Ben Howard Cancels Upcoming North America ‘IS IT?’ Tour
Ben Howard’s upcoming ‘IS IT?’ tour will no longer go on as planned.
The English indie singer took to X Tuesday morning to announce the news, citing personal reasons.
“It has been an impossibly difficult decision to arrive at but due to personal reasons at this time we are unable to make the trip West,” Howard said. “We know that many of you will have already made your travel arrangements and will suffer the double disappointment. We are really sorry to let so many down but hopefully we can make it up to you all in 2024.”
Howard noted that all tickets will be automatically funded via point of purchase.
The North America tour was slated to kick-off on October 20 in Washington, D.C., hitting cities along the way like Toronto, Denver, New York, Vancouver, and Boston before wrapping-up in Los Angeles on November 15.
Howard was set to tour in support of his 2023 sixth studio record Is It? , which featured tracks “Couldn’t Make It Up” and “Walking Backwards.” Every Kingdom , Howard’s 2011 debut, helped put him on the map with singles “The Wolves” and “Keep Your Head Up.”

‘It felt like a falling apart’: Ben Howard on returning to music after two strokes
When he suffered two mini-strokes last year, the singer-songwriter felt like ‘the world was pouring in’. But the experience has fuelled his most fluid, experimental album yet
L azing in his Ibiza garden one afternoon last spring, Ben Howard experienced what he calls “a strange interlude”. Without warning, for an hour, the Brit award-winning singer-songwriter completely lost his ability to speak.
“All my other senses became really heightened,” he says, via video call from the dressing room of the Coliseu do Porto, where he’s playing later. “It was an overload of information, like the whole world was pouring in at once. I felt really hypersensitive to everything: the light, and the sound of the trees, and the leaves, and the wind … I was still compos mentis, but I didn’t have the words to explain it. It was over in an hour. And then, a month later, it happened again.”
Howard later learned that he had suffered two transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs), also known as mini-strokes. He describes them now as “a before-and-after moment” that profoundly shaped his fifth album, Is It?. Working with Nathan Jenkins, AKA Bullion, a DJ-producer who first won notoriety layering Beach Boys samples over J Dilla-style beats , Howard has created a record where his voice and guitar interact with inventive electronic elements, manipulated vocal samples and atmospheric drum-machine programming, to “create the story of that experience”.
This new music is a far cry from the earnest folk with which Howard began his career, scoring a Mercury prize nomination with his 2011 double-platinum debut, Every Kingdom. That album was steeped in the influences his parents had schooled him in when he was growing up in Devon – classic singer-songwriters like Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young and Van Morrison. His favourite, however, was troubled, mercurial maverick John Martyn. “I’m still in love with his records,” Howard says. “My whole guitar setup is ripped off John Martyn’s early 70s rig.”
Two years later, Howard won best British male and British breakthrough act at the Brits, while his second album, 2014’s I Forget Where We Were, topped the UK charts. Success didn’t make Howard very happy, however. In interviews, he bristled at being mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Ed Sheeran and Paolo Nutini, and developed a reputation for tetchiness. “It didn’t have a hugely positive impact on me, if I’m honest,” he says now. “Every artist gets put through the same churning machine when it’s at that scale. It was all quite quick and full-on, and it made me quite guarded and suspicious.”
Feeling hemmed in by the expectations of the industry and his fanbase, Howard says that he grew “creatively restless. I’m always scrambling for new ideas. I have a lot of trouble with what is expected of me, in terms of records. The most difficult thing in creating music is this craving from others for familiarity, a feeling of ownership over you.”
Recent albums have seen Howard try to shake loose those expectations. For 2021’s Collections from the Whiteout, he worked with Aaron Dessner of the National, having fallen under the spell of Big Red Machine , Dessner’s starry collaboration with Bon Iver. “I just loved the sound of their records,” Howard says. “I was quite honest about it: I just wanted to make a record like that.”
Dessner’s approach, the antithesis of his own in the studio, proved a tonic. “Aaron was loose, not fussy. He was really proactive, encouraging me to explore. I’ve overthought previous records, and drawn some of the energy out of them. But with Aaron, I didn’t have to get it right the first time; I could throw things around and see what happened. He’d run drum machines through iPhones!”
Still, for all the experimentation of that collaboration, Is It? marks an emphatic paradigm shift for Howard. “This one was spontaneous, fluid,” he nods, adding that he relished Bullion “presenting me with directions I wouldn’t have thought of myself, these serendipitous moments when we found each other, creatively.” While Howard and Bullion came from different musical worlds, they found much common ground, bonding over a shared obsession with Martyn and working a sample from Linda Thompson’s first solo album into the song Days of Lantana. “I was enamoured with what we were making, and made a decision not to undermine it early on,” Howard says. “We did most of the work on this record in 10 days.”
While he had already begun work on the album before the mini-strokes, the experience “fed into the writing. Lyrically, it was hard to avoid,” he says. “I wrote these songs to see if my faculties could actually maintain the act of songwriting. There was a fear I wouldn’t be able to write songs any more. I was struggling with memory in the fallout of the TIAs, struggling with words, and I was quite tired. But the songs came, and when they did, it was clear that this experience was preoccupying me constantly.”
Is It? is no grim account of a near-death experience. Total Eclipse, a disorientating 90-second interlude matching broken fragments of speech to looped samples and abstract sounds, “recreated the feeling of the experience itself”, he says. “People told me they weren’t sure about it, that it made them uncomfortable. And I realised that was the point, and it was OK.” But while the spectre of mortality is present on songs such as Days of Lantana (where he sings “days are numbered”) and Richmond Avenue, about cherished early childhood memories with his father, Howard says that on this album he is “writing about life, love and the savouring of it. I’ve written records about apathy and depression and heavy subjects,” he says. “This is not that, it’s more an outpouring of affection for people and places.”
The powerlessness he felt in the face of the TIAs, he says, fuelled the gently philosophical nature of songs such as Spirit, which is about “how much choice we actually have in the direction of our lives. I just found it incredible that one slight anomaly, a little cell in your brain, can undo this human that you have built over so many years. That it could put you right back to existing in a world that’s simply feelings. If memory is gone, life becomes a very different experience.”
While tests to ascertain what caused the attacks proved inconclusive, Howard says his lifestyle is at least a little healthier than before: he’s a non-smoker now. His darkest moment came when he visited the stroke clinic after the second attack and saw “people who’d had full strokes, people with complete, permanent loss of speech, a loss of faculties. That was quite terrifying.” His relationship with his own mini-strokes, however, is almost sanguine. Rather than an ordeal, these still-unexplained attacks have been for Howard a learning experience, a chance to reacquaint himself with the fragility of life.
“A flood of anxiety came with the first attack – it felt like a falling apart,” he says. “But the second time, when I knew what was happening, I was more comfortable. For an hour, I just existed in a world of confusion, light, sound and feelings.” He grins. “My partner and I had a laugh with it; I tried to read her the text on a cereal box, but all that came out were random words. I was able to sit and wonder about this rogue thing that was happening. It was a brief glimpse into something really strange and surreal.”
He says he doesn’t know if the attacks and his recovery have changed him hugely. “That’s perhaps a question to ask the people around me,” he says. “But I feel more positive and I enjoy small things a lot more; just sitting in the park the other day was very nice. I don’t know if I would have spent time doing that before.” He sighs. “I would probably just have been smoking.”
Is It? is out now.

Howard says the cancellation is for ‘personal reasons.’
“We know that many of you will have already made your travel arrangements and will suffer the double disappointment,” reads the post. “We are really sorry to let so many down but hopefully can make it up to you all in 2024.”
The 36-year-old Howard was set to perform in Laval, Toronto and Vancouver at Orpheum Theatre on Nov. 7. All of the shows in the United States have also been cancelled which included Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Seattle.
All tickets will be automatically refunded, according to the post.

Following a series of inconclusive hospital tests, Ben headed back to France and put all of his focus and much of his soul into creating one of his most upbeat and uplifting records in years.

A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.
“I’m very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100,” Jones enthused. “Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night! Bring your celebratory selves to the party.”
Popular on Variety
Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called “Second British Invasion” dominated the channel. Jones’ hits “New Song” and “What Is Love,” and “Things Can Only Get Better” probably segued into or out of ABC’s “Look of Love,” “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me” and Haircut 100’s “Love Plus One” and “Fantastic Day.”
All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.

Howard university’s 18th president ben vinson iii, ph.d. shares key insights and lessons from campus community gatherings.
WASHINGTON – Today, Howard University released its “Bison Engagement Tour Report,” a comprehensive report detailing key insights from President Ben Vinson III’s campus-wide Bison Engagement Tour. Launched in September 2023 at the start of his tenure at Howard, the tour included meetings with all 14 schools and colleges, the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, the Howard University Student Association (HUSA), Faculty Senate, and the Board of Trustees. These gatherings provided President Vinson first-hand insights on the state of the University and identified opportunities for continued growth.

Reflecting on the tour, President Vinson emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in realizing his ambitious vision for Howard.
“My conversations across campus highlighted Howard’s resilience and commitment to excellence. Together, we stand poised to forge a path that honors our storied legacy while also embracing the limitless possibilities of tomorrow,” President Vinson said. “Our journey ahead is illuminated with promise, and I am humbled to lead such an extraordinary community toward a bright and transformative future.”
The Bison Engagement Tour Report highlights community feedback across five priorities: enhancing student success; elevating research and learning; advancing engagement and University communications; improving operational efficiency and effectiveness; and sustaining financial strength. Informed by insightful dialogues from the tour, this report not only celebrates University achievements but also serves as a roadmap for President Vinson’s strategic outlook.
Key feedback outlined in the report includes:
Enhancing Student Success: The Bison Engagement Tour highlighted Howard University's superior academic standards and positive student outcomes, showcased by innovative programs that provide students with more opportunities for professional growth and development. Groups across schools and colleges emphasized the need to address student-to-instructor ratios, continue investments in academic programs, and enhance the use of cross-campus resources. President Vinson plans to thoroughly assess academic programs and bolster investments in faculty and student resources to further cultivate an environment of unparalleled academic excellence and inclusiveness.
Elevating Research and Learning: Howard's achievements in research and innovation stand out as key markers of success as a leading HBCU. Further, with significant increases in research funding and the establishment of the University Affiliated Research Center (UARC ), Howard is on the cusp of returning to R1 research classification. Community feedback urged President Vinson to expand faculty and student research opportunities, provide more hybrid and off-campus learning opportunities, enhance collaborations with other leading research institutions and industry partners, and facilitate collaboration between schools and colleges. These conversations reinforced President Vinson’s commitment to advancing University scholarship and supporting students and faculty to pursue innovative research.
Advancing Engagement and University Communications: Howard's mission to serve the Black community through education, health, economic, and social empowerment is alive and well across campus. In March 2024, Howard celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Alternative Spring Break program , which received a record 2,100 applicants. Our robust partnerships with leading foundations and organizations, notably our collaboration with the PNC Foundation, continue to enhance our service initiatives by boosting resources and support for Black business owners nationwide. A common theme across the tour cohorts was a desire for increased transparency and communication from the presidential administration and campus leadership. Under the leadership of President Vinson, Howard is deepening community engagement and enhancing communication, fostering a culture of transparency and support. Over the coming months, President Vinson will continue engaging with the Howard community through regular touch points such as town halls and in-person meetings to build a more transparent, responsive, and efficient administration that supports the University’s mission and strategic goals.
Improving Operational Efficiency and Effectiveness: President Vinson considers operational efficiency and effectiveness as “critical aspects” of his strategic vision. The University is currently undergoing its largest capital real estate initiative – a $785 million Campus Master Plan – which significantly accelerated the construction of new academic centers and improved administrative services. The Master Plan will revitalize Howard’s campus and ensure that our facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and resources to prepare our students for the workplaces and challenges of the future. Further, the University is bolstering campus housing and institutional management to meet the needs of a growing student body. President Vinson will continue to incorporate feedback from the campus community to assess administrative and infrastructure challenge areas to implement strategies that will improve the Howard experience.
Sustaining Financial Strength: In the last decade, Howard reversed deficits totaling $100 million and regained financial stability. President Vinson has set his sights on strengthening the University’s financial outlook, ensuring that our current and future community have the necessary resources to succeed. Tour cohorts emphasized the importance of the University’s leadership maintaining open dialogues with faculty and students about Howard’s financial status and outlook. Participants also suggested reassessing University policies to better align financial strategies in service of all schools and colleges, and developing clearer guidelines for grant application and management, particularly for non-STEM fields.
These conversations are necessary to reflect, engage, and plan with intention, ensuring that our future direction is aligned with the needs and aspirations of the Howard community. Under President Vinson's leadership, the University is set to continue its remarkable journey, making significant contributions to society and forward the development of scholars and professionals who drive change.
