Allianz Arena is Europe’s biggest stadium with surrounding outdoor LED lighting for dynamic mood lighting.

Earlier, the stadium could only project three colors – red, blue, and white.

However, by the end of 2014, Allianz Arena installed new LED lighting on the facade, producing 16 million different colors.

The Allianz Arena gets illuminated for approximately three hours from sunset on non-matchdays.

The Munich stadium also lights up on certain evenings to celebrate special events.

More than 300,000 LED lights — over a surface area of 26,000 square meters — light up the stadium facade’s inflatable outer membrane.

The authorities have also introduced lighting to enhance the action on the pitch inside the Allianz Arena.

For example, a Mexican wave can be created to celebrate a goal during the match.

Check out how FC Bayern Munich celebrated Christmas with a lighting show inside the stadium.

FC Bayern Munich and their opponents TSV 1860 Munich used the city’s Olympic Stadium as their home ground.

In the mid-1990s, the clubs decided that the Olympiastadion built for the 1972 Summer Olympics would no longer be enough.

They had two options – reconstruct the Olympiastadion or build a new stadium.

The stadium’s foundation stone was laid on 21 Oct 2002, and construction got completed on 30 Apr 2005.

It was in time for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron built the soccer stadium at the cost of €340 million.

The first official match held was a game between TSV 1860 Munchen and against FC Nuremberg.

Allianz, the financial services provider, secured the new stadium’s naming rights and signed a 30-year sponsorship deal.

And that is the reason why this football stadium in Munich is referred to as Allianz Arena.

Check out this Allianz Arena 360 panorama tour if you want to explore the stadium from your armchair.

Construction

The Allianz Arena, home of FC Bayern Munich, is a football stadium in Munich, Germany. Construction on the stadium began in 2002, with the design by renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. The stadium was completed in 2005 and has since been a popular venue for football matches and other events.

The arena was designed with the fans in mind, as expressed by Franz Beckenbauer: “Watching football should be fun and a great experience for everyone.” This led to the creation of a football-specific stadium with a unique design featuring a diamond-shaped exterior.

Since its opening in 2005, the Allianz Arena has hosted numerous significant events, including:

  • FC Bayern Munich’s home games in both domestic and international competitions, such as the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
  • TSV 1860 Munich’s participation in the UEFA Cup.
  • The 2006 FIFA World Cup matches that took place in Germany, with the Allianz Arena hosting several matches including group stage games and a semifinal.

In 2014, Allianz SE became shareholders of FC Bayern München AG, securing the naming rights for the Arena until 2041, representing a long-term partnership between the club and the insurance company.

Additionally, in November 2014, it was announced that the Allianz Arena was “completely paid off,” as stated by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Initially, the financial plan was set up for 25 years, however, the stadium’s debt was cleared in only nine.

The Allianz Arena, located in Munich, Germany, is the home stadium of Bayern Munich and an architectural marvel. Designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, the stadium opened its doors in May 2005, replacing Munich’s old Olympic Stadium as the new home for both Bayern Munich (1 Bundesliga) and TSV 1860 Munich (2 Bundesliga).

The design of the Allianz Arena focuses on creating a unique and futuristic interpretation of the basic football stadium concept. Boasting a seating capacity of 69,901, the stadium features a magnificent façade made up of a membrane shell. This 66,500sqm shell comprises 2,784 air cushions that emit an ethereal glow during matches and events, setting a new precedent in stadium design.

In addition to its striking exterior, the Allianz Arena has been meticulously designed to enhance the overall experience for both spectators and athletes. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities, such as large video screens and comfortable seating arrangements, which ensure a matchless view for spectators. Additionally, the stadium includes multiple restaurants, bars, and shops, providing an all-inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere for visitors.

Functionality is also central to the design of the Allianz Arena. The stadium was built with the flexibility to accommodate various sporting events and concerts, being able to transform from a football stadium to a unique event space. Moreover, the design intricately considers the needs of disabled visitors, offering enhanced accessibility and provisions for a comfortable experience.

Collaboratively, Herzog & de Meuron, along with contractors Alpine Bau Deutschland GmbH, Arup, and Sailer Stepan and Partners, Munich, have succeeded in creating a groundbreaking and iconic structure that stands as a testament to sports architecture and innovation in stadium design.

Originally, the Allianz Arena was shared by both FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich. However, due to financial issues in 2006, 1860 Munich sold its 50 percent stake in the stadium to Bayern Munich for €11 million, making it the sole home of FC Bayern Munich.

Why no Bayern Munich fans are allowed inside Emirates Stadium for Arsenal Champions League clash

Arsenal have a massive advantage for their Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich tonight

The Champions League quarter-finals are upon us and for the first time in 14 years Arsenal fans are looking forward to seeing their team in action.

The hunt for a first Premier League title in 20 years goes on pause for the time being, with the Gunners aiming to reach the last four of the Champions League . Tonight they take on old foes Bayern Munich , looking to end a run of three straight 5-1 defeat to the German giants. It's a tough ask for Mikel Arteta 's team, but now could be the best time to face the Bavarians.

Bayern are going to miss out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 years, with Bayer Leverkusen one win away from wrapping up the title. They lost 3-2 to Heidenheim at the weekend to all-but hand the crown to Leverkusen.

And there's another good reason to be taking on Bayern now too - there will be no German fans inside the Emirates Stadium for the first leg tonight. Arsenal's ground will be full to the brim with Gunners supporters, with the Gunners hierarchy issuing a threat to any fans planning to sell their tickets to Bayern supporters .

That is because UEFA have given Munich supporters a stadium ban for throwing flares onto the pitch during their last 16 clash with Lazio. UEFA handed Bayern a fine of €40,000 in October for doing the same thing and were warned of a stadium ban if it happened again.

Speaking about the prospect, Bukayo Saka said: "A stadium full of Gooners! I'm excited, all with the boys excited so we need to recover and be ready for Tuesday."

Mikel Arteta's team made it to the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years after defeating Porto in a penalty shootout in the last 16. Bayern had a more straightforward path, beating Lazio 3-1 on aggregate in the previous round.

They will face either Real Madrid or Manchester City in the semi-final if they overcome Thomas Tuchel's side.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreese said: "We have to accept this punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off, but also fired deliberately onto the field, directly endangering bystanders.

"This was such an explicit violation of the conditions of probation that an appeal is unfortunately futile. The fact we now have to play away without the support of our fans is a big blow. A small group of individual offenders have done a disservice to all our supporters and the team."

Highlights | Arsenal 2-2 Bayern Munich

We battled from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Bayern Munich, after Bukayo Saka had given us an early lead.

Former Gunner Serge Gnabry and top scorer Harry Kane both netted for Bayern to turn the game on its head before half-time, but Leandro Trossard netted after fine work from Gabriel Jesus to level.

The game ended in controversial fashion, when Saka was denied a strong penalty shout, so it’s all square heading into the second leg next week.

Bitesize highlights are available now, with an extended edit and the full 90 minutes to follow soon.

Trossard – I gave Gabby a shout!

Leandro Trossard scored again in a home game in the Champions League – making it four goals in four appearances at Emirates Stadium this season – and it’s a goal that sends us to Munich next week still well in the tie.

The Belgian came on in the second half and coolly tucked home a first-time shot to make it 2-2 on the night, and ensure we go into the second leg all square with the German side.

But after taking the lead in the opening quarter of an hour, Trossard said there were plenty of regrets on the night.

“It’s a mixed feeling [in the dressing room] I would say. I think we started so well in the first 15 minutes; we could have been up by two or three goals. And then you can see their quality as well, especially up front, their individual qualities, they’re so strong, especially on the counter-attack, and that’s where they hurt us today.

“At the end I think we’re happy obviously with the equaliser, it brings us back on equal terms and then we have to do it there.”

Trossard’s equaliser was his 13th of the season, after he combined brilliantly with fellow sub Gabriel Jesus.

“He dribbled his way through and the moment he was in the box, I shouted his name because I knew I was free,” Leo said. “Luckily he saw me, and it’s the perfect goal for us – it was a great feeling.

“I think every footballer wants to play at the highest level, and the Champions League is that, especially in front of your home fans, it’s always nice. I’m happy with that.”

Now he’s looking ahead to the return match on Wednesday, knowing everything is still to play for as we look to make it through to the Champions League semi-final for the first time in 15 years.

“I think it will be a tough game there as well, they’ve shown today how they can hurt us so I think we need work on that for next week and to be honest, I think if we’re at our top level, we can beat them. I think maybe on the ball today, that wasn’t the case so we know what we’re going to work on, but hopefully we can finish it there.

“The confidence is really high, even without the game today. We’ve been playing so well in the last few weeks and months, and it’s just nice that we had the equaliser as well, I think it was so important to go to Munich and have that result, so it’s all to play for.”

FC Bayern Munich & Los Angeles Football Club Launch Joint Venture To Develop Talent

FCB_LAFC_16x9_Post_Web[39][34][85]

FC Bayern Munich and Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) have today announced a global soccer development cooperation, named “Red&Gold Football”, which will provide a platform for young talent featuring high-level development and a pathway to first team soccer. The initiative sees the European powerhouse and reigning Major League Soccer champions set up a joint venture based in Munich.

“A partnership of this magnitude is the next step in our evolution as a Club,” LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington said. “We are extremely excited to work together with FC Bayern to identify and develop young talent in Southern California and beyond and believe this relationship will provide players throughout our systems the ability to maximize their potential and see a clear pathway to first team football.”

FC Bayern and LAFC each own 50 percent of the shares "Red&Gold Football". The joint venture envisions further cooperation with other football clubs and development academies throughout the world as part of a global development initiative.

"FC Bayern will expand its promotion of young talent with Los Angeles Football Club. On an international level, soccer is developing rapidly, which is also evident in the transfer market. We see this partnership as an opportunity to strengthen FC Bayern in the sporting competition with the best clubs in Europe and the Bundesliga. The fact that the 2026 World Cup will largely take place in the USA, where we already have an office in New York, makes Los Angeles even more attractive. I expect a boost in quality and young talent in Major League Soccer, which will have a positive impact on our partnership," said Oliver Kahn, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Management at FC Bayern.

FC Bayern Munich opened its first international office in New York in 2014 with the ambition to help support the growth of soccer and support the level of the game in North America. Following the success of the first international venture, the club opened an office in Shanghai in March 2017 and Bangkok in April 2022.

"The cooperation with Los Angeles Football Club gives us the chance to develop talent internationally within our own system. Our campus, which remains at the heart of FC Bayern's youth development, will also benefit, Hasan Salihamidzic, FC Bayern's Chief Sports Officer said.  “In the future, we will be able to offer our young players a career path that is even better tailored to them and thus a better transition into our professional teams and professional soccer. This makes FC Bayern more attractive as a youth development club."

“This is a truly special moment for LAFC,” LAFC Co-President & CBO Larry Freedman said. “We look forward to working together with our partner FC Bayern to not only develop talent and continue to grow our sport and our brand on the global stage, but to share best practices and improve our organizations off the pitch as well.”

The 2022 MLS Cup Champion, LAFC has represented the greater Los Angeles area in MLS since 2018. The two-time Supporters Shield Champions are dedicated to building a world-class Club that represents the diversity of Los Angeles and is committed to delivering an unrivaled experience for fans. Since 2018, LAFC has won more regular season matches than any MLS club and sold out every single regular season and playoff game.

Why Bayern Munich fans are banned from Arsenal clash at Emirates Stadium

Arsenal fans

Bayern Munich head to Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night, but they will do so without the support of their away fans.

It is the first leg of the huge last eight tie, with the Premier League leaders hoping to take advantage of Bayern’s surprisingly poor form.

Thomas Tuchel’s side have lost their last two Bundesliga matches and are a huge 16 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, with the decision already made that the former Chelsea boss will leave at the end of the season .

The Champions League is now their only realistic hope to salvage their season, so they will not be short of motivation, but they will be short of support in north London.

Why are there no away fans at the Arsenal vs Bayern Munich game tonight?

That is because Bayern fans threw fireworks onto the pitch during their 1-0 defeat to Lazio in Rome during the first leg of their last 16 tie in February.

The same offence had occurred during the trip to FC Copenhagen in October and bayern were given a suspended one-match ban and a £30,000 fine, so the second incident in Italy has led to fans being banned from the away trip to London.

The Mirror report that Arsenal have warned their own fans that selling tickets to away supporters will result in them being banned.

Bayern Munich fans at Lazio

Bayern winger Leroy Sane, formally of Manchester City said of the situation: ‘Obviously it’s annoying, it’s frustrating. You want to to have your fans with you and give something back to them.

‘Tomorrow the situation is different, they’re not here but we still want to do our best, play well and give something back to the fans even though they’re not here.’

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. said: ‘We have to accept this punishment. Not only were pyrotechnics set off, but also fired deliberately onto the field, directly endangering bystanders.

‘This was such an explicit violation of the conditions of probation that an appeal is unfortunately futile.

‘The fact we now have to play away without the support of our fans is a big blow.

Champions League picks for Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal

Before you tune in to Tuesday's match, you need to see the UEFA Champions League picks from SportsLine soccer expert Martin Green . After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Since the World Cup, Green has been profitable in multiple areas on his soccer picks, including the Champions League (+4.78 units), the FA Cup (+3.07), the EFL Cup (+3.64), Euro 2024 qualifiers (+3.01) and the Europa League (+1.60).

For Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich, Green is picking Arsenal on the money line for a -115 payout. The Gunners have blanked all of their Champions League opponents this season when they play at the Emirates, winning 4-0 against PSV, 2-0 against Sevilla, 6-0 against Lens and 1-0 against Porto leading up to the quarterfinals. They have also won 12 of their 15 league matches at home, so that sets them up nicely to host a struggling Bayern side.

Green acknowledges the wealth of talent the Bavarians have on their roster and the wisdom and experience they have in a manager like Thomas Tuchel. However, his message to the defense has gotten lost and Bayern is conceding goals at a high rate, allowing 36 over 28 games.

"That is concerning for Bayern, as Arsenal boasts very dangerous wingers," Green told SportsLine.  Stream the game here  and  check out full soccer coverage on CBS Sports Golazo Network .
