Barcelona Sorsogon | One-Stop, Quick-Hop Wonder

There are 31 places in the world that share the name Barcelona, a city in Spain popular for its medieval treasures. And in the Philippines, there are 7 of it, tailing Colombia in the top count with 8 towns. But I am only taking you to the most popular Barcelona in the Pacific—-that of Barcelona Sorsogon.

There are quite a few stories how it got the name of the great Spanish city. Some say Spanish conquistadores called it Barcelona out of homesickness. Others write, that because it resembled the Catalonian city.

Whatever there were to its name, one thing is certain—Spanish colonizers arrived in Sorsogon as early as 16 th century. And just like in many parts of the country where they made settlements, Hispanized names are not a surprise.

Quick Stop: Barcelona Sorsogon

Barcelona Sorsogon is sandwiched between 2 tourism hotspots in this side of Bicol: Gubat, the surfing havana & Bulusan, famous for its volcano adventures.

While it’s pretty in itself, basking on emerald fields & sun-kissed beachlines , it only captures passing-by tourists coming from both ends. And visitors only stay for an hour at most only to see the church of St. Joseph, the Presidencia ruins & quick photo-ops at the marquee.

It’s really far from imagined. Here, there are no Sagrada Familia, Park Güell or Casa Batlló. If there are any traces of Spain in Barcelona Sorsogon, that would be the old-world charm of St. Joseph Church.

Governadorcillo Juan Evasco built this church in 1874. Much like the churches in coastal areas around the Philippines, this too was made out of corals & egg whites as mortar ingredients. The façade, walls & floors are still in tact from its construction several centuries ago.

Across the church is Barcelona Ruins Park where the remnants of the old Presidencia Building still stand. This spot used to be the Municipal Office & fortress but was toppled by wars & typhoons.

Story has it that there’s a tunnel that runs through the Presidencia Ruins & the church but is now unsafe for viewing.

There’s really nothing else to see in Barcelona Sorsogon. Nonetheless, it’s still a beautiful place for a breezy stopover. You can run to the beach for a quick dip or enjoy local snacks lined up at the roadside.

And oh, if you’re wondering where the rest of the Barcelonas are in the Philippines, they can be found in Surigao del Sur, Dapitan, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Guimaras & Camarines Sur. All these places were strongholds of the Spanish empire back in time. Around the world, these are in Spain, Colombia, Venezuela, America, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil & Aruba.

Exploring the hidden gems of sorsogon: a tale of adventure in sorsogon tourist spot.

sorsogon tourist spots

Introduction

When I first set foot in Sorsogon, I was immediately captivated by its charm and diverse attractions. This province, located at the southeastern tip of Luzon Island in the Philippines , offers an unparalleled combination of stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and an array of exciting activities. As I journeyed to discover what this place offers, I uncovered some of the most amazing Sorsogon tourist spots.

The Unforgettable Journey to Donsol

My adventure began in the quaint coastal town of Donsol, which has gained international recognition as one of the best places to watch and swim with whale sharks. As a marine enthusiast, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these gentle giants at this unique Sorsogon tourist spot.

sorsogon tourist spots

After a brief orientation on safety guidelines and responsible whale-shark interaction, we boarded our boat and set off to find these magnificent creatures. As we sailed along the coast, our boat captain and the local “spotters” searched for the telltale signs of the whale sharks. When we finally encountered one, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The sheer size and grace of the whale shark were awe-inspiring.

In addition to whale shark watching, Donsol offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life waiting to be discovered.

Nature’s Majesty at Bulusan Volcano Natural Park

My next stop was the Bulusan Volcano Natural Park, a Sorsogon tourist spot known for its lush forests, diverse flora and fauna, and magnificent Bulusan Volcano. The park offers several hiking trails that take you through verdant landscapes, providing birdwatching and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Lake Bulusan is a serene Sorsogon tourist spot at the park’s heart, perfect for relaxation and reflection. Surrounded by dense forests and the towering volcano, the lake’s tranquil waters offer a picturesque spot for kayaking or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature.

Enchanting Water Escapades at Paguriran Island

Eager to experience more of Sorsogon’s coastal beauty, I went to Paguriran Island, a Sorsogon tourist spot that offers a unique blend of island and lagoon. The stunning turquoise waters of the lagoon are surrounded by a natural coral and rock formation, which forms a protective barrier and a perfect setting for swimming and snorkeling.

As I explored the lagoon, I marveled at the variety of marine life that called this enchanting place home. The vibrant corals and schools of colorful fish provided a spectacular underwater show that left me in awe.

A Dip in the Healing Waters of Irosin Hot Springs

After days of adventure and exploration, I decided to relax and rejuvenate at the Irosin Hot Springs, a Sorsogon tourist spot known for its therapeutic waters. The hot springs, believed to have healing properties, offer a soothing respite for tired muscles and weary souls.

As I soaked in the warm, mineral-rich waters, I could feel the tension in my body dissipate, replaced by a sense of calm and well-being. It was a magical experience and a perfect way to recharge before continuing my journey.

A Journey Back in Time: Barcelona Church and Ruins

With my spirit rejuvenated, I headed to Barcelona to explore its rich history and heritage. The centuries-old Barcelona Church, a sorsogon tourist spot that is a testament to the region’s Spanish colonial past, was my first stop. Constructed in the 19th century, this beautiful stone church has withstood the test of time, proudly showcasing its intricate facade and ornate interiors.

sorsogon tourist spots

A short walk from the church led me to the Presidencia Building ruins, a former Spanish colonial government building that now stands as a silent witness to Sorsogon’s past. As I wandered through the remnants of the structure, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection to the generations that had lived and thrived in this region.

Indulging in Local Flavors and Delicacies

Every trip to Sorsogon would be complete with sampling the local cuisine, and I was eager to explore the gastronomic delights of this Sorsogon tourist spot. The region is known for its mouthwatering dishes, such as the creamy “laing,” a spicy taro leaf stew cooked in coconut milk, and the delectable “kinunot,” a dish made from stingray meat and malunggay leaves cooked in a rich, spicy coconut sauce.

sorsogon tourist spots

In addition to these traditional dishes, I also had the chance to savor some unique local delicacies, such as “pili” nuts, a delicious and nutritious nut native to the Bicol region, and the refreshing “kalamay-hati,” a sweet coconut-based dessert that’s perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth.

Just like its name suggests, Pili Haven is a pili farm with lots of trees and other plants. But unlike most farms, in Pili Haven, not only will you be surrounded by nature, but you’ll also find bamboo bridges, a restaurant that serves delicious local food, and several photo spots specially created to brighten up your feed.

Container of Pili Haven's pili nuts

You’ll see giant man-made nests, colorful flower gardens, and even a windmill made out of bamboo. Don’t miss the chance to take a photo with the red jeepney! More than just a photo nook, the jeepney was actually used in the 1990s to deliver pili nuts to different areas in the province.

Apart from touring the property, visitors can also hold special events like birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries or take part in workshops about how to turn pili nut shells into furniture, accessories, and decorations. Of course, you can also buy and take home different kinds of pili delicacies from the farm.

Museo Sorsogon's facade

Museo Sorsogon was once an Old Provincial Jail but it was restored by the local government to become a place that showcases the history and culture of Sorsogon. The Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Culture and Arts Office manages this museum and the office aims to make it a prominent Sorsogon tourist spot.

An exhibit in Museo Sorsogon

The building has two floors and ten galleries, which are converted jail cells. The galleries feature exhibitions that tell the origins of Sorsogon, the province’s participation in the Philippine Revolution, and the state of the region during the American occupation. Paintings made by jail inmates are also on display.

Museo Sorsogon also has a large amphitheater in its yard alongside two coffee shops where visitors can relax and have snacks. The museum is tucked within the Provincial Capitol grounds in Alegre, Sorsogon City and you can visit it as part of a Sorsogon sightseeing tour . If you want more time to explore it, you can book a Museo Sorsogon tour with dinner and a cultural show .

Located in Barangay Talisay in Prieto Diaz, Bigaho Ecopark is named after a grass family that locals use to create handicrafts. To get to the ecopark, visitors must cross a 750-meter long bamboo bridge that leads to an islet. It’s not a short walk, but the journey is made easier with the several species of mangroves along the bridge. These protected species help keep the path to the ecopark cool.

Once you reach Bigaho Ecopark, you will be rewarded with fresh air, calming lagoons, rocky caves, and beautiful views of Mayon Volcano and Albay Gulf. Apart from taking in the gorgeous scenery, a visit here will also allow you to hike, trek, camp, and commune with nature. If you can’t stay overnight, at least stay until late afternoon as the ecopark also boasts stunning sunset views. Don’t worry if you suddenly feel hungry during your visit, as the park offers meals that are cooked with fresh local ingredients.

Botong Twin Falls

Botong Twin Falls is situated in Osiao, Bacon District of Sorsogon City. The falls are considered one of the top eco-tourism spots in the city area. The site is considered a natural wonder as it features two waterfalls standing close to each other but they give out two different watercolors.

  • Check out our list of the best waterfalls in the Philippines

The first waterfall has green-colored water while the other one reflects blue. This phenomenon is the reason why the Botong Twin Falls are fondly called Blue and Green Falls.

Botong Twin Falls is a great place to swim and have a picnic with family and friends. There are picnic huts and tables set up around the falls for visitors to use. These waterfalls stand within the compounds of the PNOC-BACMAN Geothermal Plant. Although the site is open to the public, you need to coordinate with the PNOC before visiting the falls.

Palogtoc Falls (Palogtok Falls) resides in San Roque, Bulusan Municipality, and is one of the more low-key Bicol tourist spots you can find. Palogtoc Falls is a natural grotto that features a small cascade that falls into an artificial pool. Visitors tend to love the spring water in this pool because it is clean, clear, and refreshing.

The Palagtok area exudes a tranquil atmosphere. It has a lush landscape, surrounded by coconut and pili nut trees. There is a nearby river and some nipa and bamboo huts where visitors can enjoy some shade.

You can access Palogtoc Falls from the Mount Bulusan trailhead between the Bulusan park entrance and San Roque. You need to walk about 500 meters from this trailhead to reach the falls.

Dancalan Beach

Dancalan Beach is nestled on the shoreline of Bulusan Municipality. This beach is clean, wide, and has gray/off-white colored sand. Dancalan can easily get overlooked by tourists, but it is popular among locals.

Dancalan has a rustic look and feel. It features pleasant countryside scenery. Just right in front of this Sorsogon beach lies a vast rice field. Towering mountains in the distance serve as a picturesque backdrop to Dancalan.

Dancalan Beach is an excellent swimming beach for children as it remains shallow (1-2 feet) even at about 40 meters from the shoreline. There is a minimal entrance fee to the beach, and you can also rent open-air nipa huts for a reasonable price. It is also quite common for visitors to pitch a tent on the beach.

Aerial view of San Bernardino Island's coast

Photo by Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Culture and the Arts Office

San Bernardino Island lies off the coast of Bulusan, Sorsogon, and across the San Bernardino Strait. The island is mostly undeveloped and has maintained its natural beauty.

San Bernardino has beautiful hills, a lush landscape, and ocean panoramas. Its other main attraction is an old lighthouse built more than a century ago. This structure ( El Faro De Islote De San Bernardino in Spanish) was one of the most important lighthouses in the Spanish colonial era. It used to guide boats into the Philippine capital,  Manila , from the Pacific Ocean and vice versa. The San Bernardino Strait is well-known for its treacherous waters.

Most visitors to the island sign up for a pre-arranged San Bernardino Island guided tour to truly understand its history and heritage. Tourists have the option to stay overnight as there are a few homestays on the island. Even though these accommodations are not 4-star, they are operated by local families known to be friendly and hospitable.

The St. Joseph Parish Church sits at the heart of Barcelona town, Sorsogon. According to local stories, homesick Spanish soldiers named this town after the renowned Barcelona in Spain. Thus, St. Joseph Parish is also commonly referred to as Barcelona Church.

Interior of Barcelona Church in Sorsogon

St. Joseph was built in 1874 by the Franciscan priests. It is the oldest of all churches in the Bicol region and is considered to be one of the most beautiful. Some of St Joseph Church's original structures like the facade, walls, and bell tower have remained intact. However, administrators needed to renovate the church interiors and reinforce the windows with glass and steel. If you walk from the church and across the streets, you will find some century-old building ruins.

Aerial view of Panumbagan Sandbar

The gorgeous Panumbagan Sandbar stands off the shoreline of Barangay Bantayan Pilar, Sorsogon. For a sandbar, Panumbagan is big and long and can pass off as an islet. It stretches to more than 5-kilometers and features white pebbly sand. Aside from having ocean views, the sandbar also offers panoramas of the Mayon and Bulusan Volcanoes.

The sandbar is a popular stop for boat tours exploring the area.

Mt. Pulog stands high in the municipality of Bacon, Sorsogon. It is a different mountain from Mt. Pulag in North Luzon, which is the highest peak in Luzon and one of the best hiking spots in the Philippines . Although Mt. Pulog is the lesser-known peak, it is an excellent mountaineering destination for compelling reasons.

Mt. Pulog features lush scenery and offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It is a relatively easy hike that most people can finish in less than a day. Thus, you don’t have to be an expert hiker to take on Mt. Pulog. The mountain trail begins with hiking through the rural woodlands, where you will encounter native plants and trees like pili and abaca. The steeper part of the trail brings you through a thick forest and green fields. At the summit sits a scenic round-shaped lake.

The gateway to Mt. Pulog is Barangay San Cruz, which is about 9KM away from Sorsogon City. Once you arrive in Sta. Cruz, it’s easy to find a guide to take you to the peak.

Guard stands infront of a bahay na bato in Juban

Photo by Juban Provincial Police Office

Bahay na Bato refers to the collection of Spanish colonial houses nestled in the town of Juban, Sorsogon. Constructed in 1898, the centuries-old houses are called “Bahay na Bato” (house of stone) because of their stone brick foundation.

These stone bricks formed the base of the houses while the upper structure is made of wood. Another striking feature of the houses is their large sliding windows that are made of hardwood and embellished with capiz shells. The "Bahay na Bato" structures have collectively become the pride of Juban and a major Sorsogon tourist spot.

Because they are unique, well-preserved and a reminder of the Spanish colonial period. Most of these stone homes stand alongside the Maharlika Highway in the town proper of Juban.

The Geneblazo family established the Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary to become a safe and healthy habitat for aquatic animals and plants to thrive. Today, this privately owned sanctuary is open to the public who wish to learn about marine biodiversity and conservation.

The fish sanctuary is set up like a fish farm, as it is enclosed with bamboo structures to protect the marine life in it. However, the owners do not harvest these sea creatures and make money from them.

While here, visitors can swim/snorkel underwater and enter the bamboo enclosures to view sea creatures, reefs, and plants up close. Examples of marine species in the sanctuary include giant clams, marine turtles, lobsters, sea cucumbers, and oysters.

The Juag Lagoon Fish Sanctuary lies off the coast of the Matnog town port. It is one of the usual stops of a standard Matnog island hopping tour itinerary.

Natural spring pool in Tropical Hot Spring Paradise

Some of the prominent resorts in the area include Tropical Hot Spring Paradise, Nature Hot Spring Resort, Aramaru Resort, and 401K Resort. Locals believe that the cold and hot springs in Irosin have healing qualities. Whether this claim is accurate or not, the spring resorts still attract a lot of people. Paguriran Island and Lagoon in Sorsogon

Paguriran Island and Lagoon is one of the natural wonders of Sorsogon. Travel guides best describe it as a lagoon in the middle of the ocean. Strictly speaking, Paguriran is not an island but more like a large rocky formation out in the sea. Despite being surrounded by water, Paguriran is within walking distance from a sandy shore. You can walk to it during low tide or even high tide when the water level is usually waist-high.

The tourism highlight of Paguriran is its lagoon that occupies the hollow middle portion of the rocky islet. The water in this lagoon reflects a clear aquamarine color, which is considered world-class. The jumping point to Paguriran Island is Barangay Sawangga, Bacon. From Sorsogon City, you can ride a jeepney or a tricycle to the town of Bacon.

A firefly on a long blade of grass

The Donsol firefly tour comes with an expert guide who will give you insights into the fireflies and surroundings.

Firefly watching in Ogod River is a relaxing and rewarding experience. After all, it is not easy to find a large congregation of fireflies just anywhere. These elusive creatures tend to stay in forests and around bodies of water where the air is clean and clear.

Sunset over Rizal Beach

Situated in the municipality of Gubat, Rizal is one of the gorgeous Sorsogon beach sites that have remained underdeveloped. This beach is admired for its clear blue waters and golden-colored sand.

Rizal Beach is nestled right at the center of a cove, about 5 kilometers from the main town of Gubat. It is a wide beach with a long shoreline. Rizal is often clean and well-maintained. During your visit, you can rent out wooden cottages or stay under the surrounding trees for some shade.

Many people consider Rizal Beach Sorsogon one of the best beaches in the Bicol region because of its raw beauty. Locals love to swim and hang out on this beach, especially in the afternoon.

Aerial view of Subic Beach, Sorsogon

Subic Beach is a gorgeous and unspoiled 300-meter sandy stretch on Calintaan Island, Sorsogon. The beach is known for its powdery sand, which features a pinkish-white color. This rare color is due to the presence of tiny red corals around the shoreline. Complementing the unique sand color is the clear turquoise waters, which make Subic Beach very photogenic.

  • Read our article on the best beaches in the Philippines

Subic Beach gives off a laid-back vibe and is seldom busy with crowds. It is not ideal for beginner swimmers because the tides are often high, and the water level near the shore is deep. However, it is an excellent place to relax, sunbathe, and read a book. If you like a shaded spot to have a picnic, the beach has small huts available for rent at an affordable fee.

You can also explore other spots in Calintaan Island, including the Calintaan Cave, which can be found on the other side of the island.

Matnog Municipality is the gateway to Subic Beach, Sorsogon. You need to take a 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Matnog to reach Calintaan Island or join a Sorsogon Subic Beach tour .

Aerial view of Tikling Island, Sorsogon

Visitors come to Tikling Island Sorsogon to enjoy its powdery sand beach, which features a white and pinkish color. Pink beaches are rare to find, and Tikling has managed to maintain the raw beauty. Forests and lush vegetation fringe Tikling Island. The surrounding water here reflects an aquamarine color. It remains clear even if you go several meters from the shoreline. Another outstanding feature of Tikling is its rock formations located at the other end of the island.

A whale shark swimming near the surface

Donsol is Sorsogon’s most popular destination as it is world-famous for whale shark viewing. Several whale sharks (locally called butanding) naturally congregate around Donsol waters from December to May. Donsol practices responsible eco-tourism that does not alter the behavior of whale sharks. The local guides do not feed these animals for the sake of attracting them to the shore.

Usually, tourists need to sign up for a snorkeling boat tour to view the whale sharks in action. This Donsol whale shark tour boat will take passengers to the whale shark interaction area. The tour guide will teach you how to jump into the water and interact with the whale sharks. Swimming with whale sharks is considered a safe activity as these sea animals are known to be friendly and gentle.

Plan Your Trip to Sorsogon in Bicol

Drone shot of Tikling Island

Sorsogon is quite accessible from Manila via public transport. Several companies operate buses traveling between the metropolis and this province daily. Legazpi City in Albay is also a popular gateway to Sorsogon.

As an emerging tourist destination, more and more Sorsogon hotels and resorts are now opening up for travelers. The coastal areas have beachfront resorts, the inland areas have mountain resorts, while Sorsogon City has many Philippine hotels and guesthouses, which are popular among those traveling on a tighter budget.

Sorsogon City is a transport hub in the region and home to an adequate number of commercial facilities like supermarkets, banks, and restaurants. This city is a convenient base for exploring the attractions in the province.

Like other Philippine provinces, Sorsogon can offer the traveler pristine beaches, lush scenery, and natural attractions. But what makes Sorsogon appealing is its off-the-beaten-path characteristic. It is a great place to get away from the crowd and enjoy Filipino beauty without the bells and whistles.

SORSOGON ITINERARY for 2 Days (Island-Hopping Experience)

 alt=

Sorsogon is an exciting destination in the Bicol region. It boasts pristine beaches, historic sites, and even a hot spring! Proper planning is essential to fully experience these attractions.

There’s no need for concern, though. I’ll guide you through our two-day trip to Sorsogon . This journey took place in a few years ago when I participated in a group travel and met some wonderful new friends. We started our adventure by heading to the most distant part of Bicol, situated at the tip of Luzon. This is the town of Matnog , which houses the port for travelers bound for Samar, as well as other parts of Visayas and Mindanao. For a compact two-day trip, it’s advisable to rent a van. However, if you’re opting for a DIY route, you might need at least three days or possibly more.

Got the strategy for this journey? Start by traveling to the most remote location first and then work your way back, culminating in Albay before returning to Manila. Let’s begin.

DAY 1 : Islands of Matnog, Sorsogon

We traveled about 14 hours from Manila to Matnog. It was one of the longest land travels I have done recently. It was about 2 PM when we arrived in Matnog and went straight to our boatmen’s house (Contact Alex 09183045437) to prepare for the island hopping.

Matnog is blessed with tiny islands off its coast that are worth discovering with its pristine beaches. Our first stop is the island of Tikling.

Tikling island

The island derives its name from a bird called Tikling, which is abundant in the area. What immediately caught our attention upon arrival was its pinkish-white sand, a refreshing deviation from the usual pure white beaches we’re accustomed to.

Tikling Island Matnog Sorsogon Bicol

As Tikling is privately owned, no resorts have been established there. We only encountered one family who lived on the island as caretakers. On the other side of the island, both small and massive rock formations can be found. This destination is undoubtedly a must-visit when you’re in Matnog.

Juag Marine Sanctuary

A short distance from Tikling, we ventured into the inner parts of the smaller islands and stumbled upon a quaint lagoon. There stood a small house, owned by our guide. It turns out her father was the pioneer behind the marine sanctuary.

The sanctuary is home to an array of fishes, varying in color and size. We were fortunate enough to swim alongside these magnificent creatures. The Juag Marine Sanctuary serves as an essential initiative to conserve and propagate various fish species.

Subic Beach

By the time we reached Subic Beach, it was already late in the afternoon. To clarify, this isn’t the Subic in Olongapo! Haha

While many associate the name Subic with the popular Export Processing Zone and port, there’s another “Subic” nestled in Sorsogon that promises a tranquil summer retreat.

We camped on the beach for the night. The highlight, however, was the sumptuous dinner and bonding over drinks with fellow travelers. And, oh, did I mention this beach also has that unique pinkish-white sand? Intriguing, isn’t it? If these tales haven’t convinced you to visit Sorsogon yet, stay tuned for more travel stories from the following day.

Bulusan Lake

Recharged and revitalized by the hot spring, our next destination offered another exciting nature experience.

Bulusan Lake , located in the town of Bulusan, is a serene body of water. It’s so peaceful that there’s almost a mystical quality to it. This was particularly evident when I tried kayaking to the middle of the lake; the feeling was extraordinary. I’m not certain if this is what people refer to as a “connection with nature,” but every destination affects travelers differently. For someone like me, who often reflects deeply on my thoughts, Bulusan Lake holds a special place in my heart.

Barcelona Church and Ruins

I was eager to dig deeper into our history by visiting the church and ruins of Barcelona, Sorsogon. If you’re unfamiliar with the province, you might be surprised to discover that Spain isn’t the only country with a Barcelona. The Philippines has one too!

Barcelona Ruins Park Church Sorsogon

Upon alighting from the van, the Barcelona Ruins was the first site that caught my eye. After speaking with some tourism officers, they informed me that the early settlers of Barcelona were the tribal communities of Danlog, primarily hunters and fishermen.

In the early 1800s, the Spaniards arrived and took control of the entire community. They later named it “Barcelona” in honor of the then-capital town of Spain, Cataluna. Subsequently, they built the church located just across from the Ruins Park, which they named St. Joseph Church. Today, it’s commonly referred to as Barcelona Church and stands as one of the oldest churches in Bicol.

I had the opportunity to enter the church and offer a prayer. To be honest, praying in this church gave me a profound experience.

At that point in my life, I was still deeply mourning the loss of my father. I can’t quite explain it, but since then, I’ve come to view churches differently. Before, they were just new destinations to explore and learn about. Now, every church I visit becomes a place where I find solace in deep prayer.

Paguriran Island

As the late afternoon approached, we had one more spot in Sorsogon on our itinerary. To my delight, it quickly became one of my favorites!

Paguriran Island is situated just a few meters off the coast, close enough that you can walk to it during low tide. As we reached the island, we were greeted by a lagoon surrounded by lush greenery and crystal-clear waters.

Going to Paguriran Island

I once read a description saying the lagoon, when viewed from above, resembles a place where mystical creatures and mermaids might reside. Quite the thought, isn’t it?

I took a brief swim and then chose to climb to the island’s highest point. The view from there was breathtaking—showcasing both the mesmerizing lagoon and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean on the other side. Absolutely spectacular!

SORSOGON TOURIST SPOTS

Whenever I tell people I am from Sorsogon, I am often asked, “Where is Sorsogon?” or “What are the Sorsogon tourist spots? Or the things to do in Sorsogon?” These questions prompted me to blog about Sorsogon, to showcase the top places to see in Sorsogon.

Where exactly is Sorsogon? It is a province on the southeastern tip of Bicol Region, so if you are coming from Manila, you’ll find it after Albay.  Sorsogon is still part of Luzon and is composed of 14 towns and 1 city, which is its capital – Sorsogon City.  This largely bucolic province is mostly lapped by azure beaches, except for the land-locked municipality of Irosin.

I’ve known Magallanes since I was a kid, it’s my father’s hometown.  And one of the places that is pretty close to their house is Gibalon Church in Siuton, believed to be the site of the first mass in Luzon.  A few minutes away is a popular spot for swimming – Bucal-Bucalan Spring.  But perhaps my favorite tourist spot in Magallanes is Parola Beach located in Bagatao Island where we did field work for 3 months back in college for our Anthropology class.  Parola Beach is crowned by an age-old Spanish-era lighthouse, hence the name.  The beach here is white to cream sand and lapped by a swirling mix of emerald green and azure waters.  The place had a facelift recently and as per the Local Government Unit’s ordinance, the boat rental now from Magallanes port is PHP 2,000 (USD 40 / SGD 55) good for 6 persons.

Things to do in Cádiz

From historic buildings to sparkling blue waters, Cádiz offers a similar calibre of activities to Barcelona – but without the over-tourism.

The city’s top attraction is the Torre Tavira, an eighteenth-century watchtower that forms the highest point in the city.

For picturesque views of the sunshine coast, head to the terrace – where you can also see the Cádiz Camera Obscura, the first one installed in Spain.

Cádiz must-try

Want to fully immerse yourself in the Cádiz culture?

Try bienmesabe, a traditional dish in Andalusian cuisine made from cubes of dogfish, marinated and then fried. ¡Buen provecho!

To follow the city’s rocky coastline, take an afternoon stroll along Avenida Campo del Sur and finish at the cathedral.

Meanwhile, the Mercado Central offers a vibrant array of traditional Spanish food, from fresh seafood paella to tapas, whilst Playa Victoria and La Caleta Beach offer relaxation, largely undisturbed by noisy motorboats.

To learn about the local history, as well as fine arts and archaeology, the Museum of Cádiz is the perfect knowledge-broadening opportunity.

And, if you don’t mind a little excursion outside of the city, Setenil de las Bodegas, a 90 minutes drive away from Cádiz, and also goes by another name: The Cave Village. The town is nestled within a deep canyon, and large rock formations overhang the quaint white houses.

Cadiz

It’s around 25 to 30 minutes by car to the city centre, and well connected by public transport – just take the train four stops.

From Manchester, you can fly to Madrid and then change.
