Bahrain Victorious

After adding the word ‘Victorious’ to their moniker two years ago, few expected this Bahraini WorldTour outfit to live up to their new name and be mightily successful at cycling’s top-level.

While they haven’t established themselves as the best team on the men’s WorldTour, they have certainly not disappointed. Last season saw them win big at Milan-San Remo thanks to a dropper post and nerves of steel from Matej Mohorič, while Dylan Teuns delivered a victory at La Flèche Wallonne for the first time in their history. Sadly, the team witnessed the departure of Sonny Colbrelli in 2022 after the sprinter was forced to retire due to a heart condition.

After a breakthrough season, though, British all-rounder Fred Wright could step into the former Paris-Roubaix winner’s shoes when it comes to picking up wins in both the Classics and Grand Tours.

Bahrain-Merida becomes Team Bahrain McLaren

bahrain world tour cycle

Bahrain-Merida has now confirmed they will race under the name Bahrain McLaren next season, as bike brand Merida steps back after three seasons.

Former British Cycling and Team Sky coach Rod Ellingworth has taken up his role as team principal and is targeting Grand Tour success with the help of McLaren, which owns 50 per cent of the UCI WorldTour team.

Bahrain McLaren have signed Mark Cavendish, Mikel Landa and Wout Poels for 2020.

“We are delighted to have formalised our joint venture partnership with Bahrain World Tour Cycling Team,” new Joint Managing Director John Allert said.

“As Bahrain-Merida, the team quickly established its credentials in the most elite form of road racing – the UCI WorldTour – becoming the only team ever to score a Grand Tour podium in its debut year, and most recently winning two stages of this year’s Tour de France. As Bahrain McLaren we are excited to build on that legacy, and to work with a variety of technical partners, including Merida, to write a new chapter of success.

“McLaren’s racing pedigree is founded on decades of performance in the most technologically advanced sport in the world. We now look forward to applying this knowledge to elite cycling, for the benefit of our riders, our partners and fans of this exciting and rapidly growing sport. We are confident that professional cycling is entering a great new era, an era in which passion and technology will combine to unleash exciting new possibilities. This is what Team Bahrain McLaren is all about.”

Bahrain McLaren also confirmed that Milan Eržen will work alongside Allert as Joint Managing Director.

McLaren take on title deal for Bahrain WorldTour cycling team

Le col also signed on as rebranded outfit’s technical kit partner..

bahrain world tour cycle

Automotive giant McLaren has signed a partnership deal that sees the Bahrain state-backed WorldTour cycling outfit rebranded as Team Bahrain-McLaren.

As part of the new relationship, McLaren will contribute to optimising the team’s technology, managing athletic performance and developing strategic marketing activities.

The deal, which also brings about a number of changes to the team’s structure, ends bike manufacturer Merida’s term as both primary partner and title sponsor.

As part of the restructure, McLaren’s chief marketing officer John Allert has joined as joint managing director; ex-Team Ineos coach Rod Ellingworth comes on board as team principal; Roger Hammond is the new performance director; and Charlie Pym has been appointed as marketing director.

Bahrain-McLaren’s teams in medicine, therapy, sports direction, coaching, nutrition and mechanical services have also received additions.

Joint managing director Milan Erzen said: “We’re incredibly proud of what we have achieved as Bahrain-Merida, and delighted that we can now combine that experience with our joint venture partner McLaren, to innovate together in this great sport.

“Cycling is developing into an increasingly technical sport, and as Team Bahrain-McLaren we will be well placed to compete with the best, and to work with our many partners to challenge the status quo.”

Newly appointed joint managing director John Allert added: “As Bahrain-Merida, the team quickly established its credentials in the most elite form of road racing, the UCI WorldTour, becoming the only team ever to score a Grand Tour podium in its debut year, and most recently winning two stages of this year’s Tour de France.

“As Bahrain-McLaren we are excited to build on that legacy, and to work with a variety of technical partners, including Merida, to write a new chapter of success.”

Merida does retain its position as both the team’s bike supplier and technical partner, whilst Bahrain-McLaren’s kit will be supplied by British brand Le Col in a newly announced deal.

Le Col has also signed on as the rebranded outfit’s technical kit partner.

Bahrain Championship marks 13 year return to the DP World Tour

Khalid bin Hamad announces His Majesty the King’s sponsorship of the DB World World Golf Championship

Bahrain, GCC: The DP World Tour is making a long-awaited return to the Kingdom of Bahrain for the first time in 13 years with the Bahrain Championship, set to take place at Royal Golf Club from February 1-4, 2024.

The announcement of the tournament, which will be held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa , was marked by a special signing ceremony by His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa alongside DP World Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley .

“We are pleased to host the Bahrain Championship on the DP World Tour in the Kingdom of Bahrain,” said His Highness. “This championship, which forms part of what is an elite professional golf tournament series, is organised in cooperation between the Royal Golf Club, the General Sports Authority, the Bahrain Olympic Committee, and the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority.

“Golf is a sport that receives major support and sponsorship from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. His Majesty is a passionate practitioner and enthusiast of this sport, which reflects His Majesty's great interest in and support for sports and athletes. His Majesty is the foremost athlete in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Commitment to supporting various sports

“We take pride in hosting this international championship, where a constellation of professional players will compete at the Royal Golf Club. Organising this event is part of our continued commitment to supporting various sports, including golf, which is one of the most important sports at the global level. We have full confidence in the success of this championship, thanks to the cooperation and integration between various civil and governmental entities in presenting it in the best possible manner.

“Through embracing this championship, we aim to elevate Bahrain's position and showcase its capabilities in hosting sporting events. We also want to emphasise our commitment to the development of golf in the Kingdom. We wish all participants continued success and prosperity.”

Paul Casey last winner in Bahrain

The last time the DP World Tour was in the Kingdom of Bahrain was in 2011, when Englishman  Paul Casey came through what he called "one of the toughest battles I've ever had" to end 20 months without a victory by winning the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions on the Colin Montgomerie  designed Royal Golf Club course in Bahrain.

“We are thrilled to welcome back the DP World Tour to Bahrain,” said His Excellency Faris Mustafa Al Kooheji , Secretary General of Bahrain Olympic Committee. “Golf is a game, not only of great skill, but one which showcases the highest levels of sportsmanship, fairness and etiquette and one which the Kingdom is proud to support and encourage. Through hosting the Bahrain Championship and welcoming some of the best golfers in the world, we are underlining our commitment to this wonderful sport.”

Creating opportunities for Bahraini players

Two amateur spots will be up for grabs at the Bahrain Amateur Open, taking place October 12-14. The overall winner plus a spot for the leading Bahraini amateur will be awarded at this prestigious amateur event. Additionally, the leading Bahraini as well as the winner of the King Hamad Trophy, played November 23-25, will get the opportunity of a lifetime to tee it up alongside the DP World Tour professionals in the Bahrain Championship.

Opportunities born out through an initiative between the Bahrain Olympic Committee and the DP World Tour to give Bahraini players the chance to tee it up against the worlds best players.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the DP World Tour, said: “I would firstly like to thank His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa and His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa for welcoming us to the Kingdom of Bahrain as we launch a new event on our International Schedule.

“The Bahrain Championship will mark the DP World Tour’s return to the Kingdom of Bahrain for the first time since 2011 and helps form part of our International Swing of events.

“We are excited to return to Bahrain in February as we continue to showcase our diverse array of tournaments in different countries and cultures across the world.”

Prize fund of $2.5 million

With just over 100 days to go until the event, which has a prize fund of $2.5 million, the Royal Golf Club course has undergone extensive upgrades, supported by Osool Asset Management and Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (Mumtalakat), the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Bahrain, headed by His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa . Among the key enhancements is the upgrading of a number of greens on the front nine to ensure it is in prime condition to welcome the elite stars of the DP World Tour.

“We are delighted to have been chosen as the host venue for the DP World Tour’s visit in 2024," said Captain Waleed Al Alawi , Chairman of the Royal Golf Club. "This tournament will shine a spotlight on Bahrain's sports scene and will further establish the Royal Golf Club as a leading golfing destination in the region. We are excited to welcome the world's top golfers to our esteemed club and showcase the beauty of our country."

Dr. Nasser Qaedi , CEO of Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, added: "We seize this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), Chairman of the General Sports Authority (GSA), and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) for His Highness’s limitless support and relentless efforts for the sports development in the Kingdom, particularly attracting major international sports events in Bahrain.

"The DP World Tour comes in line with the Tourism Strategy (2022-2026) objectives to quadruple inbound tourism and increase the contribution of the tourism sector to the national economy, focusing on sports and recreation tourism as one of the main pillars of the strategy to strongly position Bahrain as the leading regional hub for the tourism and entertainment industries. In this regard, we at BTEA are fully committed to offering all kinds of support and enhancing collaboration to make this exceptional sports event a complete success".

They join Brent Copeland who moves to the new position of Operations Director, and Charlie Pym, who joins the team as Marketing Director.

John Allert, Joint Managing Director of Team Bahrain McLaren commented: “This is a great moment in the story of our team – joining forces with Bahrain World Tour Cycling Team to challenge the conventions of a sport we love and respect is exciting for everyone involved. We hope to give cycling’s passionate fans something new to cheer – this is a team built for tomorrow, with a great respect for the past. McLaren will bring technology to the team, a culture of continuous improvement, dynamic marketing and innovation forged in the most technically demanding sport in the world – F1. However, this is a phenomenally competitive sport, and we don’t underestimate the challenges nor the strength of our competition.”

The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey returns to the calendar again keen to show off the natural wonders of the country to the world and to provide an excellent spectacle for bike racing fans.

This year, just four World Tour teams have turned up in the shape of BORA - hansgrohe, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Alpecin - Deceuninck so this will open up opportunities for some of the smaller teams to score a big victory in this prestigious race.

With a host of sprint stages along the route it’s no surprise to see some of the world’s best sprinters present including Sam Welsford (BORA - hansgrohe), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and back after illness the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

Travelling east to west the first seven stages hug the beautiful coast line hopping from town to town, resort to resort before a long transfer to stage eight in the magical city of Istanbul.

When you are hot you are hot and Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) is on fire taking his third win of the race on stage seven. The plan it seemed was to lead out Fabio Jakobsen but he was just too strong and kept going all the way to the line.

Going into the final stage on the streets of Istanbul the over all lead is still in the hands of another DSM-Firmenich PostNL rider Frank van den Broke. four seconds ahead of Merhawi Kudus.

Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey 2024 stages

The eight stage tour starts with a predominantly flat 135km around the city of Antalya to provide opportunity number one for the big sprinters before starting its journey westwards along the coast line.

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.

Tour de Romandie: Brandon McNulty takes comfortable win on stage 3 time trial

Magnus Sheffield (Ineos-Grenadiers) in distant second as Ayuso takes overall lead

How it Unfolded

US Champion Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) put his stamp on the stage 3 time trial, winning the 15.5km race against the clock in 20:06 at the Tour de Romandie .

"It was nice. I didn't know what to expect after the last few days. I had a good ride, and maybe I was a bit lucky with the weather. It's nice to have a win," said McNulty, who was an early start under dry conditions that then turned to rain in the last half of the event.

"I was lucky to be in the dry, and it's a bit strange because you don't know if you were actually the fastest, but always happy with a win."

His fellow countryman Magnus Sheffield (Ineos-Grenadiers) was a distant second, finishing the time trial 13 seconds slower than McNulty.

It was a good day for UAE Team Emirates as McNulty's teammates Felix Großschartner finished in third place at 15 seconds down and Juan Ayuso in fourth at 21 seconds down, taking the overall race lead in Oron.

"Now we obviously need to defend because tomorrow will be a tough day," McNulty said. "We look forward to defending the jersey now."

Ayuso now leads the overall classification by seven seconds ahead of Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) and 10 seconds ahead of Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe).

The race heads into the mountains for the queen stage 4 on Saturday, a 160km race from Saillon to Leysin.

The third stage at the Tour de Romandie was a 15.5km time trial that started and finished in Oron with a loop that offered a gentle rise on the way out to the mid-route (7.9km) time check and a predominantly downhill back into Oron. Although the event started under dry conditions, the rain rolled in for the second half of the race, making the roads slippery and dangerous for the late starters.

McNulty was an early starter, setting the benchmark for the rest of the riders with the fastest opening time, 20:06.

In the first half of the starting order, few riders came close to McNulty's time until his teammate Felix Großschartner finished with 20:21. Großschartner slotted in behind McNulty and jumped Johan Price-Pejtersen (Bahrain-Victorious) down to third.

The finishing order reshuffled behind McNulty again when his compatriot Sheffield stormed over the line with a new best runner-up time of 20:19, but still 13 seconds slower than McNulty.

Racing conditions worsened as the time trial progressed, with rain and slippery roads affecting the later starters and many of the general classification favourites.

Quick times came in from Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) at 20:29, Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis) at 20:38, and Thymen Arensman (Ineos-Grenadiers) at 20:43, but it increasingly appeared that none would come close to McNulty's time.

UAE Team Emirates' GC hopeful Ayuso started the day in seventh place overall, but he crossed the line with the fourth-fastest time of 20:27, which put him in a position to take the overall classification lead.

Also in the hunt for the GC, Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos-Grenadiers) finished with a time of 20:34 and moved up ten spots to fourth overall, while Vlasov finished in 20:36 and moved up to third and Van Wilder with the same time but moved up to second overall.

Australian Champion Luke Plapp (Ineos-Grenadiers) - spotted riding a brand news Giant Trinity TT bike - slipped from third place overall to seventh, finishing the time trial in 21:05. Likewise, Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), who posted a time of 21:41, slipped from second to 15th overall.

Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek), the previous day's stage winner and overnight leader, was the last rider out on the course. While he looked comfortable closing out the event under the rainy conditions, his time of 21:44 wasn't enough to keep the yellow jersey.
