Your kids are constantly changing, and so are you! The best Caribbean islands for families with toddlers might not be the best island to visit with kids who need adventure sports, waves, or great snorkeling. 

After visiting more than a dozen kid friendly islands (and researching many, many more), it’s become clear that finding the best Caribbean island with kids is really a matchmaking game.

In many ways, you can’t go wrong. Every Caribbean island offers something unique. Frankly, we haven’t been to a Caribbean island with kids that we think would be bad choice.  

But the goal is to help you narrow down the choices, to assess which of these best Caribbean islands for families is best for YOU. 

Let’s cut through the information overload and get to the point.  

The Best Caribbean Islands With Kids 

1.  grenada.

Grenada was my first Caribbean love . Located at the bottom of the eastern Caribbean chain, just north of Trinidad & Tobago, it has it all. 

Grenada has a few fantastic small hotels . Our favorites have an authentic vibe rather than a cookie-cutter resort feel. 

The island  otherwise remains largely under the tourism radar. There are a couple of up-scale restaurants and plenty of beachfront dining.  T here are no high rises here to spoil the view or overcrowd the shore.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or something more active, Grenada is among the best Caribbean islands for families. Especially families who love to cook.

For kids of all ages, a  main attraction is Grand Anse Beach, one of the Caribbean’s best beaches: a two-mile stretch of white sand backed by palm trees. It’s shallow and calm, making it ideal for young kids to swim.  The more adventurous travelers will love Grenada’s lush rainforest interior , with hikes and waterfalls aplenty.

There’s also a medical school right near the best hotels! This may help to ease the minds of nervous parents looking for the best Caribbean islands for babies. 

One note: Grenada is among the hardest islands to navigate by car for unexperienced island drivers. If you’ve driven in the islands before, you’ll love it. If not, we’d love to help you arrange excursions with a driver.

2. Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Providenciales is widely considered to be one of the best islands in the Caribbean for families. Its international airport has some of the shortest and most frequent direct flights from many East Coast cities. The convenience factor of Turks and Caicos  is hard to beat.

What’s more, 3-mile long Grace Bay Beach is consistently ranked as one of the best beaches in the world. It’s a calm, kid-friendly beach dotted with  luxury family resorts  and easy access to snorkeling . If sparking blue water is on your wish list, you’ll find it here. 

One thing that really makes  Turks & Caicos a uniquely great Caribbean destination for families  is that many of the luxury hotels have suites with multiple bedrooms and full kitchens. Grocery shopping in Turks and Caicos is easy . And on top of all that, there are plenty  beachfront restaurants  nearby that the whole family will love. 

With a great selection of luxury resorts – some with kids clubs! – a calm beach, and easy access from major U.S. cities, we think Turks and Caicos is one of the best Caribbean islands to visit with toddlers in particular.  

If you are traveling with older kids, and looking to break up your trip with something more adventurous, take a  quick and easy ferry to relatively empty Middle Caicos . Stay at Dragon Cay Resort and wake up to some of the best views anywhere.

Turks and Caicos Is: 

• The best Caribbean island for families with toddlers who want something lovely and easy;  
• The perfect location for a luxury resort stay;  
• Best for a great beach, clear water, and a walkable town;  
• Not for the budget conscious, as its among the more pricey and built-up islands. 

3. French  Saint Martin 

We know several families who have returned to the French side of Saint Martin again and again, having had fantastic trips with kids of all ages. Much as we love exploring new Caribbean destinations, St. Martin is one we’ve been tempted to revisit.  

A top reason to love St. Martin: the villas. French  Saint Martin has an extensive inventory of gorgeous villas, which somehow remain more affordable than those in other top Caribbean destinations for kids.  Families who dream of finding a sprawling Caribbean manor to rent with extended family or groups of friends should defintiely consider Saint Martin. 

And, of course, if you prefer a hotel experience, you’ll find that in St. Martin / Sint Maarten! We love two small boutique hotels in Grand Case, where you’ll have both beaches and food at your fingertips:  Hotel L’Esplanade  and  Grand Case Beach Club  are both walking distance to some of the islands best restaurants. 

Another great thing about tackling Saint Martin with kids is that it’s easy to get around by car. The island has 37 different beaches, many of them calm and swimmable with littles. You’ll want to leave the villa and explore them. There’s also  plenty do in Saint Martin beyond the beach . 

Our favorite St Martin beach is the stunning Pinel Island, which has perfect swimming conditions for kids and great beachside service for adults. A day at Pinel Island is a Caribbean dream.

Another reason to love Saint Martin? The French food. We love the French Caribbean vibe , starting the day with pastries or crepes for the kids, and coffee for mom and dad, before heading off to the beach. The casual lolo restaurants that dot St. Martin’s towns and beaches are also excellent for kids.

Saint Martin Is: 

• One of the best Caribbean islands for young families;  
• Best for those who want to explore a safe, small island that’s easy to navigate; 
• Full of delightful food in two walkable towns; 
• Great for families seeking a small casual hotel, or groups looking to book a villa. 

4. Roatan, Honduras

When you think of Honduras, you might not immediately imagine a kid-friendly Caribbean island. But Roatan, Honduras is truly a hidden gem for family travel.

There’s nothing fancy about Roatan, and that’s why we love it. This little island packs in a ton for kids, from animal encounters to snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, all without pretense or fuss.  For a detailed account, check out our blog post on  why Roatan is great for kids . 

Roatan is known for its diving, but the reef starts just off-shore. What that means for parents traveling with little ones is that the off-shore snorkeling is phenomenal. Young swimmers can wade into the water and see the reef teeming with colorful fish.

At West Bay Beach, a particularly great spot for families, low-key restaurants line the sand, offering a relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices.  

Beyond the beach, there are plenty of activities for kids in Roatan . Your little travelers will also love meeting the island’s friendly monkeys, sloths, and iguanas. And, perhaps best of all, Roatan remains an affordable destination, even as other Caribbean islands have become increasingly expensive. 5.  Dominica

When it comes to Caribbean island vacations, Dominica — not to be confused with the Dominican Republic — is often overlooked in favor of more mainstream destinations like Jamaica and the Bahamas.

Dominica’s dramatic oceanside cliffs, rich history and culture, and great hotel options offer something unique for families looking to get off the beaten path. It may be the best island in the Caribbean for families looking for an active and adventure-packed vacation. It doesn’t surprise us in the least that Travel and Leisure placed Dominica at the very top of the  best Caribbean islands 2022 list.

Dominica’s network of hiking trails, waterfalls, and natural pools are unparalleled in the region, making it the perfect place for nature lovers. There are also opportunities for whale watching, snorkeling, and swimming. (Rainforest spa, anyone?)

In terms of accommodations, your options range from some of the region’s best  luxury  resorts to family-owned eco-cottages . You can also find small boutique hotels with private pools . Whatever you’re looking for you can find it in Dominica. 

Because Dominica is not your beach-lounge type of vacation, this island may be best enjoyed with elementary-school-aged kids rather than toddlers and babies.

• A top Caribbean island for families with kids age 4+; 
• A large island with mountainous, windy roads – not for the faint of heart;

6. Bequia, St  Vincent & The Grenadines

If you’re looking for a family Caribbean vacation that combines adventure with a touch of family friendly luxury, look no further than Bequia.

A handful of small, lush hills plunge down into white sand bays that are perfect for smaller swimmers. The island is located in the Grenadines, just south of St. Vincent. Bequia is best accessed by a 1-hour ferry from St. Vincent, although there are also direct charter flights from Barbados and St. Lucia. It requires a journey but it’s totally worth it if you have a week or more for your Caribbean family vacation.

Once on the island, visitors will love the throw-back Caribbean charm. While there is plenty to do, the pace of this tiny island is relaxed and relaxing. If you’re intrigued but wondering where to stay, Bequia Beach Hotel is one of our all-time favorite Caribbean resorts for kids.  The family vacation we spent there, when our kids with 8 months and 4 years old, was one of our best. 7. Bonaire 

It’s always a treat to find a remote Caribbean destination that’s not overly developed or touristy. But often, those destinations are either hard to get to, or hard to navigate. After all, that’s what keeps the tourists away.  Bonaire feels like a secret, and yet it’s somehow easy. That combination is why we think Bonaire is one of the best Caribbean islands for kids .  

You will know the moment you arrive that you’re in a very special place. Compared to its more populated neighbors, Aruba and Curacao , Bonaire is quiet, with only a fraction of the population.  The town of Kralendijk is colorful and lively – but compact enough that you will never more than a few blocks away from the ice cream shop in the middle.

It’s all about the sea here. Since 1979, the waters surrounding Bonaire have been part of a national marine park, and the marine life is the best we’ve seen in the Caribbean. The wildlife is abundant and accessible to kids — flamingos, iguanas, crabs, reef fish, and more are at your fingertips all day. Take your kids to explore Bonaire’s best beaches , and you’ll often be the only people around. 

And yet, Bonaire makes it easy for families at every turn. Customs is quick, the airport is small, and you can be at your hotel within an hour of landing in Bonaire.  The U.S. dollar is widely accepted.  The hotel staff is friendly, warm and welcoming. And the island’s small size, and flat landscape, makes it easy to explore. 

Bonaire is: 

• The perfect, easy destination for kids of all ages, but especially those who love water;  
• Flat and very easy to navigate by car, with a charming walkable town in the center; 
• A good choice for those who love a blossing food scene; 
• Full of nature and access to wildlife.

Here’s what in store for you in magical Curacao:   Pristine  beaches tucked into small coves.  Accessible snorkeling.  A day trip to a deserted island . A colorful capital city offering a wide range of culinary treats.  Myriad hotel options, ranging from some of the most affordable beachfront resorts in the Caribbean to ultimate boutique luxury.  

Because of its location, Curacao is often compared to its sister Dutch islands of Aruba and Bonaire.  Yet in many ways, the three could not be more different.  The ABC islands each have something unique to offer your family . 

Curacao is the more European, and urban, of the three islands. The capital city, Willemstaad, is like a prism that reflects back all the colors of the Caribbean.   But there’s access to nature beyond the city center, with a national park on the island’s eastern end. 

Curacao is:

• Best for families with kids who want to explore, and who are old enough to snorkel. 

9.  Antigua

Antigua is perfect for parents who want to unwind and relax. The island has several small, all-inclusive resorts, that offer the serenity and calm of a boutique hotel but the amenities of a larger resort.   

And there is still plenty to do. Antigua is known for its 365 beaches — one for each day of the year — offering plenty of chances to explore and making this one of the best family vacation spots in the Caribbean.

Another highlight of a family trip to Antigua would be the weekly barbecue at Shirley Heights, which offers the best view on the island (shown above). On Sundays, the great food and live music create a festive atmosphere that is perfect for family fun.

Antigua also offers a snorkeling experience that caters to younger travelers, which makes it an especially good trip for the under 5 crowd. Long Bay Beach, on Antigua’s east coast, has plentiful marine life on a reef in shallow water. In fact, the reefs are so shallow that you can walk to them, and even kids who can’t swim yet may be able to see fish and practice with snorkel masks.

If you’re based in or near New York, Antigua should be high on your list of family friendly Caribbean islands, as several airlines offer direct flights from JFK.  

Antigua is:

10.  Saint Kitts

We often get requests for the best family friendly Caribbean islands with activities beyond the beach.  If that sounds like you, St Kitts may be the right choice for your best family Caribbean vacation. 

Saint Kitts is steeped in history, and the land-based activities seem endless. With little kids, s tart with Brimstone Hill Fortress, perhaps one of the Caribbean’s best forts for kids. This massive stone fortress with maze-like ramps and stairs will certainly help kids burn off energy. F amilies with young children can also hop among the black sand beaches on the island’s Caribbean side, or just relax at one of the best luxury Caribbean resorts for families, the iconic Park Hyatt.

For older kids, the  activities in Saint Kitts seem endless.   To start, there  the  Saint Kitts scenic train  — a three-hour journey, best enjoyed with lots of snacks. But what kid doesn’t want to take a train in vacation? Parents will love the 360-degree view from the top deck.  Adventurous families can also zipline through the jungle, ride horses on the beach, or ATV through the rainforest. 

Of course, when it’s time to relax, St. Kitts has great beaches for families too. The best beaches in St. Kitts on the kids are on the Caribbean side. These are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles. With all this variety, you’re bound to have a fantastic family trip.

Saint Kitts is:

• Best for those seeking an authentic connection with their destination, and eager outside the resort. 

11.  Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia has perhaps the most recognizable coastline in the Caribbean: The Pitons rise dramatically from the Eastern Caribbean sea and reach for the sky. Along with Dominica, Martinique, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada, Saint Lucia is one of the Winwards Islands that run north to south and make up the southern arc of the Caribbea chain. Each of these islands shares the same  volcanic geology .

St Lucia probably is most well known for its  romantic boutique hotels  that surround the Pitons.  But those gorgeous resorts, up on the hillside with picturesque views, would also be perfect for young families to enjoy with a baby who’s not yet mobile. 

Beyond that, though,  Saint Lucia’s riches would be lost on those with tiny travelers who simply want to putter around beachside.   Known for its  mountainous interior  and  underwater world , it’s the ultimate Caribbean destinations for older, adventurous kids. 

Saint LUcia is: 

• A top Caribbean destination for travel to a luxury resort with a baby; 
• One of the best islands for kids eager to hike, snorkel, and explore; 
• A not-to-be-missed destination for lovers of a stunning view.  

12. Saint Barts  

St. Barts is often thought of as a destination for the wealthy and famous, and it’s true that the island has its share of designer shops and luxurious resorts. However, St. Barts is also an under-the-radar choice for the best Caribbean vacations with kids.  

When in St. Barts with kids, it’s all about the slow pace, the beaches, and the animals. It’s a great choice for an easy, quiet vacation. And of course, no trip to St. Barts would be complete without trying some of the delicious French-Caribbean cuisine.

The island is home to some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, with calm waters and powdery white sand that is perfect for play. Kids will especially love the beach on the airport side of the island to watch the planes fly in — they come quite close!

St Barts is also full of animals. Kids can see iguanas, turtles, snails, hermit crabs, pelicans, and schools of colorful fish in the shallow beach areas. Start your mornings with a nature walk or hike to get some energy out and explore the island’s wildlife.

Best of all, because St. Barts is relatively small, it’s easy to get around without a car, making it a stress-free vacation destination for families.

13.  Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico makes many families’ lists of top travel destinations. You’ll almost always see the most affordable Caribbean flights to this destination, direct from many U.S. cities. Plus, no passport required also means no long lines at customs.

Most families make a stop in San Juan. This charming city has so much to offer: colorful buildings, accessible beaches, delicious gelato, and cobblestone streets and plazas to discover. El Morro and San Cristobal are two of the most popular forts in the Caribbean, and they offer great city and ocean views.

We recommend spending no more than a day or two in San Juan with kids. Then, get out and explore the island’s natural beauty, from the beaches of the East Coast, to the hills of El Yunque National Forest, to the crashing waves of Rincon, a surfer’s paradise. 

El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, and it’s an amazing place to hike and see waterfalls with kids. The El Portal Visitor Center is a great starting point, and from there you can choose one of several different trails depending on your fitness level and how long you want to hike.

You can explore El Yunque either from San Juan, or from Fajardo on the east coast. That’s where you’ll find beautiful beaches, bigger resorts, and a one of the  most beautiful bioluminescent bays in the world . 

Or, take the road less traveled, and head west to the surfing mecca Rincon, which has a more bohemian atmosphere. Your kids will love hunting for shells on the beach and watching surfers from the point at the town’s lighthouse.

No matter where you go in Puerto Rico, your kids are sure to have a great time!

Puerto Rico is:

• One of the best Caribbean islands for families who have less than a week, with daily direct flights; 
• A great option for a last minute trip, with no passports required; 
• Best for older kids who can enjoy the historic sights and rainforest.  

14.  Jamaica  

Jamaica is one of the bigger Caribbean islands and has multiple, distinct tourist areas.  You could take several different family trips here and have a great experience each time. The thing we love most? The warmth of Jamaican hospitality.

If you’re looking for an easy all-inclusive resort to visit, with a kids club and all the frills, Jamaica’s Montego Bay has endless options. Or venture a little further, and t ry the infamous seven-mile beach in Negril.  Two very different options, we can help you choose between Montego Bay and Negril.  

Or be inspired to create at GoldenEye Resort in Ocho Rios. Or head completely off the beaten path to Jake’s Treasure Beach to see Jamaica’s undiscovered south coast.  Or better yet, split your stay between more than one location! 

For older kids, Jamaica has, even more, to offer beyond beaches and resorts. These can include river rafting, cliff jumping, and hiking the Blue Mountains. (Bring me home some coffee, please!) It’s also one of just a handful of Caribbean islands where you can go horseback riding in the water.

Lots of U.S. airlines fly direct to either Kingston or Montego Bay, making it easily accessible. 

Plus, when it comes to villas and all-inclusive resorts, Jamaica’s options are more affordable than many other islands. Everyone should go to Jamaica at some point, and definitely bring the kids.  (And don’t forget to sample some delicious Jamaican rum while you’re there.)

15. St. Thomas,  US Virgin Islands

I’ll admit it: For many years, I told people that St. Thomas was not among my favorite Caribbean Islands. With the emphasis on duty-free shopping and crowds from cruise ships, it just didn’t feel like my style. But the truth? I just wasn’t doing it right.

I recently re-discovered St. Thomas as a family destination. This trip put the U.S. Virgin Islands squarely back on my list of best Caribbean islands for kids.

First off, St. Thomas is a short flight from many U.S. cities. With no passport required, the hassle of traveling with kids drops down a notch. There are direct flights from some European capitals as well.

Once you arrive, St. Thomas offers endless opportunities for beach-hopping, island-hopping, snorkeling, and hiking.  We especially loved the  Tree Limin’ Extreme zipline  in St. Thomas for kids 5 and up, which is on the side of a hill with gorgeous views of Magen’s Bay Beach. 

St. Thomas also has the  Coral World Ocean Park, one of the best (and affordable) seaquariums in the Caribbean, perfect for little kids who love marine life.

Perhaps the best part of St. Thomas, though, is that it makes for a great home base to explore the other Virgin Islands. You have easy access to St. John via the 20-minute Red Hook ferry. (That’s especially true if you stay near the east end of St. Thomas. We highly recommend Secret Harbour Beach Resort for families interested in exploring both islands.)  You can explore the British Virgin Islands by ferry, too. 

St Thomas is:

• An incredible home base for an island-hopping adventure through the US and British Virgin Islands 
• Best explored with kids 5+ who can enjoy ziplining, snorkeling, and beach-hopping. 
• One of the best Caribbean islands for kids without passports. 

16. St. John,  US Virgin Islands

Just a 20 minute ferry ride from Saint Thomas, Saint John feels like a different world. St. John is one of the best Caribbean islands  to visit with kids who are slightly older and down for adventure. 

Saint John is much easier to navigate than St. Thomas.  If you stay near Cruz Bay at our recommended hotel  Gallows Point , you can walk into town for groceries and dining options. 

Most travelers to Saint John rent a car, though, which we highly recommend. Saint John is about 60% V irgin Islands National Park.  It has several beaches that rank among the best in the Caribbean, like Trunk Bay Beach and Maho Bay Beach, where you’re virtually guaranteed to see sea turtles while snorkeling.   

Rent a car, drive around, swim and explore. That’s the name of the game in Saint John. 

While there are a could of hotel options, Saint John is better known as a villa destination. That makes it a good choice for groups with older kids who can entertain each other, and who want to explore. 

St, John is:

• A great choice for a multi-generational villa rental; 
• Best for families with older kids who enjoy hiking and exploring; 
• A top Caribbean destination for those who enjoy a small island and walkable town.  
• Another top Caribbean island for kids without passports. 

17. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Simply put, Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is known as one of the Caribbean’s best, with calm waters that are great for yound kids, and also snorkeling enthusiasts. For an English-speaking destination, with lots of shops and restaurants, and direct flight options, Grand Cayman is a top choice for a family friendly island. 

The luxury hotels on Seven Mile Beach are a good fit for families with little kids, who simply want to take it easy on a great beach.  As your kids get a little older, venture beyond the resorts for animal encounters like snorkeling, swimming with stingrays , the turtle sanctuary, and starfish point.

Grand cayman is: 

• One of the best Caribbean islands for toddlers, with calm seas and a gentle beach;   
• A top choice for an easy, quick resort stay, with crystal clear blue water; 
• Known for having some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean; 
• Better for families seeking the comforts of home, rather than an off-the-grid getaway. 

18. The dominican republic 

The Dominican Republic is the ultimate quick and easy Caribbean getaway with kids. For families with active kids looking to get off for a few days to a resort with waterslides, pools, and entertainment, the Dominican Republic will always be a solid choice. 

• One of the biggest and most varied Caribbean islands, with options for kids of all ages; 
• The best choices for families looking for an affordable, big, all-inclusive resort. 

19. Bermuda

Recommended by Victoria of Guide Your Travel , who spent childhood summers in Bermuda.  

Bermuda is a great place to visit with kids of all ages.  The island is known for its paradise-like beaches with pink sand and crystal-clear waters. 

Bermuda is suitable for kids of all ages, but kids 6 and up will really enjoy the underwater world here.  Kids ages 12 and up can take advantage of introductory scuba diving classes.  And kids between the ages of 6 and 14 will enjoy the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Center which is a fun, interactive museum explaining Bermuda’s incredible underwater world and its history with shipwrecks. 

Another great activity for kids is to explore Bermuda’s stunning parks with hidden caves and underground lakes — lots to do for families beyond the beach. 

Note, though, that Bermuda can be an expensive place to visit, which is why most tourists come here as part of a cruise and only stay for one or two days.  Bermuda can be more than a cruise destination for families. You could easily spend a week or two here without running out of things to do.  Here are some  tips for making your trip to Bermuda more affordable , so you can extend your stay! 

Bermuda is 

• One of the best islands to visit with kids over the age of 6 
• Best for the luxury traveler, as it is among the more expensive Caribbean islands

With plenty of amenities to make you feel at home, your family will enjoy the white-sand beaches of Aruba, definitely one of the best tropical islands for kids. O n most of the beaches, you’ll be able to rent palapas and chairs for shade and comfort. 

For younger children, the sand in Aruba is perfect for building sandcastles — always family favorite. Be sure to visit Baby Beach for its shallow water and extra gentle waves.

For older kids, Aruba’s Splash Park, full of inflatables, offers a day of family-fun. You can also visit the Donkey Sanctuary, the Butterfly Farm, or take a tour on a pirate schooner and sail the coast of Aruba!

Teens will love the active adventures that Aruba has to offer. They can take windsurfing lessons, visit Arikok National Park and the Natural Bridge. Going parasailing or renting one (or more) UTV’s for the day is a fun way to explore Aruba. There are so many  things to do in Aruba , you won’t get bored!

Travel tip for families: book accommodations in advance, especially if you want to stay in a hotel on Palm Beach. Many restaurants on Palm Beach require reservations for dinner, so plan accordingly.

• A top choice for travel with young kids and toddlers with tons of activities and calm beaches; 
• One of the best islands to visit with kids over summer holidays, with great weather year-round. 

21. New providence island, Bahamas 

If you’re considering the Bahamas islands for your Caribbean family trip, you can’t go wrong! While these islands are not actually located in the Caribbean Sea, the Bahamas are part of the Caribbean region and the ultimate tropical destination for families. 

Nassau on New Providence Island is, from most US cities, the most easily accessible Bahamas destination.  Nassau is most recognizable for its massive mega-resorts like The Atlantis and Baha Mar. But don’t fret, there are some smaller gems to find here too, plus some  stellar local cuisine . 

We recommend pairing your trip to Nassau with a getaway to one of the more remote Out Islands, like Andros or Long Island.  That way, the kids can enjoy a few days of waterslides, and mom and dad also get some of the peace and quiet the Bahamas is best known for.  

Nassau, Bahamas Is: 

• A great choice for young families seeking a quick getaway with a baby;
• Good for a long weekend full of waterslides with older kids;
• Best combined with the Out Islands for a full week. 

22. Exuma, Bahamas 

Bahamas Fun Fact : The island nation of the Bahamas is made up of nearly 700 islands, though they aren’t all inhabited.  If you head out beyond Nassau, you’ll find warm blue water, long stretches of beach, and adorable small hotels, ranging from casual to total luxury.  

Exuma is a collection of more than 350 islands, brimming with hidden coves, natural wonders, and off the beaten track wild attractions. Some of these Exuma islands have amazing family-friendly resorts waiting for you. 

If you want seclusion, relaxation, and quiet beaches, it’s  the Out Islands  for you.  Destinations like Andros, the Exumas, and Harbour Island may take a slightly longer journey (unless you live in Georgia and the Carolinas, where you’ll find lots of direct flights!) but it’s well worth it. Put these islands on your Caribbean bucket list ! 

The Bahamas easily makes our list of best Caribbean islands for families. 

What really stands out to us about the Bahamas are the long, sandy beaches in the Out Islands. If you want blue water as far as the eye can see, and shallow sloping beaches for small kids, these are the islands for you.  

The islands of Exuma, Bahamas are 

• The best Caribbean destinations for families from Atlanta and Charlotte (direct flights!); 
• An easy hop from Miami or Nassau for families traveling from elsewhere; 
• A top Caribbean destination for clear blue water, endless beaches, and no crowds 

The Best Caribbean Island To Visit With Baby

It’s one thing to travel with kids who need activities, stimulation, and their own sleeping space. It’s another to take your first trip to the islands with a baby. Your needs may be totally different.

Tropical vacations can be challenging for families with children, as you've got to worry about long flights, sunburns , sunscreen , water safety , and finding affordable rooms that can accommodate more than two. But don't let those practical issues stop you from traveling with kids to paradise! Many spots in the Caribbean are ideal for vacationing with kids . Here's our list of the 10 best Caribbean destinations for families.

1. Turks and Caicos

For beach fun, this network of islands—especially the popular Providenciales (aka Provo)— is unbeatable. "Grace Bay Beach in Provo spans 12 miles of white sand and generally has calm turquoise water," says Nancy Schretter, founder of FamilyTravelNetwork.com. Plenty of nature activities, lower crime rates than other Caribbean countries, and a variety of family-focused resorts also helped to propel Turks and Caicos to the top spot. Direct flights that take about three hours or less are available from East Coast cities such as Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sand Sanctuaries Your family can sprawl out in a 1,400-square-foot villa at The Somerset on Grace Bay with a kitchen, laundry area, two bathrooms, and a pullout sofa in the living room for master bedroom privacy. Kids ages 5 to 12 can make masks and go on treasure hunts . Younger kids can splash around a pool that starts at just a few inches deep. Babysitting services are also available.

Also on Grace Bay, Ocean Club Resorts offers condo-style suites with a kitchen and laundry area, free loaner baby gear, and babysitting service for a fee. Kids ages 5 and up can earn badges by using the SeaFari wildlife guidebook.

Side Trips Take a quick boat ride to Little Water Cay to see mangroves and the big draw—endangered rock iguanas that will waddle right up to you. If your children are 7 and up, book horseback riding along the beach through Provo Ponies . On Thursday evenings, head over to Bight Children's Park for an Island Fish Fry where tourists mingle with locals. Pick up an inexpensive dinner from restaurant vendors, and enjoy it while listening to a local band.

"Jamaica has lots of personality," says Kyle McCarthy, cofounder of Family Travel Forum. "And the resorts on this island in particular offer lots of activities for toddlers and preschoolers ."

Sand Sanctuaries Situated on a small, calm cove of beachfront near Ocho Rios, the all-inclusive Franklyn D. Resort gives every family a private nanny to watch the kids during the day. "We've been there four times since my girls, now 8 and 11, were toddlers," says Brian Young, of Chicago. "The rooms aren't fancy and the beach, while nice, isn't as beautiful as it is elsewhere on the island. But having a nanny to take the kids swimming or to the resort's scheduled activities so my wife and I can enjoy kid-free time more than makes up for it."

It's a happy mix of land and sea. "With calm surf and lots of space to spread out, many of the beaches are great for families, but there's plenty to do out of the water too," says Doug Stallings, Fodor's Caribbean editor. Zero in on Castries, the capital, and the surrounding area, for family-friendly lodging.

You get a lot of value for your money in the Dominican Republic. "Competition keeps airfare and resort rates down, so many families end up saving $500 or more by coming here," says McCarthy. Stick with the La Romana or Punta Cana areas, which have family-friendly beaches.

Side Trips Book a tour from your resort to the historic capital of Santo Domingo—it'll take about two-and-a-half hours each way, so it's best for older kids. Your hotel concierge can help you book this excursion. Look for one that stops at The Three Eyes National Park (with underground caves and lagoons) and a lighthouse, Faro a Colón, which is a monument to Christopher Columbus.

5. Puerto Rico

If you don't have passports and you want to spare the expense of getting them (over $500 for two adults and two children), Puerto Rico is a great option. "Your kids can be immersed in the unique culture," says Schretter. Fly into San Juan and stay there or in the northeastern part of the island, or split your stay between both locations.

Plus, you'll be able to hang out in the bedroom while the kids go to sleep on the pullout in the living area.

Side Trips "Two must-sees are the historic forts in Old San Juan and the El Yunque rain forest," says Schretter. Take public transportation or a shuttle, if your resort has one, to Castillo San Cristóbal , a huge stone fortress built in 1783; kids ages 5 and up will be able to earn a badge if they take the ranger-led tour. At El Yunque National Forest , in Eastern Puerto Rico, your family will be able to walk on any of the 13 trails (including several stroller-friendly paved ones) to spot parrots, tree frogs, and lots of gorgeous, unusual flowers.

This financial hub offers a pristine beach, a low crime rate, and modern roads so you can explore on your own.

As a first-time mom, I did not understand the desire for resorts with baby clubs. I was very uncomfortable with the thought of leaving my daughter in the care of someone other than a family member whether we were home or away. But once my son came along, I understood the need. BIG TIME.

You see, first-time parents don’t necessarily need a resort with a lot of bells and whistles (yet). But those who have two and maybe even three little ones? THEY. NEED. A. BABY. CLUB.

Properties Offering Baby Care in the Caribbean & Mexico

Most resorts offer some form of private babysitting , or can refer you to a local agency who can help out. But having the convenience of a place to drop off little ones, even just to get them into some air-conditioning for a little bit, can mean a real vacation for you and your partner too.

This list is a work in progress. But, I’ve compiled all of the properties that offer baby clubs or supervised infant and toddler amenities in the Caribbean and Mexico. And they are listed by country below…

Cuba still struggles sometimes with the perception of less-then-appetizing food or somewhat haphazard amenities. But, Cuba is awesome for families. It is safe and clean. And, while the number of resorts that can accommodate large families is somewhat astounding (ie – very very few) it actually has quite a lot of resorts that offer baby care.

Jamaica may be pricier than some other Caribbean destinations, but if you factor in the things like potable tap water, good medical care, and great food, and maybe padding the budget a bit is worth it.

Mexico and its warm and wonderful family-friendly culture has many destinations with their own appeal, plus so many different accommodation options that are suitable for families. They have some amazing resorts, and some of those resorts offer included baby care (or in the instance of Club Med Ixtapa Pacific , available at an extra cost. Baby Club Med is amazing).

But given Mexico ‘s size, there are actually not that many resorts with baby clubs, and with the exception of Club Med’s Baby Club Med and Melia Puerto Vallarta , the minimum age to participate starts at one year.

Beaches Turks & Caicos is amazing, but for this post I just included destinations where I had enough info to write about more than just one property. Unfortunately I don’t have much information about the other islands you’ve mentioned!

Royal Son Bou in Menorca. They not only offer babyclubs, but they’re cheap as well. And at a beach. It’s amazing there. Aimed at 0-4 year olds!

Cruising with a Baby: What to Know From Someone Who’s Done It

If you’re the parent of a baby or small toddler, then the thought of a vacation has definitely crossed your mind. After sleepless nights and days consumed with caring for your baby, taking a cruise and relaxing sounds pretty good right now.

And in fact, a cruise is one of the best vacations you can take with a small child . No matter where you go on the ship, you are only a few minutes from your room. That makes it perfect for midday naps, means you don’t have to carry around a ton of baby supplies, and there is plenty to see and do without going far.

But what’s it really like to cruise with a baby? Take it from someone that’s done it firsthand. There’s a learning curve to the vacation, and it is definitely different than the experience of cruising without a kid. That said, it’s still a great way to travel.

Here’s everything you need to know…

Cruising With a Baby 101 (General Things to Know)

While you may not realize it, there are several items you should know right off the bat if you want to cruise with a small child.

Age Restrictions for Babies The absolute first thing you should know is if you can even take your baby on a cruise. Cruise lines (including the major players like Royal Caribbean and Carnival) require the child be at least six months old on the day of embarkation for most cases. Yes, you can book the cruise when the child is younger, but they must be at least that age by cruise day.

If you are sailing on a transatlantic, transpacific, or a Hawaii cruise, then your baby must be at least 12 months old at the time of sailing.

These age restrictions are put in place for medical purposes. Given the special care needed for infants in case they get sick or injured, cruise lines don’t want children of the most vulnerable ages to be stuck at sea for extended periods of time.

Passport/Documentation for Infants We recommend adults have a passport when they cruise. But do you really need to go through the trouble of getting a passport for an infant? The answer is no, if you are a sailing on a closed-loop cruise (one that begins and ends in the same homeport).

If on a closed-loop cruise, the only documentation you will need a government-issued birth certificate . For children under the age of 16, you don’t need to have any photo identification. You will show the birth certificate at check-in on your first day and when passing through immigration when debarking the cruise back at home.

Cruise Fares & Gratuities for Babies There’s good news and bad news when it comes to cruise fares for babies. The bad news is that yes, you will be charged for having a baby in your room. The good news is that the rate for a third (or fourth) person in a cabin is significantly less. (Note: Some cruise sales offer third or fourth guests free.)

For example, if your cruise fare is about $500 per person for the first two adults in the room, then the cruise fare for a third person will only be a fraction of that. Still, it does usually cost something.

As for gratuities, some cruise lines expect you to pay tips for the child and some do not. For example, Carnival’s policy is that any guests under two years old are not expected to have gratuities added to their account. Royal Caribbean, however, automatically applies gratuities for everyone — including babies. Norwegian charges gratuities only on children three years and older.

Keep this extra charge in mind when shopping for cruise deals as the gratuity can add up over a longer cruise given it costs around $16-18 per person, per day.

Cribs, Formula, Diapers, and Other Baby Supplies One of the biggest headaches of traveling with a baby is all the extra things you need to bring with you. Cruise lines do make it easier by supplying some items, but you’re still going to be packing extra if you bring a baby.

Cribs/Sleeping Areas: Cruise lines make it easy by providing a crib or sleeping area for your child at no extra charge. You should call the cruise line well in advance (2+ weeks from your cruise date) to request a crib be placed in your room. But you don’t have to bring a “pack and play” or sleep with your child in your bed!

High Chairs: High chairs are available in dining areas, just like in a restaurant. If you don’t see one, simply ask the waitstaff for assistance.

Strollers: While some lines might offer stroller rental, we would recommend you always bring your own stroller from home. Kids (and parents) are used to their own strollers. The last thing you want is a stroller that is uncomfortable and unfamiliar to ruin any outing on your trip. In particular, we suggest small, lightweight “umbrella” strollers — not the big jogging strollers like you would have around the neighborhood. Space is at a premium on the ship, so keep it small. 

Diapers/Formula/Other Supplies: Anything your baby consumes, you should bring from home. This includes any formula, snacks, diapers, wipes, rash ointment, baby shampoo and more. There might be items available for purchase on the ship (and there definitely will be in port), but it’s best to bring the items you know and trust from home. Also, pack enough for an extra day or two just in case you run out early.

Cruise Cabins and Accommodations For Your Baby

When you are on your cruise, your cabin is your home away from home. Traveling with a small child, you’ll likely spend a ton of time in the room. Between naps, some feedings, and the kid’s early bedtime, we found ourselves back in the room much more than when we’ve cruised without a baby.

For that reason, we definitely suggest booking a cabin with a balcony. Balconies offer a place for mom and dad to escape to while the baby is sleeping, yet still be able to keep an eye on things. In addition, balconies offer an important source of fresh air — a must-have given how easily stinky diapers can smell up a tiny cabin.

Safety in the Cabin In our experience, cruise cabins are pretty safe for babies and don’t require much childproofing. Plugs were up high where children couldn’t reach. There are no stoves or other hot spots to worry about. Furniture isn’t easily toppled over since things are secured for a rocking ship. Balconies offer full protection from falling — a full sheet of tempered glass means there are no gaps a child could crawl through.

In general, cabins are babyproofed.

The only real issues are with drawers/doors and cleanliness.

Our child loved to open and close drawers and doors. Every cabin has a built-in system of closets and drawers that are easily reached no matter how tall your child is. We found that our son wanted to constantly open drawers, use them to stand up, and then accidentally smash his fingers when he closed them again. The bathroom door also had pieces of trim with extremely sharp edges that were within his reach.

For the most part our cabin was clean to the eye. But just like any hotel room, there are out-of-the-way spots that you can only see when you are down on the ground like a baby. Spots in corners and behind furniture were dirty. Your kid will find these spots! It’s not the end of the world, but be prepared.

Sleeping As mentioned above, the cruise line will provide a crib/pack-n-play at no extra charge. You should contact them a couple of weeks in advance of your trip to let them know you’ll need one. Don’t just assume they will put on in the cabin.

The cribs supplied on our cruises have been perfectly fine, albeit utilitarian. Our child had no problem going to sleep in his normal “butt up” position.

We’ve had our child sleep in his own room since he was about two weeks old. In general he is a good sleeper, but he does wake up a couple of times a night, crying for about a minute before settling back down to sleep. Being in the same room — and in close quarters to other passengers — caused for some restless nights.

For one, instead of hearing our baby grunt or cry over a low-volume baby monitor, the sounds were right in our ear. That meant any sound woke us up. In addition, when our son cried in the middle of the night, we jumped up to calm him immediately to keep from disturbing our ship neighbors instead of letting him settle himself back down.

Frankly, sleeping in the same room as our baby was the worst part of the cruise. It took us back to the first months of having a newborn when we were up several hours each night trying to keep him quiet and calm.

Bathing Cabin showers make it easy to bath your baby. Almost every cabin comes with a handheld sprayer that you can use to wash your kid. There’s no need to bring a bath chair or anything else. Assuming your child can sit up, you can just sit them on the floor of the shower to give a bath.

Eating on a Cruise With Your Baby

Even if your child is a great eater, you might be anxious about dining on a cruise with your kiddo. After all, no one wants to be that family with the loud, messy eater.

On our cruises, we actually avoided the main dining room altogether. Dining in the main dining room each evening is a rather formal process with several different courses. A long, drawn-out meal is not the best environment for a happy baby — or other diners. For everyone’s sake, we simply ate in the buffet or other “grab and go” venues for our meals.

Often we would grab a meal and take it back to the cabin to eat. There are plenty of places on cruise ships to eat that are less formal than the evening dining room, so we never felt out of place in these venues.

All the dining areas will have highchairs available for you to use. Since our child loved eating finger foods like cut bananas or other fruit, he usually made a mess when he ate. We brought along a silicon mat that sticks to any flat surface . With this, we could place his food on the mat for him to eat without worrying about making a mess (or picking up germs) from the actual table. It was a lifesaver.

On days when we were in port or for baby mealtimes where we didn’t want to eat, we would always pack a bottle with formula and his baby food. When it was time to eat, we simply fed him in his stroller.

Note that you can bring on baby food and formula with you when you board . You just want to make sure they are prepackaged and in unopened containers. You can’t bring on homemade food with you on a cruise.

What to Do With Your Baby on a Cruise Ship

If you have a kid who is a little older, then there is no shortage of things for them to do. Most major cruise lines have kids areas have allow parents to drop off their children and offer all sorts of activities. The problem is that these areas cater to older kids.

For example, Carnival doesn’t offer full-time drop-off of kids under two years old (there are times when you can stay and play with your child in the kids area), so be prepared to spend a lot of time with your kiddo. Royal Caribbean does offer drop-off kids that are six months to three years old. With this program — available on most ships — you can drop your child off to be watched for an hourly fee. The staff will entertain and watch your child, providing a ton of kid-friendly things to do.

In general, you should be prepared to spend a lot of time doing things with your baby in tow. Thankfully at this age, kids are still pretty easy to keep entertained. Our child was very social, so simply walking around the ship looking at all the new people kept him interested (and other passengers took an interest in him as well).

On sea days, we often just found an empty spot on the deck to let him crawl around, explore, and play with toys without bothering other passengers. Other times there are baby-friendly things to do that were put on by the cruise line. This includes events like character dress-ups and small parades for the little ones.

Many ships (especially newer ones) also have designated areas where kids still in diapers can splash in the water by the pool. That’s something we’d definitely suggest looking for in a ship as not all have this. Kids aren’t allowed in pools when wearing swim diapers.

As well, even if you can’t drop off your little ones in the kid areas, there are times when they allow parents to bring their kids to play — as long as the parents stay and supervised the child. 

While the vast majority of activities put on by the cruise line won’t be aimed specifically at children, they are usually still welcome to attend and can have a good time. Things like ice-sculpting and the “hairy chest” contest are for everyone, even if your baby isn’t quite sure what’s going on.

Fortunately, small infants don’t need a ton of entertainment to stay occupied. Often just the new sights and sounds around the ship are enough to keep them busy.

Ports of Call With Your Child

Visiting ports of call with a baby requires a lot more planning than you might be used to. For one, you have to be sure and pack everything you would need while out and about. It’s not easy just to run to the store if your forget something.

You also have to be very careful in planning excursions that your small child can handle. If you are traveling to the Caribbean, be prepared for the heat and humidity to zap them of energy extremely fast. As well, you’ll need to be considerate of naptimes and feeding times unless you actually like traveling with an irritated baby!

Given the headache of trying to plan around a baby’s schedule, the best thing to do is make it easy on yourself and your kid by doing something simple like heading to beaches near the cruise ship on port days. That way you don’t have to shell out a lot of money for an excursion while you might be tending to a sleeping baby or having to stop and feed. You also don’t have to go far and could make it back to the ship quickly if needed.

In particular, take advantage of the port areas that have everything you need — shops, restaurants, and often pools — right next to the ship.

One other smart thing to do? Time your exit off the ship to give you the most time possible without feeding or napping. While most people got off right when the ship docked, we liked to wait until after our kid’s first morning nap. Then we fed him before setting off. This gave more time to enjoy off the ship without having plan around naps and feeding time.

One other thing you should know is that ports of calls aren’t going to cater to families with young children. Taxis likely won’t have a place for a car seat; you’ll need to carry your baby on your lap. Don’t expect to find changing tables in every restroom. And some restaurants may not have high chairs. If you are worried about having facilities catering to your baby, your best bet is to stick around the more Americanized parts of town such as the area right near the cruise port.

Parent Time When Sailing With a Child

It’s safe to say we all love our kids, but that doesn’t mean we want to be around them 24/7, especially on vacation. So what about getting away from your child for a few hours?

Yes, it is possible, but it can vary wildly. As mentioned before, some lines like Royal Caribbean offer areas where kids can be dropped off to be supervised. The staff will entertain and watch your child, providing a ton of kid-friendly things to do. They also provide a phone you carry in case you need to be contacted. Just be aware that some smaller kids may not like being dropped off in an unfamiliar place (we speak from experiences)

Other lines limit their supervised time to only certain parts of the cruise or don’t offer it at all for smaller children. 

For instance, when we sailed Royal Caribbean, we dropped our kid off for only about 30 minutes before the staff called to let us know we needed to pick him up as they couldn’t get him calmed down.

And when we traveled aboard Carnival, we had our child with us the entire time. That meant we turned in early each night when our kid went to bed. We would often spend the evening sitting on the balcony with a couple of drinks or catching up with our shows on Netflix.

Yes, we would have rather gone to a quiet dinner, caught a show or hit the casino, but those are the sacrifices you have to make when you sail with an infant.

Bonus Tips on Sailing With Your Infant

Sailing with a baby is a completely different experience than cruising without a kid. While we’ve offered a ton of tips above, here are some other things we’ve learned after sailing multiple times with a baby:

The Heat and Humidity Drain Kids Even when it’s not that hot in the Caribbean, the combination of sun and humidity can zap a baby’s energy. Don’t be surprised if after only a short time outside your child is ready for another nap. Be sure to offer them plenty of shade to keep them from getting exhausted.

Kids Wear a Muster Legband Mom and Dad will have an assigned muster station printed on their room key. Babies will get a legband to wear for their trip with the muster station listed on it. This way, if you are separated, then the crew knows where you take your kid in an emergency.

Make Sure You Receive a Kid’s Life Jacket Every room will have life jackets in it, but you should receive a smaller kid’s life jacket upon arrival. If there’s not one in your cabin closet already, just ask your room steward to provide one.

Order Bottled Water to Your Room Most cruise lines are stingy on bringing bottled water onto the ship when you board, but do let you order it to your cabin. We suggest getting a couple of cases. This way you will always have water to make your baby’s formula instead of having to go to the ship’s restaurants to fill up. It’s also just nice to have for adults.

Rooms Have In-Cabin Refrigerators We’ve never seen a cabin that didn’t have a fridge, but have heard they do exist on some older ships. Having a refrigerator is good if your are still breast-feeding/pumping as it gives you a place to store milk after you pump.

One thing to note is that it’s more a cooler than a refrigerator. If you need to keep things colder, then get some ice from the cabin steward.

Bring an Outlet Adapter Between nightlights, sound machines, and portable fans, you might bring a lot of electronics when cruise with your baby. However, most cabins only have one or two plugs. For that reason, we suggest an outlet adapter that will give you multiple outlets for all your baby’s gear. They are cheap and convenient.

Bring a Lightweight, Small Stroller We have a large comfy jogging stroller at home, but opted to cruise with a much smaller, foldable stroller . We definitely recommend bringing one of these types of strollers. Ships can be narrow and with so many people on board, it’s difficult to navigate a large stroller. Plus, you can also just fold it up and put it in the cabin closet when not in use.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen (And Aloe!) Every parent knows to pack sunscreen. The sun is much stronger at lower latitudes, meaning your baby can get a sunburn in as little as five minutes. Use sunscreen religiously. And if do see a burn, be sure to have some soothing aloe on hand to help treat.

It will be tight, but we would think so. As well, you could also have the three year old sleep in the bed with you (gulp!).

Baby monitors aren’t likely to work well on the ship. The steel on the ship will really cut down on the strength of the signal.

What water did you use to make the bottles? Did you request bottled water or just use sink water?

You can buy bottled water. Sink water was fine with us.

Any suggestions on if your baby is picky about hot water for their bottle?

Great question. I would ask the room steward. You could also run hot water in the cabin sink to warm the bottle.

I have a 12 months old and two other older kids, do they allow me to stay and watch my older kids while they at the pool with my baby who will not be swimming

Of course! The baby can be in the pool area, just not in the pool itself until potty trained. Depending on the ship you go, there might be a kiddie pool that’s designed for kids who aren’t potty trained yet (swim diapers are still required).

Great tips! My questions- how did you wash the bottles on the cruise? Just bring some dish soap and a brush and wash in the stateroom sink?

2- did the dining room provide any sort of baby friendly food? I read somewhere else they requested (and got) some pureed foods from their wait staff! Did you have this experience too? Thanks!

Your idea for washing bottles is spot on. To be honest, we just brought a few and rinsed them out thoroughly after use. As for food, we brought a lot of our own but it the staff may accommodate (we didn’t ask). Our kiddo was eating solids and loved eating fruit, yogurt, etc. from the buffet.

Remember: It’s not just diapers, including “swim” diapers, that are forbidden in ship pools/hot tubs… including “family” pools/hot tubs. Children (including babies) who aren’t completely toilet-trained are not supposed to be there either!

Good question. We’d suggest talking to your doc about that. We didn’t have to do anything special before our trip and nothing was mentioned.

Why are you nervous about letting him crawl on floors? Germs?

Our guy was crawling then. We just let him crawl around. Where he got really dirty was crawling around on the outside decks (found a big empty spot behind Carnival’s funnel where not many people were). He loved it and we just used a wipe to clean him up after he was done. We don’t really worry about germs, etc. He goes to daycare so he is exposed to all sorts of stuff anyway.

I think cruising is more fun than flying. The baby will feel like he or she is doing his or her regular activities though things may be a little bit shaking. But, of course, you still need to prepare lots of baby’s needs, as you don’t want to end up in a mess when you forget to bring the baby’s formula.

Summer travel with kids on a cruise can be an excellent opportunity for a change of scenery during the long school break. But learning how to travel with kids is more art than science. Keeping a few strategies in mind can help make this experience hassle-free, even if your little ones aren't used to being on the go. Apart from choosing the itinerary with the best stops for your family and figuring out the perfect balance of land and sea days, there are many options when it comes to finding the perfect stateroom or suite. Paying attention to the details on your ship (including your stateroom) helps ensure a cruise with your kids is smooth sailing.

Choosing the best summer family vacations doesn't have to be hard: Looking at the best places for kids means choosing destinations that you know will excite them. A young kid who loves animals might enjoy itineraries with a wilderness component, like cruises to Alaska. If your family loves history, consider itineraries that sail to historic ports — like coastal cities in New England or Europe. When it comes to choosing the right family cruise, it's all about exploring the options and seeing how they align with your interests.

How To Travel With Kids

Traveling with kids is all about preparation. Plan to keep them entertained in ways that are convenient and stress-free for you.

One way to prepare is to have a backpack stocked with kids' essentials, from their favorite toys to any necessary medicines. You might even consider bringing along a journal so older kids can jot down highlights from the trip and capture the daily magic of traveling.

Before the trip, explain all the ship's amenities to get your family excited about the cruise. Explaining all the perks (including those in your stateroom) to kids before you set sail will help them prepare for the adventure.

Another good idea is to allow yourself more time to do everything than you think you need, from checking in to getting acquainted with your room. Rushing around rarely works with kids because it makes them frazzled; this applies to onshore excursions and onboard activities.

Why Choosing The Right Room Matters

Keeping larger families together on cruises is easy, thanks to connecting rooms. These adjacent staterooms allow families privacy with balcony dividers that can stay open and allow plenty of mingling. This option is also often more budget-friendly than booking a suite.

If you want a smaller, more economical option, some ships offer interior staterooms (a stateroom with no windows) that include a sofa, a convertible king bed that can transform into twin beds and a desk. This is an excellent choice for small families or a couple with one child who plan to spend minimal time in the room. Royal Caribbean's ships are remarkable hubs of activities and entertainment for all ages, so it's easy to spend your time out and about and just use your stateroom for sleeping.

For families with newborns, the ship provides cribs free of charge. Just inquire about the dimensions to make sure it'll fit comfortably into the stateroom you've chosen with plenty of room left to spare.

There's a space for just about every family member in Royal Suite Class, available on Oasis, Quantum and Quantum Ultra Class ships. These suites offer plenty of room for families of all sizes to unwind comfortably. The Ultimate Family Suite, for instance, features a private balcony jacuzzi, air hockey and even an in-suite slide.

Cool Places For Kids

Given the sheer variety of entertainment, there's no chance of boredom on any deck of a large cruise ship.

If you want more attention than you're used to getting with a traditional concierge, Royal Caribbean's Sky Class concierge — available with select suites — will attend to your every wish. Keeping The Family Entertained

When planning summer travel with kids, you may want to start with easy-to-access destinations. For very young kids, three-night cruises might be the perfect length of time. Then you can extend your adventures to much longer sailings in Europe and Asia as they grow older.

A four- or six-night cruise is a happy middle that will please just about everyone in the family, and many of these itineraries sail to affordable spots throughout the Caribbean. If you crave beach time, some adventures in Labadee, Haiti — a private isle known for its unspoiled beaches and turquoise waters as well as its artisanal market — might be just the ticket. If you're traveling with children who love the outdoors, head to the oldest city in the north of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata, and experience a thrilling cable car ride through the jungle before enjoying views from Mount Isabel de Torres. In Puerto Plata, you can also tour cacao farms — an attraction not often found on other Caribbean islands.

Cozumel will please history buffs and beach lovers alike. Unwind with a beachside massage at Playa Mia after taking a dip in crystal-clear waters. Head to Cozumel Reefs National Park for the best snorkeling around, where you can easily spot dolphins and manatees. History fans will love getting to know Mayan culture better at San Gervasio, the largest ancient site on the island — it dates back to 300 A.D. And nature lovers will love the lush mangroves and vibrant reefs in Punta Sur National Park.

Winding Down At Night

When the family is back onboard, recap the day's adventures while you're in your pajamas, eating s'mores that your concierge brought over to you to wrap up the day or snacking on late-night pizza and fries.

Though you'll have plenty of options for in-room gaming and movies, going through photos on your phone and talking about which memories meant the most to everyone is the perfect way to end the day on a sweet note and look forward to more adventures the next morning.

If you're traveling with a young adult or teenager who wants to spend some time getting to know other cruisers their age, they can hit the ship's teen-only spaces (some ships even feature at teen-only nightclub). These cool hangouts have video games, movie nights and other programmed events for preteens and teens.

And don't let them miss out on the Broadway-style shows onboard — these tend to be crowd-pleasers for all ages and they're all included in your cruise fare.

Tips For Cruising With A Baby

I know what you are thinking…going on a cruise with a baby is not a vacation. Well, you’re right; it’s not a “sit back and relax” kind of trip, but we had such a great time cruising with our 1-year-old and creating memories. I wouldn’t have it any other way.  It’s totally possible and really not all that stressful to take your little one on a cruise. Below I have some tips for cruising with a baby: from finding the best cruise line/ship, to what to pack and expect while onboard! 

  When booking a cruise with a baby, note that most lines will charge for babies as full-priced adults; however, some do offer “kids sail for free” or “3rd and 4th passenger” promotions often. 

We booked our cruise with Royal Caribbean with their kid’s free special, but other lines offer kids promos, including MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Holland America. 

Typically we prefer to sail on the newest ships to be able to experience more onboard; however, Royal Caribbean seems to offer their kids promo on older vessels. This year we sailed on the Grandeur of the Seas from Baltimore, which is probably the smallest ship we’ve ever been on, but we enjoyed our time! The boat first took sail in 1996 and has been renovated since. It’s actually leaving RC’s fleet in 2021 and being replaced by the Enchantment of the Seas for Baltimore sailings. 

Our ship departed out of Baltimore, Maryland with 2 stops to the Bahamas (Nassau and RC’s private island), Charleston, SC and Orlando, FL. I was looking for a cruise that had a little beach action and a little city action, so this was a perfect itinerary for us.

Accommodations  

Overall, I’m very impressed with how accommodating Royal Caribbean and the Grandeur staff were for babies. During our booking process, we were able to request a playpen directly from the cruise line. They even had playpen sheets! I brought our own sheets, but stupidly grabbed crib sheets instead of the playpen size and of course they didn’t fit. If possible, I would also recommend booking a balcony room, as these rooms are generally a bit larger. Having a balcony is perfect to escape to while the little one is napping.

In addition to the playpen, our ship had a ton of high chairs available in both the dining room and the buffet. These weren’t typical high chairs you see in restaurants but full-on high chairs with a tabletop, which was extremely convenient when feeding Elliott. 

Another impressive accommodation was beach strollers. One of our stops was to the new Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s new private island in the Bahamas. We were super impressed with the fact that they had beach strollers available free of charge! This stroller has giant sand wheels so that you can use it on the sand/beach. We were able to hang out on the beach and use this awesome stroller all day. Elliott napped for 2 hours! It perfectly covered the sun and allowed him to sleep in the shade. 

One area I was anxious about was food accommodations. Elliott has a cow’s milk allergy, so we have to avoid milk products (cheese, butter, etc.),  so I was a bit nervous feeding him on this trip. While the buffet didn’t list allergy information on the signs (they totally should), the dining room did and was very accommodating to his allergy. Every night we got to look at the next nights’ dinner menu and order a specific meal for Elliott. Our head waiter and team were amazing! They made custom, no salt, no dairy meals for him. They always made sure he had avocado for breakfast, steamed veggies for dinner and fruit for dessert. I hear they will also mash food upon request! We brought some baby food with us just in case, but used it mainly during snack time, or when we were away from the ship during port days.

Lastly, most cruise lines offer babysitting services on board. Our ship had a nursery and charged $6-$8 per hour (depending on the time of the day). They also offered free childcare for children over 3! We didn’t take advantage of the babysitting services this time, but it is an excellent option. What we did take advantage of was the open play area for babies (located in the nursery during certain hours). Especially on sea days, we would go up to the nursery and play. The room was lined with mats, and the staff would lay out new toys each day. We met a few parents and babies this way as well!

Getting Around

 Another piece I was a bit nervous about was how to get around on port days with a baby. I wanted to be able to explore each stop (without being stuck near the ship), and I wasn’t sure how to do this with all of the baby gear needed. After much research, I learned that it is easier to get around via public transportation. It is better to travel with a baby via a city bus (or subway) than any other means of transportation. You don’t have to bring a car seat, and public transportation is typically safer than taxis, cars, Ubers, etc. The best method of traveling with a baby on public transit is to wear them in a carrier or hold them. For the rest of our travels, we always used our BabyZen YOYO stroller. I love this stroller, as it is small and folds easily.  Perfect for a small cruise ship cabin!

For our first stop in Nassau, Bahamas, we decided to venture from the cruise port to Cable Beach. To do this, we took the city bus with the locals. We grabbed our Baby Bjorn but didn’t end up using it on the bus since it was sitting room only. I held Elliott on my lap for the 15-minute ride to the beach. Using the city bus was simple and easy!

During our last cruise stop in Charleston, SC, we did end up using Uber and taking our car seat. We were running late and were worried we didn’t have as much time to use the bus. Thankfully, our infant car seat clips into the stroller! If you are using a convertible car seat that doesn’t clip into a stroller, public transportation is a must if you need to travel further and don’t want to be stuck with your car seat.

 As a side note, since we are still using the infant car seat we decided to bring it along to make our overall travels easier. I mentioned this in my last traveling with baby post , but we ask the check-in counter at the airport if the plane is full. If not, they always let us take our car seat onboard free of charge! If it is, we typically do a gate check. So far, we have only flown with the nuna PIPA infant car seat , which clips into our travel stroller, the BabyZen YOYO . The YOYO also folds into a backpack size using this  travel bag . It  fits into the overhead compartment making it extremely easy to get on and off the plane. I love these both! Packing was probably my biggest challenge with this whole trip. I’m an over-packer at heart, so this trip was no different. My 1-year-olds suitcase was significantly bigger than my husband’s!

I wanted to share a few non-traditional items that I would recommen d on top of the general packing necessities:

Packing list

• We are in the sippy cup stage and like these!
• Tupperware – I grabbed 2 containers with lids so that we could pack snacks and leftovers easily. We used these daily.
• Placemats – Full disclosure, we didn’t end up needing these because the highchairs on our ship came with a tabletop, but not all cruise lines have this! The placemats are convenient for feeding your baby with a basic high chair.
• Bibs – We prefer to use a full-body bib. These keep Elliott’s outfits clean. Ikea also has nice ones for cheap!
• Dishwashing soap- I brought a small bottle of dishwashing liquid in this bottle .
• Sanitizing face and hand wipes
• Baby detergent – We actually didn’t pack this, but I wish we had. Our first day onboard, Elliott broke out in a rash. I’m not sure what caused it, but I was wondering if it was from the cruise detergent since he slept on their sheets. I wish we had brought a little bottle of baby laundry detergent to do any of his laundry as necessary.
• Sound machine – At home, Elliott sleeps with his Hatch Sound Machine , so we bought a portable one for traveling. This one is great because it’s small and easy to charge.
• Slumberpod – A blogger I follow and my girlfriend both raved about traveling with a Slumberpod, so I knew this was a must-have for our cruise. The Slumberpod is a blackout tent that goes over a playpen. It is 100% safe and was perfect for sharing a sleeping place. The Slumberpod kept Elliott in the dark, allowing him to sleep and nap better. It also had another unexpected feature as our balcony room was pretty drafty, the Slumberpod was perfect for sheltering Elliott from the cold breeze.
• Inflatable Bathtub – This is a must! Most cabins (unless you get a suite) have a tiny shower and no tub. We used our inflatable bathtub daily. Elliott loved it so much, we now use it at home as well.
• Portable highchair – This isn’t a must, but we did bring a high chair with us to use. We mainly used it in the cabin for snack time, but you could also take it to the beach. We’ve been using this at home as well!
• Travel stroller – I’ve raved about this stroller in my previous travel post, but this is the best stroller for traveling! As I mentioned above, the YOYO folds down into a backpack, so it’s easy to fly with and especially convenient for tiny staterooms aboard cruise ships.
• Baby Bjorn – Because of our BabyZen YOYO, we didn’t use the Baby Bjorn as much as I thought we would, but it was nice to have for the few times we did!
• Medicine – Pack medication for baby! I packed Tylenol, Zyrtec, gas relief drops, Saline Nose Spray, and a thermometer. Elliott got a fever our second to last day, so I was glad we had our Tylenol (although the ship had some as well).

 My last tip when cruising with baby (or frankly when flying as well)– don’t pack more than a day’s worth of diapers with you. Just buy them before you board the ship (or arrive). We stopped at Walgreens before heading to the port and grabbed a large pack of diapers and a pack of water for the ship (make sure to print an extra luggage tag, so you can check it). This way, you don’t have to take up your entire luggage with diapers.

Thank you! The Slumberpod is totally a travel must! We bought the protective headphones, just to block out noise, but never ended up using them. He doesn’t seem bothered at all. For regular headphones, we haven’t used them yet, but I’ve heard good things about Snug Play + Kids from Amazon and LilGadgets! Good luck in FL!

Thanks so much! If i remember correctly we didn’t have to move the sofa since it was against the wall, but we did remove the playpen during the day to use the balcony on the days we could. We ported out of Baltimore in winter, so we didn’t use it the first few days of the cruise anyway. Either way, just pop off the slumber pod and place it on the sofa. No issues. 🙂

Top 5 Tips for Baby’s First Caribbean Travel Experience

For many years, traveling has been my favorite way to fill my days. Limin’ on some coastline with a rum in my hand, listening to a soundtrack of West Indian music while allowing the sun to dip into the sea. Or tramping through the bush , marveling at the sounds and displays of Caribbean birds while collecting ripe, fallen mangoes on my way to some exotic location. Or countless other adventures varying widely from safe to undeniably ill-advised. This was what I liked to do more than anything.

Then, along came this guy:

The prevailing wisdom said, my life would have to change… And it did. There are now several brightly colored “activity gyms” in my living room. I had to gut my home office converting it into a baby room—replacing my desk with a crib and assorted other baby-centric materials. My uninterrupted nights of sleep have become a fond, but distant memory and the woman with whom I spent so many nights out on the town has a new, demanding guy in her life.

But have you looked at that face above? How could you not want to shower that boy with love?

When it came to the all important subject of traveling, however, I took a slightly unconventional approach. Rather than giving it up, or at least reigning it in, I’m going to give something else a try:

Travel more!

My hope: If I venture out even more, with this new addition in tow, he’ll become more than just mildly comfortable with air, land and sea travel, but actually become a lover of international adventure as much as his “old man.”

As we began planning our three-month-old’s first Caribbean travel experience, there were five tips at the top of my list:

• Spend as little time in-transit as possible . This was also on my list of tips for a babymoon and it goes double for baby’s first trip. Not only are you doing it for your child, who will find everything new and potentially irritating, but for yourselves too. Try to minimize the stress of maneuvering a baby through airport security, long bouts trying to sit still on an airplane, etc.
• Go somewhere familiar. This is a funny tip coming from me, because normally I would advise the exact opposite for uncommon travelers. The world is so full of new things to explore, going back to a recently visited locale just doesn’t make much sense to me. But in this case, it’s the right thing to do. The last thing you want is to get lost with a fussy baby. And besides, just because you’re familiar with a place, doesn’t mean you can’t try to discover new things about it!
• Bring everything you think you may need and a little more. I like to travel very, very light. So much so that on short trips my bags are often half empty. Now with a baby, this translates into more room for the kid’s tiny needs—a couple more diapers, a couple more wipes, a few more outfits, baby sunscreen, any of your child’s medicinal needs, etc. But don’t go overboard and pack excessively. You can always buy diapers and more at your destination if necessary.
• Consider making the first trip a shorter one. We did this because we were worried our little boy might have some trouble with the trip, hotel, climate change, or other unimagined change to his surroundings. It turned out he didn’t, but I still feel it’s worth noting, because if he had, we would have all been miserable for an extended period.
• Ask, ask ask. When you’re checking into your flight, ask if it’s full. If it isn’t, ask to have an empty seat next to you for your baby. We also called ahead to the delightful L’Esplanade Hotel to ask about a crib. (We’re very thankful that our three month old likes to sleep in his crib and we weren’t about to give that up.) Additionally, you can call ahead to airlines and ask to secure other baby needs, but we didn’t do this.

So, to cover tips one and two, we chose St. Martin as our destination. Not only had we just been there six months ago for our babymoon , but it’s a simple, direct flight out of the excellent Terminal 5 at JFK aboard JetBlue . In terms of the actual flight, here are a few more tips:

• First impressions go a long way. Introduce your cute child to the whole plane by going for a little walk up and down the aisle while he’s happy and smiling. He’ll catch the eye of passengers who’ll form a positive opinion of your sweet baby. This way, should his demeanor hit a little turbulence, your fellow passengers will likely think “awww, poor adorable baby needs a little lovin'” as opposed to “damn, that obnoxious kid is loud.”
• Feed for takeoff and landing. Many articles online mention that one of the main discomforts infants face on a flight is the cabin pressure changes that occur during takeoff and landing. Feeding during those periods allows your child to adjust more peacefully. Plus, a positive side effect of the tight seating configuration in today’s planes means even the shyest nursing mothers can feed their children with some sense of privacy.

If you follow these tips, you should end up with a happy baby both here:

A new arrival doesn’t have to be the end of your life as an avid traveler. So far, with our three-month-old, it just took following a few simple tips to make the whole experience not just doable, but actually a lot of fun.

Portable fan:  A small battery- or USB-powered fan is a useful accessory when traveling with little ones – you can attach it to the travel stroller and car seat on hot days and secure it to the travel crib on warm nights.
