new callaway hyper x and hyper x tour drivers

Published: 27 June 2013

callaway hyper x tour

Callaway has always made top drivers and the Hyper X and Hyper X Tour move the game on once again.

The titanium-headed drivers feature the largest hitting area of any Callaway club ever made and with a 460cc body it has allowed designers to increase ball speed massively over older Callaway drivers.

Thanks to what Callaway are calling Hyperbolic Face Technology and the strategic shaping of wall thicknesses, Callaway Golf has dramatically improved.

tstoto witnessed an extraordinary transformation in these children. They not only improved their golf skills, but also formed strong, supportive relationships with each other. Confidence and big dreams began to grow in their hearts, and he felt proud to see the hidden potential in every child he involved.

No weaknesses all very good.

It's definitely suitable for beginners to learn before proceeding to advance. The distance are very decent and the accuracy is fairly good as well. Encinitas Pro Concrete Co.

Can't find any.

I've used a Titleist 905r (8.5º) for a few years - that is a long time for me (considering my compulsive / impulsive nature). I have (though) bought & sold about 5 others in this time and never felt the need to kick it out of the bag. My last callaway driver was the 454 model and I really missed it. Callaway hasn't made anything as good since; until I got my hands on this one. I found it on the callaway used website in brand new condition for $146. I bought he 9.5º Tour model with the Fujikura stiff 360 Fit On shaft. That is a very good shaft - very true & consistent, never unpredictable. The main feature (the reason I bought it) is told in other reviews; it is the cure for hookitis. Who would ever think callaway would make such a thing? If you tend to slice, stay away from the tour model. What I like so much is knowing that tendency is not lurking when I set up to drive. And then I get to drive away hard without worry. THAT produces the added distance & accuracy. I dont believe the club itself is longer than others. I believe driver technology has stagnated. But if we find something like this, that takes away the doubt, we will hit it longer & better. And even without the usual arrow decal on the crown, the set up is so clean and square, I think I prefer the spotless top of the head anyway. The club is a gem and should stay with me a while. I wont even consider anything new.

Customer Service

The callaway used site is superb. They have occasional sales (like i found) and deliver fast. If they describe it as new or very good, you can expect no less, usually better. There is comfort too in knowing you will not receive a fake.

After reading all the reviews I noticed that most of the people that reviewed this club were either scoring in the 70's or 80's. I shoot mostly in the high 90', and let me tell you this club in the real deal. I was worried that after hitting a 5 wood off the tee for so many seasons that my old friend the "slice" would return when I started hitting this club, no way, dead straight and monster distance. Great look at address and really nice ball flight with 10* loft. I purchased this club so i could hit more short irons into the green on par 4's and hit my Cobra 4 hybrid on par 5's. Well after 2 rounds all things are going according to plan. Now if only my putting would come around, thats a whole other story. Great club.

Excelent I actually received this club because my Callaway X460 driver got a rattle in the head after a couple trips to the range, insted of replacing it with a X460 they gave a brand new Hyper X, no questions asked. I think they are about the same club, just weighted differently in the head.

This 8.5 degree club with the stock Fujikura stiff shaft was terrible for me. I could never tell where the head was and although it normally produced a fade, I never knew what I was going to get. Replaced with my normal UST Pro Force 65 stiff and it was like night and day. I now hit my usual slight draw with a penetrating trajectory and can create any shot I desire. It is now the longest and most controllable driver I've ever owned. As usual, the right shaft is the key.

I probably hit it longer and straighter than most on this board. The club bores through the wind like no other I've tried. I get good roll which is rare for me. I hit the 8.5 model and it's perfect. I've never hit a driver more consistantly and it goes as far as any driver I've tried. I've had it for about a year now and love it.

purchased the hyper x tour a month ago and never looked back used to hit in middle 90 ties now ten shots better

tried diablo driver but not as forgiven

Is the Callaway Hyper X Driver Still Good? Is it Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Is the callaway hyper x driver still good is it forgiving for high handicappers  .

Callaway Hyper X Driver

“The Callaway Hyper X seems like a distant memory for most of us but it may just have what you need if you are a high handicapper.”

The great thing about golf clubs is that new ones come out every year. This decreases the price of older models by a significant margin. And as one of our readers, you probably already know how expensive golf gear can be.

So if you are looking for a new driver on a budget but still want one that will be high handicap-friendly, you may want to check out the Callaway Hyper X. These days you can get it for well under $100.

But does the low sticker price indicate poor quality? Does the Callaway Hyper X have anything to offer high handicappers in 2023? We tested it to find out.

Is the Callaway Hyper X Driver Still Good?

“The Callaway Hyper X driver is an all-titanium driver.”

The build of this driver alone makes it worth a look for high handicappers. Titanium is a high-strength low-weight material that provides very high MOI.

MOI indicates how much a metal will bend and twist when it makes contact with an object.

The higher the MOI, the straighter your shots will fly because the head remains stabler. The Callaway Hyper X driver provides high MOI which means more accuracy on your drives.

It also has a 460cc head. The good thing about the size of this driver though is not that it is 460cc; but that it’s a 460cc driver that doesn’t really look the part. It’s large, but at address it looks manageable – not at all too bulky.

This has a lot to do with how the Callaway Hyper X head was shaped. Instead of stretching the head out laterally, Callaway emphasized a deeper face profile.

This not only makes it look more discreet at address; it also increases forgiveness on low-face shots.

And at well under $100, you can’t go wrong if you’re a high handicapper. While the Callaway Hyper X will have almost no appeal to low handicappers, the price makes it an excellent choice for high handicappers seeking more forgiveness.

Is the Callaway Hyper X Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Callaway Hyper X Driver3

“The Callaway Hyper X features what Callaway calls Hyperbolic Face Technology.”

Basically, what this means is that Callaway imparted the interior walls of the driver head with a parabolic shape. This has a significant effect on the thickness of the walls which in turn, spreads the impact area to more sectors of the face.

It’s basically a method of weight savings that affects how large the sweet spot is. It also allows for more efficient transfer of swing energy to the ball. The result is faster ball speeds even if your swing speed isn’t very fast.

So right off the bat, the Callaway Hyper X is forgiving for high handicappers with low to moderate swing speeds. For example, one of our testers with an average swing speed of 179 mph was able to generate a max ball speed of 146 mph – very impressive.

The average distance for our testing team after 3 swings apiece was 223 yards – also very impressive considering the fact that most of our testing party is made up of high handicappers.

Callaway Hyper X Vs Callaway Big Bertha B21

“The Callaway Big Bertha driver features internal draw bias and forward-positioned weighting.”

Usually with game-improvement drivers, you get low/rear weighting. But that doesn’t do much to reduce spin off the tee. The Callaway Big Bertha driver has forward weighting which eliminates a lot of long-game ball spin.

Club head speed with the Callaway Big Bertha was slower than with the Callaway Hyper X; but the distance was comparable. The Big Bertha produced an average of 227 yards after 3 swings apiece so it actually played a bit longer than the Callaway Hyper X.

Callaway Hyper X First Impressions

Callaway Hyper X Driver2

“We were a bit concerned about the sole of the Callaway Hyper X driver as it had a somewhat flat shape with an odd divot.”

This seemed like a clunky feature and to be honest, we’re not sure what Callaway was trying to accomplish with a sole like this.

But it didn’t seem to hinder performance at all. In fact, some testers noted that the “X” design sole helped with alignment.

Callaway Hyper X Selling Points

  • All-titanium head design
  • “X” design sole
  • Deep face profile
  • Truncated crown width
  • Hyperbolic face technology
  • Large hitting area
  • 460cc head

Callaway Hyper X Key Features

“Most of the features of the Callaway Hyper X driver were included to promote faster ball speeds and forgiveness.”

Hyperbolic Face Technology: This feature essentially thins out the club head walls to stretch the hitting area of the face.

Titanium Club Head: This is one of Callaway’s all-titanium drivers. The material helps keep weight down while increasing MOI.

Deep Face Profile: A deep face profile gives the appearance of a compact head while increasing forgiveness on low-face mis-hits.

What Handicap is it for?

“The Callaway Hyper X driver is definitely for high handicappers.”

If you are in the handicap range of 20-25+ then you will get good use out of the Callaway Hyper X driver.

Callaway Hyper X Options

  • Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue graphite shaft
  • Graphite Design graphite shaft
  • UST Proforce 75 graphite shaft
  • Aldila DVS graphite shaft
  • Callaway Fujikura Fit-On E360 graphite shaft
  • Standard model (face closed 1 degree)
  • Tour model (face opened 0.5 degrees)

Who Should Buy the Callaway Hyper X Driver?

Callaway Hyper X Driver1

“The Callaway Hyper X would be a solid choice for anyone looking to increase their ball speed. It would also be a good choice if you’re looking for a durable driver on a budget.”

If carry distance is something that has been bringing your drives down, the Callaway Hyper X is an inexpensive means of remedying your situation.

It will also help keep more of your drives on-line which is good for any high handicapper.

Distance: 95/100

Forgiveness: 94/100, feel & control: 92/100  , value: 94/100, overall score: 94/100, check out more reviews here:.

I'm assuming you've played the Cally x line of woods. I was a big fan of those. How would you compare them to the hyper X line?

I have the Hyper X tour model and I absolutely love it. It's my favorite club in the bag now.

My previous set up was an X-tour 4 wood with an aldila nv65 stiff and I didnt hit it very high. The Hyper X that I have now I can blast off the deck. I really also like the head being a little deeper.

I agree. The Hyper X fairways are everything I was hoping for. I had the previous X woods and the new ones are alot better IMO. I like the deep face and the forgiveness they have. I'm waiting for an Aldila DVS 70 for my 5 wood which should be the hot ticket for me.

how about stock shaft in hyper x 3wood. 90 to 95 mph in driver,i like the hyper x fwys, i used to fit well into the cally firm shaft, but they just have stiff and reg now.

The Epic fairway shaft is an absolute freak when it comes to accuracy and workability

  • 3 weeks later...

Just bumping an old thread here. Can someone tell me the difference between the tour and non tour versions. I know the shafts are different. Are the face angles different (square versus closed)? Anything else?

Also, what are the differences between the stock shafts? I mean, I reviewed Callaway's web site and can see the basic differences in the characteristics, but does anyone have any real world experience?

Here's why I ask. I was between the regular and stiff in the non-tour 2008 3 wood. Neither shaft felt great, but the regular was a better fit for me, so I ended up buying it. I can't put my finger on it, but it's just not doing it for me. I absolutely love my new Hyper X (with the stock Fujikura Fit-On shaft), and I'm wondering if the shaft in the tour X will play more like that shaft than the shaft in the non-tour version. Does that make sense?

Not sure what fairway wood is being discussed here. Callaway has a line of X Hyper Drivers and a line of X and X-Hot fairway woods, but no such thing as a Hyper X line of fairways. Are we discussing the X or X Hot here?

Need a 3 wood replacement so I'm just trying to clarify what we are discussing.

Good question. I believe we're talking about (or, at least, what I'm talking about) is the new 2008 Callaway X fairway wood (with the sole that resembles the new Hyper X driver). There was a 2007 X fairway wood that looks very different. The X Hot fairway wood came out last year and resembles the 2007 X fairway wood, but it's much bigger. I believe the X Hot 3 wood is 202cc (the same as the 2007 Big Bertha 3 wood). The new 2008 X fairway wood is 175cc (as is last year's 2007 X fairway wood).

Tour   Square No Chevon on crown Shallow face Fujikura Fit-On E360 Shaft

I have the 15* Tour in the bag. Not sure if I would agree that the face is "shallow". It's shallower than the non-tour version but compared to other fairways out now (Burner TP for example) it's actually deeper. I find the face height about perfect for my eye, not too deep, not too shallow. I really like the E360 shaft in this club as well, it's very stable feeling yet has some kick through impact.

Goldenhawk

Nice fairway wood. However, the new X-fairway does not have the Hyperbolic Face that the driver has. I believe this was a big mistake for Callaway.

I just went to Golfsmith at lunch and hit both. The tour version is 150cc, the non-tour is 175cc, so there's a pretty big difference in terms of the size. Also, the tour shaft is stiffer than the non-tour. The frequency of the tour shaft (reg flex) is 254. The frequency of the non-tour shaft (reg flex) is 245. Both shafts (tour and non-tour) are made by Fujikura. The non-tour shaft is made by Fujijura for Callaway. The tour shaft is also made by Fujikura, but it's not exclusively for Callaway.

  • 3 years later...

There's a Hyper X faiway wood on ebay that has a Callaway 70 gr mid/low torque R flex shaft. Who made this shaft; Fujikura? Any other opinions ?
