8 Ways to have the Best Pictured Rocks Kayaking tour

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: things to do

You know that old cliche, “the pictures don’t do it justice?” Yeah, I thought that was silly before I visited some of nature’s masterpieces. Taking a Pictured Rocks kayaking tour is an absolute must-do!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking

Upper Peninsula Michigan Pictured Rocks Kayaking

I’m certain you’ve seen photos of this magnificent place and you’re probably thinking how gorgeous it is. How amazing the pictures are. How they couldn’t possibly be more picturesque in person than they are on film.

Ummmm.  I was in awe the entire trip! Honestly! The entire time I was at Pictured Rocks kayaking all I could think of was how lucky I was to witness it. And not to mention in the capacity that I did.

So I’ve taken a few photos…more like 358 but I won’t bore you or bog down this site with that many. Besides, you need to go do your own Pictured Rocks kayaking tour to fully appreciate it.

Breathe in the beauty and behold the vastness before you.

I purchased this Pictured Rocks kayaking tour as a birthday present for Bob back in January. We’ve gotten to a point in our marriage that we both prefer experiences over stuff. We have an appetite for adventure…and when I say we I really mean me. And Bob, being the loving hubby that he is, plays along.

I’m not sure if it was the Travel Channel, Pinterest, Instagram or maybe even those ancient encyclopedias I had as a kid that gave me a wanderlust spirit. Or perhaps it was always buried within. All I can say is I’ve been bitten by the adventure bug and there’s no going back! With so many wonders in this world we should feel lucky to live in a time that we could seriously go anywhere.

Whether to a faraway land or right here in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan…of course this could be a faraway land for some of you, so that just means you better get planning!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour

Pictured Rocks Kayaking along Lake Superior shore

Tip #1 Know before you go!

First you should know that I would not recommend venturing out into Lake Superior without a guide, especially if you’re inexperienced. The kayaks required to navigate large bodies of water, such as these, are not your everyday “sit-on-top” river boats.

Tandem sea kayaks with splash skirts, life vests and a few of the necessities  then you’re good to go!

Launching from Miner’s Beach

Tip #2 Watch the weather!

We had our trip planned for a specific day but our good ole’ Michigan weather couldn’t resist trying to throw a wrench in our plans with a wicked cold front so with a quick schedule rearrangement, we found ourselves enjoying one of the best days of the summer.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking next to the shoreline

Tip #3 Be aware of detours!

There are a number of Pictured Rocks kayaking tour companies. None of them are in the location that you actually paddle from. Typically you are directed to a check in then given directions to a meet up location where you’ll be bused to your launch destination. Hmmm, that was a mouthful!

So with summertime comes road work and with road work comes detours. In other words, show up early!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking a break on the river

Tip #4 Pack light but don’t forget anything!

From snacks and water to quick-dry clothes and special shoes (which I wished we’d had for the shore lunch break!),  don’t forget the necessities!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking break at Mosquito Beach

Mosquito Beach…I didn’t get bit once!

Pictured Rocks Kayaking taking a break on the shore

Crystal clear waters of Lake Superior, ICE COLD TOO! And that’s not soft sand but instead sandstone, fragile but firm…and sharp sometimes.

Tip #5 Bang for your buck!

Get the most out of your trip by taking the longer paddle. Our tour, from starting at the beach to the very end, was about 6 or 7 hours. Yes, it was a long day but we had an incredible shore lunch at Mosquito Beach, where we had a chance to stretch our legs and explore.

We made it all the way down to the famous Lovers Leap Arch, got up close and personal with some sea caves and then squeezed through a tiny crevice called “Kissing Rock” – although that’s now questionable because said kisser fell to its watery depths.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking into the arch

Tip #6 Stay close to your guide!

And not necessarily because you’ll get lost or because of some safety measure (of course this is always priority). But because they are experts in pointing out fascinating structures, how they were formed, underwater shipwrecks and even interesting sea life.

Our guide was a wealth of knowledge and I enjoyed soaking up every bit of the info he was offering. And here’s a side tip for this tip…tip your tour guide at the end of your trip if you feel he or she is worthy. It’s just the right thing to do! Plus they work really hard! Although, I must admit I’m a bit jealous…

Pictured Rocks Kayaking along the rocks

Tip #7 Another beautiful option!

I couldn’t have imagined a site so stunning. Its shear awesomeness and enormity. Something over a billion years old, in such perfect condition to be gazed upon at this very moment in time.

There I go getting all sentimental…

If you find yourself in a position that you’re unable to see these gorgeous giants by kayak, you certainly should not miss out. There are plenty of cruise tours available. But do yourself a favor and get yourself a SUNSET SAIL!  I hear it’s even better when the warm light from the evening shines upon the stone creating colors that are even more vibrant than they already were.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour Review (Tips For Your Visit)

If you’re aiming for one of the most immersive Pictured Rocks experiences, a kayaking tour is undoubtedly one of the top choices. From paddling beneath colossal arches to navigating through narrow caves, this adventure promises unforgettable memories and some of the clearest water you’ll find.

In this article, I’ll provide you with all the essential information on booking a Pictured Rocks kayaking tour, along with some valuable tips to truly elevate your experience.

Table of Contents

Pictured Rocks Overview

Pictured Rocks, one of just three national lakeshores, stands out for its breathtaking multicolored sandstone cliffs, formed as mineral-rich waters permeate the rocks and trickle over the cliff faces, leaving behind a vivid display of hues.

The colors you see correspond to different minerals such as: iron (red and orange), copper (blue and green), manganese (brown and black), and limonite (white).

There’s also a lot of cultural history here as Native American tribes, including the Ojibwa and Ottawa, have long inhabited this region, and their cultural presence is deeply woven into its landscape. Furthermore, European explorers and fur traders ventured along these shores in the 17th century, leaving their own mark on the history of the area.

In total, this remarkable coastline stretches for an impressive 42 miles and while popular for hiking and boar cruises, it’s also renowned as one of the nation’s premier kayaking destinations.

What is the Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour?

There are two different kayaking tours that you can book with Pictured Rocks Kayaking.

The first is the Miner’s Castle tour which is designed for people who don’t have the time or interest in doing the longer kayaking tours.

If you’re in a time crunch this can be a good option but I would highly recommend the Ultimate Tour Paddle Route as you will be able to see all of the major highlights.

Our Pictured Rocks Kayaking Tour Experience

We booked a 9 AM Pictured Rocks kayaking tour and so to make sure we were getting there early, we left Ishpeming at 7AM. Remember, this tour will leave on time so you do not want to be late!

When it comes to physical activity we tend to knock these things out as early as possible but supposedly the best lighting is in the late afternoon or evening so you might want to consider doing one of the later tours if possible.

When we arrived there were several staff members pointing us on where to park making it really easy to get situated. I was also impressed that they had so many bathrooms at their facility both on the outside and the inside.

We went right to the check-in desk where we reviewed and signed the waiver and then checked in for the tour. After you check in, you’ll just hang out outside under the tent and wait for the safety briefing and orientation.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking office

You’ll be issued a life jacket and a spray skirt that will help you stay dry in the kayak. The instructors will show you how to properly fit both of these things on and it’s very easy if you’ve never done it before.

You’ll also get a briefing on some tips for paddling as well as a safety briefing.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

Here are a few things you need to remember.

The person in the back is the one who does the steering and it’s where the “control freak” needs to go. If you are the photographer of the duo you’ll want to be in the front.

The tandem kayak is quite stable. But make sure you don’t both look over the side of the kayak at the same time to admire the beautiful clear water because the kayak will start to tip. Also, always let the other person know when you are adjusting your seat position so that they are prepared for a bit of rocking.

And finally, always remember that that your paddles need to face the right direction (with the logo facing you).

I don’t think you need to go into a deep dive in paddling before doing the tour but if you wanted to get a good overview, I found the video below pretty helpful:

After the orientation, it will be time to load the boat and chances are it’s going to be a pretty packed house inside.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

In terms of what to wear and what to bring, here are some valuable tips.

I saw people wearing everything from pants and sweatshirts to tank tops and board shorts.

Personally, I wore hiking pants and a long sleeve shirt for sun protection but if I could do it again I probably would wear athletic shorts or swimming shorts. For footwear, you could wear sandals or water shoes but tennis shoes also can be just fine (there are no pedals to worry about). Don’t forget sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Bugs weren’t an issue.

One last suggestion is if you are prone to blisters, consider workout gloves that can help keep the hotspots away on the hands.

They do suggest you bring an extra pair of clothes just in case you get wet. I ended up getting my pants pretty damp despite the skirt on the kayak so I’d just bring keep some dry clothes with you in a backpack or in your vehicle.

We also brought water, beef jerky sticks, and chips to help us get by since the entire excursion is approximately five hours.

As far as what you will bring on the actual kayak that just varies. I saw some people bring nothing while others were bringing small backpacks, hydration bladders, little packs of snacks, etc.

I just brought one large water bottle with me on the kayak and placed it between my legs underneath the spray skirt. That did mean I had to undo it to get the water but it’s not that difficult to takeoff and on. You might be able to slip a hydration bladder through the spray skirt at your chest.

The ride out to the kayaking spot is going to take about 40 minutes. There was a little bit of wind but our boat had stabilizers so it never got bad at all. I always take Dramamine just in case but I probably would have been fine without it.

Sometime during the journey you’ll be assigned a group which is essentially a boarding group. In our case, there were six groups and we were assigned to group 5. We did not end up hitting the water until about 10 minutes after 10 AM.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

The “boarding process” is really great because they make it very easy to get in to your kayak, which is usually one of the major challenges of kayaking.

They will pull one of the kayaks from above and you’ll have bars to help you stabilize yourself as you sit into the kayak and then secure your spray skirt. This is yet another reason why I think it’s great for beginners.

Once we were seated, they gave us a little push and we were off to the races. We made our way towards the cliff face where our entire group would meet up along with our instructor who was in a red kayak for easy spotting.

You’ll want to hang around the group as it is required but they do give you some leeway so that you don’t always have to be bunched up together. It’s a win-win situation because, let’s face it, 1) kayak collisions are no one’s idea of fun, and 2) having your own slice of aquatic real estate is just plain delightful.

Speaking of crashing into things…. If you find yourself getting close to the rocks, use your hands to push off from them rather than your paddle and try to avoid colliding the kayak with them.

Also a few people did bump into each other. Often times you can just stick your paddle in the water to quickly brake the kayak. But if that’s not possible then just give the people a heads up that you are about to play a little bit of bumper boats and chances are the collision will not be that bad.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

Once the gang’s all there, your instructor will provide a brief overview, and then it’s time to embark on a captivating exploration of 5 miles along this breathtaking coastline.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

This was our inaugural kayaking experience, so everything felt entirely novel, yet surprisingly, it was relatively easy to get the hang of. Dealing with some wake proved a bit more challenging, but in the calmer stretches, we effortlessly glided through the serene waters.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

What’s nice about the tandem kayak is that you can take turns paddling if one person gets tired and you can also utilize one person to get more of the video or photographs you’d like to get.

As for what to do with your camera phone, some people purchased lanyards to hold their phone since if your phone does fall into the water, you are not permitted to recover it.

Remember, your arms will be getting tired and extending your arms out to get awesome video and photos while bobbing in the water can be a lot more taxing than you think.

What we did is simply place our phones between our life jacket and our chest. If your life jacket is snug it should be able to safely fit there without falling through.

Speaking of which, your guides can also take some epic photos of you so make sure you take advantage of that.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

If you’re doing the 5 mile tour, you have around 13 different sites to explore. These range from gnarly looking rock formations and monumental arches to tight cave openings and underwater boulder fields. It’s an impressive and diverse line-up of sites.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

You’ll be so close to the cliff faces that you’ll be able to give them a high-five at times and have the mineral rich droplets that form the colors on the wall fall down on you.

The water is incredibly gorgeous and very clear. At times, you can see the fine details of the dunes below or boulders and rocks like you’ve got some kind of aquatic X-ray vision. I dunked my phone under the water a few times to get some underwater shots but obviously only do that if you are confident with your grip.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking clear water

It’s also pretty cold so you don’t want to fall into this water but it can help you cool down. I for one love dipping my cap into the water and cooling off my head or just submerging my hands in the water and cooling off that way.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

Ultimately, the trip culminates at Chapel Rock, an iconic Pictured Rocks landmark immortalized on the Michigan quarter, where a lone white pine tree grows atop a stone pedestal, defying the odds of nature.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore kayaking

At that point, you will have kayaked 5 miles switch for a beginner feels really good. Overall it’s a pretty good workout for your upper body but not so exhausting that you can’t enjoy the experience.

I think a kayaking adventure is one of the best ways to explore Pictured Rocks. The ability to get up close to these magnificent clear faces is truly special and the staff runs such a great job that it makes everything easier on you. The only thing I would’ve changed his maybe booking a tour in the evening for the different lighting but the morning trip also has its own charm as the sun begins to peak above the cliffs.

Kayak the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Shingleton, Michigan

Description

Added by James Brady

The best way to see the 200-foot sandstone cliffs that make the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore famous is to do it up close and personal by kayak!

The best place to start a kayak tour of the main section of cliffs along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Miners Beach, located just outside of Munising. Miners Beach features a good size parking lot, along with a beautiful sandy beach that serves as a great launching point within sight of the 200-foot cliffs.

As you paddle, you can take in the remarkably clear waters of Lake Superior and the woods that hug the shore of Miners Beach. As you begin to reach the first stretch of cliffs, you will paddle by Bridal Veil Falls, which is typically visible early in the season or after a strong rain. East of that, you will soon be overtaken by 200-foot sandstone cliffs, some of which hang over you as you paddle beneath them.

There are not many places to stop along the initial stretch of cliffs, but if you manage to paddle approximately 3 miles east of Miner Beach, you will come across the perfect place to stop for lunch at Mosquito Beach. Despite the name, Mosquito Beach is a beautiful place to stop, relax, and take in the sights. The rock shelf that you enjoy your lunch on plunges beneath the water not far from the shore and provides for great snorkeling opportunities. Just down the beach, visitors can explore the caves of the Bloody Chiefs and even jump into the lake off of some of the rock ledges near the caves.

If you are lucky enough to have good paddling conditions, or are just in extra good paddling shape, you can continue paddling further east along the shoreline and explore several more miles of sandstone cliffs and highlights including the shipwreck of the Superior and the natural rock arch known as Lovers Leap. Be sure to know your limits though because the paddle back to Miners Beach can take several hours, especially if the wind is out of the west.

There are numerous tours in the area however, if you’re like us and have your own kayaks— launch from Miners beach. We paddled just past lovers leap before turning around and heading back. If going out without a guide, be sure to be prepared and check the forecast for strong winds.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Review: The Best Way to See Pictured Rocks?

Dec 03, 2023 | RT

This post may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking was the location in Munising for kayaking.

As I was headed to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore last fall, I kept hearing that the best way to see Pictured Rocks is from the water. As someone who loves hiking and viewing the scenery from land I wasn’t sure about it. I’m not usually a watersport person.

And yet I had two and a half days to spend in Munising and I felt like I should use at least part of a day to experience the iconic cliff views from the lake view.

Considering all this, going in I was a little nervous. First off, this was my first solo trip, I was worried I’d be cold, and as a cautious person I was just wondering if it would be worth it or if it was just a tourist rip-off.

Well, I’d say I experienced quite a lot on this tour, and by the end of this Pictured Rocks Kayaking review you’ll get quite the taste for what it’s like kayaking in Pictured Rocks. So suit up and grab your paddle, here’s my honest review.

My Experience Kayaking Pictured Rocks in Munising

My experience with Pictured Rocks Kayaking began even before I set foot in Munising. I had reserved the Ultimate Kayaking Tour from Pictured Rocks Kayaking about a month before my trip. Tickets can sell out, so in order to get my pick of times I made sure to reserve early.

Tandem sea kayaks were all lined up for our tour of Pictured Rocks.

However, the day before I was supposed to leave for my road trip to the U.P. I was rear ended on the highway and my car was totaled. Rather than move on with my trip, sore and shaken up, I made the decision to reschedule for the following weekend. That meant I had to rework my entire trip.

I called Pictured Rocks Kayaking as soon as they opened the following morning and left a message. When I was able to connect with the employees, they were very understanding, took my information, and were easily able to reschedule me at no cost. I was really appreciative of them switching this out at the last minute for me.

This was an early indication that I chose a good tour company.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking

I had chosen Pictured Rocks Kayaking in part because of what I’d seen online – a very professional website and good reviews – but also because there were only a few options as far as tour companies.

The National Park Service authorizes a limited number of tour companies to lead guided tours at Pictured Rocks. I liked that this particular tour was medium length. At 4-5 hours I would get to experience a lot, but still be able to fit a few other things in my day (I chose waterfall chasing ). This was also the only tour that offered a boat launch, which meant I would get a boat ride in addition to my kayaking.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking offers a boat cruise as part of their kayak tour which is one of the reasons I loved this tour.

I had briefly compared the many boat tours available in Munising, and decided I would prefer kayaking to sitting on the boat. It was a more active way to experience the cliffs. I would also be able to get much closer to the rocks than on a cruise boat.

Best Time to Kayak Pictured Rocks

Floating along Lake Superior in a kayak.

My one concern was I was visiting at the very end of kayaking season in Pictured Rocks. Tours were running through the last weekend in September and my visit was on the Saturday of that weekend, October 1st. Tours were still running, but the weather was sure to be colder and the seas rougher.

Average temperatures drop significantly after the transition from summer to fall, and since I was kayaking first thing in the morning, the day had not yet warmed up. Obviously the tour company is still offering the tours, so it’s not too cold to get out there. Summer might be preferred from that point.

But I’m here to tell you kayaking Pictured Rocks at the end of the season is still doable. I made sure to be prepared with lots of layers. I dressed in multiple moisture wicking layers (remember: cotton is not a good choice for wet activities) and wore my thin hiking gloves . The gloves certainly weren’t necessary, but my fingers tend to get cold. Just watch out, don’t dip your gloves in the water when paddling like I did 🙂

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in October.

Overall, despite it being October 1st, I stayed warm enough on the kayaking trip. We did experience some of the rougher seas that come with the higher winds of fall. Someone in another kayak pod tipped (which they said is rare especially if you follow instructions). And we eventually did have to cut our time on the water a little short. We were in the kayaks for an hour and a half instead of the expected two.

The crew was prepared though and knew exactly how to manage the weather.

What to Expect Kayaking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Going into this kayaking tour, I had not been kayaking much at all before. Just a float down a stream in a single kayak. But the tour was great for both experienced and beginner kayakers. I was paired up with another solo traveler who had taken several kayak tours including some in Everglades National Park.

Kayaking Pictured Rocks will get you up close to these beautiful rock formations.

Since she was experienced with steering a kayak she took the back. The kayaks were long, tandem sea kayaks, made to handle well in the waters of Lake Superior. But even if I was paired with another traveler as inexperienced as myself, I think we would have been fine. The tour guide gave us the instructions we needed and was patient with the group as we figured things out.

One thing I didn’t expect was the kayak “skirts” which were provided to keep the water from getting down into the kayak. These strapped around our waists and wrapped on the kayak opening as a waterproof barrier.

The sea skirt on the kayak.

Everything was provided for once I arrived at the office. It was key to arrive at least 40 minutes in advance of the tour to get checked in and hear the safety instructions. And I would recommend padding in some extra time as there can be some traffic and construction to navigate.

Restrooms are available on the boat, and were clean and functional. Pictured Rocks Kayaking makes the bathrooms available the entire tour, even if you need to paddle back to the boat for a quick stop.

Kayaking Pictured Rocks Review: The Good

Always make sure to wear a life vest when kayaking.

From the first moments with Pictured Rocks Kayaking I could tell this was an experienced crew who knew how to keep the kayakers safe. There was a simple safety demonstration including how to use the kayak and paddles. And staff was available to answer any questions.

I liked that we were in tandem kayaks which I didn’t know to expect beforehand, and it felt comforting to know someone else was teaming up on the trip with me. Also tandem kayaks are more stable, making them less likely to capsize. Overall I felt good heading out on the water.

It was about an hour boat ride from the dock in Munising to the cliffs of Pictured Rocks. During that time I got to admire the views from a little further out. It was just like taking a relaxing scenic ride around the lake.

Views from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The back of the boat included a viewing deck so we could enjoy the breeze and watch the scenery pass by. This also provided me an opportunity to meet by kayaking partner. On the way back, I used this time to enjoy my packed lunch which we were welcomed to bring.

Researched Traveler Tip: Do be prepared if you know you have seasickness as one person on the trip did not take well to the boat.

Really the best thing about this kayaking tour was the actual kayaking portion. Getting to launch off the boat and paddle around these beautiful rocky shores was incredible. We started out at the iconic Chapel Rock and got to view the pine tree with its dangling roots. I also viewed this from the shore on my hike of the Chapel Loop , however this is one landmark where it really is better from the water.

Chapel Rock from Lake Superior

We also got to paddle into a cove where the waters were quiet and we could calmly float around the ledges. Several times during the trip the guide brought us up close to the rocks where we could touch them and see the many different colors and ways the water had carved it over time.

It was more than just a kayaking trip in the vicinity of the cliffs – we really got to experience them. On one portion we got to go under an arch as we paddled our way through a small opening. Another time we were brought up close to a section where the rocks became a cave ceiling and water dripped down on us.

Kayaking at Pictured Rocks in Munising Michigan.

We were content to follow our guide to the next spot and enjoy all the colorful rocks along the way. The tour really felt full and had so many great places to kayak.

Kayaking Pictured Rocks Review: The Bad

I wouldn’t say there was truly anything bad about Pictured Rocks Kayaking. The tour was incredible. But as any true review, I’ve got to touch on the pros and the cons.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, especially about kayaking. I think it was a summer job he did while in school. Can you imagine spending your summers taking in these beautiful views every day?

He did a great job of guiding us to the great spots, pointing out the spectacular areas, and keeping an eye on the group. At the colorful dripping rocks he spun us a story about the water dripping from the ceiling being skittles flavored 🙂

However, for several parts of the tour I couldn’t hear the tidbits of information he was providing. The water noise, being at the back of the group, and the leader facing away as he led us made it difficult. I don’t know if this is very logistically possible, but it felt like a microphone would have helped.

Tour company for kayaking in Pictured Rocks.

So hearing more from the guide was something I thought was slightly lacking. But I’m sure if we’d asked, on the hour boat ride back they could have given us more history and stories. Definitely not a reason to abandon this tour.

Unpredictable Weather

Certainly not something the kayaking tour could have controlled. Especially being late in the season, rougher waters happen sometime. They managed it well though, keeping us next to a cove and away from waves, and trying to prolong the tour until it was really necessary to call it. In total we only missed about 30 minutes on the water.

The tour can continue even in light rain and light winds. The nice thing about this being a boat plus kayak tour is there’s usually still a chance to see the cliffs, just from the cruise boat. You can read the refund policy which is very generous.

Is Kayaking Pictured Rocks Worth It?

So, is kayaking pictured rocks worth it? For me, it certainly was. It offered a great complement to hiking along the lakeshore. Experiencing Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore from the water was the only way to see some of the beautiful colors up close. And being in a small group made the magnitude of the cliffs really come into perspective.

The cliffs along Lake Superior are beautiful to kayak beneath.

The following day I hiked the same portion of shoreline, except from above ( read here about the Chapel Loop Hike ) and it was very neat to see some of the same landmarks from above. I even got to see the same kayaking tour company giving one of their final tours of the year.

What to Bring on the Kayak Tour

There are a few things to bring on a kayak tour of Pictured Rocks that will make your tour more comfortable. Obviously as I mentioned above, be prepared for the season you’re kayaking in with multiple layers . Even on summer days the breeze off the water can be very cool. It will help you immensely if these layers are water wicking as well so that if you do get wet you don’t have to spend a long time drying out your cotton clothing.

If the tour is longer, make sure to pack some snacks , and of course water (regardless of the length). This is another benefit of the Pictured Rocks Kayaking with the boat cruise since you can eat your packed snacks on the boat.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Munising Michigan

Keep yourself protected with sunscreen and if you’re there in the summer before the bugs have died consider bringing insect repellant .

And of course you’ll want to take a ton of photos on the tour, but don’t want to get your phone wet. The kayaking company sells waterproof phone cases at the office, but if you want a much better deal (you’ll pay nearly 3x this amount at the office) check out these waterproof phone cases you can buy in advance. This really is a must have.

Enjoy the Best Kayak Tour in Munising!

That’s it for my review of Pictured Rocks Kayaking, and as you can see, it was amazing. I would recommend the Ultimate Kayaking Tour for anyone visiting Munising. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

The 7 Best Kayaking Destinations In Pictured Rocks

Kayaking is a great way to spend a day in Pictured Rocks. The scenery is stunning and the water is clear, providing an excellent chance for swimming and fishing. There are many different kayaking trails that can be explored, so there’s no need to feel confined by a single route. Here are the top kayaking destinations in Pictured Rocks;

Miner’s Falls

If you are looking for a beautiful kayaking destination, look no further than Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, this park spans 42 miles between the towns of Grand Marais and Munising. This natural wonder is an excellent destination for kayaking and boat cruising but is also a great place to hike, bike, and camp.

From the National Lakeshore, you can choose from a number of guided kayaking programs and hikes. A few outfitters offer camping on their sites, including Paddlers Village. A variety of kayaking options are available for groups of all abilities. The park is also home to a natural rock arch called Lovers Leap, which is perfect for a romantic getaway.

The Hike to Miner’s Falls starts with a brief hike through the woods hugging the Miners Beach shoreline. The waterfall is visible in the early spring or after a good rain, but it soon becomes overshadowed by a pair of 200-foot-high sandstone cliffs. Once you’re on the water, you’ll be able to see the cliffs and the waterfall from a new perspective.

In the summer, you can kayak to Miner’s Falls and the surrounding area. This kayaking destination is located on the west side of Miner’s Beach and is one of the many waterfalls in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. In the winter, the falls are covered with ice, so be sure to check the weather before you go. Once the weather clears, the guided kayaking trips are scheduled. Have a look at our take on winter kayaking guidelines .

If you are an active person, Miner’s Falls is an ideal place to try your hand at kayaking. The 50-foot-high Miner’s Falls is worth the hike. It takes about a mile on a dirt trail with some elevation changes. It’s the tallest waterfall in Pictured Rocks and boasts two viewing platforms – one at the base of the waterfall and another at the end.

This waterfall can be popular, so plan accordingly. If you’re not a kayaking enthusiast, you can still try Elliot Falls, a smaller waterfall that can sometimes be dry during times of less rain.

Munising Falls is also an easily accessible destination, but keep in mind that it’s one of the most popular hiking trails in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and as such, it’s likely to be crowded on the peak summer weekends.

Paddler’s Village

There are several reasons why Paddler’s Village is one of the Pictures’ top kayaking destinations. If you’re an avid kayaker, you can enjoy the scenic river and its surrounding cliffs while enjoying the stunning scenery. You can also camp out and take advantage of kayak fishing spots. There are plenty of options for the entire family to enjoy while kayaking in this beautiful area.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to avoid the long, windy journey. Pictured Rocks is known for its sheer walls that plunge almost to the water’s edge. If high winds and strong currents make it difficult to stay afloat, you’ll want to avoid this area. Drowning is the number one cause of death in national parks, and there are no facilities for bicyclists.

If you’re an experienced kayaker, you’ll want to check out the area’s 100 miles of hiking and biking trails. The sandstone cliffs at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are stunning. Natural erosion has created the sandstone cliffs, which tower 50 to 200 feet above Lake Superior. Paddle trips can last from two hours to an entire day. Popular launch points include Miners Beach and Sand Point. Those who want to learn more about the area should book a guided kayak tour.

The area is surrounded by a variety of waterfalls, and you can kayak under many of them. Whether you’re looking for a long-distance tour or an amazing overnight kayaking trip , you’ll be sure to enjoy a scenic experience. The area is known for its challenging terrain , so you’ll need the proper equipment and knowledge to navigate it safely.

Spray Falls

There is one breathtaking waterfall in the pictured rocks of Lake Superior that you shouldn’t miss too! This waterfall plunges 70 feet from a cliff into Lake Superior. Although the waterfall is difficult to view, it is possible to hike to its top and kayak down the river. The park offers guided sea kayak tours and cruises that will allow you to get up close to the waterfall. In the summer, the falls are open to the public.

There are several waterfalls within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Miners River Falls is a popular waterfall located about 1.2 miles from Spray Falls. The Miners River cascades 50 feet over a cliff and continues on its way. Another must-see destination is the Miners River Arch. If you are taking a kayak tour in the park, you’ll want to check out these waterfalls and the Miners River Arch.

After hiking to Spray Falls, you can relax on the water with a boat cruise around the island. The small, one-level boats offer a scenic view of Grand Island, and you can even have lunch on board!

Kayaking around Pictured Rocks offers this experience at the end of the day. Just be sure to bring water and snacks. Remember, the trail is challenging and requires proper kayaking wear . In addition to water, you’ll need snacks while hiking and kayaking to Spray Falls.

And while you’re there, you might also want to spend a little time at Miner’s Beach, where you can relax in the sun and swim. After the hike, you’ll be glad you did!

Lake McDonald

For some of the most spectacular kayaking in the national park, Lake McDonald is the place to be. Its sheer walls stretch 15 miles from the shoreline to the rocks, making it difficult to exit the water even in high winds. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of death in national parks. However, with the right gear and a reputable guide, you can safely enjoy a peaceful kayaking trip through this beautiful area.

You can enjoy scenic views of the Pictured Rocks while kayaking on this pristine lake. You can reach the scenic shoreline at Miners, Sand Point, and Twelvemile Beach. The pristine water is perfect for paddling, and you can stop at a waterfall to view a spectacular view. The Roam Inn offers five-star farm-to-table dining with eclectic American fare.

The Pictured Rocks Cruise, ranked as Michigan’s number one boat tour by AAA offers breathtaking views of the Pictured Rocks. Its tour includes underwater exploration.

If you want to try paddling on the lake, you can also hike up the surrounding mountains and explore Glacier National Park’s famous ice fields. You will also find ancient glaciers and the infamous Going to the Sun Road. Camping at the Avalanche Creek Campground is another way to experience the many attractions of the park. If you are looking for a cozy place to stay, many Glacier Hotels are available.

Little Chapel Lake

Kayaking at Little Chapel Lake is a great way to explore the beautiful Pictured Rocks. It’s a fast and fun way to enjoy the water and the scenery. Some of the features of kayaking at Little Chapel Lake include: – The water is cold and clear , making it an ideal place for swimming. Moreover, there are several places to lunch and drink, making it easy to find a spot to paddle.

The lake provides plenty of opportunities for fishing. Kayakers can easily find help if they need it, making it an easy experience Overall, kayaking at Little Chapel Lake is a great experience that is perfect for those who love nature.

The lake is located just east of the village of Pictured Rocks and provides a variety of kayaking and canoeing options. With its crystal clear waters and nice beaches, Little Chapel Lake is perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful day out.

Mosquito River

The Mosquito River and Beach are both great places to kayak. But if you don’t have time to go kayaking, you can still enjoy the beach! Kayaking at Mosquito River And Beach in Pictured Rocks offers customers a great way to get around the area. The kayakers can use the river as their means of transportation and enjoy the beach on their own time.

Mosquito River is a beautiful stream located in Pictured Rocks Michigan. It is a great place to fish for crappie, catfish, and bass. The stream is also home to some nice slow-moving current that makes for great fishing. Paddlers can also choose to use the beach as their launching point, which makes it less difficult to get back into the water when they’re finished.

Grand Portal Point

Kayaking at Grand Portal Point is a great way to enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Pictured Rocks National Park. The kayakers can find plenty of spotty and rocky reefs for swimming, fishing, and boating. paddlers can also explore the rapids that make the point of their playground. There are also several launch points for small crafts, making it a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

The Grand Portal Point is located just south of the entrance to the park.

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a popular place to kayak, but you should not go kayaking during high water times. The water at these lakeshores is very deep and there are often powerful currents that can make it dangerous to try to kayak during high water.

Pictured Rocks is amazing for kayaking and canoeing because of the variety of water depths and currents it offers. It’s also great for fishing because of the many wading and fly fishing spots available. Besides, it has multiple points of access and is large enough to allow for many different types of paddling.

Yes, you can go fishing on the Pictured Rocks in Michigan. You can fish for trout, bass, and other fish. First, be sure to check the local regulations before casting your line. Second, use a light net or fly boat to prevent yourself from taking too many fish. Third, be careful of poisonous plants and debris on the rocks. Lastly, always take water samples to document your catch.

The best time to kayak Pictured Rocks is during the early fall when the water is warmer and the retrieves are more consistent. kayaking in the area during these seasons allows you to see the most diverse and beautiful scenery.

In short, it costs about $10 to rent a kayak at Pictured Rocks. However, the amount may vary for different kayaks and other watercraft.

When you go kayaking at Pictured Rocks, you should wear a waterproof jacket and hat to help protect your head from the rain. You should also bring a life jacket if you want to swim.

In conclusion, Pictured Rocks offers an extensive array of kayaking destinations perfect for those looking to escape the city. With amazing lakeside habitats and an abundance of popular kayaking trails, there is something for everyone to explore in this stunning national park.

Absolutely AMAZING. Captain John did a great job getting everyone safely too and from the kayaking area. The guides were incrrdubor as well. Jesse deserves a RAISE! Awesome dude who did an outstanding job with everyone. Got some incredible pictures and had some fun discussions along our 5 mile journey. Wear shoes/water shoes and if you're new asknfornyge rudder! Also wear long sleeves and/or a hoodie (even during the summer) it gets chilly on the lake.

This is a great review Zach and we appreciate you taking the time to post one!

Beautiful tour, we paddled 5 miles along the shore. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and very fun. My 87 year old grandma got in a kayak and joined, the entire crew was so helpful to make sure she could get in and out of the kayak. Definitely would do this tour again!!

We did it! Total beginner kayaker here and we paddled the whole 5 miles along pictures rocks - it was amazing! I feel like we got really lucky with the weather as it can change quickly, but it couldn't have been more perfect. The staff were all super knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants an experience of a lifetime.

This is a strange review in that we didn't actually take this tour. We had made reservations for the boat/kayaking tour, and paid for the trip online ($352.80 for two adults). Unfortunately, our plans changed and we had to cancel our trip within the company's cancellation window. We contacted the company, and the amount that had been charged to our credit card was refunded -- in full and without any hassle. Kudos to Pictured Rocks Kayaking for its professionalism. We would definitely take this tour with this company if back in northern Michigan.

Thank you very much for acknowledging our refund policy! We understand the life and plans can change quickly and we will do everything we can to work with you! We hope to see you sometime in the future!

High winds and rough water meant our tour was switched at the last minute to the alternate Grand Island tour at a discounted rate. The tour was excellent even with the switch. We got up close to beautiful rock formations and our guide, Courtney, was great. And Captain Harry kept us all safe and sound. A great organization -- hope we can come back someday for the Pictured Rocks version!

Disclaimer: I didn't actually get to complete the kayak because of weather. I also tried to do this on 7/2/23 (like another 1 star reviewer) but there was an unexpected temperature inversion in the water that left much of the shoreline socked in fog. Of course everywhere else on land was clear and sunny... They officially canceled for safety reasons (they need to be able to see where everyone is). I know that Uncle Ducky did not cancel as a friend who, unbeknownst to me, was also there did their all day tour - but confirmed that a lot of it was only visible close up anyway. So, safety yes but as a side benefit they didn't waste our time taking us out to get a very stunted view either. Full refund quickly processed. Lake Superior weather is unpredictable. Hopefully I can return to actually do the kayak someday!

This was such an amazing tour! Getting up close and personal with this beautiful shore line was breathtaking. The tour we took was 5 hours, we took about an hour boat ride, then loaded into our kayaks and split up into smaller groups of about 5 to 6 kayaks. The kayak trip last about 2 hours, with our guide who gave us lots of information about the different rock formations and it's history. The entire crew was very accommodating and personable.

Thank you Andrea! We are glad you enjoyed your tour in early June!

Our group experienced rough waters and missed the PR tour but got to paddle Grand Island along with receiving some money back. Even though we missed Pictured Rocks, Grand Island was just as beautiful. We had "Adventure Vinnie" as our tour guide and he took our group through the tighter rock areas, waterfalls and caves that really test your paddle skills and made the day even more fun. Launching from the boat means you have an added layer of safety and you get to see more without having to turn around and go back. I highly recommend the Ultimate tour (or Unexpected Tour)! Thanks for a great day! ** It's always important to remember that Munising Bay can look calm and Lake Superior can be completely different at the cliffs. The weather can turn at any moment like it did for us.**

Had the time of our lives on this tour. Adventure Vinnie is truly one of a kind. He answered our questions, took our photos when we asked, and made sure we felt safe as first time kayakers. Would recommend this to anyone looking to get an up close and personal look at the beauty Lake Superior has to offer.

We agree! Adventure Vinnie is unique and one of our most dedicated guides who truly loves this job. We are extremely lucky to have him on our team! Thanks for leaving a review!

The crew worked their butts off to provide a great experience despite some almost rough swells. Clean boat, help getting in and out of the kayaks on the water. Guides tried to get pictures which they airdropped to you for free. Wonderful views of Pictured Rocks

4 Ways To Enjoy Michigan's Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Guest post by Campfires and Conceigres

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore extends along the southern shore of Lake Superior in Northern Michigan , from Munising to Grand Marais. There are several ways to experience Pictured Rocks , including backpacking, camping, and boating.

4 Ways To Enjoy Michigan’s Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

1. Pictured Rocks Cruises

Seeing Pictured Rocks from the water is a unique experience and much easier than hiking into some remote sites along the shore.

As part of the National Park Service, dogs aren’t allowed on the hiking trails. I was thrilled when I found out that Pictured Rocks Cruises offers on-site kennels for customers!

My ticket was $38, which I thought was a good price, given that parking and dog kennel were free! The cruise lasted 2 1/2 hours and is a great way to see the park from the water.

Taking a kayak tour from Munising is also an option, but paddling on Lake Superior is not recommended unless you have prior paddling experience.

2. Pictured Rocks Backpacking

Pictured Rocks is a great place for a beginner backpacker or first-time solo trip. It’s nearly impossible to get lost, as you follow the lakeshore almost the whole way and if you veer too far south, you’ll hit the park road.

There are established campsites along the way, all of them have bear boxes and poles, many have a vault toilet and potable water, and there are several “bailout options” as you pass through several day-use areas along the way.

Backcountry campsites at Pictured Rocks are spaced about 4-7 miles apart, along the 42-mile Lakeshore Trail (which also is part of the  North Country Trail .)

Read more fun reasons why you need to visit Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

3. Pictured Rocks Camping

Pictured Rocks has three drive-in campsites: Twelvemile Beach, Little Beaver Lake, and Hurricane River. All camping is on a first come, first served basis, so getting a spot can be tricky and early arrival is recommended.

The campgrounds are rustic – no electric, water or sewer hookups. Watching the sunset over the lake and falling asleep to crashing waves just below your campsite is completely worth the effort, though!

Additional campgrounds and hotels can be found in Munising if you don’t feel like roughing it!

4. Pictured Rocks Hiking

There are several scenic spots that can be reached with a short stroll or a day hike. Munising Falls is just behind the visitor’s center in town.

The park service has a great list of waterfalls on its website .

Between beaches, waterfalls, and wooded paths, there is plenty of options for hiking at Pictured Rocks .

Thanks, Leigh, for sharing all the fun ways we can enjoy Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Be sure to follow Leigh on social!!
