Boat Tours of Lake Como FAQ

What are the best places to visit during a boat tour in lake como.

During a boat tour of Lake Como, you’ll get to explore some of the most famous towns and villages such as Bellagio , which is often called the “Pearl of Lake Como,” as well as Varenna, Tremezzo, and Menaggio . Each of these places has its own distinctive charm and personality.

Now if you’re interested in exploring lesser-known areas, I recommend you to take a Private Boat Tour in Lake Como that will allow you to build your own itinerary. You can consider visiting one of the uninhabited places around Lake Como, such as Isola Comacina or taking a stroll down the Adda River which branches off south from Lecco . In these places, there are fewer tourists, giving you a chance to experience the laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty that northern Italy is famous for.

What are the departure towns?

The starting point for your tour or rental will depend on its type. For instance, public transport boats such as the vaporetti and ferries typically have several pick-up points located around the lake’s perimeter (with Bellagio being one of the most popular), while private boat rentals usually depart from either Tremezzo or Menaggio.

Most boating companies will provide full details of where your tour departs from when you book, so be sure to check this before setting off!

How long does a boat trip in Lake Como last?

The duration of your Lake Como boat tour varies based on your chosen tour or rental.

Public transport boats , such as vaporetti, operate at short intervals and have designated stops for village exploration. They follow a set route and usually run every 30 minutes to an hour. These tours are ideal if you want to disembark and explore one of the villages for a few hours before resuming your journey around the lake.

Private boat rentals offer flexibility, typically with half-day (four hours) and full-day (eight hours) options. Dinner tours allow three hours between departure and docking, while traditional sightseeing tours last two to four hours, with longer options for shoreline exploration.

When is the best time to visit Lake Como?

Any time of the year is a good time to go on a Lake Como boat tour. This is the best way to see the most beautiful views and visit the stunning villas around Lake Como. But if you are planning to catch the warm weather, why not, swim in the blue water lake, between March and November is the best time as you will catch the peak of summertime at Lake Como. Just don’t forget to pack your sunblock and swimsuit.

If you are visiting Lake Como during spring and autumn, they are also beautiful seasons to go on a boat tour, and even if the temperatures are cooler, the crowds are also smaller.

Now if you are visiting during wintertime, you will be able to catch the snow-capped mountains in the background, you will just need to wear layers and especially a warm jacket and you will love this charming season at Lake Como!

What to wear in Lake Como?

If you are also visiting during the hot months, think about  light clothes  and  comfortable shoes   to walk and explore during the day. Don’t forget your  sunblock , and  sunglasses  and consider a  hat   too. If you are planning to go on a  boat tour at Lake Como , bring your bathing suit 😉

Best Things to Do in Lake Como You Can’t Miss

1. wander through the streets of bellagio.

Bellagio is one of my all-time favorite towns in Lake Como . With its picturesque streets, colorful buildings, and stunning views of the lake, it really looks like it came straight from a postcard.

There are many fantastic things to do in Bellagio , but strolling along the winding cobbled pathways just never gets old, and I could happily spend hours doing this every time I visit.

One of my favorite places is the waterfront promenade which is the perfect place to catch your breath and get some peace. It’s especially beautiful when the flowers are in full bloom!

The Old Town of Bellagio is the kind of place where you won’t be able to put your camera away. Traditional Mediterranean buildings in every shade of pink, orange, and yellow, flower-filled balconies, and cozy cafes line the streets, each more beautiful than the last.

This is also where you’ll find Salita Serbelloni, a stunning street that you’ll instantly recognize as it’s among the top things to see in Lake Como.

It features in every other picture you’ll see from this part of Italy, but there’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes.

View of Bellagio Lake Como from the water

2. Tour the famous Villa del Balbianello

Both Star Wars and James Bond have used Villa del Balbianello as a filming location, which is a testament to how incredible this centuries-old mansion is.

Located on the lakefront in the tiny village of Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is oh-so-elegant inside and is home to perfectly maintained gardens, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a popular wedding venue.

You can also visit the inside of the villa if you’re interested in history and architecture.

But even if you don’t go inside, a stroll around its gardens is one of the best things to do in Lake Como. You’ll find centuries-old trees, beautiful flowers, and stunning views of the lake from different vantage points.

And let’s not forget about that famous balcony overlooking the lake, where you can channel your inner Anakin Skywalker or James Bond. It was so unreal to see it in person and I definitely recommend adding this to your Lake Como itinerary .

3. Discover the town of Varenna

Towns like Varenna almost look too amazing to be real, so much so that I felt like I was living in a dream the entire time I was there. For a town so small, you can surprisingly still find lots of things to do in Varenna .

Villa Monastero is Varenna’s biggest claim to fame, but this small village brings so much more to the table.

My personal favorite is the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, a short little walkway right along the water’s edge that you have to check out.

Other spots to explore include the Villa Cipressi and the Church of St. George, and if you’re feeling like hitting the great outdoors, you can hike up to the thousand-year-old Castello di Vezio, but I have more on that a little later.

Even if you’re short on time, a quick visit to the Old Town and lunch on the waterfront is a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

My favorite place to get some drinks and appetizers is at Bar Il Molo, which has an amazing terrace overlooking the lake.

Colorful houses in Varenna, Lake Como

4. Explore Villa Carlotta

The only spot that I think can rival Villa del Balbianello is the regal Villa Carlotta , a huge three-story property with its very own botanical gardens in Tremezzo.

Much like Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta has been renovated into a museum filled with sculptures, paintings, and ornate furniture from the last few centuries.

But the real draw of Villa Carlotta is its expansive gardens. They’re much larger than other villas in Lake Como and have an incredible collection of flowers and plants from around the world.

Make sure to stop at the lakeside gates to witness one of the most jaw-dropping views of Lake Como. It’s no wonder the original owners chose this location for their summer house!

Getting tickets to Villa Carlotta is easy and can be done at the entrance or online. The ticket includes the gardens and the villa, so you can explore at your own pace.

5. Take a ferry ride across Lake Como

One of my favorite memories from my trips to Lake Como is taking a public ferry ride across the lake. It’s definitely the best way to see all the different towns and charming villas along the shore.

All of the main towns are connected by frequent ferries, so moving from place to place is quite straightforward and usually pretty quick.

Not to mention that it’s super affordable! Shorter routes like Bellagio to Varenna can cost as little as €5, and even if you’re traveling from Como to Bellagio which is almost 2 hours, it’ll only set you back around €10.

You can check the official Navigazione Laghi website for the schedules and fares, and I also recommend buying your tickets online, especially during the peak season.

6. Stroll around Menaggio

Menaggio is just as picturesque as the likes of Bellagio and Varenna but is noticeably quieter and has a lovely laidback way of life. It’s the perfect place to go if you want to relax and enjoy some peace.

The town features a lovely promenade with views of the lake and mountains, perfect for an afternoon walk. You can also find excellent restaurants serving up delicious Italian cuisine in Menaggio.

One of my favorite things to do in Menaggio is to sit at one of the cafes along the waterfront, especially around Piazza Guiseppe Garibaldi, and take in the stunning views while sipping on an Aperol Spritz. It’s pure bliss!

There’s not as much to do in Menaggio as in some of the neighboring towns, but that’s part of why it’s so peaceful and easygoing.

7. Tour Villa Monastero

Varenna’s most popular attraction, Villa Monastero is a must-visit when in Lake Como. This former monastery has been transformed into a museum and botanical garden, making it an ideal spot for history lovers and nature enthusiasts.

While the museum is absolutely worth visiting, it was the gardens that really took my breath away. Stretching for almost 2 km (1.25 miles), every corner of the gardens is immaculate, vibrant, and steeped in history.

Strolling through the gardens was undoubtedly one of my favorite things to do in Lake Como!

Even if you’re not usually one for museums, I highly recommend visiting Villa Monastero for its incredible gardens alone.

However, if you have the time, I suggest buying the combined ticket to visit both the villa and the gardens for a well-rounded experience.

8. Take a walk through Orrido di Bellano

One of the most unique and lesser-known spots in Lake Como is Orrido di Bellano, a natural gorge formed by the Pioverna River.

The walk through the gorge is truly breathtaking as you follow a wooden walkway through tunnels, over bridges, and past waterfalls. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see in Lake Como and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

What I found remarkable about Orrido di Bellano was how close it is to Bellano town, as it feels like it’s tucked away miles from the center. In reality, a 5-minute stroll from the heart of the town will get you right to the entrance.

Though Orrido di Bellano is quite well known, many visitors often overlook it, and I can’t understand why. It’s also just a 5-minute train ride from Varenna, so it’s very easy to get to.

9. Head out on a private boat tour

Although seeing Lake Como from a ferry or the shore is fantastic, nothing beats experiencing it on a private boat tour. It’s undoubtedly one of the best ways to take in all the beauty and charm of this stunning lake.

You can rent a boat yourself (most boats don’t require a license) or hire a driver to take you around.

Like most private tours, these tend to be significantly more expensive than classic guided trips, but if you’re traveling with a group, it can be quite affordable.

Aside from the obvious beauty, one of my favorite things about taking a private boat tour is that you have complete control over your itinerary. You can stop wherever and whenever you want for photos or to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.

There are lots of options, such as this private 2-hour tour  with your own captain, or you can don the captain’s hat yourself and  rent a boat for 2 hours  which gives you the ultimate freedom to explore on your own.

If you’re staying in Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, or Tremezzo, this luxurious Lake Como boat tour will be the best option for you.

Alternatively, you can also find a bunch of skippers offering private excursions from each of the main towns, so it’s possible to do this activity at the last minute if it’s not too busy.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo Lake Como

10. Explore the ruins of the Castello di Vezio

In terms of more outdoorsy things to do at Lake Como, it’s hard to beat the hike to the Castello di Vezio. The trail will take you around 30 minutes to complete, so it’s a relatively short but steep hike.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by spooky ghost statues scattered around the grounds, 12th-century ruins, and some of Lake Como’s best views. Anyone with an interest in wildlife will also enjoy checking out the collection of birds of prey that reside here.

This castle has lived many lives, including serving as a military outpost during World War II, and you can read up on the background through the information boards at the top.

As it’s a steep hike, I recommend wearing suitable shoes and bringing plenty of water. I stupidly did this hike in sandals and it was horrible to get down on the slippery paths so I wouldn’t recommend that!

11. Stroll through the botanical gardens at Villa Cipressi

Another stunning garden to explore on Lake Como is at Villa Cipressi in Varenna. This gorgeous villa has a beautiful terraced garden with incredible views of the lake.

Villa Cipressi now operates as a hotel and it’s definitely one of the most stunning Lake Como hotels with lake views !

The building itself dates back to the 15th century and retains all its old-world charm through its outdoor patio, luxury guestrooms, and traditional decor. Sadly, only hotel guests are permitted inside the property.

However, the botanical gardens are open to the public and are just as sensational, packed with hundreds of plant species in the prettiest of surroundings. It’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon, especially if you’re looking for a quieter spot away from the busy towns.

12. Try some watersports on the lake

Lake Como is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, but it also has plenty to offer for travelers who like to get their adrenaline pumping.

Wakeboarding, windsurfing, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding are just some of the watersports offered along the lake, and the calm waters make it much less daunting for first-timers.

When the warmer weather comes around, towns and villages like Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno operate a ton of exciting watersports, and many hotels have the likes of jet skis and kayaks available to rent.

This is a fantastic way to experience the lake from a different perspective and add some excitement to your trip.

13. Enjoy a funicular ride up to Brunate

The town of Como is linked to the nearby village of Brunate by a funicular railway that’s been in operation since the late 1800s.

Brunate lies 500 meters (1,640 ft) above Como, making it an excellent spot for panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The journey itself only takes around 7 minutes, and during peak seasons, it runs roughly every 15 minutes. After you land in Brunate, you’ll have the Phare de Volta lighthouse and quaint churches like Parrocchia Sant’Andrea Apostolo to explore.

We opted to visit for sunset and I couldn’t recommend it enough. The sky lit up in the prettiest shades of pink, orange, and yellow, with the lake sparkling below us. It was a truly magical experience!

14. Explore the historic center of Como

Como is the capital of the Province of Como, and I’ve always found this city to be terribly underrated.

It’s much larger than cute villages like Bellagio and Varenna, but it has so much to offer in terms of history, culture, and nightlife.

You’ll have no problem catching a ferry to Como for the day, as it boasts fantastic connections to most of the smaller towns, but spending a few nights here is also definitely worthwhile.

The exquisite Como Cathedral is the centerpiece of the city, so a visit here is a must to see frescoes and stained glass windows that’ll blow you away.

Other things to do in Como include visiting Villa Olmo, a palatial property that looks more like a royal residence, plus the Basilica of San Fedele.

Como also has a direct train connection to Milan, so it’s an easy day trip from the fashion capital of Italy if you’re based there.

15. Attend an Italian cooking class

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best things to do in Lake Como is to take part in a cooking class.

As well as being a wonderful opportunity to learn the craft of Italian cooking, these classes are such a blast and usually include some local wines to enjoy alongside your home-cooked meal.

This tour equips you with all the skills you’ll need to craft your own pasta at home, and you’ll also learn how to whip up a mean tiramisu. The class is usually only made up of around 10 to 12 people and runs from your local chef’s own home.

An Italian dining experience wouldn’t be complete without an aperitif, and these classes generally offer some prosecco to sip on before your meal, plus some light bites and nibbles.

16. Visit Villa Melzi Gardens

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Lake Como has an abundance of high-end villas and immaculate gardens, and Villa Melzi is one that I instantly fell in love with.

Just a quick stroll from the center of Bellagio, Villa Melzi is actually one of the newer villas in the area, having been constructed in the early 1800s.

The interior of the villa is off-limits to visitors, but the museum, chapel, and gardens are open to the public from March to November each year.

From the Romanesque and Egyptian statues to the serene Japanese pond and the meandering walkways, these gardens are just magical and really encapsulate the beauty of Lake Como.

Bellagio can be quite hectic during the summer months, and Villa Melzi will check all your boxes when you’re looking for somewhere that’s easy to reach but away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets.

17. Eat in a lakeside restaurant

You won’t have to go far to enjoy dinner with a view in the Lake Como area, as there are more waterfront eateries than I’d even attempt to count.

Classic Italian fare like wood-fired pizzas, arancini, burrata, and bruschetta are available in most restaurants, so you’ll be spoiled for choice no matter where you pick.

Having said that, it’s not uncommon for bistros and cafes with incredible locations to be lacking in quality when it comes to the food, so I have a few suggestions for you to ensure you won’t have to sacrifice on views or taste.

For an upscale experience, make sure to visit Bar Giardino at Hotel Royal Victoria in Varenna. The view from the outdoor terrace is simply incredible, and the food is equally as impressive.

Or for a more casual option, head to Bar Il Molo , just a few steps from Hotel Royal Victoria. I must admit, the food here can be a bit of a hit or miss, but the view from their terrace and the cocktails are top-notch.

Ristorante La Punta is another favorite of mine, and it’s located right on the tip of Bellagio’s peninsula, making it the perfect place for a sunset dinner. With its elegant decor and delicious seafood dishes, this restaurant is a must-visit while in Lake Como.

18. Take a dip in the lake

It goes without saying that one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Como is to dive into the refreshing cobalt-blue waters.

Lake Como is a lovely place for a dip, especially when you’ve spent the day under the sweltering sunshine. After all, Italy is no stranger to scorching summer temperatures!

There are many hotels perched right along the waterside with their own stretch of private land, but there are a number of designated swimming areas in most towns.

Unless somewhere is marked as safe for swimming or is a beach area, it’s best to avoid jumping in, as some patches of the lake have less favorable swimming conditions than others.

Some gorgeous spots for a quick splash include Lido di Bellagio Beach Club, Spiaggia Pubblica di Bellagio, or Lido di Varenna.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The most popular areas for accommodation in Lake Como are Bellagio, Varenna, and Como. These towns have the most tourist attractions and offer great accommodation options ranging from luxurious villas to budget-friendly guesthouses.

Varenna and Como are especially great because they have direct train connections to Milan, so it’s very easy to get to. However, keep in mind that Como is very far from the middle part of the lake where most attractions are located so you’ll spend a lot of time commuting.

If you want to know more about the best places to stay around the lake, check out my in-depth guide about where to stay in Lake Como . It covers all of the best areas and gives you some insider tips on where to find the best deals.

About Lake Como

Italy’s third largest lake, Lake Como has, over the centuries, been a super popular place for aristocrats and the well-to-do to have their holiday homes.

Beautiful villas have dotted the lakeside for over a thousand years, with wealthy Romans enjoying this slice of Northern Italy as a retreat from city life.

Roman historian Pliny the Younger had not one, but two resorts built here, the Tragedia and the Comedia.

Set in the Lombardy region, the primary attraction of Lake Como are the beautiful landscapes: the gorgeous natural landscapes continue to captivate visitors’ imaginations to this day.

View of Bellagio and the mountains behind it from the lake

View of Bellagio and the mountains behind it from the lake

Add beautiful architecture and charming towns into the mix, and it’s no wonder that this iconic body of water has remained such a staple over the years.

Many travellers add either a Lake Como day trip from Milan or a full three days in Lake Como to their Italy itineraries . Regardless of how long you spend in Lake Como, a boat tour along this beautiful lake is a must.

There are multiple pretty little towns to visit along the water’s edge, from the famous Bellagio to Varenna and the eponymous Como, all on the lake’s luxurious southern shore.

The interesting Y-shape of the lake really lends itself to boat tours. Rather than setting sail on a huge, shapeless body of water, exploring Lake Como on a cruise feels more like going on an adventure.

From the waters edge you can discover its ancient villas, little bays and inlets, and the hidden gems of Lake Como, which just add to the majestic feel of the place.

The 9 best Lake Como boat tours

Before we dive into the best Lake Como boat tours, I should clarify that there are lots of different options and different types of Lake Como boat tours.

Some come with a professional skipper, whilst others are just a rental company giving you a boat to then cruise yourself.

In this tours collection, I have also listed the public ferries, and you’ll soon see why.

Lake Como by ferry

While there are plenty of tours on offer, Lake Como boat tour prices can be expensive. Don’t worry though: one of the more affordable ways to explore the Y-shaped lake is to use the Lake Como ferries.

Cruising around Lake Como with the ferries

Cruising around Lake Como with the ferries

Varenna at sunset as seen from the lake

Varenna at sunset as seen from the lake

This public ferry service takes passengers to 45 different destinations around the lake, and stops at all major towns along the shoreline.

Run by Navigazione Laghi, there are three different types of boats – from regular to high-speed – and various routes to choose from.

Prices change depending on the type of ferry and route you take, but prices start at a very reasonable €2.50. You can purchase ferry tickets at the corresponding ticket office that is located near each dock.

It might not be as panoramic, romantic or private an experience as a traditional wooden boat tour, but it will give you a taste of what it’s like to cruise on this beautiful lake, taking in the gorgeous sights and main attractions, for a tenth of the price of a boat tour.

Como: Personal Lake Como Motor Boat Rental

Though this isn’t exactly a tour with a guide, this option gives you the opportunity to tour Lake Como by boat independently , and that’s pretty cool.

You and your group (up to six people) will meet at the dockside, where you’ll be taught the ins and outs of driving the boat (don’t worry, it’s not too tricky).

Then it’s time to head out onto the water as you cruise around yourself, enjoying the scenery and lapping it all up. The instructors at the start are really friendly and will help you get to grips with how the boat works.

It’s also a more affordable alternative to the guided boat tours on Lake Como, which can quickly become expensive.

All in all, it’s not just a great option for budget travellers, but also for those who are a little bit more independent and want to explore at their own pace.

From Milan: Lake Como at Sunset with Boat & Walking Tour

This boat trip on Lake Como is a little bit different from others as it actually takes place during the late afternoon and sunset, making it extra romantic.

On this particular tour , you really have the chance to soak up the beauty of the lake.

It also starts off in Milan , so you don’t have to worry about arranging transport or accommodation in Lake Como itself (which can be pricey).

You’ll be picked up by an air-conditioned coach and whisked to the lake, where your tour guide will explain the different sights and villas you can see from the water.

This Lake Como sunset cruise has yet more added value. That’s because the tour also includes a walking tour of Como town, where you can see the Gothic cathedral, and ride the funicular up to the town of Brunate.

Private Como Lake Boat Tour

If you’re looking for a private boat tour of Lake Como , rather than a group tour, then you might want to consider this one.

This tour allows you to see lesser visited, more under-the-radar spots that some of the more mainstream tours may not visit.

Your knowledgeable, friendly guide will let you enjoy your time on the boat, while pointing out interesting sights and telling you about anecdotes of history along the way.

I’d say that this is a great option for a family or a small group of friends.

Private Como Lake Boat Tour on classic wooden boat

For a more traditional option, try out this Lake Como boat cruise on a cadenazzi – a classic style of wooden boat that was popular for exploring the lake during the 1950s and ‘60s.

For this private tour you’ll be able to book yourself alongside five other people.

You’ll be taken to some beautiful, fascinating sights, seeing the famous lakeside villas as you pass by, cruising past sun-dappled islands, and you’ll even get the chance to cool off with a swim in the lake itself (after all, Lake Como is one of the best beach destinations near Milan for a reason)!

An awesome option if you’re looking for a boat tour for a special occasion, largely because that wooden cadenazzi is so romantic.

From Como: Lugano, Bellagio and Cruise Experience

Of all the boat tours in Lake Como, this one is a very complete tour. Not only do you get to cruise around Lake Como, but you’ll also visit Switzerland, too. Yep, two countries in one day!

The tour departs from Como in a coach, where you’ll be driven to the Swiss city of Lugano, which sits on the shores of its very own beautiful lake.

Here you’ll be able to see some sights, sample some Swiss chocolate and enjoy a delicious lunch. From there, back in Italy, you’ll go to the village of Cadenabbia, situated on the western shores of Lake Como.

Then you’ll be taken across the lake by boat to Bellagio, where you’ll get some free time, soaking up the ambience of it all, and then it’s aboard a ferry to see more of the lake before heading back to Como.

Is doing a boat tour in Lake Como worth it?

Absolutely! A Como Lake tour by boat is totally worth it. There’s a reason it features on the Italy bucket list of so many people.

The landscape is nothing short of stunning, the architecture of the historic villas and towns around the lake is beautiful and seeing it all from the water is the whole package.

Whether your starting point is the city of Como, or you just do the Golden Triangle, a boat tour is a fun activity that will allow you to snap some unique photographs.

However, I personally think that Lake Como boat tours are more for a special occasion, as opposed to an everyday trip.

The tours can be super romantic, so they’re perfect for couples, and for a large group of friends or a family on holiday together, it makes sense to book a private tour together (you also save money that way).

Whilst for a “regular” trip to Lake Como, you could easily just take the ferry, and save some money instead.

I think the tours are a little expensive, and wouldn’t personally splurge on one unless it was for a special occasion.

The ferry allows you to see Lake Como and its sights from the water, enjoying the beautiful scenery, at a fraction of the cost.

It’s obviously not the same experience as a private cadenazzi boat tour, but it’s still enjoyable nonetheless, and for the price, it’s well worth it!

What to pack for your Lake Como boat tour

Besides the usual travel essentials  that already feature on your Italy packing list , there are a few things you should make sure to pack for your boat tour in Lake Como.

Water bottle – Save on money and plastic by bringing your own reusable water bottle! I like the stainless steel ones because they keep my water cool throughout the day.

Sunblock – The Italian sun can get pretty intense, especially if you’re visiting in summer, so make sure you protect yourself!

Hat – Like above, bring a hat to shade your head and face, which will also help to see better at sea.

Camera – All these Lake Como boat tours are so stunning, you want to make sure you capture them in all their beauty!

Water proof bag – It’s pretty unlikely that you or your bag will fall off the boat, but better safe than sorry right? Protect your electronics from any rogue waves and splashes with a water proof bag.

Fast drying towel – I love these because they take up very little space and dry really quickly, perfect for boat days like this!

Also, don’t forget your Italy travel insurance ! If something goes wrong, you want to be sure you’re covered and don’t ruin your Lake Como boat trip!

Where to stay to tour Lake Como by boat

The best place to stay in Lake Como  ultimately depends on your travel style. Each town in Lake Como has its distinctive vibe, and is best suited for different types of travellers.

For example Como is a bigger city, with a more buzzing nightlife for young travellers, whilst Bellagio, with its iconic Lake Como sights, is the typical luxury stay for couples.

If you have a car, you could also venture out of the main tourist towns and stay in more local and off the beaten track towns.

For example, on my last Lake Como trip, I stayed at Essentia Guest House , a lovely guest house in Faggetto Lario, an unknown town on the shores of Lake Como.

Essentia Guest House has stunning views over Lake Como, a friendly host, a huge outdoors area and even a hot tub where you can relax and enjoy the views.

Heralded by George Clooney’s mega-mansion, this opulent oasis has been welcoming the elite for decades – and with the inviting combination of seclusion, natural beauty, year-round sun, the very finest Italian cuisine, and no shortage of fancy lakeside hotels to pamper you to within an inch of your life, this sparkling retreat has been one of the most popular destinations in the country for locals and tourists alike for decades.

On land, you’re greeted with a go-slow lifestyle popping with splendid architecture and rich culture; as you meander around the winding streets of Como, take a moment to stop and appreciate the opulent touches that adorn many of the buildings. The Duomo di Como , for example, is a stunning cathedral flanked with intricate details both inside and out.

Or, if you’re looking for something a little more unique, be sure to check out Villa Carlotta . This beautiful villa was once owned by royalty, now a botanical garden and museum that features an impressive collection of artwork around every corner.

most popular boat tours in Lake Como

As you’ll see, several types of Lake Como boat tours await . On the one hand, you can be on and off the water in just a couple of hours with a quick highlight reel of the lake’s best bits. Or, if you’re looking to take your time, there are full-day options that will let you explore at a more leisurely pace with plenty of stops along the way.

There are also several different types of boats available for hire , from sleek and speedy motorboats to charming old-fashioned wooden sailboats or big-bodied ferries made for large groups on a budget – it just depends on what kind of experience you’re after.

One thing is for sure: no matter which tour or boat you choose, getting out onto Lake Como is an experience not to be missed. To help you decide which is best for you, we’ve curated a list of the best Lake Como boat tours , complete with their own distinct itineraries and price tags.

Which tour sounds like the perfect addition to your idyllic Italian vacation? Read on to find out!

Lake Como public ferry boat tour

If you’re looking for a tour that covers all of the bases and you don’t want to break the bank, then hopping on one of the Lake Como public ferries is probably your best bet.

Run by the local transport service (the Navigazione Laghi ), these big, budget-friendly boats run on set timetables throughout the day and make several stops at all of the most popular towns and villages dotted around the lake. Just to give you a taste of the stops on the routes, you can find yourself in Bellagio (dubbed the pearl of Lake Como), a town known for its luxury hotels and designer boutiques; the vibrant and steep hillside town of Varenna with its pastel-hued houses; Menaggio, a historic and lesser-known town dotted with walls that once bordered the ancient castle; or Cadenabbia, a small and laidback lakeside spot brimming with luxury resorts.

While those towns are all relatively close to one another, the ferries can also take you to northernmost spots like Colico and Domaso, Lecco in the southeast, or Como or Tavernola in the southwest. No matter which route you take, you’ll be blessed with plenty of time to take in the stunning scenery as you cruise around what is arguable one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Plus, as an added bonus, you can use your ferry ticket to hop on and off at different stops along the lake as many times as you like over the course of the day. So, if you want to explore a particular town in more detail or simply take your time meandering around Lake Como’s picturesque villages at your own pace, this is the tour for you.

Perfect for the penny-pinchers, the price for a ferry ticket is € 3.40 per person. If you want to bring along a bike, it’ll cost you an extra euro; you can bring your car or motorbike too (on the bigger boats), but they’ll set you back a few extra euros too (at least 4 for cars, increasing slightly depending on size).

It’s a no-frills approach that gets you from A to B with sparkling views from departure to docking.

Lake Como sailing tour

If your idea of a dream vacation is away from the crowds, focused on luxury, peacefulness, and a whole lot of stunning views without a worry in the world, then leave the crowded ferries behind and say hello to a day out sailing on Lake Como.

One of the most romantic ways to explore the lake, a sailing tour gives you access to secluded coves, hidden beaches, and cliffs that are only accessible by boat. You’ll feel like you have the lake all to yourself as you soak up the tranquility with your significant other (or close friends).

As there’s no set timetable or stops to make, a sailing tour is one of the best ways to really take your time and appreciate everything that Lake Como has to offer at a more leisurely pace. Your captain will be more than happy to show you around and point out all of the highlights, but they’ll also give you plenty of time and space to just sit back, relax, sip on a glass (or four) of Prosecco, nibble some delectable Italian cheeses, and soak up the oh-so-good rays.

Prices for a sailing tour vary depending on the size of the boat and how long you want to be out on the water for, but you can expect to pay anything from €150 for a small group (up to six people) for a half-day tour to around €400 for a full day out on a larger boat. With a multitude of options – some setting sail from Bellagio, others Como, and others Lecco – there’s always a sailing adventure nearby. (and if you’re not staying in one of the major towns, most tour operators can arrange for you to be picked up from your hotel!)

For all of you foodies, consider one of the dinner options. It’s not exactly a shock to hear that Italian food is delectable, but when combined with a private sail on the calm waters of Lake Como, it becomes an unforgettable experience.

What’s not to love about a romantic dinner date with the one you love (or close friends), fresh air, and some of the best views in Europe?

If you’re looking for an intimate and luxurious way to explore Lake Como, then this is most definitely the tour for you. Just make sure you pack your sunscreen!

Lake Como villas sightseeing boat tour

Nobody’s arguing that a day out on the water isn’t enchanting. However, what separates the best Lake Como boat tours from a typical day of sailing on any other lake, river, or ocean in Europe is what sits on the land which flanks the water.

Besides the towering and lush mountain ranges that provide a glowing contrast of green with the vibrant and clear blues of the water, the shores of this infamous Italian lake are renowned for their luxury, high-class villas.

As you explore the lake on a sightseeing tour, enjoying your Italian nibbles and sipping on your home-grown wine, your friendly captain will wax on fascinating details about all of the celebrity homes and opulent villas which dot the coast, giving you a bit of history behind each one.

So, what can you expect from a villa-focused tour? While each company takes an individual route, rest assured you’ll cruise past at least a half-dozen of the most iconic and postcard-worthy (and expensive!) waterside abodes in the region.

Villa Balbianello near Lenno, for instance, dates back to the end of the 18th century and sits on the grounds of an old monastery. With its picturesque gardens and pair of yellow-hued, castle-like towers, it’s impossible to miss (no wonder it was featured in Casino Royale!). The Villa Monastero in Varenna, on the other hand, is older still, build in the 12th century that’s famed for its botanical gardens and terraced lemon groves. While renovated at the turn of the 20th century, it still stands out on the shoreline with its unique and eclectic Nordic style.

Of course, no Lake Como villa tour would be complete without a stop at the three-floor Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. Set against the dramatic mountainous backdrop and above the road (which gifts it a panoramic position overlooking the lake), this stunning mansion has origins in the late 1600s and features an impressive art collection, many artistic events, as well as beautiful gardens with blooming flowers all year round.

Throw in both Villa d’Este and Villa Erba in Cernobbio, and the majestic Villa Olmo in Como (to name just a few) and it’s clear that you won’t soon run out of notable landmarks on your villa-hopping Lake Como boat tour!

Most tours are a minimum of three hours, with prices starting at around €50 per person, but can increase depending on the size of your group, whether or not you want to tour the villas as well, and any extras that you might want to add on (such as walking tours with an English-speaking guide). Either way, sleep sound knowing that any villa tour is not only picturesque but informative too.

Lake Como luxury Venetian-style boat tour

For convenience, you’ve got the ferries. For luxury, you’ve got sailboats. But if you’re all about romance and style on your Lake Como boat tour, then you need a Venetian-style boat.

Your mind probably jumped to gondolas right? Gondolas have long been associated with Venice, and for good reason – they’re the epitome of Italian romance. Yet what most people don’t know is that Venitian boats come in different forms, and if you’re all about luxury and romance, then the private, classic mahogany Riva limousines – the kind on which you’d see George Clooney riding – are found all over Lake Como too.

Most Venitian-style boat operators will be based in either Como, Lecco, or Bellagio, with some also found in Varenna and Menaggio. All offer similar experiences, though it’s worth doing your research before you book so that you can find one which suits your needs best.

For example, if you’re looking for a quick experience, then you can take a short and sweet ride out on the water without all the bells and whistles. For something a little more comprehensive, a host of tours operate with pre-planned routes that not only include short 15-minutes stops in towns like Varenna, and longer stops (close to an hour) in Bellagio, but also a bottle of Prosecco to set the mood.

Another popular spot on Venetian-style Lake Como boat tours is Isola Comacina, a small, tree-lined island just off the western shore.

On a private tour – tailormade for couples or small groups – you’ll be rid of the crowds, the noise, and the stress; left to admire the sights, enjoy the sunshine, and pick the brain of your friendly, knowledgable driver. If that idea sounds like bliss, then book ahead and secure your spot!

Lake Como private boat tour

Nothing quite epitomizes a classy vacation than cruising past lush mountains, charming villages, calm waters, and Mediterranean villas on a private boat.

While most Lake Como boat tours are shared experiences with up to 30 other people, a private tour means that you can tailor the entire experience to your liking – whether that’s stopping off at certain landmarks, enjoying a long lunch break in Bellagio, or just sipping Prosecco in the company of your nearest and dearest as you sit back, relax, and indulge in the unmatched serenity.

Lasting anywhere from an hour (a short and sweet cruise around the water) to nearly a full day (jam-packed with villa visits, lunch and/or dinner, cooking classes, soft trekking, or walking tours of different towns) a private Lake Como boat tour is the perfect way to see everything that this beautiful destination has to offer without being tied down to a group or a set schedule.

As the friendly captain waxes about the lake’s top villas and gardens from the water, you can set your own course; just to give an example, let’s say you’re departing from Como. After setting sail, you can cruise past the grand Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta, cruise onwards to the popular towns of Tremezzo and Bellagio for a spot of coffee, and then kick on to the lake’s little-known island and waterfall, away from all the crowds.

Of course, all of this seclusion comes at a price. Private Lake Como boat tours don’t come cheap, but if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience (or perhaps celebrating something special), then it’s definitely worth splashing out.

Lake Como dinner cruise

About as romantic as it gets, a Lake Como dinner cruise is the perfect way to spoil your significant other whilst on vacation.

As the sun sets over the water and twinkling lights begin to dot the shoreline, you’ll be seated at an intimate table for two (or more, if you’re in a group) where you can enjoy a delicious Italian meal as you sail past some of Lake Como’s most picturesque villages.

Most dinner cruises last around three hours and include stops in pretty towns like Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, and Menaggio; giving you plenty of time to explore each one before returning to your cozy table on board. And of course, what would an Italian dinner be without some good wine?

You’ll be able to choose from a selection of red and white wines, as well as prosecco, to accompany your meal; the perfect way to toast to a magical evening spent cruising around one of Italy’s most beautiful lakes.

Typically, the best Lake Como boat tours that include dinner go one of two ways. On the one hand, you’re treated to a hearty feast on the deck or bow of the boat itself – nothing quite like dining al fresco as you sail past some of Lake Como’s most iconic landmarks. On the other hand, you’ll dock at a town like Moltrasio and be escorted to a charming and quiet restaurant where a tantalizing 3-course meal with wine awaits, allowing you to see a different part of the shoreline in the process.

Either way, if you’re a foodie on the hunt for a truly unique and romantic experience during your time on Lake Como, then make sure to book ahead for a dinner cruise on a stylish open-top water taxi – it’s an unforgettable (and delicious) way to spend an evening!

Lake Como boat rental

If you’re craving the flexibility to do as you please, want to be rid of the tourists onshore, or simply love being out on the water, then a Lake Como boat rental is the perfect option for you.

With a boat rental, you’re in complete control of your own itinerary; explore secluded coves and hidden beaches that can only be reached by water, drop anchor and take a dip in the refreshing lake waters, or cruise around at your leisure – it’s entirely up to you!

Some boat rentals come with a captain (for an additional fee), who will be more than happy to show you around the lake and offer suggestions on where to go and what to see.

However, if you’re confident enough to take the wheel yourself (and have the necessary boating license when relevant – note, it’s not always needed), then you’ll be able to explore Lake Como to your heart’s content; the perfect way to see the region from a different perspective!

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day spent cruising around the lake with friends on a yacht, motorboat, or fancy water taxi limousine, or an adventurous afternoon exploring hidden caves and coves on a little motorized dinghy (typically the cheapest option), a boat rental on Lake Como is guaranteed to leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

  • boat rentals in Lake Como

How much Lake Como boat tours cost entirely depends on your chosen tour and what is included.

For example, a dinner cruise will typically cost more than a standard boat tour of the lake as it includes the price of your meal and drinks. Similarly, a private boat tour or rental will usually be more expensive than a group tour as you’re essentially paying for the whole boat (and sometimes captain) to yourself.

That being said, there are plenty of budget-friendly options available if you’re looking to save some money; many group tours have discounts for students or seniors, while public transport boats (known as vaporetti in Italian) and ferries that cruise around Lake Como are very reasonably priced and offer great value for money.

So, whether you’re on a tight budget or happy to splash out, there’s definitely a Lake Como boat tour to suit your needs!

best places to visit during a boat tour in Lake Como

As Italy’s third-largest lake, the variety of colorful and historic villages lining its sparkling shoreline is truly astounding.

On a Lake Como boat tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit some of the most popular towns and villages such as Bellagio (often referred to as the ‘Pearl of Lake Como’), Varenna, Tremezzo, and Menaggio; each with their own unique charm and character.

Or, if you’re looking to get off the beaten track, why not explore one of the lake’s many uninhabited areas like Isola Comacina or meander down the Adda River that branches off south from Lecco? Down here, the tourists numbers drop off substantially, showing off the low-key lifestyle and natural beauty that northern Italy is renowned for.

With so much to see and do, it can be tough to decide where to go on a boat tour in Lake Como! To help you out, several boating companies have whipped together itineraries for you that cover the main villas, villages, and landmarks – so if you prefer to sit back and relax, a pre-organized tour is your best bet.

The duration of your boat trip around Lake Como will, again, depend on the type of tour or rental you choose.

For instance, public transport boats such as the vaporetti and ferries typically only run for short periods throughout the day (usually every 30 minutes to one hour) and follow a set route with designated stops along the way. These types of tours are great if you’re looking to hop off and explore one of the villages for a few hours before continuing your journey around the lake.

On the other hand, private boat rentals give you complete freedom to come and go as you please; most companies offer half-day (four hours) and full-day (eight hours) rentals, but it’s also possible to hire a boat for longer periods of time if you’re planning an extended stay on Lake Como.

If you’re after a dinner tour, you’ll typically have three hours between departure and docking, while the traditional sightseeing tours can last anywhere from two to four hours on the water – longer if you opt for one that gives you time to explore the shoreline on foot.

With a host of options to suit every itinerary and time constraint, whether you’re looking for a quick jaunt around the lake or an all-day adventure, there’s definitely a tour or rental to suit your needs!

boat tour in Lake Como

The start point of your tour will, again, depend on the type of tour or rental you choose.

For instance, public transport boats such as the vaporetti and ferries typically have several pick-up points located around the lake’s perimeter (with Bellagio being one of the most popular), while private boat rentals usually depart from either Tremezzo or Menaggio.

Dinner cruises typically leave from Varenna, Como, or Bellagio, while sightseeing tours tend to depart from various locations depending on which landmarks and villas they’re covering.

Most boating companies will provide full details of where your tour departs from when you book, so be sure to check this before setting off!

Keep in mind that, regardless of where your boat departs from, if you book a tour through a company online (i.e. a private tour or a sightseeing tour, not a ferry), they’ll be able to provide transport to and from your accommodation assuming you’re staying within the main tourist circles, or, at the very least, decide on a pick-up point that’s more convenient for you!

As a general rule of thumb, it’s always best to dress for the weather; if it’s hot and sunny, be sure to pack sunscreen and a hat, while cooler days will call for layers that you can peel off as the temperature rises.

Of course, if you’re planning on swimming or taking a dip in Lake Como (which is definitely worth doing!), you’ll need to bring your swimsuit too!

Other than that, there’s no real dress code for most boat tours around Lake Como; just make sure you’re comfortable and able to move freely, as you’ll likely be spending a lot of time sitting.

When the sun is beating down and twinkling off the water, and when the air is toasty and warm, there’s nothing quite like being on a boat on Lake Como. Between March and November, but particularly in the peak of summer, the conditions are just right for a leisurely day (or more!) spent cruising around the lake. You won’t have to pack too many extra layers (maybe just a hat and some sunscreen) and you can take a dip in the refreshing waters without turning into an icicle.

That said, the lake is beautiful all year round, so don’t feel like you have to wait for summer to enjoy a boating trip!

Spring and autumn are both lovely seasons for a tour or rental; the weather is milder (which makes for more comfortable conditions if you’re planning on spending a lot of time outdoors), and the crowds are smaller too.

Of course, winter has its own charm; with the snow-capped mountains in the background and twinkling lights adorning the villas along the shoreline, it’s easy to see why many people consider Lake Como to be even more magical during this time.

windsurfing in Lake Como

Who said this 146 km² lake was all about slow boats and lazy days? If you’re feeling a little more active during your stay, there are plenty of other water-based activities to enjoy on and around Lake Como – including the typical ones like swimming, snorkeling, and diving, of course!

Fancy learning how to windsurf or kitesurfing ? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to give stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking a try? With several companies offering lessons and rentals (often at very reasonable prices), it’s easier than ever to get out on the water and have some fun!

And, if you really want to push the boat out (pun intended), why not try your hand at wakeboarding or waterskiing? A bounty of companies offer tows for both sports, so all you need is a bit of balance (and maybe a wetsuit if you’re visiting in cooler months) and you’re good to go!

Finally, for all the fearless thrillseekers, paragliding and parasailing await. Whether being pulled along by a boat or steering your own way through the air, the birds-eye views above this upside-down Y lake are second to none.

We can’t overlook the land-based activities either; from horse riding and hiking to tennis, golf, and much more, there’s something to keep everyone entertained during a stay in Lake Como.

Lake Como boat tour tips

  • Spend at least 3-4 days at the lake. With so many picturesque towns and villages to explore, as well as plenty of activities to keep you occupied, a longer stay is always better!
  • Don’t be afraid to venture away from the main tourist areas; while they’re lovely, it’s often the smaller towns and villages that offer the most authentic experience.
  • Be sure to pack comfortable shoes; even if you don’t plan on doing too much walking, you’ll likely end up exploring more than you anticipated!
  • Make sure you have a good camera (or at least your phone’s camera) with you at all times; Lake Como is one of those places that’s just begging to be photographed and it’s guaranteed to leave your social media fans teeming with jealousy!
  • Check out Milan! At just an hour’s drive from Bellagio (one of the most popular towns on Lake Como), it’s the perfect stop before or after your time in Como. Depending on where you’re traveling from, flying into Milan and then driving or training to Como may well be your best and cheapest option.
  • Book your accommodation in advance with a comparison site. Particularly in the summertime, prices for hotels and Airbnbs skyrocket, so it’s always best to plan ahead.
  • And, last but not least, try to learn a few basic phrases in Italian before you go; while many people in tourist areas speak English, it’s always nice to be able to say a few words in the local language. Arrivederci! (That means “goodbye” in case you were wondering.)

Final thoughts

So, there you have it; everything you need to know about boating around Lake Como!

Whether you’re looking for a leisurely day spent taking in the sights or something a little more active, there’s definitely something for everyone. And if you’re keen on all-out fancy, rest assured you’ll find it in this beloved celebrity getaway. Just be sure to dress for the weather, pack sunscreen and a hat (if it’s sunny), and most importantly, enjoy your time on the water!

Truly fabulous experience. We were on our honeymoon, so we wanted a private tour of a few villas around the lake, along with some time on the actual lake by boat. This tour checked every box for us. We enjoyed lunch at the il Perlo hotel beforehand, with delicious food and a panoramic view of the lake. From there, we met our guide and captain and were taken for the villas tour by boat. We toured the three villas with an extremely knowledgeable guide, and our experience wouldn’t have been the same without her. Although on the pricier side, this tour was worth every penny. We felt like we were in a movie: aboard a boat on Lake Como, bouncing from Villa to Villa. First class service, 10/10, would do this again in a heartbeat, no hesitation.  Read more about Tour of the most beautiful Villas of Lake Como

Our tour guide Andrea was very puncutal and enthusiastic , he was happy to answer any questions we had during the tour. VARENNA Lake Como

Varenna is a picturesque and traditional village, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Italy . It is an essential stop for anyone wishing to visit one of the most typical and peaceful towns of the lake.

This small village, where you can still breathe in the traditions of yesteryear (above all, fishing), is home to elegant villas with botanical gardens (such as Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi ) and beautiful walks between history and nature ( Castle of Vezio and Sentiero del Viandante ).

Here’s my guide to the best things to do in Varenna , where everything is located within walking distance.

Discover what awaits you in Varenna, on Lake Como!

Varenna, Lake Como, Italy

THE TOWN CENTER Picturesque walks, tradition, and a bay not to be missed

Riva Grande, Varenna, Lake Como

If you arrive in Varenna from another town on the lake, most likely via ferry , you will land near the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of lovers), one of the most inspiring and romantic walks along Lake Como.

You will enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and begin to notice, after a few minutes’ walk, the charming little streets going up into the interior of the village.

Another of the most beautiful things to see in Varenna is Piazza San Giorgio, the town’s central square that houses the Church of San Giorgio .

The church was built in the 14th century in a style somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic and houses numerous paintings from the late 15th and 16th centuries. As you look down, you can see the solid pavement, made entirely of traditional local black marble .

VILLA MONASTERO & VILLA CIPRESSI Two lush and elegant botanical gardens

Gardens of Villa Monastero, Varenna, Lake Como (Italy)

Villa Monastero

A visit to  Villa Monastero is definitely one of the best things to do in Varenna. The villa, located a stone’s throw from the central Piazza San Giorgio, was once an old monastery that later became a patrician residence.

When visiting this famous villa, you will also have the opportunity to see Casa Museo , a museum that collects four centuries of history in an elegant setting with fine decorations and furnishings.

Keep in mind that Villa Monastero is open to the public only from March to November (except for some special winter openings ). The cost of a regular ticket is €10 . Learn more about Villa Monastero !

Gardens of Villa Cipressi, Varenna

Villa Cipressi

Adjacent to Villa Monastero is  Villa Cipressi , a 4-star hotel near the town center of Varenna.

The complex is surrounded by centuries-old terraced gardens  that reach the shores of Lake Como, a perfect location for unforgettable weddings and holidays.

Villa Cipressi’s name comes from the beautiful and ancient cypress trees that are still found in its gardens.

Unlike Villa Monastero, this villa is currently a  luxury hotel that you can book for your vacations on Lake Como. For this reason, unless you are a guest of the hotel, you will only have the opportunity to visit the extensive gardens, full of Mediterranean and exotic plants .

The cost of a regular ticket is €8 (€19 for the combined ticket that includes admission to Villa Monastero).

A few tips for your stay in Varenna

CASTLE OF VEZIO Breathtaking views, ghosts and... legends!

Castello di Vezio, Varenna

The Castle of Vezio is a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna.

The terrace adjacent to the castle offers a breathtaking view of Lake Como and is home to the “ ghosts ,” which are white plaster sculptures made each year in the summer with the help of people who pose for an hour.

Also noteworthy is the permanent exhibit dedicated to the Lariosaurus , an extinct marine reptile from the Middle Triassic, which gave rise to a legend similar to that of the Loch Ness monster.

In addition, on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer (usually from early June to early September) the castle organizes aperitifs on the panoramic terrace at a cost of €35 per person.

The castle, open from March to November, can be reached by two roads:

  • the shorter but rather steep road starts next to the hotel Montecodeno and the walk takes about 20-30 minutes, also offering shelter from the sun
  • the more scenic alternative is the Scabium trail , the beginning of which is almost in front of Villa Monastero; it takes 40 minutes and is also rather steep, but offers splendid views of Lake Como (although it is mostly under the sun).

FIUMELATTE & SENTIERO DEL VIANDANTE Two must-see places for nature lovers

Mouth of the Fiumelatte stream, Varenna

The hamlet of Fiumelatte and its river

At a 10-15 minute walk from the south of Varenna is the hamlet of Fiumelatte , crossed by the river of the same name.

Fiumelatte is a very special river: besides having a white appearance that makes you think of milk, this short watercourse flows only between March and September  (except in cases of drought), while in the other months it is perfectly dry.

An easy walk of about 15 minutes from the hamlet of Fiumelatte leads to the source of the river , allowing splendid views of Lake Como and Bellagio.

Sentiero del Viandante

The Sentiero del Viandante is a stage trek that runs along the entire eastern shore of Lake Como. It has a length of 45 km (30 miles) and is suitable for everyone , but due to its length it is recommended to divide the route into at least 4 stages.

If you want to get a taste of this beautiful nature trail, I recommend visiting the Varenna tourist website , which describes some possible routes to take starting from the town center.

BOAT TOURS & BEACHES Sit back, relax and enjoy the view!

Private boat tours.

If you are looking for private boat tours from Varenna, here are some options that may be right for you!

Venetian Limousine

Public boat tours

❗Looking for information about public boat service? Read my guide to boats and ferries on Lake Como !

Varenna’s pier is located in Via Imbarcadero . Here you can catch boats to any town on the lake (as anticipated, central lake towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo are only 15-20 minutes away by boat).

Plan your trips on the Navigazione Laghi website and, when possible, purchase tickets online or go to the ticket office in advance of the boat departure time.

Beaches in Varenna

Varenna’s main beach is called Olivedo Lido – Lido di Varenna and is equipped with sunbeds, deck chairs and a boat dock.

As throughout Lake Como, there are several small public beaches in various areas (e.g., here ), but being free beaches, they are often occupied by tourists and locals especially in summer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about Varenna, Italy

Is varenna in italy worth visiting.

Varenna is definitely worth a visit! It has everything that you are looking for:  villas, beaches, places to hike and typical restaurants .

Also, thanks to the public boat service you can easily reach other popular  Lake Como’s towns  such as Bellagio (15 minutes away by ferry),  Tremezzina  or  Menaggio .

How to get to Varenna from Como?

Given the distance, the best way to  reach Varenna from Como  is definitely by  ferry service .

Alternatively, you can split the trip into two parts, first reaching Bellagio by bus and then taking the ferry from there, which takes 15-20 minutes to Varenna.

Where to swim in Varenna?

In Varenna, you can swim at the Lido di Varenna-Perledo . Located in Perledo (next to Varenna), the lido has everything you’re looking for: a sandy beach  equipped with  sunbeds, deckchairs , and a boat dock , as well as a restaurant-bar for breakfast, an aperitif or an after-dinner drink.

Which is better: Bellagio or Varenna?

If you love a lively atmosphere , upscale amenities and closer proximity to the city of Como , Bellagio may be the preferred option. If, on the other hand, you prefer a quieter, more romantic setting with a focus on natural beauty , Varenna might be the better choice.

Many visitors choose to explore both towns to experience the unique charm of each.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

When you think of Italy... you evoke thoughts of leisurely cruises on picturesque lakes lined with villas against the backdrop of the Italian Alps... the Byzantine grandeur of San Marco and serenades aboard gondolas in the age-old canals of Venice... Florentine art and architecture that sing of life in the Renaissance, and a stroll in the garden where opera was born... a glass of Chianti in a sidewalk café in hilltop Siena... the haunting ruins of Imperial Rome... hand-painted frescoes whose eloquence is most poignantly experienced in the Sistine Chapel, after the day's crowds depart...

A day on fashionable lake como, cruise beautiful lake como aboard a private boat with a visit to bellagio.

Often called the world's most beautiful lake, Italy's Lake Como has been a popular resort destination for the wealthy and powerful since the days of the Roman Empire, when Roman author and magistrate Pliny the Younger built villas named "Comedy" and "Tragedy" along its shores. Today, the list of luminaries who own homes or villas on Lake Como runs the gamut from Richard Branson to George Clooney to John Kerry. On your visit to Lake Como, you'll explore the lake on a private boat cruise... visit 18th-century Villa del Balbianello, built on the site of a Franciscan monastery and renowned for its exquisite terraced gardens ablaze with magnolias... and the lovely village of Bellagio.

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Our tour guide, Giorgio made the trip for us. Excellent guide and very professional in all he did to make our trip outstanding.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter Italy for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please check with an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Lake Como, Venice, Florence & Rome, though paced to accommodate all of our guests, is nonetheless an active tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity.

Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. There are several long walking tours ranging from 1½ hours in Venice to 4 hours in Vatican City.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Weather and Travel Gear

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures in the regions explored on this journey range from 53 to 81°F (12 to 27°C) and summer high temperatures range from 76 to 88°F (24 to 31°C), though temperatures are frequently over 90°F (32°C) in summer. Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'. Rainfall in Florence is twice that in Rome.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

TRAVEL GEAR

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required for dining with your fellow guests at a Tauck provided dinner. When dining on your own, you may have the opportunity to dine at an upscale restaurant, which may require men to dress in coat and tie, and women in more elegant eveningwear.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. This is particularly important when you visit St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where shorts and tank tops are not allowed.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at the hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Luxury Lake Como Boat Tours

Lake Como is world-renowned as an elegant and luxurious vacation destination. With fans like George and Amal Clooney, it’s no wonder that travelers flock to Lake Como in search of glitz, glamour and the finer things in life. If you’re among them, reserve an upscale boat tour serving a 3-course gourmet dinner along with wine and swanky cocktails. Of course, a destination as beautiful and popular as Lake Como is no stranger to crowds. If you’re looking to get away from it all, a private tour is the perfect solution. Best of all, these exclusive excursions can be tailored to fit your personal interests and needs.

For the best views, choose the “slow boat” and enjoy your 2.5 hour journey from the top deck. You’ll even have the opportunity to explore some of Lake Como’s iconic towns, like Bellagio and Varenna. If you have a few more dollars to spare, spring for a sailboat tour captained by a local guide. Additionally, you’ll get a taste of Lake Como’s glitz and glamour for a fraction of the price.

Lake Como may be known for its luxury and extravagance, but you don’t have to be rich and famous to enjoy the culture, history and natural beauty of this magnificent Italian lake.
