2. Kailash And Kutumsar Caves

cave

Two of the places we left out from the list of destinations within the Kanger Valley National Park are the Kailash and Kutumsar Caves. The caves are easily accessible by a very pleasant walk through the dense forest of Kanger Valley National Park and are among the best tourist places near Chitrakoot Falls.

First, let’s talk about the recently discovered (1993) Kailash Caves. The cave system is a small one, only 250 meters in length but nonetheless, offers some spectacular views of stalactite and stalagmite formations. The reason behind naming the caves Kailash Caves is that at the end of the cave, the stalagmite formations resemble a Shivling. Another interesting thing about the Kailash caves is the acoustic properties of its walls that emit sound when struck by hands.

Kutumsar Caves are the mysterious counterpart of Kailash Caves. Ironically, the cave is also India’s most biologically explored cave. At 1370 meters in length, the caves lie 35 meters below the ground level. As a result of this, there are a number of areas within the cave that have never had access to any sunlight. There are also dark pools and cold corners, and even a few areas where there is a lack of oxygen. The cave system has five separate chambers that feature some excellent, naturally occuring, acoustics.

Additional Info: The caves are closed to the public between June 15th and October 31st, due to the monsoon rains. Thanks to the rain, a lot of debris get collected within the caves, which needs removal before they can be opened for tourists again.

3. Tirathgarh Waterfalls

waterfall

At a distance of about 35 kilometers from the city center of Jagdalpur, this waterfall is considerably close to Kutumsar Cave. The waterfall features a single drop of a staggering 91 meters (299 feet) and is truly a spectacle for nature lovers. The waterfall area is surrounded by lush green forest and is a favorite picnic spot among the locals and thus, is one of the famous tourist places near Chitrakoot Falls.

For those looking for a bit of extra adventure, there is an option of going to the bottom of the gorge formed by the waterfall. The bottom can be reached by climbing down a flight of 210 stairs. This staircase is well maintained and is very easy to navigate for people of all age groups and fitness levels. This is indeed among the top places to visit near Chitrakoot Waterfall.

Additional Info: The restaurants and shops near the Tirathgarh Waterfall area have a very bad rep of serving bad, if not stale food and expired products. To save yourself from an experience that can potentially ruin your whole trip, we recommend carrying your own food and water when you visit Tirathgarh Waterfalls.

Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh Is A Hidden Gem That You Must Dig Up

4. Zonal Anthropological Museum

museum

Like most other museums, the Zonal Anthropological Museum lets visitors take a sneak peak into a different era. However, unlike most museums, this one focuses on the past of the homogenous Bastar Tribe.

Established in 1972, the museum features an impressive collection of artifacts, art, weapons, utensils, ornaments, clothes collected from the tribe during the 70s and 80s. The museum has efficiently places these artifacts in a manner that describes a narrative of the “adivasi” lives of the Bastar Tribe, before the onslaught of infrastructure revolution in the area. History buff or not, a peek into the lives of a tribe much different than what any city-dweller has imagined, from a time when most visitors were not even born, is sure to pique anyones’ interest.

Additional Info: The museum lies within the premises of office of Anthropological Survey Of India and is a mere 4 kilometer drive from the city center. The museum is open for visitors from 10: AM to 5:30 PM. During this time, the museum is closed for half an hour between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM. There is no entry fee for visitors.

US 50 bridge closed west of Gunnison due to safety concerns

Travel advisory.

US 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir near Dillon Pinnacles that is now closed

Gunnison and Montrose Counties  — A safety closure is in place for a bridge on US Highway 50 located west of Gunnison. The Colorado Department of Transportation is closing the bridge at the urging of the Federal Highway Administration and state bridge engineering experts due to the findings of an ongoing safety inspection, which identified anomalies in the bridge on Thursday, April 18. The closure is in place between US 50 Mile Point 131 (intersection with Colorado Highway 92) and MP 138. Local traffic will be allowed through the closure point to reach residences. Motorists should use COtrip to plan an alternate route. See below for more information about the northern and southern recommended alternate routes. CDOT has set up an incident command and will coordinate with local, state and federal agencies in order to respond as quickly and effectively as possible. CDOT has been conducting a special inspection for high-strength steel bridges for the Blue Mesa bridges as required by the Federal Highway Administration. This inspection was required because of known issues with similarly constructed bridges elsewhere in the country. A defect was observed during an early investigation of the bridge at approximately Mile Point 136.3. CDOT immediately brought in a second inspection crew with resources to perform another method for testing whether the defect posed a safety hazard on the bridge. The second inspection took place on Thursday, April 18.  CDOT is continuing to assess the safety of the bridge and to quickly determine options for interim and permanent fixes – and will keep the public informed as soon as more information is available. The bridge closure is located between Gunnison and Montrose. It is located east of the US 50 Little Blue Creek Canyon project, which is currently in a planned winter shutdown.

Recommended Alternate Routes

This closure will create a significant detour for commuters between Montrose and Gunnison. The recommended detour route for through traffic is via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south. CDOT understands the inconvenience that this creates and is rapidly evaluating options to improve options for residents, businesses, and travelers on the western slope. The northern route is 354 miles and requires approximately six hours of travel time. The southern route is 331 miles and requires nearly 7 hours of travel time. CDOT and local partners are exploring whether it is feasible at this point in the season to clear local seasonal routes that may be able to significantly reduce the detour time for local travelers.

Know Before You Go

Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road. CDOT resources include:

  • Road conditions and travel information: COtrip.org
  • Download the COtrip Planner app: bit.ly/COtripapp
  • Sign up for project or travel alerts: bit.ly/COnewsalerts
  • See scheduled construction lane closures: bit.ly/laneclosures
  • Connect with @ColoradoDOT on social media: Twitter , Facebook , Instagram and YouTube

Remember: Slow For The Cone Zone

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!

Man dies after setting himself on fire outside courthouse where Trump trial is being held

Warning: This article contains an image some may find disturbing.

A man who set himself on fire Friday outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump's hush money trial is taking place has died, New York City police said early Saturday.

The man, whom police identified as Maxwell Azzarello of St. Augustine, Florida, was in the designated protest area outside.

No time of death was given by police. He was declared deceased by staff at the hospital where he had been taken, the NYPD said.

NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey B. Maddrey told reporters that Azzarello walked into the center of the park, shuffled around his clothes, opened a backpack and took out and threw numerous pamphlets on the ground. He then pulled out a canister, poured a liquid accelerant on himself, lit himself on fire, fell on a police barrier and then fell to the ground.

Police said the man entered Collect Pond Park, across the street from the courthouse, at around 1:30 p.m. before setting himself on fire. Bystanders, court officers and police used coats and fire extinguishers to try to put out the fire and help him, Maddrey said.

It appeared to happen around the time that the jury for Trump's trial was fully empaneled — with 12 jurors and six alternates selected to sit for a trial that's expected to last about six weeks. It occurred just before the court took a lunch break.

New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh told reporters that Azzarello was taken to the burn unit at Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he had been described as alive but in critical condition.

Four police officers and one court officer sustained minor injuries from dealing with the fire, Kavanagh said.

Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Azzarello was born in 1987 and arrived in New York City earlier in the week. He said that family members police were in contact with after the incident were unaware that Azzarello was in New York. Kenny said Azzarello's pamphlets seemed to be "propaganda-based" about Ponzi schemes and conspiracy theories.

Police said they don't believe Azzarello was targeting any particular person or group.

Law enforcement deployed a bomb squad search team just in case, Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry said, and no devices were found in the area.

A person lit themselves on fire near Manhattan Criminal Court on April 19, 2024 in New York.

Three law enforcement sources told NBC News earlier that the man appears to have been a follower of some conspiracy theories and may have had emotional issues. He may have posted his intention to set himself on fire in advance, the sources said.

Moments after setting himself on fire, the man was lying on the ground, burning. At times, he appeared to seize. Police tried to use a small fire extinguisher to put the fire out, but were unsuccessful. While still on fire, the man tried to sit up. Police then used a large extinguisher to put out the fire.

A 73-year-old man from the Upper West Side, Dave, watched it happen. Dave said the person threw up a bundle of pamphlets, picked them up and threw them again.

“I heard this clattering,” he said. “That caught our attention. Then he pulled out a can.”

David said he saw the man begin to douse himself in something before taking out a lighter.

“There I thought, this could be awful,” he said. “I’m old enough to remember the Vietnam War.”

He said the person then set himself alight and was quickly engulfed in flames. The person didn’t make a sound as people around him looked on, horrified.

Ed Quinn, a freelance photojournalist who lives in the East Village, said he was facing the court when: “I heard someone scream, ‘He’s going to light himself on fire.’”

“I see him dumping gasoline on his face, very deliberately,” he said. “He had [a] gray t-shirt on. It soaked his face. It soaked his shirt. Boom, he went up.”

Quinn said it took the police about a minute to arrive.

“Women were begging, screaming, put it out, put him out,” he said.
