Self-driving the new way to holiday

Getting behind the wheel surged as a preferred travel option during the covid-19 outbreak.

china tourism automobile and cruise association

Economic benefits

The prosperous self-driving market is not only a result of tightened travel policies during the COVID-19 outbreak, but an inevitable result of the country's developing economy and people's desire for a better life.

Guanyan Tianxia, a consulting company headquartered in Beijing, released an industry report in October saying that the self-driving market is estimated to reach 125.3 billion yuan this year, a year-on-year rise of 10.4 percent.

Rising car ownership and the number of drivers, in addition to people's growing preference for self-driving trips, are vital to the development of the market.

Figures from the Ministry of Public Security said 360 million vehicles were registered nationwide through June 2020, with automobiles comprising 270 million of that number. In 2019, the number of registered automobiles was 260 million.

The growing automobile market includes products centered around self-driving. Their development has also brought tremendous benefits to the nation's economy.

Dai Huihui, the academy's associate researcher, said the growing self-driving sector has boosted industries including car rentals, motels, car maintenance and insurance, as well as the construction of camping sites.

Xie Yingmin, chairman of Shandong's Self-driving Tourism Association, said that once people go for a self-driving tour, they will have many more after experiencing the sense of and happiness the trips bring.

"Driving cars for travel can also boost custom for tourist attractions, gas stations and the insurance industry," he said.

Xie took Shandong province as an example. During the eight-day National Day holiday break last year, self-driving travelers went for three-day tours and spent about 5,000 yuan on average.

Figures from the province's transportation bureau show that about 21 million cars passed through the province's expressways over the break, 30 percent of which were manned by self-driving travelers.

"We multiplied the number of self-driving cars by three days, the average length they spent on trips, and concluded that self-driving tours brought in over 30 billion yuan to the province," he said.

Official support

Allowing for the tremendous potential of the self-driving sector, the government has released notices that offer guidance to industry insiders operating in the sector.

In 2019, the General Office of the State Council launched a notice to boost consumption concerning culture and tourism. In the notice, the council encouraged administrative units and companies to improve their self-driving services while developing products that are more appealing to travelers.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism also released standards to classify self-driving destinations and camping sites for recreational cars in September 2019. The standards require higher quality of self-driving planning, public services and emergency responses, and are of great significance to the improvement of the nation's self-driving industry.

Preferential policies are also available to self-driving travelers. For example, the Ningxia Hui autonomous region in northwestern China has offered over 20,000 coupons nationwide to self-drivers, who can enjoy discounts on tickets to A-rated attractions for an unlimited number of uses in one year.

Travelers can also receive discounts on services including accommodations, laundry and car parking in the region by using the coupons.

"With COVID-19 vaccination in process and tourism in recovery, Chinese people will show an ever-stronger desire for traveling to 'find their trips back' this year," said Dai Huihui, the researcher.

"Travelers will stress ways to enjoy higher-quality traveling, thus making self-driving more popular in coming years. The government and travel agencies alike are making efforts to promote quality development of the self-driving industry by organizing industrial associations and planning more attractive routes and products."

Lu Lu, vice-chairman of the China Tourism Automobile and Cruise Association, said at a conference held in Jiangsu province in August that the domestic self-driving sector has a promising future even after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lu said the sector can grow to be a main driver for tourism development while still continuously meeting people's increasing needs for quality services.

China Recreation Vehicles

U.S.-made RVs enjoy a good reputation for high performance and comfort. Despite challenges in 2020 that resulted in a steep decline in U.S. exports of these vehicles, a decrease in U.S.-China trade tensions, the projected strong growth in Chinese consumer demand for leisure-related goods (including RVs), and the reputation of U.S. RVs could help them stage a comeback in the Chinese market. Opportunities for U.S. businesses may arise as Chinese consumers continue to purchase vehicles for recreation.

According to the China Tourism, Automobile, and Cruise Association, China had 1,400 campgrounds at the end of 2019 (latest year available). Registered recreational vehicles totaled 148,784 units at the end of 2019, an increase of 48.1% over 2018. This upward trend is expected to continue through 2021 and beyond. A 2020 study by Goldstein Research projected that sales could reach 400,000 units by 2030 if no further market access barriers arise.

Over 64% of Chinese tourists traveled domestically in 2019, and over 80% traveled domestically in 2020. Other business opportunities include campgrounds and ski resorts that purchase travel trailers as temporary lodging quarters rather than for road use.

Camper and RV roadtrips gaining popularity in China

Roughly 61 percent of 3.6 billion trips made by Chinese tourists last year have been self-drive trips as more Chinese are touring with RVs.

More Chinese are taking recreational vehicles to tourist spots both inside and outside the country, and industry insiders say the trend will only grow.

Yang Bei took her family touring half the world last June in a recreational vehicle.

They spent 136 days traveling from Beijing across Mongolia, Russia, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain to Portugal and then doubled back.

"Traveling in a camper allowed us to fully take in views and experience different folk customs along the way," Yang says.

Throughout the trip, Yang's family cooked and bathed inside their camper.

"During the trip, the vehicle felt like home to us and saved us money that we could use to buy a new car," she says.

As an alternative to traditional touring, traveling in recreational vehicles has gained ground among Chinese.

"We've seen great momentum in the development of China's recreational vehicle industry, although it has just started," says Ye Shengji, deputy secretary-general of China Association of Automotive Manufacturers, an industry body.

To date, China has around 15,000 recreational vehicles and the figure will likely reach 500,000 in the next five years, Ye says.

Roughly 61 percent of 3.6 billion trips made by Chinese tourists last year have been self-drive trips, says Liu Hanqi, secretary-general of the China Tourism Automobile and Cruise Association.

"An increasing number of self-drive travelers have chosen recreational vehicles," he adds.

Recreational vehicle clubs have been established in many parts of China and travel agencies have also developed routes for this model, Liu explains.

"The industry will surely have a bright future, and we need to cultivate this new leisure and camping culture," Liu says.

The State Council, China's cabinet, has affirmed its support to recreational vehicle and camping development in the country, and a total of 18.5 billion yuan ($3 billion) has already been invested in the sector. The number of campsites is expected to see a nationwide expansion in the next couple of years, he says.

The national standards on caravan camping site construction were unveiled at the All in Caravaning 2015, an expo that brought together caravan and component manufacturers and service providers worldwide in Beijing from June 26-28.

"Those standards will play a leading role in improving recreational vehicle travel development and quality," Liu says.

At the moment, there are more than 200 such campsites in operation nationwide. Approximately 500 of which are either under construction or already planned.

Beijing has 23 camping facilities up and running, 21 under construction and 78 planned, says Li Yan, an official with the Beijing Tourism Industry Association's auto-camping branch.

The expo showed the rapid development of the camping industry in China.

"There were only fewer than 50 exhibitors in the first session of the expo (in 2012)," says Tian Qun, general manager of China CTS Asset Management Corp, one of the expo's organizers, along with the German company Messe Dusseldorf's Shanghai office and the Recreational Vehicle Industry Committee under the China Association of Automotive Manufacturers.

This year's event attracted more than 300 exhibitors, including global caravan leaders like Adria, Dethleffs, Forest River and Knaus Tabbert as well as well-known international caravan parts providers, such as Truma, Dometic, Camec and Outdoor Revolution.

Tian points out that when they conducted surveys at auto shows seven years ago, only six out of 100 visitors had heard of caravan travel or had related experiences

"But the people who came to the expo asked us very professional questions," she says.

The large population base and vast natural landscape resources make China an ideal place for travel by recreational vehicles and that potential is drawing many global caravan players here.

"I believe China's caravan market is promising," says Marco De Bonis, Adria Mobil's director of operations in China. "In my opinion, China will be a world's (caravan) leader in five years."

The company spent two years doing market research in China, and the research has turned out some interesting results.

Compared with European travelers, Chinese prefer more compact and shorter caravans.

With a C1 driving license, Chinese feel more comfortable driving vehicles that are shorter than 6 meters long, while Europeans are accustomed to driving vehicles more than 10 meters long, Bonis explains.

"This (smaller space) means we not only have to downsize our products but also refigure the inner layout to cater to Chinese customers' habits," he says.

The research found that Chinese care more about living room space, not so much the bedroom.

"They want to spend more time doing things like playing mahjong in the living room," Bonis says.

However, campsites are underdeveloped in China, compared with Europe. A campsite shouldn't be just a piece of land but should have water and electricity supplies, and sewage system for caravans, as well as green space, Bonis says.

Italy is about as big as a Chinese province, but it has roughly 3,000 campsites, as opposed to 300 in China. "So, there's huge potential for development," he says.

Cruise operators ready to sail for rebound as COVID tide turns

Amid relaxed COVID-19 prevention rules in China, cruise operators are ready to set sail in the new year with localized strategies, eyeing a rebound in the domestic tourism market.

The itineraries of cruise tours were mainly outbound tours before the COVID-19 pandemic even as the domestic luxury cruise market has shown great potential, tourism analysts said.

China Merchants Viking Cruises has announced its routes and strategies for 2023 to lure Chinese tourists.

It is not just the magnificent scenery along China's coastlines that have inspired the cruise routes' design but also numerous national cultural gems, the luxury cruise ship operator said.

One of the routes lasting eight days starts from either Shanghai or Shenzhen and the other two legs are Xiamen and Zhoushan.

It will take passengers to savor the glamour of China's intangible cultural heritages and Buddhist art, and appreciate the charming coastal scenery.

In Xiamen, Fujian Province, tourists will be able to explore the integration of traditional stone sculpture techniques and painting art, and experience "embroidery on stones." An architecture trip revealing stories behind houses on the island of Gulangyu, a mecca of piano virtuosity, a vegetarian feast featuring 24 Solar Term elements, a cultural trip about tulou (earthen houses), and a journey into Anxi Tieguanyin Tea Garden are also among the offerings.

Zhoushan, in the northeast of Zhejiang Province, is known as the "city of a thousand islands," and is also China's only city based on islands.

In Zhoushan, a fishing trip with local fishermen and a Zen retreat on Putuo Mountain will be arranged to enrich travelers' experiences.

An onshore trip in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, is also on offer.

Another route strings the popular resort city of Sanya, Hailing Island in Yangjiang City, and Shenzhen, and passengers will explore the secrets of Nanhai No. 1 cargo ship, a sunken ship from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) at the Maritime Silk Road Museum, learn the old technique of kite making, get close to the culture of the Li ethnic minority, and enjoy a helicopter trip in Sanya.

The ship has installed ventilation and purification facilities in rooms and public areas and deploys ultraviolet robots for disinfection.

Tourists will be able to appreciate stone sculptures on the cruise tour.

As of November, 375 cruise ships of 85 brands globally had resumed operation, accounting for 86 percent of the total, a report on the cruise ship industry's development by the China Tourism Automobile and Cruise Association and the Shanghai International Cruise Business Institute revealed recently.

It is estimated that the global cruise industry will welcome a full recovery no later than 2023, according to the report.

The number of cruise tourists is estimated to grow 12 percent by 2026 from 2019 globally, it added.

The number of cruise ship construction orders have been scheduled until 2027, reflecting the confidence of cruise operators and the brilliant future of the global cruise industry's development, the report noted.

Foreign Automakers Eager for Chinese Partners at Beijing Auto Show

Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - Global automakers including Volkswagen and Toyota came to this year's Beijing auto show looking to catch up to surging China EV makers that are dominating the world's largest auto market.

The show that started this week showcased a marked shift in attitude among some foreign automakers, industry executives said. After being impressed by the bold leaps made by BYD and other Chinese automakers at last year's event in Shanghai, foreign automakers are now avidly searching for Chinese partners and announcing new tie-ups, the executives said.

Among the most active were European and Japanese automakers, with announcements coming from Toyota Motor that it would team up with Chinese gaming and social media giant Tencent on artificial intelligence and big data, and Volkswagen promoting its partnership with Chinese EV startup XPeng.

An executive from Renault said on Friday it had "pivotal conversations" with Chinese EV maker Li Auto and Xiaomi, the smartphone maker that just introduced its first car, to explore EV and smart-vehicle technologies. Nissan, meanwhile, announced a tie-up with Chinese tech firm Baidu to carry out research on AI and "smart cars."

Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida visited several booths including that of Chinese tech giant Huawei, which is becoming a major auto supplier.

European automakers sent "much more senior management" to visit the booth of LIDAR remote sensing technology supplier Hesai Technology this year versus last year, said Bob in den Bosch, senior vice president of global sales at the Shanghai-headquartered firm.

"They're looking for a partner to close the gap," he said. "They came here with a plan and a mission."

Foreign brands have dominated China's auto business since the 1990s and have brought extensive know-how to the Asian country. But last year, foreign brands' collective share of China's passenger car market fell to 48%, down sharply from 57% just two years earlier, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

GOING LOCAL

German automakers including Volkswagen and Mercedes, in particular, emphasized their efforts to localize production and invest more in local partnerships, with Volkswagen saying repeatedly its goal was to remain the best-selling foreign automaker in China into 2030.

Hildegard Mueller, president of Germany's powerful car lobby VDA, told Reuters that the German automakers are, in addition, exploring new marketing strategies to attract Chinese consumers. This includes partnering with the country’s army of car influencers, who promote and discuss new vehicle models and trends with their large followings on social media.

"It’s huge (online) traffic and huge potential,” she said.

The market share in China of Toyota, the world's top-selling automaker, declined last year, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Toyota's China joint ventures with GAC and FAW held a combined 7.9% of the Chinese auto market last year, compared with an 8.6% share in 2022, the CPCA said. Toyota has said it will include technology from Tencent in a China-made passenger vehicle the Japanese automaker will put on sale this year as part of a new tie-up.

On Thursday, Toyota took care to emphasize the new tie-up, with its chief technology officer, Hiroki Nakajima, inviting a senior Tencent executive onstage to its auto show presentation.

"We want to, with Toyota, build products and services that are closer to consumers, to jointly build mobility solutions of the future and we look forward to the fruits of our cooperation," said Dowson Tong, CEO of Tencent Cloud and Smart Industries Group.

Some foreign auto executives were more pessimistic about their ability to fight back.

Katsuhide Moriyama, president of GAC Honda Automobile, Honda's joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group, cited how China's leading EV makers have found ways to slash vehicle development time.

"Manufacturers should shorten the lead time to compete with those competitors," Moriyama said outside the automaker's booth at the show. "But a two-year model cycle is too short for us."

The number of American car executives paled compared with visitors from other foreign markets, noted Hesai's In den Bosch.

The market share in China of major American brands including Ford and General Motors has plummeted amid declining gasoline-car sales and the shift from foreign to Chinese brands.

Ford's chief financial officer, John Lawler, told reporters in the United States on Wednesday that the automaker wants to maintain its existing China presence but is not planning to invest more.

"We're not putting capital into China," he said.
