRBO: I love The Time Machine apartment which is located next to Palazzo Vecchio. It has 2 bedrooms and includes a travel crib, high chair, and dishes & utensils for kids- it also has a lift to the apartment which is on the second level.

Best Place to Stay in Lucca with a Baby:

  • Best Hotel: The 4-Star Hotel Ilaria has a triple room that includes a cot. This popular hotel is located in the historic centre of Lucca.

Wondering where to travel with a baby in Asia?  Japan is one of the best places to travel with an infant in Asia.

This destination is very baby-friendly. You can easily choose from some of these great destinations in Japan perfect for first-timers .

“ Baby Cafes ” located throughout Tokyo have childproof areas and food for mom and dad to purchase.

There are also family rooms throughout (mainly in the larger supermarkets) around, the larger cities where moms can nurse or change their babies.

Baby supplies are available from pharmacies, and let’s not forget how clean the country is (you won’t see rubbish anywhere!).

  • Bring your baby carrier along and leave your stroller at home.
  • You will typically find beautiful baby rooms in the larger supermarkets.
  • Public restrooms should have change tables and a parent-friendly toilet with a baby highchair, so you have somewhere to pop baby while you do your business.
  • Choose Airbnb over small hotel rooms.
  • For toddlers, we can highly recommend some popular theme parks such as Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan.

3. London, England

Westminster Bridge at sunset, London, UK

London is one of the best places to travel in Europe with a baby.

This city has parent rooms and changing facilities readily available, making it a great place to visit with a baby.

Many sights can easily be accessed by public transportation or on foot. We love how easy the city is to navigate with a stroller; simply use the   step-free Tube map to navigate the underground with your stroller.

Breastfeeding in public is accepted and considered perfectly normal. Children under five can travel for free on public transport, and there are plenty of family-friend restaurants.

If your bubs is a bit older, he/she might also really enjoy outings to a  baby disco, one of the children ‘s  theatres, the city farms, zoos, or a day out at one of the many parks.

  • Top 10 Things to do in London with Kids
  • Make sure you download NCT’s Babychange app, which will show you all the baby-changing facilities in your vicinity, and the Wowmum app, which lists baby change areas, as well as child-friendly activities, parks, and more.
  • Book your taxi online. Book Taxi London is a reliable website that you can use to quickly and easily book your taxi (you can even select to have a car seat for your little one)!

Bali with a baby

After one of the most affordable places to visit with your baby?

With rice paddies, waterfalls, beaches, and great people, Bali certainly has it all.

This dreamy vacation is very baby-friendly, and nannies or babysitters are super affordable.  You can also very easily rent baby gear and equipment for super low prices if you need them.

Hotels and resorts will be equipped with baby cots and high chairs, and with a bit of effort, you can also pre-book transfers with baby car seats.

Avoid Kuta and head to more family-friendly areas such as Canggu, Ubud, Legian, Jimbaran, or Nusa Lembongan.

We love to combine some time in Ubud to soak up the peaceful rice paddy atmosphere with some luxury and relaxation at one of the beachside areas such as Canggu or Jimbaran.

Bali might be the best place to travel with a baby for those living in Australia.

  • Bring your baby carrier along and leave your stroller behind
  • Always have a baby change mat on hand
  • Book a cheap nanny to tag along with you on your outings
  • Pre-book your transfers if you wish to have a baby car seat
  • Don’t forget to bring along your  sun tent for baby , as well as some handy and essential  beach items for baby

5. Tulum, Mexico

Wild Beach at Tulum - Riviera Maya in Mexico

One of the best travel destinations with a baby if you are after some beautiful beaches and warm weather. This city can make for a very relaxing vacation.

Many family-friendly beaches and hotels accommodate those traveling with babies, as they often provide cribs and strollers.

If you are wondering if it is safe to travel to Mexico with a baby, you will be glad to know that it is.

What you will need to consider is taking enough baby formula if you are not breastfeeding your little one as the variety of formula available is limited.

If you do use baby formula, make sure to use bottled water when making your baby’s milk.

If you do take a baby stroller, take one that can fold up and will fit easily into any taxi that you may take whilst on holiday.

If you are planning on venturing out and about, a baby carrier is a great choice as you will be hands-free, and is perfect for any hikes are strolls on the beach.

Top places to visit include Sian Ka’an Biosphere and Playa Paraiso.  Mexico offers some of the best baby-friendly travel destinations for those in the USA.

6. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago River

One of the best places to travel to with a baby in the United States is Chicago. This city is so baby friendly making it hands down one of the best cities to travel with a baby and one of the best travel destinations with baby options.

The great thing about Chicago is that it has a ton of baby sights, attractions, and tours to enjoy.

Taking your baby out and about during the day is great for you and the baby and in Chicago, they celebrate that.

The town of Chicago has free stroller tours at some of the area’s major museums, including The Field Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The Museum of Contemporary Art.

7. Montreal, Canada

immeubles à montreal

After stroller-friendly places to visit with a baby? One of the nice things about Montreal is that it’s very stroller-friendly.

Numerous kid-friendly festivals occur throughout the year. Popular attractions include Jean-Talon Farmer’s Market, Clock Tower Beach, and The Botanical Gardens.

If you visit Montreal outside of these festivals do not worry because there is still lots to do. Experience much of the cultural scene in Montreal by visiting many of the galleries and museums. Kids under 12 can go free to many of these local Montreal attractions.

In summer there are many parks and open green spaces that you can enjoy as a family. Enjoy a picnic and the many playgrounds that can be found in the parks.

Montreal boasts a large variety of baby-friendly and welcoming cafes and restaurants, so when it comes to enjoying a bite to eat, you and your baby can relax.

8. Tasmania, Australia

Tasmania with a Baby

Definitely, one of the most baby-friendly countries to visit.

Australia is another brilliant country to visit with a baby. While there are many baby-friendly places to travel to in Australia, we love Tasmania.

This Australian state is an excellent destination for children of all ages. You can easily find high chairs in restaurants, which typically have special kids’ menus to keep toddlers happy.

You can easily find all baby supplies in small or large grocery stores. Hotels have cots available (typically free of charge), and destinations are all stroller-friendly.

One of the nice things about Tasmania is that you don’t have to haul a stroller with you on your flight if you don’t want to because plenty of stroller rentals are available.

Many activities here are nature-based, including a visit to the Bay of Fires and Russell Falls. A great activity during the summer months is to head to one of the beautiful sandy beaches for some much-needed relaxation.

9. Wales, United Kingdom

View of Tenby Harbour, with Castle Hill.

Wales is another one of the best places to travel with a baby in Europe!  People love babies in Wales and will bend backward to ensure you enjoy your time here as much as possible.

Hotels will provide everything from cribs to baby gates and can even recommend babysitting services if you need some alone time. Good places to visit with your baby include Cardiff Castle, Tenby Harbour, and Bodnant Garden.

When you are out and about enjoying the lush Welsh countryside, be sure to take a baby carrier with you.

If you plan to spend more time exploring the Welsh villages and towns, a baby stroller will definitely come in handy. If you can, a stroller that folds up compactly is best as you are guaranteed it will be able to travel in your taxi.

10. San Diego, California

Mission Beach Boardwalk, Summer Sunset, San Diego, California

This is one of the most baby-friendly destinations on the list. There are a lot of boardwalks, walking trails, and plenty of beaches.

If you take a stroller with you when you travel to San Diego with a baby, you will be able to move around with ease.

If you are looking for some great baby-friendly activities then a visit to the Birch Aquarium, Mission Beach & Boardwalk, or the San Diego Botanic Garden are all great choices.

Be sure to also make your way to the San Diego Zoo. This huge zoo has so much to see and do and is a huge amount of fun for everyone.

If you visit during warmer months, be sure to pack sunblock and a swimming costume so you can take a dip at the many beaches.

Pack some kids’ beach toys or grab a set from one of the local shops on the boardwalk as all kids love to play in water and sand and most of all build sandcastles.

For kids big and small, head to Legoland which is under an hour’s drive from San Diego. The best part about the rides at Legoland resorts is that they do not have height restrictions so even the shortest of visitors can enjoy the rides when visiting.

(Waikiki Beach)

Is it any surprise that Hawaii happens to be one of the best places to vacation with a baby? This island is a dream vacation for many due to the many resorts that cater to families.

So it is probably no surprise that Hawaii happens to be one of the best places to vacation with a baby!

If you do not want to explore the island and just need to relax and take it easy, then staying at your beach resort is great as you can lunge around the pool or on the beach.

Head to the beach for some sand and fun and when baby is tired and ready for a nap, the room is only a short walk away. If you want to do an activity that is a bit more strenuous, many of the resorts do offer activities at the resort that you can enjoy.

The best way to get around this island is with a rental car. You will be able to see plenty of amazing sights that will allow you to take unforgettable pictures of yourself and your baby.

Exploring Hawaii by car also means that your baby can take a nap when traveling and not be tired to enjoy the sights.

Baby-friendly places include Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail and Valley of the Temples.

12. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town with a Baby

Not many people associate good places to travel with a baby, including South Africa. However, those who’ve been to Cape Town know it’s one of the best places to visit with a baby or even older kids.

Cape Town is also one of the best cities to visit with a baby because baby facilities are readily available everywhere.

There are plenty of picturesque views and things to do, visiting the penguins, heading out on a boat to see the seals, or having a picnic in a vineyard.

If you want to travel around Cape Town then make sure to rent a car. Many places that you will visit may be an hour or so drive out of the City center.

You do not need to take a car seat with you as many of the car rental companies will be able to offer you car seat rental.

Cape Town is known for its many wine farms. If you think that visiting is not great for kids, you will be pleased to know that many of the wine farms cater to all ages, with most offering children their own version of a “wine-tasting menu “with treats and kids’ drinks.

Nearly everywhere you visit a baby chair will be available to use. Most wine farms have play parks for kids to enjoy with swings, slides, and jungle gyms. If you are traveling with older kids.

Head to one of the many beaches, the most renowned being Camps Bay and enjoy a sunset picnic.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN - May 5, 2015 : Many people including tourist and believers come to Longshan Temple, Taiwan on May 5th, 2015. It is one of the oldest Traditional Temple in Taipei

Another popular destination for family travelers in Taiwan. This destination is very safe and the people of Taiwan are very welcoming of babies and children.

Many places in Taiwan have mothers’ rooms, similar to those found in Japan, but this city is a great place to travel with a baby because of its many attractions.

Unlike other places, you can easily strap a baby into a stroller and walk around, as the terrain isn’t tough to maneuver making it super easy to get around and explore.

This allows families to see a lot of exciting sights like Longshan Temple or Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.

The city of Taipei is exciting and colorful and at night looks a lot like Times Square in New York.

Head to the 101 Building which cannot be missed when you arrive in the city. You can go up this building and it is strongly recommended to buy tickets in advance rather than queuing.

Head out of the city and you will find the Silver Stream Cave which is a temple carved into the rock face behind a stunning waterfall. The nerve-wracking walk-up is definitely worth the trek and be sure to pack a baby carrier for this to make the walk easy.

Ecuador may not be the first place you think of when traveling a with baby however you will find that this country is very welcoming of children and is affordable for a family vacation.

Ecuador is one of the best places to visit in South America , so you can’t go wrong with this destination!

The safest way to get around Ecuador is by renting a vehicle. Although there is a lot of public transport like taxis and buses, seatbelts are not always readily available and the maneuvers that the drivers take along the winding roads are quite hair-raising!

When it comes to mealtimes and feeding, you will be pleased to know that breastfeeding is very acceptable and normal. If you need baby formula, this is readily available however you may not find your usual brand.

The terrain is challenging to get around with a stroller, so you will need to use a baby carrier instead. You can even take a backpack carrier as this will be the easiest way to get around and carry your baby.

It’s worth exploring the city as much as possible with your baby as there’s a lot to see. This includes The Otavalo Indigenous Market and the Manabi Coast.

scenic Rhodes island, Lindos bay. Greece

Wondering where to travel with your baby in Greece?

Those who visit Greece can tell pretty quickly that the culture is family-oriented. Often children can eat free at restaurants, stay free at hotels and ride public transportation for free.

While we recommend you leave the cliff-top towns such as Santorini for another year, you could visit many other beautiful destinations in Greece with your baby in tow.

There are many islands that you can visit in Greece offering you and your baby warm beaches to enjoy like the infamous Mykonos.

Another great place to visit in Greece is Crete and the great thing is that this is not the first place most people think of visiting in Greece.

This makes it a great destination as it is not crowded and Crete also has a range of activities to do with kids.

Greece is also a very safe place to visit so it is a definite for any family vacation. If you want to explore by walking, a stroller may be difficult to use so a baby carrier may be best. Or a stroller with larger wheels will be ok.

Make sure you and your baby visit the Plaka District of Athens and The Castles Of Rhodes.

How To Get Around

Of course, the best way to get around Rhodes is with the locals. Get your local Rhodes taxi here.

21. Cascais, Portugal

Cascais, Portugal

Cascais is a quaint village in Portugal full of culture, history, and, most importantly, families. The laid-back destination promises one of the best vacations with infants possible.

If you don’t choose to push your stroller on the wide, open streets, you can be comforted that child seats in taxis are not mandatory, making taxi cabs easily accessible.

There is a wide selection of parks, calm beaches, and historical sites to explore. One thing to remember is that the rich traditions in the seaside village mean that local restaurants don’t necessarily serve chicken nuggets and the like.

However, if your baby wants to venture from their formula, you can rest assured that the local food isn’t particularly spicy and generally quite soft.

How to Choose Infant-Friendly Holiday Destinations

Wondering how to choose the best place to travel with an infant? Find below some of our requirements when we decide where to travel next.

1. Is the Transportation Safe?

An important consideration when we choose holiday destinations with our baby is whether transportation will be safe for our little one.

Traveling with a baby in a train

For example, you might consider whether taxis and private transfers offer infant travel car seats.

If they don’t, it might be best if you rent a car and add a child car seat onto the rental costs, or you might prefer to bring your own – find a post on the best infant travel car seats to travel with here.

(However, it is essential to check if your car seat can be adequately secured in a different country as they all have different systems to install car seats).

How safe are these to use if you plan to take public transport? Some countries are crazy when it comes to driving.

Think about what you are comfortable with and choose the best vacation that ticks your boxes.

2. Is the Climate Baby-Friendly?

Look at the average temperatures and how much rain the destination will get at the time of year you plan to visit.

Meiji Shrine in Japan with a Baby

We made the mistake of traveling to Asia during their hot season, and our baby developed a heat rash from the constant heat; it made life more challenging than it needed to be as she was unhappy and pretty grumpy.

We also went to Japan when it was freezing, and it was tricky to keep our little baby warm and snug in the temperature.

3. Keep Travel Time Short

Keep flight time as short as you can. It is much easier to fly with a newborn who sleeps a lot, in comparison to a baby who has just become mobile.

It might be a good idea to pick infant-friendly travel destinations closer to home.

An 8-hour flight overseas might be okay, but a 15-hour long-haul flight will be much more challenging (If you are traveling long-haul, you might appreciate our long-haul flight checking list for babies ).

So while we list baby-friendly holidays from around the world in our list below, it will be essential to consider the ones closer to your home.

Also, think about how long your transfers are once you land, and keep your travel days nice and short so that there is plenty of downtime for your baby.

4. Which Countries Are Safe?

The best countries to travel to with a baby are the ones that are safe for little kids. Have a look to see if there is any unrest in the destination you will be visiting.

Look at which vaccines you might have to get (and whether your baby can even get them).

It might be best to avoid rural and remote areas of a country until your baby is a bit older.

We visited Bali when our daughter was only six weeks old, but we stayed clear of the monkey forests and spent a lot more time on hotel grounds than we would typically have done to keep the trip safe for her.

5. Consider Health Care

Think about the amenities and healthcare facilities you would typically be comfortable with at home.

Are there good hospitals, and will the medical staff be able to understand you?

6. Baby Facilities

Another thing that will make traveling with a baby easier is choosing a destination with baby facilities readily available.

Baby facilities in a hotel

Can you find hotels that have baby cots available? You might prefer to travel with a crib; you can find our top recommendations for a lightweight travel crib here.

Are high chairs available in restaurants, and are there baby change rooms?

If not, you can always travel with your own high chair – find a post on the best high chair for travel here.

You can also find a list of all our recommendations for baby travel gear to make your life easier while on holiday here.

Consider how easy it will be to purchase baby diapers, formulae, baby food, or baby medication.

If you have to travel with baby food, you can find a post about TSA baby food and formulae rules here.

Also, think about your baby’s age; the best places to travel with a newborn will not be the same as the best places to travel with a 1-year-old, because a 1-year-old is mobile.

If your baby is at the age where they are eating and drinking water, it is also essential to consider how safe the water and food are to eat in the country you are visiting.

Hopefully, all the tips above are helpful and will guide you to choose one of the best baby-friendly holiday destinations from our guide below.

Jolene’s Pro Tips for Traveling with an Infant

Traveling Japan with a Baby

  • Do it your way: People seem to think that if you go somewhere and you stay in your resort you are doing it wrong! But there is nothing wrong with a holiday with your baby where you do nothing but stay on the resort grounds.
  • Have plenty of time to rest: Everything needs to happen slower when you travel with a baby. Plan to have only half days of exploring and half a day to relax, plan to have relax days after big travel days.
  • Stay longer in one hotel: Our baby took a few days to adjust to a new hotel/crib. Which meant we had a few rough nights before she settled back into sleeping better. So we learned to stay in one spot for at least 5+ nights.
  • Beach vs City trips: We personally found it much easier to go on a beach vacation in comparison to exploring towns and cities in a country. Life moves slower on islands and so that is where we prefer to be with our baby.
  • What works for someone else might not work for you: Babies are all different, just because someone else had an incredible road trip holiday with their baby, does not mean your road trip will go smoothly. Our baby hated the car and the stroller, so road trips or days exploring all day long in a stroller were not fun for anyone!

Final Thoughts On The Best Places To Vacation With A Baby

So hopefully, if you have been wondering where to travel with an infant, you have made a list of the best holiday destinations with a baby you would love to visit.

The best destination with a baby will be different for each of us as it depends on your current location, as well as what sort of current baby ‘comforts’ you might be used to.

Most parents feel most comfortable when they choose destinations that offer the same level of baby care as the country where they live.

Kurashiki Japan with kids

Ultimately you can travel anywhere in the world with a baby; after all, babies are born in each country worldwide.

But the most comfortable holiday where you will be less stressed out will be the country that matches your current baby’s facilities, amenities, and healthcare standards.

And as a last resort, go with your gut instinct. If the destination doesn’t feel right, it might be best to leave it until your child is older.

Hi, totally understand where you are coming from, but we visited Bali, Lombok and Gili Islands with our 2-month-old baby and her normal vaccines that she needs to get anyways was sufficient to keep her safe. And that was on doctor’s advice. We have also just visited Vietnam (she is 2 now) and again her normal routine vaccines was enough for her to go. Always best to choose a destination that you are comfortable visiting though and make sure you pop into your travel doctor for advice as well.

I would add Reykjavik

Oh Great tip Ana! Can you tell me why you found it baby friendly? 🙂

I love this! You guys have had some pretty awesome places – all the pictures are simply beautiful. That has to be one of the most memorable, not many people get to say that they have accomplished that! Great Job! and one more question How difficult is it to travel with a 2 month old baby?

A 2-month-old is EASY 🙂 They sleep a lot, they fall asleep anywhere and when they cry you can breastfeed. The hard months arrive once a baby is mobile.

Very interesting article about traveling of the baby. The traveling helps a baby to grow their physical and mental health. Baby strollers and prams are essential things during travel. Thank you for your well-written article.

Thanks for your comment Donna. Do you have a favorite destination that you love visiting with your baby?

I love to travel with my baby. Very interesting & informative post. Just lovely. Thanks a lot for sharing.

We traveled with our 7 month old to Florence and Tuscany and had an amazing time. People are incredibly friendly and helpful. If you get an Airbnb be careful for stairs!

Hi Matt, we love Italy because Italians love our kids! 🙂 We are actually heading to Italy for a 13 week trip early in 2019 – so excited!! Great tip with the stairs, I think it is important to ask that question in all European countries.

Great article. Thanks for sharing this post about best places to travel with baby. It’s very informative and helpful.

Korea is also really great for young children. Lots of kids’ cafes, people love children, most people in the big cities speak at least some English, safe, clean and quite cheap (compared to Japan).

Autumn (September/October) is the best time to come, summer is too hot, winter is too cold and there is often dirty air in spring. The autumn leaves are beautiful and sky is usually blue. The best area to visit is Gangwondo, to the north east.

Thanks for all those wonderful tips 🙂

I would suggest Portugal as well. People there love babies. If you’re pregnant or have a baby you have priority anywhere, from the queue at the supermarket to being seated at a restaurant. The country is beautiful, especially if you don’t just stay in the hyper touristy places like Algarve. Alentejo has great beaches and skies that go on forever and the further up North you go the cheaper it is, with some great hidden gems for both culture and nature.

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing and for giving some info on why you found it to be perfect for babies! We have actually had a few recommendations of Portugal, so might have to add it to the list 🙂

Jolene thank you for your list, we waiting for our baby and looking forward to starting travel with our boy.

Glad you like the info. Hope you have a great time once you can travel again 🙂 All best.

Thank you for the comment. Much appreciated it!

Thank you for the comment

Hi! Great post! Where would you recommend to travel with a 6 month old in December (internationally)? We would like the weather to be around 70F if possible as we are traveling from Minnesota and crave warmer weather in the winter months. Thanks!

Best Places to Travel with Baby or Toddler - badge

Traveling with your baby or toddler can be a meaningful journey. Your little one, along with you, can enjoy a lot of firsts and make new memories. That said, the importance of finding a baby- or toddler-friendly place cannot be overstated!

Finding a US destination that is child-friendly—and suitable for the grown-ups, too—can be daunting for parents! The very thought of it can send parents canceling the entire plan, and for good reason.

The preparations can be overwhelming at times, especially for first-time parents. Some of the stress comes from the constant diaper changes and food preparation. And it’s not only about kid-friendly restaurants with high chairs either!

With some facilities in the United States (and in many other countries, for that matter) not exactly baby-friendly, the adventure trip can easily turn into an ordeal for you or your entire family. But we believe there’s a perfect place out there for you and your little bundle of joy, whether you’re up for a relaxing break or feeling a little more adventurous!

Ranking Methodology

In collating our list of the best places to travel with babies and toddlers, we considered these factor points:

  • Child safety comes first. Always! Creating and maintaining a safe environment should be every parent’s foremost concern when traveling with their little ones. A trip to any place in the US entails checking for the dos and don’ts. Is the place known for its superior security systems? Is there security everywhere so that you can approach a police officer, security personnel, or a person of authority when the need arises?
  • The place must provide an educational exploration for your child. Are the particular destinations designed to welcome the entire family and make it a visit to remember for the little one? Will it not be too distracting for your baby, who may be asleep most of the time and unable to explore as much just yet?
  • Kids must enjoy the place as much as they learn from everything it offers. Under your watchful eye, your toddler should be able to explore freely, even with restrictions and within limits. Give your little one a chance to satisfy their curiosity in the safest way possible.
  • The place should be friendly to parents, too. A facility that allows you to carry your essentials everywhere and offer designated areas for breastfeeding or changing diapers is a must-visit for every parent!

Are you ready to set your plans in motion? Our list of the ten best places in America to travel with a baby or toddler specifies the cities and their many must-go places:

Here’s a Tricky Must-do For Your Trip: Packing and Renting Baby Essentials

Attention, first-time travelers: nothing will ever prepare you for your first trip. Choosing the destination is only the start. You’ll have to book your flights, arrange your accommodation, and pack your essentials. Expect many unexpected detours and “I wish we had brought the..” moments. But that’s part of traveling with a baby.

Some parents may be unsure about what to pack . Overpacking is often a problem, so creating a list long before your scheduled trip makes sense. Start with the essentials such as diapers, baby wipes, and changing pads. Store breast milk or formula safely and bring along bibs and baby bottles. Pack your baby’s favorite toys and blanket, too.

If you’re planning on enjoying water activities, a sun hat and a kid-friendly sunscreen for some sun protection are recommended. Bring extras but be mindful of your storage space.

Some accessories such as baby car seats and strollers are important to bring along with you. Using a stroller is great for carrying your baby, especially for long walks. But truth be told, these essential baby items are bulky and can be challenging to carry, especially when air travel is involved.

To save you the inconvenience and high costs of bringing too many things, look for rental options in your chosen destination. It’s important to check if these items have met safety standards and aren’t missing any parts when renting. Only rent from reliable shops or your hotel for recommendations.

For parents, traveling with their baby and toddler can be intimidating. You want a good time for your little one and perhaps the entire family and yourself AND give your baby or toddler undivided attention at the same time.

Go ahead and choose your destination, pack the right essentials, and make important arrangements like renting a car seat or stroller. Importantly, consult with your pediatrician for clearance, especially during your baby’s first plane ride. Make that itinerary work in some of the country’s most baby-friendly places!

From strolls around Central Park, visiting multiple exhibits for kids, window shopping at Fao Schwarz, to even seeing the skyscrapers won’t disappoint.

You can take the kids to a Broadway show and eat food from literally any world cuisine. Plus, there are plenty of incredible family hotels for you to choose from.

5. Outer Banks, NC

Mother and toddler in matching straw hats on a sandy beach, a beautiful and baby-friendly travel destination in the US.

Seaside vacations are another classic family favorite for all ages , and the Outer Banks in North Carolina are no exception.

Aside from spending many hours playing with sand and bathing in the ocean, the area boasts several great family-friendly attractions such as the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island , H2OBX Water Park , Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge , and the fun playgrounds in  Elizabethan Gardens.

You can even take a dolphin tour or find beautiful wild horses at Carova Beach if you have a 4×4 and are up for a family adventure!

6. Charleston, SC

Full of history and culture with great weather and an easy-to-navigate center , Charleston is another great place to vacation with your baby or toddler if you are looking for somewhere a little more laid back while still having plenty to do.

The Charleston Museum should be at the top of your list. Aside from the megalodon jawbone on display in the Natural History Gallery, the Kidstory exhibit is always a hit as youngsters can get hands-on with an art project while learning about the city’s history. The Museum also provides great family programs specifically for toddlers!

If you’re looking for more toddler and baby-friendly attractions, make sure to check out the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry , the North Charleston Fire Museum , and the Dock Street Theatre.

7. White Mountains, New Hampshire

Wooden walkway passing through a stunning rocky gorge with a stream, a picturesque spot for family travel in the US.

With its quaint towns, picturesque viewpoints, and plenty of things to do , the White Mountains is the perfect getaway for anyone who likes a good amount of time in nature mixed with plenty of relaxation in a cozy holiday home.

The great thing about the White Mountains is that there are multiple scenic drives like the Kancamagus Highway which boasts countless viewpoints that allow you to simply step out of the car and admire your surroundings with minimal effort.

Don’t miss a trip to the top of Mount Washington via car or cog railway , visit the bears at Clark’s Trading Post , and the chance to eat at Polly’s Pancake Parlor for the best family trip possible!

8. Legoland

Family enjoying a boat ride with toddlers, exemplifying fun travel activities in the US for young children.

I think that Legoland is the best theme park for kids in Florida (yes, it’s more fun than Disney due to zero lines or having to constantly check the app to book your spot in lines) . There are actually 3 locations in the US ( California , Florida, and New York) so you can visit whichever one is most convenient for you.

Legoland is much quieter than Disney making for a more relaxed trip for the whole family. With short wait times and a smaller space, little ones are less likely to be overwhelmed, and as parents, you won’t have to stress about making it to reservations on time, it’s a win-win in my book!

Plus, I’ve found that most kids will love Legoland, even if they haven’t started playing with Legos themselves yet .

9. Glacier National Park, MT

For any outdoorsy families looking for an easy getaway with a huge payoff , the beautiful Glacier National Park is one of the best things to do in Montana with little ones.

There are plenty of easy hikes in Glacier National Park with extremely rewarding views and some walks that you can even do with your stroller . Plus, the Going-to-the-Sun Road which crosses directly through the middle of the park offers stunning viewpoints right on the side of the road . Expect to see super clear blue lakes, snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, and more.

Before you begin your trip, make sure to pick up a Junior Ranger Packet and National Park Passport Book at the visitor center. During your visit, you can collect stamps and fill out questions about what you see. The Junior Ranger Packet can be returned at the end and your kids will become official “Junior Rangers” earning a wooden badge for their efforts.

10. Oahu, Hawaii

Woman standing by a large skull in a lush green valley, a unique place to explore while traveling in the US with a baby.

Last but not least, Oahu is the most family-friendly island in Hawaii , boasting a huge range of activities both in the city and out in nature.

Topping the list of things to do with kids is probably the Kualoa Ranch . This popular movie set is complete with lifesize dinosaur bones and countless adventure tours for all ages. Travel to a secret island, explore the jungle , or join a boat tour to see all the different sites of this magical place.

Back in town, eat the best Shave Ice , try the flight simulators at Pearl Harbor , see the Sea Life Park and Honolulu Zoo , attend an authentic Hawaiian Luau , or visit the Polynesian Cultural Center to give your kids a little culture.

Traveling With a Baby in the US – All You Need to Know

Of all of the places in the world to travel, the US might be my favorite. I’m biased as an American, but there’s so much diversity here in terms of landscape, people, and food, you can find almost anything to suit your desires. As a new mom, I’ve loved traveling the USA with my baby, especially since there are so many baby-friendly things to do here.

Traveling with a baby comes with its own unique set of challenges, and knowing some of the important differences in the US and ways to prepare is key to having a safe and enjoyable trip. Here’s everything to know about traveling in the USA with a baby.

Navigating US airports with a baby

One thing you’ll notice when traveling in the USA is that airports don’t usually have a dedicated line for families with young children. It’s one of my biggest sources of shame when traveling in a US airport since so many other countries do! However, they do have family bathrooms, which can be a real lifesaver when you need a private space for diaper changes and feedings.

To breeze through the airport experience:

  • Arrive early. Give yourself plenty of time to check in, pass through security, and get to your gate. Babies have a way of making everything take longer than you expect.
  • Gate-check stroller and car seat. You can bring your stroller and car seat all the way to the gate, where they’ll be tagged and stowed under the plane. This is a convenient way to have them available until you board. You can also check a car seat to hold luggage for free. Just be sure to bring a car seat travel bag in order to keep the straps and buckles intact.
  • Security screening. The US tends to screen more than any other country I’ve traveled through. Let the agent know before you go through that you have liquids over the 3oz/100ml limit. You’re allowed to bring baby food, formula, and milk over the limit, but it will probably be subject to extra screening. They are not allowed to put anything into the liquid but may perform a vapor test or put it through an extra machine. Be prepared to fold up your stroller and send it through the X-ray machine as well. Keep in mind that you’ll need to carry your baby through the metal detector, even if it means waking them up from their stroller nap to do so.
  • Family bathrooms. Take advantage of the family bathrooms. They provide a private, clean space for diaper changes and feedings.

Traveling around the US with a baby: crafting the perfect itinerary

Now, let’s talk about planning your itinerary, which is crucial when you have a little one in tow. Here are some tips to help you create a well-balanced schedule.

  • Flexibility is key. Babies have their own schedules, and you need to be ready to adapt. Plan activities around their nap times and feedings and you’ll all be happier. Some babies are totally fine sleeping in a car seat, and others need dark rooms. You know your baby best.
  • Shorter stays. Instead of rushing through multiple destinations, consider spending more time in fewer places. This allows for a slower pace and more in-depth exploration.
  • Rest days. Incorporate rest days into your itinerary. Use this time to relax, explore your accommodation, and recharge for the next adventure.
  • Research family-friendly activities. Look for attractions that are well-suited for babies. Museums, parks, and gentle hikes are often great options.
  • Stay central. Choose accommodations that are central to the activities you plan to do. This minimizes travel time and makes it easier to return to your lodging for breaks.
  • Car rentals. The US is HUGE and in most places, you’ll need a car to get around. There are a few key US cities that are well connected with public transportation, but outside of those, almost everyone drives. This means you’ll need to bring (or rent) a car seat. I’ll mention some destinations below where you don’t need a car in case you’d prefer not to drive.

10 of the Best Places to Travel with a Baby in the USA

San diego, california.

Known for its perfect weather and stunning beaches, San Diego is a fantastic destination for families with babies. Explore Balboa Park, take a stroll in La Jolla Cove, or visit the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. This was one of the first trips we took my son on and is one of the most family-friendly cities in California!

Don’t miss our detailed guide to a 10-day California road trip!

Asheville, North Carolina

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville offers a laid-back, artsy vibe and a range of family-friendly activities. Don’t miss a visit to the Biltmore Estate and the family-friendly trails of the Great Smoky Mountains. If you visit in the fall, the foliage can be gorgeous.

Seattle, Washington

A haven for outdoor enthusiasts, I love Seattle as a jumping-off point for a Washington road trip with so many beautiful National Parks. You’ve got a great mix of mountains, rainforests, and lakes to choose from.

Check out our guide to the best hotels in Seattle.

Charleston, South Carolina

Steeped in history and charm, Charleston provides a relaxed atmosphere for families. Explore the cobblestone streets of the historic district and spend a day at the renowned Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry. If your baby is anything like mine, the sand at the beach will be one of their favorite things!

Sedona, Arizona

Red rock landscapes, hiking trails, and spiritual vibes await you in Sedona. I love that it’s such a great place to just rent a vacation home and relax at any time of year. Opt for baby-friendly hikes like the Bell Rock Pathway or relax at the Sedona Community Pool.

Chicago, Illinois

The Windy City is an excellent choice for families. Take your little one to Millennium Park, Navy Pier, or the Lincoln Park Zoo, where they can meet animals from all over the world. Keep in mind it can get COLD in the winter, so consider this for the spring or summer.

Image: Visiting US parks with a baby.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

An iconic destination for nature lovers, Yellowstone is perfect for introducing your baby to the great outdoors. Drive around the park and keep an eye out for bison, geysers, and accessible walkways. One of the best things about the US national park system is that they always have trails that are paved and accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital can be fun for both parents and little guys. Explore the National Mall, visit the Smithsonian museums (which are free!), and don’t forget to snap a family photo with the cherry blossoms if you happen to be visiting in the early spring. If you’re intimidated about driving while visiting the US, D.C. has a great metro system.

New York City, New York

Believe it or not, the Big Apple can be baby-friendly! Take leisurely strolls in Central Park, visit the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, and enjoy a family ferry ride to see the Statue of Liberty. New York is another city where you don’t have to drive.

Utah’s National Parks

We did a Utah road trip with my baby when he was about 8 months old and between the hiking backpack carrier and planning during low season, it was an easy, enjoyable trip that we could just do on the fly. Zion National Park had just received a blanket of fresh snow, and it was nothing short of magical.

Picking the right accommodation when traveling with a baby in the US

Hotels in the US can vary in price and amenities. If you’re traveling in the summertime, prices will be the highest as that’s when everyone else is traveling, too. If you can manage the off-season, booking will be easier, and prices will be lower.

Although hotel rooms are great if you want access to a refrigerator or kitchen, vacation home rentals can be a great idea.

When using a platform like Airbnb, you have the option to search only for places that have cribs. You can do the same on most major hotel booking platforms as well. Most major hotel chains have cribs, and there are resorts all over the US, particularly in Hawaii or Orlando, that are specifically designed for families.

Where to stock up on baby essentials in the USA

When traveling with a baby in the USA, thankfully it’s easy to find baby items .

Major cities have a plethora of options, such as Walmart, Target, and local grocery stores. You’ll find diapers, baby food, formula, and just about anything you could need or think of at these big box stores. If you forget anything at all, you can find toys, strollers , baby carriers , playpens, bottle warmers , and travel cribs at these stores. Rental services like Babyquip can also be great, which allows you to rent directly from local parents wherever you are in the US. It’s like the Airbnb of baby gear!

Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS are also great for baby needs and over-the-counter medications. Although grocery stores usually also have diapers and baby food, they don’t always have formula.

You may notice that baby formula and diapers in the US cost more than at home, depending on where you’re from. Consider bringing formula from home to avoid the high costs here.

Check out our guide to what to pack when traveling with kids.

Staying safe and healthy

The United States may be a land of adventure, but it’s also home to an expensive healthcare system. To ensure a safe and healthy trip, get travel insurance.

Consider purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers your family, including your baby. It’s a safety net just in case.

If you do need to visit the doctor while you’re here, your best bet is to look up urgent care facilities. You can also go to any hospital’s emergency room.

In the USA, dial 911 in case of an emergency. You’ll be able to use Google Maps to identify any hospitals or pediatricians if needed.

Make sure your baby’s vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling. Also, consult your pediatrician for any additional recommendations, and bring along any medications your baby might need. Pharmaceuticals, like our medical system, are most likely more expensive here than they are in your home country.

Keep in mind that theft can be a problem in some bigger cities in the US. I recommend leaving nothing of value in your rental car and always locking the door to your accommodation. Don’t walk around at night in big cities, unless you’re in a walkable city like New York, and be aware of wildlife while driving.

Final thoughts about traveling around the US with a baby

Traveling with a baby in the US is an experience that is truly one of a kind. There’s no other country where the arctic tundra of Alaska, tropical beaches of Hawaii , and skyscrapers of New York are all under one country code.

While it comes with its share of challenges in a country this vast, a well-prepared adventure can be smooth and rewarding. So, pack your bags, and explore this diverse and beautiful country with your little one. I will always cherish the photos and memories of our trips around the US with my little guy, and the best part is, it’s all only just beginning!

These Are America’s Top 10 Baby-Friendly Travel Destinations

profile picture of Wyndi Kappes

If you are a new parent looking to get away, the list of things to consider when planning your next family vacation can be lengthy. From how best to travel with baby to where to stay and what to do, toting around a little one on your next trip requires a little extra planning.

To aid new parents in deciding where to take their next post-baby vacay, airport parking service, Airport Parking Reservations , recently compiled a list of the top 10 baby-friendly destinations in the US . For the study researchers ranked each of the 50 states based on a variety of baby and family-friendly metrics.

These five baby-friendly metrics were considered:

  • Percentage of hotels with family-friendly rooms
  • Safety index
  • Average temperature
  • Average rainfall
  • Number of baby-friendly activities

Based on a combination of these metrics, each state was awarded a baby-friendly travel score out of 10.

With a score of 7.06, researchers found that Nevada was the most baby-friendly. Nevada’s plethora of family-friendly activities, fair climate and scenic landscapes earn it the top spot. Home of “the city that never sleeps” and a favorite among tourists of all ages, New York shares second place with Utah. Although weather and safety occasionally prove to be a challenge, New York boasts 1,768 baby-friendly activities, and 44 percent of hotels in the state offer family rooms. Utah, on the other hand, touts a high safety score and plenty of outdoor activities.

Overall the data pointed to 10 very different states as the best destinations to travel to with baby—from unexpected locales like Wyoming to popular spots like California.

UPDATED March 25, 2022 by Elise Mahoney

Top Baby-Friendly Vacations In The Us For Hassle-Free Vacations (And How To Plan One)

Preparing for a family vacation can be quite challenging, especially if it is one of those baby friendly vacations. You will need to consider many things, but the ones you need to focus on more are places where your toddler will be safe from harm’s way. It’s not an easy task finding these safe places for your baby. That is why we are here to make life easier for you. We will show you the places where you can both enjoy and be worry-free about your toddler. Let’s go.

Preparing for Baby Friendly Trip

1. the tripadvisor app is your saving grace..

The Tripadvisor App is your golden ticket to baby-friendly destinations in the US. Just download the app on the internet and get started searching for the tourist spots you have in mind. If you don’t know where to go, you can be thankful because the app can give you suggestions about the best places for your toddler. It will also give you information about the places you search so that you will know what its features are and if it really is a destination worth going to.

2. Early Planning is Better Than Late Planning

Planning early should always be prioritized when preparing for a vacation, especially one that involves your toddler. It is always good to plan early because a tourist spot might suddenly become unavailable, and the administration might close the said destination, so you still have the chance to adjust your plans if that happens.  Save those travel destinations and let the app do its thing.

3. Food is Essential

Wherever you may go, it is a good idea to prepare food in advance. Search for local restaurants in the area where you want to go and make a reservation. You’ll definitely make some adjustments to visit the best places to travel with a baby in the US , but that doesn’t mean you can’t go to the best places to travel with your little one.

Our family hit the road with our first baby just 8 weeks after he was born to attend a wedding of over 500. I won’t say it wasn’t a bit of an eye opener, but what in life isn’t after a baby is born?

baby friendly travel destinations usa

What I’m trying to say is it’s still possible as long as you choose the best places to travel with a baby. Here are a few ideas to help you scratch that travel itch even if you do have a new little bundle in tow.

Best Places To Travel With a Baby in The US

Check out these fantastic places where you can relax best with your little one.

baby friendly travel destinations usa

Rent A Cabin In The Smoky Mountains

Visiting the  Great Smoky Mountains National Park  and  renting a Cabin  in Gatlinburg is a perfect place to travel with a new baby .  Most  cabins in the Smoky Mountains  will have everything you need for caring for the baby, plenty of space for everyone to spread out, and a relaxing atmosphere for mom and dad.

The Cabin, itself, is  the vacation.

Consider the amenities you will have over that of a hotel.

Mom and Dad can set the baby crib or  pack-n-play  up in a separate bedroom for baby naps while they enjoy sipping wine or coffee on the large deck and taking in the beauty of the Smoky Mountains.

When the little one awakens, strap on your  baby hiking pack  and head out for fresh air and a hike in one of the nation's most beautiful National Parks.

In the evening after enjoying a steak dinner that you grill on your own deck and getting your little tyke down for the night, slip into the jetted hot tub and soak in the mountain air before your tiny human awakens for another feeding.

Then if, and only if, you insist on getting out of the cabin, nearby Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, offer numerous restaurants and activities to be enjoyed.

Rent a House in Florida

If a cabin in the mountains doesn’t suit your taste, how about a  house in Florida?  What could be better than relaxing by the pool in the sun with your new little one? Florida is definitely one of the  best places to travel with a baby in the US.

Our family spent three weeks on  Anna Maria Island  in the Spring and we did not want to return.

As with a cabin rental, a  Florida vacation home rental  provides the much needed space for mom, dad, and baby.

The most challenging thing about hotels when traveling with little kids who are still napping is that mom and dad feel they have nowhere to go when it’s time to nap. A home away from home in the sunshine state can be just the solution you are after.

Take A Baby On A Cruise To Anywhere

Another great place you can travel with a baby is on a cruise! Taking a cruise is one of the most exciting vacations for a family with a baby. Traveling with a baby can be stressful, but a cruise is such a carefree way to travel, with life on board made easier by unlimited baggage allowances, a fantastic selection of buffet and restaurant food, and lots of great places to relax and play.

Many cruise ships even offer a choice of freshly prepared or jarred baby food at no extra cost. Baby equipment such as strollers, baby baths, and sterilizers are often available to hire free of charge.

Aulani Disney Resort & Spa, Hawaii

Disney always makes it easy to travel with a baby, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, is one of the best Hawaiian resorts for babies because they have so many baby-friendly amenities. Just call the front desk and they can send up a pack ‘n play, diaper genie, bed rails, high chairs, or even outlet covers. And you can pick up additional diapers in their gift shop.

And while kids under the age of 3 cannot take advantage of the free kids club, they can still participate in many of the free programs. A favorite is Uncle’s Storytelling at the outdoor fire pit, where you can hear authentic Hawaiian legends as well as the story of Moana. And you can get the cutest photos of your baby with Disney characters like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Stitch, Moana, Pluto, and more!

Of course, one of the best parts about Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, is its amazing pool area. They have the Keiki Cove Splash Zone, the Menehune Bridge water play area, and the Waikolohe Stream where parents can float down the lazy river with their baby.

Finally, if you want a date night, Aulani can help arrange babysitting services. Why wouldn’t you want to head to  Aulani with a baby ?

Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, Ohio  is a great place to visit when you’ve got a baby in tow.

First off, Columbus is home to one of the best zoos in the United States. In addition to the excellent animal exhibits, the Columbus Zoo offers nursing stations and family bathrooms throughout the grounds. Strollers are also available to rent.

While you’re at the park, you can check out one of the many playgrounds and sculptures that little ones love to explore. If you need a break from the summer heat, pop into the aquarium to take in an underwater view. If you’re traveling with a toddler, check out Little Explorers’ Base Camps which are drop-in exploration stations that are available on select Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Even if your little one never leaves the stroller, the Columbus Zoo is a beautiful place for the whole family to walk around.

Another great spot to bring your baby to Columbus is  COSI [Center of Science and Industry].  This kids museum offers the Little Kidspace which is for babies through first graders (bigger kids aren’t even allowed). This area offers tons of hands-on activities, role play, and sensory experiences that will entertain your little one for hours.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is a great city to visit with a baby. There are so many baby-friendly things to do in Philadelphia.

In Philadelphia, you’ll find the oldest zoo in the country.  The Philadelphia Zoo  has more than just animal exhibits though. In fact, it’s full of science exploration activities. You can also immerse your baby in zoological wonder across the river at Adventure Aquarium in Camden. There’s a ferry from Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia for a fun and stimulating commute to the aquarium.

Philadelphia also has several interactive museums for children, including some that would entertain an older baby or toddler. Check out The Franklin Institute and The Academy of Natural Sciences. They are two interactive science museums with exhibits for all ages.  The Please Touch Museum  is another favorite for families with babies and toddlers to safely explore and learn. Just outside of Philadelphia you’ll also find Sesame Place, a great way to spend the day for any young family. Whatever you’re looking for – Philly is a wonderful city to travel to with your baby.

Consider purchasing the  Go Philadelphia All-Inclusive Pass with Hop On Hop Off Tour  which includes admission to the zoo and many other Philadelphia attractions.

Great Wolf Lodge, Anaheim, California

We already know that Disney is one of the best places to travel with a baby, but another great place in Anaheim, CA to visit with your baby is The  Great Wolf Lodge . This lodge is the perfect place to travel  with a baby  because the indoor waterpark is fun year-round and kids under 2 are free. Your little one can enjoy time in the dedicated child’s area with warm water and baby slides.

There are life jackets provided and several lifeguards keeping an eye on the kids. Safety is the number one concern and you can see it in how there is special attention dedicated to the child areas in the waterpark. You can spend a week or weekend in the hotel and have everything you need. Along with the waterpark, there are activities for kids although many are not geared towards babies.

If you are considering a trip to Anaheim, I’d recommend spending two or three days at The Great Wolf Lodge.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle, Washington is a fantastic destination for families looking to explore a new city with a baby. The high amount of rainfall makes Seattle a beautiful place to spend time in nature on a  hike  or at a local park. Spend the day visiting  Green Lake Park  and, if it’s summer, take the baby and enjoy the wading pools.

If mom or dad is into airplanes, consider a visit to the  Museum of Flight  or tour the  Boeing and Future of Flight Aviation Center . and definitely plan to spend a day at The  Woodland Park Zoo  where you can see over 300 animal species.

When you get hungry and thirsty, then head to  Peddler Brewing Company  where holding a baby gets you $1 off your pint. Visit the Travel Mad Mum for even more  fun things to do in Seattle, Washington.

The Best Resorts for Families with Infants and Toddlers

By Ashlea Halpern

resort ocean beach hotel

When my newborn son turned one month old, I got him a passport . By 10 weeks, he was approved for Global Entry . To say Julian comes from a travel-loving family is an understatement. Pre-pandemic, I was on the road about half the year for work and pleasure. Fantasizing about where I would take him first helped me power through late-night feeding sessions—until it occurred to me, Oh right, traveling with kids is hard. All that gear to schlep! All those dirty looks on planes! And how on earth was I supposed to soundproof a hotel room when he inevitably throws a temper tantrum at 2 a.m.?

Instead of allowing myself to be overwhelmed with real and manufactured anxieties, I decided to do my research. Many hotels that claim to be “family-friendly” focus on the five-and-up set, trumpeting their edutainment programming and kids’ clubs for kindergarteners to tweens. But what about families with younger children? There had to be resorts for families out there that could make traveling with an infant or toddler (slightly) less exhausting. Ones that minimize how much junk parents have to pack, and always make babies feel welcome—even when they’re having a meltdown. Surely they didn’t all have Disney , Beaches, or Great Wolf Lodge in the name, right?

What follows are 15 truly infant- and toddler-friendly picks across the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean. These properties go above and beyond for their littlest guests, while simultaneously offering plenty of vacation-worthy draws for weary parents.

Best baby-friendly vacation spots in the United States

Babies and traveling don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, traveling with an infant might even be easier than taking on older child on vacation. Infants, after all, sleep a lot, have a simple diet, and are portable. From beaches and mountains to more urban settings across the United States, you can find vacation rentals that will make you feel right at home—and make vacationing with baby a breeze.

Beachside vacation home rentals

For some, summer wouldn’t be summer without a trip to the beach. And you don’t have to give up sea, sand, and sun because of your baby. There are plenty of baby-friendly beach destinations on the country’s coasts. You might even find vacation homes with direct beach access, making it easier than ever to get your baby to experience the sand and the sea.

Seaside , Florida

Family-friendly beaches abound in the Sunshine State, with the better-known ones in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach. But with a baby, you might consider more tranquil waters on the Emerald Coast along the Gulf of Mexico in a town like Seaside. Best known as the filming location of The Truman Show starring Jim Carrey, it’s a picture-perfect resort community featuring pastel-colored houses with porches and white picket fences. You can find a weekly summer rental and forget about your car. Seaside, with its New Urbanist design, was built with pedestrians in mind. Take a stroll through town and enjoy the quaint shops along the beach, or get a meal from one of the gourmet food trucks in vintage Airstream trailers.

Outer Banks , North Carolina

Another place to travel with a baby are the  Outer Banks  in North Carolina, also known as OBX. Set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, these barrier islands and sand dunes span 200 miles, from the Northern Beaches to Hatteras Island. You can book a vacation home facing the ocean or the sound. The different towns offer something for everyone—from villages filled with restaurants, shopping and attractions, to more secluded, peaceful areas. Beach activities include building sand castles, flying kites, or lighting bonfires. You can also visit the site of the Wright Brothers’ 1903 flight at Kill Devil Hills, fish on Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, or tour one of the five OBX lighthouses. At the end of the day, you can relax in your vacation rental and take in a fiery sunset.

Vacation rentals in mountain resort towns

If a mountain setting is more to your liking, whether it be in the winter with views of snow-capped peaks or in the summer when green vegetation abounds, then you can head for the hills and enjoy one of your best vacations with your baby. You might book a cozy getaway cabin and take in the crisp mountain air.

Vail , Colorado

Baby-friendly may not be the first adjective that comes to mind when thinking of  Vail , but traveling to  Vail  with a baby doesn’t mean you have to give up the fresh powder and 1,500 acres of downhill slopes. Rent a cabin or vacation home as your pied-à-terre and take advantage of the ski resort’s childcare offerings. The family-friendly Lionshead neighborhood is close to the Eagle Bahn Gondola, which you can board with your baby for a scenic ride up the mountain. Other activities that make this a baby-friendly vacation destination include the Pirate Ship Park, the Imagination Station play space, and the  Vail  Farmers’ Market & Art Show.

Park City , Utah

Park City, Utah is a charming, small, baby-friendly mountain resort town. Adjacent to several ski areas known for their pristine slopes, it also offers modest to luxe vacation home rentals. Activities off the slopes include a scenic train ride on the Heber Valley Railroad, a 10,000-year-old geothermal spring at the Homestead Crater, and the summer version of the bobsled at Utah Olympic Park, built for the 2002 Winter Olympics. A free public transportation system makes it easy to go from your vacation rental to the art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques of Park City’s historic district.

Vacation homes in a cityscape

At first glance, cities can seem like they might not be ideal for babies—they can be noisy and hectic. But they also have lots to do, from museums to historical landmarks to urban parks. Wherever you go, you’ll create priceless memories, and a city might very well top your list of best vacations with your baby. Whether you end up in the nation’s capital or on the West Coast, you’ll find a vacation rental you can call home.

It’s never too early to expose your baby to the rich history of the nation’s capital. The sprawling, grassy National Mall is home to the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, and it’s flanked by Smithsonian museums, which are free. And don’t forget to take a peek at the White House, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court. You can find a vacation rental in different D.C. neighborhoods, including the charming historic Georgetown, the family-friendly Capitol Hill (sometimes dubbed “Stroller City”), or the lively Dupont Circle. Wherever your vacation home ends up, you’ll never be too far from a historical landmark.

San Francisco , California

On the other side of the country,  San Francisco  is another baby-friendly vacation destination. At the end of a peninsula surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and  San Francisco  Bay, it’s known for its hills, year-round fog, and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, along with cable cars and Victorian houses.  San Francisco  offers diverse neighborhoods, so you can book a vacation home rental in the one that suits you best—from the upscale Nob Hill, to the casual North Beach, or the tranquil Richmond District. There’s lots to do beyond your vacation home, including the bustling Chinatown, the famous Fisherman’s Wharf with the sea lions at Pier 39, and Lombard Street, known as the crookedest street in the world.

All-inclusive resort

baby friendly travel destinations usa

When you visit a baby-friendly all-inclusive resort , you don't have to stress over having enough cash, finding fun activities to keep your kid entertained or deciding where to eat every meal because it's all included in the cost of your vacation.

Many resorts even provide cribs, strollers and bottle warmers that you can borrow during your stay, so you can pack light and focus on carrying your baby instead of extra suitcases.

On top of being situated right on the beach (because what baby doesn't love to eat sand?), all-inclusive resorts have kids clubs, splash areas and playgrounds designed to keep your baby contently cooing until it's time to head home.

In addition to standard baby gear like a baby monitor and high chair, the resort offers a variety of natural homemade purees for babies. You can visit the kids club facilities with babies ages 0 to 2 to play with toys or swim in the kiddie pool, but you are required to stay with them at all times. Child care is only available for kids ages 3 and up.

What to bring

baby friendly travel destinations usa

Because the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping babies under 6 months of age out of direct sunlight, you'll want to pack items to protect them from the sun. Though most resorts provide beach chairs and umbrellas, you may also want to bring a few baby-specific beach items like a pop-up shade tent (they are great during nap time), a full-body swimsuit with SPF protection and a hat (that they probably won't keep on).

Baby-friendly hotel

baby friendly travel destinations usa

Most hotels don't go out of their way to accommodate families traveling with babies , but a select few have made it a priority to offer child care, welcome kits with baby amenities and spacious rooms that give babies the peace and quiet they need so that parents can have their own peace and quiet.

Loews Regency New York is located in New York City just two blocks from Central Park. The Loews Loves Families program (offered at multiple locations) hooks families up with a guide to area activities and dining options, as well as amenities like baby bathtubs, cribs, baby-proofing gear and even stuffed animals. The hotel has 58 suites, some with kitchenettes, that have the space, convenience and privacy you need when traveling with a baby.

Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya , 32 miles south of Cancun , has a top-notch complimentary kids club called Kimbo Kids Club, but until recently it was only available for kids ages 4 and up. With the introduction of Kimbo Baby — for kids ages 3 months to 4 years — even parents can steal a few hours for themselves while their baby is cared for by the resort's trained child care team. Rooms with terrace plunge pools give you and baby a private spot to splash in the shade.

City hotels especially can be noisy, which isn't much fun when you have an overtired baby on your hands . Pack a white noise machine to drown out the noise (pro tip: place the sound machine near the noise you are trying to drown out rather than near your baby). If you plan to spend some time at the hotel pool or on the beach, bring along a flotation device designed for babies. Many have detachable canopies for extra shade.

Your baby won't be tall enough for their first roller coaster for years, but there's still plenty of fun to be had at a theme park . And if you decide to take turns riding roller coasters without them, your baby will be none the wiser.

All kidding aside, theme parks have lots of perks for babies. They are noisy and colorful, which can keep babies occupied for a surprisingly long time (but if they don't like loud noises, you might want to pack some noise-canceling headphones).

Plus, everyone expects theme parks to be full of kids. If your baby has a meltdown or throws your popcorn bucket at a passerby, you'll be surrounded by other parents who have likely been in the same position and will probably brush it off.

We'd be remiss to leave Walt Disney World off a list of baby-friendly vacation spots. Even if you've been dozens of times, there's something magical about seeing it through your baby's eyes for the first time (when they are awake, at least). For maximum ease, stay at one of Disney's on-site hotels . They offer complimentary transportation to and from the parks and most have baby pools or splash pads available, as well. To preserve those precious first-visit memories, you can have an artist hand-cut your baby's silhouette portrait at Magic Kingdom or Disney Springs, or visit the Disney PhotoPass Studio at Disney Springs for a family portrait.

baby friendly travel destinations usa

Your baby probably still lacks the dexterity to build with Lego bricks, but that doesn't mean they are too young for Legoland California Resort . There are more than a dozen attractions with no height requirement, including sand pits where they can dig for dinosaur bones, a Duplo-themed interactive playground, a Coast Cruise boat ride and a Legoland Express train. There's also a convenient baby care center in the park where you can feed and change your baby in a cool, comfortable environment. An on-site hotel allows you to easily get back to your room for nap time or the inevitable change of clothes.

With so many theme parks on either the West Coast or in Central Florida, the temperatures can climb pretty high. Pack a fan designed to clip onto your stroller, sun protective clothing and some stylish baby sunglasses.

Mountain retreat

Where better to test out a baby's developing senses than surrounded by nature? They can smell the fresh mountain air, touch leaves and pinecones (and most likely taste them, as well), listen to birds chirping in the trees and experience nature's majesty.

While babies are discovering the world around them, parents can escape the daily routine in a peaceful, relaxing setting. Bonus points if you book accommodations large enough to bring the grandparents along for a bit of built-in babysitting.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole in Teton Village, Wyoming, is a luxury mountain lodge resort less than 30 minutes from Grand Teton National Park . Rooms are cozy with a fireplace and furnished balcony with mountain views. Residence-style rooms have up to five bedrooms for multigenerational vacations. During your visit, you can swim in the heated outdoor pool, ride an aerial tram to the top of Rendezvous Peak and, in the winter, embark on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow.

baby friendly travel destinations usa

Hyatt Place Keystone in Keystone, Colorado, is a great starting point for your mountain adventures, even if your adventures include nothing more than sitting in the hot tub (or near it if you are on baby duty) and taking in the mountain views. Breakfast and coffee — the preferred wake-up call of parents everywhere — are included with your stay. Opt for a suite over a standard room and you'll enjoy a separate bedroom where you can lay the baby down while you gaze into each other's eyes (or, more likely, at the TV).

If you are planning a wintertime visit, you'll need to pack certain items to keep your baby bundled safely. Not many things in the world are cuter than a baby in a snowsuit, but most snowsuits aren't safe to use in a car seat. Another option is to use a car seat or stroller cover that keeps your baby warm without the bulk.

Bottom line

Vacationing with a new baby can feel overwhelming, but if you know where to go and what to bring along, you can use it as an opportunity to rest, recharge and bond with your baby — all while creating lifelong memories.

Perfect places to travel with your baby

Taking your baby away for the first time is a big milestone and choosing the right destination is key to making the trip a success. Unless you are super adventurous you will probably want somewhere that is neither too hot nor too cold, has a pretty good healthcare infrastructure and a good range of relaxed activities with relatively little travel involved. To help, we’ve pulled together eight destinations for your infant’s bucket list. For general tips, have a look at our article on travelling with your baby .

Three kids walking away from the camera in a cobble-stone alley lined with potted plants; the kids are all wearing sunhats and two have backpacks

Mallorca, Spain

Partying in Magaluf probably won’t be on your agenda with a small baby but the north of the island has pretty market towns with promenades to push the stroller along, beautiful beaches for your bundle of joy to discover a love of sand and restaurants which really welcome babies. There’s also a fantastic foodie culture so you can take advantage of nap time and enjoy feeling like a grown adult again.

A woman in a sunhat, vest and shorts sits on a swing that hangs over the beach from a large leaning palm tree; to her right are tropical waters and above a vibrant blue sky dotted with puffy white clouds

Ko Samui, Thailand

A perennial favourite whatever stage in life you are at, Ko Samui ’s popularity may be a detractor for some but it does means that you can find pretty much everything you need for travelling with a baby: nappies, formula, restaurants with high chairs, a range of family-friendly accommodation options and so on. Spending time at the beach is an obvious choice with an infant but when you need a break the temples and gardens can be surprisingly good for little kids (offering shade and new things to look at). But the best reason to take your baby to Ko Samui is the warm Thai welcome you will get wherever you go.

Norfolk, England

The east of England is known for being flat, making it a very suitable place if you have a stroller and like to walk while your baby sleeps. Being a bit further away from London but still a relatively quick drive, Norfolk offers good value in terms of accommodation and dining costs, and it has a relaxed easy-going vibe and plenty to keep parents of the very young happy. Think sandy beaches, sweet coastal towns, National Trust properties , and if your little one has become a walking one then a trip to the magical Bewilderwood is a must.

Top cityscape view on the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore church and old town in Florence; the wide streets are perfect for strollers and travel with your baby

Tuscany, Italy

Like the Thais, Italians LOVE babies and believe us it’s so nice to be on holiday somewhere with a culture that embraces and adores your precious bundle. Toddling infants are welcomed at historical sites, and where better for that first lick of gelato or nibble of pizza. But why Tuscany particularly? With a babe in arms you can easily explore the museums and galleries of Florence and Pisa , the hilltop towns are perfect places to people watch with a coffee and a small person, and yes there are beaches if you want them. Stay on a working farm and enjoy watching your baby interact with animals too.

A thatched-roofed tropical bar sits beneath hulking palms on a beach at Cozumel island. The bar is painted bright yellow and red with green and white plastic chairs. It's partly obscured by green palm trees and sits on a white-sand beach with a jewel-blue sea in the background.

Quintana Roo, Mexico

Easily accessible with plenty of baby-friendly flight times and also pretty affordable due to the large number of options available, Quintana Roo is home to both  Cancún and Mexico’s Caribbean coast and welcomes families with open arms. There are baby-friendly beaches, plenty of family accommodation options (including all inclusive resorts with babysitting and all chores taken care of if you want to properly switch off) and opportunities for fun away from making sandcastles, exploring ruins or watching wildlife.

Sunshine Coast, Australia

With all the delights of Queensland packed into one easily-navigated area, the Sunshine Coast is a lovely place to take your baby. It’s warm without being too hot, there are loads of things to do whether you want to wander round markets, take the pram along a beachside path or hang out in the pool, and it has a reputation for some of the best family-friendly places to stay in Oz. For a treat, Noosa Heads is an upmarket town with a relaxed vibe, and easy access to the rainforest for walks with a baby in a carrier if you’ve had enough of the sand and sea.

Visitors riding the swan boats at the Boston Public Garden on a sunny summer day; in the background, behind the tree-lined waterway are a couple of glass skyscrapers poking up into a blue sky dotted with a few whispy white clouds; baby travel

Boston, USA

A city break might seem like an odd idea for new parents but while a baby still sleeps a lot there’s chance to visit that gallery or museum you’ve always wanted to, linger over a coffee as you people watch and even have dinner at adult’s dinner time and not 5pm. Boston is a great choice because it also offers plenty for the very little person, with lots of playgrounds to explore and fountains to frolic in as well as museums that specifically cater to the very small. Check out the Children’s Museum , the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium for starters. And then plan to bring your son or daughter back when they are school age too!

Campervan on road in Tongariro National Park, with volcanic peak (with its rocky summit cloaked in a petite cloud, in background). Free campsites and having all your baby's gear at hand in a campervan makes New Zealand a great destination for travel with your baby.

New Zealand (by camper van)

If New Zealand has always been on your travel wishlist, then maternity or paternity leave can be a great opportunity to do a longer trip and visit a part of the world you’ve always wanted to. While you have to be careful with the amount of time your baby spends in the car seat, hiring a camper van allows you to keep exploring without having to unpack all the baby paraphernalia all the time. The freedom of the open road combined with the buzz of exploring somewhere in your new family unit is the stuff family memories are made of. Your baby might not remember the details as they get older but the fact you did it will always be part of their travel history. And as it's New Zealand, free camping is also an option .

The Top 10 Absolute Best Places to Travel with a Baby

Alright baby jetsetters, are you ready for your parents to take you on the adventure of your lifetime? Lucky you! These are the absolute BEST destinations to travel with a baby (or toddler) around the world , tried and true by our little family! So whether you want to stay close to home, or jet-set a little further away, these are the best destinations with a baby , and the best time of year to travel to them!

baby friendly travel destinations usa

What are the best places to travel with a baby?

Portugal is an exceptional destination to travel with a baby! The Portuguese are extremely baby-friendly, and when we went with our baby we were surprised to learn quickly that you will be encouraged to skip EVERY line if you have a baby (like, rushed to the front! even at Starbucks!) it’s such a nice community in Portugal , and we felt SO welcome everywhere with a little one. I recommend flying into Porto and heading to Douro Valley (wine country!) and maybe rent a villa on the coast in Comporta if you are down for a little road trip with your little one!

baby friendly travel destinations usa

When we went to the   Six Senses Douro Valley  with our little one at just three months old, I asked if the hotel had a crib, they replied that they have absolutely everything we need for the baby, and that we should ‘bring nothing’. They also had wonderful in-room childcare available at 20 euros per hour, which we used and loved!

Where to stay in Portugal with a baby

We loved this hotel in Porto with a baby, then we headed to Six Senses Douro Valley which was exceptional with a baby, and I also recommend renting a villa in the cute, low-key surfside town of Comporta, a great family-friendly Portugal destination.

Tokyo, Japan

Japan is one of the most baby-friendly travel destinations in the world. The culture is exceptionally clean, organized, and beautiful!!! It’s an amazing trip to do as a family, and they’re SO friendly toward babies and toddlers.

baby friendly travel destinations usa

We did a trip to Tokyo with our baby boy at 16 months old, but I think it would have been a good vacation spot for babies of any age! Check out our Tokyo itinerary with a toddler here.

Why is Tokyo a good travel destination with a baby

The culture in Japan is extremely baby-friendly, the public transit is easy (and stroller friendly!), or the entire city is walkable as well if you want to get your steps (and stroller naps) in! We found it to be a great destination for our baby boy, and there are lots of parks to walk to, too! For babies that have turned into toddlers, Tokyo is an exceptional toddler travel destination for its exciting interactive museums, kid-friendly attractions, and Tokyo’s Disneyland!

The best time of year to visit Japan with a baby

The best time of year to visit Japan is April-May or September-October, when temperatures are mild, there isn’t much rain, and skies are generally clear and sunny!  Any time of year is beautiful in Japan, but my favorite season to visit is cherry blossom season (April/May) or fall in Japan! We did Tokyo in October and the weather was absolutely gorgeous.

If you’re looking to get away as a family somewhere tropical and want an easy trip full of relaxation (much-needed in that first year, especially!!!!), Mexico is a perfect choice for your family vacation with a baby! We’ve been to Mexico a few times with our son Harrison and each time is so amazing. He loves it, and the hotels in Mexico are so good and accommodating with kids and babies!

Where to stay in Mexico with a baby

The rosewood mayakoba.

If you’re looking for a luxury resort in Mexico that will blow your expectations out of the water, and is EXCEPTIONALLY baby and kid friendly, but super luxe at the same time, it’s the Rosewood Mayakoba . We headed here when my son was just 3 months old as our first international trip with a baby, and I couldn’t be happier we did. The service at this resort is next-level, when we arrived our room was stocked with a bottle warmer, baby bath tub, sterilizers and more. They have everything you need!!! And their service goes above and beyond to be sure to give your family the vacation you deserve. They also have super-talented on-site nannies available, which we loved using!

Make sure you take some time to yourselves to go to the Sense spa, which sits on its own private island overlooking beautiful, lush, limestone lagoons!

BTW, for free breakfast for two at the Rosewood, a $125 resort credit, and a room upgrade (if available), fill out this contact form and be sure to use the referral code “JETSETCHRISTINA” if you use my referral, my agency partner will reach out with more information and can help book you with all kinds of fun perks (at no extra cost to you, and they don’t charge a fee to book!)

The Waldorf Astoria Pedregal Los Cabos

The Waldorf Astoria Pedregal Los Cabos is a jaw-droppingly-beautiful hotel nestled between the Pacific Ocean and Cabo’s majestic cliffs, in the prestigious gated resort community of Pedregal. This resort is amazing, and we love it here so much (we also babymooned here !)

And ALL the rooms at the Waldorf have an in-room plunge pool?! Which is so ideal if you’re traveling with little ones like we were with my 9-month old baby boy. He loooooved the private pool, which was always a balmy 85-90 degrees (perfect for babies!).

baby friendly travel destinations usa

For families and multi-generational groups looking for a Mexico all-inclusive resort that’s good with families , I’d always recommend choosing Finest Playa Mujeres! I loved this hotel and it is the only all-inclusive luxury family friendly resort in greater Cancun , and the only one of the three resorts that isn’t adults-only!

It’s easy to see why young families are drawn to Finest – not only do they have the most expansive and beautiful kids club I’ve ever seen (waterslides, movies, round-the-clock activities, full-time nannies at no additional cost (!!!!!!!) & the option to stay with your kids if you want to!), but the family-friendly atmosphere throughout the resort is one that will make every family want to come back year after year.

Napa Valley

Now I know what you’re thinking – Napa with a baby!? But when you think about it, wine countries around the world are famed for their relaxing slow pace of life, delicious food, amazing hotels, and, of course, wine to keep the parents happy! And after 9 months without drinking wine, don’t you think you deserve a little wine tasting getaway!? I think California wine country is such a fun trip with a baby. (and I have all the best wineries that accept kids in Napa on this list here )

Where to Stay With a Baby in Napa Valley

Montage Healdsburg – For a luxurious baby-friendly stay in the valley, check out one of wine country’s newest properties, the Montage. We stayed here with my 3-month-old baby and it was just perfect. With 2 gorgeous pools surrounded by vineyard views, and modern, sophisticated, refined rooms overlooking the vines, it’s hard to beat a stay here. I also LOVED the restaurant – Hazel Hill. If you’re looking for the ultimate luxurious place to stay in California wine country, this is your spot.

The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa is another great spot with kids or a family. Super spacious rooms, a great pool, and all of the family-friendly activities in Sonoma that your heart desires!

The best time of year to visit Napa Valley:

Napa is beautiful no matter the season. With a baby, I would recommend Fall with harvest going on, or spring!

Sedona, Arizona

baby friendly travel destinations usa

The absolutely stunning red rock formations in Sedona is easily one of the most stunning travel destinations in the USA . Many people believe that this region has a number of natural vortexes that radiate the earth’s energy, making it an ideal hub for all sorts of spiritual practices, alternative medicines, crystal healing and more! And making it an ideal getaway destination in the USA for people looking to come back rejuvenated, re-centered, and refreshed.

Where to stay with a baby in Sedona

Enchantment Resort – We stayed at Enchantment Resort with our baby boy and loved it so much! Read my full review of Enchantment Resort Sedona here. We loved how easy the hiking trails were to access – we didn’t even have to get in the car!

baby friendly travel destinations usa

The best time to visit Sedona

Spring in Sedona is the most popular, and thus most expensive (and crowded) time to visit—you will find great (but not too hot) weather, making for beautiful hiking (and stargazing!) conditions. I do not recommend summer with a baby (it will be much too hot!!!)

Fall is similar to Spring in that it’s pretty popular – but the weather is a little more prone to clouds and rain. And winter is typically the least crowded and least expensive time to visit Sedona, and weather can be anywhere from the 30s to the mid 60s, and can even snow or rain! But, you can also get beautiful sunny-but-chilly skies, which is what we got when we went in the winter I was SO happy to visit in the winter, and found it to be a great time to visit Sedona, as long as there’s no snowstorm!

Switzerland

Switzerland is known for its pristine natural beauty, delicious food (fondue!! chocolate!!), and absolutely stunning mountain landscapes. With its beautiful thriving cities, picturesque storybook-like villages, and many outdoor activities for every time of year, Switzerland is a perfect destination for family vacations with kids and a great travel destination with a baby of any age. What makes Switzerland a good travel destination with a baby

Switzerland is very safe and babies and children always feel welcome. There are great facilities for children everywhere, and there are many activities and attractions that both kids and adults can enjoy together.

When to visit Switzerland with a baby

The best time to visit Switzerland with kids is summer, from June to August. The weather is great, and you can take advantage of all of the outdoor activities Switzerland has to offer as a family. From hiking the stunning landscapes, to swimming in the lakes, the options are endless! If you want to avoid crowds, consider traveling in the shoulder season (September!).

The Maldives

Okay so this one is a further flight (for most of us from the USA, but the lucky Europeans and Asians have a direct flight there!!), but the Maldives with a baby is an unbelievably dreamy bucket list family trip, and it’s such a great luxury baby-friendly destination !

baby friendly travel destinations usa

It’s impossible to beat the relaxing, slow, luxurious pace of life on a small island, biking around, stargazing at night at the stars, and experiencing beautiful the most beautiful place in the world together as a family. Visiting the Maldives with a baby is more than a vacation, it’s a relaxing lifestyle you’ll find yourself rejuvenated from and will want to come back to year after year.

The best places to stay with a baby in the Maldives?

One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives – With the One&Only’s gorgeous family villas with pools, its amazing kids club KidsOnly, and its absolutely incredible island, that is accessible by boat from Male (so you don’t need to hop on yet another flight with your little ones!), One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives is one of my top choices for families in the Maldives.

Or choose Six Senses Laamu , one of the best resorts in the Maldives , and one of my very favorites! I’m always blown away at how kid-friendly and baby-friendly they are there, with everything from octopus pancakes for the kids, to the children’s club The Den, to in-villa babysitting, toys, baby chairs and hammocks readily available, even little ones have big adventures at this family-friendly resort in the Maldives.

The best time of year to visit the Maldives

The driest season runs from November-May in the Maldives, so I’d recommend traveling to the Maldives one of those months.

Charleston is super baby and kid-friendly and makes for a perfect getaway with family (or a multi-generational getaway, or a friend trip with a couple families!). With the best food scene in the US (you can read up on my Foodie Guide to Charleston here), gorgeous colonial architecture, the nearby beaches, and of course, the quintessential Southern hospitality, there’s nowhere quite like this charming Southern city.

Where to stay in Charleston with a baby

If you’re looking for a hotel, The Hotel Bennett is a great choice. Or check out Zero George for relaxed luxury, or Charleston Place if you want to be in the heart of the action, and look into Kiawah Island if you’re looking for a quiet more remote luxury getaway outside of town, or Wild Dunes for a more happening fun family-friendly resort on the beach.

I recommend May and June or September and October for visiting Charleston with a baby! This way, you’ll have beautiful weather but without the high humidity heat that the summers in Charleston bring.

The Caribbean

St. Martin in the Caribbean is a great choice with a baby for the calm beaches, nice water, and family-friendly atmosphere. The Belmond La Samanna is the nicest resort on St. Martin. It was built to feel like Greece, but in the tropics, and is characterized by stunning white stucco Mediterranean architecture decorated by lush tropical foliage, colorful details, and bouganvillea that makes you feel like you’re somewhere between Italy and Greece. Belmond La Samanna is an exclusive luxury resort secluded on the absolutely stunning beach of Baie Longue. Belmond never misses, but this is one of my favorite hotels. There are 83 beautifully-decorated ocean-view guest rooms, suites, and multi-bedroom villas, and all of the facilities here are colorful, chic, tropical, and make for an absolutely perfect Caribbean vacation.

We stayed at The Belmond La Samanna and we highly recommend it. It was great for a family with a baby!

What Makes St. Martin baby-friendly?

Yes! St. Martin is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the Caribbean, and a great spot for little ones due to its calm beaches, soft sand, kid-friendly restaurant scene, and warm weather. We had the best time traveling to St. Martin with our baby – who was 11 months old at the time. The hotel ( Belmond La Samanna ) felt extremely safe and easy to navigate with a baby!

Anguilla, located nextdoor to St. Martin is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean. I highly recommend Belmond Cap Juluca for a family-friendly luxury resort. We went for our babymoon in Anguilla and absolutely LOVED it. We both said we couldn’t wait to come back with our baby because the beach here is so baby friendly!

Belmond Cap Juluca

This dreamy Caribbean resort features white-washed Spanish style architecture set against bright blue water – giving alllll the Mediterranean energy. Each room here comes with two serene beach lounge chairs on the white-sand beach reserved just for you. And with four on-site dining options, this hotel focuses on quality local ingredients, most of which they source from their own greenhouses. This is a great luxury resort for those with little ones!

Frangipani Beach Resort is a great resort hosting just 19 rooms and one four-bedroom villa – but don’t let its size fool you! This resort has amazing hospitality, and features like a fitness center, bike rentals, a spa, water sports, boat tours, and a popular beachfront restaurant called Straw Hat . It’s also located on dreamy Mead’s Bay (the same beach as the Auberge Malliouhana !), which is arguably the best area to stay on the island. Let Frangipani know that Jetset Christina sent you!

The islands of Hawaii are a perfect destination for families with a baby. I grew up traveling to Hawaii as a little girl (at least once a year!) and I have the BEST memories of Hawaii with my family. Now, traveling as a mother with my own baby, I truly think there’s no vacation like Hawaii when it comes to traveling with a baby or toddler.

On Maui, we love the Four Seasons Maui and it is similarly super baby-friendly!

The Four Seasons Maui caters to those families wanting impeccable service, understated elegance, and delicious dining on the most beautiful stretch of Maui, and as such has long been a favorite Hawaiian getaway for celebrities, actors, singers and athletes. Almost every A-lister has stayed here!

The Big Island

Four Seasons Hualalai is an ideal destination in Hawaii for a family with a baby (we have stayed here in the past and it is absolutely dreamy !!). Here, you can request anything and everything to make your stay more comfortable, from a crib, playpen, diapers, wipes, a white noise machine, a bottle warmer, “little swimmers” diapers for the beach/pool, a nursing pillow, and a high chair! This is an incredible convenience because it means less packing/stressing for you when traveling with a baby!

Palm beach, fl.

We recently did a trip to the Four Seasons Palm Beach in Florida as a family and had the best time. If you’re looking for a quick USA sunny getaway, this is a great spot. There’s a cal beach and a big family pool, as well as a toddler room with tons of toys. This hotel had everything figured out for babies (and their parents) and the crib was extremely comfortable for our son (he slept perfectly all of the nights, which he doesn’t usually do at home!) and they even had a white noise machine, a diaper pail, and pouches and a stuffed dog ready for him in the room when we checked in! He was in heaven!!!! If you’re looking for a luxury family vacation without leaving the US, with good food, a good beach, and nice weather year round, definitely check into the Four Seasons Palm Beach.

Baby Friendly Vacations: Top 15 Destinations for Vacations with Babies

baby friendly travel destinations usa

It’s no secret that traveling with young children can be a challenge and to have successful baby friendly vacations, you must choose wisely and plan. But it’s also an immensely rewarding experience, and with a little bit of preparation, it can be a lot easier than you think.

Where you go and what you do will depend on the kids ages. As kids get older, the requirements change – but one thing remains the same: you want to find a destination that’s both fun and child-friendly.

Baby travel doesn’t involve rushing to visit all the monuments and museums on your to-do list. Rather, it involves embracing the nap time and downtime that your baby requires. You might even get a chance to relax yourself!

Be prepared for unexpected needs, such as feeding or changing, and don’t hesitate to sing or dance to keep your baby entertained in public places.

In fact, children under two are often the easiest to travel with, as they don’t require a lot of activities to keep them entertained. But even if you’re traveling with an infant, it’s still important to choose a destination that has plenty of things for you to do as well.

Here are some tips for making your next family vacations with baby a success.

1. Plan ahead. The more you can plan in advance with young kids, the better. This includes everything from making sure you have the right travel documents to having a list of baby-friendly activities and attractions at your destination.

2. Pack smart. Traveling with a baby or toddler or young kid means you’ll need to pack a few extra things, like diapers, wipes, and clothes. But it’s important not to overpack – you don’t want to be lugging around a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

3. Be flexible. Things will inevitably go wrong when you’re traveling with a baby. Flights will be delayed, plans will change, and tantrums will happen. The key is to roll with the punches and stay flexible.

4. Pick the right destination for your vacation with your baby . Not all destinations are equally baby-friendly. When choosing a vacation spot, consider factors like the climate (babies tend to do better in warm weather), whether there are family fun activities that appeal to both adults and children, and how easy it is to get around.

Some activities that babies and small children may enjoy on vacation:

  • seeing baby animals – maybe at a zoo
  • family picnic
  • visiting nature in a national park
  • a swimming pool
  • multigenerational vacations – bonus when nana can babysit
  • theme parks
  • beaches with calm waters
  • splash parks
  • museums with kid friendly exhibits
  • outdoor concerts and festivals
  • Stroller rolled boardwalks

Taking pictures of your baby’s first vacation adventure is a great way to capture memories. Whatever you end up doing be sure to take lots of pictures, get creative with props and backgrounds, and above all else have fun!

Have a newborn in the family? Don’t turn in your passport quite yet. Millennial parents are traveling with gusto with their littles, and not just to grandma’s house. According to research firm D.K. Shifflet & Associates, 62% of new American parents have taken an international trip with kiddos under five. These nine family-friendly destinations have already figured out this little secret: babies make great travel companions—as long as you have enough diapers.

San Antonio, Texas

The Alamo City has long been known for its family-friendly draws, from its excellent zoo and charming children’s train to the state-of-the-art DoSeum , where some of the hands-on, sensory exhibits are designed with infants in mind. Stay in the Pearl Brewery District (where a historic brew complex has been converted into an urban barrio), where chef-owned restaurants, boutiques, and even a popular splash pad are all within walking distance. The Pearl’s crown jewel is Hotel Emma , which takes care of its littlest guests with cribs and Netherlands-based Naif baby products. While the property’s Sternewirth Tavern is sophisticated, former brew tanks converted into seating nooks are ideal spots for parents to tuck away for a cocktail with a baby in tow. Outside of town, JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa feels like a world of its own thanks to its 1,002 guest quarters—many of which have multi-room layouts, ideal for families—restaurants, and golf courses spread out over 600 acres. Babes can splash around with mom in the water park’s young children’s pool (only two feet deep) and retire to shaded cabanas, where fridges keep baby bottles cool.

Lincoln memorial in Washington DC

Washington, D.C.

Whether you’re introducing your half pints to capital sights or exploring the city’s leafy neighborhoods, Washington is an easy getaway with a baby. The D.C. Metro links the city’s downtown and is clean and easy to navigate, not to mention there are miles of hike and bike trails along the Potomac River that make for lovely afternoon strolls with napping tikes. The Willard InterContinental Washington , which welcomes nearly 12,000 children every year, has a dedicated kids concierge who contacts families before arrival to ensure guest rooms (some of the largest in the city) are equipped with the things you need most, from microwaves for warming bottles to extra diapers and pails. While Georgetown Suites is less hands-on, all of its rooms come with kitchens and bathtubs, both of which are mighty handy when traveling with babies. High chairs and cribs are also available. Visit the Georgetown Waterfront Park, where you can feed ducks and splash in a sprinkler-like fountain, before grabbing a stylish souvenir—a little cashmere sweater, perhaps, or a plush baby pea coat—at Le Birdies Boutique .

Aerial view of Franklyn D. Resort & Spa

This Caribbean island, which has direct flights from dozens of U.S. cities, has several resorts that keep families with tiny first-timers in mind. Take the Franklyn D. Resort & Spa , located on the island’s northern coastline, which not only has a kids club for toddlers but also complimentary nanny services . These childcare experts—all of which are CPR trained—greet families upon arrival, lend an extra hand at the beach and pool, and take care of babies and kids while moms and dads go snorkeling or play golf (you know, take a vacation of their own). The property’s 78 one- to three-bedroom suites also have separate living and dining areas as well as balconies or garden terraces. Further west, you’ll find Round Hill Hotel and Villas , a storied 110-acre resort where your baby will join a list of past guests that includes Paul McCartney and Ralph Lauren. Guests can book a fully staffed villa or one of 36 hotel guest rooms; family specialists reach out to ensure your family needs (cribs, high chairs, nanny and babysitting services) are met—and likely exceeded.  Along with pools and tennis courts, the property has a lush, tree-lined beach.

Santa Marta Lighthouse in Cascais, Portugal

Cascais, Portugal

Yes, the Iberian Peninsula is farther flung, but here’s a little secret: the younger your baby, the easier he/she is likely to be on the plane. (It’s when they start celebrating major milestones—crawling, walking, climbing—that things get hard.) Portugal is an ideal landing pad thanks to its family-friendly locals, easy-to-navigate roads, and beautiful cities and coastlines. Make the Cascais region—located 25 miles outside of capital city Lisbon, it’s nicknamed the Portuguese Riviera—your landing pad. Here, you can throw on the Ergobaby and explore Carcaevlos Beach’s golden sands or Sintra-Cascais Natural Park , known for its dramatic cliffs and Atlantic views. As for your accommodations, look no further than Martinhal Cascais , a hotel and collection of villas that marries sophistication with family travel. While rooms are fresh and chic, they’re also equipped with conveniences like bottle sterilizers, baby gates, and door handle protectors. The property’s restaurants also have playscapes, and chefs make fruit and veggie purees daily.

Toronto skyline at night

Toronto, Canada

Don’t overlook cities when traveling with babies. In many ways, kiddos under a year are the easiest urban companions. You can wear them in the Bjorn, and they often sleep on the go. The Queen City is particularly effortless with littles. It’s clean, easy to get around, and oh-so friendly (this is Canada, after all). Green spaces such as Trinity Bellwoods and High Park are dotted with playgrounds, stroller-friendly pathways, and splash pads. A ferry ride to Central Island is also a must for its waterfront trails, old-fashioned amusement park, and quiet lake beaches. Book a room at Hotel X , located on the Lake Ontario waterfront, for its family-friendly amenities (cribs, bath products, and pint-sized robes and slippers) as well as children’s books and a toy gift upon arrival. And large, intuitive room layouts means moms and dads don’t have to huddle in the bathroom when babies bed down at 6:30 PM. Instead, they can sip vino in a separate living room, enjoying uninterrupted views of the CN Tower from floor-to-ceiling windows.

Fireworks display in Seaside, FL

Seaside, Florida

Craving sun and sand? It’s hard to beat the Sunshine State when it comes to family-friendly beaches in Miami, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and beyond. When traveling with a baby, however, consider the Emerald Coast. A string of relaxed resorts and laid-back beach communities line the coastline’s main thoroughfare, Highway 30A, including our pick, Seaside. You might recognize the idyllic village from the movie The Truman Show : Here, pastel houses are framed by white picket fences and manicured streets see more strollers than cars. Restaurants such as the Shrimp Shack  overlook its quiet beaches, which are ideal for first-time swimmers thanks to their tranquil turquoise waters. Pro parent tip: when traveling with a baby to the beach, consider bringing a dock-a-tot or empty baby pool. As much as your beach babe might love a dip in the water, sand—which eventually ends up in their eyes—can also be a big irritant.

Dreamy mountain-scape with cotton candy skies and a man skiing in Vail, Colorado

Vail, Colorado

Just because you’ve got a tiny sidekick doesn’t mean you have to give up on winter sports, especially when you’re traveling to Vail . The ski resort offers childcare for infants starting at two months, meaning you can hit the slopes or snowshoe the trails. Vail also has free public transportation throughout town as well as thoughtfully designed playgrounds. Stay at the  Antlers at Vail hotel, located in Vail’s family-friendly Lionshead neighborhood just steps from the Eagle Bahn Gondola, whose all-condominium accommodations mean you can spread out and take advantage of a kitchen—there’s also a free shuttle to the grocery store—but still enjoy white-glove service. Call ahead to pre-arrange for anything from baby monitors to bottle warmers and even car seats. And for breast-feeding moms, they’re no cozier corner than by the in-room fireplace.

Beltane Ranch

Sonoma, California

Believe it or not, the Golden State’s wine country is an ideal getaway with a baby. There’s something restful and unhurried about its farmlands and outdoor draws. This is especially true in Sonoma, thanks to its inviting towns and unpretentious vineyards. At Iron Horse , where you can sip Brut while your baby naps, the atmosphere is casual and agricultural—a welcome surprise for a vineyard whose wines ended up in President Reagan’s White House. Back in Healdsburg, grab an early dinner at Shed , a restaurant and artisan shop that’s lively enough to lull your babe to sleep. If you’d like to wake up among the vines, stay at Beltane Ranch —book one of the stand-alone cottages for additional space and privacy—where you can request a family picnic overlooking olive orchards. Also make a day trip to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve  and introduce your infant to centuries-old trees.

Sunset on the beach in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Family comes first in Mexico, and traveling to the country with a baby makes you feel nothing short of a celebrity. It’s not uncommon to be stopped—and your baby admired —whether you’re walking through zocalos , or city squares, or strolling down waterfront boardwalks. At the  Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit  in Puerto Vallarta, an oceanfront all-inclusive, the VIB (Very Important Baby) treatment is taken to another level. Little tikes are greeted with Mexican toys, pool floats, and even baby clothes. Take your wee one to the spa for his or her first haircut, which is celebrated with a certificate and followed by a massage. At mealtime, babies can pair their usual breast milk or formula with freshly made bowls of pio pio purée (chicken breast, carrots, zucchini), so don’t be surprised if their first words are mas, por favor.

I've visited 93 countries, 57 of them with kids. These 5 underrated spots are great places to enjoy with your family.

  • Karen Edwards has traveled to 93 countries, and 57 of them have been with her young children.
  • Edwards said that her family has had more fun exploring underrated spots than the popular ones.
  • Her favorites include Tanzania for its safari tours and Abu Dhabi for its vibrant festival scene.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karen Edwards , who blogs about her family's travels around the world. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Since 2000, I've visited 93 countries and 57 of them have been with my four children who are all under the age of 10.

I am a nurse by background, but I have been blogging about traveling with my husband and kids since 2014. I cover a lot of off-the-beaten-track destinations and write itineraries for places I've been to, explaining how they work for families with children.

Many popular family destinations tend to be overcrowded. They're usually the ones that get a lot of media exposure or are shown in viral videos on social media. In America, it'd be places like Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida, while for Europeans, it might be some of the Spanish resort areas.

Although my family and I have visited these places, we have always come away disappointed. They often lack educational experiences, feeling like pointless affairs.

I think traveling to underrated spots makes trips feel more exclusive and you can learn more about the cultures of the countries you visit — it also keeps you away from tourist traps.

We went on a safari tour in Tanzania

Our family visited Tanzania in 2019 in collaboration with a tourism brand. We were there for 12 days.

Our flights to the country were kind of expensive; we paid about $9,000 for our then-family of four, including a stop in Zanzibar at the end of the trip for a few days. However, overall, the entire trip didn't end up costing us that much.

We had some really unique experiences in Tanzania. We went to Mto Wa Mbu village , which is beneath a banana plantation, and we went on a safari tour in its Lake Manyara National Park .

Interestingly, Tanzania is one of the few places in the world where lions are known to climb trees. I remember seeing them sit in tall trees; it was quite unusual, but my kids really enjoyed how close they were to the animals.

Throughout our trip, we actually felt like we were experiencing life in Tanzania. Our campsite was on a river's edge in the depths of nature. It was nice not to feel surrounded by tourists.

My kids fell in love with Abu Dhabi's culture

Many people mistakenly believe that Dubai is a country, but in reality, it's a city in the United Arab Emirates, with Abu Dhabi being its capital.

My family and I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2021 and lived there for 18 months. The city does have a lot of similarities to glitzy and glam Dubai , but you get a more down-to-earth experience.

There are amazing festivals in Abu Dhabi where they display their culture in different formats, whether that be through local food or crafts. It does feel authentic because it's usually mainly locals participating and organizing them.

The city is also 1.5 hours away from Al Ain, which sits at the foot of  Jebel Hafeet , one of the tallest mountains in the region. Along the way up, you'll find many ancient artifacts, such as beehive huts, which have been there for thousands of years. At the top, you can watch incredible sunsets.

Related stories

The city also has the Al Ain Oasis , which uses an ancient irrigation system. It has these beautiful paved pathways that look like cobbled streets.

My kids loved Abu Dhabi and are constantly asking me to go back — they really liked all the cultural celebrations.

We love Sri Lanka so much, we're building a villa there

In 2022, my family and I moved to Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi. We thought we'd have more family time here, and it was going to be an affordable place to live.

We're building a family-friendly villa here that should be completed by August. The area where we are building has a lot of nice cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Overall, Sri Lanka is an amazing country that has so many diverse experiences. There are tea plantations, mountains, and beaches. As for wildlife, their national parks have loads of elephants and leopards.

On one occasion, we went on a safari boat tour to an isolated national park where we watched elephants swim across a lake and onto a tiny island. It was amazing.

The beaches in Sri Lanka are pristine. They have beautiful scenery with swaying coconut palm trees, clear water, and perfect waves. Our favorite is Kabalana Beach .

Because we're always on the beach, my children have learned how to surf. I think it's the most fun thing that we do on the weekends as a family.

The ski resorts and spas are amazing in Andorra

We visited Andorra in 2018 for about six days. It's a tiny country nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain. It's a two-hour drive from Barcelona and three hours from Toulouse, France.

The city has a unique fusion of cultures, though I think Catalonian is the strongest influence. During our trip, my family and I toured many ancient churches.

We also went to some amazing spas and resorts in Andorra. The hotel and ski system there is really family-friendly.

During our visit to the Grandvalira ski resort , my daughter learned how to ski and my husband got to snowboard — the resort has a kindergarten at the foot of its mountain, where kids can play or ski.

Andorra also has amazing spa facilities that are suitable for families and are sectioned off for different age groups.

Our trip was in collaboration with Andorra's tourism board, but I feel like it wasn't overly expensive in comparison to some other places around the world.

I was treated like family in Macedonia

Macedonia is a Balkan country just north of Greece. I haven't been there with children, but I wouldn't have any issues taking my kids there.

It has many beautiful small villages and it's great for skiing too.

The country is also home to one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe named Lake Orchid, which borders Albania. There's this beautiful, small village on the lake that has charming restaurant and a lovely atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying good food.

I visited the country in 2008, and then again in 2012 with my then-boyfriend and now-husband.

The first time I visited, I went with two girlfriends, and we were backpackers. We arrived in the middle of the night by bus and had no idea what we were doing. The bus driver just made a call, and a stranger came and picked us up in his car — I thought I was going to die.

The opposite happened. He took us back to his home with his family, and we stayed there with them for a few days. We ended up extending the trip because he and his family were so amazing.

They didn't speak a word of English, and we couldn't speak a word of their language either. We'd just gesture at each other, and they'd give us food and red wine.

I just totally fell in love with them and their country.

10 Most Baby-Friendly International Destinations

T raveling with a baby takes work. You’re hauling tons of gear (who knew so many tiny pieces of clothing could take up so much space?), juggling nap and feeding times, and hoping they won’t try to put something they found on a gross airport carpet in their mouth. It’s not a vacation—it’s a trip.

But it’s so worth it. As challenging as traveling internationally with a baby can be, vacations with a baby force you to slow down and truly experience a place. Maybe it’s giggling with delight over ocean waves or pausing to watch the way the stop lights change in a new city. While traveling with a baby might look different, it shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world. And finding the best places to travel with a baby will help ease your new path as a family of travelers.

The Best International Destinations to Travel with a Baby

Choosing a destination you’ll all enjoy is key to a successful trip. While every country has its cultural quirks, you’ll want to choose one that’s more accommodating to families (where it’s common to see high chairs in restaurants and you can easily maneuver a stroller on sidewalks, for example).

You’ll need to adjust expectations and pace, too. Remember: Keep your plans flexible and go with the flow. This might not be a check-every-item-off-your-list kind of trip, and that’s okay. Instead, embrace a slower pace and enjoy watching your little one explore.

TRAVEL WITH A BABY: 10 Baby-Friendly Vacations That Everyone in the Family Can Enjoy

1. Negril, Jamaica

Few places in the Caribbean cater to babies as well as the resorts in Jamaica do. If you’re looking to enjoy a relaxing Caribbean beach vacation , stay in the Negril area , where you’ll find miles of sparkling water and the sandy beaches of your dreams. Babies and beach vacations go together well—find yourself a shady beach chair and camp out for the day. (Infants under six months shouldn’t use sunscreen, so go light on too much sun time for now.)

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: 10 Great All-Inclusive Family Resorts in the Caribbean

Where to Stay: If you’re traveling with more family members, check out an all-inclusive option that allows for more family-friendly adventure like sailing, snorkeling, golf, and tennis. Resorts like the Azul Beach Resort Negril and Beaches Negril offer kids clubs, baby-specific amenities like baths, “bottle service,” a baby food menu, and onsite babysitting services.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Babies (and older kids) will be fascinated by the tile-covered cities in Portugal . If your baby is obsessed with all things trucks, trains, and automobiles, they’ll love the iconic yellow trams you can find around the city of Lisbon . Explore the Belém park and monuments (don’t miss the pastries at nearby Pasteis de Belém ) and the Parque das Nações , home to one of the largest aquariums in Europe. Lisbon does get crowded, so visit in shoulder season months like May or September to get some breathing room for your little one.

EURO BABY: 11 Best Family Vacation Spots in Europe

While you’re there, don’t miss a day trip to nearby Sintra. The colorful architecture and sprawling palaces make it a great place to explore. Bring a carrier instead of your stroller, though, as there are lots of cobblestones.

Where to Stay: In Lisbon, the Corpo Santo has two-bedroom family rooms, included breakfast, and free cribs or extra beds for children under age six. If you want more room and a kitchen, Villa Baixa Luxury Apartments offer apartment layouts and double-glazed windows so city sounds don’t wake your little one at naptime.

3. Tokyo, Japan

You’ll have to brave a long flight to get to Japan—it’s 13 hours from Los Angeles to Tokyo , and more like 20 from the East Coast—but if you’re up for it, it’s absolutely worth it. It’s not for the faint of heart, so bring plenty of entertainment, like the Yoto Mini Player and sensory toys like these spinners . Just make sure to always supervise kids under three with big-kid toys like the Yoto, and check for small parts or choking hazards for any toys you bring before you depart.

GO BIG: 50 Best Family Vacation Ideas for This Year and Next

That long flight is worth it, because Japan is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the world. That’s mainly because the level of social trust in Japan is high, meaning you’ll find friendly faces and plenty of young kids navigating public life completely on their own. Skip theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland or Sanrio Puroland unless you have toddlers or older kids with you. Instead, head for Ueno Zoo or Kidzania for more structured activities, or head to a park like Yoyogi Park for a relaxing stroll.

Where to Stay: The Tokyo Station Hotel isn’t just beautiful and centrally located, it’s also surprisingly baby-friendly. Let the hotel know you’ll be arriving with a baby and it will arrange the room accordingly with little extras like little toothbrushes, pajamas, and slippers. Breakfast is also free for kids three and younger.

4. Tuscany, Italy

Slow down and live la dolce vita in Tuscany with your little one. While there are plenty of wonderful hotels all over Tuscany — a region that includes bigger cities like Florence , Siena , and Lucca — there’s nothing better than renting a house and car of your own as a home base to explore in a smaller city or town like Montepulciano , Sansepolcro , or San Gimignano . In Italy, little bambini are welcomed in public life. Don’t be surprised if strangers want to come say hello or pinch a cheek—or if you see young kids chowing down late into the evening with parents at restaurants.

FUN FOR PARENTS TOO: 10 Toddler-Friendly Vacations That Are Just as Much Fun for Parents

One thing to keep in mind in Italy is that restaurants open late, often not before 7 PM, and many don’t offer takeout. Instead, do your dining out for lunch then hit up a delicious open-air market for supplies so you can cook yourself dinner on your own schedule. Another bonus for taking your baby to Italy: there’s no better place for your little one to try their first solid foods—who would say no to a little homemade pasta?

Where to Stay: VRBO lists some amazing baby- and kid-friendly villas, apartments, and houses in and near San Gimignano , Montepulciano , and Sansepolcro . It also has plenty of more urban options in Florence , Siena , and Lucca .

5. Vancouver, Canada

One of the best parts of traveling with a baby is that they’re along for the ride. If you love the great outdoors, British Columbia is a fantastic destination. Pack an ergonomic carrier like the Ergobaby 360 Omni Breeze , and if they’re over six months, the Osprey Poco Plus backpack is a great choice for day hikes. Take a day trip to the Redwood Park Fairy Forest or the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary , both about an hour’s drive from the city.

ROAD TRIP: How to Safely Road Trip with a Baby

Vancouver itself is full of walkable avenues and green spaces. Within Vancouver proper, you can stroll a 9km loop around Stanley Park , visit the Vancouver Aquarium , or climb high into the trees at the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Where to Stay: The Sylvia Hotel , a waterfront hotel in the Westend neighborhood close to Stanley Park, has three-bed units that offer two separate sleeping spaces—a real boon if you don’t keep the same hours as your baby.

6. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the kind of baby-friendly destination that ticks off all of the boxes for any vacation: Cultural icons ( Parc Guell and Sagrada Familia ), perfect weather ( 300 days of sunshine , on average), delicious food (paella, anyone?), and access to a beach.

KIDS SAIL FREE: 7 Cruise Lines Letting Kids (and Babies) Sail Free

When in Spain with a baby, do as the Spanish do: Siesta. Each day from around 2:00 in the afternoon until 5:00, most offices and shops close for a period of rest. Instead of go-go-going, embrace the pace of life and nap or have quiet time during the day before heading out for dinner. While most restaurants don’t open properly until late (7 PM is early here), you can enjoy tapas, small plates, earlier in the evening.

Where to Stay: Casa Camper has some things that really work for young families, including a location that’s both super central and quiet (with sound-proof rooms; good both for you and your neighbors). Many rooms have separate lounge areas, some with hammocks—the perfect spot to rock a baby to sleep in comfort.

7. Singapore

If you can deal with a long flight, Singapore is a great family-friendly destination. One of the safest and cleanest countries in the world (the Global Peace Index consistently ranks Singapore in the top 10), you’ll find year-round sunshine, plenty of stroller-friendly parks, and exciting things to do for you and your little one. Hang out at one of the many sculpture parks , picnic at the Gardens by the Bay , or visit the S.E.A. Aquarium , one of the largest aquariums in the world with over 100,000 marine animals.

HANDS-FREE: 7 Best Baby Carriers for Travel

Where to Stay: With a little over 130 rooms, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong isn’t huge, but it does have some nice offerings for families. There’s a rooftop infinity pool, and family rooms complete with blackout curtains.

8. The Cotswolds, England

With babies, you need to go with the flow. There’s no better place to do that than the British countryside. With plenty of stroller-friendly paths, adorable villages, and hiking trails, you can enjoy quiet gardens, green rolling hills, and family-friendly attractions like the Westonbirt Arboretum , Castle Combe , and Bibury Trout Farm .

Where to Stay: Hotels like the Calcot and Spa , Lucknam Park , and Woolley Grange go above and beyond, offering amenities like babysitting, swim lessons, play barns, and sterilizers and bottle brushes for little ones.

Just a quick two hour flight from New York City is the island of Bermuda , with pink sand beaches and plenty of family-friendly resorts to choose from. In the past few years, the island has also become a top babymoon destination , catering to expectant parents and families.

Where to Stay: This kind of attention and care expands to new additions as well, with resorts like the Rosewood Bermuda and Grotto Bay Beach Resort and Spa offering separate kiddie pool areas, babysitting services, pool and beach toys, and more for little ones. Older kids can enjoy kid’s clubs and camp-like experiences full of sailing, snorkeling, music, games, and more.

10. Copenhagen, Denmark

The Nordic countries are well-known as great places to raise a family. You’ll likely see strollers parked outside of storefronts or restaurants with no parent in sight. Public places are accommodating to strollers and you’ll find family-friendly amenities everywhere you go.

WINTER ESCAPES: Get Outside This Winter at These Top Cross-Country Ski Resorts in the U.S.

Copenhagen has no shortage of family-friendly things to do, from strolling the beautiful Tivoli Gardens to exploring the brightly colored Nyhavn neighborhood. What’s more, the city has more than 120 playgrounds , and some even have childcare professionals on site. Don’t miss the Byoasen , a petting-zoo style park where kids can interact with goats, chickens, rabbits, and more. And for older kids, a day trip to Legoland is a must .

Where to Stay: In Copenhagen, the Nimb Hotel skews luxury, but with a baby-friendly twist. The hotel offers connecting family rooms and babysitting, plus bath products formulated for babies and kids, kid-friendly minibar items, and gifts for little ones. If you’re traveling with a baby and an older child and want to spend more than a day at Legoland, the Legoland Castle Hotel is a major crowd-pleaser.
