While there are many things you can go without on a trip, a toothbrush isn't one of them. But depending on where you're going and how long you'll be staying, you might want to use something other than what you have at home.

So, what toothbrush should you pack? "Deciding between an electric toothbrush and a manual brush for travel will depend on personal preference and brush design — not all electric and manual toothbrushes are convenient for travel," says board-certified orthodontist Marina Gonchar, DMD.

We tested more than 40 toothbrushes over a six-month period to help you narrow it down, evaluating each for ease of use, functionality, portability, quality, and value. With insight from Dr. Gonchar and other dental professionals in mind, we researched travel-friendly options to round out our list.

Best Overall, Electric

Oral-b genius 9600 electric toothbrush.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The Genius 9600 goes above and beyond to clean your teeth and boasts ample features, like multiple modes, Bluetooth connectivity, and a charging travel case.

It's slightly heavier than other electric models we tested, and since it comes with several parts, there's more to store at home.

Our favorite electric toothbrush is the Oral-B Genius 9600. Though it took us a moment to figure out how it works, we were thoroughly impressed by the feature-rich design. And once we got started, it was very straightforward and user-friendly. This toothbrush has multiple cleaning modes (regular, light, whitening, and tongue) that you can toggle between by tapping the handle. Our teeth felt exceptionally clean and slick after brushing, thanks to the round head that helps you get into every nook and cranny of your mouth. It also has Bluetooth connectivity for dental hygiene lovers who want to get super into tracking and improving their teeth-cleaning habits.

The Genius 9600 comes with various parts, including a corded charging stand, a suction holder for the toothbrush or your phone (for real-time feedback through the Oral-B app), and a hard-sided USB travel case. Though the travel case is undoubtedly handy for trips, the rest is kind of a lot to store at home.

This toothbrush is slightly heavier than other electric options but certainly not too heavy to pack in a suitcase. When you're away from home, you can charge both the toothbrush and your phone with the USB case. The rechargeable battery lasts about two weeks, so if you're going on a shorter trip, you might not even need to charge it while you're away. All things considered, we think the price is reasonable.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Oral-b genius x limited.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Design 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

This advanced toothbrush makes your teeth feel professionally cleaned and comes with a charging travel case for on-the-go use.

The countertop charging stand tips over easily.

We were also big fans of the Oral-B Genius X Limited during our tests. The user-friendly design was easy to use right off the bat. It comes almost fully charged, so you could pack it in your suitcase without charging it first and start using it on your trip right away. This advanced toothbrush makes you feel like you just got your teeth professionally cleaned. It vibrates every 30 seconds to notify you when to switch to the next quadrant of your mouth, and a red light flashes if you brush too hard.

This toothbrush is also Bluetooth-enabled, so you can connect to Oral-B's app to track your habits. It lasts about two weeks on a full charge. Not only that, but it comes with a charging travel case that also charges your phone, plus a charging stand for at home. However, since it tips over easily when on the stand, you'll want to place it somewhat out of the way if possible. Beyond that, we have no complaints and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Genius X to travelers and, really, anyone else in the market for a new electric toothbrush.

Best Splurge

Philips sonicare prestige 9900 toothbrush.

The Sonicare 9900 Prestige looks, feels, and performs like a luxury product and comes with a sleek travel case that doubles as a charger.

It doesn't come with any replacement heads.

Want the Cadillac of toothbrushes? The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige won't disappoint. This high-end electric toothbrush looks, feels, and performs like a luxury product. Out of the box, it's about 40 percent charged and lasts roughly two weeks on a full charge. Despite the advanced design, it's very easy to use — just turn it on and select your preferred intensity setting. You can also sync it with the app to get real-time guidance and track your brushing habits.

The 9900 Prestige comes with a sleek frosted charging stand for your bathroom counter, plus an attractive faux leather travel case that looks like a high-end sunglasses case and charges your toothbrush via USB. Unlike many other models, it only comes with one head, and the replacements are up to $30 a pair. You'll definitely be glad to have this toothbrush with you on your next trip, but since it's a bit of an investment, consider using it as your everyday at-home toothbrush as well.

Oral-B iO Series 9

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Value 4.2 /5

This high-tech toothbrush gives you real-time guidance while brushing and makes your teeth feel as smooth as glass.

It needs to be charged weekly, whereas other electric models can last two or more weeks.

If you're interested in a smart toothbrush, the Oral-B iO Series 9 might be your best bet. Setup is a cinch — just download the Oral-B app and connect it through Bluetooth. The app tells you where you're brushing in real-time, how long you've been brushing, if you're using too much pressure, and when you miss a spot. (You can also use it without the app when you're short on time or once you feel like you've mastered your brushing habits.)

The iO Series 9 has seven modes, including daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, gum care, whitening, and tongue clean. After brushing, our teeth felt smooth as glass. It comes with a charging stand for at home and a magnetic charging case for travel. As with such a high-tech design, this toothbrush will need to be charged about once a week, whereas other models often last closer to two weeks. Still, it charges from zero to 100 percent in just three hours, and the remaining battery life is displayed right on the toothbrush, as well as on the app.

The Details: Electric | Soft bristles | Magnetic charging travel case

Best Features

Oral-b io series 8.

  • Ease of Use 3.5 /5
  • Design 3.8 /5
  • Functionality 4.5 /5

The iO Series shows key info right on the handle and syncs with the Oral-B app to track your habits and score each brushing session.

It takes a little time to set up before your first use, and the high-tech design could be overkill, depending on where you're traveling.

The Oral-B iO Series 8 was also a hit during our tests. Though it took us some time to read through the instructions and set up the app before the first use, it was overall easy to use. The handle is sturdy but not too heavy or thick, with a battery life display, a built-in timer, and a light that glows red if you press too hard. You can track your brushing on the app and receive a score for each session. While the gamified aspect makes brushing fun, it might be overkill when traveling — but you always have the option to use it without the app.

This electric toothbrush comes with a countertop magnetic charging stand and a travel case that doubles as a charger. It has six modes you can easily toggle between, including daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense, gum care, and whitening. Our teeth were noticeably cleaner after using it, and we didn't experience any sensitivity or discomfort. The price is steep, but we think it's worth the investment.

Best for Sensitive Teeth

Oral-b io series 5.

  • Functionality 4.8 /5

This electric toothbrush has a soft-bristled head, multiple modes for sensitive teeth, and a light that tells you when you're brushing too hard.

It doesn't stop after two minutes like it's supposed to, and the travel case doesn't have a built-in charger.

Sensitive teeth? Go with the Oral-B iO Series 5. This electric toothbrush has a soft-bristle head that's gentle on the teeth and gums. It glows red when you press too hard, green when the pressure is just right, and white when you need a bit more elbow grease. We appreciate that it has multiple modes, including sensitive and extra sensitive, though you'll need to read through the instructions to know which one you've selected.

The iO Series 5 buzzes every 30 seconds, letting you know to switch quadrants, and according to the manual, it's supposed to stop after two minutes. However, while the light ring turns to a rainbow after two minutes, it doesn't actually shut off on its own. Still, we loved how easy it was to access all areas and angles of the mouth, and our teeth felt exceptionally clean after each brushing session. This toothbrush comes with a countertop charger and a travel case. Though the case doesn't have a built-in charger, the battery lasts up to two weeks, so you might not have to charge it while you're away.

Best Overall, Manual

Marvis soft toothbrush.

  • Comfort 4.7 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This Italian-made toothbrush boasts a lightweight handle, soft nylon bristles, and a handy head cover for travel.

The bristles aren't contoured like some other manual models.

If you prefer to keep it simple while traveling, a manual toothbrush will suffice. Our favorite packable option is the Marvis White Soft Toothbrush. From the popular luxury toothpaste brand, this Italian-made product features a slim, lightweight acrylic handle. It'll take up minimal space in your toiletry kit and add almost nothing to your luggage weight.

As for the head, you're looking at soft nylon bristles that gently polish your teeth clean. The bristles aren't contoured like some other models, but they definitely get the job done without irritating your gums. We also appreciate that it comes with a head cover to keep it clean and prevent the bristles from crushing in your suitcase.

Curaprox 5460 Ultra Soft Toothbrush, 3 Pack

  • Comfort 5 /5

Each toothbrush has over 5,000 and densely packed, soft bristles that gently polish your teeth without irritating your gums.

They don't come with head covers or a travel case.

For the most bang for your buck, consider this three-pack from Curaprox. These Swiss toothbrushes feature over five thousand densely packed, ultra-soft bristles that promise to gently clean your teeth and protect your gums.

The handles are angled to help you reach every nook and cranny of your mouth. They're also lightweight, which is perfect for travel. Just a heads up, these toothbrushes don't come with head covers, so you'll have to buy those separately.

The Details: Manual | Soft bristles | Slim, lightweight handle

Best Foldable

Lingito folding travel toothbrush.

It folds into itself to become a more packable size while keeping the bristles clean and protected from smushing.

The bristles might not be soft enough for people with sensitive gums.

You might also consider a foldable design, like the Lingito Travel Toothbrush. It folds down into itself, decreasing its size by half. This makes it super travel-friendly while keeping the bristles clean and protecting them from getting smashed.

The grippy handle is easy to hold, and the bristles do an excellent job of cleaning your teeth. Though they might not be soft enough for people with sensitive teeth, the bristles aren't overly stiff or pokey.

The Details: Manual | Medium bristles | Built-in cover

Reach Ultraclean Travel Toothbrush Kit

This handy kit comes with a soft-bristled toothbrush with an antibacterial cap, plus TSA-approved travel-size toothpaste.

The bristles warp pretty quickly.

This on-the-go dental kit comes with a manual toothbrush and a travel-size tube of toothpaste. The toothbrush has soft angled bristles that get into all the contours of your teeth. It also has an antibacterial cap that keeps bacteria at bay while protecting the bristles from getting crushed.

The tiny toothpaste is well below the TSA limit for carry-on liquids, but it should still be enough to get you through about a week of twice-a-day brushing. And the included pouch helps you keep everything organized and accessible.

The Details: Manual | Soft bristles | Disposable with TSA-size toothpaste

Best Disposable

Patelai disposable toothbrushes.

Each toothbrush is individually wrapped, so you'll always have a fresh one to pack for a trip.

They're not as eco-friendly as longer-lasting toothbrushes.

Disposable toothbrushes can come in handy if you travel often. This set comes with 100 or 200 individually wrapped toothbrushes. It includes four colors, so you can differentiate whose is whose when traveling with family members.

Though the toothbrushes don't have caps, you don't really need them. You'll always have a fresh one ready to pack, and you don't have to bother with bringing it home. Of course, this isn't the most eco-friendly option, but it's certainly convenient.

Other Travel Toothbrushes We Liked

Quip Electric Toothbrush : This electric toothbrush is lightweight, easy to hold, and about the size of a manual model. It runs on AAA batteries, so you never have to charge it, but taking it apart to replace the batteries is a bit of a struggle.

Oral-B Smart Limited Rechargeable Toothbrush : This high-tech electric toothbrush makes brushing a fun, enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, the motion sensor on the one we tried was pretty inaccurate, detecting the wrong areas of the mouth and continuously telling us we weren't brushing well enough.

We consulted Marc Schlenoff, DDS, FAGD for tips on selecting travel toothbrushes and guidance for testing them out. Next, we chose upwards of 40 models to try firsthand for an ongoing, six-month testing period. After unboxing the toothbrushes, reading through the instructions, and connecting to the apps (if applicable), we tried them out on our own teeth.

We noted the size and feel of the handles, whether the controls were intuitive, what features were useful (or unnecessary), how the bristles felt on our teeth and gums, and how clean our teeth felt after each session. Each model was rated for ease of use, functionality, portability, quality, and overall value. We featured the highest-scoring toothbrushes here and researched additional travel-friendly options to round out our list.

Tips for Buying a Travel Toothbrush

Decide whether you want something manual or electric.

According to research, electric toothbrushes clean your teeth much better than the manual variety, efficiently polishing away plaque and helping prevent gum disease. Plus, most have built-in timers, which make it easier to brush for the full two minutes, as recommended by dentists. Those with a dedicated dental hygiene routine might want to bring an electric toothbrush on trips, but it's definitely okay to go the manual route for a few days if that makes more sense for packing.

"I've never seen a hotel toothbrush I actually liked," says board-certified endodontist Alexa Martin, DMD, who often travels with an electric model. "Treat yourself and put on a new toothbrush head before you go — it'll feel like a small luxury indulgence."

Choose the right brush head

When buying a travel toothbrush, pay attention to the shape, size, and softness of the brush head. "The bristles should be soft to medium to avoid abrasion of the tooth enamel and gum recession," says Dr. Gonchar, adding that angled bristles help remove plaque around the gum line. "A smaller brush head will allow for easier maneuverability around the back molars and front lower teeth, which are challenging to reach."

Yes, you can take an electric toothbrush on an airplane. Though airlines don't allow spare lithium-ion batteries, it's okay when they're installed within a device — the same goes for things like laptops and massage guns. "Your electric toothbrush can be in your checked bag or your carry-on," says Dr. Martin.

It depends on the type. Manual travel toothbrushes are often just a few dollars, and disposable options can come out to pennies per piece. Electric toothbrushes, on the other hand, often cost $100 or more — sometimes even north of $200.

If you're partial to the electric variety, consider investing in a nice one you can use at home as well as on the go — preferably something with a charging travel case.

You can absolutely use your regular toothbrush on trips. If you have a committed brushing regimen with your electric toothbrush, by all means, bring it with you when you travel. "Make it easy for yourself, and stick to your normal routine," says Dr. Martin.

Most toothbrushes can be used for up to three months (the same goes for the replaceable heads on electric models). However, disposable toothbrushes and other relatively flimsy designs may not hold up as long. Beyond durability, it's important to make sure the bristles stay clean and dry to prevent bacteria growth. This can sometimes be hard when you have to pack your toothbrush right after using it.

If you’re someone who frequently travels, packing and repacking your toothbrush might become an issue. If not packed properly, your toothbrush can come in contact with all the other things in your bag, leaving it filled with germs and all sorts of other matter that you don’t want to end up in your mouth.

Before we dive into our top choices for travel toothbrushes, let’s take a peek at what you should consider in your search for the perfect toothbrush for traveling.

Hundreds of top-tier travel toothbrushes will make maintaining your oral hygiene on the go easier than ever. Before we explore which options are our favorites, let’s look at what should be the determining factors when choosing the perfect travel toothbrush.

Travel toothbrush

Size and portability should be considered first and foremost when choosing the right toothbrush. For example, if you travel with a full-size travel cosmetic bag, you can choose a full-size toothbrush . On the other hand, some travelers prefer a minimalist style of packing. If that’s the case for you, selecting a compact or smaller size may work best for your packing needs.

Manual or Electric

Manual or electric travel toothbrush

If you already have an electric toothbrush at home, you might feel like a manual toothbrush for traveling feels like a downgrade . This is understandable since electric toothbrushes are proven to control tooth decay better.

Hot Tip: Keep in mind that if you’re planning a long-term travel experience, it might be appropriate to pack something that doesn’t need batteries or charging.

Dual Voltage

Even if you’re planning to stay in 1 country on your journey, it’s still a good idea to find a toothbrush that can adjust to different voltages. This is important, especially if you’re traveling to a place that has a higher voltage than what you’re accustomed to.

Some of the newer toothbrushes come with a dual-voltage option that automatically adjusts according to the power outlet they’re plugged into , which makes traveling much easier. If your toothbrush doesn’t have this feature, make sure you pack a voltage converter as well.

Travel toothbrush design

The ever-popular folding travel toothbrush is a travel enthusiast’s favorite . When assembled, the design takes up half the space of a standard-sized toothbrush without sacrificing the comfort of use when fully expanded.

Many of the best folding toothbrushes come with a carrying case that closes tightly to keep your bristles clean and bacteria-free.

The battery is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to electric toothbrushes. Ideally, you want a toothbrush that is rechargeable and can last a week or 2 on a single charge . Battery-operated toothbrushes are not as appealing as rechargeable ones, but they are often cheaper.

Antimicrobial Properties

Picking a toothbrush with antimicrobial properties is key, particularly if you pitch your toothbrush into the depths of your toiletry bag when you come and go.

Antimicrobial strands hinder bacterial growth between uses , keeping your mouth as healthy as possible.

Bristle Variety

Travel toothbrush bristles

There are 3 options for toothbrush bristles: soft, medium, and hard. Most people prefer a medium-bristle toothbrush . If you have a tendency to brush your teeth forcefully, you might want to choose a softer bristle to help protect your gums and enamel.

Pay attention to the bristle material when picking a new travel toothbrush. Nylon bristles are the most common, but if you have sensitive gums, doctors suggest opting for a toothbrush with softer bristles like polyester.

Hot Tip: Check out our guides to the best travel toiletry bags for men and women , as well as the best travel Dopp kits for men .

10 Best Travel Electric Toothbrushes for Your 2023 Holiday

A list of 10 best travel toothbrushes on the market, including battery-powered Oral B, rechargeable Sonicare, and 10 most Frequently Asked Questions answered!

best travel electric toothbrush

Taking care of our teeth is extremely important, and study after study in the field suggests the use of a top electric toothbrush is the best way to go for a better smile.

After testing multiple electric toothbrushes, I have found that the most crucial aspects to consider are their size, weight, and battery longevity, as they greatly affect their convenience and practicality for travel purposes.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the 10 best travel electric toothbrushes, thoroughly tested and evaluated for their portability, battery life, cleaning effectiveness, and durability.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Classic Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, White HX9331/43, 2.26 Oz

Best Travel Electric Toothbrush

Philips sonicare diamondclean classic rechargeable toothbrush.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Classic Toothbrush

We start with a true classic – the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean. Some people, including me, use Philips as a travel toothbrush. It can really help you get a better cleaner teeth than a manual toothbrush, removing 7 times more plaque.

It has 5 brushing modes you can choose from, so it’s possible that you will only need this one toothbrush ever. It also has a 2-minute timer and a quad pacer to help you stay on top of the proper brushing.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean has a sleek and stylish design, and its sonic technology provides a thorough and gentle clean that removes up to 10 times more plaque than a manual toothbrush.

The toothbrush also comes with multiple brush heads, a charging glass, and a travel case for easy portability. In my testing, the toothbrush also demonstrated impressive battery life, lasting up to 3 weeks on a single charge.

However, the batteries are lithium-polymer. While very good batteries overall, they cannot be taken on a plane in checked luggage, only carry-ons.

Here you can learn more if electric toothbrushes can be taken on a plane or not.

hum by Colgate Smart Battery Toothbrush Kit

hum by Colgate Smart Battery Toothbrush Kit

This is the next level for Colgate-powered toothbrushes and travel toothbrushes in general.

The Bluetooth connectivity and companion app allows for personalized brushing habits and real-time feedback, which improved my oral hygiene routine.

It connects to an app on your phone and gives important information about your brushing habits, like spots that you may miss or places in your mouth that need extra brushing.

In my testing, I found the brush head to be gentle yet effective, and the AAA battery lasting up to 6 months was a convenient feature for travel. The toothbrush’s compact size and included travel case made it easy to pack and take on-the-go.

It comes in a very convenient hard case for travel, has 2 modes (normal and sensitive), and can reach up to 20,000 sonic vibrations per minute.

The only downside is that you need need to install an app to get everything this travel toothbrush has to offer: as you improve your brushing, it even gives you points that you can use for rewards.

Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush

Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush

Having tested a range of electric toothbrushes, the Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush stands out as a superior choice for achieving a deeper clean.

Upon unboxing, I discovered that the toothbrush includes a stylish travel case and can be conveniently charged using a USB cable, making it an ideal option for travel.

It has all that the other Sonicare have: a 2-minute timer, with 30-second notifications, high-speed micro-vibrations, and you can just replace the toothbrush head, not the whole set.

The toothbrush also features a quad pacer timer, which helps me to ensure that I brush each section of my mouth evenly.

It’s rechargeable, which is great, but it has a lithium battery built-in, which is quite annoying since the Philips One is a slim electric toothbrush designed for travel, but I cannot take it on my European carry-on luggage .

Colgate 360 Sonic Electric Toothbrush

Colgate 360 Sonic Electric Toothbrush

This is one of the top-rated electric toothbrushes on Amazon, and with good cause: it’s the most affordable while maintaining decent quality. It is actually the best budget travel toothbrush if you want just a vibrating toothbrush and not a fancy one.

Our research indicates that is a simple, yet effective toothbrush that includes AAA battery-powered sonic strokes, and one button. The vibration is what removes plaque from the hard-to-reach areas in your mouth.

Also, due to its form factor and price, it’s safe to say that this is a good travel toothbrush to have if you want to go backpacking, hiking, camping, or traveling to places where the fancier toothbrush will get lost or stolen (yes, people do that).

quip Adult Smart Electric Toothbrush

quip Adult Smart Electric Toothbrush

Another classic in the vibrating toothbrush market. The quip is a smart toothbrush with an app, a 2-minute timer function, and 30-second notifications, and the app count points toward rewards.

Through our testing, we discovered that the travel cover of this toothbrush is fantastic, as it can easily stick to mirrors, glasses, and tiles.

The toothbrush’s sleek design is also noteworthy, and its use of AAA batteries makes it a convenient option for carry-on luggage while traveling.

The sensitive sonic vibrations help you get rid of the plaque, and the app helps you improve your dental health over time. It sits in the mid-range regarding price. Changing the AAA batteries can be a little harder than other options, however.

Slim Sonic Electric Toothbrush by Violife

Slim Sonic Electric Toothbrush

People frequently ask: are electric toothbrushes waterproof? Well, not all of them. Actually, most are water-resistant, but not waterproof: you can get them wet, but not submerged. Not the Slim Sonic by Violife however.

As someone who has personally tried this travel toothbrush, I can confirm that it is fully waterproof and can be used without any issues in the shower.

The toothbrush’s precision bristles vibrate up to 22,000 times a minute, delivering a thorough and efficient clean. The toothbrush is also very well-made, ensuring durability during travel.

Looking like a mini toothbrush, it has a moisture-releasing vented cap, that apparently was made for travel. It is way smaller than other brushes and fits perfectly in your travel purse .

It uses AAA batteries, so they are fine for traveling anywhere. It comes with an additional brush head. There’s no app for this one, unfortunately.

Oral-B 3D White Action Power Toothbrush

Oral-B 3D White Action Power Toothbrush

This is another budget option in our best travel electric toothbrush list.

Made by Oral-B, the 3D White Action Power comes at the same price as Colgate’s competitor above and has a similar design: with one button push, you get 14,000 strokes per minute to clean your teeth deeply.

The main difference we found stays in the battery types: this one uses a single AA battery; the other uses AAA batteries. Also, the design of the bristles and the brush itself is very different.

On this battery-operated cheap toothbrush, you can change the brush head with other Oral-B designs, which is a plus. It doesn’t come with a toothbrush holder.

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige Toothbrush

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige Toothbrush

This is arguably the best-powered toothbrush, both the way it was designed to clean the teeth better, but also the way it functions with the SenseIQ technology.

After thoroughly testing the toothbrush, we found that its companion app, which is powered by A.I. technology, is a standout feature. The app senses your brushing habits and provides personalized feedback on how to improve your oral hygiene.

The toothbrush’s touch interface is user-friendly, and its one-touch controls make it simple to use. We believe that the toothbrush’s A.I. technology does an excellent job of adapting to your brushing habits, ensuring that you receive the best possible care for your teeth.

If you’re looking for a toothbrush that prioritizes oral health, this one can give you 15x healthier gums in only 6 weeks and is up to 20x better at removing plaque. It also comes with a fancy travel case and USB recharging cable.

You will be paying for all that, however, as this toothbrush is very expensive. It includes a lithium battery, so it can only be transported on a carry-on during a flight.

Oral-B Pro 1000 CrossAction Electric Toothbrush

Oral-B Pro 1000 CrossAction Electric Toothbrush

Arguably the best Oral-B travel toothbrush in 2023, the Pro 1000 CrossAction is a double-function electric toothbrush: it rotates the bristles and pulsates the brush head. This way the toothbrush can accomplish 2 cleaning tasks at once.

We found really cool the pressure sensor that stops the pulsation if the brush is being pressed too hard against your gum. It’s not expensive, but not that cheap either: more of a mid-range priced toothbrush, perfect as a gift for your travel mate .

It’s a great model for your dental hygiene, but it doesn’t come with a travel case. It’s rechargeable with a lithium battery, so no checked luggage for this model either.

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100 Toothbrush

The Sonicare line is really great, and this one is no different: it’s a rechargeable toothbrush, with a 2-minute timer, 30-second notification, and the longest battery life in the category (14 days).

It comes in 4 colors, so you can choose the looks of your travel toothbrush. It has a pressure sensor and a brush head replacement reminder. It doesn’t come with a travel bag, unfortunately, and it’s lithium-powered.

The Best Electric Toothbrush

Our picks for electric toothbrushes, the Oral-B Pro 1000 and the Philips Sonicare 4100, shown alongside floss and a glass of water.

By Nancy Redd

Nancy Redd is a writer who covers health and grooming. She has tested dozens of hair dryers, toothbrushes, and pairs of period underwear.

If you find an automated two-minute timer helpful or you need or prefer to brush with a powered assist, it may be worthwhile to upgrade from a manual to an electric toothbrush.

After more than 100 total hours of research, interviewing dental experts, considering nearly every model available, and testing 36 toothbrushes ourselves in hundreds of trials at the bathroom sink, we’ve found that the Oral-B Pro 1000 is the best electric toothbrush.

Although it has among the fewest fancy features of the rechargeable brushes we’ve tested, it does have the most important things experts recommend—a built-in two-minute timer and access to one of the most extensive lines of replacement brush heads available—at an affordable price.

Everything we recommend

best travel rechargeable toothbrush

Oral-B Pro 1000

The best electric toothbrush.

The rechargeable Oral-B Pro 1000 has the most important features for a reasonable price: a two-minute timer with handy quadrant pacing and compatibility with the largest range of widely available replacement brush heads. It has a pressure sensor and a long-lasting battery.

Buying Options

best travel rechargeable toothbrush

Philips Sonicare 4100

Quieter brush, more expensive refills.

The Philips Sonicare 4100 also has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing but is less noisy compared with the Oral-B Pro 1000. It’s compatible with a smaller range of (more-expensive) brush heads. It charges via USB and has a pressure sensor.

What to look for

A quality electric toothbrush does most of the “brushing” for you. All you need to do is glide the brush head gently across teeth.

Dentists recommend brushing for two minutes twice a day. An onboard automated timer helps you brush for the full two minutes.

We prefer toothbrushes that are compatible with a wide range of affordable replacement brush heads.

The Oral-B Pro 1000 toothbrush, which is compatible with nearly all the brand’s replacement brush heads, has an onboard two-minute timer with helpful quadrant pacing, keeping you on task (moving the brush around your mouth, cleaning all your teeth) for the recommended amount of brushing time. It also has a pressure sensor to let you know when you’re brushing too hard. Our testers have found its oscillating brushing motion especially effective: It feels plenty powerful to deliver a reliable cleaning. The Pro 1000 comes with a minimalist charging pedestal that simply requires dropping the brush onto a peg. Fully charged, it lasts for at least a week of twice-daily two-minute brushing sessions before needing a recharge, which is on a par with the other toothbrushes we tested in this price range and plenty for most people. The biggest drawback: It’s louder than other brushes we’ve tested.

Sample replacement brush head costs:

  • Oral-B : $4
  • Generic : 75¢

Approximate cost of ownership ($50 brush handle 1 + four Oral-B replacement heads) after:

  • One year: $66
  • Three years: $98

If you can’t find the Oral-B Pro 1000, or if you prefer a quieter brush with a head that vibrates back and forth instead of oscillates, we recommend the Philips Sonicare 4100 . Like the Pro 1000, the 4100 has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing plus a pressure sensor and is not trumped up with unproven features. The 4100 runs much more quietly than the Pro 1000, but unlike the Pro 1000, it comes to a full stop after two minutes of brushing (rather than restarting the cycle as the Pro 1000 does) and has a less diverse, more expensive range of brush heads, giving you fewer options for head shapes and bristle textures. However, the 4100  has two intensity settings (meaning you can brush with strong or stronger vibrations), and its battery lasts longer on a full charge than that of the Pro 1000. Since October 2021, the charging pedestal that accompanies any new 4100 has only a USB plug. Customers can request a free two-prong plug adapter from Philips Sonicare.

  • Philips Sonicare : $10
  • Generic : $1

Approximate cost of ownership ($50 brush handle + four Philips Sonicare replacement heads) after:

  • One year: $90
  • Three years: $170

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: oral-b pro 1000, runner-up: philips sonicare 4100, other good rechargeable electric toothbrushes, the features you don’t need (what you get if you spend more), is “sonic” brushing better, what about quip, what about smart toothbrushes, care and maintenance, how to reuse old toothbrush heads, how to dispose of an electric toothbrush, the competition.

We spoke with several experts on the subject of oral health, including dentists, dental hygienists, faculty at leading dental schools and research universities, as well as consumer advisers appointed by the American Dental Association (ADA), which confers a Seal of Acceptance on dental care products that seek the certification and meet a set of agreed-upon criteria. We also consulted experts and caregivers who help others with oral hygiene.

Altogether, over the past nine years, we’ve invested 100-plus hours in researching, evaluating, and testing more than three dozen powered toothbrushes.

Per American Dental Association recommendations, the only thing you need to brush your teeth effectively is a toothbrush—manual or electric—that you use properly and the fluoride-containing toothpaste of your choice.

Powered toothbrushes have been shown to remove more plaque and do more to reduce gingivitis than manual toothbrushes, though that reduction may come only from having a brush that encourages the habit of brushing for two full minutes per session. 2 If you find yourself struggling to brush for a full two minutes, if you tend to brush unevenly, or if manual brushing feels like too much labor 3 , upgrading from a manual toothbrush to an electric one that automates these elements may make sense.

If you already have an electric toothbrush you’re happy with, there’s no need to consider upgrading. If you use a manual brush and don’t struggle to maintain good brushing habits, there’s little reason to consider upgrading in that case, either.

Electric toothbrushes are more expensive than manual ones, and not just at the outset. Powered brushes typically cost more than 10 times as much as manual toothbrushes, and you have to replace the brush heads at the same frequency (every three months), each for about the same cost as a manual brush . What you get for the higher cost is less friction in achieving good brushing habits.

On average, without a countdown clock, “folks brush 46 seconds,” said Joan Gluch , PhD, RDH, PHDHP, the division chief of community oral health at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine. “With timers, people will go to at least the two minutes. Clinically, we see patients do better with powered toothbrushes.”

Dr. Mark Wolff , dean of University of Pennsylvania's School of Dental Medicine, agreed. Powered toothbrushing “helps people that don’t brush well,” he said. “If you need the guidance, invest in the guidance.”

Multiple electric toothbrushes bunched together against a white background.

After talking with experts and sorting through the dental care research, which is littered with clinical studies sponsored by the companies that make the toothbrushes and other products being tested, we’ve learned that all you really need out of an electric toothbrush is a powerful motor and a two-minute timer to make sure you brush your teeth for the right amount of time. Nice-to-haves include quadrant pacing (when a brush either produces an additional buzz or stops buzzing every 30 seconds, letting you know it’s time to move on to brush another quarter of your teeth) or a pressure sensor (when a brush either produces an additional buzz, stops buzzing, or flashes a light letting you know you’re applying too much pressure when brushing).

For this guide, we focused on electric toothbrushes with rechargeable batteries. Those with replaceable batteries tend to have less-powerful motors and produce more battery waste over their usable lives.

In deciding which rechargeable electric toothbrushes to recommend we prioritized:

  • An automated two-minute timer: Just about all electric brushes have this feature. The better ones have a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing that aids you in spending an even 30 seconds brushing the teeth in each quadrant of your mouth.
  • Affordable, widely available replacement heads: Brush head preferences are personal. Dr. Bruce Schechner , a New York-based general and cosmetic dentist, said that “everyone reacts differently” to brush shapes and sizes, and those factors don’t matter “as long as you’re using one you feel comfortable with.” Wolff said that whether a brush head includes elements like rubber flaps doesn’t matter, but brushes should be “soft to medium, at hardest.” We looked for electric toothbrushes that are compatible with a wide variety of soft-bristle brush heads.

We also considered:

  • Warranty coverage: Ideally, an electric toothbrush should be covered by a warranty for at least a year. We eliminated models from our consideration that customer reviewers have said bricked shortly after a warranty period expired.
  • A pleasing vibration or oscillation: Some electric toothbrushes vibrate back and forth, some have more of an oscillating, or rotating, motion. We asked all the dental experts we spoke to if certain brushes could remove more plaque than others. They all said the type of brush doesn't matter. Ultimately it is a matter of personal preference. “Sonic” toothbrushes , like those from Philips Sonicare and Waterpik, tend to be quieter and have a vibration-like movement, and oscillating brushes, like Oral-B’s, are louder.
  • Pressure sensors: Some people have the tendency to brush too hard, which can cause gum damage, among other issues. Pressure sensors that buzz, beep, or light up can let someone know when to let up while brushing. Some people find this feature incredibly useful . Others don’t.

The most expensive electric toothbrushes can cost 20 times as much as inexpensive ones. Over years of testing we’ve concluded that the most expensive models offer no meaningful health benefits over much more moderately priced ones. Manufacturers have blown up the high end with scientific-sounding “features” like cleaning modes and UV lights; nothing proves these extras work, let alone that they are necessary. All an electric toothbrush can really offer is automation of the brushing process by adding a timer and easing some of the physical labor, according to the researchers and dentists we spoke to.

Over the past eight years we’ve tested, and in many cases retested, more than three dozen different electric toothbrushes. We assessed what it’s like to use each brush twice daily over several months and—for our picks—years. This involved timing brushing sessions and battery lives, replacing brush heads (every three months, or more frequently as needed), and cleaning the handles and charging stands. To stress-test each brush shortly after unboxing, we dropped it onto a tile floor from chest height and submerged it in water while running for a full two-minute brushing cycle.

Although we were quite certain based on our background research alone that many deluxe-sounding features are not worth paying more for, we did test higher-end brushes from Oral-B, Philips Sonicare, and other companies to compare their usability against that of the simplest models and assess if their overall cleaning experiences were better. They were not .

What about the ADA Seal of Acceptance?

As part of the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance program, the makers of oral care products, such as manual toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss , electric toothbrushes, and water flossers , can choose to submit data for an ADA-associated panel to review according to a set of criteria. Not all companies seek this certification for their products.

In September 2017, Oral-B became the first brand of electric toothbrush to receive the ADA seal, with five series of the Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush earning this distinction. Our pick was included in the first group of electric toothbrushes to receive the ADA Seal of Acceptance, in September 2017 (two years after we first recommended the model). The ADA has since given the seal to other manufacturers , including Philips Sonicare.

Because the only factors that the ADA has found critical to maintaining oral health are brushing for two minutes with a reasonably soft brush and using proper technique , we consider an ADA Seal nice but not necessary.

The Oral-B Pro 1000, with white brush handle and white brush head.

The Pro 1000 model from Oral-B comes with all the features most of our experts recommend, for one of the lowest prices. It has a two-minute timer (with a nice-to-have quadrant alert at 30-second intervals) and is compatible with a wide selection of affordable brush heads. We’ve recommended this brush since 2015, and it continues to perform well in long-term testing . In September 2017, the Pro 1000 was among the first five electric toothbrushes to receive the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The Pro 1000 has comfortable-feeling oscillating bristles, a simple one-button interface, and a battery that in our tests lasted on average 11.5 days with twice-daily use. The body survived drop tests on the floor and into water. Best of all, you’re not getting overcharged for features like digital monitors, travel cases, or inductive chargers—none of which will actually get your teeth any cleaner than the Pro 1000 can.

The one-button simplicity is a great feature. The Pro 1000’s quadrant-pacing timer goes off every 30 seconds, alerting the user of the time—to move the brush to another section of their mouths—by briefly pausing. After two minutes, the brush pulses three times to signal that a full cycle is up, but it will remain powered on if you want to keep brushing; it must always be manually turned off. This is nice for touching up on areas of your mouth you may not have given enough attention to. A marginally effective pressure sensor stops the brush’s buzzing when you bear down too hard. (We’ve found you need to bear down harder than expected to activate this sensor.)

Using the right brush head for your teeth and gums matters, and we like that the Pro 1000 is compatible with nearly every model in Oral-B’s robust brush head line. The range is the widest of all toothbrush lines, making it easier to customize the brush for one user’s preferences and recommendations from their dentist.

An Oral-B Pro 1000 handle, with a detached cross-action style brush head standing alongside it, both shown in white.

Oral-B’s brush head refills are, on average, less expensive than brand-name replacement heads for other brushes. Dentists recommend getting a new toothbrush every three months, so these cost savings can add up over time. Philips Sonicare brush heads tend to be more expensive, but the Waterpik and Dazzlepro brands have heads that are roughly the same price as those of the Oral-B’s.

Higher-priced Oral-B models don’t have much more to offer than our pick when it comes to overall brushing experience. Investing $50 into the Pro 1000 gets you access to the same range of brush heads as buying the $180 Oral-B Genius 8000, a “smart” brush , for example.

Close view of the handle and matching white charging base of the Oral-B Pro 1000 electric toothbrush.

The Pro 1000 is rated to last for seven days of brushing sessions on one charge; in our real-world testing, it lasted for 11.5 days on average, which is typical for a brush in this price range. Like the more expensive models we tested, this brush survived its drop and dunk tests, drops easily onto its charging cradle, and is designed so that swapping our brush heads is quick and easy.

The Pro 1000 is also quite comfortable to use. Oral-B models use rotation (“oscillation”) and pulsation, so the brushes don’t buzz as intensely when the back side of the brush’s head touches your other teeth. All Philips Sonicare models vibrate at the same (high) frequency and produce a more jarring sensation when the back of the brush collides with other teeth.

The Pro 1000 has a limited two-year warranty that requires the buyer to retain their receipt and ship the brush to an authorized service center if it needs fixing. This is typical.

How the Oral-B Pro 1000 has held up

Two power cords and charging bases that have been long term tested with their respective electric toothbrushes.

The most significant thing about any powered toothbrush that might change over the course of its lifetime is the battery life; over the years, rechargeable batteries tend to lose capacity. In the case of a toothbrush, this might mean it becomes less powerful or doesn’t hold a charge for as many days. While you can find some unofficial instructions for hacking a toothbrush to replace its battery, Oral-B and Philips Sonicare both say that the batteries inside its powered toothbrushes, which are sealed within the brush handles, are not replaceable . Breaking open the handle voids the toothbrush’s warranty.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Overall, we found oscillating Oral-B toothbrushes to be louder and more sonically grating than vibrating Philips Sonicare models. Without a point of comparison, this may go undetected. (It’s also something our testers quickly got used to.)

When we first recommended this brush, it had only one cleaning mode. It now has three (“daily clean,” “sensitive,” and “whitening”), two of which experts say are unnecessary, and which you have to cycle through using the single on/off button.

As with most of the toothbrush models we tested, the battery life indicator on the Pro 1000 is vague: It lets you know when the battery is full (a continuous green light for five seconds after you remove it from the charging base) and when it is “low” (a red flashing light after turning the brush off). Oral-B does not specify how long it takes to get the brush to a full charge, but according to the company, you can charge it every day without significantly affecting the battery’s capacity as long as you fully deplete it once every six months.

Even with frequent cleaning , we’ve found that the rubberized white surfaces on the handle of the Oral-B Pro 1000 we bought in 2017 have become discolored over time. An older version of the Pro 1000 had a grippier handle with ridges, which tended to accumulate dribbles and made the brush handle a bit more difficult to keep clean. A 2021 redesign of the Pro 1000 handle made it more streamlined, with fewer grooves to wipe clean .

The Philips Sonicare 4100, our runner up pick for the best electric toothbrush.

The Philips Sonicare 4100 is quieter than the Oral-B Pro 1000, relying on a vibrating motion that’s more subtle than the oscillating motion of our top pick Oral-B brush (though the vibrations can feel slightly more uncomfortable when the back of the brush knocks against your other teeth). The 4100, which has a two-minute timer with quadrant pacing, also has twice the battery life of the Oral-B brush, lasting two weeks on a single charge instead of one week. In our tests it lasted for an average 16 days of use, so it might be a better choice for travelers who don’t want to pack yet another charger. Like the Pro 1000, the 4100 has a pressure sensor and has earned the ADA Seal. Unlike the Pro 1000, which has three cleaning “modes” (two more than necessary), with the 4100 you can choose from two vibration intensities (strong or stronger), which may be helpful when first getting used to this model’s powerful motor. Our testers have found that the higher intensity setting roughly matches the feel of the Pro 1000’s “daily clean” mode .

Since October 2021, the charging pedestal that accompanies any new 4100 (or 1100, 2100, or 3100 series brush from Philips Sonicare) has only a USB plug and not a standard, two-prong plug. A spokesperson for Philips Sonicare said that this change stems from the company’s effort to reduce waste and the amount of plastic used in its products. Customers who need a wall adapter can contact customer service to request one for free.

The brush heads compatible with all Philips Sonicare brushes, including the 4100, each come with a tiny plastic hood you can pop off and on to help guard against the coliform sprays flying around the bathroom if you store your toothbrush in open air. Our top pick brush from Oral-B does not include brush caps. (These are, of course, additional pieces of hard-to-recycle plastic.)

A Philips Sonicare 4100 handle, with a detached plaque control style brush head standing alongside it, both shown in white.

The replacement brush heads for the 4100 are slightly more expensive when compared with Oral-B’s, making this brush costlier over the long run. Most of Philips Sonicare’s brush heads are oblong with soft bristles and lack options for additional structural elements, like rubber flaps or “polishing cups,” so you get fewer options than you do with Oral-B.

Like the Oral-B model, the 4100 comes with a limited two-year warranty (PDF) that requires you to retain the receipt and ship the brush out if it needs service.

If you prefer an oscillating brush and don’t need a pressure sensor: Consider the Oral-B Pro 500 , which is regularly less expensive than the Pro 1000 . A spokesperson for Oral-B declined to share the number of oscillations and vibrations for any of its toothbrushes, except to say that there is a difference among its lines. In our experience, the Oral-B Pro 1000 feels more powerful than the Oral-B 500, but not tremendously so. Both have a two-minute timer, as well as a quadrant timer that buzzes every 30 seconds.

The Oral-B Pro 500 comes with a Precision Clean toothbrush head while the Pro 1000 comes with a CrossAction toothbrush head, but you can swap out one for another depending on your preference. In addition, the Pro 500 battery is expected to last for five days on one charge while the Pro 1000 is said to last seven days on one charge (although we’ve found it lasts longer); the Pro 500 also does not have a noticeable light on the handle to indicate that it’s charging like the Pro 1000 (and other higher-end Oral-B electric toothbrushes ).

If you prefer a “sonic” vibrating brush and don’t need a pressure sensor: Consider the Philips Sonicare 1100 . Like the Philips Sonicare 4100 we recommend, it has a two-week battery life on one charge, a two-minute timer, and a 30-second interval timer. Compared with the 4100, the 1100 has only one intensity level instead of two (which we don’t think matters much), comes with a different brush head (the 1100 comes with the C1 SimplyClean versus the C2 Optimal Plaque Control) and lacks a light that reminds you to replace your brush head. This brush is typically $10 cheaper than our runner-up pick.

If you want a smart brush that automatically tracks your habits: The Oral-B Smart 3000 is a barebones smart brush that has earned the ADA Seal. It is similar to the Pro 1000 in form and function, except it has a pressure sensor that lights up if you brush too hard, and connects to an app via Bluetooth. It’s also twice the price. Though this model does not offer brush head position detection, as some smart brushes do , it stores brushing time and pressure data from the last 30 brushing sessions, which you can sync to the app later, should you prefer not to bring your phone into the bathroom every time you brush.

The funny thing about electric toothbrushes is how similar a $70 model is to a $200 one. Beyond an automated two-minute timer, there are precious few necessary value-adds to an expensive rechargeable electric toothbrush, but a lot of unnecessary ones: a travel case, a UV sanitizer (which is of negligible use), maybe a couple of extra heads, a slightly sleeker body, a longer-lasting battery, or maybe the ability to sync to an app . As for sonic cleaning and different cleaning modes, experts tell us they are not necessary.

A two-minute timer is the main benefit of having an electric toothbrush. Spend more than $30 or so, and you typically get a quadrant-pacing timer, which both of our picks have. This element, though a nice option, isn’t strictly necessary unless you prefer that style of brushing or your dentist has noticed that you struggle with brushing evenness. “The time spent in each quadrant is just an aid to help ensure that you brush long enough to remove plaque on every tooth at the gum line and chewing surfaces, assuming you’re brushing properly,” said dentist Matthew Messina, who at the time of our interview was a spokesperson for the ADA. “Plus, we are not aware of studies that show brushing longer in smaller areas has an added beneficial effect in removing plaque.”

Spend around $70, about 40% more than the cost of our top pick and your brush likely comes with a travel case and a few extra cleaning modes, which vibrate the brush at different patterns or frequencies. These brushes also tend to move at a higher frequency, to the tune of 30,000 to 40,000 movements per minute, as opposed to a lower-end brush’s 8,000 to 20,000 movements per minute. There isn’t a proven difference in effectiveness between faster and slower brush movements in existing independent research. We found only one small, old, imperfect study —funded in part by a grant from Rowenta, a German company that made electric toothbrushes at the time—that compared brushes with 2,100, 2,500, and 3,500 brushstrokes per minute and found that the middle frequency was the most effective at removing plaque (“at most 1.5 times better” than the other frequencies and yielded “about 50% more plaque free sites” than the highest frequency). Study participants also said it was tied—with low and middle—for the most comfortable frequency. However, there were only 10 participants, they brushed under supervision only some of the time, and they used each test toothbrush for only five days.

Although our Oral-B pick has three modes and our Sonicare pick has two, cleaning modes generally don’t matter, according to experts we spoke with and research we’ve seen. A “sensitive” mode may help people who find a brush’s normal oscillations or vibrations too jarring. “People with sensitive teeth may find that their teeth are less sensitive when the brush head moves slower or less pressure is applied,” said Messina. Most folks won’t need this, though. Nor “whitening” modes. “As far as whitening goes, all toothbrushes help remove surface stains when used with a toothpaste because toothpastes contain mild abrasives and detergents for this purpose,” said Messina.

Spending over $100 will get you a couple more modes on your brush, a travel case that can charge the brush on the go, and perhaps a pressure sensor that lights up once activated.

The pressure sensor is meant to alert you when you’re brushing too hard, which experts agree is a bad thing. Our testers’ opinions on the utility of these sensors were mixed. Some people find sensors that buzz or light up when they apply too much pressure helpful. You’ll know if you tend to brush too hard if your toothbrush bristles flare out in less than three months.

Around $150 puts you in the realm of Bluetooth brushes (and, generally, a dip in battery life). Also known as smart or connected toothbrushes, these brushes pair to companion apps and typically come with several brush heads, in addition to a charging travel case, and even more cleaning modes.

Per advertising from Philips Sonicare that is now more than two decades old , some people have come to assume that so-called sonic toothbrushes remove more plaque— with sound waves . This is not an effect proven in any research .

There are no independent studies comparing sonic toothbrush models or brands to non-sonic brushes (and most industry-supported research includes the brands’ own products).

We’ve tested every Quip toothbrush: those with replaceable and rechargeable batteries, and with and without Bluetooth. Unlike our picks, which have powerful motors and vibrating or oscillating brush heads that do most of the brushing for you as you glide them across your teeth , the Quip is in effect a manual toothbrush that vibrates—weakly. With a Quip, you still need to perform brush strokes over the surface of every tooth in order to get a complete clean. In fact, manual “strokes per minute” is one of the Quip app’s performance readouts when paired with a Quip Smart brush. “Sonic bristles help clean,” Quip says, “but you need to put them in the right places by stroking them back and forth in short, tooth-sized strokes on all surfaces of every tooth, one by one.”

Because of this, it’s difficult to compare the Quip to our high-powered picks. It makes more sense to compare it to AA- or AAA-powered brushes available in most drugstores. ( In 2019, we did that. ) A reusable brush handle and an optional subscription service—in which you can opt to have brush head refills and replacement batteries shipped to your home every three months—set the Quip apart from, say, an Arm & Hammer Spinbrush Pro .

We like the Quip’s slim, lightweight reusable handle and have found the automated refills handy. We also appreciate the Quip’s two-minute timer with helpful quadrant pacing. While there’s only one brush head style, the back of the brush head is covered in a rubberized plastic, which feels less jarring than the hard plastic on the back of both our picks’ brush heads—especially when it makes contact with teeth opposite the ones you’re brushing. The rechargeable version of this model, introduced in 2022, solves for one of the main drawbacks associated with the original Quip: additional battery waste.

If you want a vibrating manual brush, or have found the brushing motions of higher-powered brushes from the likes of Oral-B and Philips Sonicare too intense, you will likely be happy with a Quip. Over years of testing this brush, some of our adult and kid testers have found that while it requires manual brushing, the gentler, quieter Quip provides a preferable experience. (In fact, we like the Quip Kids model as an electric toothbrush for children because of its gentler vibrations.)

“I’m trying to be less hard on myself in general,” one tester said after using the Quip Rechargeable for a month, finding herself reaching for it more frequently than the Oral-B brush she regularly used. “The Quip offers a lovely way to stick to my goals of being more gentle with myself in all possible ways.”

Like our picks, the Quip has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. All Quip brushes bought directly through the company’s website are warrantied against manufacturing defects for a year (or longer if you maintain a subscription for any refills).

It’s been nearly a decade since the first app-connected, or “smart,” electric toothbrushes became available, but most are still at least double the price of a standard electric toothbrush. We don’t think they’re for everyone, but people who can benefit from added guidance and feedback through the brushing process may find a smart toothbrush to be a crucial tool in maintaining oral health.

Smart-toothbrush capabilities vary widely, but mainly these devices automate the process of tracking your brushing habits, typically by connecting to an app via Bluetooth. Some smart models, like the Quip Smart and Oral-B iO , attempt to track where the brush head is in your mouth, with varying specificity and results.

“One of the things that people look for with Bluetooth connection—or anything that connects to their phone—is confirmation that what they’re doing is enough, or good, or better than what they were doing before,” said Dr. María López Howell, a dentist and, at the time of our interview, an ADA spokesperson.

For people with physical or neurological issues that can complicate oral hygiene, the habit-tracking and coaching support that smart toothbrushes provide can be priceless. “If you brush really well with an [unconnected] toothbrush, you don’t need any of these devices,” said Wolff, who has provided dental care for people with various disabilities for longer than 40 years. However, he added, “the feedback offered by connected toothbrushes is a game-changer” for some people and/or caregivers, especially in cases where, for whatever reason, a person has difficulty brushing all of their teeth well enough, for long enough, and often enough.

People with ADHD, for example, might benefit from the app focusing their attention on the task at hand for the amount of time it takes to properly brush each mouth quadrant. People with Parkinson’s or other conditions that may cause dexterity issues can find support with connected toothbrushes that have the ability to adjust the intensity of the vibrations, and possibly track missed areas. People with autism can often benefit from the gamification of brushing teeth. “I have a nonverbal 14-year-old autistic son who loves his connected toothbrush because the app makes brushing enticing and visually stimulating,” said Barbara Vartanian, the director of Oral Health Advocacy and Policy Initiatives at New York University’s College of Dentistry. “It gives push reminders and has a timer, and also the app puts a funny hat on his face and prompts him to attack the bugs, which he loves.”

Caregivers of people who are unable to brush their own teeth can find support with connected toothbrushes as well. “It is very difficult to clean someone else’s teeth,” said Ann Spolarich, professor and assistant dean at A.T. Still University’s School of Dentistry & Oral Health. When it comes to models able to track the brush head’s location in a mouth, “the beauty of an app connected to a toothbrush is that you can use it as a guide to make sure you’re reaching all the areas of the mouth.”

Nearly all electric toothbrushes that pair to apps collect varying amounts of personal information. In most cases, the only way to opt out of your data—anonymized or not—being disclosed with affiliates and third parties, for a variety of purposes, is to not download or use the app at all.

There are plenty of free apps—including Oral-B’s for Android and iOS —that can be used with non-smart brushes, powered or manual, to help you time and track your tooth brushing, remind you to clean your tongue and to floss, and so on. López Howell pointed to the Children’s Oral Health campaign’s 2min2x website, produced in collaboration with the Ad Council, which offers a series of two-minute videos kids (or adults) can watch while brushing.

“You don’t need all of these more costly brushes,” López Howell said. No matter the toothbrush (manual or powered, smart or not), “brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, floss once daily, and visit your dentist to make sure that you’re doing the right thing.”

Because brush heads must be replaced roughly every three months, the total cost of owning an electric toothbrush adds up. Some retailers sell replacement brush heads in bulk, and some manufacturers regularly issue coupons, which can both help keep costs down. (See our blog post on the cost of replacement brush heads , including some generics we tried but ultimately didn’t like.)

Nearly every electric toothbrush we’ve tested requires rinsing and/or wiping down between each use. Otherwise, you may end up with dried toothbrush-spit residue gunking up any crevices—particularly where the brush head meets the handle. In addition to a quick rinse and wipe between uses, you may find it worthwhile to periodically remove the brush head to clean this junction. In our experience, a cotton swab is well-suited for getting gunk out of any small divots in the brush handle. You can also reuse an old toothbrush head for this purpose.

Toothbrushes and toothbrush heads that are no longer usable for toothbrushing make excellent cleaning tools. In addition to using old toothbrush heads for cleaning the crevices of your electric toothbrush handle, you might also find them handy for scrubbing grout , shower heads , hair brushes , almost any type of shoe , the hard-to-reach components of radiators , stubborn spots on area rugs and car seats , the dishwasher filter, dusty camera lens caps, bird feeders , and many varieties of mesh baskets or metal gears.

Some speciality recycling and take back programs exist. However, most toothbrush heads are not recyclable as part of household waste, so they should be tossed in the trash when they’re no longer useful.

An electric toothbrush should last for years—at least two, in the case of our picks, each of which are warrantied for as long and which we’ve used for five or more. But once it stops working, it’s important to dispose of it properly because the battery can harm people and contaminate the environment . Electronic toothbrushes should not go in your household trash, and unfortunately, programs such as Best Buy’s electronic recycling program do not accept electronic toothbrushes. But you do have options, including:

  • Oral-B offers a recycling program that accepts toothbrushes and brush heads of any brand, along with toothpaste tubes, mouthwash containers, floss containers, floss string, and floss picks. You must pack and ship it; Oral-B provides a free shipping label.
  • Call2Recycle is a national resource where you can enter your zip code and find locations near you that accept batteries for recycling.

You may be asked to remove the rechargeable battery before disposing of an electric toothbrush handle. Both Philips and Oral-B provide instructions in their manuals on how to remove the battery for this purpose. (First, you’ll need to run down the battery until the toothbrush no longer turns on). Once the handle is opened, the toothbrush is considered destroyed and its warranty voided.

Rechargeable electric toothbrushes

Oral-b and philips sonicare.

The Vitality brush is Oral-B’s least expensive electric model with a rechargeable battery. Oral-B declined to disclose the number of oscillations, vibrations, brushstrokes, or bristle movements for any of its toothbrushes, but we noticed that the Oral-B Vitality felt noticeably weaker than the Oral-B Pro 1000 and Pro 500 . It has a two-minute timer but does not have an interval timer that buzzes every 30 seconds. It comes with a FlossAction brush head, which can be swapped out for other Oral-B heads. Unlike the Pro 1000, it does not have a blinking light to indicate if the toothbrush is charging .

The Philips Sonicare 2100 , 5100 , 5300 , 6100 , 6500 , and 7500 all feature the same technology as the 4100 and 1100 , with 31,000 bristle movements per minute. They differ in levels of intensity (for instance, the 2100 offers two levels while the 6100 offers three) and the number of cleaning modes (the 1100 and 2100 only offer one while the 6100 offers three). The pricier models also include accessories such as a travel case, which are nice but not necessary.

The Philips Sonicare 3 Series feels similar to and works much the same way as the 4100, with a glossy plastic handle and minimal gripping ridges. Now that our runner-up comes with a quadrant timer, this toothbrush has no features that we think are worth spending extra on. (It offers three total levels of intensity.) Overall, though, the brushing experience is roughly the same as with our runner-up pick.

The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean is pretty sleek with a matte plastic finish, and it has some real luxury features, like an inductive charging glass and travel case, but its price is a lot to spend for those items. The DiamondClean has five cleaning modes (four too many). It also has some of the most expensive brush heads, with each one around $11.

Everything else

The AquaSonic Vibe is the closest to a Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush dupe we’ve found. Although over the long term it would be much more affordable when compared with our picks (and their lesser versions), we’re not prepared to recommend it as a budget pick without continuing to test it. It has so far survived our dunk, drop , and battery tests, plus more than nine months of twice-daily use. The Vibe, which like our picks has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance, has three superfluous cleaning modes and comes in a starter kit with a travel case and eight brush heads. Usually these features make for a more-expensive brush, but not in this case: At this writing, the Vibe starter kit comes with eight brush heads and costs $37. Assuming you change the brush head every three months, and the brush handle lasts at least two years, the annual cost would be $18.50 for the first two years. (That’s more than 3.5 times less than our Oral-B and Philips Sonicare picks cost for the first year.) You need to register the brush to receive one year of warranty coverage . One tester, a self-described aggressive brusher, found that she had to replace the Vibe’s original brush head in just two months (whereas a Philips Sonicare head would last a full three). Even if you find yourself burning through Vibe brush heads more quickly than you would Oral-B or Philips Sonicare heads, the potential savings add up—again, assuming the brush handle lasts long enough to prove its value. AquaSonic currently sells Vibe-compatible replacement heads in an eight-pack that costs $35 ($4.38 per head) and a two-pack that costs $11 ($5.50 apiece), both more expensive than Oral-B and Philips Sonicare heads bought in more-economical packs. These multipacks are only available in black or a mix of black and white, so if you only want white brush heads, you’re out of luck.

The Burst is a sleek sonic toothbrush with quadrant pacing that you may have seen advertised on Instagram . It has three cleaning modes and a USB-only charging cord. In our testing, the battery lasted more than four weeks on a single charge with twice-daily brushing. Unfortunately, the “charcoal-infused” bristles didn’t last as long—on each of the two heads we tested, the bristles became bent out of shape in as few as three weeks. A company spokesperson said that our tester may have been applying too much pressure while using these brush heads. Burst offers an optional subscription program for replacement brush heads (which at this writing cost the same as subscription-only replacement heads for similar brushes from Goby).

Brüush , too, has an optional subscription program for its replacement brush heads ($6 each, shipped in packs of three). The brush itself offers six cleaning modes—five more than needed—and quadrant pacing, plus optional USB charging. Compared with other sonic brushes we’ve tested (including the Burst and Shyn), on the default setting the Brüush was a touch quieter, and its vibrations felt more gentle. We found that its battery lasted more than 3½ weeks on a single charge. The topmost and bottommost bristles on the Brüush head are longer than those in the center, creating a sort of flared shape; depending on your preferences, this head design may feel like a feature or a bug.

We decided not to test the Cybersonic 3 Complete Sonic and Cybersonic Classic because they have a very limited selection of brush head options (with an optional and dubious-looking “free” replacement program that winds up costing $10-plus in shipping per brush head).

The Fairywill 507 and the Fairywill 508 were around the same price as the AquaSonic Vibe , but they don’t feel as sturdy or look as nice as the Vibe. Like the Vibe, the 507 and 508 are each covered by a one-year warranty, and their starter kits come with eight brush heads. Like our picks and the Vibe, these Fairywill brushes have earned the ADA Seal. In 2021, Fairywill pulled its products from Amazon and, on Facebook, announced a coming “rebranding.”

We once recommended Goby for people who prefer an electric toothbrush with replacement brush heads available through a subscription. When it works, it’s an elegant brush that feels as powerful as the Oral-B Pro 1000 , plus has a USB charging option. However, we’ve heard an increasing number of complaints from readers and long-term testers regarding this brush’s durability, with multiple people reporting that their brushes conked out within a year of use. It also otherwise did not outshine our existing picks in terms of user experience. In 2021 we tested a revamped version of the Goby, finding that it became especially hot during charging. Although Goby is quick to replace malfunctioning brushes under its lifetime warranty (one of our long-term testers made use of this warranty twice in a single year, going through three brushes in as many months), we think that, compared with our other picks, the brush’s higher price point isn’t justifiable. “The most common issue we hear from customers usually has something to do with their battery after many years of use,” Goby CEO Benjamin Goldberg wrote in an email. “Relative to the hundreds of the thousands of brushes we have sold over the years, I would not say it’s a common issue though.” If you have trouble with your Goby brush, email [email protected]: “99.9% of customers get a response within 24 hours during the week,” Goldberg wrote, “and if a replacement is required, the replacement is delivered within 2-5 business days.” Like our top pick and runner-up , the Goby toothbrush has earned the ADA Seal.

We did not test the Foreo Issa 3 , a silicone brush with a sleek and unusual look.. Customer reviews suggest that the all-silicone brush tips lack the ability to clean as thoroughly as plastic bristles, and that this brush has a tendency to stop working not long after purchase.

Greater Goods’s Sonic Electric Toothbrush is inexpensive compared to the Philips Sonicare 4100 . However, the replacement heads come in only one style. And though heads are about half the price of those that accompany the Oral-B Pro 1000 , we found ourselves needing to replace them in about half the time, virtually negating the long-term savings potential for this brush.

Hamilton Beach’s Brightline electric toothbrushes come in two versions: the perfectly functional 86700 base model, which has three brushing modes (two more than needed), and the 86710 , which has two additional superfluous modes (for a total of four more than needed) as well as a control panel. For people who like to toggle between modes, having to press the 86700’s power button for a few seconds is slightly more inconvenient than using the 86710’s mode-selection button. Both models remember the last selected mode for future brushing sessions, and come equipped with two-minute quadrant timers. Brightline’s replacement heads are not interchangeable between models, though, and they typically cost more per head than the replacements for our top pick (they cost about the same as those for our runner-up). Both brushes have earned the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance.

We haven’t tested the Mode brush, which—for roughly three times the cost of our picks—offers wireless charging and an optional nightlight. Like our picks, it has only one brushing mode. But compared with our picks’ two years of coverage, the Mode is warrantied for a year.

Shyn offers an optional subscription program for replacement brush heads made for its four-brushing-mode, quadrant-pacing toothbrush. Purchased individually, the least expensive replacement heads cost $7, which is generally more than what most Oral-B heads cost but less than the price of many Philips Sonicare heads. Although you can adjust the intensity of the brush’s vibrations in each of the modes, in practice we found no appreciable differences between the intensity levels; they felt the same. When activated, the ultrasensitive pressure sensor alerts you with a beep that we found overly loud compared with alerts from the competition (fortunately, you can turn the pressure-sensing beeps off). In our twice-daily brushing test, the Shyn’s battery lasted 3.5 weeks.

If you typically use an electric toothbrush and a water flosser , replacing two separate tools with a combination electric toothbrush–water flosser like the Waterpik Sonic Fusion 2.0 or the currently unavailable Waterpik Sonic Fusion SF-01, which we tested, might seem appealing. But in practice, we prefer using our electric toothbrush and water flosser picks separately. The Sonic Fusion SF-01’s water-flosser nozzle is built into the toothbrush head. In brush-only mode, the Sonic Fusion SF-01, which is warrantied for three years, has quadrant pacing. Replacement heads cost $12.50 each, making them some of the most expensive we’ve considered. Both of Waterpik’s Sonic Fusion models have earned the ADA Seal.

Smart toothbrushes

The Oral-B iO series starts at about $100 for the Series 4 and goes up to about $300 for the Series 9 . Like other electric toothbrushes in Oral-B’s line, this model has earned the ADA Seal. Unlike other electric toothbrushes in Oral-B’s line, the iO is compatible only with iO-specific replacement brush heads (the most economical offer at the time of publication was about $8.50 each in a package of four , but they generally cost as much as $14 each). It has an onboard two-minute timer with quadrant pacing and a varying number of brushing modes (the Series 4 offers four while the Series 9 offers seven). All iO models connect wirelessly to an app that tracks your brushing duration; depending on the iO model, the app may also track where you’re brushing on an interactive color display of the mouth. The idea behind this and several other smart toothbrushes is to provide you with an overview of which teeth you’re cleaning well and which teeth you may want to pay more attention to. We briefly tested the iO Series 9 at the January 2020 Consumer Electronics Show. It runs much more quietly than nearly every other electric toothbrush we’ve tested. Predictably, brushing with it feels high tech: The onboard digital display smiles at you. And the brush head location tracking was, in our limited experience with the device, accurate. Still, we would not recommend that most people pay considerably more than the cost of our picks for this (or for any other) smart toothbrush .

Oral-B’s Genius series includes the 7000 , which has six cleaning modes programmed to a separate power button. The base is very heavy, with large rubber panels in black and silver plastic, and weighted toward the bottom, with the same light-up pressure sensor as the 4000 model. The 7000 comes with a travel case and a charging stand that can hold four extra brush heads encased in a little plastic dome.

The Genius 8000 can track the brush’s position in your mouth, thanks to on-board location sensors and access to your phone’s front-facing camera. Smart capabilities aside, the brush itself, like our pick, is a reliable tool. Like other models in the Oral-B line, it has superfluous cleaning modes and is compatible with any of the company’s replacement heads. The Genius has an on-board pressure sensor that flashes red when you brush too hard (no app needed). If you travel with an electric toothbrush, you’ll appreciate the included case, which can charge the brush handle and a phone.

The Genius X , like the 8000, has extraneous cleaning modes and can connect to your phone. Rather than using your phone’s front-facing camera, however, the Genius X uses on-board sensors and “artificial intelligence” to track the brush head’s location as you move it around your mouth. We found the tracking spotty; the app counted some unbrushed teeth as “clean.”

The Oral-B Smart series includes the Smart 3000 , which connects wirelessly to Oral-B’s app to track how often and how long you brush (and whether you tend to press too hard). The less expensive Smart 1500 offers similar features, such as a lighted pressure sensor, but it does not connect to an app. The Smart 5000 offers additional (unnecessary) cleaning modes.

Philips Sonicare’s 9900 Prestige is the brand’s top-of-the-line smart toothbrush. It connects to your phone—to track your brushing habits—and has extraneous cleaning modes. We chose not to test this ultra-expensive (close to $400) brush.

Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart series includes several toothbrushes that connect via Bluetooth to an app, including the 9500 . It is sleek, with a matte plastic finish, and it has some real luxury features, like an inductive charging glass and travel case, but its price is a lot to spend for those items. The DiamondClean Smart 9500 has five cleaning modes (four too many) that you must manually cycle through if you need to turn the brush off before reaching two minutes. It also has some of the most expensive brush heads, at around $11 apiece.

Philips Sonicare ExpertClean is another series of toothbrushes that connect to an app via Bluetooth, including the ExpertClean 7500 , which we’ve tested. Similarly, we found the price a lot to spend on multiple, unnecessary cleaning modes (four for the 7500), intensities (three), and travel accessories.

The Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected has far more cleaning settings than needed (three total, each with multiple speeds), and in our experience, didn’t deliver on its promise to track whether you’re adequately brushing teeth in every part of your mouth. We found that the brush head location tracking wasn’t accurate enough to give us much useful information. The app, which divides the mouth into six areas, could reliably tell if a tester was neglecting either the front or back of her teeth, but not if she was missing one specific tooth. The app also expects you to brush the parts of your mouth in a specific order, and if a tester moved the brush to an area of her mouth where the app didn’t expect it to be, it didn’t pick up on that.

The Colgate Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1 (currently unavailable) also uses onboard sensors to track the brush head’s location as you move it around your mouth. The E1 vibrates but does not oscillate, and does so more quietly than most electric toothbrushes we’ve tested. Although it does have an on-board two-minute timer with quadrant pacing, this device lacks a pressure sensor (a possible dealbreaker for some), and it is compatible with only a single style of replacement brush head, which can be purchased only from the Colgate website. Factoring in shipping costs, these replacement heads are among the most expensive we’ve considered, by far (a definite dealbreaker, in our opinion). The handle itself is among the lightest and most streamlined we’ve tested, featuring a single on-off button (no superfluous cleaning modes). Overall, we found its brush head position detection capabilities on par with similarly priced competitors.

Colgate’s Hum is a lower-cost smart toothbrush with uniquely designed brush heads and the option of a rechargeable or replaceable battery-operated handle. It is streamlined and beautiful, with a slimmer handle than both our picks and most other smart brushes (the Quip Smart excluded). Like our top pick, the Hum has quadrant pacing and does not automatically shut off at the two-minute mark. Because the back of this sonic toothbrush’s head is a soft material, it doesn’t produce the same rattling effect as the hard plastic backs of other brush heads when it comes in contact with your teeth. That alone may be worth the increased price for some people ( replacement brush heads , specific to this device, cost roughly $5 apiece in the most economical pack). In our experience, the Hum’s vibrations aren’t as strong as the Philips Sonicare 4100’s and not as weak as the Quip’s. You can use this toothbrush without ever connecting to the app, which, like others, tracks brushing data.

Although you could technically use the now-discontinued Oclean One without any of its smart functions (the associated Oclean Pro app for iOS and Android offers brushing analyses), this sonic toothbrush does not have an onboard timer. As a result, if you don’t connect the brush to your mobile device, it’s up to you to time your brushing and determine pacing. In its promotional materials, Oclean promises that people who “use the app to maintain good brushing habits” are eligible to receive “free replacement brush heads in the mail every three months for the life of the brush,” which is covered by a two-year warranty. A company spokesperson confirmed that the earned heads are indeed free; no shipping or handling costs are associated with this offer. We can see why this program might be tempting: For one year of ownership, replacing the brush head ($9 each) every three months, the One costs $102. At three years, the cost is $174 (a touch more than the three-year ownership cost of our runner-up pick ). If the company’s “free” head-replacement offer holds true, and the brush lasts long enough, the one- and three-year ownership costs are both $75—a bargain. But to earn the brush heads, you need to check in to the app every day and achieve a “brushing score” of 50 or above each time you use it. Are the inconvenience and privacy considerations associated with such check-ins worth the potential cost savings? Probably not. On top of all that, the One can charge only via USB.

We have not tested the Oclean X Pro .

AutoBrush and other mouthguard-style toothbrushes

We don’t recommend U-shaped (or mouthguard-style) brushes for kids or adults. They are much more costly and simply less effective than our picks.

Rather than a standard brush head on a handle, these devices include trays that look like mouthguards lined with bristles. In promotional materials (such as the Amabrush video that accompanied the company’s 2017 crowdfunding campaign ), the companies claim their devices can simultaneously clean all of a person’s teeth in mere seconds. (Amabrush filed for bankruptcy in 2019 .) Questions of efficacy aside, a single user could expect to pay hundreds of dollars for the starter kit for one of these devices. And all of the replacement mouthguards cost more than $10 apiece, making these types of toothbrushes far more expensive than any of our other picks.

We haven’t tested mouthguard-style automatic toothbrushes made specifically for adults, such as the Y-Brush and the AutoBrush Pro . But for our guide to the best electric toothbrush for kids , we tested the AutoBrush Kids , which was unimpressive. Not only did it leave behind specks of food, it also required using a special kind of toothpaste made by AutoBrush. On top of that, the brush itself is difficult to keep clean.

After seeing it splashed around on social media—and even on Time’s 2020 best invention list —we also tested the Willo . Marketed at the time as a $250 family-friendly toothbrush for use by up to five people, it has since pivoted to be a $150 kid-centric toothbrush (it still comes with multiple mouthguard-like brush heads for family use, however). Like the AutoBrush Kids, we found the Willo disappointing. It is an expensive, inconvenient, and ineffective toothbrush that our kid testers found uncomfortable to use. The silicone mouthguard on our test unit had a strange aftertaste, even after multiple washings, and did not adequately remove food specks from teeth. It’s also heavy and difficult to keep clean.

List prices; electric toothbrushes frequently go on sale, so these are upper-limit estimates.

This was the overall conclusion of a review published in 2003 and its many iterations since then. But there are a few caveats to consider. One is that using a powered toothbrush makes brushing teeth (and for enough time) easier compared with using a manual one. Another is that the Cochrane review, which is a survey of randomized controlled trials, specifies that some of the trials reported on unsupervised brushing sessions—essentially, participants were sent a toothbrush, either manual or powered, and asked to self-report results. And although the Cochrane review is conducted by a nonprofit, it includes in its survey studies that are conducted by companies that test their own toothbrush products. Unsurprisingly, we’ve never found a study published by Procter & Gamble (Oral-B) that has found its electric toothbrushes inferior to another brand’s (or to manual toothbrushes); the same goes for Philips Sonicare.

A quality electric toothbrush should do much of the “brushing” for you. The idea is that you guide the brush head across the surfaces of teeth at roughly a 45° angle, gently cleaning both the teeth and gums. With a powered assist, there is less back-and-forth motion required to achieve a thorough clean. And in fact, too much or overly-aggressive manual brushing with a powerful electric toothbrush can lead to tooth and gum damage. If you are concerned about the amount of pressure applied when brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush, consider investing in a brush with a pressure sensor , which alerts you to lighten up. Both of our picks have one.

When you’re traveling, the last thing that should cause you stress is your toothbrush. Sure, it’s one of your travel essentials. However, with more pressing concerns during a trip, you don’t need the added worry of possible mold growth on the toothbrush you wrapped in a plastic bag.

Getting the right storage for your toothbrush is essential. We’ve already mentioned the possibility of mold in the damp environment of a plastic bag. Moreover, leaving a toothbrush uncovered and surrounded by the rest of your luggage risks contamination.

Your toothbrush is an indispensable tool for good dental hygiene during your trip. So in this post, we’ve reviewed 9 best travel toothbrushes to keep your teeth clean and your breath fresh while you’re on the go and away from home.

Before we introduce to you the best brands in all the categories, let’s first talk about why it is necessary to have the best travel toothbrush for your next vacation .

Don't have the time read the entire review?

Now, if you're a busy person who doesn't have time to read this entire review, then we've simplified everything.  Here is a table to provide you with a quick rating of the best travel toothbrushes.

Table of Contents

Why do You Need the Right Travel Toothbrush?

Sometimes it’s easiest to compromise on the things you take with you when you travel. You might not want to risk ruining your best suit, so you pick a spare one out of the back of your closet, or you’d hate for your top-quality toiletries to be destroyed, so you pick up a cheap travel-size alternative to last you the week.

However, you don’t want to compromise on ensuring proper oral health, even while you’re on the move. Whether you’re on a business trip or you’re taking a long overdue vacation, you can’t take a break from properly tending to your oral health . Taking the right toothbrush along with you when you travel guarantees that you can take care of your dental hygiene while you’re away from home.

Also, planning ahead of time and doing your research (such as reading this article) ensures that you’re using the right toothbrush for your oral hygiene needs. Thinking that you can just buy a toothbrush at your destination often results in making one of the aforementioned compromises, as you are stuck getting the wrong kind of toothbrush (bristles are too hard or head is too big) or there’s no available toothbrush for sale at your destination.

Using a medium or hard-bristled toothbrush can not only wear away your enamel, but it can also damage your gums , so you don’t want to take the risk of being stuck with these harsh toothbrushes when you’re traveling.

It’s important to have the right travel toothbrush for hygiene purposes. Aside from wanting to keep your body protected from unwanted germs and bacteria in general, you want to make an especially strong effort to do this while you’re traveling so you don’t end up getting sick when you’re away from home.

Travel toothbrushes are designed to prevent the risk of bacterial contamination and mold growth, especially since you’re storing it in close proximity with the rest of your personal belongings that could be holding onto a variety of germs.

Finally, you need the right travel toothbrush for ease of transport. A full-sized, regular toothbrush is often bulky, while travel toothbrushes are designed so that they can be folded or stored in a compact way to make it fit more conveniently in your luggage.

Furthermore, if you have a compact toothbrush, you can stay fresh during the day even when you aren’t traveling+ by easily storing it in your work bag. Your toothbrush is an essential personal care item that can help you maintain fresh breath, healthy teeth, and make a solid first impression . You never know when a travel toothbrush can come in handy.

Now that you know why you need a great travel toothbrush, let’s look at some of the factors that may make one travel toothbrush more ideal for you than another.

What are the Things to Consider When Looking for the Best Travel Toothbrush?

The choice of the best travel toothbrush actually depends on the kind of trip you’re taking. Some factors to consider are the duration of your trip, your reasons for traveling, and what mode of transport you’ll be taking. With these factors in mind, here are some things to look out for when looking for the ideal toothbrush.

If you prefer a manual foldable toothbrush , make sure to choose one that completely encompasses the bristles when it’s folded and has proper ventilation to discourage mold growth. You don’t want the bristles on your toothbrush to be vulnerable to contamination by coming in contact with any other materials, even if it is your own belongings.

If you prefer a full-sized non-folding toothbrush , get a travel case with vents and possibly a UV light sanitizer to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Having a travel case can help shield your toothbrush from contaminants, but if the case itself has germs on it, it won’t be very effective.

When you're traveling, make it a habit to unpack your toothbrush and take it out of its case as soon as you’re settled. Dark and moist areas create ideal conditions for germs to grow, so allowing your toothbrush to air out as much as possible is important.

If you prefer an electric toothbrush while you travel, make sure to get one that has a long battery life–ideally over two weeks. This way, you don’t have to worry about bringing a bulky charger or finding an outlet to use to plug in your toothbrush.

Other Features to Look For

Bristles. Choose the softest bristles you can find for comfort and better cleaning ability. Harder bristles can lead to receding gums and tooth sensitivity, and the truth is, a soft toothbrush is equally as effective as a hard brush when it comes to removing plaque and getting your teeth clean.

If you’re concerned that you won’t be able to clean your teeth well with a soft toothbrush, you might need to analyze your brushing technique. Make sure that you angle your toothbrush so the bristles are moving toward your gum line, and brush with gentle, circular strokes. You only need to use a little bit of pressure to fully clean your teeth. Focus more on the amount of time you spend brushing rather than how much force you’re using.

Head. A smaller head has been proven to clean more effectively than larger-headed toothbrushes. This is because it’s easier to reach the back of your teeth and the smaller bristles can make more contact with the deeper nooks and crannies of your teeth and the space in between your teeth.

Extra cleaning features. If you have specific needs for dental hygiene because of braces or sensitive teeth or gums, choose a travel toothbrush with features that can accommodate your needs. Any orthodontic treatment is expensive, so you don’t want to risk damaging the wires of braces by using the wrong toothbrush. If you’re dealing with sensitivity, you know the importance of taking the extra steps to ensure your toothbrush is gentle and will not further recede your gum line.

Meets travel regulations. If your toothbrush comes in a kit, the size of the toothpaste tube should meet  airline regulations to ensure that you can take it in your carry-on. You certainly don’t want to go through all the trouble of researching and picking out the perfect toothbrush for your needs just to have it confiscated at the airport.

Now let’s take a thorough look at some of the options for the best travel toothbrushes that are on the market today.

3. Best Value for the Money: Mouthwatchers Doctor Ploka’s Antimicrobial Floss Bristle Silver Folding Travel Toothbrush

best travel rechargeable toothbrush

This is the best manual travel toothbrush with natural antimicrobial properties. It features silver that is infused into the bristles that naturally eliminate 99% of any bacteria that start to build up on the bristles within 6 hours. Because bacteria can’t survive on this brush, you’re brushing your teeth with a sterile brush every time.

These brushes are also very durable, lasting four months versus the typical three-month lifespan of a toothbrush. This is due to the unique recovery properties of the patent-pending polyester bristles, which are 1/100th the diameter of human hair and 10 times thinner than ordinary bristles. The bristles are soft, yet firm, allowing them to break down plaque in hard-to-reach areas without damaging your gums or enamel.

These brushes come with a comfort-grip handle and a folding cover that protects the bristles from contamination. Each brush has a one-inch head.

  • Best manual travel toothbrush
  • This foldable toothbrush is compact for easy travel
  • Bristles are very protected when they are snapped into the folded position

This is the best option for a manual travel toothbrush. This toothbrush is easy to carry with you on-the-go because it folds into a compact size and takes up a very small amount of space. It has a folding cover to keep bristles clean to ensure that your toothbrush stays sanitary until its next use. The cap even has a vent to keep the toothbrush dry between uses or when it is in storage.

This brush offers two levels of bristles to reach the crevices between your teeth as well as the surface area. It is very lightweight and comes with a lightweight holder that won’t add a burden to your luggage. It is shorter than the average brush, even when extended from its folded position, but it has a wider handle that will fit easily in your hand.

  • Toothbrush remains dry in storage because of vents in the cover
  • Has good, soft bristles
  • The handle is very sturdy
  • Slightly difficult to open
  • The holder is not durable

6. Best Disposable Toothbrush: Colgate Max Fresh Wisp Disposable Mini Toothbrush

best travel rechargeable toothbrush

This is the best option for a disposable toothbrush. Its bristles gently remove germs and food particles, even if they are stuck in braces or other orthodontics. This is also a convenient brush to take on-the-go, as it is a travel toothbrush that includes toothpaste inside. The built-in sugar-free freshening bead releases minty freshness without the need to rinse.

Because this brush is both compact and disposable, it is great to take with you on-the-go even if you’re not traveling. It is also lightweight, so it won’t add unnecessary weight to your already heavy load. You can choose your flavor between peppermint and spearmint, so you can freshen up to your liking. Finally, it includes a soft pick at the base to help you remove food particles from areas that may be hard to reach.

  • Made out of recyclable materials, which helps reduce the waste of a disposable product
  • No water or rinsing is necessary to use these, so you can discreetly use them anywhere you go
  • This option is less expensive than some others
  • The bristles are rather short
  • These are not to be used in place of a regular toothbrush, so if you’re traveling, you would still need to bring a toothbrush to use for your recommended twice a day cleaning

7. Best Electric Toothbrush for Sensitive: Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 Rechargeable Toothbrush

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 5100 Rechargeable Toothbrush

This is the best electric travel toothbrush for sensitive gums, as it offers unique sonic technology to loosen up and remove plaque, offering you an effective, yet gentle, cleaning experience. The toothbrush has a built-in pressure sensor to alert you if you're putting too much pressure on your teeth, so you can protect your teeth and gums from excess wear.

It also comes with BrushSync technology in the head of the toothbrush to automatically apply the optimal intensity of brushing for your teeth. So if you have sensitive gums, you can select the “gum care” brush head and the toothbrush will automatically choose the best mode for your gums.

BrushSync also keeps track of how you long you've been using a brush head and how much pressure you apply when you brush. This lets the brush know when to alert you to replace the head so you can always know that your toothbrush is in optimal condition.

The convenient travel toothbrush holder is great for easy transport and hygienic storage, and the compact travel charger keeps your toothbrush charged while you’re traveling. However, you will be able to go two weeks using a single full charge, but if you need to go on a longer trip, the charger will not take up a lot of space in your luggage.

  • The best option for sensitive gums
  • Offers three modes of cleaning
  • Moves at up to 31,000 brush strokes per minute
  • Vibration is a bit too strong for some users
  • Sometimes makes a high-pitched noise

GUM Travel Toothbrush Review

Why We Like It: Super small when folded.

What You Should Know: It feels cheap.

If you’re looking for the best travel toothbrush to save space and cash, look no further than the GUM Travel Toothbrush. You can pick up two brushes for less than $15, so you’ll have another ready if one gets lost. If you buy online, you might not be able to choose the color. However, for the price, it’s hard to beat!

The brush folds into itself, roughly half the size of a regular toothbrush. When folded, the brush is contained, so it won’t get the rest of your toiletry pouch wet. Apart from the hinge apparatus, this brush operates like the model you have at home because the container section acts as an extender. It feels a little cheap; however, it works as you’d expect it to. It even has a tongue scraper opposite the brush. What else could you want?

Philips One Battery Toothbrush by Sonicare Usage 5

Why We Like It: One of the best electric brushes out there.

What You Should Know: Somewhat large for smaller pouches.

Sometimes the best travel electric toothbrush is the model you use at home. In that case, you can’t go wrong with the Philips One Battery Toothbrush by Sonicare. It doesn’t have all the features of a more expensive model; however, as far as travel toothbrushes go, it’s better than most.

The brush is powered by a single AAA battery, readily available globally. However, with 90 minutes of battery life, you’ll be set for most trips. While brushing, it has a two-minute timer with a pause every 30 seconds so you know when to transition between tooth areas.

At the time of writing, there are a handful of colorways to choose from, so you can snag one that matches your toiletry kit! For the price, this might be the best travel electric toothbrush for you.

Aurelle TOOB Brush Toothbrush Outdoor

Why We Like It: Container combines brush and paste.

What You Should Know: Length will be too much for some dopp kits.

The Aurelle TOOB Brush combines sustainability and packability into a toothbrush capable of handling any trip. One side of the container holds the brush, and the other has a reusable toothpaste tube. The brush is roughly the same length as your toothbrush at home, making it easier to use. The refillable tube makes loading your toothpaste from home easy, so you don’t have to waste money or materials with a tiny consumable.

Although this isn’t a folding toothbrush, it still feels relatively cheap while holding it. However, it’s easy to use and contains everything you need (except floss) to maintain your dental hygiene while crossing the globe. Plus, the container design ensures that no toothpaste or water from the brush escapes into your toiletry pouch. Sustainable, packable, and waterproof—what’s not to dig?

quip Electric Toothbrush

Why We Like It: The smallest and lightest electric toothbrush we’ve seen to date.

What You Should Know: Doesn’t vibrate as much as other models.

If you’ve browsed the internet for the best travel toothbrush, you’ve probably stumbled upon the quip Electric Toothbrush. It’s one of the most petite and lightweight electric models we’ve come across, making it a shoo-in for one-baggers and ultralight travelers alike. However, every pro list is inevitably followed by a few cons.

If you’re used to a standard electric toothbrush at home, you may find that the quip doesn’t clean as well because it isn’t as powerful and vibrates as compared to most electric toothbrushes, which rotate bristles. Don’t get it twisted—this thing cleans your teeth; it’ll just take a bit longer to get the same clean feeling you can achieve in a shorter period. However, the size and weight are the big selling point when using it for travel.

There are multiple colorways, and the back end doubles as a case. We dig the black-on-black model because it’s sleek and doesn’t show signs of aging as quickly as a white toothbrush. If you want to save weight and space, this might be the travel electric toothbrush for you.

Alpine Provisions Plastic-Free Bamboo Toothbrush

Why We Like It: Sustainably sourced.

What You Should Know: Somewhat large for a manual brush.

The Alpine Provisions Plastic-Free Bamboo Toothbrush debuted on our Sustainable Packing List V2 for a reason—it’s an environmentally-friendly option that functions well no matter where you’re brushing your teeth.

The bristles are crafted from castor oil beans, the brush’s body is bamboo, and the entire toothbrush is plastic-free. However, the sustainability angle doesn’t mean it can’t play with the big buys when cleaning your teeth. It’s not the tiniest toothbrush out there; however, it feels more sturdy than most travel toothbrush options on the smaller end of the spectrum.

Plus, Alpine Provisions donates a percentage of their sales to the Colorado Outward Bound School Scholarship Fund, which we think is rad.

Travel Toothbrush In Valencia, Spain

Why We Like It: One of the cheapest options out there.

What You Should Know: Breaks fairly easily on rugged adventures. While doom-scrolling the depths of Amazon, you may have encountered the Lingito Travel Toothbrush. It’s a popular folding model that takes up little space but feels like a standard offering you might have in the cabinet at home. Coming in at a hair over $5 for two, it’s hard to go wrong for your next trip.

This portable toothbrush feels more durable than other folding models we’ve tested, but it feels fairly cheap overall. However, it is cheap, so we can’t knock it for that. When collapsed, it’s four and a half inches (11.43 cm) and extends to nearly eight inches (19.69 cm), saving space but feeling like a regular toothbrush in use.

There aren’t color options at the time of writing, which is a bummer. For $3 a pop, it’s hard to go wrong with this travel size toothbrush.

SURI Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush Review

Why We Like It: Sustainably sourced and durable.

What You Should Know: It’s heavy and large.

There’s a lot to love about the SURI Sustainable Electric Toothbrush. Before we dive into the good, let’s tackle the not-perfect aspects of this travel toothbrush. One of the primary materials is aluminum, which isn’t as light as most plastic models. It’s pretty large, too, which won’t work for every toiletry kit, primarily if you use a toothbrush travel case.

However, this is one of the most sustainable options on the market, which is worth commending. The brush uses recycled plant-based materials, the aluminum body is more durable than plastic, so it’ll last longer, and the entire device is meant to be repairable, so you can fix it rather than throw it away. Plus, you can ship the heads back to SURI for recycling for free.

Oh, and did we mention that it’s an electric toothbrush? For those looking for a sustainable travel toothbrush, look no further!

Crest Scope Minibrush

Why We Like It: Fits in tight places and comes with toothpaste.

What You Should Know: Not sustainable.

If you already have a travel toothbrush, you might still want something portable to bring to a meal or on long journeys as a just-in-case stinky breath extinguisher. The Crest Scope Mini Brushes are perfect for that and come in a handy two-pack to leave in your sling , purse, or daypack .

The brushes are super small, which can be cumbersome, but the bristles feel like a standard brush and have toothpaste on them. The back end has a pick to get stringy foods or popcorn kernels out of your teeth, which is handy. These aren’t the most sustainable option on this list; however, this mini travel toothbrush is ideal for those who suffer from bad breath or love foods that are a little stinky.

RADIUS Tour Travel Brush

Why We Like It: Budget-friendly and small.

What You Should Know: Can be awkward to use.

Regarding budget travel models that include a travel toothbrush holder, the Radius Tour Travel Brush has you covered. Its folding design is easy to use and ensures that your toothbrush stays clean and everything around it stays toothpaste free.

At the time of writing, you get one brush for less the $5—what a deal! When it’s time to clean your teeth, it expands from its case to be roughly the size of a standard model. However, when you’re down, it stows away approximately the length of an eyeliner tube. It feels a little cheap, but the bristles work well. It works well for adults, but it might be the best travel toothbrush for kids because of the price and size.

Oral-B Clic Manual Toothbrush

Why We Like It: Standard brush with replaceable head.

What You Should Know: A bit large for what it offers.

If you don’t think electric toothbrushes live up to the buzz, the Oral-B Clic Toothbrush is the manual option you’ve been looking for. Upon first inspection, it looks like an electric model—even the tips are replaceable. However, it’s smaller and doesn’t have electronics. The replaceable heads are better for the environment than standard brushes because when it’s time to replace the bristles, it’s much less plastic.

The box comes with a magnetic brush holder, which comes in handy more at home, but might strike your fancy for a longer trip where you’ll stay in one place for an extended period. Although the Clic is roughly double the price of a standard travel toothbrush, it feels more premium and durable.

It isn’t the smallest option, but it’s cheaper than the electric options and does the job manually, no matter where you end up.

Colgate hum Smart Electric Toothbrush

Why We Like It: Has a Bluetooth app to track your brushing.

What You Should Know: It only lasts roughly ten days.

If you’re all in on dental hygiene, the Hum by Colgate Smart Electric Toothbrush Kit is the best travel toothbrush for you. Although it’s one of the priciest items on this list, it’s also one of the most comprehensive. The kit includes a toothbrush, two heads, a charger, and a carrying case.

The battery will last around ten days, which isn’t ideal for longer trips unless you bring the charger. The toothbrush travel case is handy and makes carrying the system on the go easier. The toothbrush connects to an app that tracks brushing and informs you on how you can brush better, no matter where you’re spitting in the sink.

This is the perfect brush you can use at home and on the road without worrying about compromising your dental health.

So there you have it; some of the smallest, most powerful, and packable travel toothbrushes on the market! Whether you’re going camping, on a weekend trip, or across the globe for a few months, hopefully, you’ve found your pick!

If you’ve ever been nervous about going to the dentist (no one likes another cavity!), it might be time to switch up your brushing routine by investing in an electric toothbrush. Unlike manual toothbrushes, electric ones typically use a sonic or oscillating motion to help you get a deeper clean and improve dental hygiene. Best of all, they strive to make brushing your teeth less of a nuisance by offering extra features like a built-in two-minute timer so you know when it’s time to stop brushing as well as a pressure sensor that informs you if you’re pressing down too hard.

With so many dental products out there, from water flossers to teeth whiteners , it can be tricky to know where to start when shopping for a new toothbrush. Do you prefer Oral-B or Sonicare, or are you looking for an electric toothbrush that’s great for travel? What about an electric toothbrush for the kids ? App connectivity, the number of cleaning modes and battery life are just some of the many features to consider.

That's why we combined our testing notes and input from professional dentists including Sharon L. Huang , D.D.S., owner of Les Belles Dentistry in New York City, and Jamie Reynolds, M.D. , an orthodontist based in Michigan, to help you find the best electric toothbrush. After our reviews, read on to learn more about the benefits of electric toothbrushes, and tips on the key features to consider when shopping. Pair your new toothbrush with one of the best whitening toothpastes and check out or guide to the best baby toothbrushes if you have little ones at home.

Trade in your standard toothbrush for the best affordable electric toothbrush out there. With over 133,000 five-star ratings , it's no surprise this Oral-B is one of the best-rated electric toothbrushes on Amazon and outperformed in our Lab tests. In fact, this brush received some of the highest overall scores, standing out for exceptional performance, ease of use and consumer satisfaction .

With all the coveted benefits of an electric toothbrush — like a rotating head to remove plaque, a pressure sensor to prevent you from brushing too hard and a two-minute timer — it rings in at a fraction of the cost of many others. Though it only offers one clean mode, the toothbrush’s controls are simple to navigate without being overwhelming or confusing, and it does an effective job of cleaning teeth. Consumer testers appreciated its lightweight, easy-to-use design, but our pros point out that it's noisier than other models we tested, and there was some residue on the charging base after extended use.

“The Oral B brush has the perfect little angled brush that gets in between my teeth and gets all the plaque and food out that is hard to get with a traditional toothbrush,” says one tester. Just keep in mind that while this toothbrush has excellent value, it doesn’t feature some of the extra features you’ll find on more expensive Oral-B models like being able to adjust the brush head’s speed or sensitivity. “I think this is a very effective basic electric toothbrush that'll clean your teeth perfectly without any fancy bells and whistles,” one GH Institute product analyst points out.

Curious about Sonicare’s powerful sonic technology that helps remove plaque from teeth but not ready to invest too much in your next toothbrush? We love that the Sonicare 4100 offers all of Sonicare’s favorite features at an excellent price , including a two-minute timer, pressure sensor and two intensity settings to choose from, which is especially helpful for those with sensitive gums or teeth. Though this model doesn’t include a travel case, we like its slim, lightweight design and compact charger that can be plugged into USB-A anywhere you go.

Performance scores were slightly lower than those of more premium Philips Sonicare toothbrushes in our Lab tests, but this model stood out for its ease of use, durability and quietness. Several of our consumer testers felt like their teeth were effectively cleaned after using the toothbrush. “I felt like I got a very good clean each time with minimal effort,” says one tester. Another tester liked the brush head’s shape: “It has a compact head so it seems to fit farther back and reach all around the back teeth better than a manual toothbrush.”

Ever wondered what toothbrush your dentist uses at home? Look no further. The Prestige 9900 might be the most expensive electric toothbrush on this list, but it earned the highest overall score in our Lab tests as well as the best consumer satisfaction score .

Pair it with the Sonicare app to guide you during brushing and alert you to any missed spots. For those with sensitive or receding gums, fret not: It automatically adjusts the intensity for you and gently vibrates whenever you accidentally brush too hard.

Several testers felt that their gums were healthier after using this toothbrush and that they noticeably had less plaque. “I love this toothbrush,” says one tester. “The 9900 is very quiet. The vibrations tickle a little and take a few days to get used to, but they make the toothbrush very effective at cleaning my teeth. My teeth feel like they've been professionally cleaned! The app is very easy to use and makes brushing fun. It also inspires me to brush more regularly. The toothbrush is beautifully designed and takes up very little space in my bathroom.”

Testers also appreciate that you can customize your daily brushing routine with five different modes and that a compact travel case comes included. You can even leave your toothbrush’s charger back at home and charge it inside its travel case via USB.

It's easy to forget that you should replace your toothbrush (or brush head) every three to four months . Yes, really! That's why we love Quip. Not only is the battery-operated brush super-slim and chic, but the brand also offers a refill plan as well as toothbrushes for kids so the whole family can stay on track. For just $7 per order, it's one of the best value electric toothbrush picks as you can get a new brush head and battery delivered every three months.

We especially like this pick for travel since it includes a super slim cover that will fit into your purse or backpack without taking up much space . Unlike other electric toothbrushes, Quip uses AAA batteries so you don’t have to fret with chargers or cables while you’re on the road — though there is a new rechargeable version that will last you three months if preferred.

In Lab tests, the Quip toothbrush got top overall scores and consumers were fond of its soft bristles and gentle sonic vibrations. “It actually makes me brush for the full two minutes. My teeth feel so much cleaner in the two weeks that I have been using this toothbrush!” says one tester. Other testers liked the size of the toothbrush, which makes it easy to hold, use and store when you’re done. Some testers do point out, however, that you still have to brush with the Quip, unlike other electric toothbrushes that do most of the work for you. Also, the instructions in the manual on how to brush as well as replace brush heads and batteries could be more clear.

The iO Series 9 is one of Oral-B’s most advanced electric toothbrushes, and though it costs more than others on this list, it’s loaded with smart features designed to help you get the deepest clean . For instance, there’s a real-time “coaching” feature that leverages AI to help guide you while you brush so you never miss a spot. The brush also includes seven smart modes — including one for cleaning your tongue — as well as a built-in timer, Smart Pressure Sensor (it signals red when you're brushing too hard), charging travel case and three replacement brush heads.

In Lab tests, the Oral-B iO received high scores all around and consumer testers shared that there’s not much to dislike, describing the brush as “bomb,” “a game-changer,” a “joy to use” and “incredibly cool.” Several testers even said their experience was akin to having their teeth professionally cleaned: “What’s not to love? I’m addicted to brushing my teeth and using this toothbrush! I feel like I just left my hygienist chair with a professional cleaning,” says one tester.

Other testers were fond of the accompanying app and the brush’s multiple cleaning modes. “I like the functions. You can see that you are using the proper pressure with the sensor light, and the app shows how thoroughly you brush and gives feedback for any improvements you should make” says one tester. Others like the interactive color display, which shows a smiley face every time you’ve brushed for two minutes.

How we test the best electric toothbrushes

double line

Our electric toothbrush reviews are based on extensive in-Lab tests at the Good Housekeeping Institute . In our latest evaluations, we tested 11 electric toothbrushes for their performance, ease of use and durability.

We also sent samples to over 100 consumer panelists who reported good dental hygiene habits (brushing twice a day and having a professional cleaning every six months) to provide qualitative feedback on each toothbrush. After two weeks of use, they were asked to evaluate their overall satisfaction with the electric toothbrush. Here’s more information on how we tested:

✔️ Performance: Product analysts evaluate the toothbrush’s overall functionality, its modes and how effectively it cleans teeth. We then measure battery life, charging time, the accuracy of the two-minute timer and the usefulness of any built-in sensors. To evaluate and compare noise levels in each toothbrush, each toothbrush is sent to Quiet Mark , our partner lab and independent global certification program that identifies how quiet or loud products are through scientific testing and assessment.

✔️ Durability: Each toothbrush is put through a drop test and a water-resistance test in our Lab to score its durability. For the drop test, each toothbrush is dropped from a 30-inch height, or the average height of a countertop, and then checked for any dents, scratches or damage. The water-resistance test is then performed in the Lab’s rain tester, exposing the toothbrush to various water pressures for two minutes.

✔️ Ease-of-use: Once the toothbrush has been measured and weighed, we provide feedback alongside consumers on the following questions: How easy is it to set up? How easy is the toothbrush head to put on? Are the controls conveniently located and easy to use? Is the toothbrush easy to charge? Is the app intuitive? Is the design ergonomic and easy to hold? Is it heavy or lightweight? Did the toothbrush create a mess while in use? Does its size take up too much space?

What to look for when shopping for an electric toothbrush

line break

✔️ Power source: In our Lab tests, people greatly preferred rechargeable options to battery-operated ones. Our feedback showed the battery-operated brushes were ideal for travel, but they didn’t work as well as electric toothbrushes with rechargeable bases.

✔️ Timer: Many electric toothbrushes offer a timed brushing setting of two minutes, broken up into 30-second intervals, so you're thoroughly paying attention to your teeth — front to back and top to bottom.

✔️ Pressure sensor: Avoid sensitive gums by finding an electric toothbrush that gently vibrates when you press down too hard.

✔️ Connectivity: Certain electric toothbrushes feature Bluetooth technology so you can sync to an app to keep track of your brushing habits and access extra features like coaching and tips. Some of the more premium toothbrushes even leverage AI technology to give you feedback in real-time as you brush to understand which areas need improvement.

Electric vs. manual toothbrushes

line break

“Not all electric toothbrushes are created equal,” says Sharon L. Huang , DDS, owner of Les Belles Dentistry in NYC. She estimates that two minutes with an electric toothbrush is equivalent to seven minutes of manual brushing.

Why? Because electric toothbrushes are more efficient at cleaning and more effective at reaching a lot of surfaces, especially hard-to-reach areas like molars in the back of your mouth. “When you use a manual brush, it depends on how you’re brushing [and the motion] versus an electric toothbrush does the work for you,” she says.

Simply put: “We will never move as fast as a sonic brush,” which she favors for its power and ability to dislodge bacteria.

Do dentists recommend electric toothbrushes?

line break

"Pretty much everyone can benefit from an electric toothbrush,” says Jamie Reynolds, M.D. , an orthodontist based in Michigan. After he switched to an electric toothbrush, his own dental hygienist commented on how clean his teeth looked. “Personally, I won't be switching back to the old-fashioned way and don't recommend you do either!”

But remember, no matter which powered toothbrush you buy, the most important thing is your habits, says Dr. Reynolds. “An electric toothbrush isn't a magic wand. It still requires morning and night use — with around two minutes of brushing time — to be effective.” Use it as a way to up your brushing technique, not make up for it.

Quip Battery Powered Travel Electric Toothbrush

Simple, slim, and extremely travel-friendly, the Quip Battery Powered Travel Toothbrush is a game-changer for digital nomads who want to keep their luggage light and their teeth white. With just one AAA battery, this toothbrush has a whopping three-month charge!

With a two-minute timer and 30-second pulse settings, you can reduce gingivitis and improve your oral health. The sleek travel case is also super convenient as it protects your toothbrush and acts as a holder by mounting to mirrors or counters. The slim metal handle is stylish and a guaranteed space saver.

Can You Use a Travel Adapter for an Electric Toothbrush?

Many digital nomads wonder if they can use their electric toothbrush with a travel adapter if they have to plug it in to charge it. The answer depends on the type of toothbrush you have and its voltage.

For example, the voltage in the United States is much lower than in European countries. Therefore, items like hairdryers blow out due to the voltage difference.

One solution is to purchase a travel adapter and voltage converter . This allows you to use your own items in different countries with different voltages and outlets – saving you a ton of money if you’re traveling full-time!

So the answer is yes, you can use a travel adapter for your electric toothbrush, but only if it is also a voltage converter as well . Otherwise, you can have a very dangerous problem.

The Product on Trial

Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush

Brandon Carte , a guy who finally ended his search for the perfect travel toothbrush

The Philips One by Sonicare is an intelligently designed rechargeable toothbrush that delivers better results than a manual brush, all without taking up as much room as a full-sized electric toothbrush.

Philips Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush

Philips One by Sonicare Rechargeable Toothbrush

Maybe I'm just an over-packer, but it seems as though the older I get, the harder it is to close the zipper of my toiletry bag. Between medication, body wash, hair products, and deodorant, my Dopp kit is always completely packed to the brim.

Depending on how much room there is to spare, sometimes I’ll take my electric toothbrush, but if space is tight, I just bring a cheap manual brush and a travel tube of toothpaste. My electric toothbrush came with a “travel case,” but I kid you not, it’s the size of a TI-84 calculator.

As dramatic as it may sound, Philips turned my world upside down with its latest travel toothbrush. It's called the Philips One by Sonicare , and folks, it's a game changer. Somehow Philips managed to squeeze the components of an electric toothbrush in a waterproof body that's the slim size of a manual toothbrush.

Not only that, it cleans my teeth better than a disposable brush, delivers a shockingly long battery life, and its replaceable heads are affordable and easy to find at stores and online.

I like that the Philips One comes in four different colors (black, off-white, peach, and forest green), so it won’t get mixed up with my significant other’s toothbrush. I also think the carrying case was extremely well thought out. It has two tiny holes to drain water, easy access to the USB-C port for recharging, and a convenient flip-close lid to keep the bristles clean and unexposed.

Its micro-vibrations are noticeable and help ensure a deeper clean than what a manual brush can offer. I also appreciate that every 30 seconds, it pulsates to let you know when it's time to switch quadrants. After 2 minutes, it'll turn off automatically. But speaking as someone who has experience using both full-sized Oral-B and Sonicare electric toothbrushes, the Philips One does leave some to be desired on the performance front.

Image no longer available

Although I felt as though the toothbrush effectively cleaned my chompers, the brush is not super powerful. You just don't get the same extreme clean feeling as after brushing your teeth with a full-sized electric toothbrush. Having said that, you'll need to use some elbow grease to get a good clean, which is something I genuinely don't mind since I only use this toothbrush for traveling. Plus, I'm sure if the brush was more powerful, it'd require more frequent charging.

Speaking of the battery, the Philips One lasts 30 days on a single charge — the same amount of time after which you should replace its brush head. I would have liked to see the brush heads' bristles come in multiple firmness levels, but alas, the heads just come in seven different colors . The nylon bristles may be too soft for some, but I think they are quite good. They hold up well and are contoured, which helps remove plaque and reach those hard-to-reach areas.

I was also impressed with how lengthy the battery life is. I've stayed in three hotels over the last 6 months and have only had to recharge the toothbrush one time.

philips one by sonicare rechargeable toothbrush by side of sink

If you want to save some money, Philips sells a variant that's powered by a single AAA battery. That model, which only costs around $25, gets an estimated 90 days of use. Props to Philips for using a USB-C plug — so I don't have to pack an extra charging cable in the rare circumstance I need to recharge it while I'm on a trip!

The Closing Argument

The Philips One by Sonicare is a relatively inexpensive electric toothbrush with a slender build and sleek carrying case. Although the travel toothbrush doesn’t offer the power of a full-sized electric toothbrush, it still effectively cleans my teeth and is an excellent option for on-the-go use. I think it’s worth buying if you’re like me and want to keep your full-sized toothbrush at home and prefer electric toothbrushes to manual ones.

The best electric toothbrushes help you improve your brushing and oral hygiene, using a mixture of hardware and software. For starters, their improved cleaning power is a result of their vibrating sonic brush heads and oscillating bristles. They also have timers built into handsets and charging bases, and some of the best have AI guidance to help you improve your brushing and hit all the right zones in your mouth.

Manual toothbrushes are becoming increasingly obsolete. Many peer-reviewed studies like this one from SGT Dental College and Research Institute have found that electric brushes are more effective than ordinary brushes at removing sticky plaque and preventing gum disease.

We've tested a wide variety of different toothbrushes, from relatively simple oscillating brushes right through to advanced models that work in the same way as the best fitness trackers or the best smart scales : by encompassing a smart element or integrating an app into their design.

To help you choose the right one, read our comprehensive guide below to ensure you're selecting the right brush to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.

Oral-B io series 10

Hum by Colgate

Not a true "smart brush" but a fantastic budget offering, the Colgate Hum comes in a removable battery and rechargeable option, and is pressure-sensitive: the handset will flash red if you're pressing too hard. It's reliable, easy to use, and a good value sonic brush.

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is a powerhouse of a brushing system. It's very quiet, sleekly designed and packed with smarts, offering real-time guidance to improve your technique. It ain't cheap though.

Ordo Sonic Plus

Small and light, with good sonic vibration technology and very cheapt o boot, the Ordo Sonic + is a no-fuss, no-frills brush that will hold its charge for weeks and improve your brushing experience without tethering you to your phone. The low barrier to entry makes this a no-brainer.

Oral-B IO Series 6

Best mid-range brush

For those who want the Oral-B iO Series but don't want to pay through the nose for it, this is the model to get. Very quiet, very powerful, a wide variety of modes, but a less luxe carry case and fewer AI smarts.

Mode

Best minimalist toothbrush

The simple, elegant Mode electric toothbrush is a slender, one-setting toothbrush that looks slick when attached via the wireless charger-slash-wall hook with the built-in light. Although it's only got one setting, it's seriously stylish.

1. Oral-B iO Series 10

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The Oral-B iO Series 10 takes our award for the best electric toothbrush, thanks to its valuable smart tech and real-time feedback that encourages you to improve your brushing technique. This is done with a neat chipset that calculates the position of the brush in your mouth, allowing it to read your technique and nudge you to thoroughly clean each "zone" of your mouth.

We found the brush to be very quiet (much more so than a typical oscillating brush) and felt smooth as you work your way around your mouth. The in-built pressure sensor not only warns you if you're pressing too hard, but also if you're not applying enough pressure to get a good clean, helping you achieve an optimum result. The dock itself will connect to WiFi to display the time and date.

Once done, the Series 10's bright color display will rate your brushing, and show the battery life remaining on the brush. It's a quick way to get feedback on your technique, and surprisingly motivating, but for more in-depth guidance you can turn to the Oral-B app, which has heat maps of your mouth to show how thorough your clean was. This is updated in real-time.

The downside of the Oral-B iO Series is that it's one of the most expensive electric toothbrushes around, though its price has dropped significantly in the months since its release and you can now pick it up far more cheaply. Additional brush heads are also pricey. If your budget can stand it, though, this is an extremely well-designed electric toothbrush that will have a real impact on how you clean your teeth, and will help set you up with better habits that can have a long-term effect on your oral health.

The best value electric toothbrush

best electric toothbrush Colgate Hum Rhythmic Sonic toothbrush

2. Colgate Hum Smart Rhythm Electric Toothbrush

The Colgate Hum Smart Rhythmic Sonic toothbrush is the cheapest brush on our guide, and a great way to pick up a smart toothbrush for less. It interfaces with the Colgate app on your phone, which can tell when the brush is turned on, and guides you through cleaning the zones of your mouth for a more effective, thorough clean.

It's not a true smart brush like the above Oral-B, as it has no sensor to detect mouth position, but it will flash if you put too much pressure on your gums and has both regular and sensitive modes. For thirty dollars, or the equivalent? It's excellent.

The brush comes with a travel case and AAA batteries. its biggest downside is the need to replace batteries, along with brush heads, every few months, which isn't particularly eco-friendly nor cost-effective in the long run. However, each replacement will last at least three months, as the brush isn't particularly power-hungry. If you're looking to travel frequently and want a spare toothbrush, or you're looking for an affordable way to start smart-cleaning, this is the brush for you.

The best premium electric toothbrush

best electric toothbrush Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige with brush head detached, next to charging case

3. Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is another impressive electric toothbrush designed to improve your technique long-term by monitoring your brushing and giving real-time feedback. If you make too much of a scrubbing action, the app will display an alert advising you to reduce your movements, and the handle will buzz gently. Press too hard, and the handle will pause, then resume with lower intensity in reaction to your technique.

The Sonicare app monitors the brush's position in your mouth, helping ensure you clean every surface thoroughly, with on-screen graphics and timers to ensure you don't miss a spot. The app is less kid-friendly than the Oral-B equivalent and won't shower you with emojis and awards for a job well done, but it will give you personalized tips, track your brushing technique and allow you to monitor it over time.

It's a seriously stylish electric toothbrush, too, with a sleek, minimalist design and chic carry case to keep it charged on the go. It's also the quietest electric toothbrush we've tested to date, emitting only a subtle hum.

The only downside is that there are no controls for adjusting modes or choosing an intensity setting on the brush itself. Instead, all the customization is done through the mobile app. That's not an issue once you've set it to your exact preferences, though; provided you don't like to switch modes on the fly, it's a superb brush.

The best electric toothbrush without an app

best electric toothbrush Ordo Sonic+ electric toothbrush on marbled surface

4. Ordo Sonic+

The Ordo Sonic+ works on the same principle as Philips Sonicare electric toothbrushes, sending rapid pulses of water between teeth to dislodge sticky plaque, but in our tests we found it delivered a more gentle clean – something helped further by its soft bristles, which help avoid damage to your gums.

This isn't a smart toothbrush – there's no Bluetooth connectivity or smartphone app – but it's very impressive for the price. Not only does it have a premium design that's just as smart as a top-end brush from the likes or Oral-B, but during our test we found it held its charge for weeks, cleaned thoroughly, and could be supplemented by great value subscription packs containing mouthwash concentrate, toothpaste, replacement heads, and dental floss.

These packs also include three packages of interdental brushes that, combined with the gentle brushing action and small head, make the Ordo Sonic+ a particularly good choice for anyone with braces. There's no need to worry about damaging wires or brackets.

Our only real complaint about the Ordo Sonic+ is that its charger has a USB connector, but no adapter for a standard shaver socket. There's no pressure sensor either, but aside from that, it's a superb option if you're looking for an entry-level electric toothbrush that doesn't skimp on features or performance.

The best mid-range electric toothbrush

best electric toothbrush Oral-B iO Series 6 with head detached in case

5. Oral-B iO Series 6

If the Oral-B iO Series 9 is a little beyond your budget, this is an excellent alternative. The Oral-B iO Series 6 is essentially the same as the top-end brush but with a lower price tag, thanks to fewer fancy accessories.

The iO Series 6 has the same near-frictionless magnetic motor as the Series 9, resulting in a quiet and effective cleaning action. The toothbrush also has the same intelligent pressure sensor, plus an accelerometer to detect its position as you brush. Install the Oral-B app on your phone, and you can get real-time feedback as you make your way around your mouth.

The main difference between the two is the travel case. While the Series 9 has a luxurious case that'll keep your brush charged while you're on the road, the Series 6 has a much more basic plastic holder. The charger is also different; rather than a stylish magnetic puck, it's a standard charger that holds the brush in place using a prong that fits into a recess in the handle. We found it easy to use and very secure, even though the case and charger don't look as good as their premium sibling.

It's not quite as chic. However, if you want a brilliant toothbrush and aren't a frequent traveler, it's one of the best options around.

Mode Electric Toothbrush in black

6. Mode Electric Toothbrush

The Mode Electric Toothbrush is simple to use and easy to navigate. A wall-mounted charger with in-built sensor-based nightlight, only one mode and no companion app, it's a back-to-basics approach to smart toothbrushes that is intuitive rather than frustratingly simple.

It looks slick with its sleek, matte black design and performs well with great battery life, over 30 days, and deep-cleaning, powerful sonic vibrations. It's not going to be the best option for users with sensitive teeth, but for people who are bored of frills, don't want an app telling them how to brush, and just want to get on with it in the morning, the Mode is the perfect "basic" toothbrush.

It would be outclassed by the others with lots of different features, if it wasn't so damn good.

The best electric toothbrush for quiet brushing

best electric toothbrush Oclean X Pro Elite electric toothbrush in travel case

7. Oclean X Pro Elite

The Oclean X Pro Elite is the quietest electric toothbrush we've tested. In fact, when you close your mouth, it's barely audible – but don't let that fool you. This is still a powerful sonic toothbrush that delivers thorough cleaning on par with much more expensive brushes.

It's well designed, too. A bright touchscreen display built into the brush handle allows you to choose from various modes and intensity settings, with a timer that counts down as you brush. It works surprisingly well with wet hands and is more intuitive than pushing a series of physical buttons.

The Oclean X Pro Elite might not come with a charging case (the simple carry case supplied with our review unit is sold separately), but at an extremely reasonable price of $99.99 / £75 / AU$141 for the handle and one head, it's hard to complain.

Unfortunately, the brush doesn't come with a charging cable or adapter for a regular shaver socket – only a USB connector – and the mobile app is excessively confusing. Whereas Philips and Oral-B have created apps that are as simple as possible, Oclean overwhelms the user with a barrage of options that should have been pared back.

The X Pro Elite is an excellent brush by itself (it really is astonishingly quiet). But, in our opinion, it's best when used without its 'smart' functionality.

Electric toothbrush FAQs

How to choose the best electric toothbrush for you.

When choosing an electric toothbrush, the most important factor to consider is its effectiveness at removing plaque. The difference is sometimes small, but the brush heads' design, the motor's power, and the type of movement (oscillating or sonic vibration) can all have an effect. The most powerful or fastest vibrating/oscillating brush isn't necessarily the best, though, particularly for people with sensitive gums. If that's you, for a brush with a 'gentle' mode, which will dial down the intensity.

It's also important to consider whether you want something that will help you improve your technique or you're confident that you're doing a thorough job. Most premium electric toothbrushes (such as the Oral-B iO Series 9 and Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige) include position sensors and Bluetooth units that detect which part of your mouth you're currently brushing and provide real-time feedback in a smartphone app. That could be extremely useful if you're concerned that you're missing spots (something that your dentist may have pointed out), but it adds to the cost.

Another factor is how frequently you travel. Most of the electric toothbrushes we've tested come with a travel case, but the higher-end brushes have cases with rechargeable batteries, so your brush doesn't run flat during long trips away. A typical electric toothbrush won't need charging more than once a week, so if you're rarely away from home longer than that, you could save money by skipping the fancy case.

Noise is another consideration that's easy to overlook and tends to correlate with price; a cheap electric toothbrush might be effective, but paying more will get you a higher-end motor that won't wake a sleeping partner in the morning.

Is a sonic or oscillating toothbrush better?

There are two different kinds of motion in most modern electric toothbrushes; sonic and oscillating.

Sonic toothbrushes are engineered to vibrate the brush filaments from side to side, and often resemble manual brushes with oval or diamond-shaped heads. These brushes are capable of vibrating up to ~40,000 per minute, depending on the model   –  meaning they move more rapidly than oscillating toothbrushes. Powerful vibrations force toothpaste and fluid between the teeth, granting a more comprehensive clean.

Oscillating toothbrushes feature rotating and pulsating round brush heads  that can rotate up to ~8,000 times per minute, depending on the model. While they're slower in this department, oscillating toothbrushes benefit from the rotating head, which is fantastic for fighting plaque.

As of writing, no clinical evidence suggests either type of toothbrush is definitively better for your dental hygiene. Oscillating toothbrushes do tend to cost more than simple sonic brushes, but many tend to be packed with features.

We test each electric toothbrush by using it twice a day for two weeks, brushing for two minutes morning and night, then using a disclosing tablet at the end of weeks one and two. Disclosing tablets help to reveal how much plaque remains on our teeth after our final brushing session by coating your teeth with a harmless dye. If the toothbrush has a smartphone app, then we use that to guide our brushing.

We compare the results against a benchmark set by using a disclosing tablet after cleaning with a manual toothbrush for two weeks.

10 travel toothbrushes that will help maintain great oral hygiene on your next trip

Y ou may be busy packing your bags for your next trip and daydreaming about oceanfront cocktails and catnaps in the sun. But your commitment to oral hygiene shouldn’t go on vacation just because you’re leaving home.

Thankfully, there are dozens of top-tier travel toothbrushes and toothbrush travel cases that will make maintaining your dental care on the go easier than ever. Before we dive into which are our favorites, let’s take a look at what you should look for in the ideal toothbrush for traveling.

What to look for in a travel toothbrush

Portability and size should play a major role in deciding what toothbrush is right for you. If you tend to throw a full-size travel cosmetic bag into your checked luggage , you can opt for a full-size toothbrush. But, if you pride yourself on just bringing a carry-on backpack with you when you travel, it might be better to go petite.

Foldable design

Speaking of petite, the ever-popular folding travel toothbrush is a fan favorite for a reason. The hinged design takes up half the space of a regular-size toothbrush without sacrificing ease of use when fully extended.

Manual vs. electric

If you already have an electric toothbrush at home , you might feel like a manual toothbrush just for travel feels like a downgrade. While electric toothbrushes are scientifically proven to better prevent tooth decay, if you’re planning a long-haul adventure, it might be more reliable to go with something that doesn’t require batteries or regular charging.

Dual voltage

That said, if you do opt for an electric toothbrush, it might be worth looking into one that offers dual voltage. With this functionality, you won’t need to tie down a travel adapter or risk burning out your toothbrush when charging it abroad.

Antimicrobial

Shopping for a toothbrush with antimicrobial properties is key, especially if you tend to throw your toothbrush into the depths of your bag when commuting. Antimicrobial bristles hinder bacterial growth between uses, ensuring your mouth stays as healthy as possible.

Britsle type

Toothbrush bristles are available in soft, medium and hard varieties. Most people prefer a medium bristle variety, but if you tend to brush hard you might want to opt for a softer bristle to help protect your gums and enamel. Pay attention to the bristle type when picking out a new travel toothbrush.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite dentist-approved travel toothbrushes on the market right now that’ll make maintaining your oral hygiene on the go easy and stress-free.

From antimicrobial designs that’ll keep your mouth feeling fresh and clean to battery-powered devices designed for next-level cleaning and care, here’s exactly where you’ll want to be looking if you’re hoping to upgrade your travel toothbrush.

Best Electric Toothbrushes of 2024

The best electric toothbrushes give manual options a run for their money. In fact, according to New York City-based dentist Michael Wei, DDS , using an electric toothbrush is much more effective than a regular toothbrush. “The electric toothbrush’s rotating bristles will clean your teeth better and are able to get in tight spaces that a manual one would not be able to,” he says.

Electric toothbrushes are also easier to use, and many people find them more enjoyable, too. To help you narrow down the options, we talked to three dental experts and used those insights to make recommendations for the best electric toothbrushes based on your specific needs.

Reasonably priced for the features it includes

Doesn’t include extra brush heads

Only comes in two colors

Oral B is one of the most highly regarded names in dentistry, and biomimetic dentist Lauren Becker, DDS , says they make some of the best electric toothbrushes on the market. The brand has several lines of electric toothbrushes, but the Oral B Pro 1000 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush earned the spot of best overall because of its combination of features and value.

This toothbrush retails for $49.99, which is one of the lowest-priced models in Oral B’s lineup, but it’s packed with expert-recommended features that can help you brush better.

This is an oscillating toothbrush, which means it rotates and spins to remove plaque and clean teeth. It has three cleaning modes – Daily Clean, Whitening, and Sensitive – plus a pressure sensor that stops the oscillation if you push too hard. There's also a two-minute timer that helps you brush for the recommended duration of time and a 30-second pulsating timer that alerts you when it’s time to switch quadrants.

This option includes the brush only, but the Oral B Pro 1000 is compatible with most of the brand’s brush heads (except ones in the iO series), so you can buy whichever replacement heads you prefer. This model is rechargeable and comes with a corded charging base.

Quip Adult Electric Toothbrush  »

Quip Adult Electric Toothbrush

Less expensive than other electric toothbrushes

Option for a subscription for brush head refills

Comes with mount/cover

Only one cleaning mode

No pressure sensor

The Quip Adult Electric Toothbrush is a budget-friendly model that costs $30.This is a sonic toothbrush, which means it uses vibration to clean your teeth. According to Alexander Vaiman, DDS , of New York Family Dental Arts, sonic toothbrushes work faster than oscillating toothbrushes (though they may be slightly less effective at plaque removal).

There’s one mode, and the toothbrush has a three-month battery life – it operates on a AAA battery instead of a rechargeable one. This means you don’t have to store it on a corded base. Instead, it comes with a brush holder that you can use to conveniently mount it to your mirror. This holder also doubles as a cover for travel.

It’s also somewhat customizable. You can choose between plastic and metal handles – the metal will cost you about $15 more – in eight colors. This gives it a more elevated look that can blend in with your bathroom aesthetic more than some of the other options on our list.

There are no brush refills included with your initial purchase, but you can sign up for a subscription to get one, two, or three new brush heads shipped to you every three months.

Mode Electric Toothbrush  »

Mode Electric Toothbrush

Lasts 30 days on a single charge

Wireless charging dock

Lifetime warranty with subscription

No advanced features

Mode’s wireless charging dock makes it an excellent option for travel and for keeping your counters clear. Instead of a bulky, corded charging base, Mode has a magnetic, wireless charging dock that lies flush against your outlet. This component features a built-in nightlight and can rotate to make room for other plug-in accessories, whether it be a phone charger or a hair dryer. The electric toothbrush also comes with a brush head cover so you can keep it protected and sanitary when you’re on the road.

It doesn’t have advanced features, but there is one oscillating cleaning mode and soft, tapered bristles that are designed to get between the teeth. The battery is rechargeable, and the brush can last up to 30 days on a single charge, so you might not even have to worry about bringing the charger on shorter trips.

There are two color options to choose from – all white and all black – and the base is made of sleek, waterproof aluminum. While this toothbrush doesn’t come with extra brush heads, you can sign up for a recurring subscription to get refills delivered to you every three months. As long as you have an active subscription, you’ll be covered by a lifetime warranty. If your subscription lapses, the warranty drops to one year from the date of purchase.

hum Kids Smart Battery Powered Toothbrush  »

hum Kids Smart Battery Powered Toothbrush

Compatible app to encourage proper brushing

Two-minute timer

Smaller handles and brush head to accommodate kids

No integrated pressure sensor

Not rechargeable

Getting kids to brush their teeth can be a struggle; getting them to brush for the recommended two minutes can be even harder. Hum tried to solve this problem by making brushing a little more fun with their Kids Smart Battery Powered Toothbrush.

This toothbrush connects to an app that uses augmented reality to track brushing progress via live games and it teaches kids where and how to brush effectively. (Note: You’ll need a phone or tablet to connect to this app.) As your child brushes, they’ll unlock new levels and experiences through the app that encourage them to keep up with proper hygiene techniques. You’ll also get a two-minute timer through the app.

Outside of its smart capabilities, this electric toothbrush has a softer vibration for kids, an ergonomic grip designed for smaller hands, and a smaller brush head.

This toothbrush isn’t rechargeable, but the starter kit includes the toothbrush, a connector for the augmented reality feature, a holder for your phone so your child can easily follow along with the app, one replacement brush head, and two AAA batteries. If you choose to sign up for the subscription option, you’ll get a two-pack of brush heads sent to you at the frequency you select (for instance, every three months).

Oral B iO Series 10 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush  »

Oral B iO Series 10 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

Seven cleaning modes, including Super Sensitive

Built-in pressure sensor

Connects to app for brush habit tracking

Some say the app could be confusing

The Oral B iO Series 10 is one of the most advanced electric toothbrushes on the market. For starters, it’s fully Bluetooth-compatible and connects to the brand’s app to track your brushing habits and make any recommendations for improvement. But, if you prefer to use your device app-free, you have that option, too.

The smart charger helps monitor your pressure, brushing time, and coverage area in real-time. There’s a pressure sensor on the toothbrush itself that shows a red light when you’re brushing too hard, or a green light when you’re using the right pressure. This makes it easy to adjust while you’re looking in the mirror as you brush.

Additionally, there’s an interactive color display that shows the current setting; there are seven total, including Daily Clean, Intense, Whiten, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Gum Care, and Tongue Clean. The display also shows brushing time (there’s a two-minute timer) and charging progress, and provides alerts for when it’s time to change your brush head.

The charger itself is corded, but the brush has a magnetic base that forms a solid connection, ensuring that it reaches a full charge in three hours.

The iO series 10 does have a higher price to match how feature-rich it is, but it comes with some extras too. The box includes four total brush head replacements and a charging travel case in addition to the regular charger and the toothbrush.

Philips Sonicare 900 Series Power Toothbrush  »

Philips Sonicare 900 Series Power Toothbrush

Pressure sensor

Three intensities for daily cleaning mode

Comes with travel case

Doesn’t come with sensitive brush heads

For those with sensitive teeth, Dr. Wei recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush with multiple speeds and settings that allow you to adjust the intensity. The Philips Sonicare 9000 Series Power Toothbrush fits the bill.

This toothbrush comes with four modes: clean, white+ (to help remove surface stains), gum health, and deep clean+. The clean mode is the regular daily cleaning setting, and you can set it to three intensities, low, medium, and high, depending on how sensitive your teeth are.

There’s a pressure sensor that alerts you when you’re brushing too hard – a nice option for those who may not feel the sensitivity right away, but get sore after applying too much pressure – and a two-minute timer that provides feedback by vibrating the handle when it’s time to switch quadrants and stop brushing.

This is a smart brush so there’s an option to connect it to a compatible app that tracks your brushing habits and provides reports to see how much you’ve improved over time.

This brush comes with one standard brush head, which may not be the best option for sensitive teeth, but if you want softer bristles, you can purchase sensitive brush heads that are 25% softer.

The Bottom Line

Electric toothbrushes are better than manual ones, according to experts, and the best one for you really depends on your needs. We recommend the highly rated Oral B Pro 1000 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush for most people because it offers plenty of handy features for a reasonable price. However, we also covered other electric toothbrushes that can fit different needs – whether you want a smart electric toothbrush that tracks your brushing habits and alerts you to pressure changes in real-time, a compact model that you can bring with you on your travels, an electric toothbrush that’s designed with kids in mind, or one that’s gentle enough for those with sensitive teeth.

Things To Consider When Buying Electric Toothbrushes

Sonic vs. Oscillating: There are two main types of electric toothbrushes: sonic and oscillating. Sonic toothbrushes use a vibrating motion to clean teeth while oscillating electric toothbrushes use a side-to-side motion. According to Dr. Wei, both types are effective, so the choice between them ultimately comes down to personal preference.

He says that sonic toothbrushes tend to be quieter and require less pressure when brushing. These can be a good option for those with sensitive gums or teeth. Sonic toothbrushes are faster, according to Dr. Vaiman, so they can clean teeth in less time, which is appealing for busier individuals.

On the flip side, oscillating toothbrushes aren’t as gentle, but they tend to be more effective at removing plaque.

Dr. Wei recommends trying out both types to determine which is more comfortable and effective for your individual needs.

Special Features: Electric toothbrushes run the gamut, from very basic models to higher-priced options with lots of advanced features. This partly comes down to personal preferences, but experts recommend buying an electric toothbrush with at least some of the following features:

  • Two-minute Timer: Research shows that the average person brushes their teeth for about 45 seconds, but most professionals recommend at least two minutes (twice per day) for best results. A two-minute timer can help ensure you brush your teeth for the recommended two minutes per session.
  • Pressure Sensors: Dr. Wei recommends pressure sensors that can alert you when you’re brushing too hard so you can adjust your brushing technique.
  • Interchangeable Heads: Some days, your teeth may be more sensitive than others. Dr. Wei says many electric toothbrushes offer interchangeable heads so you can swap out the bristles for a more gentle brushing experience or one that’s better suited for your teeth.
  • Waterproof Design: “Look for a toothbrush that’s waterproof so you can use it in the shower or bath without any worry of damaging it,” says Dr. Wei.
  • Different Brush Modes: Dr. Vaiman recommends looking for an electric toothbrush with different brushing modes, like sensitivity, teeth whitening, and/or gum massage.
  • Replacement Reminder: Dr. Vaiman says that most people don’t replace their brush heads often enough, so a digital prompt that reminds you when it’s time to swap it out can be an important feature.

Extra Accessories: Extra accessories are just a perk, but you might want to consider them when shopping for an electric toothbrush. Some brushes include just the handle and one brush head, but you have to buy any additional accessories separately.

Some models come with several accessories like extra brush heads, a charging travel case, or a smart charger. Granted, the price for these electric toothbrushes tends to be considerably higher than models without these perks.

In most cases, you can purchase any accessories you want through the company’s website or on third-party sites like Amazon; you’ll just have to consider the overall cost of buying them in one package versus buying what you want separately.

On a related note, many companies offer subscriptions for brush head replacements that can help you save some money. So, even if the brush doesn’t come with these extras, you can still save over time by subscribing.

Battery Life and Charging Options: Typically, you’ll have two battery options: a rechargeable battery or replaceable batteries. Dr. Wei recommends a rechargeable battery so you don’t have to worry about running out of power, but this mostly comes down to personal preference.

Most rechargeable electric toothbrushes last anywhere from two weeks to 30 days, depending on how you use them. However, some that require replacement batteries can last up to 30 days with one set of batteries.

Electric toothbrushes have different charging options available. Most have a corded charging base, but others are cordless so you don’t have to worry about wires hanging around your sink. These cordless options can be desirable for those with limited counter space.

How We Chose  the Best Electric Toothbrushes

Oral care is extremely important, not just for your teeth and gums, but for your overall health, too. Because of this, we don’t take these recommendations lightly. To put together this list of the best electric toothbrushes, we consulted with three dental professionals: New York City-based dentist Michael Wei, DDS , biomimetic dentist Lauren Becker, DDS , and Alexander Vaiman, DDS , a dentist from New York Family Dental Arts.

We asked them questions about the different types of electric toothbrushes and how to choose between them. We also asked about recommended features. We then used their answers to narrow down the choices through extensive research, considering features, prices, extra accessories, and battery life. Overall, we found that it doesn’t matter whether you get an oscillating or a sonic electric toothbrush, as long as you’re using it for the recommended two minutes per session, twice a day.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

At 360 Reviews, our contributors and editors have years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products. Lindsay Boyers , the author of this piece, has almost five years of product reviewing experience with a heavy focus on health-related products. Boyers has written for several health-focused publications, including Healthline, mindbodygreen, Livestrong, and Verywell Health. In addition to leaning on her own experience, Boyers consulted with three dental experts to write this piece. She, and one of the experts, both use an Oral B iO Series electric toothbrush every day.

In a word: yes. Electric toothbrushes are more efficient at removing plaque than manual toothbrushes, and the brush head motion dislodges plaque better than a manual toothbrush, according to Dr. Becker. Similarly, Dr. Vaiman shares that it’s impossible to replicate the motion of an electric toothbrush with a manual brush, and electric brushes are able to get into tighter spaces.

Generally, you should expect to replace the brush head on your electric toothbrush every three to four months. “Leaving the toothbrush on for too long will lead to the bristles becoming worn out and less effective at cleaning your teeth,” says Dr. Vaiman. You should also replace the toothbrush head if you’re sick to avoid any lingering germs or bacteria, according to Dr. Becker.

Dr. Vaiman recommends storing your electric toothbrush on a counter as far away from the toilet as possible, or in a ventilated cabinet leaving the toothbrush in an upright position.

Dr. Wei adds that it’s important to keep it away from water and other electrical appliances or cords, and never leave it plugged in unless it’s charging.

According to Dr. Wei, a soft-bristled electric toothbrush is best for those with sensitive teeth or gums, but there are additional factors to consider. “Look for a brush with multiple speeds and settings, so you can adjust the intensity of the brushing. Some electric toothbrushes also come with special features, such as timers and pressure sensors, which can help ensure that you don't over brush or brush too hard,” he says.

Dr. Vaiman personally uses the Oral B iO 9 series and says he really likes it. We recommend the newer version of this electric toothbrush, the Oral B iO 10, as the best electric toothbrush for sensitive teeth.
