The jagged peaks of Montserrat mountain make for Barcelona’s most popular day trip, and deservedly so. This sacred sierra looms up from the earth like a vast beast, its crenelated brow appearing like the thorny ridge of a dragon’s back on the horizon – indeed they say Gaudi based the roof of the Casa Batllo on this very mountain. Nestled under the peaks of this mountain range is Montserrat Abbey the home of the famous Black Madonna statuette and L’Escolania Boys’ Choir. On this unique tour you get to experience all of the above, plus wine tasting in a 10th century castle in the Pla de Bages wine region.

Setting off at 8:45 am every morning from Placa Catalunya (Barcelona’s central square), you are driven in comfort to the Monastery and given a fascinating guided tour of the grounds and the stunning basilica, where the sacred Black Madonna is kept (if you are religious you can even queue up to touch the holy relic). After your tour you have about two hours of free time, during which you’re free to explore the mountain. Options include taking the cable car up to St. Jerome’s Peak for spectacular views over Catalonia, hiking along the range to Santa Cova (the cave where the Black Madonna is said to have been found), or checking out the Montserrat Museum which has works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso, Dali and Miro amongst other luminaries. There’s also the chance to hear the angelic voices of the L’Escolania choir.

From Montserrat it’s a short visit to the Oller de Mas winery , where you’ll first enjoy a delicious four course Catalan lunch with wine, before taking a tour of the vineyards on your way to the ground’s medieval castle. At the castle you’ll enjoy a guided tasting of three of the winery’s finest wines. One white, one premium red, and one organic red wine. By now the sun will be setting over the vines, and it will be time to head back to Barcelona, tired, tipsy and very content.

Relax and enjoy the history and landscape of Montserrat in the morning   and learn how our most famous sparkling wine “cava” is made in Penedès wine land in the afternoon.

Our private driver will take us to both places in a tour of 8 hours.

Located just   59 km/ 37 miles away from Barcelona, we will drive up 740m / 2400 feet high contemplating the stunning rock formations that erosion has caused along the millions of years, a breath-taking landscape…

The fascinating history of Montserrat goes back to the ancient 9 th century when a group of shepherds found a hidden wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in one of the many caves hollowed out in these rocks. Since the 11 th century a community of Benedictine monks has taken care of this holy place in their monastery.

We can visit the Basilica where our famous “black virgin”   statue known as “la Moreneta”   , patroness of Catalans, is kept.

The other half of the day we will explore the fascinating world of cava and wine making in Penedès visiting one of the well-known wineries. Penedès is a wine region with a rich tradition of cava and wine making since the Roman Empire Times. It is located 43km / 27 miles away from Montserrat . An area extended between the Catalan coastal hills and the narrow plains of the Mediterranean coast.

26000 ha (64000 acres) of Penedès Appellation (D. O. Penedès) where traditional grape varieties are still being cultivated (Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Ull de Llebre…) next to other international noble ones that have been introduced and successfully acclimatized (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Merlot and Pinot Noir). The grapes grow from the coast level up till 800 m (2600 feet) above the sea level.

The Penedès climate includes a wide range of microclimates, but generally speaking it is a typically Mediterranean one. The harvest usually starts late in August and it finishes late in October, depending on the ripening of varieties.

A very well known Penedès product famous around the world is the Cava , the high quality sparkling wine produced according to the “Methode Champenoise” also known as the “traditional method”. “Cava” is the name given to this sparkling wine made in Catalonia, where a 90% of its production comes from Catalonia, especially from Penedès area. The Cava is ruled by the D. O. Cava. (Cava Origen Appellation).

Nowadaysother excellent sparkling wines producers have created a new brand : CORPINNAT , which is a collective European Union brand established with the aim of distinguishing great sparkling wines made in the heart of the Penedès from 100% organic grapes harvested by hand and entirely vinified on the premises of the winery.

And it is located not too far from the Penedès area: the wine country where cava, the local sparkling, is produced and one of the best wine regions near Barcelona. However, doing both on your own on the same day would be too tricky as there isn’t public transportation connecting both directly (it involves train connections).

Your guide will be translating for you in a low voice, in order not to disturb the rest of the visitors. Groups might also be larger than during the week, too, for the same reason.
• TOUR LENGHT : 8 hours.
• STARTING TIME : 8.30AM. This starting time is not flexible.
• WHERE DO WE MEET ?  WHERE DO WE END ? Anywhere you want, within the city limits.
• IS THERE A LUNCH STOP ? Yes. There’ll be a brunch paired with wine tastings at the cellar.
• HOW DO WE MOVE AROUND ? Rides in Mercedes car or minivan for upto 6 of you + guide & dedicated driver. Walking in Montserrat.
• IS THERE A DRESS CODE ? So far there’s no dress code required for the Montserrat Monastery , however we recommend dressing modestly to enter the Basilica. In the winter , Montserrat tends to be colder than Barcelona. Wear comfortable walking shoes if you are planning to hike. Inside the wineries  there’s a constant temperature of around 59ºF (15ºC). A light jacket is recommended in the Summer.
• DO WE GET TO SEE THE ESCOLANIA CHOIR IN MONTSERRAT ? No. Due to Due to the cellars opening hours, this tour is not compatible with seeing the Boys Choir in Montserrat. Check out our other Montserrat Tours if the Choir is a priority for you.
• HOW DOES THE NON-GUIDED OPTION WORK ? In our non-guided tours you are on your own. Your English-speaking driver might provide light conversation during the rides from Barcelona to Montserrat and the wine country and back, but you won’t get detailed explanations of the area. And once at the sites, you’ll be on your own. You’ll ultimately be responsible for getting back to the car at the agreed time, or you might incur in extra hours if you are late.

This Montserrat and Wine tour from Barcelona is great for those that want to see Montserrat as one of the top local destinations out of town, but also visit the wine country.

If you are traveling with kids , some wineries have grape juice for them during the gourmet wine tasting, but unless in your family you are a lot into wine and the kids are used to hearing about it all the time, you might want to skip the winery and go have lunch by the sea in Sitges after Montserrat  instead.

If you have walking issues or use a wheelchair , the driver is only used for the rides, but not in Montserrat or the winery. The Montserrat Monastery area and the basilica are wheelchair accessible and whenever there are steps they can be avoided. The Audiovisual and Exhibit, the Art Museum, the cafeteria, and the gift shops are accessible too. As for the winery, most of them have steep steps to get to the winery but we know a couple that are accessible: please let us know in advance so we can book with them for your convenience.

If you are traveling in the winter , please note that the weather up in the mountain is likely to be wet, cold and foggy. November through February we recommend warmer destinations that can be combined with the Wine Country such as  Tarragona  or  Sitges .

Montserrat is Barcelona’s number one day trip and the majesty of the crenellated mountains, upon which the sacred abbey was built, is deservedly world famous.

Whilst you can get to Montserrat by train it is surprisingly costly, which is just one reason why Barcelona Life recommends this full-bodied excursion, which not only provides comfortable transport to the “jagged mountain”, but also takes you to a local restaurant for a Catalan lunch, followed by a tour of a boutique winery and tasting of three premium wines.

The excursion leaves Barcelona city centre at 10am every day, arriving at Montserrat around 11:30am, thus giving you plenty of time to explore the mountain’s natural park, along with the abbey, which is home to the sacred Black Madonna statuette. With a little luck, you’ll be able to sneak in to hear the magical L’Escolania Boys’ Choir sing at 1pm.

After exploring Montserrat, there’s time for a leisurely three-course meal, before your are treated to a guided tour of the family-run Oller de Mas winery, and rolling vineyards. After getting a good insight into wine production, it’s time to enjoy a wine tasting session with an expert oenologist, where you’ll get to see just how good wines from this part of Spain are.

Ride to the Monastery on the Cogwheel Train

After arriving in the little village of Monistrol de Montserrat, you'll board the Cremallera de Montserrat—a cogwheel train that ascends the steep slope of the mountain. It's the only way to reach the monastery, and you'll enjoy majestic views as you climb into the clouds.

As soon as you arrive, you'll be swept up in the serene, peaceful atmosphere that surrounds the site.

Sanctuary of our Lady of Montserrat

This beautiful monastery sits in an incredible position on the mountainside, overlooking the Catalonian countryside below. Your guide will take you on a tour of the monastery's grounds, explaining the history that dates back to the 11th century, and giving an insight into the lives to the monks who have lived here over the centuries.

The monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, and also features a statue of the Virgin Mary. According to legend, the statue surfaced nearby during the 9th century. Some accounts claim that it may even be older, and the locals refer to it as the Moreneta or the "little dark one." 

Free Time to Explore

After your visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat, you'll have an hour of free time to explore the area before reuniting with the group and your guide and going to the winery. We recommend hiking over to Creus de Sant Miquel for a fantastic view of the monastery and the surrounding area.

What to bring?

We recommend a bottle of water and sunscreen. Outside of the summer months, it can be fairly cold at the top of the mountain. For this we definitely recommending bringing a light jacket.

Is lunch included?

Yes! A light lunch of tapas is included in the price of the tour. However, if you'd like to enjoy a full, three-course meal, then opt for the full full day Monserrat day trip .

Do we get to ride the train?

To get to the monastery, you'll enjoy a ride on the cogwheel train to get to the monastery. However, there is another funicular ride that goes further up the mountain from the monastery. That ride is not included, and there won't be enough time to book it on your own. However, there is time on this full day Monserrat day trip if you wanted extra time to explore on your own.

Will we get to see the Black Madonna?

The Black Madonna is an extremely popular artwork that attracts many visitors to Montserrat. That means there are often long lines to see her during most of the year. There usually isn't enough time for you to see the statue, but you can opt for our full day Monserrat day trip which gives you more time at the top of the mountain.

Your trip continues to Montserrat Mountain, a rock formation that rises abruptly from its flat surroundings to 1,236 meters. Enjoy a scenic ride on the rack railway up the mountain and arrive at the monastery, which has played an important role in Catalonia’s cultural and spiritual life for many centuries. The Benedictine abbey Santa Maria de Montserrat, whose history goes back to the 10th century, is famous for its image of the Virgin of Montserrat (the black virgin) and attracts until today pilgrims from all around the world. The monastery is also well-known for its boy's choir “Escolania de Montserrat”. Visit the choir’s music school, founded in the 12th century the oldest in Europe, and, with a bit of luck, hear the choir perform its daily Salve Regina before you head back to Barcelona.

Where is Montserrat ?

Montserrat Spain is located 60 km northwest of Barcelona. By car, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the city centre to the Monastery. 

Barcelona Montserrat can be reached by road but also by cable car or by the Ferrocarrils of the Generalitat de Catalunya, which bring you to the monastery. From there, you can reach the holy cave and San Juan by two funiculars. Several hiking trails have been laid out and provide access to other remains such as ancient hermitages, small churches, or monuments scattered and often abandoned in the surrounding mountains. A dream for trekking.

Visit Montserrat Monastery and Abbey

The Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat is situated on the mountain range of Montserrat in Catalonia. A place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. Legend says that on a Saturday evening in the year 880, pastors saw a powerful light coming down from the sky along with a beautiful melody. Angels cutting the Montserrat massif with a gold saw to shelter the statue of the Virgin and the abbey. A vision that was repeated four times in a row, always on Saturday. After learning of the event, a bishop organized a climb to Montserrat during which a cave was discovered where an image of the Virgin was found. The bishop then proposed to transfer her to Manresa, but as soon as they tried to transfer her, she became so heavy that they could not move her. The man of the Church interpreted this fact as the will of the Blessed Virgin to remain in this place and decided to build a chapel on the site.

Today we visit at Montserrat : the Monastery, the Plaça de l'Abat Oliba, the Plaça de Santa Maria, the square in front of the basilica, the basilica, the Virgin's room, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Santa Cova and the Holy Cave.

Information about Penedès wine and the famous Catalan Champagne: The Cava! 

The Penedès wine you will have the pleasure of tasting during your visit to Montserrat is a Spanish wine with a protected designation of origin (DO).

Its vineyards, which lie between the Mediterranean Sea and the Montserrat massif, are located between Barcelona and Tarragona. Introduced by the Phocaeans, developed by the Romans who marketed it for its red grape varieties, it is finally to the monastic orders, mainly the Benedictines and the Cistercians, for whom wine is indispensable for the celebration of the Eucharist that we owe its journey in the centuries before arriving on our contemporary tables.

The Penedés has been known since 1872 with the production of sparkling wines. Using the traditional method of Champagne, the region produces a wine called Cava . The commercial wine-growing development of the penedès is strongly linked to that of the cava. Today the winemaking and marketing operations are concentrated by cooperative wineries and private companies, the bodegas. Among the most famous bodegas we can quote: Torres, Codorniu and Oller del Mas will visit... Have a nice tasting!

My husband found this tour and booked with Pavel for my 30th birthday. It was absolutely the best day of our trip to Spain as well as the best way I could have imagined turning 30. We started at the Castelriog Winery which was absolutely stunning. The cava, wines, and fuet were some of the best either one of us has ever had. By far, this family run winery was a highlight of the trip to Spain Then we had a perfect lunch in the countryside eating some of the best rabbit, duck, and pate. Being that it was my birthday Pavel even got me a small chocolate cake with candles to blow out. So thoughtful and what an easy comfortable person to spend our day with. We ended the day with a truly moving visit to Monserrat Mountain. Make sure you take the hike, given the option. We ended the day overlooking the monastery while sipping on some Castelriog cava. The last thing I must mention is the cathedral. By far one of the most breath taking cathedrals I’ve ever been in. Moving even. I cannot reccomebd this tour enough, Pavel was so great and the entire tour was thoughtful, nothing was rushed and was very high class! (From TripAdvisor)
