Bali is one of the most popular tropical destinations across the world. The fact that Bali has so many beaches, exciting beach clubs, breathtaking rice terraces, and activities lie surfing, diving, and lots more make it a popular destination among all kinds of people. I myself had planned a month-long sojourn in Bali to try and cover as much of the island as I can. Those of you who follow me on Instagram will know that I couldn't complete my trip due to a scooter accident. However, looking at the bright side, I've put together everything I know about how to plan a Bali budget trip into this blog post.

Budget Trip to Bali

A lot of people going to Bali are looking for cost-saving tips in order to make a budget trip to Bali. Since Bali is a huge island with so much to offer, you need a lot of time to cover most of it. Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu, and 3 Nusa islands are some of the popular places in Bali. To cover most of Bali, you need to spend at least 10-15 days here minimum. And if you're spending so much time in one place, it's natural that you're looking for cost-saving tips. With this guide on how to make a budget trip to Bali, I hope to help you plan the perfect budget Bali trip for yourself

How to Reach Bali

If you're going to Bali from the US or some places in Europe, you may be able to find a direct flight. However, Air Asia is one of the cheapest and the carrier with most flights to and from cities in Asia. They have lots of flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok etc to Bali. Thus you can book a flight to one of these cities then take another one to Bali.

How to Reach Bali from India

There are many Indian and foreign airlines operating from India to Kuala Lumpur. At Kuala Lumpur, you can connect to a flight which will take you to Bali. You can even get connecting flights to Bali via Singapore or Thailand from India. I've broken down some of the budget airlines and their pros and cons below.

Air Asia is one of the major airlines operating to and from destinations in Asia. What I like about this airline is that there are many flights operating from multiple cities in India at different times of the day. I had lots of options when it came to choosing the city to fly out of India and the time of the day. One minus point though is that there is no checked luggage included. You will need to purchase that additionally if you wish to carry checked luggage. Other than that, Air Asia operates like any other budget airline I've flown with in India.

Malindo Air

I loved travelling by Malindo Air. There was so much legroom that I wasn't accustomed to seeing on budget airlines. Every seat came with a cute little back pillow . But that wasn't even the best part about travelling to Bali on a Malindo Air flight. There were entertainment units installed which had the latest TV shows and movies. In fact, there were shows for kids and games as well. Another thing I liked was the 15 kg checked baggage that came free with my flight ticket purchase. However, be careful that your checked bag does not weigh more than the permissible weight because the airline charges heavy fees for excess weight. Believe me, I've made the mistake and regret the exorbitant amount I had to pay.

Book Hostels in Bali

Bali has a lot of hostels with cool amenities. In fact, for most of my Bali trip, I had booked hostels. Each and every one of them came with a pool. How cool is that?! While I was in Canggu I stayed at the Canggu Castle hostel for quite a few days. The lounge and pool area was unlike anything I've ever seen in a  hostel. Plus they had comfy beds, clean rooms and even a nice terrace. This hostel is located in the Berawa Canggu area which is close to a lot of beach clubs and some amazing cafes and restaurants.

Rent Airbnbs in Bali

Apart from hostels, I had even booked a few airbnbs to splurge and enjoy a private comfortable stay after a few hectic sightseeing days. Bali has a lot of amazing airbnbs - many of them even come with bathtubs, private pools and swings. The cost of these airbnbs ranges from extremely inexpensive to luxurious rates. There's something for every budget. What I loved about airbnbs in Bali though is that a lot of properties come with pools and nice balconies. Just enter your budget and amenities filters and search for the perfect stay for youself.

Bali Currency

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) which is used in Bali, Indonesia is a weak currency. As of 21 April 2020, 1 Indian rupee (INR) is equivalent to 204 IDR and 1 USD is equivalent to 15682.50 IDR. This gives a slight advantage to anyone making a budget trip to Bali from India or from the US or Europe.

Where to Eat in Bali During a Bali Budget Trip

While there are plenty of cafes and upscale restaurants in Bali, I found that the most cost-effective way to have a good meal was to visit a local warung. Warungs in Bali are small restaurants run by locals. A lot of warungs have a buffet system where you pick dishes you like and only pay for what you eat which can cost as less as IDR 25k (roughly INR 150 or 2 USD). On the other hand, you can even order dishes from a menu. At the local warungs where I ate, I was able to have hearty delicious meals at unbelievably cheap prices. I recommend Warung O-Em-Ge in Canggu for a good nasi goreng.

Getting Around Bali

Uber is an unpopular option in Bali. The taxi unions do not like having outside organisations taking away business. Therefore there's another alternative to Uber in Bali which is called Grab . It works just like any cab-hailing app does. Just download the app, enter your pickup point and your destination and choose the type of ride. Another popular alternative is to book GoJek bikes in Bali. GoJek is an app which you can use to order a 2-wheeler ride at dirt cheap rates. A person on a motorcycle will arrive, hand you a helmet and take you to your destination. Apart from that, you can even hire taxis or rent motorcycles to get around Bali.

Tips for a Bali Budget Trip

While you can easily plan a budget trip to Bali just because the place offers everything for lesser prices compared to a majority of the world, there are a few tips you can use to ensure your Bali budget trip doesn't exceed the cost you had in mind.

Going from Bali Airport to the City

The Ngurah Rai airport in Bali is located at Denpasar approximately an hour's ride away from popular places like Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud. The ride from the Bali airport to the city centre can cost a lot if you give in to the exorbitant rates of the taxi operators there. The best way to avoid paying a heavy fare price to go from Bali airport to the city is to get out of the airport, cross the road to reach the parking and order a Grab or Bluebird taxi which charge nominal and fair rates. Beware that technically these taxis are banned at the airport but you can find them at the parking lot pick-up point. Read this article for more details, which I found quite helpful.

Beware of Currency Exchange Scams

While there are a few popular Bali scams, you need to especially be wary of the currency exchange scam. If you find that you're getting an exchange rate which sounds too good to be true, chances are that it probably is! The way the scam takes place is that some local currency exchange shop will offer you a very good exchange rate. Once you hand over your money, a person sitting behind a counter counts the local currency to give you. Then they hand over the money to you. So what's the catch? After they have counted the money, they drop a few bills without you noticing and then hand over the money to you. So before you exit, count the entire amount handed over to you. If possible, exchange your currency at the airport or inside a bank.

Know Where to Withdraw Money in Bali

If you go through online forums, you'll come across a lot of people who say that they lost a lot of money after withdrawing money from an atm or they lost money after their card was swallowed by the atm. You can read about these scams in detail by doing a quick search. The way to avoid it is by only using ATMs located inside a bank. Another thing to remember is to never use an ATM inside a convenience store. Those ATMs are almost always rigged to swallow your card and scamming you out off a lot of money which can mess with your budget trip to Bali. Also, remember to always cover the keypad with your hand while entering your pin in the ATM machine and only use an ATM inside a bank .

Buy a Local Sim Card upon Arrival

Having a local sim card can benefit you in many ways. Firstly, you won't have to struggle to find wifi. Secondly, you can easily use Grab, Bluebird or GoJek to book cheap rides at your convenience anytime anywhere. Thirdly, you need not worry about excess data charges if you use your home country's sim card abroad in Bali. I bought a sim card upon arrival at Bali airport. Shopping in Bali

No trip to Bali is complete without a little shopping or maybe lots of shopping. There are plenty of nice stores in Canggu and Seminyak as well as some markets such as Love Anchor that are set up to sell products. On the other hand, you'll find a large market in Ubud at all times. Haggling is common in Bali but the best way to enjoy a shopping spree in Bali without breaking the bank is by going early in the morning. The Balinese believe the first sale of the day to be auspicious. So show up in the morning, buy all your products from the same shop and negotiate a fair price.

Indians’ Love for Bali

Bali is very special to Indians, routinely figuring on the list of places to visit for solo trips, bachelor parties, honeymoon and even family vacation. Where is Bali?

Bali is a province in the South East Asian country of Indonesia. Indonesia itself is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands. Part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Bali is located 8 degrees below the equator, falling in the southern hemisphere.

Within the archipelago of Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda Islands, the province of Bali sits in the westernmost part. Incidentally, Bali is both a province and an island. The province consists of the eponymous island and some more islands that are smaller in size as compared to Bali.

Popular islands in Bali such as Bali, Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan lie to the west of Lombok and to east of Java. Bali follows the time zone of UTC+08 which is abbreviated as WITA (Central Indonesia Time). The country of Indonesia has a total of 3 time zones.

Bali is about 5,000 kilometres from mainland India. The exact distance varies with the start and end points you choose in both the countries. While that number may seem prohibitive, flights make it very easy to travel from India to Bali and vice versa, shortening the duration to some hours.

Which is Closer to India? Bali or Mauritius?

Indians love to compare their options, especially when they plan to splurge on their overseas vacation. If you are confused between Bali and Mauritius, it helps to understand which is closer to India.

However, the answer will only make it harder to take a call. Both the destinations are approximately equidistant to India, hovering around the 5,000 km mark. Some Indian cities may be closer to Mauritius than Bali, and some may be farther.

How to Reach Bali from India?

One can journey from India to Bali in multiple ways, but not all are efficient. Each mode of transportation has its own charm, and may appeal to a certain type of traveller. Choose your transportation only after you understand all the others.

India to Bali by Flight

The quickest way to travel from India to Bali is by taking a flight. While all the existent flights from any Indian city to Bali have a layover, there used to be a direct route from Mumbai to Bali , operated by Indonesia’s national carrier – Garuda Indonesia. It is possible that similar direct flights will be introduced in the future.

Bali Airport

There is only one airport in Bali, located 13 km south of the capital of the province – Denpasar. Often referred to as Bali Airport or Denpasar Airport , the official name of this airport is I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport , shortened to Ngurah Rai International Airport .

The airport is named after Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an Indonesian freedom fighter and a national war hero. In 2016, this international airport was recognized as the 3 rd best airport in the world in terms of service. Bali Airport is the hub for Garuda Indonesia, the national airline.

It is not just the city of Bali that is beautiful. Even the airport flaunts traditional Balinese architecture alongside a modern design. The airport itself is quite small, but well equipped to handle air traffic from different parts of the world.

Flight Duration from India

Flights from India to Bali International Airport are long mainly because of the stopovers. At present (as of 2021), the shortest flight available from any city in India to Bali is 8 hours. However, the average flight time hovers around 18 hours, including the long layover. Some flights can take almost 29 hours to get you to this Indonesian city.

Flight Operators from India to Bali

Several airlines operate flights from India to Denpasar International Airport . All of the airlines have a stopover at the very least. Indian air carriers operating on this route are Air India – the national airline of India, and SpiceJet.

Other airlines that flyers can choose from are Garuda Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Lion Air, SriLankan Airlines, Indonesia AirAsia, Batik Air, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Silkair, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Biman flydubai and Malindo Air. Stopovers are generally in Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand, depending on the airline.

Departing Cities from India and Average Air Ticket Price

Many cities in India are connected to Bali by air. Popular departing cities are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Ahmedabad. These cities have flights with only one stop in between. There are no direct flights as of now.

Many other Indian cities have flights to Bali operating on the same PNR, but with 2 or more layovers. If you are travelling from Goa, Surat, Pune or Nagpur, you should brace yourself for a long journey. For all other Indian cities with airports, one must take a flight on a separate PNR to any of the cities that have frequent flight connectivity to Bali and book the onward journey on a different PNR.

The cheapest India to Bali one-way flight can be snatched up for approximately INR 15,000 for an economy class seat on the Mumbai to Denpasar route. For return trips, about INR 28,000 is required per person. This works only when you book well in advance and pick your dates after checking the price calendar.

Flights are generally cheaper in the months of April and June when the tourist rush subsides, and the most expensive in December during the peak season. Flights can cross the INR 40,000 mark during the high season, and for circuitous routes.

India to Bali by Cruise

Going to Bali from India will be even more exciting if one takes the sea route. While there are no current cruise operators that ply on this route, plans are underway to introduce a luxury cruise from Mumbai to Bali . India’s Minister of Road Transport & Highways is in negotiation with the government of Indonesia for the rollout of this plan.

The proposed route will commence from Mumbai, halting at the ports of Goa, Kochi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, before docking at Bali. The launch date and price of the cruise tour is yet to be announced.

When the India to Bali cruise finally comes to fruition, one will no longer have to go through the hassle of waiting at the existing Mumbai Port terminal. Mumbai Port Trust has plans to develop a new terminal at the port that will specifically cater to cruise tourism. Proposed near Ballard Pier, the state-of-the-art terminal will be able to handle approximately 7,00,000 passengers on an annual basis.

Sea Route Distance and Time Taken

The expected sea route distance from Mumbai to Bali (via Goa, Kochi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands) will be over 6,500 km. Broken down, the distance from Goa to Bali will be almost 6,000 km, whereas Kochi to Bali will be more than 5,100 km. The final leg of the cruise, Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Bali , will be over 3,300 km.

The cruise duration is expected to be at least 7 days, if not more. The return journey will take equally long, making the Mumbai to Bali round trip via ship a holiday of 14 days at the very least. Arrivals will be at Tanjung Benoa cruise port in Bali, which is known to be a tricky one to manoeuvre.

Cruise Fare to Bali from India

Since the official rates for the Mumbai to Bali cruise have not been disclosed yet, one can only speculate. If we do a rough estimate of the fare, it could be anywhere between INR 1,00,000 per person to INR 3,00,000 per person, depending on the cabin class. The price will be inclusive of all meals. However, expect to pay extra for certain onboard facilities such as speciality dining, spa, and drinks. Taxes and port fees may also be added.

India to Bali by Road (Possibility)

Road trips are all the craze in today’s day and age. While once upon a time, driving was restricted to weekend trips around one’s own city or within India at the most, it has now become fashionable to take the road to foreign countries as well.

It is not possible to reach Bali fully by road from India as it is an island, separated by seas. However, road trippers can take the India-Myanmar-Thailand Highway all the way to Singapore, covering about 6,000 km. If driving without any halt, the route takes over 100 hours. If you will be resting in the night and making stops for bio breaks and meals, this leg will take about 6 days.

From Singapore to Indonesia, one will have to ditch the road for a ferry transfer to Jakarta – capital city of Indonesia. The final leg, from Jakarta to Bali is a 1,200 km stretch which can take a full day if driving without halts. Otherwise, this leg will take a couple of days, making the entire India to Bali road trip an 8-day affair.

One must keep in mind the requirement of travel insurance and visa formalities when crossing borders at multiple places. Also, the vehicle will need to have the requisite permissions. Besides, drivers will have to apply for an IDP (International Driving Permit) ahead of the trip and carry that along with their original Indian driving license.

Visiting Bali from various Indian Cities

Whether you take your car or a flight, it is possible to get to Bali from almost every Indian city. While some have easier connectivity, smaller cities can easily find a route to Bali, even if it takes a bit longer.

Delhi to Bali

Bali is about 5,829 km from New Delhi – the capital of India. The most hassle-free way to travel from Delhi to Bali is to take a flight. There are no direct flights between Delhi and Denpasar, but you will find plenty of flight options with a one layover.

The cheapest one-way air ticket will cost almost INR 20,000 – operated by Malindo Air, with a halt in Kuala Lumpur – the capital of Malaysia. If you are looking for the fastest connection, Singapore Airlines offers the shortest journey of 9 hours and 20 minutes with a stopover in Singapore.

If you plan to take the road instead, enjoy the thrill of driving on the newly constructed India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway (IMT). While some portions of this are still under development, the road connectivity is excellent.

Mumbai to Bali

Mumbai to Bali has the shortest flight time and more flights to choose from. The fastest that you can fly to Denpasar from Mumbai is 10 hours and 35 minutes when you take Malindo Air. Pick from a number of airlines that offer journeys with one layover or 2 layovers.

The cheapest one-way ticket from Mumbai to Denpasar will set you back by INR 22,000. While average rates hover around the INR 25,000 to INR 35,000 range, more expensive routes are available in case you have a favourite airline that you must fly with.

Airline which fly the Mumbai to Bali route (including code sharing arrangements) are Malindo Air, Singapore Airlines, Silkair, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, SriLankan Airlines, Emirates, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Air India, Garuda Indonesia and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Mumbai will soon have a cruise terminal and a cruise option to Bali that is under discussion at the moment. Seafarers will also get a glimpse of the ports of Goa, Kochi and Andaman and Nicobar Islands before they arrive at Tanjung Benoa cruise port – the main port on the island of Bali.

If you are planning to drive up to Bali, the shortest land route goes through the Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and the North Eastern belt of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.

Thereafter, you will pass border control when you enter Myanmar. Your passport will be examined and stamped again in Thailand, then in Malaysia and Singapore. The road connectivity ends here, and one has to take a ferry from Singapore to Indonesia, Jakarta to be specific. The remaining road journey to Bali takes 23 hours more.

Bangalore to Bali

The aerial distance from Bangalore to Bali is 4,851 km. The shortest flight between the two destinations is operated by Singapore Airlines, with a layover at Singapore. With a total duration of 9 hours and 25 minutes, this is also the cheapest flight at INR 24,000 per ticket for a single journey.

The average economy class one-way airfare from Bengaluru to Bali is INR 30,000. However, some connections cost over INR 50,000. Airlines that ply on this route are Silkair, Singapore Airlines, Air India, SriLankan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Garuda Indonesia.

If one wants to drive all the way from Bangalore to Bali, the total distance will be over 9,500 km. The non-stop journey duration will be more than 200 hours, while a reasonable estimate, including time for rest, meals and night halts, will turn out to be at least 12 days.

The journey will take the driver through the Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.

The rest of the journey will involve border crossings at India – Myanmar border, Myanmar – Thailand border, Thailand – Malaysia border and Malaysia – Singapore border. Thereafter, a ferry will have to be taken to Jakarta where your passport will be stamped again. The last bit of the journey will involve a 23-hour drive to Bali.

Chennai to Bali

Chennai, the capital of the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is 4,554 km away from Bali. The cheapest way to travel from Chennai to Bali is to fly down to Denpasar. In fact, this is the Indian city that has the shortest flight from India to Bali . At 7 hours and 55 minutes, Singapore Airlines flies its passengers for just INR 22,000 per person for the economy seats.

Average flight prices from Chennai to Denpasar are around INR 25,000 to INR 30,000 for each way, whereas the average journey time is 15 to 20 hours for single layover flights. For 2 or more layovers, the journey time goes beyond 20 hours.

The driving time from Chennai to Bali is 203 hours. This excludes time for rest, pit stops and meals. However, the time is inclusive of the ferry which is to be taken from Singapore to Jakarta. The coastal road from Chennai that runs along the east cost of India, is a beautiful one – offering gorgeous views of the Bay of Bengal.

The route passes through the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. Later on, you cross the ASEAN countries Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore before ferrying off to Indonesia.

Kolkata to Bali

Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is 4,534 km away from Bali. The fastest Kolkata to Bali flight is under 9 hours, being the cheapest one also, at INR 21,000 per economy class seat. While this flight is operated by Singapore Airlines, you can choose other carriers like Silkair, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Air India, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia and Etihad.

The average flight duration from Kolkata to Denpasar is about 20 hours, including layovers, while the average cost of an economy seat on a one-way flight is INR 40,000. Layovers are usually in the cities of Singapore, Dhaka, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Mumbai, Jakarta, Dubai and Chennai.

If you’re driving to Bali, it will take 170 hours from Kolkata without any stops. You will cross the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. The road trip will then turn international as you cross over to Myanmar before passing through Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

Cross the Java Sea and reach Jakarta via ferry. The final road journey will be 23 hours without stops as you arrive in Bali. Your passport will be stamped by 5 foreign countries as you go on this long road trip.

Hyderabad to Bali

Almost 5,000 km away from Bali, Hyderabad has few flights connecting the two destinations. It takes at least 9 hours and 20 minutes to fly to Denpasar from the capital of Telangana, with one halt minimum.

The cheapest airfare can be found for Malaysia Airlines – INR 26,500 for a one-way economy class ticket from Hyderabad to Bali . On an average, it takes 20 to 30 hours to fly between the two cities while the average economy class tickets cost between INR 50,000 and INR 70,000.

Airlines that fly from Hyderabad to Denpasar are Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, Air India, Singapore Airlines, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Silkair and Garuda Indonesia. Layovers are generally in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, Doha, Ho Chi Minh City, Chennai, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bhubaneswar.

Driving from Hyderabad to Bali will take 193 hours without breaks. You will be crossing almost 9,000 km, including a short ferry ride through the Java Sea. Within India, you will have to drive across the states of Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. You will pass through international border control while entering, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and finally, Indonesia.

Ahmedabad to Bali

Ahmedabad and Bali are separated by 9,249 km. The cheapest flight from Ahmedabad to Denpasar will cost INR 24,000 while taking 9 hours and 40 minutes to reach. This is the shortest duration you can expect where the average duration is over 20 hours.

Airlines that fly from Ahmedabad to Bali are Silkair, Singapore Airlines, Air India, SriLankan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines, EVA Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Garuda Indonesia. Since there are no direct flights, layovers can be in cities such as Singapore, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Dubai, Doha, New Delhi, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei.

Driving down instead? Budget for approximately 9,137 km of journey that will take more than 194 hours without any breaks. The Indian states that you will have to drive through are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur. Keep your passport, IDP and other documents ready for crossing international borders at Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Goa to Bali

While both Goa and Bali are famous beach destinations, they are 2,851 nautical miles or 5,281 km apart. In addition to the fact that Goa has no direct flights to Denpasar, there also are no flights with a single layover.

One must endure two or more stopovers to reach Bali from Goa. Every flight that leaves from Goa to Bali first halts at Mumbai. Expect onward layovers in Singapore, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Bangkok, Colombo and Jakarta.

The cheapest one-way ticket from Goa to Denpasar costs INR 29,000 while the average price is INR 45,000. The shortest route will take just over 18 hours, while most other routes take over a day. Airlines that connect Goa and Denpasar are Air India, Singapore Airlines, Silkair, SriLankan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Garuda Indonesia.

If you are planning to drive from Goa to Bali, the total distance works out to be more than 9,500 km, taking more than 206 hours of non-stop travel. Indian states you will cross are Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.

You will be able to drive across the IMT (India – Myanmar – Thailand) Trilateral Highway, only parts of which are complete. Thereafter, the drive will take you to Malaysia and Singapore, where you will have to ditch the car for a ferry to Jakarta. The final drive to Bali will take another 23 hours of non-stop driving.

Pune to Bali

Pune is 5,433 km away from Denpasar International Airport . The connectivity between Pune and Bali is not very good. One must take a flight with at least 2 layovers, the first being in New Delhi. The shortest flight will take 22 hours and 50 minutes while the average journey time is 40 hours.

Flights from Pune to Bali are also relatively expensive, with one-way fares starting from INR 33,000. Average flight cost for a single journey on economy class will easily cost over INR 40,000.

Airlines that connect Pune and Denpasar are Air India, Singapore Airlines, Silkair, Cathay Pacific, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Garuda Indonesia. Layovers are most likely to be in New Delhi, Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok.

Driving from Pune to Bali will take almost 200 hours of non-stop journeying. The total distance you must cover is about 9,150 km. Indian states you will drive past are Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland and Manipur.

For the international leg of the journey, you must possess all the visas, international driver’s permit and your passport, apart from travel insurance and other documents required by each country on the route.

Cochin to Bali

Cochin is 4,886 km away from Bali and the shortest flight route takes 13 hours and 55 minutes. Due to the lack of good connectivity, the cheapest air ticket comes for almost INR 48,000. Average journey duration from Cochin to Bali is 24 hours whereas average airfare is INR 60,000. A road trip from Kochi to Bali will take 212 hours to cross the 10,100 odd kilometres between the two destinations.

Nagpur to Bali

Nagpur is about 5,000 km away from Bali but has no flight connections on the same PNR. You will have to book your flights separately to any Indian city that can fly you to Ngurah Rai International Airport . Cost and travel time will depend on the internal as well as international flight connections.

If you will drive from Nagpur to Bali , you will have to cross almost 8,500 km which will take at least 185 hours of non-stop travel. Keep your travel documents in order as they can be checked at multiple border-crossings along the route.

Surat to Bali

Surat is about 5,700 km away from Bali, but there are no flights connecting the two places. You must travel ahead to any Indian city with a flight connection to Denpasar International Airport and take a suitable flight.

Surat offers an interesting road trip to Bali as you cross 9,136 km of roadways that involve state highways, national highways, expressways and international roads. Non-stop driving and taking a ferry where the road ends (between Singapore and Jakarta) will take you almost 200 hours.

India & Bali’s Currency

Rupee is the official currency of India, denoted by Re, Rs, ₹ or INR. Since Bali is a province in Indonesia, it uses the Indonesian rupiah which is represented as Rp or IDR. Banknotes are available in the denominations of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 75,000 and 1,00,000 while coins in circulation are of the denominations 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000.

Accepted Currencies in Bali

Indonesian rupiah is accepted everywhere in Bali, but it is not a reserve currency, and can be procured only once you enter Indonesia. You can carry your cash in US dollars or Australian dollars which offer the best value in exchange. In fact, most hotels in Bali publish their rates in USD.

Other reserve currencies like Pounds and Euros can also be changed into the local currencies, but at unfavourable rates. When travelling from India, it will be easier to change your INR into USD which can be carried to Bali and then exchanged into IDR.

Average Conversion Rate

For most transactions in Bali, it is recommended to carry cash as credit cards may not be accepted everywhere. Some relevant currency conversion rates are below ( as of March 2021 ):

After dark, the town comes alive with bustling nightlife , including beachfront bars and clubs where you can dance the night away.

2. Tanah Lot

Situated on a large rock, Tanah Lot is one of the most famous Hindu temples in Bali. It has been a part of Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple is one of 7 sea temples, each within eyesight of the next, to form a chain along the south-western coast of Bali.

Tanah Lot is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali and the whole area can be very busy, especially in the late afternoons and before sunset. The area between the car park and the beach adjacent to the temple is a maze of souvenir shops selling just about every Balinese trinket imaginable.

Once visitors have fought their way through the souvenir vendors to the beach, they will see the magnificent temple perched on a rock just a few meters offshore. The natural beauty of the surroundings, with the temple silhouette against the ocean backdrop, creates a truly mesmerizing scene.

Perched among the terraced rice fields that climb up the foothills of Bali’s central mountains, Ubud is considered the island’s cultural heart. Ubud is home to the island’s most important museums, including the Neka Art Museum with its expansive collection of Balinese paintings. There are dance and music performances every day throughout the city as well as numerous art galleries and craft shops to explore.

Although Ubud has long been valued as a great place to learn about Balinese culture, tourism in Ubud boomed exponentially after it was featured in the book and movie “Eat, Pray, Love.” Fortunately, it only takes a short walk or bicycle ride to escape from the crowds and commercialism.

great information. I’m from southern Bali, yesterday I came to Sekumpul waterfall, the view was very nice, located in the countryside. Even though I had to go down the stairs, after arriving at the location it felt cool.

I am scheduling a 10 day trip to Bali. I can’t wait to visit these amazing places. I found a resort that I would love to lodge. However, I am not sure how close it is to everything that you mentioned in this article. The resort is called Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort.

I was in central Kuta in January of 2014 and near by beach was completely covered in garbage. Locals say it’s only seasonal and that it comes from Java. I hope nobody else will be disappointed like I was. Otherwise cool place that could use some sidewalks.

Tirta Gangga water palace is also a great place to visit in Bali. Btw, stay over night (or even for two nights) on Lembongan is recommended. You can explore the island, do more water sports and visit Ceningan.

BALI CULTURE & TRADITIONS- WHAT TO EXPECT

Despite the fact that most of the places in Indonesia have Muslims in the majority, Bali, on the other hand, follows Hinduism. Around 83.5 % of the Bali population follows Balinese Hinduism. Others are Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam.

Balinese people respect their culture and tradition and they are proud of it. In Bali, wherever you go, you’ll see the temples, rituals, ceremonies, and sacred offerings.

They are very well connected with their beliefs in gods and still manages to protect their original tradition for thousands of years.   

It is also mandatory to wear a sarong for men and women when you enter the temple. 

Canang Sari- The sacred offering

  The offering is a daily tradition of Balinese people and you can find these offerings in front of shops, homes, temples, on grounds. This is their way of thanking God. Remember not to step on the offerings.

Balinese Dance

Watching Balinese dance will leave you awestruck. They beautifully their culture with dance and music.

The Kecak dance in Uluwatu Temple Amphitheater Jimbaran is one of the best places to enjoy Balinese dance. The other theaters where these dances are performed: Dedan show at the Nusa Dua Theater, Kampoeng Bali at RIMBA Jimbaran, etc.

Languages in Bali 

 There are two languages spoken in Bali. One is the local Balinese language and the other one is Indonesian Bahasa. Places like Ubud, North Bali, and in a village part of Bali, people speak the Balinese language.

On the other hand, people in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu speak Indonesian Bahasa. Some basic words are:

• Hello- Swastyastu
• Thank You- Suksma
• You’re Welcome- Rahajeng Rauh
• I’m sorry- Ampura

HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED FOR BALI?

The average cost for the 7 day trip to Bali will cost anywhere between INR 50,000 to 60,000 including flights, accommodation, hotels, food, and sightseeing.

However, you can easily spend more or less. As compared to other places, Bali is very affordable.  

HOW LONG TO VISIT BALI?

Bali is approximately 5,800 square km in size. Driving from Uluwatu, the southern part of Bali to Ubud, the central part of Bali can take 2-3 hours depending on traffic.

From Ubud to Lovina at Northern Bali, it can take around 3.5 hours- 3 hours drive and again depending on the traffic.

From Seminyak in the west to Sanur in the east, it can take around a 1-hour drive.  I have spent 14 days to get a real taste of Bali. So, the answer to this question totally depends on you. 

PROS AND CONS OF BALI

• Friendly locals- The Balinese people are very friendly, kind, and they always have a smile on their face. Don’t expect a lot of Balinese people in the streets of Kuta or Seminyak. The streets of these places are full of foreigners. 
• Food- The varieties of foods available in Bali are incredible. 
• Cost of living- The cost of living in Bali is low and therefore, it is in a bucket list of every budget travelers.    
• Its serene beauty- You must have seen the Bali pictures on Instagram, but trust me those are nothing compared to actually visiting Bali. 

Cons  

• Impact of Tourism- While walking down the streets of Kuta, locals try to sell their stuff, they force you to come to their restaurants, forcing you to take photos with a man in a superhero costume and then threatening you to give money. I find this part of Bali very different from other parts of Bali i.e, Ubud, Singaraja, Lovina, etc. I didn’t find Kuta a real Bali.
• Pushy local- This is similar to the above-mentioned points. The shopkeepers will force you to visit their shop. This happens with us once in the Ubud street market. We visited a shop and we didn’t find anything interesting. So we left. The lady got angry at us and started throwing tantrums about us. 
• Traffic- Getting from one place to another in Bali requires a lot of patience. The roads are filled with scooters, cars, and buses. However, north Bali is less crowded than other parts of Bali. 
• Jam-packed Beaches- The beaches in Kuta were so crowded. Therefore, I just enjoyed the sunset there. 

BALI FOR INDIANS

Bali has become one of the most preferred honey destinations and is continued to be the most popular destination among Indians. The number of Indians arriving in Bali is increasing year after.

There are various reasons why Indians choose Bali as a primary destination and some of them are:

• Flights from India are frequent and affordable.
• You do not require a visa for Bali.
• Availability of low-budget hotels to private villa or resorts
• The people in Bali are also Hindu and are very friendly, so it makes Indians more comfortable.
• Indian foods are easily available at various restaurants.

 BALI ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

1. electricity.

The electricity in Bali runs 220V. Bali uses a 2 pin socket. Therefore, you can buy the adaptor before going to Bali but if in any case, you forgot to bring, you can easily buy there at a very cheap price.

However, there are many hotels and private resorts/villas, can provide you if you ask for one. 

2. Internet  

The Internet in Bali is surprisingly very strong and reliable. You will find wifi in every cafes, restaurant, and bar.  

3. Bali Visa Information  

Indonesia provides a free visa for 169 countries and India is one of them. You can travel to Bali without any hassle for up to 30 days.

Therefore, if you’re traveling for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, you do not require a visa.

But, you must provide valid return tickets, a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months, and sufficient funds for your expenses during your stay in Indonesia and get visa exemption Stamps from the immigration counter.  

On the other hand, if you’re planning to visit Bali for up to 60 days, there is an option of visa on arrival where you have to pay an amount of INR 2493 per person.

It is valid for 30 days, however, it can be extended for another 30 days by paying an additional amount of INR 3205.

4. Currency exchanges & scams

Bali is a safe island. However, there are many scams happening in Bali and the money changer scam is one of them. The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR) which comes in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20000, 50,000 and 100,000 which can be very confusing.

Kuta and Seminyak are such places where currency exchange scams happen as they are the touristy areas. Therefore, always look out for authorized money changers.

We went to Bali’s top changer in Seminyak.

If you want, you can convert the currency before going to Bali as well or if you’re okay, you can come with the debit card or credit card as well with little cash. Various restaurants or shopping complexes accept credit cards with a 2-3% surcharge.

There are various ATMs where you can withdraw your money.

There are various factors through which you can which identify the authorized money changers such as:  

• They have UV light counterfeit detection.
• They have a sign posted which indicates that you can’t wear helmets, sunglasses, masks or caps.
• They will do the counting in front of you.

BEST TIME TO VISIT BALI

Although Bali has a tropical climate all throughout the year and can be visited and can be visited anytime, however the best time to visit Bali is from April to October.

Bali in Dry Season  

Summer season is considered to be the dry season and the busiest season in Bali. From April to October, the weather is good and sunny with clear skies. If you’re a beach person this place is a perfect destination for you to visit during these months with less rain on islands, sunny days and the lowest humidity.

In addition to that, summer is the best season to enjoy outdoor activities such as trekking, scuba diving, surfing, cycling, snorkeling, etc. The Bali Arts Festival, which is held in June and July is popular in the country and should not be missed by art lovers.

The Bali Kite Festival is yet another one of the most popular festivals in Bali, where people celebrate the traditional art of Balinese kite making.

Furthermore, Galungan is the most important festival in Bali, where people celebrate the victory of Dharma over Adharma. As it is the busiest time of the year, don’t forget to book your hotels in advance. 

Bali in Wet Season

Bali wet season falls between November to March and there is a lot of humidity in the air. This time of the year, Bali experience rainfall, which restricts o various outdoor activities.

However, you can also enjoy a relaxing spa day and local indoor activities. As these months are the wet season, Bali is less crowded and you may get everything at a lower price.

This is the best time to enjoy white water rafting, jungle trek, and Canyoning. One of the largest yoga festivals, Bali Spirit Festival takes place every year around March/April in Ubud. 

HOW TO REACH BALI FROM INDIA?

 by air.

The cheapest and fastest way to reach Bali from India is by Air. Ngurah Rai International Airport is the main airport in Bali, which is 13 km south of Denpasar and has frequent flights from major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

There are no direct flights, therefore, all the airlines have a layover in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok. If you book your flight tickets 5-6 months in advance, you can get a great deal and discount. Air Asia is considered to be one of the cheapest flights from India.

If you’re on a budget trip I would recommend you to opt for Air Asia, hence I would prefer Malaysian Airlines. 

HOW TO GET AROUND IN BALI?  

In Bali, going from one place to another can take time because of the traffic. There are a lot of options available to get around Bali.

1. Rent a bike or a moped

If you’re comfortable riding a bike or moped, I would recommend you to rent one as it is a cheaper option. It can cost anywhere around IDR 42,000 per day.

However, if you want to travel a longer distance for instance, if you want to travel from Ubud (central Bali) to Singaraja (North Bali) then hire a taxi. 

Things to keep in mind while riding a motorbike or moped:

• Make sure you get an International driving license
• Always wear helmet
• Don’t drink and drive

 2. Use the ride-hailing Apps

Gojek and Grab have become the 2 dominant ride-hailing apps and has become popular in Bali. They are super affordable and easily available.

You just have to install these ride-sharing apps and you’re good to go. Grab app is just like Uber whereas, in Gojek, you can order a ride on a scooter.

3. Hire a Taxi  

Bluebird taxis are the most trustworthy tax services in Bali. They are safe and goes by the meter. Just like Grab, Bluebird has an app that you can download and pay via credit card.

Make sure you don’t get confused by other blue taxis. The bluebird taxis have written Bluebird on them. 

4. Rent a car and a driver

We find it an easy way to get around in Bali as we wanted to move on our own pace. We hire a car and a driver for 10 hours for IDR 5,50,000. You can also hire a car and drive it yourself. Similar to India, Bali is a right-hand drive. 

5. Taking shuttle buses

With tourist shuttle bus services, you can travel from one point to another at a very affordable price. You can buy the tickets from Kura-Kura ticket booths or on the bus. The bus route includes stops in Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Legian, and Sanur.

BALI ATTRACTIONS AND EXPERIENCES

Bali is a land of temples and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is one of them. The temple is built in 17th-century and is one of the most popular temples in Bali.

A large number of tourists visit all around the year. Located about 1200 meters above sea level in Lake Beratan, it has the most flawless views north Bali surrounded by natural beauty.

Entrance Fee- 50,000 IDR

Vehicle Parking- Free

Timing- 7:00 Am – 7:00 Pm

2. Kintamani and Mount Batur viewpoint 

If you’re looking for some adventure in Bali, then you must head to Mount Batur which is 1,700 meters above sea level and is situated in Kintamani. Mount Baur is one of the most popular and active volcanoes in Bali and you can take a tour to the top just to get a spectacular view of the sunrise.

The trek usually starts at 4 am and you have to get a guide to go there. The mountain is encircled with the beautiful lake which makes the sunrise even more astonishing.

When you reached the top, the locals serve you the eggs for breakfast boiled in the volcano.  

However, if you can’t trek to the peak, head over to Mount Batur’s viewpoint which is located at the western edge of Mount Batur and mesmerize the beauty of it while sipping a cup of coffee.

3. Gitgit Waterfall

About 300 meters above sea level, Gitgit waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls and one of the most Instagram worthy places visited by tourists. Gitgit waterfall is located in Gitgit Village, Singaraja and is surrounded by lush green jungle and clove plantation.

Even though this place is a little touristy, the Gitgit waterfall is worth a visit. The Gitgit waterfall consists of 3 waterfalls.  I will take around 15 minutes to reach the waterfall. There are toilets and changing facilities at the base of the waterfall. 

Entry Fee- IDR 20,000

Timing- Open from 7:00 AM

Parking- Free

4. Sekumpul Waterfall

Locally known as Air Terjun Sekumpul, Sekumpul Waterfall has been yet another most popular waterfall in Bali. There are three ways through which you can enter to Sekumpul waterfall- view only, medium trekking, and long trekking.

In recent times, the entrance fee of the Sekumpul waterfall as been increased to support the local economy, to maintain infrastructure, and to respect local customs. Moreover, it has become mandatory to hire a guide when you’re paying your visit to the waterfall. 

View Only- The “view only” entry fee is IDR 20,000 per person where it allows to see Sekumpul waterfall only

Medium Trekking- The entry fee is IDR 125,000 per person which includes a guide, donation to the local village, and you’’ visit Sekumpul and other hidden waterfalls. 

Long Trekking- The entry fee is IDR 2,00,000 per person which includes a guide, donation to the local village, and you’ll get to visit Sekumpul waterfall, hidden waterfalls, and triple-falls of Fiji waterfall.

5. Air Panas Banjar Hot Spring

Experience a truly Balinese culture by bathing with the locals at Air Panas Banjar Hot spring. Located in the hills of Banjar village, the water of Air Panas Banjar Hot spring is considered as “holy” by locals.

The temperature of the water is 38 degrees Celsius.  It makes the water very pleasant for the relaxation. It gives you water massage and recreational experience.

There are changing rooms where you can change. There are various souvenirs shops and restaurants as well. 

Entry Fee – IDR 5,000

Entry Time- 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

6. Lovina Beach

Lovina beach is the primary attraction of North Bali. There are various things you can do at Lovina beach, for instance, watch the sunrise go for snorkeling and diving, etc.

The main attraction at Lovina beach is watching Dolphin. It is popularly known for early-morning boat trips to see the dolphins. 

Attractions in South Bali

1. tanah lot.

Tanah lot is one of the most iconic temples in Bali located around 20 km northwest of Kuta. The temple is popular because of its unique and amazing seashore setting on a rocky island.

Built-in the 16th century, Tanah lot is one of the most sacred, largest, and holiest Hindu temples for the Balinese people.  

In addition to that, there are a lot of souvenir shops and restaurants to the onshore site. Spend some relaxing time in some of the restaurants watching sunsets.  

Entrance fee- IDR 60,000

2. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

Located at Ungasan, Badung, Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park or GWK is devoted to the Hindu God Vishnu and his mount Garuda, a mythological bird who became his companion. 

It has an area of about 60 hectares and is located at an altitude of 263 meters above sea level. There is a monumental statue of Garuda Wisnu standing about 276 meters above the sea level.  

There is a statue of Garuda bird, lotus Pond, Garuda cinema, and Wisnu plaza where various traditional Balinese arts are performed. 

Entry Fee- IDR 125,000. An additional fee of IDR 200,00 if you want to enter the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue.

Entry Time- 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM

3. Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

The Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is a Balinese Hindu sea temple and is located in Uluwatu. The temple is nestled at the edge of a 230 feet cliff or rock with a view of the Indian ocean.

This temple is considered to be the symbol of spiritual beliefs for Balinese. To enter, you’ll have to wear a sarong.

Here are various reasons why you should visit the Uluwatu Temple.

• The Sunsets at Uluwatu temple are magical.
• The famous Kecak dance portrays the Ramayana. It starts from 6:00 Pm to 7:00 PM. To reserve the seat make sure you arrive early. 
• Explore the architectural temple

Entry Fee- IDR 50,000

To watch Kecak Dance- IDR 100,000

Entry Time- 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

4. South Bali beaches

Spend some time of the day relaxing at the beach or just head over to the beach for a spectacular view of the sunset. On my trip to Bali, I spend an evening watching the most beautiful sunset at Seminyak Beach.

Head over to any of the beaches in South Bali such as Nusa Dua beach, Bingin Beach, Dreamland Beach, Balangan beach, Seminyak beach, Kuta Beach, etc., and spend quality time there just relaxing. I find Bali beaches very crowded, especially Seminyak and Kuta beach.  

Attractions in Central Bali

1. goa gajah cave.

Locally known as Goa Gajah, Elephant Cave Temple is an archaeological site and the popular tourist attraction in Bali. It has temples, fountains, and ponds. A perfect place for people who want to learn more about Indonesian architecture as the cave represents the carvings and the stone works in a comprehensive manner.    

In addition to that, there is an idol of Lord Ganpati and 3 Lingams which represent Lord Shiva and Shakti. 

Entrance fee- IDR 15,000 per person

2. Monkey Forest

The most popular tourist attractions in Ubud, the sacred Monkey Forest is a rainforest and is home to monkeys, ponds, banyan trees, and flowing streams.

There are more than 600 monkeys and over 115 species of different kinds of trees in the forest. Be careful and follow rules to avoid any kind of difficulty. 

Entrance Fee- IDR 80,000 per person

Timing- 8:00am – 6:00pm

3. Tegenungan waterfall

Just like temples, Bali is home to a number of waterfalls. Tegenungan waterfall is located 12 km away from The Monkey forest. As it is close to Ubud, expect a lot of crowds. However, it is definitely worth the visit because of its mesmerizing beauty. 

4. Tegalalang and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Tegalalang rice terrace is located in Bali and has one of the most magnificent beauty. The perfect landscape makes it the most famous spot for photographs. There are various stalls lined up along the roadside selling handicrafts. 

On the other hand, the Jatiluwih rice terrace is around 40 km from Ubud. It is beside the hillsides of Mount Batukaru making the view breathtaking.

As compared to the Tegalalang rice terrace, Jatiluwih rice is less crowded and you can easily explore the place without any hassle.

5. Abian Kusuma Sari Coffee Plantation  

Pay your visit to an Abian Kusuma Sari coffee plantation to experience more about Balinese and coffee production and enjoy one of the most expensive coffees “Kopi Luwak coffee”. Also, get to experience the famous Bali swing adventure.

6. Bali Bird & Reptile Park

Bali Bird & Reptile Park is home to more than 1000 birds and is located 13 km away from the Goa Gajah Temple. Head over to the park early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

The park is properly maintained and you can feed the birds as well. 

Right next to the bird park, there is a reptile park that has a variety of reptiles for instance lizards, snakes, and alligators.  

WHERE TO STAY IN BALI?

Bali truly is a paradise. Deciding where to stay in Bali is not just picking any hotel or resort. There are a lot of options available in various areas to experience the magical beauty of Bali.

• If you’re a beach lover then head over to Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, or Nusa Dua. In addition to that Kuta and Seminyak are known for their fabulous nightlife. This place is full of nightclubs, high-end resorts, bars, shopping malls, etc. There are a lot of accommodation options at a good price right by the beach. Some of the best hotel or resort options are Bali Bobo in Kuta, Amnata Resort in Kuta, Seminyak beach resort, Samabe Bali Suites & Villas in Nusa Dua, and The Janan Villa in Sanur.
• On the contrary, Ubud is famous for its rice terrace, temples, Yoga, Boutique shops, Balinese art & craft, and Balinese culture. Ubud is considered to be the true essence of Bali. Best hotels and resorts in Ubud are Den Den Mushi Homestay, Hotel Puriartha, and Bambu Indah resort.
• My personal recommendations are Sanglung Villa in North Bali for a calm and relaxing vacation, experience the open-air bamboo house in the middle of the jungle in Tabanan village, and sleep under the sky in a bubble hotel in Tampaksiring. There are various booking options available, but prefer booking from Airbnb. 

WHERE TO EAT IN BALI?

In Bali, you can find varieties of food which include Indian food as well. There are tons of restaurants serving Indian food. But I recommend trying local authentic foods. 

• Nasi Campur- Rice served with mixed vegetables, fish or meat. You can have it at Warung Wardani in Denpasar. 
• Nasi Goreng- One of the most popular dishes of Bali. It is so popular that you can see it on the breakfast menu as well.
• Mie Goreng- Similar to Nasi Goreng, instead of fried rice, it is fried noodles served with vegetables. You can have it in Cafe Kami in Seminyak.
• Pisang Goreng (Fried Bananas) – This is a type of desert where they fried bananas and served with honey or palm sugar syrup. You can find it in various restaurants and one of them is a Warung Classic in Munduk.
• We had a coffee at the Sari Mountain view restaurant at Kintamani with a mesmerizing view of Mount Batur. They also provide a buffet that costs IDR 3,00,000 for two people.

• Queen’s Tandoor in Seminyak- It is an amazing restaurant with beautiful decor served varieties of Indian food.  
• Indian Delites in Ubud- Along with North Indian foods, It serves delicious South Indian food as well.

• Beachwalk Mall- It is an open-air mall with direct access to Kuta beach. You’ll get various clothing brands such as Nike, Adidas, Marks & Spencer, etc. Besides clothing, it is a hub for eat and drink as well.

 NIGHTLIFE IN BALI

Besides culture, tradition, temples, food, Bali is also famous for its nightlife. There are people who come to Bali only for nightlife and if you’re one of them, head over to Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu.

The best nightclubs in Bali are in South Bali. According to locals, Kuta has become mini Australia. 

• Seminyak – Seminyak is the most popular place among party lovers. Some of the famous clubs are Potato Head Beach Club, KU DE TA, The Orchard Bar, La Favela, etc.
• Kuta- as mentioned above, Kuta is mini Australia and therefore it has become a huge party spot. You’ll get to see a lot of backpackers partying. The best clubs are Hard Rock Cafe, Sky Gardens, VH Bali, etc.
• Canggu- The most visited place by Digital Nomads, Canggu is the best place to get laid-back. Some of the best places are Old Man’s, Deus Cafe, The Sand Bar, Luigi’s Pizza, and more.

About 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot ("Pura" means temple in Balinese) is one of Bali's most iconic temples. Its spectacular seaside setting, on a rocky islet surrounded by crashing waves, is a major wow factor.

For the Balinese people, it is one of the most sacred of all the island's sea temples. Every evening, throngs of tourists from Kuta, Legian, and Sanur find their way through a labyrinth of lanes lined by souvenir sellers to watch the sun setting behind the temple.

Pura Tanah Lot was built at the beginning of the 16th century and is thought to be inspired by the priest Nirartha, who asked local fishermen to build a temple here after spending the night on the rock outcrop.

Although foreigners can't enter any of the temples in the complex, you can walk across to the main temple at low tide. It's also fun to wander along the paths, taking photos and soaking up the magnificent setting.

From Tanah Lot, you can stroll along tropically landscaped pathways to beautiful Batu Bolong , another sea temple perched on a rock outcrop with an eroded causeway connecting it to the shore.

After viewing the various temples and shrines, save time to relax at one of the clifftop restaurants and cafés here and sample the famous Kopi luwak (civet coffee) . In some of the cafés, friendly civets snooze on the tables, offering fun Instagram-worthy photo ops.

When visiting any temples in Bali, be sure to dress respectfully, and wear a sarong and sash.

Every day in Bali's predawn darkness, hundreds of visitors begin the trek up the 1,700-meter summit of Mount Batur. Once at the top, they watch the sun rise above the lush mosaic of mist-shrouded mountains and the caldera far below. If you're looking for romantic things to do in Bali for couples, this should be top on your list.

This sacred active volcano lies in Kintamani District in Bali's central highlands, about an hour's drive from Ubud. The hike, along well-marked trails, is relatively easy and usually takes about two to three hours. Guided treks typically include a picnic breakfast, with eggs cooked by the steam from the active volcano. On a clear day, the views are spectacular, stretching all the way across the Batur caldera; the surrounding mountain range; and beautiful Lake Batur, the island's main source of irrigation water.

Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, and it's advisable to wear layers, as the temperature can be cool before sunrise.

You can also combine a trip here with a visit to one of Bali's most important temples, Pura Ulun Danu Batur, on the lake's northwest shore, and a therapeutic soak in hot springs at the beautiful village of Toya Bungkah on the banks of Lake Batur.

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of the Bali's most famous temples, thanks to its magnificent clifftop setting. It presides over plunging sea cliffs above one of Bali's best surf spots.

In Balinese, "Ulu" means "tip" or "land's end," and "Watu" means rock, a fitting name for the location of the temple on the Bukit Peninsula, along the island's southwestern tip. Like Pura Tanah Lot, sunset is the best time to visit , when the sky and sea glow in the late afternoon light.

Archaeological finds here suggest the temple is of megalithic origin, dating from around the 10th century. The temple is believed to protect Bali from evil sea spirits, while the monkeys who dwell in the forest near its entrance are thought to guard the temple from bad influences (keep your belongings securely stashed away from their nimble grasp).

A scenic pathway snakes from the entrance to the temple, with breathtaking viewpoints along the way. Only Hindu worshippers are allowed to enter the temple, but the beautiful setting and the sunset Kecak dance performances that take place here daily are more than worth the visit.

The temple lies about 25 kilometers from Kuta.

Visiting the Monkey Forest, also known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, is one of the top things to do in Ubud, Bali. It's also one of the best places to visit in Bali if you're an animal lover or photographer. You can walk here in about 10 minutes from the town center in Ubud.

Besides the entertaining troops of grey long-tailed macaques that make their home here, a large part of the appeal is the evocative jungle setting where the monkeys roam free. Paved pathways lead through thick forests of giant banyan and nutmeg trees, where moss-covered statues and ancient temples loom through the dense foliage, imparting an almost mystical feel.

The forest is intended to represent the harmonious coexistence between humans and animals. It also conserves rare plants and is used as a location for researching macaque behavior, particularly their social interaction.

On the southwest side of the forest is one of the three temples found here: the 14th-century Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal . Here, hundreds of monkeys swing through the trees and clamber over the walls.

In the northwest of the forest, an ancient bathing temple, Pura Beji , nestles next to a cool stream and makes a beautiful backdrop for watching the monkeys' antics.

While visiting the forest, make sure to secure your belongings, and avoid direct eye contact with the animals (and smiling), as this can be interpreted as a sign of aggression. It's also a good idea not to bring any food into the area.

Made famous by the book and movie Eat, Pray, Love , Ubud is also the epicenter of Balinese art and culture. This is where the modern Balinese art movement was born, with the surrounding royal palaces and temples acting as the main patrons.

Today, several excellent local museums and galleries celebrate its evolution and traditions. Art gazing is particularly rewarding here, as many collections are housed in traditional Balinese buildings surrounded by serene tropical gardens.

For an overview of Balinese art, your first stops should be Agung Rai Museum of Art ( ARMA) and the Neka Art Museum, which lie within a short stroll of the Ubud Monkey Forest. Collections at both include works ranging from traditional to contemporary, including kris (ceremonial daggers), photography, and classical wayang (puppet-figure) paintings.

Other art galleries and museums in the Ubud area that might be of interest to art lovers include Setia Darma House of Masks & Puppets featuring ceremonial masks from Asia and beyond; Museum Puri Lukisan, spanning a range of Balinese artistic styles; and the Don Antonio Blanco Museum, at the artist's former home and studio.

If shopping for art is more your style, don't miss the Ubud Art Market. This labyrinth of stalls brims with carvings, sculptures, jewelry, sarongs, paintings, and homewares and is one of the top tourist attractions in Ubud. Bargaining is essential, and a good rule of thumb is to counter with half the asking price and barter upwards from there, always with a smile.

Opposite the market, the Puri Saren Royal Ubud Palace is also worth a visit. Attending a traditional Balinese dance performance during the evening here is one of the top things to do in Bali at night – especially for families. The colorful costumes and hypnotic music will dazzle young and old. During the day, it's a beautiful place to photograph some of the architectural features, and stroll through the gardens.

Looking for things to do in Bali with kids to soak up the local culture? Sign up for an art workshop at a local village. Traditional painting, mask-making, and jewelry making are just some of the activities that might appeal to creative young minds.

Want to visit the beautiful emerald-hued rice fields that you see on all the Bali tourist brochures and Instagram posts? The Tegallalang or Jatiluwih rice terraces should be at the top of your sightseeing list — especially if you're a photographer.

About a 30-minute drive north of Ubud, Tegallalang Rice Terraces are one of the most famous areas to photograph these iconic landscapes and absorb their timeless beauty. Be aware that locals ask for donations along the most popular trail through the rice fields here, and many request fees for entrance and parking along the road. A relaxing way to enjoy the lush landscapes is at one of the many restaurants and cafés overlooking the fields.

About a 90-minute drive from Ubud, the Jatiluwih rice terraces cover more than 600 hectares of rice fields along the hillsides of the Batukaru mountain range and tend to be less crowded than Tegallalang. You'll also find fewer tourist touts here, so it's easier to walk around and explore without being hassled.

Both of these locations use the traditional water management cooperative called "subak," a UNESCO-recognized irrigation system that dates to the 9th century .

The 17th-century Pura Ulun Danu Bratan is one of Bali's most picturesque temple complexes. It sits on a small island along the western shore of Lake Bratan, in the cool highlands of central Bali. Set against the imposing backdrop of Gunung Bratan, the thatched temples reflect on the lake, and when the water levels rise, they seem to float on its surface.

Lake Bratan is one of Bali's main sources of irrigation and drinking water, and the temple complex is dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the sea and lakes.

An unusual feature is the Buddhist stupa on the left of the entrance to the first courtyard, with figures of Buddha meditating in the lotus position in niches on the square base. The stupa reflects the adoption of Buddhist beliefs by Balinese Hindus.

The best time to visit this sacred Hindu temple complex is early in the day, before the tourist buses arrive. The temple is especially picturesque in the soft morning light, when cool mist sometimes cloaks the lake and the mountains beyond. You can also hire a canoe and paddle out on the lake to explore the meru (thatched shrines) at close range.

Not far from the temple complex, the Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali) is also worth a visit, with its beautiful bamboo forests, begonias, orchid collection, and medicinal plants.

Bali is known for its flamboyant designers and fabulous shopping, and you'll find the best examples of Balinese design along the busy streets of Seminyak. Cutting-edge designer fashion, surf and swimwear, jewelry, furniture, and homewares are just some of the items you can buy at the chic shops and busy market stalls here.

Top boutiques include Biasa , Magali Pascal, and Bamboo Blonde . Sea Gypsy is a favorite for jewelry, and Drifter Surf Shop & Cafe offers a collection of surf and skateboard gear.

The two main shopping malls are Seminyak Square and Seminyak Village , but you'll probably find better deals in the smaller shops lining the streets.

Looking for a real bargain? Head to the Seminyak Flea Markets near Seminyak Square, where you'll find stalls crammed with clothing, jewelry, carvings, and handicrafts.

Seminyak is also home to some of Bali's best beach resorts, restaurants, and art galleries.

Want an escape from Bali's urban buzz? Nusa Dua Beach is your answer. Here, you can recline on a comfortable sun lounger, cool drink in hand, and listen to the gentle slosh of surf on silky, white sands. You won't get that cultural hit you'll find elsewhere in Bali – this is a gated resort area on its own private peninsula after all, but if it's peace and relatively pristine sands you seek, you'll find it here, at one of Bali's best beaches .

Some of Bali's best luxury beach resorts preside over this sweeping stretch of shore, and resort staff work hard to keep the sand clean and clear of trash. Popular things to do at Nusa Dua include strolling for miles along the shore, swimming, surfing, parasailing, and sunbathing, but you might need to pay a fee or eat at one of the resorts to use their sun loungers. Still, if you're after a top Bali beach experience, Nua Dua ticks the box.

When you tire of the beach, you can sign up for some pampering at a posh resort spa or browse the chic shops at Bali Collection, an open-air shopping mall. A paved promenade skirts the shore for off-sand strolling between the resorts and attractions. With all this relaxation on tap, no wonder Nusa Dua is one of the top places to visit in Bali for a honeymoon.

More than a thousand years old, Pura Besakih is known as the Mother Temple for a reason: It's the holiest Hindu temple complex in Bali – and the biggest.

Set in a spectacular location on the southern slopes of Mount Agung, at an altitude of 1,000 meters, Pura Besakih is actually a series of many different temples, which serve as the spiritual center for the Balinese people. Pura Penataran Agung is the largest.

Lush rice paddies and forests ring this temple complex, and many important festivals take place here; you might be lucky enough to see one during your visit.

Plan to spend about three hours touring the temples. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes – you'll need to walk a fair distance and climb many stairs.

Insider's Tip: Locals trying to sell sarongs, incense, guiding services, and various other items bombard visitors at the gates here, but your ticket includes everything that you'll need during your visit. The best time to visit Pura Besakih is early in the morning before the tourist buses arrive.

Craving a slower-paced Bali, without the crowds, traffic, and tourist touts? The Nusa Islands are where you'll find it. They are also a great place in Bali for couples who crave a little more serenity than they might find on the mainland.

The most popular of the three islands is Nusa Lembongan, about 20 kilometers offshore from Sanur and easily accessible by speedboat. Surfing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and stand up paddleboarding are the main activities here, and the top attractions include beautiful Dream Beach ; Mushroom Bay ; and the Devil's Tears rock outcrop, with views of crashing surf erupting over the rocks. Many locals still make their living from seaweed farming, and you can watch them harvesting it by the shore.

The neighboring island, Nusa Ceningan , lies just over a bridge from Nusa Lembongan, with a beautiful blue lagoon.

The largest of the island trio, Nusa Penida , is a quick boat ride away. Rock formations, caves, and a bird sanctuary are Nusa Penida's top draws, and diving is one of the most popular things to do here, with the chance to see manta rays, sunfish, and turtles. Don't miss the steep hike down to Kelinking Beach , also known as T-Rex Bay, to bask on your own slice of golden sand, backed by soaring sea cliffs – it's one of the top beaches in Asia .

Accommodation on the islands ranges from rustic huts to luxury villas.

Yes, it's crowded and persistent hawkers stalk the beach, but this famous stretch of sand, along with neighboring Legian and Seminyak Beaches just to the north, is one of the most happening places to visit in Bali. You'll have a fun day out here – especially if you're a beginner surfer or you just want to soak up the scene.

You can book surf lessons and rent surfboards, boogie boards, sun loungers, and umbrellas directly from vendors set up on the sand, and plenty of cafés and restaurants border the beach. Beach vendors are easily dissuaded with a polite "no thank you," but an icy cold coconut sloshing with juice served directly to your sun lounger can be a blessing on a sultry day.

Kuta Beach is one of the best places for young travelers who are looking for a livelier vibe than the sleepy beach resorts offer.

For a more peaceful slice of coast on the island, head to the soft sands of Sanur Beach , Jimbaran Beach, or Nusa Dua ( Geger Beach here has public access ) .
