The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources. It sustains more than 150,000 fisher folk living in 132 villages on the shore and Islands. In 1981, Chilika Lake was designated the first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

The lake also acts as one of the most supportive ecosystems in the name of Chilika Lake Sanctuary. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub continent. Those coming in from Bhubaneswar have the option of boarding the Berhampur -Vishakhapatnam-Chennai train directly to Balugaon.

The different entry points to Chilika Lake can be accessed via different routes. Tourists planning a road trip to Chilika Lake from Bhubaneswar or Cuttack are first required to reach Balugaon, which is around 2 hours away through National Highway 5; there are numerous options with buses from either city. From here, a taxi or auto rickshaw can be hired to reach Rambha or Barkul. Visitors can also catch a bus from Puri to reach Satapada; from Bhubaneswar, Satapada can be accessed only through taxis.

Travelers coming in from Kolkata and Chennai via road are also required to get on to National Highway 5 to reach Balugaon.

Chilika lake - asia's largest brackish water lagoon.

The vast and dream like Chilika Lagoon is situated on the east-coast of India. It is the largest brackish Water Lagoon with estuarine character that sprawls along the east coast. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian sub-continent. It is one of the hotspot of biodiversity in the country, and some rare, vulnerable and endangered species listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened Animals inhabit in the lagoon for atleast part of their life cycle.

Chilika is an integral part of the culture of coastal Odisha. Almost 400 years ago, the saint poet Purshottam Das, a devotee of Lord Jagannath, wrote a poem about Lord Krishna dancing with a milkmaid called Maniki, who had come to sell curds on the banks of the Chilika.

Chilika supports some of the largest congregation of migratory birds in the country, particularly during the winter. Flocks of migratory waterfowl arrive from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea, remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and South East Asia, Ladakh and the Himalayas, to feed and breed in its fertile waters. In 1989-90 an estimated two million birds visited the Lake.

Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary

Today we visit Lingaraj Tepmle – a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and is one of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar, Dhauli Shanti Stupa and Udaygiri & Khandagiri Caves – nestled between the foothills of two mountains ranges of the Eastern Ghats, the biggest and most picturesque site of the triad. Later we visit Nandankanan Zoo.

Bhubaneswar – Puri (3 Nights)

Today we proceed to Puri. Enroute we visit Pipli – a town of artisans where locals produce applique art and colourful fabrics. Later we stroll on the sun-kissed beach of Puri and view the breath taking sunset.

Today we enjoy an excursion to Chilika Lake – one of the most important wetlands in the world because it is home to a phenomenal variety of birds. We visit Sea Mouth – the Island where Chilka lake meets the Bay of Bengal. In the evening, we enjoy Odia Folk Dance Show.

Today we visit Jagannath Temple – one of the major pilgrimage centres in India followed by a visit to Chandrabhaga Beach. Later we visit Konark Sun temple – an architectural marvel which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and Arka Khetra Sun Temple Interpretation centre. In the evening we witness the sound and light show (Subject to Operation) at Konark Sun Temple.

Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev Not To Contest Odisha Elections; Know Why

Bhubaneswar: Chilika MLA Prashant Jagdev, the expelled BJD leader who joined BJP in February, will not be contesting the upcoming elections in Odisha.

Speaking to media on Friday, Jagdev said he was keen for a contest with BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik from Hinjli Assembly seat. “Since the saffron party did  nominate me from the seat, I have decided not to contest the upcoming elections,” he said.

He said that Naveen had deviated from Biju Patnaik’s ideology. “While Biju Babu spoke about development of Odia, Naveen is running the government with non-Odia officers, who are looting the state. People are fed up with the Naveen-led government. The wave of change is clearly visible and the BJP will form a double engine government in Odisha after the elections,” he added.

This came a day after he was booked for allegedly misbehaving with a working journalist during a Jansampark Padyatra of BJP MP candidate Aparajita Sarangi organised at Chhanagiri under Jankia police limits in Khurda district.

The Chilika MLA was earlier expelled from BJD in 2021 for allegedly assaulting a Dalit leader of BJP.

The BJP has fielded Sisir Mishra, a fresh face, from the constituency, where Naveen is seeking re-election for the sixth time in a row. He is the younger brother of late Sarat Mishra, who was a noted BJP leader and worked towards creating a support base for the saffron party in Ganjam. Sisir had also worked as coordinator for BJP candidate and lawyer Pitambar Acharya in Hinjili in 2019.
