Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have postponed all their September tour dates due to illness, including Thursday night’s concert at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Springsteen, 73, is being treated for symptoms of peptic ulcer disease and the decision of his medical advisors is that he should postpone the remainder of his September shows, a Live Nation representative said.

The announcement came Wednesday night, just 24 hours before he was scheduled to perform in front of more than 30,000 people at the former Carrier Dome on the Syracuse University campus. A total of eight concerts, including a Sept. 19 performance at MVP Arena in Albany, were canceled but are expected to be rescheduled.

“Over here on E Street, we’re heartbroken to have to postpone these shows,” The Boss said in a statement. “First, apologies to our fabulous Philly fans who we missed a few weeks ago. We’ll be back to pick these shows up and then some. Thank you for your understanding and support. We’ve been having a blast at our US shows and we’re looking forward to more great times. We’ll be back soon. Love and God bless all, Bruce.”

Springsteen had postponed some earlier 2023 tour dates, including an Albany concert originally scheduled in March and two August dates at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, due to Covid and other health issues. Last week, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that the Philly concerts were rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024, and Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.

Tickets purchased for the original concert dates will be honored for the new dates, which have not yet been announced for Syracuse, Albany and other postponed September concerts.

How to get ticket refunds

According to a Ticketmaster message to ticketholders, refunds are not currently being offered for Bruce Springsteen’s Syracuse, Albany, and other postponed September concerts because they have not yet been rescheduled. If a concert date is canceled altogether, refunds will be issued automatically.

“Event Organizers are constantly assessing the situation and making determinations regarding refunds. You can always check your Ticketmaster Account later, as this status may change. Just go to your order to see if a refund link appears, which would indicate that the Event Organizer has made your order eligible for a refund,” Ticketmaster said in an email.

However, refunds are being offered for the Philadelphia concerts because new dates have now been announced. According to the Phillies website, to be eligible for refunds you must have purchased your tickets through the MLB team’s website and not transferred, posted or sold them. If the tickets were transferred to you, you will need to transfer them back to the original purchase in order to request a refund.

Refunds must be requested within 30 days of the new date announcement, and will be processed to the original method of payment.

For tickets purchased through a secondary site, customers must contact the site or original purchaser for possible refunds.

If ticketholders made travel arrangements, including flights, hotels and other reservations, they will have to contact them in order to find out if any refunds are offered.

Bruce Springsteen Fans To Get Ticketmaster Refund

Thousands of Bruce Springsteen fans will receive refunds for what the U.S. Federal Trade Commission called deceptive sales practices by TicketsNow, a ticket reselling unit of Ticketmaster , the FTC said on Thursday.

The FTC said Ticketmaster, which is now part of Live Nation Entertainment Inc, will repay fans “upward of a million dollars” in refunds after it used “deceptive bait-and-switch tactics” to sell tickets at 14 Springsteen concerts last year.

Live Nation Can't Dismiss Shareholder Lawsuit Over 'False and Misleading' Earnings Reports…

The FTC was inundated with complaints last year when people trying to buy Springsteen tickets from Ticketmaster were redirected to TicketsNow, at prices that were as much as three or four times face value.

FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz told reporters on a conference call that the investigation into the practices of the ticket reselling due to the Springsteen complaints had uncovered “pretty shocking” practices.

Trending on Billboard

One such practice was that TicketsNow sold “phantom tickets” without telling the consumers they did not actually have the tickets, but were hoping to get them.

The FTC said TicketsNow was also not fully refunding fans for the premium-priced tickets it could not deliver. In connection with the settlement, the FTC sent letters to all major ticket resellers on Thursday demanding better transparency in dealing with fans.

“Clearly consumers deserve better,” said Leibowitz in a statement. “They deserve to know what they’re buying, including the risk that their tickets won’t materialize.”

The Springsteen uproar erupted last February, just days before Ticketmaster announced its plans to merge with Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter.

Ticket reselling was criticized by Springsteen, politicians such as Representative Bill Pascrell of New Jersey and legions of music fans commenting in Internet chat rooms.

The public relations black eye threatened to undermine the Ticketmaster/Live Nation merger, which was eventually approved in January, 11 months later.

“The FTC did exactly what the U.S. Department of Justice failed to do in its approval of the Ticketmaster-Live Nation merger — put the rights of American consumers first,” said Rep. Pascrell in a statement.

The FTC’s Leibowitz said Ticketmaster has not admitted to any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

Live Nation Entertainment issued a statement saying it is now ready to “move forward” after the settlement.

“We are gratified that the FTC found that Ticketmaster did not engage in any inappropriate transfer or diversion of tickets to TicketsNow or any other resale entity,” Live Nation said.

The Bruce Springsteen Philadelphia concert will be rescheduled; refunds available soon

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

It's been a week since Bruce Springsteen broke fans' hearts, after announcing he had to reschedule two shows at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia , due to an illness.

Those performances with the E Street Band were originally for Aug. 16 and Aug. 18.

But there's light at the end of the rescheduling tunnel since ticket holders should learn soon about the new dates, according to a statement from Phillies spokesperson Deb Rinaldi.

The Boss’ band members previously have missed shows due to COVID-19 on the tour, with Columbus, Ohio, and Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut shows postponed due to illness.

Philly area fans will have some options once new Citizen Bank Park dates are announced — whether to use their tickets for newly scheduled dates or to seek a refund.

"Once the new dates are announced, and ticketholders choose to go the refund route, we will have information then available on Phillies.com/Springsteen , giving ticketholders a 30-day window to request a refund (once dates are announced/site is live)," the statement said.

In addition, the Phillies said fans who purchased tickets through a secondary outlet would need to go back to where they purchased their tickets to get a refund, dependent upon each ticketing company's policy.

Tickets bought from secondary sites will be accepted for the rescheduled date.

What's wrong with Bruce? Bruce Springsteen's concert stops in Philadelphia postponed because of illness

Per the statement, "All tickets from the postponed concerts will be good for the new (soon-to-be-announced) dates."

Springsteen fans can get the latest updates about their rescheduled tickets for the Philly shows at Phillies.com/Springsteen .

The band has not released details about the nature of Springsteen's illness at presstime.

The Boss and his band are scheduled to perform Thursday, Aug. 24, and Saturday, Aug. 26, in Foxborough, Massachusetts; and Springsteen and the E Street Band return home Wednesday, Aug. 30, for three dates at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. For all tour dates, visit the band's official website at brucespringsteen.net/tour.

Bruce Springsteen’s Tour Resumption Is Its Own Kind of Promised Land: Concert Review

An early tour stop in San Diego, on the way to his rescheduled L.A. dates in April, shows that for Springsteen, singing about the souls of the departed and throwing a party for the living are easily balanced twin tasks.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 25: Bruce Springsteen (R) and Max Weinberg of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band perform on stage at Pechanga Arena on March 25, 2024 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Daniel Knighton/Getty Images)

Most of the really essential rituals of American life — religious observances; Halloween and New Year’s Eve; opening day in baseball — are cyclical, endlessly repeatable experiences, independent from individuals or cults of personality. But to that list, a lot of us would add the ritual, stretching past 50 years now, of Bruce Springsteen in concert. And as the world found out last year, that guy can take a sick day. So, as if Springsteen tours weren’t already irregular enough, the fresh resumption of this U.S. tour, after a six-month timeout, has an extra resonance.

At San Diego’s Pechanga Arena Monday night, Springsteen and the E Street Band were three gigs into a restart of the tour that was so rudely interrupted by his peptic ulcer last September, after an opening (or reopening) night March 19 in Phoenix, followed by a show in Las Vegas March 22. Some of these audiences have felt the paucity of Springsteen concerts in the past, not future uncertainty. Springsteen hadn’t played Vegas since 2002 when he finally returned last week. In San Diego, the gap had been mysteriously far longer: He had last been in the city to do a show with the E Street Band in 1981, and last performed in San Diego in any capacity — as a solo artist — in ’96.

Springsteen didn’t directly bring up his illness or the postponement of the last leg of the tour when he talked to the audience at the Pechanga Arena, but he did address the absence that’d been on so many local fans’ minds over the last four decades.

Why hadn’t he gotten back to San Diego sooner? Maybe because he felt it’d be too on-the-nose, having name-checked the city so famously in “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)”? Naturally, when that nearly eight-minute rouser did come up as an encore number Sunday, it got some special treatment for the occasion. Standing on the ramp that extended into the GA section with members of his band, Springsteen halted the song for a 21-second pause following the line “I know a pretty little place in Southern California, down San Diego way,” which, as a prompt for 13,500 people to go wild, probably could been extended a couple of minutes longer.

It’s a little bit surprising that Springsteen had not been back sooner just in that his last SD gig back in 1981 had also been at this same facility, then known as the San Diego Sports Arena. And the place maintains just a little bit of the old-school feel of his former favorite locale further north, the L.A. Sports Arena, which he had dubbed “The Dump That Jumps” before closing it down with a series of final concerts there in 2016. Speaking of things that will all seem funny, it may seem odd to point out the artist’s nostalgia for something as unsentimental as arenas, but he will tend to play the older of those venues when he’s coming to a city with more than one, as he did in San Diego and will when he shortly hits Inglewood’s Forum (his distaste for Staples/Crypto.com Arena being legendary). He’s got a thing for things that have escaped the wrecking ball; the Pechanga Arena has been upgraded above dump status, but on a night like this, it did jump, too.

The faithful haven’t been sure whether to call his 2024 tour (which has a lot of rescheduled North American shows bookending a long summer trip to Europe) a continuation of the aborted 2023 U.S. tour, or something that counts as a new one. It does affect how songs are counted or not counted as “tour premieres” in the inevitable collation of setlists — which really boils it down to an especially first-world problem. The artist himself had a point of view on that when asked about it on the E Street Radio satelite channel earlier this month, saying, “There will be some things from last year’s tour that will hold over; some of my basic themes of mortality and life and those things, you know, I’m going to keep set… (But) I think I’m gonna move around the other parts of the set a lot more, so there’ll be a much wider song selection going on. So we’re looking at it like it’s a little bit of the old tour, but we’re looking at it like a new tour.”

Looking at what’s gone from last year, “Kitty’s Back” is no longer back, and “Glory Days” and “Out in the Street” are also out, along with semi-regular staples like “The E Street Shuffle,” “Candy’s Room” and “Johnny 99.” But since the show still clocks in at a very healthy 27 songs, spread out over about two hours and 40 minutes, additions are in place, like his 1973 debut album’s “Spirit in the Night,” which has been played at all three shows so far, after only getting two plays total in all of 2022. His cover of the Ben E. King/Aretha Franklin classic “Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)” (as heard on his soul covers abum two years ago) also looks like it may be a nighty regular now, after having been bumped out of the set after a handful of appearances in February 2022. The change-ups distinct to San Diego in the fresh run of shows included his first performance of “My City of Ruins” since 2017, plus the revival of his “Detroit Medley,” which was performed only three times last year. “Death to My Hometown” and, in the encore, “Bobby Jean” also made what have recently counted as rare appearances.

What remains rock-solid from last year are the vast majority of songs a casual fan might be coming to hear, mostly from the 1973-84 era, although service is also paid to the “Rising” and “Wrecking Ball” albums and the two most recent releases that he is ostensibly touring behind, “Letter to You” and “Only the Strong Survive.” Songs that would be set-closers for anyone else are thrown in almost in random spots, until it becomes a sheer onslaught of classics. Rest assured that the show’s final stretch will allow everyone to resume ongoing internal debate over whether “Born to Run” is the quintessential rock song of all time, or whether that honor is rightly reserved by “Thunder Road.” (Team “Thunder,” here, after 49 years of consideration.)

It counts as a thunderously upbeat best-of show, in other words. But it’s an exhilarating greatest-hits show sandwiched within momentarily sobering ruminatings about death, and death’s effect on the living. Which is quite a hoagie.

Also still a staple of the show from last year is another one of those recent songs about remembering missing loved ones, “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” as a final benediction after the celebratory encore material.

On top of this, Springsteen has made some other additions to the show, whether for the entirety of the remaining tour or as recurring one-offs, that further reinforce this theme. For instance, the show no longer begins every night with “No Surrender” (which is still in the set, pushed back a bit); he’s replaced it with the brooding “Lonesome Day,” one of the 9/11-prompted songs from “The Rising.” As he thought about what kind of messaging to start these new concerts with, maybe Springsteen’s bout with illness made him realize that we all have to succumb to some surrendering now and again. More likely, it has something to do with providing an opening bookend to “I’ll See You in My Dreams” at the beginning — starting the show with an anxious response to death at the outset, so that his calming thoughts about it at the end feel like the conclusion to some kind of story.

In adding “My City of Ruins” to the set for the first time in seven years, Springsteen also used that as a bed for more of these thoughts, on top of full-band intros, extending that gospel-like ballad to 11 minutes in length — less than a third of the way into the running time. “I plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your ass hurting, your sexual organs stimulated,” Springsteen promised during the “Ruins” spoken interlude, before getting down to business about having “a story to tell. It’s a story about yesterday and about tonight and hopefully tomorrow. It’s about hellos and goodbyes. It’s about the things that leave us and the things that remain.” After introducing the extended band (E Street Horns and E Street Choir included), he asked, “Are we missing anybody?” The crowd roared with implicit Clarence Clemons/Danny Federici appreciation. “Everybody’s missing somebody at this point,” he affirmed. “I don’t know where we go when this is all over, but I know where we remain. The only thing I can guarantee tonight is, if you’re here and we’re here, then they’re here.”

Spaced out over the better part of three hours, these reflections aren’t going to hit anyone in the crowd as heavy-handed; if anything, they’re just barely enough in making the obvious point that everyone present who’s been with him for the long haul has probably been spending more time in hospital rooms or at funerals than revving up hemi-powered drones. Fortunately, there’s a timelessness to most of the classics that transcends youth, even if some of the aspirational dreams in the early material are long since in rear-view mirrors for much of the audience. “Let the broken hearts stand as the price you’ve gotta pay”: some things can sung along with at 18 or 88.

The stage for this tour is almost hilariously basic, if you’ve been to any major superstar outings lately, and witnessed the bizarre shapes of the ramps that extend into SRO floors and practically twist around each other. Springsteen’s ramp doesn’t look to extend much more more than 15 feet into the audience, as if to dare the incoming audience to imagine how much he can do with just a minimum of thrust staging. (Honestly, we’re trying to keep this as clean as we can here.) He spent plenty of time on that modest extension, which allows plenty of room for camera angles catching the surrounding crowd, and for occasional visits from mobile band members and backup singers, without having to go so far out into the crowd that it looks like he’s, you know, overcompensating.

As is tradition, he and some of his traveling accompanists occasionally visited the rear riser, which now holds a five-man horn section, to provide eye candy for the audience watching from behind the stage. Everyone turning around to give the folks in the so-called cheap seats a thrill is especially nice when it’s timed to one of his great key changes, as it was in the instrumental bridge of the Pogues-like “Death to My Hometown.”

Memorable moments stand out almost randomly: Nils Lofgren going crazy on “Because the Night,” making up for the lack of solo time he gets as one of three guitarists by doing a whole night’s worth of shredding in one tune… Saxophonist Jake Clemons leaning on Springsteen’s shoulder during “Prove It All Night,” in what has to be a subtle but intentional inverse of his late uncle Clarence’s famous “Born to Run” cover pose… A moment when backup vocalist Curtis King joins Springsteen on the ramp during “Nightshift” for a few modest steps in unison. (Guaranteed, the only actual dance choreography of the night.)… Springsteen taking a sign from the audience and saving it for much later so that he could dedicate “Last Man Standing” to a specific fallen serviceman.

Meanwhile, here’s an advisory for anyone coming to the tour down the road: plan for traffic and invest in a watch. The tickets say 7:30 p.m., and so far on this leg, that is exactly the minute the band walks on stage. The ultra-prompt start allows Springsteen and company to prove it for what still feels like all night, yet get everyone home before the witching hour. It’s true: a benevolent boss is always looking out for everyone’s health.

Bruce Springsteen concerts postponed: How to get a refund on tickets

Postponed Bruce Springsteen tour dates include:

  • Sept. 7 - Syracuse, NY @ JMA Wireless Dome
  • Sept. 9 - Baltimore, MD @ Oriole Park at Camden Yards
  • Sept. 12 - Pittsburgh, PA @ PPG Paints Arena
  • Sept. 14 - Pittsburgh, PA @ PPG Paints Arena
  • Sept. 16 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena
  • Sept. 19 - Albany, NY @ MVP Arena
  • Sept. 21 - Columbus, OH @ Nationwide Arena

Philly Springsteen Fans: Ticket Refunds Coming; Shows Unlikely to Be Rescheduled This Year

If you were hoping to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in Philadelphia this year, we've got good news and bad news.

The bad news? It’s now increasingly likely that the postponed shows, which were scheduled for last week at Citizen’s Bank Park, will not take place in 2023.

The good news? You'll soon be able to get a refund if you purchased tickets directly from the Philadelphia Phillies if you'd rather not wait for the shows.

Refunds Are Coming for Philly Ticket Holders to See Bruce Springsteen

The refunds will be available when the rescheduled dates are announced. Phillies officials say they hope the new dates very soon.

When the new concert date(s) are announced fans will have a 30-day window to request a refund on the Phillies concert page which can be found at phillies.com/springsteen .

If you want to wait for the shows? That's fine too. Just keep your tickets.

"All tickets from the postponed concerts will be good for the new (soon-to-be-announced) dates,"  Phillies spokesperson Deb Rinaldi told 94.5 PST in an email on Wednesday.

Consider yourself warned, however, if you bought tickets from a third-party retailer (like StubHub or SeatGeek), you’ll be at the mercy of their refund policies.

As you may recall, Springsteen’s shows at Citizens Bank Park were abruptly canceled last week when the 73-year-old performer fell ill just hours before he was scheduled to hit the stage on Wednesday (August 17).

The announcement came just as the parking lots were opening for Wednesday's (August 17) show . The postponement also impacted their scheduled concert on Friday, August 19.

Given the Philadelphia Phillies schedule for the remainder of the season and the intensities of a concert production schedule, it’s very unlikely that The Boss and his band will return to the ballpark in 2023. They have A LOT of home games left on the calendar.

So we’re expecting any rescheduled date(s) to likely take place in 2024 in Philadelphia.

Bruce Springsteen Tour to Resume This Weekend

Bruce is scheduled to resume his tour with the E Street Band on Thursday (August 24) in Foxboro, Mass. T hey’re scheduled to perform again on Saturday as well.

The tour will head to New Jersey and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for three shows over the upcoming Labor Day Weekend (August 30, September 1, and September 3).

As for Philadelphia, the only major remaining concert on the calendar for Citizens Bank Park is scheduled to be P!nk’s Summer Carnival concert .

The Doylestown, Pa. native will joined by special guests Brandi Carlile, Grouplove, and KidCutUp for two shows on September 18 and September 19. Click here to check out more.

We'll keep you updated as we hear more.

The Boss is back: Bruce Springsteen launches 2024 tour with a joyous Phoenix concert

bruce springsteen tour ticket refund

When Rolling Stone invited readers to vote for the greatest live acts of all time in 2011, it’s doubtful the results came as a huge surprise to anyone.

Not only did Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band win the popular vote, they did it without “a close second anywhere in sight."

And that’s because their concerts were — and are , as they reminded us as Springsteen relaunched his postponed world tour on Tuesday, March 19, at Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix — the stuff of legends.

Springsteen and The E Street Band stretch the boundaries of what it means to prove it all night while chasing moments of transcendence that can range from deeply moving to profoundly silly.

Bruce Springsteen setlist 2024: Every song he sang at Phoenix tour relaunch

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band relaunched their tour in Phoenix

The last time Springsteen brought the E Street Band to Phoenix , on a tour in 2016 re-exploring “The River,” they turned in a 3½-hour concert whose truly awe-inspiring six-song encore ended in a spirited revival of the Isley Brothers’ “Shout.”

The fans who flocked to Footprint Center on Tuesday night were on a pilgrimage to see the relaunch of the E Street Band’s first tour since then — a tour cut short in 2023 as Springsteen was treated for peptic ulcer disease, a potentially serious gastrointestinal condition.

Springsteen turned 74 in late September 2023. Four days later, he broke the news that he’d been forced to postpone all remaining concerts booked for 2023 “out of an abundance of caution.”

Naturally, I went into the Springsteen concert on Tuesday night assuming I might feel the need to make allowances for age and health and everything those words imply, especially when used that close together.

But the Springsteen who rocked that arena in Phoenix on Tuesday didn’t need my well-intentioned qualifiers.

He 'just kind of shot through the roof': How Phoenix radio made Bruce Springsteen the Boss

Springsteen brought his A-game to the relaunch of his world tour

The man brought his A-game at the helm of an 18-member E Street Band (or 17 if you’re not counting Springsteen as a member of that band, which seems a bit ridiculous) in a breathless journey through their glory days with an energy that only seemed to flag in the course of their nearly three-hour performance when the song itself demanded it.

He’s certainly scaled back on the physicality of his performance style.

There were no bent-knee slides across the stage. No leaping to rival a young Pete Townshend. But the sense of showmanship remains, from the playful rapport of Springsteen's onstage antics with the members of the E Street Band to the charming self-awareness of his dance moves to that moment toward the end where he tore his shirt open for no apparent reason other than to entertain.

His voice has aged a bit since the first time he followed that iconic shout of “1-2-3-4” with “the highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive.” But he’s too good a singer to let that compromise the essence of his vocals, settling into a more conversational delivery on “Born to Run” that made it feel like you were hearing those same lyrics for the first time after knowing them for nearly 50 years while also sidestepping the high notes.

Springsteen and the E Street Band are on a search-and-rescue mission

My favorite Springsteen memory is the E Street Band reunion show I saw in 1999 at the Meadowlands in Jersey, where the Boss announced that they were on a “search-and-rescue mission” to regenerate, rejuvenate and otherwise rekindle the spark that is “the majesty, the mystery and the ministry of rock ‘n’ roll.”

Of course they were.

And 25 years later? Springsteen seemed as committed as ever to that search-and-rescue mission, from the time he and his bandmates made their entrance one-by-one to set the tone with “Lonesome Day,” one of three songs they played from “The Rising,” to the raucous rendition of “Twist and Shout” that brought the encore to a joyous climax, having been requested by an 18-year-old fan whose sign said this was his first Springsteen concert.

That kid obviously picked a good night to be introduced to what it means to witness Springsteen in his element, leading the E Street Band in a 29-song overview of his career.

Highlights ranged from 'Born to Run' to 'Dancing in the Dark'

The setlist made its way through countless classics, reaching back to his first album, “Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.,” for a loose-limbed “Spirit in the Night,” and touching on a number of the most beloved songs on “Born to Run” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town” as well as “No Surrender,” “Dancing in the Dark” and other crowd-pleasing highlights of “Born in the U.S.A.,” a 17-times-platinum mainstream-saturating exercise in world domination that remains his most successful album.

They also dusted off a handful of the soul and R&B songs Springsteen covered on his latest album, 2022’s “Only the Strong Survive,” and three songs from his latest album of original material, “Letter To You,” including the solo acoustic version of “I’ll See You In My Dreams” that brought the encore to a haunted finish.

But what made that concert special went beyond what songs they played.

The E Street Band remain a force of nature, despite the loss of Clarence Clemons — “the Big Man” as his joining of the band is celebrated even now in “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” — and Danny Federici, who played organ, glockenspiel and accordion from the time they put the band together in Belmar, New Jersey, until his death in 2008.

Springsteen honored their memory during “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," during which their images were flashed across the screens above the stage.

The new, expanded E Street Band was brilliant

The current edition of the E Street Band is a three-guitar army with Springsteen, the Valley's own Nils Lofgren and Steven Van Zandt taking turns in the spotlight, two great keyboard players (Roy Bittan and touring member Charles Giordano), violinist Soozie Tyrell, the stellar rhythm section of drummer Max Weinberg and bassist Garry Tallent, and 44-year-old Jake Clemons still doing an excellent job of honoring his uncle, Clarence Clemons, who died in 2011, with the swagger (and physical stature) one would need to even try to fill those shoes.

There’s a flashiness to Lofgren’s soloing that’s undeniable while Springsteen squeezes out the sparks in solos that rely more on the power of each individual note and how it’s phrased, as evidenced on “Prove It All Night,” in particular, while indulging in some low-end twang Duane Eddy would’ve envied on a fantastic “Letter to You.”

The E Street Band’s ranks are further fleshed out in their current incarnation by four backup singers, a four-man horn squad and percussionist Anthony Almonte.

It was quite the crowded stage.

Springsteen kept the banter to a minimum in Phoenix

Springsteen's legend is based in part on his conversational approach to showmanship, as evidenced by the classic monologues captured on “Live/1975–85.”

But he kept the chit-chat to a minimum for much of Tuesday’s concert.

Taking the stage in a red-and-black flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled extra high, he greeted the fans with a quick “Good evening, Arizona. 1-2-3-4” and barely said another word until he’d made it through “The Promised Land,” the 10th song of the night.

Springsteen eulogized his teenage bandmate George Theiss

His first big monologue was 14 songs deep, after “Mary’s Place,” when he introduced the poignant “Last Man Standing” with the story of George Theiss, a bandmate he met at 15.

“It was 1965,” he began.

“I was 15 years old and I had been playing guitar for about six months when one summer afternoon, I heard a knock on my door and it was George Theiss, a school friend of mine, and he was looking for a guitar player to audition for his band.”

Springsteen passed the audition in a “shotgun shack” and “embarked on the greatest adventure of my life,” he said. “I played in my first real rock ‘n’ roll band and it lasted for three years. As kids. Three years! That’s a lifetime for teenagers.”

Fast forward 50 years and a much older Springsteen is visiting Theiss on his deathbed as his former bandmate is dying of cancer.

“He only had a few days to live,” Springsteen said. “And I realized that his passing would leave me as the last living member of that first band, the Castiles.”

Springsteen spoke of 'death's final and lasting gift to us'

Death brings a certain clarity, Springsteen said. “Death’s final and lasting gift to us, the living, is you get an expanded vision of the life you can live yourself. George’s death made me realize, again, just how important it is to try and live every moment you’re here.”

And with that, the stage was set for “Last Man Standing,” a haunted highlight of his latest album of original material, “Letter to You.”

The tribute to his fallen bandmate carried over into “Backstreets,” one of several emotional highlights that ventured into existential territory.

He didn’t mention the loss of his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, who died in January at 98. But there’s no doubt that she was on his mind.

Even "Night Shift," the Commodores cover from "Only the Strong Survive," felt like it tied into the existential theme.

After bringing the show to a crowd-pleasing climax in an encore packed with some of Springsteen’s most enduring calling cards, from “Born to Run” to “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” an anthemic “Dancing in the Dark” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” Springsteen sent the other members of the E Street Band away after a joyous “Twist and Shout” to end the night with a solo acoustic rendition of “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

"I'll see you in my dreams," he sang. "We'll meet and live and laugh again. I'll see you in my dreams, yeah, around the river bend. For death is not the end and I'll see you in my dreams."

Springsteen apologized for postponing his Phoenix concert

But first, he said he was sorry he had to reschedule his world tour.

“First, I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time,” he said. “I had a mother (expletive) of a bellyache. I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

Then after making a plea on behalf of St. Mary’s Food Bank , he brought the concert to an existential close with “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” a suitably haunted reflection on the friends he lost along the way.

It was a fitting close to a concert steeped in existential musings by a legend who invited us to take that long walk on his first release with “Growin’ Up.”

More than 50 years later, Springsteen is still growin’ up, inviting us to come along. It’s a beautiful thing if you’re willing to let your guard down and experience the ride.

Bruce Springsteen returns to the stage in Phoenix after health issues postponed tour

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour

PHOENIX -- PHOENIX (AP) — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage Tuesday evening at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour.

In September Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024, citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease.

“The Boss” arrived on stage to an audience chorus of “Bruuuuce!” Wearing dark jeans and a rolled up red plaid flannel shirt, he had the energy of a man half his age. His signature “One, two, three, four” was the only thing that separated most songs, showing no signs of his illness from the previous year. Once he shouted, “Good evening, Arizona” the show was off and running.

Springsteen spoke to the crowd briefly about his illness prior to playing his final song “I’ll See You In My Dreams” solo on stage. “Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time. . . . I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

The 29-song show came in just under three hours, but “The Boss” hardly broke a sweat while showing off a strong voice, all the while dancing, tearing into guitar solos, playing the harmonica and even ripping his shirt open near the end of the show.

On stage with Springsteen was the legendary E Street Band which features drummer Max Weinberg, bassist Garry Tallent, keyboardists Roy Bittan and Charlie Giordano, guitarists Stevie Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, saxophonist Jake Clemons — nephew of original and still missed sax man Clarence Clemons who died in 2011 — guitarist and violin player Soozie Tyrell, a full horn and brass section and four backup vocalists. The only missing member of the band was Springsteen’s wife, singer and guitarist Patti Scialfa.

Springsteen performed most of the hits in his vast collection, minus “Born In The U.S.A.,” but he added covers “Nightshift” by the Commodores, “Because The Night” by Patti Smith Group, and a surprise: “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. Fans went wild for “No Surrender,” “Born To Run,” “Rosalita,” “Dancing In The Dark,” “Glory Days” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" that left the rocker grinning from ear-to-ear as he conducted fans singing along like his own chorus.

This year has been particularly challenging for Springsteen. In addition to his health issues, in January his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, a fan favorite who could frequently be seen dancing at his shows, died. She was 98.

Two days after her death, Springsteen performed at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event, which honored Jon Bon Jovi for his musical achievements and philanthropic efforts.

The 2024 edition of the tour kicked off in Phoenix and ends Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Canada. It hits 17 countries across 52 dates, including a special performance on Sept. 15 where Springsteen will headline the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

bruce springsteen tour ticket refund

Jetlag? What jetlag?

Bruce Springsteen certainly seemed no worse for wear after making two quick cross-country flights over the last few days before playing what turned out to be a dynamite show at Chase Center in San Francisco on Thursday.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed Monday in San Diego then zoomed back East to make a guest appearance (with fellow troubadour Maggie Rogers) at a show by country star Zach Bryan at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

Then it was right back to the West Coast in time to play the first of two sold-out shows at the home of the Golden State Warriors.

The next gig is on Sunday, which gives Springsteen time to — oh, I don’t know — perhaps fly to Kauai for fish tacos before returning to Chase for Night 2.

And if he does decide to do just that, well, you can rest assured that he’ll still deliver the goods for Bay Area fans on Easter Sunday.

That’s why he’s The Boss.

The 74-year-old Springsteen was in nothing short of legendary form as he led his mighty E Street Band through a 29-song show that absolutely captivated the approximately 16,500 fans in attendance for three hours.

He’d draw from a wide selection of his songbook, touching upon 11 of his studio albums. There were a few debuts for this 2024 tour — which, granted, is only a few dates old at this point — as well as the favorites fans can pretty much expect to hear at every Springsteen show these days.

Backed by 17 people onstage — including a versatile horn section and excellent backing vocalists — the bandleader opened the show right around 7:45 p.m. with “Something in the Night,” one of five songs that he’d pull from the classic 1978 platter “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

The song — which was being played live for the first time on this tour — proved to be a bit of a mellow starter, but things would quickly heat up as The Boss turned to 2002’s “The Rising” for a powerful version of “Lonesome Day.”

The next two offerings, “Ghosts” and “Two Hearts,” were both solid, but the show reached a whole new level when Springsteen and company unleashed “Prove It All Night.” The tune, another “Darkness on the Edge of Town” standout, featured the first prominent sax work from Jake Clemons (who is the nephew of the late E Street legend Clarence Clemons) as well as some really aggressive and muscular guitar playing from the bandleader himself.

They’d keep the party rolling in high gear with the defiant “Born in the U.S.A.” anthem “No Surrender” before thrilling the audience with the tour debut of “Atlantic City,” delivering a full-band version that shared the lyrics — and not much else — with the stark solo recording originally found on 1982’s “Nebraska.”

Springsteen’s voice was on point throughout the night, showing no signs of the medical condition that originally forced him to postpone these Chase shows — which were originally scheduled for last December — as well as other dates. The star did bring up the subject about 80 minutes into the show, which was first time he paused to really talk to the crowd all evening.

“My belly hurt so bad, I couldn’t sing,” explained Springsteen, who underwent treatment for peptic ulcer disease. “Every time I went to sing, my belly ached. When I went to do anything, my belly ached. Then it ached some more. So, we couldn’t make it. But I’m glad to be back tonight.”

The last third of the main set was all A-list material, as the singer rolled through “Backstreets,” “Because the Night,” “She’s the One,” “Wrecking Ball,” “The Rising” and “Badlands” before closing, some 130 minutes after he started the show, with the always-popular “Thunder Road.”

The 18 musicians would take their well-deserved bows, but then, instead of leaving the stage, it was right back to business as they rolled through a generous encore highlighted by “Land of Hope and Dreams” (another tour debut), “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and, of course, “Born to Run.”

“San Francisco!” Springsteen exclaimed as the encore drew to a close. “I want you to go home tonight and then I want you to wake up tomorrow morning and I want you to tell everybody that you see that you that you’ve just seen the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, earth-shocking, hard-rocking, booty-shaking, earth-quaking, love-making, Viagra-taking, history-making legendary E Street Band.”

Consider it done, Boss.
