The rock band HIM hails from Helsinki, Finland and was formed in 1991. Their music traverses several genres, including gothic rock and metal.

Originally known by its full name His Infernal Majesty (HIM), the group includes Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström, and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen. They recorded and released their first EP “666 Ways to Love: Prologue” in 1996 along with follow-up album “Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666” released on 7 November 1997 by Hiili Hiilesmaa. The triple sixes were a theme for the first album, which lasted 66:06 minutes long and contained 66 tracks. The cover single of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaack gained notable success in Europe.

HIM became popular in the States with their sophomore album “Razorblade Romance” in 2002 especially with the single “Join Me In Death” (or to avoid misinterpretations of suicide, it was known for short as “Join Me”). The band’s name however was changed to “HER” as “HIM” was already copyrighted by another band. “Razorblade Romance” was a favorite in Germany as well, reaching No. 1 in the charts.

HIM added another member, keyboard player Emerson Burton to the group for their third album “Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights” which was released 27 August 2001. Again, their music was recognized on the charts in Finland and Germany. The album “Love Metal” which came out in Europe in 2003 was the first album to feature their signature logo called a heartagram: a heart with a pentagram. The logo symbolizes the binary balance of light and dark, love and hate, and life and death.

The album “Dark Light” released in 2005 became the highest grossing album in the U.S. and the only Finnish band to be certified gold in the States. The video for the single “Killing Loneliness” has a cameo by tattoo artist Kat Von D. HIM cites The Doors, The Stooges and Black Sabbath as musical influences.

Live reviews

HIM are certainly titans of the emo rock genre, but their recognisability spans far beyond that scene, thanks in no small part to their striking name - it stands for His Infernal Majesty - as well as their signature ‘heartagram’ logo, which has made it as far afield as the video for ‘DARE’ by Gorillaz. They’ve been together for more than twenty years, and after a disagreement saw them leave Sire/Warner in 2011, the strength and size of their cult fanbase was enough to earn them a deal with another major almost immediately, signing with a subsidiary of Sony. Their first release on that imprint, Tears on Tape, met with some of the strongest reviews of their career last year, and saw them touring extensively, too; they played a long run of dates across the UK last October. The setlists spanned their entire career, with the Finns opting to dedicate pretty much equal prominence to each record rather than lean too heavily on Tears on Tape, although there was room for them to mix it up, too; bizarrely, they covered Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’. Earlier this month, an incendiary set at Sonisphere proved that they’re only picking up steam; they’ll continue to play European festivals throughout the summer.

Perhaps it is the dark winters and somber nature of the Scandinavians yet historically they have always been interested in metal and gloom rock. Finnish outfit HIM are one of the most successful bands to emerge from that part of the world with platinum selling albums across Europe. They have been touring relentlessly around the globe since the release of their debut album in 1997 and this huge dedication really pays off in their live show.

It is a huge operation now with carefully planned lighting displays and dark stage decorations to add to the overall somber overtone of the music. The songs still remain very much as the central driving force with a great mixture from the new record 'Tears on Tape' along with older material that the fans show their obvious adoration for. The band comments on the great energy demonstrated tonight as the fans jump, chant and mosh to the very final tone of 'The Funeral of Hearts'. The group dedicates the encore track 'When Love and Death Embrace' to the energetic audience.

I don't know how to describe all this spectrum of feelings I felt yesterday at Him's concert (Moscow Stadium) .. They were.. they are still so deep.

I was just mesmerized by their performance devouring every single sound (more! more! more!)

I want to thank the universe for giving us such a band, such a music. I hope it's not the end. It breaks the heart to think so.

And I'm listening to their recordings and drawing Ville. I need it, to give a way to my feelings.. I love Him deeply. Thank you!! Keep doing what you do and be inspired

It was amazing!! Great atmosphere, the staff at the place were organised and really helpful! It all went smooth and the concert... Just incredible! Of course if you came there to enjoy the music and see the one of the greatest singer, I was disappointed with the people around as most of them just stand there with their beers and phones, which was bizarre. If you're coming for a concert maybe at least look at the stage?

Anyway HIM I'll miss you guy!!

It was opening night in Phoenix of the tour. They had lots of sound problems. Vile I’m pretty sure couldn’t hear anything. He mumbled through most of the songs. Some Parts he didn’t even try to sing. We left before the concert was over. I hate to say it but it was boring. He lacks any real stage pressance. The guitarist, bassists, and drummer rocked.

I haven't discovered H.I.M until after the Scream works album. I always wanted to see H.I.M and I had to go to their farewell tour. This was my first and last time seeing them. I can only hope 1 person out of the band goes sole.

Oh my gosh amazing. Just go. Last chance to dance and it was awesome. Love the smaller venue shows because it's like you're right there with them. Plus, got to see the Linde guitar faces he makes. Made my year.

Finnish Goth-Metal Band HIM Bids Farewell to U.S. With New York City Tour Stop

Finnish goth-metal band HIM's farewell tour made a stop at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday night (Nov. 17).

Ville Valo of HIM performs in concert at sala Razzmatazz on June 14, 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.

After 20 years together, Finnish goth-metal band HIM is calling it quits. But before throwing in the towel, they’ve embarked on a farewell tour, which included a 19-date North American leg that ended at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday night (Nov. 17).

In a nod to the self-imposed send-off, the five-piece band — which categorizes their brand of rock as “love metal” and uses a fused heart and pentagram as their logo (aka a “heartagram”) — pumped the apropos “Bye Bye Love” by The Everly Brothers through the speakers before and after the show.

10 First-Timers on Billboard's Charts This Week: ILLIT, Love Fame Tragedy, Mark Ambor & More

While HIM never found mainstream success in the States — their best-known song, “Wings of a Butterfly,” peaked at No. 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006 — they have a devout following that packed the venue.

Trending on Billboard

Unfortunately, the venue did not do them justice. The show was marred with poor sound quality and a microphone malfunction that caused lead singer Ville Valo to grab his crotch, throw down the mic and walk offstage along with the rest of the band just eight songs in. After several minutes of confusion in the crowd, the band thankfully returned to meander through a 100-minute set that included at least one song from each of their eight studio albums.

Despite the show-stopping technical glitch, Valo was in good spirits, and he sounded good too. Fan favorites like “Butterfly,” “Join Me in Death” and “Right Here in My Arms” got the crowd pumping fists and jostling each other. At one point, a female fan apparently got aggressive in the crowd, and Valo once again stopped the show to tell her to calm down before adding, “We pay a lot of money to see catfights on TV, but this is not TV. It’s our last time in New York City … so, please.”

Heavy on older material, they performed only one song (“Heartkiller”) off 2010’s Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, their most commercially accessible and arguably best album, and just the title track off their most recent album, 2013’s Tears on Tape. There were also two covers: Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” (which featured a stellar guitar solo from Linde Lindstrom) and Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.”

Despite the air of excitement in the room (at times, fans were screaming so loud you couldn’t hear Valo’s between-song banter), there was also a tinge of solemness: No one wants to see their favorite band break up. Valo, who wore a form-fitting black suit and beanie, equated the night to “getting stoned at a funeral.” While the gathering wasn’t that solemn, people did fly in from around the country — and even the rest of the world — to see the show.

But unlike a funeral, never say never when it comes to a band breakup: In a recent interview, Valo left the door open for a future reunion, saying, “The good thing is there’s no drama, so it doesn’t hurt the chances.”

Finland's HIM Announces Farewell Tour: The Band 'Has Run Its Unnatural Course'

Following a long radio silence, Finnish rock giants HIM have announced a farewell tour, closing the final chapter on their 26-year career.

"After quarter of a century of love and metal intertwined, we sincerely feel HIM has run its unnatural course and adieus must be said in order to make way for sights, scents and sounds yet unexplored," says HIM frontman and main songwriter Ville Valo . "We completed the pattern, solved the puzzle and turned the key. Thank you."

Formed in 1991 by Valo , guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen , HIM truly stand out as one of the rock world’s most unique acts. Beautifully blending metal, goth and hard rock with deep, thoughtful and moving lyrics, HIM offered the world a new take on the metal genre, which became known as Love Metal (also the title of their fourth album).

Over the course of eight studio albums, HIM captured the hearts and minds of fans across the globe, drawn by their irresistible and inimitable style. Under the banner of their Heartagram logo – a potent symbol encapsulating the juxtaposition of the light and dark, the fierce and forlorn, and the evil and love found in their music — HIM filled venues and crashed charts the world over, collecting numerous awards, gracing countless magazine covers and becoming the first Finnish act to achieve gold status in the USA.

Now, four years after the release of their last studio album, "Tears On Tape" , HIM are saying farewell, taking in 14 countries across 35 shows for their final goodbye.

"At the end of 2017, we will be released into the wild," says Mige . "Before this event of great transformation, we would love to offer you one last chance to experience our live performances in His Majesty's service. It shall not be a weepfest but a celebration of love metal in all its lovecraftian glory! See you there!"

Catch HIM for the last time at one of the following shows:

Jun. 14 - Spain Barcelona Razzmatazz Jun. 15 - Spain Madrid La Riviera Jun. 16 - Spain Santander Sala Escenrio Jun. 17 - Portugal Porto Hard Club Jul. 01 - Finland Helsinki Tuska Festival Jul. 13 - Finland Tuuri Miljoonarock Nov. 24 - Russia St Petersburg Dk Lensoveta Nov. 25 - Russia St Petersburg Dk Lensoveta Nov. 26 - Russia Moscow Club Stadium Live Nov. 28 - Poland Warsaw Stodola Nov. 29 - Germany Hamburg Docks Dec. 01 - Germany Berlin Columbiahalle Dec. 02 - Czech Rep. Tickets go on general sale on Wednesday, March 8 at 9 a.m.

HIM in 2015 parted ways with its longtime drummer, Mika Kristian Karppinen (a.k.a. Gas Lipstick ),and replaced him with Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger (formerly of HERRA YLPPÖ & IHMISET ).

Valo told TeamRock in an interview that HIM is "always splitting up," explaining: "We're rather feisty. Especially because we're a band that tours a lot. We've done this for such a long time that you start thinking, 'This is everything — this is all.' You have to have those difficult moments. It's a reunion every time we enter our rehearsal place."

Ville also talked about HIM 's legacy, saying: "I'm proud to be friends with those guys who have supported me through many horrific and horrendous and wonderful years. That's my personal way of thinking about the legacy. It's fairly rare to live a life with your best mates, all around the world, experiencing all these wonderful and horrendous things, meeting great people, making new friends in far away countries. I certainly don't have the talents to become anything else anymore. That's all the brain damage I've done to myself."

Asked if there is ever a part of him that thinks, "I've done all I need to do. I can knock it on the head now," Ville said: "No. There are times when I get bored or when I feel repulsed when I see an acoustic guitar. After a long tour, or after an album, you can get a kind of musician's block. You think, 'Why the hell am I doing this? That's it, I'm done.' But then there are discussions that I can't have verbally — I can only have them musically. It's just that one melody, the one moment… It's a communication without words, and it's a communication with yourself, a kind of meditation. From within somewhere, you find these notes that take you into a headspace that you've never been before, or notes that take you to your childhood, or into autumn, or somewhere you've never been before. That's what makes music really interesting. For me, it's the hiding place, a way to get away. It's way better than booze and drugs."

HIM BANG & WHIMPER FAREWELL TOUR – WEEK 1

Finland’s most internationally successful band HIM are bringing their impressive 26 year career to an end on the Bang and Whimper tour. A heartbreaking and bittersweet road for dedicated HIM fans, the band has embarked on a path through 14 countries to bring love metal to their adoring audience one last time. From their beginning in 1991, HIM has gone on to enjoy tremendous success (going as far as to be the first Finnish band to ever reach Gold status in the United States), enamoring music enthusiasts all over the world for many, many years. With eight studio albums and countless exciting concerts, the time to say farewell has unfortunately come.

Father of the famous heartagram symbol and mastermind behind HIM, Ville Valo has enthralled the world with his passionate and metaphorical lyricism, partnered with exceptional musicianship that landed the band a significant spot in the history of rock music. Partnered with long-time HIM band members guitarist Mikko “Linde” Lindström, bassist Mikko “Migé” Paananen, Janne “Burton” Puurtinen, and brand new member Jukka “Kosmo” Kröger, the melodies brought forth by this impressive array of musicians have rooted itself into the deepest chambers of sentimentality. “ After quarter of a century of Love and Metal intertwined we sincerely feel HIM has run its unnatural course and adieus must be said in order to make way for sights, scents and sounds yet unexplored. We completed the pattern, solved the puzzle and turned the key. Thank you. ” Says frontman Ville Valo.

Senior journalist Anabel DFlux had the immense pleasure of accompanying the first week of the Bang and Whimper tour in the United States. Having photographed these Finnish lads many times over the years, it was certainly a humbling moment to capture the band’s final appearances on camera. The week began at The Van Buren in Pheonix, Arizona, before proceeding to two Los Angeles, California dates at the Wiltern Theater, and finally coming to the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. Joined by 3TEETH and CKY, the opening acts riled up the crowd before the love metal-er’s appearances.

Braving the intense heat in Arizona (quite the juxtaposition to the current snowstorm in their home country), HIM walked on to the stage to a roaring cheer. The set list for the tour runs through the band’s best-known tunes – the hits and the singles – allowing fans to reminisce on their favorite HIM music videos and memories. Although Mige said in the band’s official farewell statement “ it shall not be a weepfest but a celebration of love metal in all its lovecraftian glory! ”, fans found it hard to contain themselves during the performance and wept through several of their favorite songs. The emotional attachment this band wrought on those privy enough to adore the music is stronger than many anticipate.

The Van Buren Set List:

01. Buried Alive By Love 02. Heartache Every Moment 03. Your Sweet 666 04. The Kiss of Dawn 05. The Sacrament 06. Tears on Tape 07. Wings of a Butterfly 08. Gone with the Sin 09. Soul on Fire 10. Wicked Game 11. Killing Loneliness 12. Poison Girl 13. Bleed Well 14. Heartkiller 15. Join Me 16. It’s All Tears 17. In Joy and Sorrow 18. Right Here in my Arms 19. Funeral of Hearts

Encore: 20. Stigmata Diaboli 21. Pretending 22. When Love and Death Embrace

Encore 2: 23. Rebel Yell

The first night of the Los Angeles shows (a date that was added due to the enormous demand) hosted the band at the Wiltern Theater, one of the most famous theaters in all of Los Angeles for its art deco architecture (designed by Stiles O. Clements of Morgan, Walls & Clements, the city’s oldest architectural firm). It was a grand setting for the act. Night one featured fans lining up from the early hours of the morning to ensure their place at the very front of the stage, as close to the band members as they could possibly manage. The band modified The Funeral of Hearts slightly, as Ville noted on stage that they never seem to know how to begin playing that song. The end of the set list changed slightly from the Arizona date, with the band closing on moodier note with When Love and Death Embrace, rather than ending the evening with their well-known cover of Rebel Yell.

The Wiltern Night One Set List:

Encore: 20. Pretending 21. Rebel Yell 22. When Love and Death Embrace

The second night of the Wiltern stop had some familiar faces, as fans eagerly jumped on the opportunity to see their favorite band perform twice. The energy was very amped for this performance, as the musicians bellowed out impressive tunes and showcased the years of exquisite talent and skill each and every one possess. New drummer Kosmo played with an especially enthusiastic flare, and keyboardist Burton really got into his instrument. The second night certainly featured a rather unexpected and comical moment, as a fan in the front row pulled the tab on a little confetti popper directly in front of vocalist Ville near the end of one of the songs, who certainly did not see that coming! The reaction left many giggling long after the show had closed.

The Wiltern Night Two Set List:

Industrial Disco Never Died: Catch Thrill Kill Kult’s 30th Anniversary Tour Oct/Nov 2017!

The band’s final California performance took place at the House of Blues in Anaheim at their new location on Garden Walk. Significantly larger than the previous House of Blues, this venue certainly made room for a slew of fans. Several of the Los Angeles attendees traveled to this third California show as the opportunity was available. The band performed with a great deal of fun at this venue, with Migé and Ville getting into a little dance jive during the solo of a song. Exactly like the previous performances, Linde and Migé partnered up on stage often for the intense guitar parts, which made for some exceptionally awesome facial expressions. The encore of this show changed significantly as a fan managed to pass a sign over to the band on stage, which requested that the band’s ten minute song Sleepwalking Past Hope be played. The front man turned to his accompanying band mates and asked if they should play the song, to which everyone obliged and the melody began. The ending of Sleepwalking graciously merged into the beginning of the band’s cover of Rebel Yell, which closed off the night.

House of Blues Anaheim Set List:

Encore: 20. Sleepwalking Past Hope 21. Rebel Yell

A band that will be celebrated long after their end, we bid farewell to the gods of Love Metal.

Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt at the Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band concert held at the Kia Forum on April 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

But “Wrecking Ball” remains a key moment in his set, not for how sentimental it makes us feel about basketball barns, but for how it makes us feel about us, its true intended subject. Like a lot of the standby songs and commentaries on his 2023 tour and now (following a sick-day pause) the ‘24 outing, this particular standout has to do with his most recurring theme of recent years, live and on record: the thin veil between life and death. In Springsteen’s advanced view of mortality, we’re all dumps-that-jump, in a manner of thinking. And he’s come back from enforced hiatus to throw us the best party, or wake, we could possibly have.

Springsteen hasn’t spoken so much publicly about the condition that took him off the road for six months, and which caused these particular L.A. dates to be postponed for four. But something about his first Forum show Thursday caused him to get a little bit chattier about the malady.

“We’re sorry we missed you last time,” he said during a spoken interlude in the middle of an epic version of “Tenth Avenue Freezeout,” being performed as the show’s penultimate number after the setlist had already passed the three-hour point. “I hope we didn’t put you out too much. But, man,” he elaborated, “I had the worst motherfucking bellyache you could ever imagine.”

“When I sang, my belly ached,” he said.

“When I did anything, my belly ached,” he continued.

Bruce Springsteen has fire in the belly. Lucky for him and everyone else, it’s back to being a fire that does not consume.

At a length of three hours and 20 minutes, Springsteen’s opening Forum show pretty much set the bar for not gentle into that good Thursday night. Its 200-minute running time was 40 minutes longer than most other sets of his lately, all of which already test and transcend what a guy in his early 70s who recently recovered from illness ought to be pulling off. It’s reductive, though, to focus too much on the running time, which makes it feel like an endurance test or marathon. Yes, every minute added onto a show beyond the tour mean confers some kind of badge of pride on attendees, and it’s great fun to start doing the numbers as a show begins to expand… but the miracle is not just that he endures.

The miracle is that he bobs and weaves with a dynamic setlist that needs that much expansiveness to sufficiently cover multiple moments of sorrow or grief and “Twist and Shout” (should you be so lucky to get that bonus track as a celebration of life, as Thursday’s crowd did).

As fans have already noted during these first few weeks of the 2024 touring resumption, the setlists tend to be only about 75% set in stone. That’s to say, they’re much looser than when the E Street Band hit the road again in 2023, closer to how they used to be in legendary days of yore. For anyone who likes to go to more than one show on a tour, or just for anybody who enjoys knowing they’re in the presence of some free-spiritedness, this flexibility is a godsend.

Given that the surprises each night are added onto the surety of some of the most powerful song sequences he’s ever constructed for a tour, a 2024 Bruce Springsteen show is really something that gives “overstuffed” a good name.

Most of his shows on this show have opened with “Lonesome Day,” which is nearly an overture for the conflicted lyrical feelings that will come up in the emotionally dynamic hours to come. But occasionally he’ll start off with a ringer in advance even of that opener. Thursday, it was a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom,” which ain’t nothing but primal — the blues as filtered through a “Nuggets” sensibility. He hadn’t done this oldie since 2016, which augured well for tour premieres and oddities.

Would an oldie this obscure count among the highlights of a three-hour-plus set that includes an inordinate amount of the best rock songs ever written? On the face of it, no. Or yes, for that segment of fans that lives for the idea of audibles being called.

The biggest surprise of the night: the return of Patti Scialfa, who performed on a few 2023 shows and then disappeared from public view. (“Where’s Patti?” isn’t quite up there with “Where’s Shelly?,” but it still remained a question.) Now we knew, without the FBI being called in: His bride is just living her post-E-Street life, happy to show up for a cameo instead of being tied to a recurring gig. “My baby’s back!,” Springsteen exclaimed, kicking off the first of two numbers the couple performed as a team. The recently rare “Tougher Than the Rest” featured Scialfa leaning in close on their single mic for harmony, followed by “Fire.” That number, Springsteen said, hadn’t been played “in a long time. We did do it on Broadway,” he clarified, but “Patti’s never done it.” By which he possibly meant never performed it as a full-on duet; his wife unexpectedly got the first verse of this ‘70s perennial all to herself. (Patti as a Pointer Sister, to name the group that really made the song famous? Live long enough, and all sorts of things can happen.)

The bones of the set were otherwise mostly intact. “Prove It All Night” follows “Lonesome Day” at the beginning, as a promise. But sometimes it seems like rock ‘n’ roll’s power as an elixir won’t be enough, if you’re reallly following how an underlying narrative develops.

“Ghosts” and “Letter to You,” both from the album of the latter name, overtly introduce the theme of loss, so often returned to. Then the mournful hits keep coming, as pointed segues. “My City of Ruins,” whose “Rise up” chorus barely disguises just how sad it is, goes in for more than 10 minutes, with cheerful chatter, as Bruce introduces the band, followed by bittersweet moments dedicated to the group’s fallen members. That in memoriam segued into a cover of the Commodores’ ‘80s hit “Nightshift,” which pays homage to soul music’s lost ‘60s and ‘70s greats, including Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.

The soul memorial led into “Last Man Standing,” his song about realizing he was the last surviving member of his original band — a song so solemn it’s performed just by Springsteen and a solitary trumpeter, who might as well be playing “Taps.” From there, much of the crowd is relieved to hear Springsteen singing something as light as “Backstreets”… or is it? “Until the end… until the end…,” he sang, drawing one line out into a chant. It’s a “Born to Run” suite that has finally turned into the requiem it was apparently always meant to be.

And then, as this emotionally fraught show drew closer to a close, we got the Three Stooges. That is, during the go-for-broke joy of “Rosalita,” there was a moment when the otherwise stone-faced Little Steven Van Zandt drew close to Springsteen and they indulged in some Larry, Curly and Moe-style face-poking, prodding, mugging and noise-making.

Springsteen has put on a tour that is the most bittersweet show on earth, until it finally settles for being the happiest, and occasionally even goofiest. That feels like a perfectly honest place to land, after having perhaps challenged some audience members’ expectations of a pure party by reminding them about the loved ones they’ve lost.

There was a workman quality to some of Springsteen’s performance, meant in the most positive sense: When you see him quickly switch guitars at the end of seemingly nearly every number — sometimes walking his guitar to a roadie, sometimes confidently tossing it across part of the expanse of stage — you can laugh at the sheer efficiency of that quickness, like he’s a factory worker switching out pieces of equipment at clockwork intervals.

Given his stage mastery, was it possible Springsteen was moving even himself with this show? It’s probably risky i to parse exactly what emotions a showman this great might be spontaneously feeling. The most deeply emotional moments are deeply baked into the tour. As always, he gave the much-quoted speech about his old friend and bandmate George Theiss’ passing, about the clarity that death brings the living. This should be rote for Springsteen by now, given how little variation he introduces into the homily, as he retells it. Yet his closed eyes looked moist enough as he eulogized his teenaged soulmate once again Thursday night. Honestly, it could also just have been perspiration (even though his face didn’t look that sweaty in the closeups seen on the two big screens for the rest of the show).

Either way, sweat or tears, it was working, like it’s always worked for a few generations now. “You’ll need a good companion for this part of the ride,” Springsteen sang toward the end of the show in “Land of Hope of Dreams,” part of the tumult of climactic numbers. Maybe he didn’t mean that line as an actual rock ‘n’ roll direct-sales pitch at the time he wrote it, but he sure keeps living up to it.

Everything We Know About Malcolm McRae, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Husband

The two secretly tied the knot in New Orleans in 2022

'cabaret at the kit kat club' new cast vip arrivals

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, you might be wondering a bit about who exactly McRae is, and how he and Taylor-Joy met. Below, read everything we know about the musician and fellow actor.

He’s part of a two-person rock band.

Taylor-Joy could tell you how hard it is to fight the allure of a man playing an instrument. Her husband is one half of a rock band called more* , which he cofounded with former Portugal. The Man member Kane Ritchotte. The musicians were first introduced by Brandon Bernath, a filmmaker who has worked on a number of videos for more*, for “Green,” “Lazy James,” and “Keeping It in the Family.”

The duo released its first EP, 1/2, in July 2020, and since then has released two more EPs, 2/2 (2021) and Another Change (2022) . The band also opened for Haim’s One More HAIM Tour throughout May and June 2022.

He is also an actor.

While music seems to be McRae’s main artistic outlet, he also has a history in theater.

In fact, according to his IMDb page , the Alabama native won an acting competition when he was only 12, receiving the Over All Young Actor award in 2006 at the AMTC talent competition.

Since then, he has starred in the short films Brotherly and How’dy , the musical 13 , and two episodes of the Prime Video miniseries Daisy Jones & the Six . He is also set to star in upcoming fantasy horror film Triton alongside Freya Allan and Raff Law.

His social media shows his love of art and architecture.

Clearly, McRae is a fan of all kinds of art. The multitalented creative frequently uses his Instagram page to highlight works of art or architectural feats he admires.

For instance, in January, the songwriter shared a snap of the Rosenbaum House, writing: “Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Rosenbaum House in Florence, AL (shout out home state). 1939. Wright built about 60 ‘Usonian’ homes, intended as low-cost housing for lower middle-class families. Most cost about double their og budgets. This one $14k (back in 30’s). But they’re certainly purty. Have seen this one in person but am a shit photog so credit Patrick Hood.”

He wrote a song about Anya only two days after they met.

According to People , Taylor-Joy and McRae first met at the March 2021 premiere of her hit Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit . That same month, Taylor-Joy alluded to her new beau in an interview with Elle , saying, “My partner’s just come back from work, and he’s moving around all of his equipment, so this was the safe spot” (in reference to why she was conducting her Zoom interview from the bathroom).

Only days after their first encounter, McRae wrote a song about meeting the Emmy-nominated star, which he detailed in an Instagram post later on. “I wrote this song for Anya two days after meeting her,” he wrote on the social media platform in March 2022. “It’s called ‘Really Want to See You Again’. Available to stream and watch now through @moretheband.”

They secretly tied the knot in April 2022.

In a surprise Instagram post on their second wedding anniversary, Taylor-Joy revealed that she and McRae secretly tied the knot in the spring of 2022. Up until that point, many believed the couple had gotten married in Venice (due to photos from a presumably larger ceremony), but it turns out the official event took place in Louisiana.

“Two years ago, on April Fools, I secretly married my best friend in New Orleans,” Taylor-Joy wrote. “The magic of that day is ingrained in every cell of my being, forever. Happy second ( first ) anniversary my love…you’re the coolest🫀 N.B yes, those are anatomically correct heart cakes. Yes, I am the vampire Lestat. 📷 @caradelevingne + @sebastianfaena 👗 beautifully embroidered with our love story by @dior.”

In her slideshow, the Golden Globe winner included shots of herself and McRae all dressed up for their nuptials, as well as a photo of their wedding cakes, which looked like bloody hearts dropped on a plate.

On the same day that Taylor-Joy revealed their anniversary, McRae shared his own post , which read: “I love you now and somehow I always have and somehow it will never end. Happy two year anniversary (yesterday), beautiful. Photos @sebastianfaena.”

Springsteen, band back live in concert, says he 'couldn't sing at all' due to peptic ulcer disease

ABCNews logo

NEW YORK -- Bruce Springsteen is speaking out after relaunching his tour with the E Street Band following a six-month break to deal with a diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease.

"The Boss" revealed that during the worst stages of his condition, he wasn't able to sing at all.

Calling into Sirius XM's E Street Radio on March 21, Springsteen said, "You sing with your diaphragm. You know, my diaphragm was hurting so badly that when I went to make the effort to sing, it was killing me, so I literally couldn't sing at all, you know? And that lasted for two, three months, along with just a myriad of other painful problems."

"It took a while for the doctors to say, 'Oh, no, you're gonna be OK,'" he said. "At first, nobody was quite saying that, which made me nervous, y'know?"

Now that Springsteen is back in good shape, he said he and the band consider their return to the stage a "whole new tour."

"There'll be a much wider song selection going on," he said. "Some of the second half of the set is built so solid, so a lot of it'll stay. The opening ... I'm not sure what's going to happen up top, but it'll shift around. I'm waiting to see myself where the show is going to take me."

SEE MORE: Bruce Springsteen postpones remainder of 2023 tour dates as he recovers from peptic ulcer disease

"But ... for us, it's a new tour, a new day, and we're approaching everything like that," he continued. "We're looking forward to having a lot of fun."

The band currently has dates scheduled through November.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, "a peptic ulcer, or stomach or duodenal ulcer, is a sore on the lining of your stomach or duodenum."

Acid from the stomach can cause sores or other types of injury or damage to the esophagus, stomach or small intestine.

"The most common causes of peptic ulcers are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [ such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen ] ," the NIDDK states, adding the "common symptoms of peptic ulcers include pain or discomfort in your abdomen, feeling full too soon during or too full after a meal, nausea, bloating, and belching."

Doctors may recommend proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers or other medicines to treat the condition and help ulcers heal.

"If your peptic ulcers aren't caused by H. pylori infection or NSAIDs, doctors will check for uncommon causes," the agency states. "Depending on the cause, doctors may recommend additional treatments."

The Breeders' Kim Deal Says It’s 'a Big Deal' Olivia Rodrigo Tapped Her '90s Alt-Rock Band for the Guts Tour (Exclusive)

The iconic '90s group will play four nights of the pop-rock superstar's tour as it comes to New York City's Madison Square Garden on April 5, 6, 8 and 9

band him tour

Olivia Rodrigo once said that she thinks of her life before hearing “Cannonball” by The Breeders and after.

Flash forward to 2024 when the pop-rock star, 21, is out on her first-ever arena tour in support of her sophomore album GUTS — and now the ‘90s alt-rock group fronted by Kim Deal is joining her for four sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on April 5, 6, 8 and 9.

One can imagine that it’s exciting for the three-time Grammy winner to be playing alongside one of her favorite bands — but as for Deal herself, she’s simply in disbelief that it’s happening at all.

“We’re just from Dayton, Ohio!” jokes Deal, 62, of herself and her bandmates. “We’re really excited. It’s a big deal.”

The Breeders frontwoman explains that it was sometime last fall that the band’s management team revealed that the “vampire” singer wanted them to join her at MSG. “I was just like, ‘ What ?’ It was odd!” she recalls.

“Then she began doing more stuff for this album, and you find out she knows Annie Clark [of St. Vincent ] and she listens to all sorts of different music from Billy Joel to Sheryl Crow and it's like, ‘Oh, she's just really into music,’” Deal continued. “Knowing that, it made more sense. She just really liked us!”

While notes of the Last Splash band’s alternative sound is all over GUTS , Deal is also known for being a source of inspiration to young women in rock. After all, she launched the group (also featuring her twin sister Kelley, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson) as a creative outlet when she felt underused as the bassist in her former band The Pixies.

Still — despite being an indie music legend who was hand-picked to open for Nirvana in 1992 — the rocker admits the scale of Rodrigo’s live show and MSG has been a bit intimidating as she and the band rehearsed for the upcoming shows.

“I have played Madison Square Garden before. It was in 1992 [with The Pixies] and we opened for U2 on the Zoo TV Tour,” the singer/guitarist reflects. “I don’t remember it. I remember the shows that weren't good — those burn into my mind — and it must've been a good show since I can't remember.”

Kevin Westenberg

While The Breeders joined Foo Fighters out on the road last year where they largely played outdoor amphitheaters, MSG’s capacity of nearly 20,000 and the “get him back!” singer’s production feel “huge” to her. “I told my friend, ‘I just don't know how to get that big,’” Deal says. “He goes, ‘Act like you're yelling at a cop!’ Like, I don't think so. No. He goes, ‘I know! You're Mel Gibson in Braveheart , just stand there and yell, ‘Freedom!’’ and then you'll be that big.”

While Deal says that she also became somewhat concerned about how the younger contingent of Rodrigo’s audience might react to their “loud guitars,” she admits that she thinks it’s “thrilling” they’ll be playing for their most junior crowd to date.

“There are very young girls there, so we’re excited about [that],” she says, mentioning that she thinks it’s pretty special how Rodrigo is imparting her taste and the cult-loved indie band onto a “new generation.”

“When you tell your friend, ‘You should listen to this band,’ I think she's just like that,” Deal says of the pop-rock superstar. “‘You girls and guys need to hear this! This is a good band, and I'm going to have them play for you, so you can see what a good band is.’”

“Maybe that's what she's doing,” the “Divine Hammer” singer adds. “She didn't have to have us!”

Deal also notes that she has loved to see how the Sour artist has been distributing contraceptives at her shows , advocating for abortion access and donating proceeds of her ticket sales to her non-profit Fund For Good . “The announcement about her giving out condoms? Yes. I loved it. Plan B? I loved it. I was like, ‘Oh, f--- yes, you go girl!’” she explains.

It’s been fulfilling to see in part because “she doesn’t have to do that,” but also because Deal remembers how the alt-rock and riot grrrl scenes that have inspired Rodrigo were using their platforms similarly in the ‘90s. “When we were playing [ Lollapalooza in ‘94], there were get out the vote booths, Right to Choose booths … gay rights. There has been a lot of activism for voting and for women's rights and women's health and reproductive rights for decades within [the scene].”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Deal describes The Breeder’s appearance on The GUTS Tour — which revels in Rodrigo’s feminine take on teenage rebellion and emotion — as especially exciting, since the group came out of a music landscape when women in rock were really beginning to carve out their own lane.

“I do remember there was a loneliness back in the day when I was out with The Pixies and I was the only girl on tour,” Deal recalls, sharing that there were times where “oppressive, menacing” encounters out on the road made her feel unwelcome.

Bands like Sonic Youth , Bikini Kill, post-punk outfit L-Seven, alt-rockers Throwing Muses, the British group Th' Faith Healers and Dutch band Bettie Serveert, as well as hip-hop stars like Queen Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa , were sources of inspiration for Deal and The Breeders.

“I can be told so many times that there just weren’t a lot of women back in the day. And that's not true. There were tons of women back in the day,” she says.

Deal also reminisces about the riot grrrl movement and scene leaders like Kathleen Hanna who were advocating for women to feel seen in and outside of music. “She was out there up in the Northwest saying things like, ‘Make room for us in the front!’” the musician says of the Bikini Kill frontwoman, now 55.

“It was really a good way of looking at things that nobody was looking at before. And they were cool bands, cool people saying, ‘Give us some room. This is ridiculous,’” she adds, recalling queues of people waiting to crowd surf and stage dive, and countless Doc Martens being thrown on stage and hitting concert-goers in the head.

While Deal might be rather humble when she’s been called an inspiration herself, it all but makes sense the alt-rock icon is taking the stage with Gen Z’s own riot grrrl-inspired rockstar. Even months ago, Rodrigo expressed how much wisdom she hopes to absorb from the Pod group when they cross paths at MSG.

“It really is exciting that I think it's just Olivia,” The Breeders vocalist reiterates of how the hitmaker tapped The Breeders for The GUTS Tour bill. “I think everybody will be cool about it, obviously, because we're the act that she chose.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
